June 5, 2012, LOS ANGELES — The Melvins will attempt to become the Guinness World Record holders for the first band to tour the full United States and D.C. in 51 days with a tour kicking off Sept. 5 in Anchorage, Alaska and wrapping up Oct. 25 in Honolulu, Hawaii.

“We figured it was time for us to do something REALLY crazy,” said Osborne. “51 shows in 50 states plus 1 on D.C. and all in 51 days?  Jeez!  I wonder if we can do it?”

The tour, which will feature the Melvins Lite line-up of Buzz Osborne, Dale Crover and Trevor Dunn, also marks the first time in the band’s near 30-year history that they will perform in Alaska, New Hampshire, Delaware and Hawaii.

The Melvins Performance of “The War on Wisdom” from a recent episode of Last Call with Carson Daly can be seen by clicking the link below:

Arriving in-stores and online today is Freak Puke, the debut release from Melvins Lite that Spin recently described as “a unique detour for the long-running band” and adding “one of the loudest bands on earth has perfectly siphoned their gloomy energy into evil cocktail jazz.”

Trevor Dunn

“We had seen Trevor playing upright bass in a jazz setting and thought that we could utilize that for a recording project,” explained Crover. “This is something different from the two drummer/big hair line-up, which we plan on continuing with as well.”

Prior to the Fall, the Melvins have a full spate of appearances.  The band perform two shows in conjunction with Subliminal Projects: June 8 at The Echoplex in Los Angeles and June 30 at  TT Underground Gallery in New York.  Buzz Osborne will be a guest on Fox News’ “Red Eye with Greg Gutfeld” on June 28.   Melvins Lite will also venture north for a three week trek of primarily Canadian tour dates that kicks off on July 1 (dates below).

FOOLS FOR ROWAN – Nashville Based Rock Band Releases New Single on iTunes: “Killed A Man Today”

Posted in Hard Rock, hard rock news, melodic rock, Music, rock bands, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , , on June 4, 2012 by Metal Odyssey

Los Angeles, CA – Fools For Rowan pleases their fans once again with their new single, “Killed A Man Today“. The track, off their forth-coming EP, Who Killed Amanda Day?, is currently available on iTunes. The Nashville five-some will also be releasing a new music video to accompany the song.

Known for powerful vocals and fierce guitar progressions, Fools For Rowan are by no means new players to the Rock scene; touring with artists like Evanescence, Halestorm, and Trapt, a national college tour, and three invitations to play Summerfest, are just a few of their many achievements. The band is comprised of five very diverse and equally talented musicians and together they bring a tough, but emotional stance to the table through their lyrics and sound.

Recorded and engineered by Stoker White at Omnisound Studios, in their hometown of Nashville, “Killed A Man Today,” arose from Fools For Rowan’s partnering with producers Shaye Smith and Ken Harrell, as well as mixing and mastering from Beau Hill (Winger and Ratt). The drop of the new single is not only heavily awaited by fans, but also by the band, “We’ve been working on this for a while now so I am just dying to finally get it out there and get it in the hands of the fans that have supported and inspired all of this!” says lead vocalist, Erin Mullins.

Fools For Rowan is making impressive conquests in the rock scene and is a force to be reckoned with as they proceed to gain exposure. Their music video for “Dead” has been featured on Fuse TV On Demand and the band was named one of iHeartRadio’s Artists to Watch, as well as one of the “Hot 100 Unsigned Artists” by Music Connection Magazine. If “Killed A Man Today” provides any sort of looking-glass into the future, then expect great things from their sophomore album, Who Killed Amanda Day?

THE ORDER “The Power Of Love” From Forthcoming Album “1986” – Stone’s Metal Pick Of The Day!

Posted in Hard Rock, hard rock albums, Heavy Metal, heavy metal albums, heavy metal news, Music, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , , , , on June 4, 2012 by Metal Odyssey

THE ORDER –  1986 is the fourth and new studio album from Switzerland’s old school Hard & Heavy Rock band known as: THE ORDER. 1986 will be released on July 27th, 2012, via Massacre Records. THE ORDER have toured Europe with the legendary likes of W.A.S.P., Primal Fear, Sinner, Y&T and SHAKRA.

