The Winery Dogs - promo cover pic - 2013

#1

THE WINERY DOGS – S/T

I’ve written that Motörhead are the greatest power trio alive on planet Earth. Well, um, The Winery Dogs are too. Take your pick! Mike Portnoy (drums), Richie Kotzen (vocals) and Billy Sheehan (bass) were born to make music together! The Winery Dogs are a supergroup prototype. Amen and hallelujah.

I don’t know how to put it all into words, other than WHOA! This is a #1 Hard Rock album of any year! Excellent songs and I won’t waste time on the musicianship. If this is what American Hard Rock is supposed to sound like in 2013 and beyond, then count me in! Freaking legends of Rock ‘N Roll are The Winery Dogs. Metal be thy name.

Alice In Chains - The Devil Put Dinosaurs Here - promo cover

#2

ALICE IN CHAINS

The Devil Put Dinosaurs Here

Alice In Chains couldn’t have delivered a more incredible follow-up to their 2009 gem Black Gives Way To Blue, with The Devil Put Dinosaurs Here. William Duvall once again soars vocally, while Jerry Cantrell’s guitar resonates splendid licks, riffs and tones that equate to iconic territory. This is very much a Classic Rock leaning album; just know the Hard Rock is mouth-watering.

Buckcherry - Confessions - promo - outside cover pic

#3

BUCKCHERRY – Confessions

The best Buckcherry album ever? It comes very, very, very close. Oh, yes, Confessions psyches me out of my Hard Rockin’ mind. I’m guessing that great Hard Rock albums are supposed to do just that.

Read Stone’s album review for Confessions here:

BUCKCHERRY – “Confessions” Is Out Now And It’s: Stone’s METAL Pick Of The Day!

Black Star Riders - All Hell Breaks Loose - promo cover

#4

BLACK STAR RIDERS  – All Hell Breaks Loose

With current members of Thin Lizzy joining forces with drummer Jimmy DeGrassoBlack Star Riders was born. Led by the legendary guitarist Scott Gorham and fronted by Ricky Warwick, the debut album, All Hell Breaks Loose, from Black Star Riders, became an instant Hard Rock Classic to my ears and soul.

The spirit and legacy of Thin Lizzy still reigns within the world-class talent of Black Star Riders; and the songwriting, lyrics and total vibe of this album taps into everything that’s wonderful about Classic Hard Rock. This is an album I never expected to happen and now it’s a keeper for life! Metal be thy name.

Brand New Machine - The Devil Made Me Do It - promo cover pic

BRAND NEW MACHINE

The Devil Made Me Do It

Brand New Machine is an American Hard Rock band YOU NEED to get into! One of the best Rockin’ surprises of 2013 is this album! From start to finish, The Devil Made Me Do It is high-octane Hard Rock on steroids!

PINNICK GALES PRIDGEN – S/T

As power trio’s go, this album will slap you Hard Rockin’ senseless!! I found this CD without knowing of its release at Best Buy and bought it without hearing a single note. That tells you something right there. Yes, there are those times when you CAN judge a book by its cover! Pinnick Gales Pridgen have unreal musical chemistry together and their songs are proof positive!

Deep Purple - Now What ?! - promo cover pic

#8

DEEP PURPLE – NOW WHAT ?!

Now What ?! is Deep Purple’s first studio album since 2005’s Rapture Of The Deep. Now What ?! is a continuation of arguably the most consistent Hard Rock band that ever lived. The undeniably influential Deep Purple have once again taken their unique, rich, Classic Hard Rock sound throughout an entire album and made it sound so complete. Ian Gillan and band have nothing more to prove. Now, it’s time for The Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame to understand this.

King Kobra - II - promo cover pic

#9 (Tie)

KING KOBRA – II

If you wanna have a good time listening to a good times Hard Rock album, then put your good times face on and BUY this fun CD from the everlasting KING KOBRA. #9 (Tie)

STONE TEMPLE PILOTS WITH CHESTER BENNINGTON

HIGH RISE

My God, I never imagined Chester Bennington fronting the grand Stone Temple Pilots. It’s Rock ‘N Roll genius!! This tidy EP packs a genuine punch of incredible musicianship, vocals and songs that are memorable from the start!

