HYSTERICA – This past March, the second studio album, The Art Of Metal, from Stockholm, Sweden’s HYSTERICA was released via Black Lodge. Get a Metal taste for what HYSTERICA sounds like below. Hopefully you’ll be impressed and will seek their new album out. I know I dig what I hear from this all-female Metal Band, hell and yeah. Metal be thy name.

As stated on the Black Lodge Records website:

Hysterica has toured Sweden, Europe and Russia playing both clubs and big festivals like Sweden Rock Festival and Hardrock Hell (UK). Hysterica has developed on all horizons since the release of the debut album and with Black Lodge – Sweden’s biggest Metal label – everything is there to make them as big as, for example, Sabaton and Bullet. “The Art Of Metal” is a real killer and is guaranteed to receive a lot of attention worldwide!

ENCHANTYA – Signs To Massacre Records

Posted in Heavy Metal, heavy metal news, melodic metal, metal music, Music, rock music, rock music news, symphonic metal with tags , , , , , , on March 21, 2012 by Metal Odyssey

ENCHANTYA were formed back in 2004, when Rute Fevereiro decided to pause her musical career with Black Widows.

In the Summer of 2005 they recorded their first demo “Moonlighting The Dreamer” and despite line-up changes, the band kept going until the present days, leaving a nice trail of good reviews, earth-shattering concerts and a few TV appearances.

Immediately, the sound of ENCHANTYA was labeled and put in line with bands like Nightwish, Within Temptation and others.

In 2007, ENCHANTYA won the first place of the first edition of the “Bandas Procuram-se” competition in Portugal.

Watch out for the “Dark Rising”, which will be released later this year!

ENCHANTYA are:

Rute Fevereiro – Vocals

Nuno Seven – Guitar

MP – Bass

João Paulo Monteiro – Drums

Bruno Prates – Guitar

FURYON – ‘Disappear Again’ (Official Video) – Debut Album ‘Gravitas’ Releases March 23rd, Via Frontiers Records

Posted in Hard Rock, hard rock albums, hard rock bands, Heavy Metal, heavy metal news, heavy metal videos, melodic hard rock, melodic metal, Music, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , , , , on March 10, 2012 by Metal Odyssey

FURYON – If you’re a fan of Hard Rock, Melodic Hard Rock and/or Melodic Heavy Metal, then do yourself a favor today and click on that FURYON video below. Disappear Again is sweltering with melodic guitars and vocals, along with more hooks than a fishing supply store on Cape Cod, Massachusetts. To say this song is an addictive listen (for me) is a gross understatement.

I wanted to hear an album or song this morning that would kickstart my Saturday into high Rockin’ gear, thus I turned to a band and album I’ve yet to check out until now. I am battling a stupid-ass cold and received a welcomed “lift” from a song that I wound up listening to at least 15 (or more) times while I slapped this post together. Disappear Again is that song. One damn vibrant rhythm section. Very cool guitar licks and the vocals of Matt Mitchell are stuff of 80’s Arena Rock jubilation.

The all-encompassing Melodic Hard Rockin’ vibe that FURYON delivers on this song has made my F’n day. Looks like FURYON has a nomination for Metal Odyssey’s Hard Rock song of 2012… signed, sealed and delivered. Metal be thy name.

The debut album from FURYON, Gravitas, will be released on March 23rd, 2012 in Europe and March 27th in North America. FURYON is signed to the ultra-Rockin’ Frontiers Records.

FURYON:

Matt Mitchell – Vocals

Chris Green – Guitars

Pat Heath – Guitars

Alex “Nickel” Bowen – Bass

Lee Farmery – Drums

Here’s the track listing for Gravitas:

Disappear Again

Stand Like Stone

Souvenirs

Voodoo Me

Fear Alone

Wasted On You

ASCARIASIS – Debut EP “Ocean of Colour” Is Available Now!

Posted in Heavy Metal, heavy metal albums, heavy metal news, metal music, Music, progressive death metal, progressive metal, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , , , , on March 4, 2012 by Metal Odyssey

Canadian Progressive Death Metal band Ascariasis have released their debut EP Ocean of Colour. The EP consists of five songs: Shatter, Torchbearer, Eleven, Ocean of Colour, and Carving the World. The album art was designed by Cameron Gray, notable for creating album art for bands such as Born of Osiris, Dead Letter Circus and Fallujah.

