Originally forming in 2016, BLACKSITES combine old school metal elements and draw inspiration from a wide spectrum of artists such as VOIVOD, THIN LIZZY, and BLACK SABBATH to name a few. The new release follows their previous albums In Monochrome (2017), and Exile (2019) which made Angry Metal Guy’s #3 album of the year. Untrue delivers intricate guitar leads, powerful percussion and soaring vocals.
The album explores the variations of BLACK SITES’ sound from the dramatic opening “Sword of Orion”, gradually building the anticipation to an intense climax, to the progressive nature of “Echo of a Lie”, and the emotional performance of “White Ashes”. Exploring sophisticated melodies enhanced through delicious guitar tones and powerful vocals, Untrue is an enticing record.
Effortlessly entwining elements of traditional metal with progressive experimentation and their own distinctive style, BLACK SITES have produced a release with huge impact. From beginning to end Untrue reveals their creativity on a sojourn not to be missed.
Line-Up: Mark Sugar – Vocals, Guitar Ryan Bruchert – Guitar, Vocals Garry Naples – Drums
LIVINGWRECKAGE – a new metal powerhouse comprised of vocalist JeffGard (Death Ray Vision), guitarists JonDonais (Anthrax, Shadows Fall), MattLeBreton (Downpour), bassist MattBachand (Shadows Fall, Act of Defiance) and drummer JonMorency (Let Us Prey) – have signed with M-Theory Audio. The group’s debut single “Breaking Point” – described by Revolver as “a throwback rager that sees Donais and LeBreton shredding their hearts out while Gard showcases his John Bush-esque pipes” – was revealed earlier this year through a music video that can be viewed HERE. The soon-to-be-renowned collective’s blasts of melodic, over-driven power will be further unleashed at upcoming live performances throughout New England for five weekends, beginning with a headlining performance this past Saturday, July 31 in Agawam, Mass.
The as-yet-untitled debut album from LIVINGWRECKAGE – produced and engineered by Shane Frisby (Unearth, Bury Your Dead), and mixed by Pete Rutcho (Revocation, Falling in Reverse) – will be released later this year. In the meantime, the band and M-Theory Audio have teamed up to make a three-song EP titled “One Foot in the Grave” available to metal enthusiasts who are fortunate enough to attend the group’s upcoming live shows. Copies of the EP sold at these dates will be autographed and hand-numbered by band members. Fans who don’t live in New England will have an opportunity to get their hands on “One Foot in the Grave” later this year, as the EP is now available for pre-order (to be fulfilled in September) HERE.
Says Bachand, “LIVING WRECKAGE is thrilled to announce our partnership with M-Theory Audio and finally get this train rolling. Jon Donais and I have been working with Marco for over 20 years with Shadows Fall, including the recent vinyl reissues. It only makes sense for us to add LIVING WRECKAGE as a part of the M-Theory family. They have a clear understanding that this is not simply a ‘side project’ for us and hope to take it as far as we can. There are some big plans on the horizon, and we are looking forward to finally getting some music into all of your hands very soon!”

