I went with my buddy Troy to see Cro-Mags and Ringworm, down in Covington Kentucky, at Madison Live!, on March 17, 2023. Both of these bands have been on my bucket list for many years. Suffice to say I had an amazing time seeing and hearing these bands, up close!

The line-up for Cro-Mags has changed over the years; however, the legendary band founder Harley Flanagan has once again proved to his fans he is still at his very best in performing live. With a mixed crowd of both younger and older fans, the Hardcore stage diving and insane pit of yesteryear was non-existent; save for a pit that was more congenial than over aggressive.

Two or three scuffles broke out in the crowd and Harley Flanagan was very quick to diffuse the scuffles. Harley made it clear his lack of tolerance for fighting. Harley also let his feelings be known for unity, brotherhood and being grateful for your loved ones. I couldn’t agree more. There were parents that took their little kids to this show. As for the music, I couldn’t stop moving; with my cane and screwed up knees. We’ve all gotten older and Harley doesn’t need to prove anything to anyone. He’s forever immortalized in Metal and Hardcore history.

Cleveland Ohio’s Ringworm didn’t hold back nothing. They blazed and thundered through their set of songs like killer hornets. Human Furnace led his band like the Metal titan he is, vocally menacing. Opening for Cro-Mags, Ringworm set the Metal vibe on course. I always have more energy in the first half of any concert; thus I went into the pit with my cane and enjoyed every second of it. My fellow Metal brethren joined me in the pit, to cheer me on and make certain I didn’t fall down. It was more a nostalgic ceremony of yesteryear than anything else. I was so grateful to the brother/sisterhood that graciously joined me in celebration. My knees hurt so bad out there and the love and support I received from that Metal gathering brought me close to tears. I’ll never forget that night. God Bless them all and both bands. – Stone

Stream KRUELTY’s Untopia HERE.

Untopia, the second LP from Tokyo, Japan’s brutalizing metallic hardcore quintet KRUELTY, is now streaming in its entirety on the eve of its worldwide release through Profound Lore Records.

Formed in Tokyo in the summer of 2017, KRUELTY has emerged as the most notable artist to find that sweet spot where heavy beatdown hardcore and ‘90s American/Scandinavian death/doom metal meet. This devastating amalgamation becomes the blueprint of brutality and slam the band unleashes. With KRUELTY, you will hear the ultimate convergence of some of the most punishing death metal riffs and the most mind-blowing breakdowns influenced by Japanese and ‘90s East Coast hardcore bands.

2020 saw the release of KRUELTY’s debut album A Dying Truth and revealed itself as one of the heaviest albums that year. With their second LP, Untopia, the band will release an album even more massive in scope and ultimately heavier than their debut. The bulldozing seven-song record was produced by Taylor Young at The Pit Studios (Nails, Xibalba, Section H8) while the band was touring in the US earlier this year, mastered by Brad Boatright at Audiosiege (Obituary, Terminal Nation, Mindforce), and features artwork by Norwegian artist Sindre Foss Skancke.

Endure KRUELTY’s entire Untopia LP now at YouTube RIGHT HERE.

Untopia will see release through Profound Lore tomorrow, Friday, March 17th, on LP, CD, CS, and digital formats. Find preorders HERE and watch the “Harder Than Before” video HERE.

KRUELTY continues touring across the planet in support of Untopia. Having just completed tours of New Zealand and Australia, KRUELTY will now crush through their home country this week for ten dates on the Untopia Japan Tour, running from March 17th through April 2nd. Formed in 2016 by guitarist Tyler Harper and drummer Jeremy Randazzo, the initial idea for CAPRA was to create something that would be fresh while still giving listeners a sense of nostalgia for the sounds of the late ’90s and early 2000s hardcore and punk scenes. Following various lineup changes, and adding Crow Lotus (vocals) and Trevor Alleman (bass) to their ranks, everything came together.

The band’s most recent full-length, In Transmission (2021) — recorded with Jai Benoit (Golgothan, Father Rust), then mixed by Taylor Young (Nails, Twitching Tongues), and mastered by Brad Boatwright (Pig Destroyer, Integrity, Torche, Idle Hands) — represents the culmination of years of hard work, reflecting everything they’ve been writing and pouring into the band since solidifying the lineup.