Ascariasis embodies a new breed of Modern Canadian Metal. This four piece, founded in 2009, includes Evan Watton (vocals), Devin Kendall (bass), Mike Valeri (guitars), and Mark Poelmann (drums). They bring a unique mix of crushing brutality, agonizing passages and soaring melodies to the scene. With influences ranging from the most technical and chaotic Metal styles to Ambient and Classical, the band seeks to break beyond expectations and deliver a fresh blend of Melodic, Technical and Progressive Death Metal while staying true to their local roots.

“I think this EP is a good window into the mindset that shapes our view on music and Metal in general,” says bassist Devin Kendall. “We look at it in the sense that we don’t have to assign a particular genre to our sound and we leave it as free-form and thought-provoking as possible.”

Ascariasis has been featured in various publications including heavyblogisheavy.com. They are currently working on their debut album, which is set to be released in 2013.

ASCARIASIS originates from Burlington, Ontario.

NIGHTQUEEN ‘For Queen And Metal’ – An Indelible Debut Album Of Heavy Metal

Posted in Heavy Metal, heavy metal albums, heavy metal news, melodic metal, metal music, Music, Power Metal, rock music, rock music news, symphonic metal with tags , , , , , , , on February 24, 2012 by Metal Odyssey

NIGHTQUEEN – Releasing today, February 24th, via Massacre Records, is the debut album from Belgium’s Nightqueen. Fronted by the dynamic vocals of Keely Larreina, this is a band and album that shouldn’t get missed by fans of Symphonic, Epic, Melodic or Power Metal. What am I thinking? It’s all about Heavy Metal in the first place. This debut from Nightqueen begins fittingly with Into The Night, a symphonic intro that elevates the mood, setting the stage for what shall be a momentous and inspiring ride of Melodic Metal.

Nightfall follows, with Keely’s vocals showcasing her impressive range and capacity to sing Power Metal with conviction. Nightfall and Mystical Nights are two songs that truly get this debut album from Nightqueen propelling in the right direction. The Power Metal meets Symphonic Metal combination that Nightqueen executes, springs from the Metal gates rather impressively. Now the path has been paved and Nightqueen erupts with all the Power Metal goodness they can muster with the title track. For Queen And Metal is a fabulous listen into what this band can deliver! Whoa.

Lady Fantasy and Nocturnal Thoughts are sung with powerful eloquence by Keely and she is a voice to hear. Her ability to bring that added convincing emotion to the song is an asset in itself. Guitarists Rex Zeco and Alan Rawson complement one another, adding the muscular melodies with energized leads and solos, not only on these two aforementioned songs, they both execute brilliantly throughout this entire album.

Secret Of The Blind Man encompasses every standout attribute that I admire about Nightqueen. This song is Symphonic, it’s Power Metal and radiates with an epic ambience. I can’t help feeling inspired from this song’s instrumentation. Nightqueen never loses their flare for keeping it Metal on their debut. I hear slivers and shades of Traditional Metal, especially on Majesty. Riffs abound in Majesty and Keely sings as if she should be standing atop a mountain, looking down upon her minions, in an 80’s style music video. Grand stuff it is indeed.

Nightqueen is that band that impresses me from every corner, for if it’s not Keely’s vocals that are captivating me, then it’s the symphonic atmosphere or the masterly drumming of William Blodyn. The keyboards of Daniel Kells amplifies that ever expressive European vibe and flavor. Steven Steele stands tall on bass, giving these Nightqueen songs their booming beats that reveal themselves so plentifully. Then of course, as I’ve previously mentioned, Rex and Alan are an adept guitar duo that can easily steal the Metal show. If there is one complaint I have, it’s I wish Nightqueen was around twenty or so years ago.

