ELMSFIRE – Signs To Massacre Records

Posted in Heavy Metal, heavy metal albums, heavy metal news, metal music, Music, Power Metal, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , , , , on December 23, 2011 by Metal Odyssey

ELMSFIRE are from Düsseldorf, Germany and have existed since 1999, having hit the stage for the first time in 2002.

Fritz, the band’s bassist, describes their music as Melodic Heavy Metal, which is influenced by Thrash and Power Metal. The songs are mostly about situations and emotions they’ve experienced.

The band’s name is based on the St. Elmo’s Fire, which is a weather phenomenon. The name ELMSFIRE represents the band, which is also full of energy.

Playing countless gigs and dealing with several lineup changes, ELMSFIRE have already recorded two demos and an EP.

“Thieves Of The Sun”, the first full-length album of ELMSFIRE, is going to be released on February 24, 2012!

SCORPIONS ‘COMEBLACK’ – Heavy Metal Legends Do It Their Way, On Album Of Covers & Re-Recordings

Posted in classic rock, cover songs, Heavy Metal, heavy metal albums, heavy metal news, metal music, Music, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , , , , on December 20, 2011 by Metal Odyssey

SCORPIONS COMEBLACK – The Scorpions latest CD release, Comeblack, is a combination of  seven re-recorded classics from their legendary catalog of albums along with six Classic Rock cover songs. I realize there are fans who don’t applaud when a band makes an album of cover songs and I understand that. Personally, I enjoy hearing a band covering other band’s songs. I really am thrilled with Comeblack for more than half of this album is, essentially, the Scorpions covering themselves!

In my opinion, some of the re-recorded songs the Scorpions did for Comeblack are actually better than their own originals. I point to the first three songs on Comeblack to state my point: Rhythm Of Love, No One Like You and The Zoo. All three songs are outstanding Scorpions originals, yet on Comeblack each of these mentioned songs has a harder and edgier zeal to them, which I really dig, especially on one of my all-time favorites The Zoo. The harder energy on these three cover songs are so good and breathe some new life into them.

Unfortunately, I can’t state the same for the new versions of Rock You Like A Hurricane and Winds Of Change. I feel the original versions are superior to their re-recorded selves on Comeblack. Then again, these two songs are this iconic band’s biggest hits, so I imagine it would be almost impossible to improve on them. Blackout and Still Loving You are done well and both are very solid re-recordings. If there is one thing I would have done differently on this half of Comeblack, I would have included some of their lesser-known hits like Big City Nights, Alien Nation and In Trance and re-recorded them with the same updated heaviness.

Now for the cover songs. First of all, I find this a very interesting collection of songs to cover. For example, I was never a big fan of the song Tainted Love by the New Wave/Post-Punk band Soft Cell. Actually, I find it a very annoying song. Therefore, even before I heard this cover version by the Scorpions I was preparing to be disappointed. Man, was I surprised! The Scorpions came up huge here. What a terrific job the Scorpions did in creating what I would call a wuss of a song and transforming it into Metal!

Children of The Revolution and Tin Soldier are solidly done. Across The Universe is probably my biggest complaint, in terms of song selection for Comeblack. I can’t say I’m a big fan of this song. All Day And All Of The Night packs a good and Hard Rockin’ punch that I believe The Kinks would praise.

This brings me to the final song. The Scorpions end Comeblack with grand style! What do you get when you combine Klaus Meine, Metal guitar riffs by guitar legends Rudolf Schenker and Matthias Jabs and a song written by The Rolling Stones? This is Scott Coverdale’s “Song Of The Year”: Ruby Tuesday. I can’t begin to tell you, just how much I love this cover version of Ruby Tuesday. After listening to this song over and over again, I’ve come to the conclusion that Ruby Tuesday was meant to be a Metal song and we’ve been delivered just that… 40 years later.

* Scorpions – Comeblack was released in November of 2011 on Sony Music.

