This critically acclaimed album, 13, was released on June 11th, 2013 in the U.S. and is an incredible offering of Metal from the founders of our beloved genre. Black Sabbath may be minus the legendary Bill Ward for 13, still, I am overly impressed by the total Sabbathian package of darkness and old school Doom vibes that blanket my senses each time I listen to 13.

As for the production of 13, regardless of any slight fuzz looming about, (which I find old school anyways), the powerful vocals of Ozzy Osbourne coupled with the unparalleled Doom riffage from Tony Iommi transcends any flaws that “some” critics believe to exist. Geezer Butler shines once again as well, proving to me he truly is among the kings of Heavy Metal bassists of both past and present.

I give Brad Wilk so much credit for accepting a challenge to fill the shoes of the legendary Bill Ward. A world-class drummer in his own right, Brad Wilk excels on 13! It’s damn right heroic of Brad’s ability to transform his musicianship to sound so amazingly Sabbath-like. (If any other drummers sat in for the 13 sessions, than I’m not aware of it and please excuse my not being informed).

How much input did Rick Rubin have in mixing and mastering 13 I do not know. I’ll say this much, Rick Rubin surpassed my expectations on 13; due to my anxious thoughts he would turn this album into an overly pasted-together and satin-polished Death Magnetic. 13 sounds much more organic than that, thank God.

Doom Metal was forged and pioneered by Black Sabbath. Stoner Metal spun-off from this iconic band’s Metal atmosphere of sound. 13 is a resounding reminder of just that. This is one Black Sabbath album I never thought would happen and it’s here. Go out and get it and be thankful we still have this band around to make our Metal world that much more prolific.

God isn’t dead; nor is Black Sabbath.

NIGHTBITCH BIO:

NIGHTBITCH formed in the summer of 2009 when Ipsissimus guitarist Ryan “His Emissary” Adams sought an outlet to reconcile his late-bloomer discovery of Ritchie Blackmore’s majestic emanations with his obsession for sleazy 70’s occult / exploitation films and plagiarized Danzig riffs. Adams soon hooked up with celebrated Doom Metal vocalist Phil Swanson (Hour of 13, Seamount, Vestal Claret and many more) through mutual friend Bill Connnolly (whose No Visible Scars label would expose the world to NIGHTBITCH via the Sex and Magic cassette). The band was quickly rounded out by the formidable rhythm section of longtime friends and veteran CT musicians Chris Taylor (Kingdom of Sorrow) and Mark Else (De Omega) on drums and bass, respectively.

In September 2010, after gigs opening for such heavyweights as Pentagram, Black Pyramid, Earthride and Midnight, NIGHTBITCH traveled to Dublin, Ireland as the back-up band for Hour of 13’s live debut at the Dublin Doom Day, playing its own gig as a part of the warm-up festivities. The band brought with it the Sex and Magic cassette, which would sell out of all 100 copies within a month of its release.

Upon returning from Dublin, NIGHTBITCH and Swanson amicably parted ways and Taylor assumed vocal duties. In December, Cyclopean Records issued Sex and Magic on vinyl limited to 350 copies, which also sold out in one month’s time. Analog formats exhausted, Sex and Magic has since entered the digital realm via Austria’s Psychedoomelic Records, where it counts the godly Reverend Bizarre among its labelmates.

With Taylor at the helm, NIGHTBITCH has composed eleven infernal odes to comprise its full-length debut and is set to release the Chainmaker EP to showcase the depravity to follow. Chainmaker contains the originals “Chainmaker” and “Disrober”, closing with a reverent cover of Deep Purple’s “Into the Fire”. It will be released as a one-sided vinyl 12″ by Ear One Productions in a limited edition of 250.

The band is currently courting distributors for both releases as well as labels interested in the full-length, all while continuing to play out, spreading its Hell-ordained gospel of traditional heavy fucking metal… riffs and sleaze with a sensual, occult bent.

It’s a celebration of Metal.”

“Definitely energy, power and attitude…Gotta make a statement, you know?” stated drummer Scott Palmer in an interview with Slayed In Oregon.

Guitarist and founding member Robert Williams added “We were able to bring a heavier, meaner, darker sound.”