For Queen And Metal is one enjoyable debut album to encounter from Nightqueen. This band has no problem in conveying their totality of talent to my ears. I was looking forward to this debut from Nightqueen for many months, now I realize why. If you like what I’ve stated about Nightqueen and their brand of Metal, then there should be no apprehension in the air you are currently breathing… for you are hereby dismissed to venture out and purchase this noble debut from Nightqueen. To me, this group has earned the right to have their name and Metal known across the seas. Hail to Nightqueen!

In a statement on the band’s website Ivy wrote:

“After 4 amazing years of jamming with my crazy metal sisters of Kittie, I am officially resigning as their bass player.

I’ve had an incredible time touring the world with these ladies and I am very grateful for all the fun I’ve had and amazing things I’ve had the opportunity to experience.

My last appearances with Kittie will be our upcoming hometown shows in London (February 17th) and Toronto (February 18th), as well as the Soundwave festival in Australia immediately after (February 25th – March 5th). I wish the Kittie girls the best of luck in all of their future endeavours and I know they will continue to be successful in whatever they do.”

Trish comments:

“I am very happy to be reunited with the Kittie family. The girls and I have remained close friends over the last 7 years and I am excited to have this amazing opportunity. I am looking forward to seeing everyone when we go back on the road this spring. I wish Ivy all the best!”

Morgan Lander about Ivy’s departure and Trish’s return:

“Ivy has been friend and partner in crime for over 4 years, we love and respect her wishes to depart from the band and move onto another phase in her life.

PHARAOH – ‘Bury The Light’ – Weaves Both Melodic and Epic Metal, While Keeping It Heavy

Posted in Heavy Metal, heavy metal albums, heavy metal news, melodic metal, metal music, Music, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , , , on January 31, 2012 by Metal Odyssey

PHARAOH –  Returning with their new full-length, Bury The Light, Pennsylvania’s Pharaoh has weaved Melodic and Epic Metal together, with slivers of progressiveness, making for a marvelous listen. This being the fourth album from Pharaoh, it is a 10 song experience, guitar driven, rhythmically pumped and vocally solid. Tim Aymar is not just belting out Heavy Metal lyrics, he is singing songs of story-filled substance. The Helloweenish bass of Chris Kerns and stellar drumming of Chris Black are a potent and fun listen together, throughout this album.

Then there is the guitar playing of Matt Johnsen, where he embellishes that progressive tone on par with what I’ve grown accustomed to from the six-string wizards of Iron Maiden and Queensrÿche.   To a flirtatious degree, Matt exhibits the poignant tones of  Steve Howe’s eloquence. Matt isn’t all about tearing-it-up and piling-up the riffs, instead this is one polished guitarist who plays with a glorious respect for Melodic Metal.

If you’re unfamiliar with Pharaoh, Tim Aymar is a vocally muscular Dan McCafferty. Gritty, sandpapered vocal cords and still able to sing on a melodic level. I could no doubt deny that Tim Aymar could sing the entire No Mean City album from the legendary Nazareth and  blow my mind away in doing so. Regardless of my comparative silliness, Pharaoh is a paradigm for younger bands to hear and realize that Heavy Metal as music isn’t just about booze, fast women and overdosing to near death.

Castles In The Sky is the signature song on Bury The Light for my ears. Flowing with every nugget of Melodic Metal that Pharaoh can muster, while infusing synthetic vocals akin to that of ELO or Mr. Roboto, this band can turn a surprise progressive trick when they want to. The Year Of The Blizzard is the epic that you must hear, to understand fully just how authentic Pharaoh is as a group of musicians. Summoning up the twilight dreamscape of RUSH’s brilliance from 2112, Pharaoh has genuinely tapped into a progressive realm they can surely call their own on The Year Of The Blizzard.

Please excuse all the previous musical comparisons, only when an album this great can trigger my mind to recall works of art from Hard Rock and Metal of years long past, then said album may indeed one day be recalled a work of art itself. For now, Bury The Light is that honest and great album of Melodic Metal from skilled musicians, an album that doesn’t compromise on heaviness, nor shall it short change you on its dynamical presentation.