ORANGE GOBLIN – New Track Premiere Brought To You By Noisecreep

Posted in Hard Rock, Heavy Metal, heavy metal albums, heavy metal news, metal music, Music, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , , on December 15, 2011 by Metal Odyssey

Today Noisecreep premieres “Red Tide Rising,” the opening track from ORANGE GOBLIN‘s forthcoming A Eulogy For The Damned full-length. Set for North American release on February 14, 2012 via Candlelight Records, A Eulogy For The Damned is the band’s seventh studio album (and first for Candlelight). The ten-track offering was recorded at The Animal Farm studio in South London, UK, produced and engineered by Jamie Dodd and mastered by two-time Grammy-nominated Pink Floyd engineer Andy Jackson at Tube Mastering.

Commented vocalist Ben Ward of the track: “‘Red Tide Rising’ was actually the first song we wrote for the new album and the main riff was written by [guitarist] Joe [Hoare] as far back as 2008. We all knew that this would be the lead song on the album as soon as we wrote it; it felt kind of special and it set the tempo and feel for the whole record. It’s one that we all had a lot of input on so it’s a real band effort and definitely wasn’t rushed. The ending must’ve been changed half a dozen times or so until we were all satisfied! It’s a very typical ORANGE GOBLIN song and I’m confident that it’s going to be a live favorite for many years to come. We’ve actually played it at the last few shows and despite no one knowing it, it got a great response. Lyrically, the song is a tribute to my fascination with the works of horror writer H.P Lovecraft. The theme centers around the rising of Cthulhu from the deep and the ultimate destruction of Earth and mankind. It was fun for me to use my imagination and be able to write about the Elder gods and the end of the world. I think it’ll make a great Heavy Metal video! The title was something I made up and we considered calling the album ‘Red Tide Rising’ for a while. It’s pretty self-explanatory with the idea of the oceans turning to blood and the beasts taking over for the dawn of a new dark age! We are all very proud of this track and honored to preview it with Noisecreep/AOL. With our annual Christmas show looming on Saturday, now seems like the perfect time to unleash this beast on the world!”

LIZZY BORDEN – MENACE TO SOCIETY

(METAL BLADE RECORDS)

Here’s a legendary Metal band that helped define our Metal community as we know and love it today. A Metal band that’s led by their lead vocalist of the same name: LIZZY BORDEN. You want to listen to a real Metal album? Then go buy or trade for their 1986 sophomore release: Menace To Society. It’s a Metal classic. It’s an essential Metal album in the history of Metal music.

If you are salivating for a potent dose of real Metal, this album will kick your Metal lovin’ ass to kingdom come. No, not the band Kingdom Come. (Lenny Wolf and his band F’n Rocks by the way). Um, back to LIZZY BORDEN. Look, their entire catalog kicks monumental Metal ass… I’m only recommending Menace To Society for the simple fact that I can’t stop playing it for the last few months.

BLOODDYY MAARRRYYY!

Call it Menace To Society dependence, call it what you will. I’m only calling out this tremendous Metal album of yesteryear to bring attention to what quality, real Metal sounds like. Here’s my review for Menace To Society: it kicks F’n Metal ass. Okay? Now, if you want to treat yourself right with a Metal purchase, I’m strongly suggesting you go out and get Menace To Society and thank the Metal Gods that LIZZY BORDEN created this album and are still kickin’ Metal ass to this very day. Christmas Album Covers – Let’s Have Some Fun Looking At ‘Em!

Posted in christmas, christmas albums, christmas rock albums, classic rock, classic rock albums, Hard Rock, Heavy Metal, heavy metal albums, heavy metal news, metal music, metal odyssey, Music, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , , , on December 3, 2011 by Metal Odyssey

Christmas Album Covers – I love the Christmas holiday. I dig giving more than receiving too. Really, I do. That is why I am giving you this list of Christmas album covers to laugh at, talk about and at times… gaze at. Maybe this list will encourage you to buy one of these Christmas albums? I dunno. The main Metal objective I have here is to have fun. So, without any further ado, let’s get the Christmas album cover party started!

Rockin’ Little Christmas

Since when is pile-driving your wife or girlfriend a “thing to do” at Christmas? Whoa.

MAYBE THIS CHRISTMAS

Maybe what? Maybe the power goes out on Christmas day? Maybe Bigfoot finally gets his beef jerky? At least this is a funny Christmas album cover. Okay, semi-funny.