The band is currently putting the finishing touches on new material with details to be unveiled in the weeks to come. In the meantime, preview and purchase In Transmission at THIS LOCATION.

NIHILIST DEATH CULT’s (members ex-Pestilence, Abyss, Tribe of Pazuzu, Soulstorm) Release Video For “Obey & Consume” Off Debut “Death To All Tyrants”

Posted in hardcore, hardcore bands, hardcore metal, hardcore punk, Metal, Music, music news, music videos, news with tags , , , , , , , , on December 14, 2022 by Metal Odyssey

Hailing from Toronto, Canada, Nihilist Death Cult has recently released its debut album“Death To All Tyrants”. They are now releasing a video for the track “Obey & Consume”, which is about just following blindly and not questioning anything, and being a good consumer. The time to fight is always now, not later and it was inspired by John Carpenter’s “They Live”.

The video can be seen and heard via its premiere on NoCleanSinging HERE.

The album “Death To All Tyrants” is in-your-face punk rock that combines angry riffs and hate-fuel lyrics about how the corporate-sponsored news media feeds you the stories and ideas they are paid to push. This record is about the victims standing up to the tyrants, it’s about choosing your own path and not blindly following norms if they don’t suit you. Bassist/vocalist Nick Sagias writes most of the music, but takes in input from his brother, drummer John Sagias and guitarist Ethan Bolduc. He shares their writing process:

“When I started writing for NDC, I knew that I wanted it to be aggressive, relentless, savage, no breakdowns, short songs, angry hardcore punk, the fact that my brother’s drumming fit perfectly in that and he was into it was a bonus for this otherwise it probably never would have happened. We just wanted to do this relentless style that we love and miss. Poison Idea, early DRI, early Bad Brains, the early dbeat bands, Discharge and GBH, that stuff gets the blood pumping and that’s the kinda stuff we wanna hear and see live.”

Those that get to witness Nihilist Death Cult play live can expect seasoned veterans going up on stage and putting on a show to match the energy of the music. There are no shoegazers here, just three passionate guys that want people to get into their music. They may be from Toronto but they are not a typical attitude Toronto band, they are the antithesis of that attitude.

The relatable lyrics are well enunciated making each of the nine songs on the album easy to pick up and get into. Nihilist Death Cult is recommended for fans of early DRI, early Bad Brains, and Nails.

The album was released on December 2, 2022 and is available at https://nihilistdeathcult.bandcamp.com

Chicago hardcore unit HARM’S WAY have announced a trio of live dates. On December 16th, the band will play a headlining show at The X Bar in Cupertino, California. The following night, the band will appear at The Belasco Theater in Los Angeles, California for day one of the two-day For The Children Toy Drive – an annual event that collects toys to be distributed to those in need – where they’ll play alongside Rotting Out, Drain, King Nine, Koyo, Fuming Mouth, and more.

In February, the band will take part in the inaugural HeartSupport Festival in Orlando, Florida. Launched by August Burns Red frontman Jake Luhrs to benefit his HeartSupport non-profit foundation, HARM’S WAY will perform on day two of the two-day fest alongside Rise Against, The Ghost Inside, Spiritbox, and many others. Tickets are on sale now. See all confirmed dates below.

HARM’S WAY:
12/16/2022 The X Bar – Cupertino, CA [tickets]
12/17/2022 For The Children Toy Drive @ The Belasco Theater – Los Angeles, CA [tickets]
2/19/2023 HeartSupport Festival @ Central Florida Fairgrounds – Orlando, FL [tickets]

HARM’S WAY’s most recent full-length, Posthuman, was released on Metal Blade Records in 2018. Having grown with each subsequent release, Posthuman was a devastating addition to HARM’S WAY‘s catalog. In 2019, HARM’S WAY released a remix EP of Posthuman titled PSTHMN, a record the band called, “the evolutionary counterpart to our 2018 full-length, Posthuman.” PSTHMN includes four remixed and reinterpreted tracks by artists that have continually inspired and influenced the band throughout its tenure.