Bay Area Thrashers INFEX have released a lyric video for “The Abyss,” a track from forthcoming album Burning in Exile. The video was directed and edited by Lance Woodruff. Commence thrashing at youtu.be/k-4IbkTi9dk or below:
Concerning the lyrical inspiration for “The Abyss,” the band had this to say:
“The Abyss was inspired by the famous quote from Friedrich Nietzsche – ‘Whoever fights monsters should see to it that in the process he does not become a monster. And if you gaze long enough into an abyss, the abyss will gaze back into you.’
We find the quote relatable more than ever in today’s super-charged political and existential social climates. That which we hate, we become. The Abyss is a metaphor for the oppressive anxiety of the modern day social climate. It’s like staring into the darkness of the Abyss, overwhelmed with fear of what happens when we come out the other side. As it consumes you, you become one with it, and panic attack becomes the daily norm.”
INFEX will self-release Burning in Exile on August 13th on CD, digital and limited edition red translucent 12″ vinyl formats.
In case you missed it, check out the official video for album track “Acid Reign” at youtu.be/EDjRsqTlfCE
Line-up: Jack – Guitars and Vocals, Adam – Guitars and vocals, RC – Bass and vocals, Corey – Drums
Though the sound of Burning inExile is firmly anchored in a ripping form of thrash metal, elements of old school hardcore and crossover metal are present as well. Having grown up during the Thrash Metal heyday and listening to genre pioneers like Exodus, Kreator, Destruction, Slayer, Dark Angel and the like, along with old-school hardcore influences like Discharge, Attitude Adjustment, Cryptic Slaughter, DRI, and Excel, INFEX blends the styles of all these and more into a raw outpouring of aggression and anger.
Burning in Exile was recorded at Trident Studios in Martinez, CA (Machine Head, Vio-Lence, Testament, Exodus). It was produced, engineered, mixed and mastered by Juan Urteaga. INFEX booked the studio time in late 2019 and began recording in March of 2020, right as the Covid-19 pandemic became serious. Due to the lockdown, the recording sessions were spaced out further than anticipated, resulting in the inspiration for the album title, Burning in Exile. The band’s album release show happens on August 14th at 3 Disciples Brewing in Santa Rosa, California.
Long-running heavy metal supergroup DOWN, featuring vocalist Philip H. Anselmo, guitarists Pepper Keenan and Kirk Windstein, drummer Jimmy Bower, and bassist Pat Bruders, will return to the stage Friday, August 13th for a very special in-person live and virtual experience!
The fittingly titled NOLA Town Throwdown will take place at the Fillmore in New Orleans, Louisiana. Fans can attend the show in person while those who can’t make it, can still catch it in real time from the comfort of their living room! Support will be provided by special guest comedian Dave Hill.
Comments the band:
Philip H. Anselmo: “It’s gonna be great to play our home town again! Always a blast!”
Pepper Keenan: “NOLA Town Throwdown is a long time coming. Let’s do this and make it epic! Up the hammers!”
Pat Bruders: “Through the hard times and now for the good times, this is gonna be a very special show for everyone! We’re ready to turn it up and slam it DOWN!”
Kirk Windstein: “Playing on stage with my brothers in DOWN is always a special moment to me. We can’t wait to blow the roof off of The Fillmore! Being in NOLA takes this to a whole new level!”
Jimmy Bower: “It’s been way too long, y’all! I can’t remember the last time we played NOLA. On Friday, August 13th we will play our hometown. A DOWNshow y’all! Old friends, good times, and great tunes on a superstitious night! We’re ready to jam, are you?”
Tickets go on sale Friday, July 9th at 10:00am central time through Livenation.com for the live event and down-nola.com for the livestream. Don’t miss out – tickets will go quick!
You know it’s DOWN as soon as you hear them. That’s the way it’s always been, and nothing will ever change that. There’s no mistaking those gargantuan riffs, swamp blues leads, crashing drums, and hypnotic howls for absolutely anybody else under the sun. Philip H. Anselmo, Pepper Keenan, Jimmy Bower, Pat Bruders, and Kirk Windstein uphold a certain tradition that countless fans celebrate, expanding their own musical mythos as they leave its pillars intact and untouched.
With a collective resume encompassing Pantera, Corrosion Of Conformity, Crowbar, and EyeHateGod, the quintet puffed out its first haze of sonic smoke from the belly of gritty old New Orleans on the 1995 platinum-selling classic, NOLA. At that moment, they naturally summoned something akin to a ritual, continually partaking in it with critically revered offerings — Down II: A Bustle In Your Hedgerow in 2002, Down III: Over The Under in 2007, Down IV – Part One in 2012, and Down IV – Part Two in 2014. Their shows built a certain live lore with unforgettable runs alongside Metallica and Heaven & Hell as well as coveted spots on iconic fests like Download, Soundwave, Ozzfest, and so many others forever delivering passionate, powerful, pure heavy music you can feel deep down in your soul.
The last time I saw War Curselive it was at Oddbody’s in Dayton, Ohio and they lit the place up! Of course that was before the Covid nightmare; I figure it was four years ago or so. Regardless, I am chomping at the bit to see War Curse live again many more times.
War Curse originate from Cincinnati, Ohio and could have fit in rather appropriately during the golden age of Thrash. I’m not bullshitting you. I experienced that beginning era of Thrash Metal (in the pits) and I take my Thrash seriously. War Curse has had some lineup changes since their 2015 debut release Final Days and are currently preparing for their 2021 live dates.
Since the release of Final Days, War Curse have released a full-length studio album in 2019 titled: Eradication. If you want to sink your Metal battered brain into Final Days then you have my Metal blessings. I bought Final Days on cassette from the merch table at the War Curse show. Needless to say, I have played this cassette so often it feels like an appendage. I have a cassette player built into my 21 year old car, just in case you were wondering.
Above: my War Curse Final Days cassette
The vocalist for War Curse on this debut is Tarek Puska and he manifests all of the brawn and dominance I look for in a Metal voice. War Curse doesn’t try to be like any other Thrash band; however they do a dynamite undertaking of being, well, War Curse. Guitarists JoshuaMurphy and Justin Roth are a formidable duo and a blast to get into. Damn good stuff. Eric Payne on bass and James Goetz on drums lay down the rhythmic foundation on Final Days.
The songs on Final Days are lyrically pissed-off and find their footing to be 100% relevant in this dreadful year of 2020. Find it, buy it, borrow it, listen to it and whatever you do play this debut from War Curse extremely loud! Metal be thy name – Stone.
Above: my variant (and extremely limited) copy of War Curse Final Days, with different artwork and green cassette shell; track listing is the same.

