Cro-Mags And Ringworm Concert Photo Gallery And Review – From Madison Live! In Covington, Kentucky, March 17, 2023

I went with my buddy Troy to see Cro-Mags and Ringworm, down in Covington Kentucky, at Madison Live!, on March 17, 2023. Both of these bands have been on my bucket list for many years. Suffice to say I had an amazing time seeing and hearing these bands, up close!

The line-up for Cro-Mags has changed over the years; however, the legendary band founder Harley Flanagan has once again proved to his fans he is still at his very best in performing live. With a mixed crowd of both younger and older fans, the Hardcore stage diving and insane pit of yesteryear was non-existent; save for a pit that was more congenial than over aggressive.

Two or three scuffles broke out in the crowd and Harley Flanagan was very quick to diffuse the scuffles. Harley made it clear his lack of tolerance for fighting. Harley also let his feelings be known for unity, brotherhood and being grateful for your loved ones. I couldn’t agree more. There were parents that took their little kids to this show. As for the music, I couldn’t stop moving; with my cane and screwed up knees. We’ve all gotten older and Harley doesn’t need to prove anything to anyone. He’s forever immortalized in Metal and Hardcore history.

Cleveland Ohio’s Ringworm didn’t hold back nothing. They blazed and thundered through their set of songs like killer hornets. Human Furnace led his band like the Metal titan he is, vocally menacing. Opening for Cro-Mags, Ringworm set the Metal vibe on course. I always have more energy in the first half of any concert; thus I went into the pit with my cane and enjoyed every second of it. My fellow Metal brethren joined me in the pit, to cheer me on and make certain I didn’t fall down. It was more a nostalgic ceremony of yesteryear than anything else. I was so grateful to the brother/sisterhood that graciously joined me in celebration. My knees hurt so bad out there and the love and support I received from that Metal gathering brought me close to tears. I’ll never forget that night. God Bless them all and both bands. – Stone

Stream KRUELTY’s Untopia HERE.

Untopia, the second LP from Tokyo, Japan’s brutalizing metallic hardcore quintet KRUELTY, is now streaming in its entirety on the eve of its worldwide release through Profound Lore Records.

Formed in Tokyo in the summer of 2017, KRUELTY has emerged as the most notable artist to find that sweet spot where heavy beatdown hardcore and ‘90s American/Scandinavian death/doom metal meet. This devastating amalgamation becomes the blueprint of brutality and slam the band unleashes. With KRUELTY, you will hear the ultimate convergence of some of the most punishing death metal riffs and the most mind-blowing breakdowns influenced by Japanese and ‘90s East Coast hardcore bands.

2020 saw the release of KRUELTY’s debut album A Dying Truth and revealed itself as one of the heaviest albums that year. With their second LP, Untopia, the band will release an album even more massive in scope and ultimately heavier than their debut. The bulldozing seven-song record was produced by Taylor Young at The Pit Studios (Nails, Xibalba, Section H8) while the band was touring in the US earlier this year, mastered by Brad Boatright at Audiosiege (Obituary, Terminal Nation, Mindforce), and features artwork by Norwegian artist Sindre Foss Skancke.

Endure KRUELTY’s entire Untopia LP now at YouTube RIGHT HERE.

Untopia will see release through Profound Lore tomorrow, Friday, March 17th, on LP, CD, CS, and digital formats. Find preorders HERE and watch the “Harder Than Before” video HERE.

KRUELTY continues touring across the planet in support of Untopia. Having just completed tours of New Zealand and Australia, KRUELTY will now crush through their home country this week for ten dates on the Untopia Japan Tour, running from March 17th through April 2nd. Formed in 2016 by guitarist Tyler Harper and drummer Jeremy Randazzo, the initial idea for CAPRA was to create something that would be fresh while still giving listeners a sense of nostalgia for the sounds of the late ’90s and early 2000s hardcore and punk scenes. Following various lineup changes, and adding Crow Lotus (vocals) and Trevor Alleman (bass) to their ranks, everything came together.