WOLFBRIGADE – To Release Their Tenth Full-Length, The Enemy: Reality, Through Southern Lord In November; Details Posted

Posted in hardcore metal, metal music, Music, music news, news, rock music, world news with tags , , , on September 25, 2019 by Metal Odyssey

Southern Lord has issued the details of WOLFBRIGADE‘s impending tenth full-length, The Enemy: Reality, now confirmed for release on November 8th.

On the wind-bitten plains of Skaraborg, Sweden, the wolves have arisen once again. They are on the prowl, yearning for your blood, warm and fresh. On their tenth album, WOLFBRIGADE cuts deep, and they are ruthless. This time they have only submitted to themselves, from recording to production and artwork working in isolation, resulting in heightened senses and sharpened fangs. The ten songs rip into both body and mind, with no holds barred regarding power, substance, and melody.

This time around, WOLFBRIGADE‘s hybrid beast of Swedish hardcore and death metal known as Lycanthro Punk has become even more distinct. These ten tracks of destruction display both a love for 80s metal hooks and intros, as well as primitive hardcore brutality.

The lyrics on The Enemy: Reality dissect the state of human existence, the bizarre animal presence that we are. The naked apes. Exploring the dynamics that rule man. Power and submission. Manipulation. The injustices of inequality. This is an album seething with anger and frustration.

The band remarks, “Humans are a narcissistic breed, incapable of real change. This album is a way for us to deal with the fact that we are one of a large pack, submitting to the same societal norms as everyone else. No matter how much we would like it to be different. We are all on the same crazy trip.”

The Enemy: Reality will see release through Southern Lord on November 8th. Watch for audio premieres, preorders, and more to post in the weeks ahead. Following a one-off show in Los Angeles, California with Final Conflict and Dropdead and a set at Off Limits Festival in Naucalpan, Mexico last week, expect new live dates for WOLFBRIGADE to post over the coming months.

The Enemy: Reality – Track Listing:

  1. Sum Of All Vices
  2. Fire Untamed
  3. The Wolfman
  4. Hammer To The Skull

ENFORCED – WAR Records To Release “At The Walls” LP From Richmond Crossover Outfit; Tour Dates With Iron Reagan, Sacred Reich And Leeway Closing In

Posted in hardcore metal, Metal, Music, music news, music videos, news, rock music, world news with tags , , , , on May 2, 2019 by Metal Odyssey

WAR Records welcomes Richmond, Virginia-based crossover outfit ENFORCED to the label roster and is currently preparing the band’s At The Walls LP for summer release. With the album’s final details being sorted for pressing, the band is about to embark on a run of tour dates through the Northeastern US and into Canada supporting a vicious tour package with Sacred Reich, Iron Reagan, and Leeway.

Formed in 2016, ENFORCED picks up where Sepultura and Cro-Mags left off and infuses their own volatile, hardcore fury into the hardcore/thrash crossover sound of the late ’80s. Fronted by a voice that could only belong to that of a madman and unloading nonstop blazing riffs and pummeling breakdowns in every track, the band demolishes everything in their path, leaving a trail of smoldering wreckage and pure decimation anywhere they perform.

ENFORCED‘s impending At The Walls LP features a remixed and remastered version of the 2017 demo and their “Retaliation” promo, and introduces two brand new songs to the mix. All tracks were recorded by Bob Quirk and mixed and mastered by Arthur Rizk (Power Trip, Cavalera Conspiracy, Candy). In addition, Dwid Hellion (Integrity, Psywarfare) provides guest vocals to the track “Skinned Alive” who also created the apocalyptic album artwork for the LP.

Expect nothing but total war on stage from ENFORCED as they explode into 2019; a must-hear for fans of classic crossover/thrash from Nuclear Assault, Demolition Hammer, and Devastation, as well as modern shredders Skeletal Remains, Foreseen, and War Hungry. Watch for the final details on ENFORCED‘s At The Walls LP to be issued in the days ahead for an early summer release through WAR Records.

In the meantime, check out a vicious ENFORCED live set from United Blood 2019 earlier this month RIGHT HERE or below:

New Noise Magazine is now streaming the new single from New Jersey-based ROBOTS AND MONSTERS and their impending Nothing To Fear Nothing To Fight EP.