Michael Buble’ – Christmas

I find this cover for Michael Buble’ Christmas to be rather, well, uncomfortable. You see, if I saw a dude in my neighborhood acting like this, I’d call the cops. A “stalking vibe” just screams out at me here. It looks like Michael is trying to squeeze out a last second fart, before he enters wherever he is going.

A VERY SHE & HIM CHRISTMAS

What was She & Him thinking here? They didn’t need to over-cool a cool look like that, to the point where it is not even cool at all. At least I think this cover is funny, in a non-cool way.

Classic Rockin’ Christmas

Whoa. I don’t trust that face on this Santa. A mean looking Santa. To me, it looks like this Santa had a bad day with the elves and now he’s looking for revenge. I’m just glad I don’t have anyone living nearing me who looks like this dude. By the way, I wouldn’t trust any egg nog he may be offering either.

Classic Rockin’ Christmas

Now this is the Classic Rockin’ Christmas I’m talkin’ about.

BOWLING FOR SOUP! MERRY FLIPPIN’ CHRISTMAS VOLUME I

Ha, ha, ha, ha! That’s so righteous man! Ahem. Whatever.

WE WISH YOU A HAIRY CHRISTMAS

Um, We Wish You A Hairy Christmas. Metal Odyssey is NOT supposed to be XXX here. I’m just the messenger, so please excuse me as I bust out in laughter from this Christmas album title. Yeah, yeah, yeah, I know. This is a compilation album of Christmas songs from a bunch of famous Hair Metal bands. Still, give me a Metal break.

WE WISH YOU A HAIRY CHRISTMAS

Now, this is a much more classier “look” than the previous We Wish You A Hairy Christmas album cover. The weird, plastic reindeer and huge candy cane are what makes this cover so damn memorable.

HEAVY METAL CHRISTMAS

Yes! This Christmas album cover is my favorite! Why? Cause it has “Heavy Metal” in it’s title and those Iron Maiden “like” fonts are the best! Plus, I can’t tell a Metal lie here… I’ve always been a HUGE admirer of Christmas decorative bows. Metal be thy name.

MERRY CHRISTMAS TO ALL AND TO ALL A METAL NIGHT.

RAGE – Artwork, Track List and Details On The New Album – 21!

Posted in Heavy Metal, heavy metal albums, heavy metal news, metal music, metal odyssey, Music, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , , , on December 3, 2011 by Metal Odyssey

It’s heavy, fast, extreme – but at the same time virtuosic and melodic: the new RAGE album “21” (OUT: 24th of February 2012). Once again the CD was produced in the “Twilight Hall Studios” in Krefeld, Germany by Victor Smolski and Charlie Bauerfeind.

Peavy, vocalist and founder of the band, explains: “It may have already got about that our new album will come off pretty heavy. We’ve been bubbling over with creativity and it was huge fun to work on the songs – as always, it was real teamwork. Working with such fantastic musicians like Victor and André is great”.

At the past weekend, the CD was presented to an international group of journalists which were gobsmacked and delighted at the same time.

21 sounds harsher and more virtuosic. The waiting time will be darn hard”, states Tobias Blum of Rock Hard Germany. Andrea Vignati of Italian Metal Hammer is even more enthusiastic: “This is a milestone for Rage’s future”.

The artwork of “21” was created by Felipe Machado (BLIND GUARDIAN, RHAPSODY OF FIRE u.a.) and represents the power RAGE are radiating in the year 2012.

The following tracks can be found on the CD:

House Wins

Twenty One

Forever Dead

Feel My Pain

Serial Killer

Psycho Terror

Destiny

Death Romantic

Black And White

Concrete Wall

From March on, RAGE will be on tour under the slogan “Metal Firestorm“ together with their label mates COMMUNIC as well as TYR.