Stone Says: I remember 1986 very well (okay, so there are some parts of 1986 that are a little foggy in my brain, um, yeah). What a year 1986 was for Hard Rock and Heavy Metal! THE ORDER couldn’t pick a better year from the legendary 80’s, as the title for their newest album. The 80’s and especially 1986 were… good Rockin’ times in my life! Whoa and hell yes. Ring that Metal bell for ’86 memories!

Take a listen below to their new single The Power Of Love, taken from their 1986 album. This song 100% ROCKS! THE ORDER has nailed it, delivering some high-octane and Hard Rockin’ vibes on this song! If you’re a 1980’s Hard Rock, Heavy Metal and Arena Rock loyalist, I’d practically guarantee that you’re gonna be buying this 1986 album from THE ORDER! Uh, no, this is not The Power Of Love song from Back To The Future. Sorry.

Now go ahead and crank up THE ORDER! Metal be thy name.

KISS KOLLECTIBLES – Wanna See My KISS Frisbee? Let’s Revisit Some RATT and Other Cool Stuff…

Posted in classic rock, Hard Rock, Heavy Metal, heavy metal news, Music, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , , , , on June 4, 2012 by Metal Odyssey

KISS KOLLECTIBLES – That’s it at the top! That’s my KISS Frisbee. You bet. I bought it from a souvenir shop at Dorney Park & Wildwater Kingdom a couple of years ago. KISS Kollectibles can be found where you’d least expect ’em. I remember it cost $10 (U.S.) and I was psyched to lay the money down for it. As I just wrote that last sentence, Lay It Down from RATT popped into my head, whoa. Good song too.

Okay, so I don’t use this KISS Frisbee to throw around outside (or inside either). I keep it out in the open leaning against some albums. Weird stuff, I know. What can I do? I’m a KISSAHOLIC and dig KISS Kollectibles. (The KISS Kollectibles I can afford that is).

Alright, since I had to go and mention Lay It Down by RATT, here is the album cover for Invasion Of Your Privacy:

Invasion Of Your Privacy was released back in 1985, on Atlantic Records. I remember buying this RATT release on vinyl, at a department store named Caldor. I remember like it was yesterday, walking with this album under my arm through the store and on my way to the checkout. I remember feeling my face getting all hot and flush from the album cover too; feeling like every customer I passed by was staring at the album cover and then at me. Man, was I a goober.

The hot (Playboy) model on this RATT album cover is Marianne Gravatte. It’s not like I bought this album back then for the cover, still, it didn’t hurt either. The other “hit” single from Invasion Of Your Privacy was You’re In Love. Good song. I liked the MTV videos for both hit songs too. You remember MTV? They used to play music videos! Now MTV stands for: Moron Television.

Here’s some fun & fast facts about the stuff you’ve just read:

01 – Invasion Of Your Privacy has reached Double Platinum status. Whoa.

02 – KISS RULES.

03 – Marianne Gravatte also appeared in the Lay It Down music video.

04 – KISS not being inducted into The Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame is an F’n joke.

05 – The name “Frisbee” is a generic term attached to any flying plastic disc. However, the gentleman responsible for branding the Frisbee is Richard Knerr ( inventor and co-founder of Wham-O).

Alright, since you’ve stuck around this post (and I greatly appreciate that) here is a Metal bonus for you! Check out my Orange County Choppers Frisbee below! Whoa.

I bought this cool Orange County Choppers Frisbee right at the OCC store/headquarters itself, up in Orange County, New York! A few years back is when I journeyed to OCC. The souvenir shop they have there is gigantic! You can buy just about anything there with the OCC logo on it! By the way, the choppers they have built and on display there are simply breathtaking, let me tell you. Metal be thy name.