The band’s most recent full-length, In Transmission (2021) — recorded with Jai Benoit (Golgothan, Father Rust), then mixed by Taylor Young (Nails, Twitching Tongues), and mastered by Brad Boatwright (Pig Destroyer, Integrity, Torche, Idle Hands) — represents the culmination of years of hard work, reflecting everything they’ve been writing and pouring into the band since solidifying the lineup.

The band is currently putting the finishing touches on new material with details to be unveiled in the weeks to come. In the meantime, preview and purchase In Transmission at THIS LOCATION.

NIHILIST DEATH CULT’s (members ex-Pestilence, Abyss, Tribe of Pazuzu, Soulstorm) Release Video For “Obey & Consume” Off Debut “Death To All Tyrants”

Posted in hardcore, hardcore bands, hardcore metal, hardcore punk, Metal, Music, music news, music videos, news with tags , , , , , , , , on December 14, 2022 by Metal Odyssey

Hailing from Toronto, Canada, Nihilist Death Cult has recently released its debut album“Death To All Tyrants”. They are now releasing a video for the track “Obey & Consume”, which is about just following blindly and not questioning anything, and being a good consumer. The time to fight is always now, not later and it was inspired by John Carpenter’s “They Live”.

The video can be seen and heard via its premiere on NoCleanSinging HERE.

The album “Death To All Tyrants” is in-your-face punk rock that combines angry riffs and hate-fuel lyrics about how the corporate-sponsored news media feeds you the stories and ideas they are paid to push. This record is about the victims standing up to the tyrants, it’s about choosing your own path and not blindly following norms if they don’t suit you. Bassist/vocalist Nick Sagias writes most of the music, but takes in input from his brother, drummer John Sagias and guitarist Ethan Bolduc. He shares their writing process:

“When I started writing for NDC, I knew that I wanted it to be aggressive, relentless, savage, no breakdowns, short songs, angry hardcore punk, the fact that my brother’s drumming fit perfectly in that and he was into it was a bonus for this otherwise it probably never would have happened. We just wanted to do this relentless style that we love and miss. Poison Idea, early DRI, early Bad Brains, the early dbeat bands, Discharge and GBH, that stuff gets the blood pumping and that’s the kinda stuff we wanna hear and see live.”

Those that get to witness Nihilist Death Cult play live can expect seasoned veterans going up on stage and putting on a show to match the energy of the music. There are no shoegazers here, just three passionate guys that want people to get into their music. They may be from Toronto but they are not a typical attitude Toronto band, they are the antithesis of that attitude.

The relatable lyrics are well enunciated making each of the nine songs on the album easy to pick up and get into. Nihilist Death Cult is recommended for fans of early DRI, early Bad Brains, and Nails.

The album was released on December 2, 2022 and is available at https://nihilistdeathcult.bandcamp.com

Chicago hardcore unit HARM’S WAY have announced a trio of live dates. On December 16th, the band will play a headlining show at The X Bar in Cupertino, California. The following night, the band will appear at The Belasco Theater in Los Angeles, California for day one of the two-day For The Children Toy Drive – an annual event that collects toys to be distributed to those in need – where they’ll play alongside Rotting Out, Drain, King Nine, Koyo, Fuming Mouth, and more.

In February, the band will take part in the inaugural HeartSupport Festival in Orlando, Florida. Launched by August Burns Red frontman Jake Luhrs to benefit his HeartSupport non-profit foundation, HARM’S WAY will perform on day two of the two-day fest alongside Rise Against, The Ghost Inside, Spiritbox, and many others. Tickets are on sale now. See all confirmed dates below.