Metal Odyssey’s Top Ten METAL Songs Of 2011

Posted in Heavy Metal, heavy metal albums, heavy metal news, heavy metal songs, metal music, metal odyssey, Music, rock music, rock music news, Thrash Metal with tags , , , , , , , , on December 1, 2011 by Metal Odyssey

Metal Odyssey’s Top Ten Metal Songs of 2011 – My name is Stone and I listen to Metal. I write about Metal. I live for Metal. On this December 1st of 2011, I present to you the Top Ten Metal Songs that left the biggest impression on me during 2011. These ten Metal songs will always maintain a lasting impact on me. With the remaining month of December left, I could not foresee any one song being replaced on this list. My Metal decisions cannot be swayed. Before this list begins, I have included a Metal song as an Honorary Mention:

THE RODS – The Code (Featuring Ronnie James Dio)

(Niji Entertainment)

David “Rock” Feinstein has given an admirable tribute to his late and legendary cousin Ronnie James Dio with the addition of this song on THE RODS 2011 release: Vengeance. I remember buying this CD in the early Summer and being ecstatic that Ronnie James Dio was singing lead on The Code. It’s amazing how strong a song can come across to me and it’s due to the timeless vocals of Ronnie James Dio.

Ronnie sounds like the Metal icon he always was and shall forever be on The Code, with the spirit of Traditional Metal being swirled about by THE RODS. A double fist to the air vibe that came over me, as I listened to The Code for the first time, felt so damn cool for me. I’m certain I’m not alone in how I feel about this song either. Rest in peace, Ronnie James Dio.

#10

FAIR TO MIDLAND – Musical Chairs

(eOne Music)

Why I dig Fair To Midland so damn much is no one really knows what genre of Metal they really are. Alternative Metal? Check. Extreme Metal? Check. Um, Melodic Metal? Yup. To embrace this band’s sound is to accept the fact that these guys love music and know how to mix-it-up with Metal splendor. Musical Chairs from their Arrows & Anchors album is a sensational listen into what Modern Metal will sound like in five years. Fair To Midland can be considered… ahead of their time.

#9

KATANA – Rebel Ride

(Listenable Records)

From Sweden, comes KATANA. At approximately 2:54 long, Rebel Ride is an unmistakable Metal ride to hear! This song is short and gets to the Metal point, with duo guitars driving this song, coupled with its pumped-up power vibes that take you to a psyche-you-out level of Metal enlightenment. Rebel Ride is heard on the outstanding 2011 debut album from KATANA: Heads Will Roll.

#8

PENTAGRAM – Call The Man

(Metal Blade Records)

Bobby Liebling and PENTAGRAM returned on Metal Blade Records in 2011, with Last Rites. I wrote back on August 23rd: “Listening to Call The Man and this entire album is like getting psyched-out by a late night thunderstorm, there’s just no other way for me to explain it”. Doom pioneers = PENTAGRAM. Metal be thy name.

#7

SARAH JEZEBEL DEVAThe Corruption Of Mercy

(Listenable Records)

The title track from Sarah Jezebel Deva’s sophomore studio album The Corruption Of Mercy is hauntingly soothing, Gothic and never fails to mesmerize me. Is it Sarah’s vocals that casts such a magical Metal spell upon me? Yes. Yes again. Oh, her band plays exquisite Metal too. I’ve heard my share of female fronted bands in Metal and Sarah Jezebel Deva is one of the best at what she does in 2011. Take that to the Metal bank and tell ’em Stone sent you.

#6

SCHEEPERS – Saints Of The Rock

(Frontiers Records)

What would a Metal Odyssey Top Ten METAL song list of 2011 be without Ralf Scheepers? I wasn’t gonna be the one to tell Ralf he didn’t make the list. Instead, Ralf Scheepers is spotlighted at #6 with Saints Of The Rock from his star-studded solo album: SCHEEPERS. Nuthin’ beats a Heavy Metal anthem and nuthin’ beats a kick-ass Heavy Metal anthem. Saints Of The Rock has kicked my Metal lovin’ ass since the first time I’ve heard it. So let it be Metal written, so let it be Metal told.

#5

SPEED\KILL/HATE No Remorse

(HAMMERFIST RECORDS)

It was a close call with determining this selection. You see, SPEED\KILL/HATE have ten Thrash songs on their debut album, Out For Blood, that are each capable of tearing your Metal soul apart, while having you exclaim: Thank you sirs, may I please have more of your Extreme Thrash Metal Assault delivered upon me? Lyrically, No Remorse says it all about the assholes in life that think they rule you. Intense isn’t the word for this song. Instead, F’n intense to the Thrash Metal melting point is how I sum up this song best.