“Signing Off” is the closing track to the new seven-song record which follows a concept about battling your own mind, and as the band informs us of the track, “By the end of his journey, our anti-hero takes full ownership of his thoughts. In ‘Signing Off,’ we find him embracing the dread, the sadness. He yearns for peace, to ‘leave it all behind.’ Whether that means a physical end or a symbolic end to this internal suffering is up to the listener to decide.”

Hear ROBOTS AND MONSTERS’ new track “Signing Off” only through New Noise Magazine RIGHT HERE.

Also stream the EP opening “King Of The World” HERE.

Robots And Monsters - Nothing To Fear Nothing To Fight - promo album cover pic - 2016 - #MOILN

With its roots tracing to bands including Mucky Pup, The Bloodhound Gang, and more, ROBOTS AND MONSTERS owns a sound that deftly combines the commanding crunch of Metal with the groove, punch, and emotion of Hardcore and post-Hardcore, a trait which finds the band comfortably sharing bills populated with any type of aggressive music.

Their upcoming Nothing To Fear Nothing To Fight EP follows a concept about battling your own mind, the theme backed by high-energy Metal and dosed with old-school Hardcore. The seven-song storyline was recorded at Portrait Recording Studios with engineer John Ferrara, and mastered by Chris Badami, and features art by bassist Bill Bergmann.

ROBOTS AND MONSTERS will independently release the Nothing To Fear Nothing To Fight EP on CD and digital formats September 2nd; preorders are available via the band HERE.

ROBOTS AND MONSTERS continues to book shows through the Summer months in preparation of the new EP, including a show in New London, Connecticut on August 6th, a show in Brooklyn supporting All Out War on August 13th, and more, with more one-off shows and widespread tour dates to be added.

ROBOTS AND MONSTERS Live:

4.5 Out Of 5 METAL Fists!

ENABLER – The great Midwest cities of Milwaukee (WI), Dayton (OH) and Minneapolis (MN) are home to the unbelievably savage: ENABLER. Ever since I (finally) started to listen to their new EP, Shift Of Redemption, this band has made my Metal week! ENABLER fuses Metal, Hardcore and Punk into their own seamless form. If you’re into this scene of Hardcore Metal, get ready, cause ENABLER will smash you senseless!

Founding member, guitarist and vocalist Jeff Lohrber exhibits a top-tier Hardcore performance on this EP; as does this entire band and they have a raging chemistry that boils over through each song. If ENABLER’s musical hostility can’t get your ass moving, then, you’re already six feet beneath the ground. ENABLER has proven to me they are a fiery force to reckon with within this genre and Shift Of Redemption only magnifies my said belief. Metal be thy name.

Shift Of Redemption was released via Think Fast! Records worldwide on April 9th as a digital download and 7”; the first pressing was limited to 1,000 copies, with 350 copies pressed on gold wax and 650 on clear.

Empire Of Rats - S:T - promo cover pic

A389 Recordings this week proclaims the signing of Columbus, Ohio-based death-dealers EMPIRE OF RATS and the impending release of their vindictive self-titled debut full-length recording this Autumn.

A cast of warriors who have collectively done time in Palehorse, Under One Flag, Pitboss 2000 and countless others unify in their hateful talents in EMPIRE OF RATS, forming a devastating style which is a brutal reminder that heavy hardcore is alive and well. On their self-titled debut LP these scene-veterans have created a perfect record that is sincere, energetic and unapologetically pissed-off without coming off as paint-by-numbers, an eleven-anthem dose of metallic, unsuppressed aggression with a style that will inspire fans of Hatebreeed, 100 Demons, Cold As Life, Ringworm, Crucified, Homewrecker and the like to seek street revenge on their enemies in no time. Bearing cover art by Linas Garsys, the deal is sealed and now A389 will release the album via download and 12” vinyl on October 1st, 2013.

Today Lambgoat dishes out the first public beatdown from Empire Of Ratswith an exclusive stream of the track “Another Minute In Hell” – CLICK HERE TO UNLEASH.

Having stormed crowds live regionally across American wastelands including pit-fueled sets at U.S. festivals including The Rumble, This Is Hardcore and more, EMPIRE OF RATS will announce new live throwdowns and tour actions in support of the looming LP over the coming months.