Melvins Lite “Freak Puke” – I’ve Listened. I Dig It. I Highly Recommend It. Will It Really All Matter? I Hope So…

Posted in alternative rock, experimental rock, Hard Rock, Music, rock albums, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , , , on June 3, 2012 by Metal Odyssey

MELVINS LITE – The irrefutable legendary band known across Earth as The Melvins are Melvins Lite with their new studio album Freak Puke. This ten song offering from Melvins Lite will be released on June 5th, 2012, via Ipecac. For loyal and new fans alike, I’ve decided to list some excerpts from past press releases that sheds more “lite” on why The Melvins are Melvins Lite on Freak Puke. Here we go and enjoy:

The Melvins unveil the latest twist in their 29-year history with Melvins Lite, an additional incarnation of the band that finds founders Buzz Osborne and Dale Crover partnering with Trevor Dunn (Mr. Bungle, Tomahawk) for a 10-song release titled Freak Puke.

Buzz Osborne has stated, in a prior press release:

“The Melvins have a long history of mixing up our line-ups and I think that’s what has kept us relevant for so long,” explains Osborne. “Consider the Freak Puke record the fifth side of the four-sided Melvins triangle.”

The Melvins have decided to release an album called “Freak Puke.” AND they’ve decided to call it Melvins “Lite.” It’s still the Melvins of course but the “Lite” moniker comes from the fact that they’ve recorded the entire record with the always busy and fabulously talented Trevor Dunn playing a stand up double bass and it sounds really cool! It’s new musical territory for the Melvins and it works like a charm…”

Stone says, about Freak Puke and other related stuff:

My curiosity for The Melvins came to a boil back in 1993, when Houdini was released. This was the fifth album from The Melvins, so I knew I had some catching up to do with their back catalog. Houdini did it for me and the rest is (who gives a crap) history. I’m guessing once you listen to The Melvins once, you’re sucked in by the uncanny way they make their music different.

Fast forward to 2012 and Freak Puke from Melvins Lite. Wether it’s Houdini, Freak Puke or any other album from The Melvins that’s in-between, I’ve come to the belief that The Melvins follow no musical path but their own. As I write this epic album review, that classic line from (Bill Murray) who played Tripper Harrison in the 1979 comedy film, Meatballs, comes to my mind: “It just doesn’t matter.”

What doesn’t matter Stone? Well, I’ll tell you since you’re pondering. Trying to declare what genre The Melvins or Melvins Lite belongs to… it just doesn’t matter. Caring if anyone out there gives a crap that I really dig Freak Puke… it just doesn’t matter. Telling the world that Freak Puke ranks as a high recommendation from Stone… it just doesn’t matter.

What does matter is The Melvins musical existence. This Freak Puke album from Melvins Lite doesn’t follow a flavor-of-the-month blueprint for gratitude; that slimy gratitude from the snotty hierarchy that manipulates the mainstream. From the onset, Mr. Rip Off reminds me that this band is not ripping off anyone (no pun intended). Besides, I could sit for a month of Mondays and still not be able to name another band that sounds like this. Yes, that’s a grand statement to make, especially when soundalikes are more abundant in the music world than there are synthetic additives found in one Hostess Twinkie.

For those who truly need to know, Freak Puke is a heavy album. You’ll hear heavy guitar, heavy beats and clean vocals. Eccentric vocals at times too. With that said, Freak Puke is also a listen into what’s not heavy and still comes across as… heavy. Experimental. Alternative. Heavy. Sludgy. That’s Freak Puke and yes, I did throw out some damn Rock genres after all. Then again… it just doesn’t matter.

Wait, what does matter is my persuasiveness in prompting you to buy Freak Puke. Don’t follow the robotic crowd of cheerleaders for America’s Got Talent or any other plastic Pop Culture crap on a plate, try to be different. Be very different. Melvins Lite won’t bite. Hey, that rhymed. Still, it just doesn’t matter.

Let your ears become saturated with some Melvins Lite and be introduced to Rock ‘N Roll the way it was meant to be played; Rock ‘N Roll that shoots straight from the hip, without any predetermined obligations to those Rock historian morons that push out 50 pound coffee table books and vote at The Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame. Freak Puke, courtesy of Melvins Lite, aims and succeeds to spread some messed-up fun and madness, on a sonic ride that is an instant remedy for Rock ‘N Roll status-quo-itis.