Boston - Life Love & Hope - promo album pic - 2013 - #1

#10

BOSTON – Life Love & Hope

To all the naysaying critics out there, Tom Scholz has created a gift for Boston fans. The songs on this album would never have seen the light of day, if it were not for Tom Scholz. Songs of personal importance to this musical mastermind are they; and they come across with Classic Rock brilliance!

The late Brad Delp, along with David Victor, Kimberley Dahme, Tommy DeCarlo and Tom Scholz are all featured lead singers. Louis St. August of Mass lends his talents with backing harmonies on album opener and album gem: Heaven On Earth. Another total surprise release, for me, was Life Love & Hope. Thank you, Tom Scholz.

kxm - band promo pic - 2013 - #200

As reported by Rat Pak Records:

[KXM UPDATE- 1/3/2014] The new super-group “KXM” featuring Ray Luzier of Korn, Doug Pinnick of Kings X and George Lynch are heading into the studio this weekend to put a few final touches on their upcoming debut release. We’ve obviously heard the tracks so here is an accurate description of what you can expect. The songs are truly amazing. Ray’s drumming sounds like 3 dimensional thunder, George’s guitar playing will leave you to wonder if he’s really playing through an amp or if he’s directly plugged into some kind universal energy that only the guitar gods have access to..…then add in Doug Pinnick who brings his rock solid bass grooves, intelligible lyrics and seasoned songwriting talents to the table…..no hype and no joke, KXM is the real deal and you are going to love this album! We will announce official release date sometime later this month. In the meantime, add the KXM official page https://www.facebook.com/KXMofficial

Missing Persons Featuring Dale Bozzio – Return To The Stage For Two Exclusive SoCal Engagements! New Studio Album Releasing March 4th!

Posted in classic rock, Hard Rock, Music, news, rock music, rock music news, world news with tags , , , , , , on January 4, 2014 by Metal Odyssey

Missing Persons med

Los Angeles, CA – After a long absence from the music scene, Missing Persons featuring original vocalist Dale Bozzio will return to the Southern California stage for two special concerts at Saint Rocke in Hermosa Beach on January 10 and at The Coach House in San Juan Capistrano on January 19.

Such memorable hits as “Words,” “Destination Unknown,” and “Walking In L.A.” made Missing Persons a household name in the ‘80s and a staple of early MTV thanks in part to the cutting edge fashion statements of Bozzio. With her unforgettable pink streaked hair, fishbowl bra and bubblewrap jacket, Bozzio would become an iconic figure of rock fashion, the original glam diva, inspiring the likes of Madonna, Gwen Stefani, Lady GaGa, and others! Her vocal style too became a unique signifier of the band’s music, and her voice remains as strong today as it was then!

These two exclusive performances are an exciting prelude to the release of the first studio album of new material to bear the Missing Persons name in over 25 years! The album, titled appropriately enough Missing In Action, was produced by Billy Sherwood and will be released on Cleopatra Records, March 4. Sherwood, whose recent work on the solo album of Star Trek actor William Shatner thrust Sherwood into the national spotlight, composed the album alongside Bozzio and brought a modern twist to the classic Missing Persons’s sound for what is sure to be one of the most talked about comeback records of the year. A record release party is planned and a nationwide tour will launch later in March!

TRACKS

1. Do Or Die

2. Hello, Hello

3. Walk Into The Sun

CORPSESSED – Full-Length Debut “Abysmal Thresholds” Coming Feburary 4th On Dark Descent Records

Posted in Death Metal, death metal bands, Heavy Metal, Metal, metal music, Music, news, rock music, rock music news, world news with tags , , , , , , on January 4, 2014 by Metal Odyssey

Corpsessed - Abysmal Thresholds - promo cover pic

Dark Descent Records will unleash hell upon Earth in the form of Abysmal Thresholds, the full-length debut from Finland’s CORPSESSED.

After terrorizing your ear drums with 2011’s The Dagger and the Chalice and 2012’s self-titled 7-inch, CORPSESSED are poised to thoroughly decimate what’s left of your auditory senses. Abysmal Thresholds is over 47 minutes of Death Metal the way you’ve come to expect from this hard-hitting Finnish band. No fluff, no hyperbole…this is destined to be one of the best albums of 2014, without a doubt. Abysmal Thresholds is set for release on February 4th.