HARM’S WAY:
12/16/2022 The X Bar – Cupertino, CA [tickets]
12/17/2022 For The Children Toy Drive @ The Belasco Theater – Los Angeles, CA [tickets]
2/19/2023 HeartSupport Festival @ Central Florida Fairgrounds – Orlando, FL [tickets]

HARM’S WAY’s most recent full-length, Posthuman, was released on Metal Blade Records in 2018. Having grown with each subsequent release, Posthuman was a devastating addition to HARM’S WAY‘s catalog. In 2019, HARM’S WAY released a remix EP of Posthuman titled PSTHMN, a record the band called, “the evolutionary counterpart to our 2018 full-length, Posthuman.” PSTHMN includes four remixed and reinterpreted tracks by artists that have continually inspired and influenced the band throughout its tenure.

Founded in 1982, AGNOSTIC FRONT stands among the most esteemed pioneers of the hardcore genre. No band comes close in sonic and socio authenticity and sincerity where the struggles of survival on the streets have quite literally given life to a sound that remains as impactful today as it was over four decades ago. AGNOSTIC FRONT’s battering, socially critical sounds serve as the foundation of true New York Hardcore and helped initiate the emergence of crossover thrash. The group disbanded briefly in the early ‘90s but returned in 1998 with the crushing sounds of Something’s Gotta Give. Following a slew of pummeling offerings, the band, led by the inimitable roar of Roger Miret and Vinnie Stigma’s legendary charismatic guitar playing, released their critically lauded twelfth album Get Loud! in 2019, which, with its unapologetically honest lyrics and signature aggression, makes clear the band’s penchant to persevere.

Order AGNOSTIC FRONT‘s Get Loud! and more from the Atomic Fire Records webshop HERE.

Watch the band’s previously released videos for “Spray Painted Walls,” “I Remember,” “Conquer And Divide,” “Urban Decay” and more at THIS LOCATION.

POISON IDEA – Declares Indefinite Hiatus; Cancels Upcoming Tour Dates

Posted in hardcore, hardcore bands, Music, punk, rock music with tags , , , on May 28, 2015 by Metal Odyssey

Poison Idea - promo band pic - 2015 - #052715PIMO

Upon returning from their successful European Tour which consumed the past several weeks, POISON IDEA has returned home and announced that the band is going on hiatus for an undetermined amount of time. The band has issued that they need to address some health issues and personal matters, and all upcoming shows for the indeterminable future have been cancelled or postponed. Additional details on the band’s future plans will be announced at a later date.

Portland, Oregon’s undisputed kings of punk, POISON IDEA released their critically acclaimed Confuse & Conquer LP through Southern Lord Recordings in April of this year. Setting everything in its path ablaze with the energetic pummeling assault the band has assaulted the planet with for three-and-a-half decades, and by incorporating the use of epic piano segues, the album is an instant classic for all POISON IDEA fans as well as one of the most undeniably important releases in the punk/hardcore realms this year.

The band’s first new album since 2006’s Latest Will And Testament, and first since the passing of their great friend and guitarist, the iconic Tom “Pig Champion” Roberts, Confuse & Conquer boasts thirty-five minutes of thundering, infectious rage recorded in the band’s hometown by Joel Grind (Toxic Holocaust) and mastered by Brad Boatright (From Ashes Rise) at Audiosiege, and proves that absolutely nothing can stop this legendary act and all attempts are a futile waste of time.

Confuse & Conquer LP is available on colored 12″ vinyl and CD including shirt and vinyl bundles HERE, and the album is streaming in full and available for digital purchase HERE.

Poison Idea - Confuse & Conquer - promo album cover pic - 2015 - #052715PIMO

Formed in 1980, POISON IDEA became a household name in the hardcore/punk scenes early in their career, and are known as one of the most notoriously in-your-face acts in the American musical underworld, with an enraged, high-energy live set even more rambunctious than the massive roster of singles, EPs, full-length studio and live releases and more, across a realm of labels including Pusmort, Alchemy, American Leather, Bitzcore, Tim/Kerr, Taang!, Farewell, TKO, Southern Lord, Candlelight, and their own Fatal Erection.