Italy’s SOUL DRAGGER has joined forces with Time To Kill Records for the release of their self-titled debut album.

SOUL DRAGGER started in Rome in 2017. The band was founded by singer/guitarist Alessio “Alex” Pompedda and combines traditional Eighties metal with thrash, melodic death metal and metal-core influences. The final result bears comparisons with acts such as Machine Head, Trivium, Testament, Unearth and All That Remains.

With All Hallows’ Eve and the Day of the Dead fast approaching, the L.A.-based thrash/death/shred quartet EXMORTUS has unveiled a visualizer for the title track for their just-released horror-themed EP Legions of the Undead. Check out the clip – which was designed by Wayne Joyner (Dream Theater, Devin Townsend). Watch it HERE or below:
Says guitarist Jadran “Conan” Gonzalez, “Just in time for Halloween, enjoy this video of the new EP title track, ‘Legions of the Undead,’ inspired by the darker themes in Tolkien & Lovecraft lore. We are extremely excited to perform the new songs on Death Angel’s North American Humanicide Tour this November and December. See you on the road, Legions!”
As Gonzalez acknowledged, the song “Legions of the Dead” nods to the Dead Men of Dunharrow in “Lord Of The Rings.” It is joined on the new EP by one other new original track – the “Evil Dead”-inspired “Swallow Your Soul” – as well as three instrumental covers: renditions of Danny Elfman’s “Beetlejuice” theme and Bernard Hermann’s theme from Alfred Hitchcock’s horror classic “Psycho,” as well as a neoclassical shred take on 19th Century Russian composer Modest Mussorgsky’s haunting “Night On Bald Mountain.”
Recorded earlier this year with longtime producer Zack Ohren (Machine Head, Immolation) at Oakland’s Sharkbite Studios, “Legions Of The Undead” – the cover art for which was designed by Toha “AHOT” Mashudi – is now available via the band’s own Exmortus Music in cooperation with M-Theory Audio. Physical copies can be ordered on CD and limited-edition green slime-colored vinyl HERE.
“Legions Of The Undead” marks the first EXMORTUS release featuring the lineup – founding guitarist/vocalist Gonzalez, guitarist Chase Becker (also of Warbringer), bassist Cody Nunez and drummer Adrian Aguilar – that has logged numerous miles on the road together over the past two years with the likes of Obituary, Venom Inc., Sabaton, Kreator, Havok, Allegaeon, Hatchet, Homewrecker and The Absence. The group – whose most recent performance was alongside Exodus at the legendary thrash group’s sold-out “Bonded By Con” concert during San Diego’s recent Comic-Con – will support another iconic Bay Area act this fall, when they team up with Death Angel for a five-week tour across the U.S. and Canada. See below for the complete itinerary.
Founded by Gonzalez when he was just 12 years old, EXMORTUS released their debut album, “In Hatred’s Flame,” via Heavy Artillery in 2008. After gaining additional acclaim with their 2011 sophomore effort “Beyond The Fall Of Time,” the group signed a three-album deal with Prosthetic Records in 2013. In support of that acclaimed trilogy of releases (2014’s “Slave To The Sword,” 2016’s “Ride Forth” and 2018’s “The Sound Of Steel”), the band toured alongside some of metal’s biggest names, including Amon Amarth, Children of Bodom, Abbath, Dark Tranquillity and Marty Friedman, earning extensive praise along the way for their live power, prowess and proficiency.