At the end of my semi-boring day, I surely hope my blab for Melvins Lite and Freak Puke does matter. At least a little bit. Metal be thy name.

I’m guessed at the spelling of Glen Hughez. Is it supposed to be the iconic Glenn Hughes? Maybe that is how the name is spelled in Bulgaria? Could it be a Glenn Hughes “All-Star” Tribute Band? I just don’t know.

SLIPKNOT – Mick Thomson and Jim Root – On Cover Of June 2012 Issue Of Guitar World

Posted in Hard Rock, Heavy Metal, heavy metal albums, heavy metal news, metal music, Music, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , , , , on May 26, 2012 by Metal Odyssey

SLIPKNOT – This past week I had the opportunity to catch up with the June 2012 issue of Guitar World and what an issue! There is a fabulous interview with Slipknot’s Mick Thomson and Jim Root that no fan of this legendary band should miss. Richard Bienstock asked some real and sincere questions during this interview; an engaging read it is. I truly admire the members of Slipknot for moving forward in the absence of their Metal brother, the late Paul Gray. Long Live Slipknot.

John 5 is also interviewed by Richard Bienstock and what a very cool read! John 5 talks about scoring the upcoming Rob Zombie directed Horror film The Lords of Salem, his gear and new album God Told Me To; plus John 5 reveals about his recording an acoustic album with David Lee Roth! This acoustic album is still to be released. Whoa! This is good stuff!

A tremendous article on PANTERA’s iconic Vulgar Display Of Power is included in this issue! Interviews with the surviving members of PANTERA on the making of this album to personal thoughts on the late Dimebag Darrell, this feature makes for a mandatory Metal read.

Look for some of my quick Metal thoughts about the July issue of Guitar World which features SLASH on the cover, this coming week! Metal be thy name.

Some Metal and Rock ‘N Roll Thoughts – Friday, May 25th, 2012

Memorial Day – CD Cover (Knightsbridge – 2009)

Memorial Day weekend is upon us here, in the grand country of America. A federal holiday, Memorial Day is always celebrated on the last Monday of May. Memorial Day is for remembering and honoring all service men and women who’ve died in all the wars which America has been involved in. Parades, memorial services, fireworks shows and family picnics are four common ways in which Memorial Day is celebrated.

I am thankful to all the soldiers who gave their lives for American freedom. I’m also thankful to all the active duty service men and women of our armed forces who keep our country safe each day; as well as those who survived these terrible wars; both the wounded and retired.

Mark Tremonti (founding member/guitarist of Creed and Alter Bridge) will be having his debut solo album, All I Was, releasing in early July. The one and only time I interviewed Mark was for Hard Rock Hideout, back in March of 2011. Mark was a soft-spoken, polite and nice guy. You can read this interview in its entirety by clicking the large link below!

The new Aerosmith album, Music From Another Dimension, will be released on August 28th, 2012. This will be the 15th studio album from Aerosmith (counting their 2004 cover album Honkin’ On Bobo). I hope it’s a good Rockin’ album. The album artwork looks cool; it’s very retro. I will sample this album online before I make a purchase though…

JORN “Bring Heavy Rock To The Land” – Some Metal Thoughts On This Heavy Rock Keeper

Posted in Hard Rock, hard rock albums, Heavy Metal, heavy metal albums, heavy metal news, Music, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , , , on May 23, 2012 by Metal Odyssey

JORNBring Heavy Rock To The Land will be releasing on June 1st in Europe and on June 5th in North America, via Frontiers Records. Produced by Jorn Lande and mixed by Tommy Hansen at Jailhouse Studios in Denmark; Bring Heavy Rock To The Land is the seventh original studio album for Jorn.