CORONATUS ‘Terra Incognita’ – 5 Reasons Why You Should Get Into This Gothic Metal Album

Posted in gothic metal, gothic metal bands, Heavy Metal, heavy metal albums, heavy metal news, melodic metal, metal music, rock music, rock music news, symphonic metal with tags , , , , , , , , on January 11, 2012 by Metal Odyssey

CORONATUS – One of the best albums I’ve listened to from 2011 is Terra Incognita from Germany’s Gothic Metal Band: Coronatus. This is a band and album that can’t be overlooked by any diverse Metal fan. I would love to see Coronatus become a huge favorite among the Metal masses in North America, their entire sound and attention to detail with their music is impressive and lures me in song after song. Below are five reasons why you should consider adding Terra Incognita to your list of must have albums.

Reason #1: Coronatus is a band that obviously loves music, period. This is a Metal band, only Coronatus knows how to create music. They cross over many Metal genres with Terra Incognita. Yes, this band and album will appeal highly to Gothic Metal fans, yet Melodic, Symphonic and Traditional Metal fans can easily hear many elements on Terra Incognita that they can surely embrace.

Reason #2: On Terra Incognita, everything comes together so fine. The keyboard arrangements and orchestration belongs with and compliments so well the melodic guitar parts and heavy riffs. The union of melodic and heavy just sounds and feels incredibly genuine throughout this entire album.

Reason #3: Mareike Makosch (Alto Voice) and Lady Ada Flechtner (Rock Soprano) could easily steal the show on Terra Incognita, if not for the masterful totality of musicianship that this band excels with. However, I find my ears absorbing the vocals of these two beautiful voices and being left nearly spellbound. This is an album that I listen to time and again and still hear something new consistently.

Reason #4: The European sound and vibe from Coronatus is infectious. Regardless if the song is sung in German (Fernes Land) or English (Dead Man’s Tale), the end result is a definitive listen into just how passionate these two female vocalists are about the song. This passion for song that I hear is a universal language all its own.

Reason #5: There is never a moment where I want to skip over a song on Terra Incognita. The cumulative listen brings about a mood that is epic and a vibe that is celebratory. The cool aspect of listening to a band such as Coronatus and their newest gem Terra Incognita, is that I know I will hear a presentation that is all importantly memorable. Standing out and being original are qualities that this band easily bestows and conveys musically on Terra Incognita.

Yes, I highly recommend Terra Incognita. Coronatus receives a well deserved Metal bravo from me and I stand by this Metal sentiment.

* Terra Incognita is the fourth studio album from Coronatus, released via Massacre Records on November 18th, 2011.

BEAK – Debut Album, EYRIE, Set For April 3rd, 2012 Release

Posted in Hard Rock, Heavy Metal, heavy metal news, melodic metal, metal music, Music, progressive metal, progressive rock, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , , , on January 10, 2012 by Metal Odyssey

Jan. 10, 2012, Chicago – Beak, the Post-Metal quartet formed by local Chicago luminaries Chris Eichenseer and Jason Goldberg previously of The Timeout Drawer, release Eyrie, the band’s debut album on Apr. 3 via Someoddpilot Records.

Recorded and mixed in late-2011 at Engine Studios by Neil Strauch (Sage Francis, Bonnie Prince Billy), the five-track release highlights the band’s adept combination of blistering heaviness and melodic prog-rock.

“Metal for the sake of it just doesn’t interest us. We need more than heavy riffage and the trappings of the genre,” expained Eichenseer. “I wish we could call it something else, because to me it’s more. We’re not afraid to carry influence from our roots in post to Punk Rock. We’re very aware of storytelling and depth. We’re not interested in skulls.”

Vocalist Jon Slusher discussed the conceptual aspect of the debut album: “Eyrie is the nest of a bird of prey built in a high, inaccessible place.  The album is conceptual.  It’s the path of ruin, the crumbling of empires and the marching of time. ”

Beak is Andy Bosnak (Guitar), Chris Eichenseer (Drums), Jason Goldberg (Bass, Vocals) and Jon Slusher (Guitar, Lead Vocals).

EYRIE – Track Listing:

Angry Mother of Bones

Hands Collide

Men at Arms

Billions of Eyes

The Weight & Time

* The band’s next performance is February 23rd, at Reggie’s (Chicago) with Anvil. An April tour will be announced shortly.