Empire Of Rats – Track Listing:

1. Leeches

2. Another Minute In Hell

3. Bottomless Pit

4. Untitled

5. Society’s Zero

6. Rats Reign

7. Sinking

8. Little From The World

Critical Praise:

“Full of Hell want to open wounds however they can. The four-piece is so focused on delivering bile-soaked fury that they’ll use nearly anything at their disposal. While most of the tracks are acrid flashes of grind and powerviolence, there are still treks through squeamish noise and torturous hardcore. Seems like there’s always new releases by these guys, but this is the best I’ve heard so far.” – Decibel

“…Rudiments of Mutilation is an incredible album that should not go unheard. It is sick, unnerving, excellently established, moody, violent, and one of the best damn records that will be put out this year. You want dark? Here it is motherfuckers. Eat it up. 9.5/10” – Metal Injection

BL’AST! – An Unreleased Recording Session Brought To Life By Dave Grohl

Posted in hardcore, hardcore metal, Music, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , , , on July 5, 2013 by Metal Odyssey

BL'AST! - promo cover pic - Blood!

Set For September Release Via Southern Lord

_____________________________________

As far as stories of lost and found recorded material go, few tales can be told where all the pieces of the puzzle come together in fortunate ways, resulting in a brand new recording that surprised even the band themselves.

Having formed in 1982, infamous Santa Cruz hardcore legends BL’AST! released their first album, The Power of Expression in 1985. This debut blew everyone away and went on to become one of the highly sought after, “must- have” hardcore albums of the ‘80s. BL’AST! was beyond intense, continually pushing the boundaries of hardcore with their advanced musicianship, unstoppable energetic delivery and explosive live performances. This overwhelming power caught the attention of SST records, who released the band’s second album, It’s In My Blood in 1987.

Their third LP, Take The Manic Ride, was then released by the label in 1989. BL’AST!‘s wide-eyed, ambitious approach and intense perseverance became an influence for many bands to come. Shortly after the release of Take The Manic Ride, the band broke up and their story was buried by time and dust….UNTIL NOW!

Earlier this year BL’AST! guitarist Mike Neider contacted Southern Lord with news that he had found some mysterious old BL’AST! master tapes in an abandoned storage locker. Greg Anderson, a BL’AST! fanatic, wasted no time in sending the tapes to a studio to be baked. Needless to say, after 25 years gathering dust, the quality had deteriorated. Still, nobody could have anticipated what would follow. With the audio digitized, Southern Lord contacted fellow longtime BL’AST! fiend, Dave Grohl about mixing this recording, his response was an enthusiastic “FUCK YEAH!, LETS DO THIS”!

BL'AST! - Large Band Logo - red:black:white

Whilst inside Grohl’s famous 606 Studios (and with the Neve console as featured in the recent Grohl produced documentary Sound City) an astonishing discovery was made; a completely unheard, unreleased BL’AST! recording session from the mid-‘80s.

The lineup of the band at the time of the recording included second guitarist William Duvall (from Neon Christ, and now the current vocalist for Alice In Chains) who had moved from his hometown of Atlanta out to Santa Cruz on a tip from mutual friends, Corrosion of Conformity, to join the band. Unfortunately, his tenure with BL’AST! was short-lived and no recordings from that lineup were ever released.

From the thunderous bass intro of “Only Time Will Tell” to the apocalyptic warnings of “It’s In My Blood,” the album completely rips and rages from start to finish. All parties involved were completely amazed at how vibrant, unique and fresh this newly discovered material sounded. All things considered, it is miraculous the record survived this long and that everyone who was involved in bringing this recording to life, could be. Everything fell into place, when it could have easily crumbled along the way. This record is a time capsule that is meant to be heard!

There is no doubt in our minds that Blood! will be a crucial purchase for any current hardcore fiend as well as punk/hardcore fans who loved the band back in the day. START THE MACHINE!

Blood will see release via Southern Lord in North America on September 3, 2013. Stay tuned for further details to be unearthed. For now, check out a brand new visual trailer including the cover art for Blood! and more RIGHT HERE.