Stone’s Metal Thoughts:

I consider Jorn Lande to be one of the finest Hard Rock and Heavy Metal vocalists out there today. My first impression of this new album from Jorn was so incredibly positive. It still is. I’ve been assured, after several (call it 6) thorough listens, that Bring Heavy Rock To The Land is one of the heavyweights of the Hard Rock and Heavy Metal genres in 2012.

Jorn Lande has a striking band behind his stupendous vocals. Damn striking. Big guitars playing unforgettable leads and solos; with delectable beats, melodies and rhythms seeping out of every crevice of this album. Guitarists Tore Moren and Jimmy Iversen are purely electrifying to listen to.

It’s never been a secret that Jorn Lande loves doing cover songs. Jorn singing Ride Like The Wind is spine-tingling to me; Jorn sings the living daylights out of this Christopher Cross classic from 1980. The band nails it too, giving Ride Like The Wind a Hard and Heavy persona, one that I never knew could possibly be created with such undisputed power. A grand tribute to such a legendary Rock song.

From beginning to end and from top to bottom, Jorn has put together a Heavy Rock keeper for us Defenders Of The Faith. Jorn ends this captivating album with I Came To Rock. The lyrics are breathtaking for my ears and soul. Even if you’ve never heard or owned a Jorn album before; Bring Heavy Rock To The Land will make you want to own every album Jorn Lande has ever been a part of.

I never doubted for a second, that Jorn and his band would Rock like hell with their new album. My Metal brethren, please assemble and behold, that Jorn came to Rock and it must be told. Metal be thy name.

BIBLE OF THE DEVIL “For The Love Of Thugs & Fools” – A Heavy Rock Prize For 2012 And Beyond

Posted in classic rock, Hard Rock, hard rock albums, Heavy Metal, heavy metal albums, heavy metal news, metal music, Music, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , , on May 22, 2012 by Metal Odyssey

BIBLE OF THE DEVIL – The sixth studio album, For The Love Of Thugs & Fools, from Chicago’s Bible Of The Devil, has been released on May 8th, 2012, via Cruz Del Sur. This is a Rock ‘N Metal band that has been around the block several times… and their newest album chronicles the experiences they’ve encountered and seen. This is denim and leather. This is genuine bad-ass Rock ‘N Roll. This is Bible Of The Devil.

With a stellar combination of influences ranging from Classic Rock to Metal, the overall sound of Bible Of The Devil is so embracing and original that it’s unavoidably addicting. Heavy, hard and crunchy guitars, a foot stomping rhythm section, with a caravan of melodic moments to dive your voracious eardrums into; For The Love Of Thugs & Fools is a Heavy Rock delicacy that’s all wrapped up in a blue-collar package.

I can hear the spirit of classic Thin Lizzy and early KISS cascading from these songs that Bible Of The Devil play; and these guys play so damn accomplished. A “no remorse” vibe swirls around this album and I dig that a ton. Once again, originality is the key element and this band summons up what is exuberant about the golden years of Hard Rock and Heavy Metal. Duo guitars and sing-along chorus’ elevate this album to a level of Hard Rockin’ intoxication. Mark Hoffmann (vocals, guitar) sings with a free and easy enthusiasm; a cool reminder that Heavy Rock is supposed to be loose and not uptight after all.

I’ve been swept off my Heavy Rockin’ feet by Bible Of The Devil with their new album; an album so memorable, that it’s a flat-out prize which has been set loose on the Heavy Music world in 2012. Raw and Order, Anytime, Yer Boy and The Parcher are all heavy hitting’ gems among 9 gemstones. If you’re looking for a Rock ‘N Metal band that carries their street attitude into their music, with absolutely 0% bullshit, then you’ve obviously been looking for Bible Of The Devil all along.

Some “Comeback Albums” Should Go Back Home; While Others Are Welcome To Stay

Posted in classic rock, Hard Rock, hard rock albums, Heavy Metal, heavy metal albums, heavy metal news, Music, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , , , , on May 21, 2012 by Metal Odyssey

Dud Exhibit A: Sledge Leather – Imagine Me Alive

Let’s face it, not every band that hibernates for a number of years (or decades) is going to have a successful comeback. (I’ll get back to this momentarily). I have written numerous album reviews that involve successful comebacks. At least I think they were successful. Trixter and Mr. Big have both released above amazing comeback albums, in my Metal opinion. Tyketto really surprised and psyched the living daylights out of me, with their new (and memorable) comeback album: Dig In Deep.