They’ve been an incredibly influential act to major performers including Nirvana, Pantera, Napalm Death, Machine Head, Eyehategod, Emperor, Turbonegro and an endless list of others. Soaking up respect from generations of hardcore punks and dishing none out, the dastardly denizens of mid-paced punk shred are in trademark form on Confuse & Conquer.

POISON IDEA‘s new masterpiece proves itself both identifiable and rewarding to listeners who have encountered them at any point from their 1980 birth onwards. Their forceful hardcore pummel is underwritten with dark humor, rage, disdain, and moments of real melancholy well beyond the usual remit of the genre, but it’s to be expected of Portland’s nihilistic champions, proudly unaligned with any other sound out there.

SOCIETY SUCKER – Deploys “Sentenced” From Self-Titled EP Through American Aftermath

Society Sucker - EP - promo cover pic - 2014

Just days before their self-titled 7″ hits the streets via Get This Right Records, Wilmington, North Carolina Hardcore outfit, SOCIETY SUCKER, deploys the EP’s bruising opening track.

Now playing at American Aftermath, “Sentenced” sets the pace for the thunderous five-track attack this fairly new but completely significant acts dishes out on the Society Sucker EP. States the site alongside the exclusive track premiere, “Society Sucker are out to decimate reality and crush all of your hopes and dreams. Taking cues from our Hardcore forefathers but staying as relevant as Trapped Under Ice and Suburban Scum, this band is definitely going to make waves…”

Reign fists upon your enemies to “Sentenced” playing at THIS LOCATION.

The EP’s “Repeat Offender” is also playing HERE.

Officially out on September 16th, Society Sucker will be available on four different color variations – one for the preorder (seafoam green), one for record release (seafoam green), one for the gold/yellow version and 1 for the black version – and together they form one larger image. Society Sucker - publicity band pic - 2014 - #55257

Having quickly surged to the forefront of the quickly growing North Carolina hardcore scene since forming in the Summer of 2013, SOCIETY SUCKER takes lessons from classic bands like Subzero, Next Step Up and Merauder. Having recently hooked up with Get This Right Records for the unleashing of their first official release, the self-titled EP’s five enraged tracks are loaded with more brutal hooks than a fleet of whalers. Recorded in February of this year at The Skylight Studio with Vince Ratti and mastered by Brad Boatright at Audiosiege.

The band has performed heavily regionally along the East Coast with an extensive list of local and international touring acts and is now booking shows in support of the new EP. A record release show for the 7″ was held on September 13th. SOCIETY SUCKER is a band committed to keeping Hardcore hard. This is the proof.

Southern Lord reveals the latest addition to their raging Summer schedule; enter progressive hardcore band GUST, hailing from Trollhättan, Sweden.

The fierce four piece skillfully combines pounding d-beat rhythms with a classic hardcore punk directness, and bring forth a maelstrom of metallic riffs, amalgamating into a brutal and arresting sonic assault fans of Cursed and Rise And Fall will swarm to. With one demo, one LP and four European tours already under their belt, and with a fifth tour running from June 24th through July 17th, GUST will release their brand new, self-titled album through Southern Lord Recordings this August. This second LP was self recorded at Fvck Life Studios, and mastered by Brad Boatright (Warcry, From Ashes Rise, Deathreat, Audiosiege Engineering), who supplies guest vocals on the track “Humility In Disguise.”

GUST’s incoming ten-track LP explodes with lyrical angst and musical fury from the get-go, bombarding the listener with catchy riffs and spot-on political statements. From this second LP, it is clear that GUST is a force with which to be reckoned.

RUN WITH THE HUNTED – New Full-Length From Arizona Punk/Hardcore Unit Streaming In Its Entirety; Preorders Available

Run With The Hunted - promo live band pic - 2014 - #9977

With the official detonation of their forthcoming new full-length, The Sieve And The Sand, now less than a week away, Arizona punk/hardcore unit, RUN WITH THE HUNTED, offers rambunctious ears a chance to hear the record in its entirety!

