Stone Says: WTF? To 10 Heavy Metal / Hard Rock Facts

Posted in Hard Rock, Heavy Metal, Metal, metal bands, metal music, Music, rock music with tags , , , on April 30, 2015 by Metal Odyssey

Stone Says - WTF? - promo heading banner - Metal Odyssey - 2015

I love and live for Heavy Metal and Hard Rock. However, there are those factual incidents during the history of my beloved Heavy Music genres that make me say… WTF? Below is a list of 10 factual situations that maybe will have you saying WTF? Maybe not. Nevertheless, in no particular order, this list seems to taunt me and I am fed up with them all. Enjoy:

01. Why is Guns ‘N Roses in The Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame? WTF?

02. Why did Paul Stanley and Gene Simmons hand over, on a silver platter, the characters of “Space Ace” and “The Cat” to Tommy Thayer and Eric Singer, respectively? WTF?

03. Why are IRON MAIDEN not in The Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame? WTF?

04. Why is Vince Neil gonna appear on the reality trash show: Celebrity Wife Swap? WTF?

05. Why did Judas Priest feel it was a grand idea to perform on American Idol, back on March 1st, 2011? WTF? Not to mention, performing with James Durbin? WTF again??

06. Why are Metallica ONLY following 26 people on Twitter, when 2.79 million people follow them on the same social network? WTF? WTF again?

07. What the F*CK is “Baby Metal”? WTF?

08. What was (former) AC/DC drummer Phil Rudd thinking? WTF?

09. Why hasn’t Poison released a new studio album of original songs in over 15 years? WTF?

10. Why are there people in the media and fans that keep sparking rumors about a PANTERA reunion with Zakk Wylde on guitar? NO guitarist can replace the late and legendary Dimebag Darrell in PANTERA. NO one. Let’s cut the shit already and grow the F*CK up. You know who you are. WTF?

On This Day In METAL History – April 26th… From MACHINE HEAD To HALESTORM

Posted in classic rock, Hard Rock, Heavy Metal, Music, rock music with tags , , , , , on April 26, 2015 by Metal Odyssey

Discografía Van Halen – 5150 (1986)

On April 26th, 1986Van Halen reached #1 on the Billboard 200 Albums Chart for the first time with their seventh studio album: 5150. This was Van Halen’s (or Van Hagar, if you like) first album with the dynamic Sammy Hagar as their vocalist. 5150 spent three weeks on top of this chart. By the way, this 5150 album stirs up some really cool and good-times memories for me! Whoa.

Judas Priest -

On this day in 1986 – Metal legends Judas Priest peaked at #17 on the Billboard 200 Albums Chart with their tenth studio album: Turbo. This album went on to sell one million (plus) copies in the United States, alone. By the way, this is my least favorite Judas Priest album and yet I do “like” it. The song Parental Guidance is featured on Turbo and it is one of the lamest Judas Priest songs ever recorded, in my Metal opinion. The title track is just plain strange. Whatever.

Halestorm - The Wild Life - promo album cover pic - 2015 - #HMO0526

On April 26th, 2015 – Pennsylvania’s very own Hard Rock ambassadors, HALESTORM, have their third studio album, Into The Wild Life, debuting at #5, on the Billboard Top 200 Albums Chart. Congratulations, HALESTORM! Yeah!

Aerosmith's Greatest Hits large promo album pic!

On this day in 2015Aerosmith’s Greatest Hits makes a return to the Billboard Top 200 Albums Chart, ranked at #151. This fantastic compilation of Aerosmith hits was originally released back in 1980, spending 44 non-consecutive weeks on this chart and peaking at #43. Folks, this album has spanned 4 decades of being a hot seller! Did someone say, timeless Hard Rock? Whoa and holy Metal!!

Machine Head - Bloodstone & Diamonds - promo cover pic - 2014

On April 26th, 2015 – The eighth studio album, Bloodstone & Diamonds, from the mighty MACHINE HEAD, is ranked at #33, on the iTunes Top 100 Heavy Metal Albums Chart. MACHINE HEAD kicks METAL ass like there’s no tomorrow, on this album, by the way. If you don’t own this MACHINE HEAD album, you are a closet Bay City Rollers fan. Whoa!