Southern Lord has issued the details of WOLFBRIGADE‘s impending tenth full-length, The Enemy: Reality, now confirmed for release on November 8th.
On the wind-bitten plains of Skaraborg, Sweden, the wolves have arisen once again. They are on the prowl, yearning for your blood, warm and fresh. On their tenth album, WOLFBRIGADE cuts deep, and they are ruthless. This time they have only submitted to themselves, from recording to production and artwork working in isolation, resulting in heightened senses and sharpened fangs. The ten songs rip into both body and mind, with no holds barred regarding power, substance, and melody.
This time around, WOLFBRIGADE‘s hybrid beast of Swedish hardcore and death metal known as Lycanthro Punk has become even more distinct. These ten tracks of destruction display both a love for 80s metal hooks and intros, as well as primitive hardcore brutality.
The lyrics on The Enemy: Reality dissect the state of human existence, the bizarre animal presence that we are. The naked apes. Exploring the dynamics that rule man. Power and submission. Manipulation. The injustices of inequality. This is an album seething with anger and frustration.
The band remarks, “Humans are a narcissistic breed, incapable of real change. This album is a way for us to deal with the fact that we are one of a large pack, submitting to the same societal norms as everyone else. No matter how much we would like it to be different. We are all on the same crazy trip.”
The Enemy: Reality will see release through Southern Lord on November 8th. Watch for audio premieres, preorders, and more to post in the weeks ahead. Following a one-off show in Los Angeles, California with Final Conflict and Dropdead and a set at Off Limits Festival in Naucalpan, Mexico last week, expect new live dates for WOLFBRIGADE to post over the coming months.
KING DIAMOND will embark on a North American headlining tour later year. The trek will commence on November 2nd and run through December 4th. Support will be provided by Uncle Acid And The Deadbeats and Idle Hands.
Comments KING DIAMOND, “Watch out North America, we are coming for you this Winter. I’m very proud to bring two special and amazing guests to you. Their names are Uncle Acid And The Deadbeats, plus Idle Hands. Make an appointment now… kingdiamondcoven.com.”
Uncle Acid And The Deadbeats notes, “As the long nights draw in and the temperatures drop, I can’t think of a better artist to creep around North America with than the legendary KING DIAMOND. You’ll all be in for a treat…See you there!”
Adds Idle Hands, “Touring with the iconic KING DIAMOND is nothing short of a dream and we are excited to make it a reality.”
See all confirmed dates below. VIP packages with KING DIAMOND are available for the first time ever on this tour. Visit kingdiamondcoven.com to purchase your ticket or VIP upgrade now.