Pre-orders are being taken now at: www.darkdescentrecords.com.

Corpsessed was spawned from putrescent slime in 2007. Vocalist Niko Matilainen, guitarist Matti Mäkelä and drummer Jussi-Pekka Manner were joined by guitarist Jyri Lustig and (de)composing of morbid Death Metal tunes began at the rotting houses of Järvenpää delta-area. The group’s original bass player, Mikko Mäkelä, disappeared in unknown circumstances and was replaced later in 2009 by Mikko Pöllä.

Corpsessed’s first EP The Dagger & The Chalice was released on CD by Dark Descent Records (USA) in May 2011. The vinyl version released by Me Saco Un Ojo (UK) in co-operation with Dark Descent (USA) in October 2011. That release was followed up by a two-track, self-titled 7-inch EP in 2012. The band recently completed work on their debut full-length album, Abysmal Thresholds.

#1

STRYPER – No More Hell To Pay

Stryper gave to their fans, arguably their best studio album ever. With added pristine touches of relevant heaviness, melodies and goose bump inducing vocal harmonies, Stryper delivered 12 top-tier songs with No More Hell To Pay. This inspiring Metal album from Stryper is not just #1 for 2013, it’s an audio personal power tool, here at the Metal Odyssey headquarters. Metal be thy name.

Stryper - promo band pic - #77 - 2013

______________________________

Admittedly, this year’s Metal album releases were enormously better than I ever expected. From the underground Metal bands to those Metal     bands breaking onto the mainstream charts, our Metal family had a victorious and flourishing year that I was proud to promote and cheer about!

2013 saw more legendary Metal bands creating quality music and career defining albums than I’ve ever seen before. The Metal comebacks of Carcass, Witch Cross, Satan and Gorguts (to name a few) are eye-popping to me! I could never be more proud, as a fan.

In my Metal world, I could easily add another 20 albums from 2013 to this list! Regardless, I present to you, Metal Odyssey’s Top 20 Metal Albums Of 2013! I sincerely believe, that each album here is a solid-as-steel piece of art and a true representation of the respective band’s talents and Metal sub-genre that they belong to.

I thank and congratulate each band on this list. Without these bands and their albums, life would undeniably super suck. Metal be thy name.

Motorhead - Aftershock - promo cover pic

#2

MOTÖRHEAD – Aftershock

Easily can be described as a return to what made Motörhead the true Rock ‘N Roll legends they are. One of the best Motörhead albums in their entire iconic catalog. Lemmy, Phil Campbell and Mikkey Dee are, in my opinion, the greatest power trio alive today.

Carcass - Surgical Steel - promo cover pic

#3

CARCASS – Surgical Steel

Carcass returned in 2014. No, I correct myself. Carcass returned with a Metal vengeance in 2014. Just this 1 Carcass album alone makes them ultra legendary. Not one moment on Surgical Steel can be missed. Mesmerizing Metal is Surgical Steel. Amazing stuff.

BLACK SABBATH - 13 - large promo cover pic - 2013 - #3

#4

BLACK SABBATH – 13

Even without the legendary Bill Ward on drums, 13 from Black Sabbath still sounds mega-legendary from this iconic Metal band.

Read Stone’s review of 13 here:

BLACK SABBATH “13″ – Stone’s METAL Pick Of The Day! New Music Videos Streaming Online!

Above review posted on June 16, 2013, on Metal Odyssey.

Sodom - Epitome Of Torture - promo cover pic

#5

SODOM – Epitome Of Torture

I mentioned here on Metal Odyssey during 2013 that SODOM’s Epitome Of Torture is one of the best of Thrash Metal albums I’ve ever listened to. This album is pummeling, raw and in-your-face Thrash Metal, done the old school way.

Soulfly - Savages - promo cover pic!

#6

SOULFLY – Savages

Metal warrior Max Cavalera brought in his son Zyon on drums – and with the super talents of Marc Rizzo (guitars) and Tony Campos (bass), Savages is (yet again) another explosive Metal album from Soulfly!

WitchCross-CoverArt-DimitarNikolov.psd

#7

WITCH CROSS – Axe To Grind

Easily, the comeback band and album of 2013. Witch Cross dug deep into their musical Metal roots and captured Metal lightning in a 6-pack! Unreal good songs and new vocalist Kev Moore soars! An instant Metal classic, the instant I listened to Axe To Grind.