Phoenix, Arizona’s Black ‘n’ Roll Death miscreants TOAD (Take Over And Destroy) are readying to unleash their long-anticipated Endless Night LP. Featuring five cold, cavernous, groove-strewn hymns of chaos and disillusion, the initial scripting process of Endless Night was plagued by various bouts of misfortune including lost rehearsal spaces, run-ins with the law, crippling illness and death. However through perpetual negativity came a primal, disordered source of motivation. Indeed, the malevolent energy captured on Endless Night has inarguably resulted in the band’s most sincerely powerful and cryptically profound output to date.

Endless Night was captured by returning producer/engineer Bob Hoag at Flying Blanket Recording in Mesa, Arizona who worked with the band previously on their mammoth Rotten Tide EP and offers up a strikingly grim cover by Sean R. Williams (Animetalphysical) viewable HERE.

Comments the band in a collective statement:  “Night time evokes conflicting reactions within the human psyche. As primitive man witnessed the sunset he felt intrigued and thrilled, but most importantly he felt afraid. His terror served to protect him from the chaos and danger of the unknown. The same animalistic fear of the dark remains within us today, though it has migrated into the subconscious. Endless Night exploits both our aversion and attraction to the darkness. Recorded over the course of a full moon and All Hallow’s Eve of 2012, these songs swirl and creep with sinister melodies, then strike with violent hooks. The album is simultaneously exciting and permeating with horror. Our ancestors relied upon the warmth and light of fire to guard them at night. This record captures the dread of that fire being extinguished forever.”

Fans of Denver Thrashers HAVOK are beginning to feel the growing excitement for the approaching North American release date of the band’s third full-length, Unnatural Selection. The album’s lead single, “Give Me Liberty… Or Give Me Death,” impacted metal radio earlier this week; the only single to land on CMJ’s Loud Rock “Most Added” report. Sirius/XM Radio plus Syracuse’s WAQX, Baltimore’s WIYY, and Northern New Jersey metal powerhouse WSOU, among others, are a few of the key early supporters of the single.

SATAN are a heavy metal band originating from Newcastle, England in 1980, known as part of the NWOBHM movement. Though generally obscure throughout their career, the band is considered influential for playing a form of proto-thrash metal that was fairly advanced by the standards of the early 1980s. SATAN remained inactive until re-assembling for a one-off gig at Germany’s Wacken Open Air in 2004, and finally reunited in their original Court In The Act line-up for 2011’s Keep It True festival. The band performed at several European festivals in 2011 and 2012 and have announced more festival shows and new album for 2013, to mark the 30th anniversary of their debut release.

Who could possibly argue that Classic Rock wasn’t the meat and potatoes for the evolution of Heavy Metal? I sure can’t. Rob Zombie took this Grand Funk Railroad Rock classic and Zombiefied it to a level of unthinkable Metal bliss and I’m flying high again! I guess when you get Rob Zombie and John 5 together with Piggy D and Ginger Fish, grand Metal miracles happen on an almost too common basis. In other words: Rob Zombie RULES.

I could have easily targeted Venomous Rat Regeneration Vendor as Stone’s METAL Pick Of The Day; only that’s for… another METAL day. Now, if only the corporate lame-O’s over at The Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame would induct Grand Funk Railroad into their prestigious society. What am I thinking? American Midwest Rock N’ Roll isn’t supposed to exist in that building in Cleveland. Shame on me for even dreaming like that. Metal be thy name.

WITCH CROSS – Honestly, the Metal comeback story of the legendary WITCH CROSS is one for the METAL ages. Who would think this Metal band would ever return? And return they have! With a Metal vengeance! With their (also legendary) peers SATAN making a Metal comeback as well in 2013, I couldn’t be more overflowing with Metal glee!

What’s so remarkably impressive about this WITCH CROSS Metal comeback are their (obvious) connection to their fans, their wooing same fans at various European Metal festivals and the lead single, Demon In The Mirror, from their forthcoming NEW studio album: Axe To Grind.