A name derived from classic dystopian novel Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury, The Sieve And The Sand serves as the follow-up to the band’s 2011 self-titled full-length, which Punknews fittingly commended for its “heavy, lurching mosh parts.” Engineered and mixed by Alex Estrada (Touche Amore, Nails, Joyce Manor) and mastered by New Alliance East (Converge, Dropdead, Doomriders), RUN WITH THE HUNTED defies genre norms, sporting a maturity seldom realized in hardcore, seamlessly weaving in and out of multiple genres while maintaining the constant sense of urgency and desperation for which they are known. The result is a seven-track monolithic offering fit for The Secret, Champion and Burning Love enthusiasts, encompassing a lifetime of pain, struggle and a desperate search for meaning and purpose in an otherwise careless world.

Metal Insider notes, “The band’s fourth album… should make fans of Every Time I Die or Converge feel right at home with their wild energy bound together by a focus on tight playing, knowing exactly when to lash out and when to remain poised” while American Aftermath boasts in a 9/10 review, “RUN WITH THE HUNTED have written their best record yet, plain and simple. The Sieve And The Sand is an intelligent, yet chaotic excursion lined with existential musings. Basically, do not sleep on this band.”

Harley’s War Continues… New York Hardcore Legend HARLEY FLANAGAN Recording New LP For Southern Lord

Harley Flanagan - promo pic - 2014 - #03056

New York Hardcore icon, HARLEY FLANAGAN, is currently in the process of recording his newest LP, to be released on Southern Lord later this year.

With his musical roots tracing back to the beginning of the 1980s, FLANAGAN was involved in NYC punk act, The Stimulators, before even hitting his teens. In the mid-’80s he founded the legendary hardcore/crossover act, The Cro-Mags, directly after which the band releasing their seminal Age Of Quarrel LP. At the beginning of the millennium, the artist formed his own HARLEY’S WAR and released their debut album, Cro-Mag, in 2002.

FLANAGAN and several other players recently started laying down the basic tracks for the impending yet-to-be-named album, which will close the extensive twelve-year gap since the band’s initial works were released, and will undoubtedly be one of the premiere hardcore/punk releases of the year.

Issued FLANAGAN on signing with Southern Lord and the ongoing recording process of the new material: “I think that this is some of the hardest stuff I have written in a long time. God knows there has been a lot of inspiration over the last few years.” Southern Lord owner Greg Anderson this week stated on the upcoming release: “The demos we have heard thus far are incredible! We’re really looking forward to hearing this when it’s completed.”

FLANAGAN is a black belt under Renzo Gracie and teaches at the Renzo Gracie academy in NYC, as well as having a book and several other projects in the works.

Italian Grind/Hatecore Gods CRIPPLE BASTARDS Confirmed For Obscene Extreme

Posted in grindcore, hardcore, hardcore bands, metal music, music news, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , , on April 14, 2014 by Metal Odyssey

Cripple Bastards - promo live band pic - band logo - 2014 - #030550

You could say this is a ‘grindcore hat-trick’ as it is the third OEF appearance in 2014 for Italian hate mob Cripple Bastards after headlining the insane Obscene Extreme Asia in Tokyo and Obscene Extreme Australia in Melbourne earlier this year. But if you really want to see the Bastards play at home, then Obscene Extreme Trutnov is the grounds for the final massacre. They have been blasting the shit on stage since the festival’s birth back in 1999 and raised the most infernal stage diving pits for countless times through the years that followed.

26 years after their conception Cripple Bastards still hold the banner high as Italy’s most hostile and aggressive grind/hardcore unit around. With one foot firmly in the past and all the vicious savagery of manic fast 80’s hardcore extremity, Cripple Bastards are also charging forwards. With bloodshot eyes and a rabid ‘get out and bite them’ attitude, this band are ready to introduce their brand new 2014 full length ‘Nero In Metastasi’ on Relapse Records and they will consolidate their ongoing mission of bringing nihilistic, fuck-you-all, grinding hatred to every corner of an underserving mankind.