#4

SINISTER REALM – The Crystal Eye

(Shadow Kingdom Records)

From the greatest Metal city in Pennsylvania known as Allentown, there is a Metal band that the world should brace themselves for. This Metal band is: SINISTER REALM. Traditional Metal, such as the title track from The Crystal Eye, has become a necessary Metal nutrient for my Metal hungry ears. A Metal song that takes me back to those days of long ago, days when I felt invincible. That is how a great Metal song can make me feel and I like that.

#3

ANTHRAX – Fight ‘Em ‘Till You Can’t

(MEGAFORCE RECORDS)

After 8 years of waiting for a new Anthrax album, Worship Music is released in 2011 with Joey Belladonna at the mic! Yes Virgina, there is a Thrashin’ Claus and it’s Anthrax! Fight ‘Em ‘Till You Can’t became my favorite song from Worship Music and it psyches-me-out beyond belief. This song defines what I always loved about vintage Anthrax: speed, more speed, guitar driven, Charlie Benante going Metal Thrashin’ Mad on drums, gang vocals and Joey Belladonna. What else can I say?

#2

HEMOPTYSIS – M.O.D.

(Rock It Up Records)

Any regular visitor to Metal Odyssey knows by now that Stone supports HEMOPTYSIS. Why do I have this band on a Metal pedestal? Due to the clear Metal fact that Masaki Murashita (guitarist/vocalist) has his band running on precise Metal cylinders.

It is 2011 and new chapters of Metal, Thrash Metal and Death-Thrash are at my doorstep. HEMOPTYSIS is leading the Metal charge and I’m on board for the F’n Metal ride. M.O.D. defines the speed and extreme sound of this band’s brand of Thrash Metal. If you haven’t picked up and listened to Misanthropic Slaughter from HEMOPTYSIS yet, you absolutely must.

#1

MORBID ANGEL – I Am Morbid

(Season of Mist)

When it comes to choosing my #1 Metal song of 2011, I take it very, very, seriously. The #1 Metal song has to be the crème de la crème of all the Metal songs I’ve listened to all year. This song MUST take me to Metal heights that I can’t explain away. I Am Morbid is that #1 Metal song for me. “We stand invincible not just a dream” and “Tear down the obstacles this is our day” are real Metal lyrics to me.

Triumphant and yet defiant, I Am Morbid speaks of stepping on the enemy. Defeat those who obstruct your path to success is what I hear in this song. I Am Morbid is leading… not following. A Metal anthem that picked me up and carried me off in 2011, while I raised Metal horns to the sky.

LONG LIVE METAL.

MASS – Louis St. August Interview: Reflecting On The 1985 “Do You Love Me” (Music Video) & “New Birth” Album

Posted in classic rock, Hard Rock, Heavy Metal, heavy metal albums, heavy metal videos, interviews, metal odyssey, Music, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , , , , , on November 5, 2011 by Metal Odyssey

MASS – Louis St. August – It all started back in 1984, when MASS released their self-titled EP and garnered the widespread attention of radio stations, record companies and of course their new-found fans. In 1985, this Boston, Massachusetts originated band was signed to RCA Records and their first full-length album, New Birth, was released upon the Hard Rock and Heavy Metal world. New Birth catapulted MASS onto the Billboard charts and MTV came knocking on their door. The single released from New Birth was Do You Love Me and this song became a successful music video within the coveted MTV rotation.

Caught somewhere between the positive vibes of Stryper and their very own brand of melodic heaviness, coupled with credibility at every angle, MASS did exit the 80’s leaving behind 3 studio albums and their historic EP as a reminder of greater things to come. MASS was then, as they are now, a Heavy Metal band that glistens with accessibility without compromising their hard and heavy sound.

Louis St. August – 2011

MASS is still Rockin’ in 2011, their fifth full-length, Heavy Metal achievement and critically acclaimed Sea Of Black was released in 2010. With their best work existing in the present, reflecting on where it all began for MASS is something Louis St. August embraces and is understandably quite proud of. As the old saying goes, “times were different back then” and 1985 was no exception, as founding member and lead vocalist Louis St. August will reveal in this exclusive Metal Odyssey interview.