My open letter to any past successful band and/or musician thinking about recording a comeback album includes some realistic thought. With the Rock, Hard Rock and Metal markets saturated with bands of all generations, all vying for the same money and audiences; many very good new album releases do get lost in the shuffle, regardless if they kick ass. Therefore, a “comeback album” has to consist of unreal quality music with unreal memorable songs. Using smoke and mirrors while resting on laurels doesn’t work anymore. Period. Without quality songs and non-rusted musicianship, any comeback album will fall flat on its face.

Dud Exhibit B: Black ‘n Blue – Hell Yeah!

A once famous “name” isn’t a guarantee of fortune and fame. Lita Ford found that out back in 2009 with her comeback studio “effort” called: Wicked Wonderland. The once popular 80’s Hard Rock band Black ‘n Blue released a mammoth dud with their comeback album from 2011: Hell Yeah! Whoa, it’s a dud. Here in 2012, we have Sledge Leather making a magical comeback. Their new album, Imagine Me Alive, is not that good. As a matter of fact, it sounds like it was slapped together in 3 or less days. Structurally, the songs on Imagine Me Alive lost me and It’s all a complete mess.

I will be the first to admit, in recent years, with the 80’s Hard Rock and Heavy Metal resurgence, many old school bands have Rocked my face off with their comeback albums. Hello KISS and Whitesnake. Then you have the Doobie Brothers and Iron Claw releasing albums of 100% Rockin’substance; both of their comeback albums I still can’t get enough of. Anthrax released an unbelievably grand comeback album with Worship Music; plus they play unquestionably kick-ass live today as they did during the 80’s.

Not all comeback albums are pretty and yet many are gems. Sample songs on the internet and read a few album reviews before you make a comeback album purchase. Metal be thy name.

Some Metal and Rock ‘N Roll Thoughts – Sunday, May 20th, 2012

Posted in classic rock, Hard Rock, Heavy Metal, heavy metal albums, heavy metal news, metal music, Music, rock and roll, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , , , on May 20, 2012 by Metal Odyssey

As this weekend embarks on its second half, the yearning for 36 hour days never seems to wane for me. I always feel like I’m catching up on stuff; from yard work, paperwork and paying bills to new Metal album releases. I’m forever guilty of ignoring that golden rule: Don’t sweat the little things. Still, at the beginning and end of every 24 hour day, I am still grateful to be alive!

To anyone who has been kind enough to take the moment from their busy day and visit Metal Odyssey, here are a few Metal and Rock ‘N Roll thoughts that I want to share:

SAXON – This tuesday (May 22nd), in North America, the 2 CD/1 DVD set titled Heavy Metal Thunder – Live – Eagles Over Wacken gets released. I’ll be putting this Saxon release on my Metal want list, there’s no doubt. The price isn’t cheap, then again, there are 2 CD’s and a DVD involved here. Who knows, maybe I’ll find this cool Saxon set sometime in 2017… at an open-air flea market… for 3 dollars.

BLACK SABBATH – As the family feud continues to unfold in the Black Sabbath camp, the latest news is so immature that it’s beyond shocking. Apparently, as its been reported everywhere: vintage and/or recent band photos of Black Sabbath have been placed on the official Black Sabbath website… with Bill Ward cropped out of them! Metal be thy name!

* UPDATE – I guess it’s now being reported, as of mid-day on May 20th, that Bill Ward requested to have his image cropped out of any Black Sabbath group photos, which are shown on the Black Sabbath official website. Whatever. Who cares at this point. This is why I usually don’t write about any band’s soap opera moments. From here on in, I won’t cover any more related news regarding this Black Sabbath story. That’s it. I’m a fan who is fed up. Life is too damn short for me to worry about this nonsense.