ALMAH – ‘Motion’: Brazilian Metal At Its Very, Very Finest and An Album To Absorb

Posted in album reviews, Heavy Metal, heavy metal albums, heavy metal news, melodic metal, metal music, Music, Power Metal, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , , , on January 10, 2012 by Metal Odyssey

ALMAH – Releasing in North America on January 17th, via AFM Records, is the third studio album from Brazil’s fantastically talented Metal band: ALMAH. To say this is one Metal album to own in 2012 feels like a call of Metal duty on my part. Angra vocalist Edu Falaschi is paired with his Angra bandmate Felipe Andreoli on bass, with Marcelo Barbosa and Paulo Schroeber on guitars and Marcelo Moreira on drums. Whoa, can both Marcelo and Paulo play them guitars! Metal be thy name. This album boasts some unbelievable guitar driven moments, all which leaves my eyes bugging out of my head. Seriously.

Edu Falaschi has somewhat silently become a premier vocalist in the world of Metal. You may not see Edu’s name on many top-ten lists for vocalists, only make no mistake, he takes a backseat to not many of his peers, in my Metal opinion. As a band, ALMAH can play their Metal fast, heavy and melodic. The glowing appeal about ALMAH is their ability to mix-it-up on Motion. ALMAH does not fall into any tidy comfort zone when it comes to Metal.

Motion opens up with Hypnotized and ALMAH delivers some crunchy and steel reinforced Metal on this song. Add into the mix a muscular rhythm section, backing vocals that elevates the high vibe, with mouth-watering guitars spewing out unyielding riffs, leads and a killer solo and you have… Metal bliss. Late Night  In ’85 is mid-paced and still has the ability to psyche-out my senses. If I’ve said it once, I’ll say it again, Edu can sing and he soars on Late Night In ’85. This song also benefits from an amazing guitar solo at the 3/4 mark, bringing Late Night In ’85 to a glorious finish, simultaneously with Edu’s vocals.

Daydream Lucidity is a marvelous listening journey. This song showcases the melodic vocals of Edu and the guitars of Marcelo and Paulo. With illuminating guitar parts that are shredding and other parts melodic, Daydream Lucidity is a shining moment on Motion. When and Why is atmospheric from its opening note, with a tremendous help from tones created by some brilliant acoustic guitar. ALMAH created a ballad here with When and Why and it resonates emotion courtesy of Edu’s vocals. It makes for a cool and mellow way to close out Motion.

Lyrically smart and coming across so spontaneous are the songs on Motion. This is an ultra-talented band of musicians and ALMAH can take a bow for an album I’ve listened to many times over already. ALMAH has proven there is creativity in Metal without being straight-lined progressive and their new album Motion is not to be ignored… it’s to be absorbed.

MOTION – Track Listing:

Hypnotized

Living and Drifting

Days of the New

Bullets On the Altar

Zombies Dictator

Trace of Trait

Soul Alight

Late Night in ’85

Daydream Lucidity

When and Why

Title of new Epica album released: Epica’s 5th full-length album which will be released on the 9th of March 2012 by Nuclear Blast will be called:

REQUIEM FOR THE INDIFFERENT

This title refers to the end of an era. Mankind can no longer stick their head in the sand for the things that are happening around us. We are facing many challenges. There is an enormous tension between different religions and cultures, wars, natural disasters and a huge financial crisis, which is getting out of control. More than ever we will need each other to overcome these problems. As we are all connected; the universe, earth, nature, animals and human beings, this period in time will be the prelude to the end for those who still don’t want to, or simply won’t see it. A REQUIEM FOR THE INDIFFERENT but also a possibility for a new beginning with great new chances!

Epica will present this album to the public on the 16th of March 2012, in 013, Tilburg (NL) tickets are still available but are going out fast!

Keep an eye on the official Epica website and social media for regular updates on REQUIEM FOR THE INDIFFERENT!

NIGHTQUEEN – Signs To Massacre Records

Posted in Heavy Metal, heavy metal news, melodic metal, metal music, metal odyssey, Music, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , , , on November 23, 2011 by Metal Odyssey

Massacre Records are happy to announce the signing of NIGHTQUEEN from Genk, Belgium!