April 23, 2015, Philadelphia – Royal Thunder debut the video for Time Machine, from their recently released album, Crooked Doors, via Rolling Stone:

http://www.rollingstone.com/music/premieres/royal-thunders-mlny-parsonz-on-escaping-a-cult-touring-with-wilco-20150423.

The video was directed by J.P. Bradburn who also worked with the band on their video for “Blue.” NPR said of the song, “’Time Machine’ moves with the stubborn resolve of a tightrope walker on a windy day: The song heaves along with intertwining guitars and the soulful vocal of Parsonz, who seems more aware of her dynamic abilities than ever.”

The Atlanta-quartet is currently on a Southeastern tour with Wilco, playing this evening at the Bayou Music Center in Houston. Royal Thunder’s headlining tour kicks off May 28 in New Orleans and will include a brief run of shows with Halestorm and Rival Sons.

Crooked Doors was released earlier this month, with Stereogum calling the album “the hard rock equivalent of Fleetwood Mac’s Rumors.” Entertainment Weekly said Crooked Doors “leans on its substantial pop chops. Led Zeppelin - Backstage Pass - Atlanta - 1977 - promo pic

Above: A backstage pass to this 1977 Led Zeppelin concert at The Omni.

Stone Says, About Led Zeppelin: Anytime I happen across Led Zeppelin history, I get those good chills. I believe that without Led Zeppelin, the Hard Rock and Heavy Metal sounds we hear today would not be the same. Legendary guitarist Jimmy Page with his melodic (and heavy) mastery and unique expression of scales and chords has certainly penetrated the building blocks of widespread Rock and Heavy Music. The guitar playing of Jimmy Page, to this day, is always like fresh rain water falling from the heavens, in my Metal opinion.

Vocalist Robert Plant and Jimmy Page equally gave each Led Zeppelin song its own identity, while bassist John Paul Jones and (the late) drummer John Bonham’s less is more styles of play can never be duplicated and only imitated. Metal be thy name. – Stone

BEAUVOIR FREE “American Trash” – Studio Album Releasing First Week Of June, Via Frontiers Music Srl

American Trash - Beauvoir Free - promo pic - 2015 - Frontiers - MO041415

From Frontiers Music Srl:

BEAUVOIR FREE recreate the magic of Crown of Thorns debut on AMERICAN TRASH – out on Frontiers in June.

Frontiers Music Srl is excited to announce the release of AMERICAN TRASH, the hotly anticipated new album featuring Rock & Roll veterans Jean BEAUVOIR and Micki FREE, on June 3rd in Europe and June 7th in North America.

Best known as the driving force behind the legendary Crown of Thorns self-titled debut album in 1994, Jean Beauvoir and Micki Free’s collective credits read like a “who’s-who” Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, with a list of collaborations that includes the likes of the Ramones, KISS, Debbie Harry, Pretenders, John Waite, Lionel Richie, *NSYNC, Billy Gibbons of ZZ Top, Bill Wyman, Carlos Santana and Prince to name but a few.

The duo both coincidentally moved back to LA in 2003 and re-connected. They discussed joining forces again for a new project and after a few shows in Europe in 2013, a deal with Frontiers was inked for a brand new album to be recorded in 2014.

The result is American Trash, an album that shaped up as “the continuation of the BEAUVOIR FREE sound as the writing team for the Crown of Thorns debut,” explains Jean Beauvoir. “When we write together there really is this magic. We know we want killer guitar riffs and major melodic chorus… and this is what turns out in our songs, in Beauvoir Free style.”

All the new songs came out like “rocking-babies” in the BEAUVOIR FREE fold. “…And all represent the sound only Jean and I create together. The “inimitable” sound of BEAUVOIR FREE,” tells Micki Free. Joining forces once again, Jean and Micki can truly unleash the magic that they can only create when they write together, of that there is no doubt!