Maybe Black Sabbath should just change their band name altogether now? Without Bill Ward, it’s no longer the original Black Sabbath. To assist the Black Sabbath camp in moving forward, here are several sincere and free band name suggestions from Stone:

1. – The Ozzy Trio

2. – Sharon Calls The Shots

3. – Sharon Knows Best

4. – The Osbourne Way

5. – Ozzy & His Band

6. – No Contract For You!

7. – Bill Who?

Is it just me or are the following two album covers kinda similar? Same artist? I don’t know. Same idea? Looks like it. Both layouts are basically identical too. Weird how this sometimes happens. I’ll also add that the Running Wild album cover has a chunk of Voivod influence with the artwork.

Honestly, I’m not that impressed with either of the album cover art below. This is what I used to see being done in my high school graphic arts class… back in 1983. I used to sit through many critiques in art class while in college, so believe me, I know how proud artists can be about their work. I was always proud of my art, regardless the degree of difficulty. However, these two album covers below were not that difficult to create.

Death By Stereo – Black Sheep Of The American Dream

Running Wild – Shadowmaker

Okay! That’s it! My Metal and Rock ‘N Roll Thoughts for Sunday, May 20th, have come to a close. I really hope you’ve enjoyed your visit to Metal Odyssey and will come again… and again. Leave a comment! The more comments that are made, the less likelihood that my boss will crop me out of his photographs! Make the most of your day today and watch out for parking lot speed bumps.

Some Metal and Rock ‘N Roll Thoughts – Saturday, May 19th, 2012

Posted in disco, Hard Rock, Heavy Metal, heavy metal news, Music, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , , , on May 19, 2012 by Metal Odyssey

Another week in the Metal books and still those (robotic-like) political talking heads continue to invade my late night television viewing; as I try to find cool documentaries on Bigfoot, UFO’s, ghost hunting and swamp dudes that aren’t afraid of nothing. As you can see, not all reality television is repulsive to me; especially when I’m informed by intellectual thinkers wearing L.L. Bean shirts as to when and where the next apocalypse will take place. I just hope I have my family by my side when this all comes down, along with my Motörhead, Orange Goblin and Six Feet Under CD’s.

The new Marilyn Manson album, Born Villain, was released on May 1st. I just bought it this past Thursday at Target. Yes, Target. Metal be thy name! The same super retailer who doesn’t carry squat when it comes to Metal or anti-Pop; then all of a sudden they’re selling Marilyn Manson’s new CD! Marilyn Manson’s (bonus track) cover of Carly Simon’s 1972 monster hit, You’re So Vain, is on this digipak copy I bought too. I don’t know if it’s a Target exclusive or not; quite frankly it gets confusing after a while when it comes to exclusives and bonus tracks.

Carly Simon – No Secrets (1972 -Elektra)

I alway’s found Carly Simon’s voice to be quite alluring. As a young lad, I used to get super huge ostrich bumps on my face and arms, every time You’re So Vain came on the radio. I’ve always taken a liking to this song. Go figure. Now, when I hear Marilyn Manson sing You’re So Vain, I’m just plain scared straight. Marilyn’s Industrial Metal meets horror style to You’re So Vain is an unreal listen. I actually like it better than Faster Pussycat’s cover of this same song. Trust me… Marilyn Manson made You’re So Vain into his very creepy own.

Side Note: Apparently, this cover of You’re So Vain features Johnny Depp too. I guess the dude does backing vocals. Whatever. Makes no difference to me. Next time I hope Marilyn Manson calls me to do backing vocals on one of his songs.

I cannot believe the music world has lost both Whitney Houston and Donna Summer in the same year. If someone was to have told me this would happen, I would’ve told them to take a long hike through a patch of thistle. Unfortunately, both these legendary voices of song are no longer alive and that’s sad to me.