KING DIAMOND remarks about the upcoming full-length, “For reasons unknown to you, it is clear that you have no way of making it to The Institute on your own at this point. Therefore, we will bring The Institute to you. You don’t want to miss this special opportunity for treatment only we can give you. It could be for your own good, you know…”

The band released their self-titled EP in November of 2017 through Medusa Crush Records and was met with high praise from the likes of Metal Hammer, Exclaim!, and many more.
Having provided local support for Eyehategod, Corrosion of Conformity, Windhand, Satans Satyres, Weedeater, Serial Hawk, Black Wizard, King Buffalo, Set and Setting and Perturbator, Pale Mare have established themselves in their home town of Toronto as a massive force to be reckoned with, and have attracted a loyal fan base through relentlessly crushing live performances. Blackened thrash metal scourge WIDOWER is set to unleash their first-ever full-length album, Cataclysmic Sorcery. This nine-track hellstorm delivers an unrelenting battery of rapid-fire drumming, dueling guitar harmonies, tortured screams and pummeling thrash rhythms. With sadistic intensity, WIDOWER blur the lines of black metal, death and thrash.
Over the course of eight years, this Austin, Texas-based band has released three acclaimed EPs, laid waste to stages across the U.S. and contributed two songs to the film “Zero Charisma.” Cataclysmic Sorcery is the first WIDOWER release to feature drummer Sterling Junkin (Venereal Baptism, Narcotic Wasteland) and bassist JakeHolmes (Churchacide, In Oblivion).

This year, bands from Canada, Tasmania, Mexico, Egypt and USA will gather for the one of a kind festival in the Canadian wilds. Each year an independent band is also sponsored by the festival to further their musical pursuits.

Featured in publications such as Metal Hammer and Billboard, Metalocalypstick Fest not only celebrates women in metal but also gives back to the community. Formed in 2016 as a non-profit organization, they are dedicated to raising funds and donating 100% of proceeds to local charities Girls Rock Camp, Vancouver Rape Relief and Women’s Shelter, and Earth Protectors plus they sponsor an independent band picked by Metalocalypstick Fest judges.
The festival was founded by Kaija Kinney of Vancouver’s Anarcheon after researching a lack of female based metal festivals to apply her band to, Kinney took matters into in her own and decided to produce the event.
“This festival means the celebration of both sexes coming together and creating something amazing. People like to say women in metal aren’t a big deal anymore and that we are all the same. I feel that is untrue, this is still a male dominated world and woman are still looked as lesser. I want to showcase all these bad ass ladies and celebrate the differences of men and woman rather than pretend we are all equal. Truth is we are different why can’t we celebrate that?” says Kinney.

Slovenia’s legendary NOCTIFERIA are just confirmed for this year’s Metal Days 2019, going onstage on Tuesday 23rd July! With these underground legends, ALPHA OMEGA Management will bring to the festival in all 11 bands from its roster, which are in alphabetical order: ALTAIR, ANIMAE SILENTES, ATREXIAL, FALLEN ARISE, HYDRA, KAIROS, NOCTIFERIA, NOX VORAGO, SISKA, UNHUMAN INSURRECTION and W.E.B.!
Metal Days 2019 organizer stated:
“This is the last Artist Announcement for 2019, and all we can say is; be ready for the best Summer Metal Party!”
New Zealand death metal trio ULCERATE have joined the Debemur Morti Productions roster.
Issues the band of the new union: “We are extremely happy to be moving head-first into this next chapter with a partnership that aligns so clearly with our own vision. Debemur Morti has always been in our peripheral gaze – the attention to detail and high level of curation is second-to-none.”
Death metal has always had roots in themes of humanity, darkness, and oppression, but when ULCERATE formed in Auckland, New Zealand in 2000, their unconventional approach to the genre quickly redefined the meaning of those concepts throughout death metal and beyond. The trio’s distinctive treatment of dynamics alongside in-depth lyrical content established the band as a formidable force long before they became the standard-bearers for a new era of death metal, one defined by meticulous passages of understated melodic sensibilities and jarring, tooth-scraping dissonance.
The band’s inexorable march from 2007’s Of Fracture And Failure (2007) to the unparalleled Shrines Of Paralysis (2016) has been terrifying. And it appears the best is yet to come.
Further details on the band’s as-yet-untitled new full-length will be released in the months to come. In the meantime, don’t miss ULCERATE on their upcoming European tour set to commence April 10th and run through April 21st. The trek includes an appearance on this year’s edition of Roadburn.