Stone: Do You Love Me is a memorable song from the New Birth album. What was the process of choosing this song for a music video?

Louis: It was solely RCA records idea of making and pushing the Do You love Me video first as we felt it was a poor representation of what the band was really about. We wanted to go with something a bit heavier like Too far Gone or Crying Alone. But the label insisted and thought a power ballad would open doors up for us and that radio would pick up the song a lot quicker. They told us the second video would be the heavier one which never did come to be.

Looking back at it now It’s kind of funny because the very first script the video production team wrote for the Do you love me video was actually turned down by RCA records because they felt it was too sexy and would get banned from MTV and other video stations. The script only calling for a Catholic girls school bus breaking down in some dark alley, when the girls all got out of the bus dressed up in their little catholic school dress’s knocked on our rehearsal door only to come in and start dancing seductively and falling in love with the song and band. Very mild and tamed I must say compared to the videos we see today. (Laughs). But that’s the early eighties for you.

Stone: Where was this video filmed?

Louis: The video was filmed in an abandoned warehouse in Manhattan, New York. It took two days to film it. (Film not video), that’s why it has that grainy look to it. I couldn’t believe it took 48 straight hours to film, only to have it edited down to a 3 minute and 20 second song. (Laughs). The video cost RCA records $50,000 something that would cost $5,000 to $8,000 today.

MASS – That Was Yesterday!

Stone: How difficult or easy was it to get Do You Love Me on MTV? How psyched were you guys to get that exposure?

Louis: It was not difficult at all with such a big label like RCA behind us. MTV execs were actually at the shooting of the video and approached our management at the time to see if they would agree to let MTV make the Do You Love Me video an exclusive premier for MTV. But our management said NO because they wanted to share it with the U68’s,V66’s video stations of the world. A big mistake in my eyes for we would have gained much more exposure had they agreed to this and received “heavy rotation” play instead of the “1ight rotation” we received on MTV.

We were very excited the first time it aired on MTV. Just like the first time you hear your song on the radio you never forget that feeling. After that it seemed like every time you put the TV on or the radio on you would hear your song. The phone never stopped ringing after that. And still hasn’t. (Laughs).

Stone: Were there any aggravating and/or funny moments you want to share while filming “Do You Love Me”?

Louis: We just simply had a blast making it, hanging with all the hired extras and crew. We even put our road manager (Gino) at the beginning of the video along with our stage manager (Laurie). We also included our manager & lawyer towards the end (carrying the food trays). Although it was extremely exhausting we were just running on pure adrenaline and tons of laughs and good times.

MASS – In The Present!

Stone: As you look back on the New Birth album now, what fond memories does it stir up?

Louis: There are so many but here are just a few for me. We all moved in to the studio in beautiful Bearsville New York. The whole band actually lived in a huge barn. Our equipment was set up downstairs in the living room while all our beds were upstairs in the loft. We would work with our producer Tony Platt (Led Zep /Cheap Trick, etc) during the day on preproduction stuff in the barn for two weeks before moving into the studio to start recording. When I had free time, I would ride my mountain bike through the beautiful town and hills, while enjoying the fresh air and star studied night skies.

During the evenings, the band would get together and hang with Joe Lynn Turner and his band mates and go out for dinner at various places. Joe and his band mates were there recording an album as well with producer (Roy Thomas Baker/Queen). We had a lot of fun and many a food fight at some of the top-notch restaurants in the area, where we would sometimes be asked to leave. (Laughs).

Our girlfriends, wives, would come down a few weekends during our 8 week stay and enjoy the surroundings as well as the music we were making. My wife at the time was pregnant with my first child so it was special for me when we decided to call the album New Birth.

CORONATUS – Releasing on November 18th, 2011, on Massacre Records, is the new studio album from the German Gothic Metal band Coronatus: Terra Incognita. Below is the music video for Fernes Land and I’m digging it a Metal ton. It’s those beautiful vocals from those two beautiful gals that seals the deal for me! Mareike Makosch (Alto Voice) and Lady Ada Flechtner (Rock Soprano) come across as relaxed and ultra talented with this duet. The guitar solo kicks some serious ass too.

This is one fantastic band to keep your ears out for and support! Listen and watch the music video below for Fernes Land, hopefully you might dig it as much as I do.