NIGHTQUEEN’s history began in late 2004 when guitarist and songwriter Rex Zeco decided to compose a kind of metal for everyone. The formula was simple: strong guitar riffs, upgraded with the Modern Metal beats and a melodic melody with catchy tunes that stay stuck in the head for a long time.

The band reformed a few times before the right line-up was found: Keely Larreina (Lead vocals), Daniel Kells (Keyboards), Rex Zeco (Guitar), Alan Rawson (Guitar), Steven Steele (Bass) and William Blodyn (Drums).

Only a couple of weeks to go until Christmas, that’s why NIGHTQUEEN present the ultimate Christmas metal song: “X-Mas Wonderland”.

The song was recorded at the Full Moon Studio in Genk, Tony De Block mixed the song at the Midas Recording Studios in Lokeren, where “X-Mas Wonderland” was also mastered.

You can watch the “X-Mas Wonderland” video clip here: http://youtu.be/Z8uBvdg1214

The band is also offering a free wallpaper on their website http://www.nightqueen.be/ in the media section.

LOVE.MIGHT.KILL – “Down To Nowhere” Video-Clip Released & More Band Info!

Posted in Heavy Metal, heavy metal news, melodic metal, metal music, metal odyssey, Music, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , , , on November 19, 2011 by Metal Odyssey

German-/Italian Melodic-Metallers LOVE.MIGHT.KILL released their second video-clip “Down To Nowhere”. The track is taken from their highly acclaimed debut-album “Brace For Impact” which was released in Europe through Massacre Records this year. LOVE.MIGHT.KILLs first single “Pretty Little Mess” featured the very melodic side of the band while “Down to nowhere” is a heavy-uptempo-rocker.

“Brace For Impact” was released in Japan through Hydrant Music/EMI on November, 16th. The Japanese-edition of the album features a bonus-track called “Satans Den”.

LOVE.MIGHT.KILL also welcomes SASCHA ONNEN (ex-Mob Rules) on keyboards as a permanent member. Commented drummer and producer Michael Ehré: “We´re absolutely happy to have Sascha on board! His incredible skills will lift LOVE.MIGHT.KILL to another level!”

New Line-Up:

JAN MANENTI – vocals

MICHAEL EHRÉ – drums

STEFAN ELLERHORST -guitar

CHRISTIAN STÖVER – guitar

JOGI SWEERS – bass

SASCHA ONNEN – keyboards

LOVE.MIGHT.KILL was founded in 2009 by FIREWIND/ULI JON ROTH/METALIUM-drummer MICHAEL EHRÉ. After touring all around the world with several bands and writing songs for German-Metallers METALIUM, Japanese-female-Metal-vocalist SAEKO or ex-ZED YAGO-founder JUTTA WEINHOLD, he realised his vision of an own band by writing, recording and producing LOVE.MIGHT.KILLs debut-album BRACE FOR IMPACT. In  addition with the brilliant Italian-singer JAN MANENTI as a co-writer, long-time-friends CHRISTIAN STÖVER and STEFAN ELLERHORST (who were both playing in German-based-Metal band CROSSROADS) on guitars and JOGI SWEERS on bass LOVE.MIGHT.KILLs outstanding line-up was completed.

BRACE FOR IMPACT features 13 stunning Melodic-Metal-tracks in the tradition of the bands longtime favourites like f.e. RAINBOW, JUDAS PRIEST, DIO or BLACK SABBATH. Michaels production and MARKUS TESKEs mix (SAGA, VANDEN PLAS, SPOCKS BEARD) underwrites the fact that LOVE.MIGHT.KILLs debut-album will convince all Melodic-Metal-maniacs all around the world.

“Brace For Impact” Japanese-edition-tracklist:

Tomorrow never comes
Calm before the storm
Pretty little mess
Caught in a dream
Satans den (Bonus-track/Japan only)
Through the dawn
Brace for impact
We are the weak
Down to nowhere
Pray to your god
Reach out
The answer
Will love remain
