Wanna See My DIO “Anthology” CD? It’s Really Cool…

Posted in classic rock, Heavy Metal, Metal, metal music, Music, rock music with tags , , , , on May 31, 2015 by Metal Odyssey

DIO - Anthology - CD front cover - Metal Odyssey - 2015

That’s it above, my DIO Anthology CD! How cool is that? This CD was part of a bundle of used CD’s that I bought for $12 (U.S.), a few months ago. It was a good deal! I was quite happy to finally find this DIO CD, at a local pop culture store I frequent. It doesn’t matter if I already have every song on this Anthology CD; collecting any DIO CD is my Metal goal!

There are 14 songs on Anthology and I commend the person(s) that selected them for this issue; however, I would have selected Rock ‘n’ Roll Children in place of Shoot Shoot. Hungry For Heaven is another DIO classic that is missing on Anthology; still this is a grand compilation of DIO songs.

It’s always difficult choosing my favorite DIO song of all-time. I always go with Holy DiverRainbow In The Dark, The Last In Line and Time To Burn being my core picks. Then again, this is Ronnie James Dio and his songs rule! Forgive me for being bias, I cannot control myself. As I see it, there will never be such powerful Metal songs written like this ever again. Ronnie James Dio and the gifted musicians he had surrounded himself with came together to create timeless Metal magic, in my Metal opinion.

DIO - Anthology - back cover - Metal Odyssey - 2015

Above: back cover of Anthology CD

DIO Anthology was released back in 1997, via (The) Connoisseur Collection. If you don’t own any DIO CDs, pick up Anthology for this is as good as it gets! This CD sells online in used condition for under $5 (U.S.), just about everywhere I’ve looked. Metal Be Thy Name! – Stone

DIO Anthology – Track List:

  1. Holy Driver
  2. Rainbow In The Dark

OMMADON – UK Drone/Doom Duo To Undrape “Empathy For The Wicked” Via Golden Mantra This July

Posted in Metal, metal bands, metal music, Music, rock music with tags , , , on May 30, 2015 by Metal Odyssey

Ommadon - Empathy For The Wicked - promo album cover pic - 2015 - #MO0529

Following the crushing doom of their critically adored, 2014 double LP, V, which earned a spot on Rolling Stone’s 20 Best Metal Albums Of 2014, UK drone/doom duo, OMMADON, continues their perpetual quest to achieve sonic annihilation of the self through unadulterated heaviness with Empathy For The Wicked. Boasting just one earth-rupturing track broken into two parts, Empathy For The Wicked was recorded live, mixed by OMMADON and mastered by recording legend, Billy Anderson (Neurosis, Zoroaster, Eyehategod, Taurus, Brothers Of The Sonic Cloth etc.), who gave it the final crushing touches it deserves.

Where OMMADON‘s previous scores were all recorded in the Highlands of Scotland surrounded by forest, Empathy For The Wicked marks their first release to be recorded on an industrial estate in urban Northumberland surrounded by the dregs of humanity. The first track from Empathy For The Wicked was originally recorded for the cassette split with Horse Latitudes and Coltsblood. During that session, OMMADON decided to continue recording through the night and drone out the riff which became the second side to Empathy For The Wicked.

Empathy For The Wicked will be released on 12″ vinyl via Golden Mantra on July 15th, 2015 with preorders available at: www.goldenmantra.co.uk. Teasers to be unveiled in the coming weeks.

Critical Hails For V:

A hypnotic, dead-eyed combination where patience, misanthropy and endurance collide; a zombie chained to a pole walking the same ugly circle.” – Rolling Stone

“Split across four sides of vinyl, the double record was mastered by Billy Anderson… so you can bet your favourite Sunn O))) picture disc on this thing sounding heavier than a dying planet.” – Terrorizer

SOS - promo band pic - 2015 - #052915MOSOSNYC

New York City’s heavy-hitting groove quartet SOS is celebrating twenty raging years together as a band in 2015, and is currently booking shows across the city throughout June in celebration of crushing right through their two decade mark.

Following the release of their fifth full-length, Strength And Conditioning, SOS performed on the street at the massive NYC Marathon for the fifteenth consecutive year, amidst a widespread rash of other performances. Continuing the live mayhem, the band will play on their home turf on Friday, June 5th with Warrior Soul and a host of other support acts, followed by a free, all-ages, outdoor, matinee show at Tompkins Square Park on June 13th with an assortment of friend acts. June 21st will see SOS hammering Astoria Skate Park in Queens with another free, all-ages, outdoor, matinee show.

Stand by for additional live shows to be confirmed through the Summer months. Issues the band: “The weather’s getting nicer and SOS is stoked to celebrate twenty years of heavy grooves! What better way than with a bunch of kick ass shows with our musical brethren? See ya in June!”