“We both feel this CD is some of the best work we have done, right up their next to the Crown of Thorns debut” concludes Jean. “We want to get out on the road and bring it to the fans. We receive a lot of enquires of when are you guys coming back out on tour and people telling us they can’t wait to hear the new material. Frankly we can’t wait for our fans to hear American Trash as well!”

Enjoy an EPK trailer of the album below:

On this day in 2015Van Halen’s new live 2-CD, Tokyo Dome In Concert, debuts on the Billboard Top 200 Albums Chart at #20. Why was such lame cover art chosen for this release? I just don’t know. You would expect that with the overpriced Van Halen concert tickets that are being sold, this legendary band could afford an artist with clever ideas for an album cover. Apparently not.

At least the EUROPE album cover (above) has imagery and cool photography to it that makes me pause to think.

JEFF BECK LIVE+ New Live Album Spanning The Legendary Guitarist’s Vast and Varied Career, Along With Two New Studio Tracks, Available May 5th

Posted in classic rock, Hard Rock, Music, rock music with tags , , , , , on April 9, 2015 by Metal Odyssey

Jeff Beck Live+ - promo album cover pic - 2015 - JBMIMO0115

LOS ANGELES – Jeff Beck earned raves last year for his spellbinding performances during the hugely successful double-bill tour with ZZ TOP. Fans can relive Beck’s thrilling guitar gymnastics from those shows with a new live album that touches on key eras from the legendary artist’s influential career. The album captures a snapshot of Jeff’s work in 2014, with two newly recorded studio tracks also included, his first new music since 2010’s Grammy®-winning Emotion & Commotion.

Packed with more than an hour of music, JEFF BECK LIVE+ will be available from Atco Records, an imprint of Rhino Entertainment, on May 5 for a list price of $18.98 (CD) and will also be available digitally. The album will arrive as Beck is in the midst of an East Coast solo tour, which includes newly added dates in May. This trek also features make-up dates from the same ZZ TOP tour this album was recorded during, before it was cut short due to an injury to ZZ TOP bassist Dusty Hill.

The 14 live performances on JEFF BECK LIVE+ were recorded at multiple venues in 2014 and feature Beck backed by his band: vocalist Jimmy Hall, bassist Rhonda Smith, drummer Jonathan Joseph and guitarist Nicolas Meier. The quintet explored Beck’s vast catalog—which stretches across five decades—with performances of “Morning Dew” (from Truth, 1968), “Superstition” (from Beck, Bogert, Appice, 1973), “Big Block” (from Jeff Beck’s Guitar Shop, 1989), as well as two Grammy-winning tracks: his cover of the Beatles’ “A Day In The Life” and “Hammerhead.”

LIVE + concludes with two new studio tracks: “Tribal” and “My Tiled White Floor,” with   guest vocals from Ruth Lorenzo and Veronica Bellino, respectively. These aggressive new songs mark Beck’s first studio recordings since 2010 and show a stark departure from the sound on his previous album as the guitarist continues to push the envelope of musical innovation, just as he has his entire career. These tracks are sure to whet the appetite of Beck fans as the guitarist prepares his 17th studio album, which is expected later this year.

Throughout his career, Beck has also proven to be a brilliant interpreter of other’s songs. This live album doesn’t disappoint with covers of “Danny Boy,” Jimi Hendrix’s “Little Wing,” Mahavishnu Orchestra’s “You Know You Know,” and Sam Cooke’s “A Change Is Gonna Come.”

Beck’s career took off in the mid-1960s, after replacing Eric Clapton as lead guitarist for The Yardbirds on the recommendation of his friend Jimmy Page. He played on several of the rock group’s hits, such as “Heart Full of Soul,” “Shapes of Things” and “Over Under Sideways Down.” Beck has been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame twice: once with The Yardbirds in 1992 and again as a solo artist in 2009. He has won numerous Grammy Awards, including two in 2011.