Donna Summer passed away on May 17th, at the young age of 63. I express condolences to the family, friends and fans of Donna Summer. While growing up in the late 70’s and early 80’s, I couldn’t avoid being exposed to the Disco and Pop songs of Donna Summer. I can’t erase my past and I wouldn’t want to if I tried. My (late) sister had many of Donna Summer’s 45’s.

My favorite Donna Summer song is definitely McArthur Park. If my memory serves me right, this was my sister’s favorite as well. Just about every wedding I’ve ever been to, (with a hired DJ), Last Dance is played. Heck, my wedding had Last Dance as the “last song” as well. As Lenny Wolf of Kingdom Come would say: “It is what it is.”

Alright, those are some Metal and Rock ‘N Roll thoughts for Saturday, May 19th, 2012. Believe me, I have hundreds of other Rockin’ thoughts to share and I could go on all day and night; I just don’t want to tie you up any longer. I realize you have other stuff to do. It’s cool.

METAL BE THY NAME.

SWEET “New York Connection” – Cover Song Album Transcends and Celebrates The Classics Of Rock

Posted in album reviews, classic rock, Hard Rock, hard rock albums, Music, rock and roll, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , , , , on May 18, 2012 by Metal Odyssey

SWEET – When I first learned of this cover song album, I realized there really is no better Rock ‘N Roll band in the land than Sweet, that could celebrate such revered Classic Rock songs. Then again, I believe Def Leppard could pull it off too. Regardless, this is Sweet in 2012 and the legendary Andy Scott (founding member, guitarist, vocalist) has once again proven that his bands legacy is stronger than ever; through the Hard Rockin’ cover song album New York Connection.

Without question, I fell head over heels for the cover of New York Groove. I truthfully played this song upon my first introduction to it, let’s say, twenty times in a row? The soaring vocals! The steady upbeat vibes and total good-times feel of New York Groove came at me in Rockin’ waves! Then, once I listened to all eleven songs on New York Connection, those amazing Rockin’ and good-times vibes never subsided!

Ring the Metal Odyssey bell and tell all the nations, that Sweet has signed, sealed and delivered Rock ‘N Roll jubilation!

After all these years, the sound of Sweet still comes packaged with full-throttle relevance. Andy Scott and his band did a fabulous job at keeping the original Rock essence and stylings of these eleven classics intact; while truly making these said classics their own. With drummer Bruce Bisland singing lead vocals on Blitzkrieg Bop, Sweet kept the Punk in every beat of this song! The one song Andy Scott sings lead vocals on is The Velvet Underground’s Sweet Jane. Excellent stuff. Metal be thy name does Sweet elevate Sweet Jane to an unreal Hard Rockin’ level of pure joy.

Keyboardist Tony O’Hora sings lead vocals on Because The Night and he righteously nails it. Bassist Pete Lincoln sings lead vocals on the rest of the songs and he is a Rockin’ treat to listen to. Pete’s vocals maintain that spirit of vintage Sweet. On Broadway has never been given a Hard Rockin’ shine like the one you’ll hear on this album. With all I’ve stated about the vocals; throw in the signature tones of Andy Scott’s guitar, with each musicians contribution to the songs and this covers album illuminates my eardrums into Classic Rock overdrive!

Like their legendary peers of Mott The HoopleBadfinger and Uriah Heep, (to name only a few), Sweet is a band that justifiably originated Hard Rock outside the iconic Beatles, Rolling Stones, The DoorsThe Who and The Animals. My point being; the legacy of Sweet continues onward in 2012 and the Rock historical importance of this band goes far beyond what any misinformed “Rock historians” at the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame may think. This is a band whose legacyinfluence and image helped pave the way for many bands that dominated on Sunset Strip back in the 80’s; I’m not bashful about reminding my Metal brethren of that.

The grand thing is Rock ‘N Roll history can never be erased and New York Connection is 100% proof of that. Sweet (both past and present) is a quasar in Rock ‘N Roll history. This band should be celebrated by Rock fans across all genres in 2012. I highly recommend you celebrate Rock ‘N Roll history with Sweet, by buying and playing LOUD this exceptional cover song album they’ve created and call New York Connection.