SOS Live Actions:

6/05/2015 Blackthorn 51 – Elmhurst, NY w/ Warrior Soul, Metalfier, Tempest City, Black Dawn, Pyramis, Sweet Magma [info]

6/13/2015 Tompkins Square Park – New York, NY w/ Srotakin IV, Snake Canyon, Purple Pam & The Flesh Eaters, High North, Valence, Fall of The Albatross [info]

6/21/2015 Astoria Skate Park – Queens, NY w/ Jump For The Sails, Lardhand, Off The Turnpike, Paloma Blanco, Phosfate, Sweet Magma, WDFA [info]

SOS frontman Mike SOS recently completed an In The Beginning feature for No Echo on The Scorpions’ Love At First Sting LP right HERE.

Producing a fusion of heavy sounds, SOS is a maniacal musical beast which flails madly yet seamlessly in all directions at once. Their fifth full-length album, Strength And Conditioning is a nearly forty-eight minute excursion into barrier-free musical chaos with heavy melodic grooves, recorded and mixed by Travis Harrison at Serious Business Studios, mastered by Alan Douches at West West Side Music.

Lineup changes and a restructuring of the band, followed by heavy-duty local performances for the past year, has formed a six-year gap between albums; yet the band’s heavy dedication has paid off, as Strength And Conditioning boasts SOS‘ most action-packed mayhem yet. Strength And Conditioning is streaming and available for purchase by the band’s DIY label 316 Productions RIGHT HERE.

AGALLOCH continues to tour in support of their critically adored The Serpent & The Sphere opus, released last year via Profound Lore. Captured by legendary producer/engineer Billy Anderson (Neurosis, Zoroaster, Asunder, Ommadon, Taurus, Brothers Of The Sonic Cloth etc.) at Cloud City Studios in Portland, Oregon (and mixed by Anderson at Everything Hz), the offering includes a guest appearance by guitarist Nathanaël Larochette of Canadian neofolk trio, Musk Ox, and finds the band delivering some of their most forward-thinking and stimulating compositions to date, elevating their progressive musical oeuvre to a challenging new level whilst still maintaining true to their signature sound.

“…their most refined and generous album to date, an elegant trip to unexpected ends.” – Pitchfork

“Whereas their triumphant previous album was painted in dark blues and glittering black, this one comes draped in muted grays and browns, calming earth tones that soothe rather than awe. If Marrow of the Spirit was a storm, The Serpent & The Sphere is the stillness that descends over damp stones and battered branches once the howling winds have quieted.” – Spin

DEMON LUNG – Nevada Doom Bringers Unleash “Mark Of Jubilee” Via Decibel Magazine; “A Dracula” To See Release Next Month

Demon Lung - promo band pic - 2015 - #05DLMO0166

Las Vegas-based doom bringers, DEMON LUNG, will unleash the forlorn fruits of their A Dracula full-length next month via Candlelight Records. Captured by Billy Anderson (Neurosis, Zoroaster, Eyehategod, Taurus, Brothers Of The Sonic Cloth etc.), the record boasts eight dark, devious hymns centered loosely on Juan López Moctezuma’s 1977 horror film, Alucardain which two teenage orphan girls living in a Catholic convent unleash a demonic force and ultimately become possessed by Satan.

Alucarda is a more relatable story for me than our last album’s [The Hundredth Name] subject matter,” vocalist Shanda Fredrick issues, “which made writing a lot more fun this time around. The heroine in this story is the daughter of Satan, who happens to fall in love with the purest of souls in the convent she resides. She coaxed this soul over to the dark, with only intentions of love but in doing so she dooms her to death by the hands of the nuns. The anger consumes her and she uses her dark powers to resurrect her love and together they kill the convent and then the world.”

As a precursor to its official unveiling, today Decibel Magazine offers up sixth movement,Mark Of Jubilee” for public consumption at THIS LOCATION.

Demon Lung - A Dracula - promo album cover pic - 2015 - #052615DLMO

A Dracula comes nearly two years to the date from the successful release of the band’s critically lauded, 2013-released The Hundredth Name. Media applauded the band, especially Fredrick with Decibel Magazine gushing, “She emerges like a high empress, adding real soul to the quintet’s lurch.” Ghost Cult called the debut, “a modern doom masterpiece,” Las Vegas Weekly concurred noting, “Everything about DEMON LUNG‘s debut screams epic,” while New Noise Magazine gushed, “This record is mammoth. Bass riffs tuned low drag the listener into a dark, solemn swamp of evil. The atmosphere created is as important as each note plucked from Lucifer’s hairy hind quarters.” Added This Is Not A Scene accurately, “The future of doom seems to be in safe hands.”