* The North American release date for Terra Incognita is December 6th, 2011.

JUDAS PRIEST – THE CHOSEN FEW: Greatest Hits Picked By Heavy Music Legends Releasing October 11, 2011

Posted in Heavy Metal, heavy metal albums, heavy metal news, metal music, metal odyssey, Music, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , , , , , , on October 7, 2011 by Metal Odyssey

JUDAS PRIESTThe Chosen Few is a 17 song compilation album spanning the discography of the legendary Judas Priest and is releasing on October 11, 2011, via Sony/Legacy. In Metal essence, this is a “greatest hits” album which does salute Judas Priest and their unparalleled Metal career. Yes, Judas Priest does have many compilations/greatest hits albums out there, I agree. The story behind The Chosen Few is that all 17 songs have been “chosen” by an impressive group of legendary musicians of Hard Rock and Heavy Metal.

Oops. Here goes Stone straying off topic a bit here, with the “legendary” musicians who chose songs for The Chosen Few. I had to go and call these musicians “legendary”, now didn’t I? Chris Jericho chose a song and he is cool, still, he has a ways more to go before I call him a legendary musician. Do I consider Randy Blythe of Lamb Of God legendary? I’ve got an answer for you: yes. Yes again.

In my Metal opinion, this is a grand collection of Judas Priest songs, a collection that will prove to be essential for those fans who do not own every Judas Priest album. I will take a pass on buying The Chosen Few for the time being, with money being tight I would much rather pick up new studio albums or vintage releases that I already don’t own. Buying The Chosen Few when I already own the songs just isn’t practical for me. Regardless of my passing over on The Chosen Few, I would recommend new fans of Judas Priest and those fans who don’t own all of the songs to buy it, it looks like a winner to me.

Two Judas Priest classics, that I would have chosen for The Chosen Few are: Hot Rockin’ (Point Of Entry – 1981) and Some Heads Are Gonna Roll (Defenders Of The Faith – 1984). What Judas Priest song(s) would you have chosen for this album? I believe there are 16 studio albums that Judas Priest has their legendary name on, so choosing a favorite song or two is both easy and difficult at the same time for me. I would have to say my favorite Judas Priest album is Stained Class from 1978. Okay, which is my favorite Judas Priest song ever? ACCEPT “chose” my favorite Judas Priest song for The Chosen Few: Exciter. This solid as steel Metal song is from Stained Class too.

Judas Priest is a Metal band that steamrolled the New Wave Of British Heavy Metal into my brain, so many years ago. I honestly couldn’t vision a world of Heavy Metal without their presence and influence. Once Judas Priest are a retired band, I will miss the living Metal daylights out of them. Metal be thy name.

Check out the track listing below for The Chosen Few. The musicians who chose each respective song are listed as well.

Diamonds And Rust (1977) – chosen by Joe Elliot (Def Leppard)

Dissident Aggressor (1977) – chosen by Steve Vai

Exciter (1978)- chosen by Accept

Beyond The Realms Of Death (1978) – chosen by Lars Ulrich (Metallica)

Delivering The Goods (1979) – chosen by Kerry King (Slayer)

The Green Manalishi (with the Two-Pronged Crown) (1979) – chosen by Randy Blythe (Lamb of God) & David Coverdale (Whitesnake)

The Ripper (1979) – chosen by Ozzy Osbourne

Victim Of Changes (1979) – chosen by James Hetfield (Metallica)

Breaking The Law (1980) – chosen by Lemmy (Motorhead)

Rapid Fire (1980) – chosen by Vinnie Paul (Pantera & Hell Yeah)

Grinder (1980) – chosen by Zakk Wylde (Black Label Society)

Living After Midnight (1980) – chosen by Alice Cooper & Geezer Butler (Black Sabbath)

Screaming For Vengeance (1982) – chosen by Slash (Guns n Roses)

You’ve Got Another Thing Coming (1982) – chosen by Klaus Meine (Scorpions) & Corey Taylor (Slipknot)

The Sentinel (1984) – chosen by Chris Jericho

Turbo Lover (1986) – chosen by Jonathan Davis (Korn)

Painkiller (1990) – chosen by Joe Satriani