Read Stone’s review of Axe To Grind here:

WITCH CROSS “Axe To Grind” – A Legendary Return To Metal Prominence!

Above review posted on July 31, 2013, on Metal Odyssey.

Satan - Life Sentence - promo cover pic - 2013

#8

SATAN – Life Sentence

SATAN accomplished quite the Metal comeback of their own with Life Sentence. SATAN returned to remind us all that they are an important part of Heavy Metal history and Life Sentence is audio proof of that.

Read Stone’s review of Life Sentence here:

SATAN “LIFE SENTENCE” – SATAN REIGNS ONCE AGAIN!

Above review posted on August 2, 2013, on Metal Odyssey.

Sinister Realm - World Of Evil - promo cover pic

#9

SINISTER REALM – World Of Evil

Allentown, Pennsylvania’s Sinister Realm are a Metal band that YOU need to be aware of; cause their Metal is in the same class as the 2 above mentioned bands and World Of Evil is a beacon for True Metal.

Read Stone’s review of World Of Evil here:

SINISTER REALM “WORLD OF EVIL” = METAL FANTASTICAL!

Above review posted on August 1, 2013, on Metal Odyssey.

Warbeast - Destroy - promo cover pic

#10

WARBEAST –  Destroy

The legendary (vocalist) Bruce Corbitt fronts WARBEAST; a band with a Texas-sized sound of blazing, furious and brain sizzling Thrash Metal! DESTROY is the second studio album from WARBEAST and its title aptly describes the wholesome goodness of what you’ll hear.

Satyricon - Self-Titled - promo cover pic

#11 (Tie)

SATYRICON – S/T

Yes, Satyricon took a detour and released a diverse album in 2013; only this S/T package of songs STILL delivers a Blackened atmosphere, mood, feel and vibes which are all worthy of making this listener to do exactly that… listen. Rest assured, the Blackened heaviness is here as well.

Skeletonwitch - Serpents Unleashed - promo cover pic

#11 (Tie)

SKELETONWITCH – Serpents Unleashed

These Ohio Blackened Thrash troublemakers aka SKELETOWITCH have done it again; they’ve created another face-ripping Metal album that if played at maximum level, could very well move planet Earth off of its axis and fuck everything up.

Five Finger Death Punch - Wrong Side Of Heaven - Volume 1 - promo coverFive Finger Death Punch - wrong side of heaven volume 2 - promo cover

#12

FIVE FINGER DEATH PUNCH

It’s simple. Five Finger Death Punch released a one-two punch to their fans and most likely recruited 200 million more fans along the way. It’s too difficult to choose Volume 1 or Volume 2, therefore, Metal Odyssey’s staff and I say: It’s a Metal draw! FFDP honestly kicks incredible ass on both albums!

Gorguts - Colored Sands - promo cover pic

#13

GORGUTS – COLORED SANDS

Hail to another Metal comeback in 2013! GORGUTS returned as well and Colored Sands is a Metal triumph! Guitarist and Vocalist Luc Lemay has mystically made Classical Music sound and feel like… Metal. This is a top-tier Death Metal album and band that shall stand the test of time.

Helloween - Straight Out Of Hell - promo cover pic!

#14

HELLOWEEN – Straight Out Of Hell

HELLOWEEN don’t need to keep proving that their the Power Metal kings; still they do once again with Straight Out Of Hell. Released back in January of 2013, this Helloween album even includes superb tributes to the late Jon Lord and Freddie Mercury.

Horlet - The Keys Of Life And Death - promo cover

#15

HORLET – The Keys Of Life And Death

HORLET is an unsigned, DIY Metal band from the grand Metal state of Ohio. HORLET’s The Keys Of Life And Death is a Melodic Death Metal prize. Trust Stone when I say: HORLET is the real Metal deal.

Korn - The Paradigm Shift - promo cover pic - 2013

#20

KORN – The Paradigm Shift

KORN returned with a back to KORN basics Metal sound, while welcoming back Brian “Head” Welch on guitar, on The Paradigm Shift. This album has been a contagious listen for me and is, in my Metal opinion, an album that substantiates why KORN is a world-class Metal band since day one. Metal be thy name.