DEMON LUNG is vocalist Shanda Fredrick, drummer Jeremy Brenton, guitarists Phil Burns and Brent Lynch and bassist Jason Lamb. A Dracula will be released via Candlelight Records on June 16th, 2015 with tour dates to be announced shortly. In the meantime, preorders are available at THIS LOCATION. Neurosis - promo band pic - 2015 - #052715MON

As their thirtieth anniversary nears, NEUROSIS will be hitting the road in their most extensive touring of the North American continent in over fifteen years this Summer, the announcement falling as the dust still settles on Baltimore following their crushing performance at this year’s Maryland Deathfest.

Not since prior to the turn of the millennium has the mighty NEUROSIS embarked on a tour of this size, as this week the band confirms more than a dozen new tour dates between the end of July and the middle of August throughout the Midwestern, East Coast, and Southern US states and the lower Eastern portion of Canada. Besides the extensive nature of the tour, they will also be playing in cities and states which they have not visited since the ’90s.

For this widespread endeavor, NEUROSIS will bring an array of excellent acts to the stage with them, including support from labelmates Brothers Of The Sonic Cloth, featuring Tad Doyle, for the entire trek, as well as eight shows with nomadic doomsday cult, The Body, five dates with expansive rock duo, Sumac (members of Baptists, Old Man Gloom, ex-Isis, etc.), and one show each with Pinkish Black and labelmates Iron Tongue. This all comes in addition to NEUROSIS’ previously announced inclusion in the massive, three-day Heavy Montréal Festival consuming August 7th – 9th, where the band will perform the opening night with the likes of Mastodon, Meshuggah, Gorguts, Arch Enemy and many others.

Tickets for the impending NEUROSIS tour will go on sale for all shows this Friday, May 29th.

________________________

As their ongoing legacy nears its thirty-year mark, NEUROSIS has become an institution of heavy music. From their beginnings as a hardcore punk band in the mid-’80s to their gradual evolution into a transcendent and genre-defying collective, the Oakland, California natives have broken ground at every turn, pioneering a sound that influenced heavyweights including Isis, Mastodon and High On Fire and inspiring endless legions of fans with their expansive, mind-altering works.

In 2012, NEUROSIS released one of their most ambitious albums to date, with Honor Found In Decay, cultivated through their own Neurot Recordings. Recorded by Steve Albini at Electrical Audio and mastered by John Golden of Golden Mastering, the album showcased the band taking their esoteric but leveling and categorization-free style of extreme music to even diverse areas of exploration.

Following the record release show, the outfit disbanded with the longtime visuals that had accompanied their live set nearly since inception, empowering their anthems in a drastically more human approach. Since the album’s release, NEUROSIS has been more active tour-wise than they have since before the turn of the millennium, and seemingly shows no time of ending the campaign any time soon.

POISON IDEA – Declares Indefinite Hiatus; Cancels Upcoming Tour Dates

Posted in hardcore, hardcore bands, Music, punk, rock music with tags , , , on May 28, 2015 by Metal Odyssey

Poison Idea - promo band pic - 2015 - #052715PIMO

Upon returning from their successful European Tour which consumed the past several weeks, POISON IDEA has returned home and announced that the band is going on hiatus for an undetermined amount of time. The band has issued that they need to address some health issues and personal matters, and all upcoming shows for the indeterminable future have been cancelled or postponed. Additional details on the band’s future plans will be announced at a later date.

Portland, Oregon’s undisputed kings of punk, POISON IDEA released their critically acclaimed Confuse & Conquer LP through Southern Lord Recordings in April of this year. Setting everything in its path ablaze with the energetic pummeling assault the band has assaulted the planet with for three-and-a-half decades, and by incorporating the use of epic piano segues, the album is an instant classic for all POISON IDEA fans as well as one of the most undeniably important releases in the punk/hardcore realms this year.

The band’s first new album since 2006’s Latest Will And Testament, and first since the passing of their great friend and guitarist, the iconic Tom “Pig Champion” Roberts, Confuse & Conquer boasts thirty-five minutes of thundering, infectious rage recorded in the band’s hometown by Joel Grind (Toxic Holocaust) and mastered by Brad Boatright (From Ashes Rise) at Audiosiege, and proves that absolutely nothing can stop this legendary act and all attempts are a futile waste of time.

Confuse & Conquer LP is available on colored 12″ vinyl and CD including shirt and vinyl bundles HERE, and the album is streaming in full and available for digital purchase HERE.