Cripple Bastards will also be introducing for the first time ever on Trutnov’s Battlefield their 5 piece line-up with new axeman Wild Vitto on second guitar which will only enhance their wall of hate/grind fury!

Listen to ‘Malato Terminale’ taken from the ‘Nero In Metastasi’ album!

EMPIRE OF RATS – S/T Debut From Columbus Ohio’s Hardcore Band Is: Stone’s METAL Pick Of The Day!

4 Metal Fists Out Of 5!

Metalfistredbckgrndsmall4

EMPIRE OF RATS – The self-titled debut album from Columbus Ohio’s Empire Of Rats was released back on October 31st, 2013, via A389 Recordings. This Hardcore group has taken their inner disgust for society’s status quo, annoying antagonists and whatever else pisses them off, funneling it all into fuel for a freaking impressive debut for (what’s left of) my eardrums. Empire Of Rats don’t screw around with their sonic brutality. If its legit, underground Hardcore that you crave, Empire Of Rats serves it up with ferocity. It’s that easy to explain.

Everything about this debut is pummeling, with the exception of the 1:05 intro to Early Mourning, which boasts a calming acoustic guitar number before succumbing to a mid-tempo (all band) Metal instrumental; an instrumental that reminds me of Metallica’s Ride The Lightning days. Overall, the vocals, musicianship, energy and rage on this album are what diehard Hardcore fans yearn for and I highly endorse Empire Of Rats. Metal be thy name. – Stone

DROPDEAD – Providence Activists Dispatch Duo Of Joint EPs Via Armageddon Label

Posted in hardcore bands, hardcore punk, Music, news, rock music, rock music news, world news with tags , , , , on February 13, 2014 by Metal Odyssey

Dropdead - band logo - b&w - 2014 - banner

Longtime political hardcore/punk activists, DROPDEAD, have just released two brand new EPs via their own Armageddon Label, both of them split releases; one with RUIDOSA INMUNDICIA and the other with SYSTEMATIC DEATH.

Since 1991, Providence, Rhode Island’s DROPDEAD has protested humankind’s attrition towards the environment and its inhabitants, including each other, along the way amassing an impressive arsenal of fully independent releases, including several full-length studio and live LPs, and split releases with Crossed Out, Rupture, Totalitär, Unholy Grave, Suppression, Converge and others.

Having toured internationally, razing clubs, squats and basements on multiple continents for two decades, the band has been a major East Coast US contributor to inspiring entire new generations of extreme music fans to rise up against tyranny and injustice at maximum speed and aggression through their “fucking assholes don’t get it” credo. DROPDEAD‘s latest audio collapses come in the form of two new 7″ vinyl split releases with a pair of high-potency international acts.

One of these brutal head-to-head platters is with Vienna, Austria’s punk shredders, RUIDOSA INMUNDICIA, the female-fronted outfit raging in the riotous vein of Antischism, Capitalist Casualties, Los Crudos and Hellnation. The split leads with “A Fall Of Empires” and “Last Breath” from DROPDEAD on the A-side, and counters with “Donde Esta La Solucion,” “Asco” and “Blanco Y Negro” from RUIDOSA INMUNDICIA on the B-side.

The second new output comes in the form of theFighting For Life 7″ split with longtime Japanese punk/hardcore outfit, SYSTEMATIC DEATH. In existence since 1983 this outfit spews forth rabid political hardcore along the lines of Gauze, S.O.B.,Infest, GISM and Lärm, and here overthrows the B-side of the split with the tracks “Suji” and “Dashing,” while DROPDEAD overloads side A with their newest attacks in the form of “Foundation” and “The Final Chapter.”

Both splits are available now at THIS LOCATION.