Poison Idea - Confuse & Conquer - promo album cover pic - 2015 - #052715PIMO

Formed in 1980, POISON IDEA became a household name in the hardcore/punk scenes early in their career, and are known as one of the most notoriously in-your-face acts in the American musical underworld, with an enraged, high-energy live set even more rambunctious than the massive roster of singles, EPs, full-length studio and live releases and more, across a realm of labels including Pusmort, Alchemy, American Leather, Bitzcore, Tim/Kerr, Taang!, Farewell, TKO, Southern Lord, Candlelight, and their own Fatal Erection.

They’ve been an incredibly influential act to major performers including Nirvana, Pantera, Napalm Death, Machine Head, Eyehategod, Emperor, Turbonegro and an endless list of others. Soaking up respect from generations of hardcore punks and dishing none out, the dastardly denizens of mid-paced punk shred are in trademark form on Confuse & Conquer.

POISON IDEA‘s new masterpiece proves itself both identifiable and rewarding to listeners who have encountered them at any point from their 1980 birth onwards. Their forceful hardcore pummel is underwritten with dark humor, rage, disdain, and moments of real melancholy well beyond the usual remit of the genre, but it’s to be expected of Portland’s nihilistic champions, proudly unaligned with any other sound out there.

About Masaki Murashita:

Masaki Murashita first showed his scorching riffs and powerful songwriting, along with his blistering and aggressive vocal style with the critically acclaimed modern thrash band Hemoptysis.

Combining elements of melody, thrash and modern extreme metal, Masaki molded his own razor-sharp brand of metal that has left audiences and critics alike awestruck and demanding more.

Not content to rest on his already impressive work with Hemoptysis, Masaki is in the process of writing and producing his first solo album. He is pushing his songwriting, musicianship and incendiary metal style to a new level.

Masaki will be joined in his new project with several other well-respected musicians in the metal scene, proving that he can stand with the best metal players in the industry and hold his own with his unique brand of sonic aggression.

Masaki’s Endorsements: ESP Guitars, Engl Amps, EMG Pickups, Providence cables, straps and effects, Morley pedals, ISP Technologies, Voodoo Lab, InTune Guitar Picks and SIT Strings.

KING HEAVY – To Release Self-Titled Debut On Cruz Del Sur Music In September

Posted in doom metal, Metal, metal music, Music, rock music with tags , , , , on May 27, 2015 by Metal Odyssey

King Heavy - Promo live band pic - 2015 - 052715MOKHDM1

Chilean / Belgian band KING HEAVY is set to release its self-titled debut full length on Cruz Del Sur Music on September 4th in Europe and September 19th in the U.S.

KING HEAVY is anything but the typical brand of mono-dimensional, superficial doom metal. KING HEAVY rocks! Aside from strong elements of CANDLEMASS and of the more traditional doom metal sound, KING HEAVY offers epic arrangements and a twisted touch that reminds of BLACK SABBATH’s Born Again, CELTIC FROST’s Into the Pandemonium and the early, darkest side of DANZIG

The album contains seven songs for a total running time of over 47 minutes and was engineered, mixed and mastered by Pablo Clares at DM6 Studio, Chile;  vocals were recorded by Peter Maene at Creative Factory, Belgium.

Shortly after the release of the album, the band will engage an European tour which will bring them to Malta’s Doom Fest, Dutch Doom Days, Biebob (the notorious Belgian metal club)… Other tour dates will be published and confirmed very soon!

KING HEAVY was formed in 2009 by ex-Procession founder Daniel Perez Saa and Luce Vee, known for being the vocalist of Dutch Doom Metal act Hooded Priest. Shortly thereafter guitarist Matias Aguirre and drummer Miguel Canessa were added to the line up and in 2014 the band self-released an EP entitled Horror Absoluto, which was later repressed on split-vinyl by French label Emanes Records.

Track List:

La Gárgola
Life A.D.
As Dawn Broke On The Day
Thirteen Chosen Ones
Wounds
The Crowning
He Who Spoke In Tongues

About AGGRESSION:

Formed in 1985 under the original moniker “Asylum” to be later changed to AGGRESSION, the speed metallers unleashed their 1986 demo “Forgotten Skeleton”, (which saw an album release in 2005) and their debut full length “The Full Treatment” in 1987, which lead them to become one of the most popular bands to rise out of the Quebec and Canadian metal scene. With their manager at the time (Johnny Hart), AGGRESSION quickly became a household name with their concerts sold out everywhere and a fan base that grew from hundreds to thousands in no time.

Other bands such as Metallica, Slayer, Exodus, Hallow’s Eve, Destruction and others all wanted to see the beast for themselves during tour stops in Montreal. Playing numerous concerts with bands such as Anvil, Celtic Frost, Voïvod, Nuclear Assault, Agnostic Front, D.R.I., Possessed, Dark Angel, Crumbsuckers, Sacrifice and others, AGGRESSION decided to call it quits in 1989 due to external influences.