Metal as my witness, Demon In The Mirror has made me feel like a Metal kid again; making me feel the way I did when I first heard such classic Metal songs as: You’ve Got Another Thing Comin’ (Judas Priest), Denim And Leather (Saxon), Power (Rainbow) and Bark At The Moon (Ozzy). Why those particular songs? Call it Metal imbedding in my (very own and personal) Metal soul and call it delicious Metal elements all coming together.

Demon In The Mirror exhibits elevated Metal vibes of profound substantial levels, is Old School and has a quasi-energetic outro (courtesy of guitarist Mike Kock) that (to me) rivals what the incredible Jake E. Lee had accomplished so brilliantly with the song classic Bark At The Moon. Kev Moore was born to sing Metal. This band was born to play Metal. For me, Witch Cross has created a thunder strike of Metal bliss with Demon In The Mirror.

Listen to and watch Demon In The Mirror below. If it doesn’t blow you away, your listening to the wrong genre of music. Metal be thy name.

Philadelphia – Baroness have added an additional leg to their previously announced Yellow & Green North American Tour, with a number of Midwest and West Coast dates including a stop at Bumbershoot.

The band has also released a candid interview clip where they share their thoughts on the Summer 2012 tour bus accident and reveal the first rehearsal footage with Nick Jost (bass) and Sebastian Thomson (drums). Watch below:

Baroness has a full summer ahead of them with their headlining dates kicking off on May 24 at Union Transfer in Philadelphia and upcoming stops at Chaos in Tejas, The Orion Festival, Bonnaroo, Lollapalooza and Heavy Mtl.

Baroness announced their eagerly awaited return to the road in early April with guitar player Pete Adams saying: “It’s hard to find the words to express how excited we are to announce this tour. Seven months ago, who knew when it would be or even if we could get back on the road.  But here we are, picking right back up where we left off. A heartfelt thanks to everyone’s unconditional love and support for us through, let’s hope, the hardest time this band will ever see. We told you we’d be back so let’s do this thing!”

Baroness was sidelined when their tour bus plunged off a viaduct in the Bath area of England on Aug. 15, leaving the band and crew members with a variety of serious injuries. Yellow & Green had been released less than a month when the accident happened, and with just four shows remaining in the six-week trek before the band could return home to enjoy the praise that was being heaped upon the double-album. Singer/guitar player Baizley suffered extensive injuries, which, at one point, clouded the future of both the band and his return to music.

In October, after an unprecedented outpouring from fans, peers and friends, Baizley posted an open letter in which he painfully recounted the horrific crash (http://baronessmusic.com/update-from-baroness/), ending the ten-paragraph note with a fierce determination to return to music and touring.  By December, a clip of Baizley and Adams performing an acoustic rendition of “Stretchmarker” was posted on the Baroness website (http://baronessmusic.com/a-message-from-john-stretchmark-video/) with a brief note that started with “Simply put: it’s time to get back to it.”  With that, Baroness’s return to touring was not a matter of if but when.  Adams and Baizley made their first public appearance with a performance in late January at Decibel Magazine’s 100th issue celebration in Philadelphia.  Earlier this month, Baizley ventured to SXSW for a solo performance at Invisible Oranges/Brooklyn Vegan’s showcase as well as pair of art exhibits (Baizley’s art can be viewed at www.aperfectmonster.com).

Legendary Canadian band KILLER DWARFS, are very excited to announce that they are reuniting to support the release of their “Lost” album Start @ One . The tracks were recorded in 1993 at Powerlines Studios in Toronto, Ontario, Canada with Producer/Engineer Fred Duvall. Fred also recently produced and recorded the very successful Russ Dwarf acoustic release Wireless.

The album`s lineup of Russ Dwarf, Darrell Dwarf, Ronbo Dwarf, and Gerry Dwarf is the same as the bands prior Sony/Epic release Method to the Madness in 1991. The original master tapes are currently being digitally remixed and re-mastered for the release scheduled for early July 2013. SOULFLY are pleased to announce that they have inked a deal with Nuclear Blast Entertainment, a new division of Nuclear Blast formed by Nuclear Blast owner Markus Staiger and former Roadrunner A&R chief Monte Conner. SOULFLY will enter the studio this month to begin recording their as-of-yet-untitled ninth studio album. The record will be produced by the world-renowned Terry Date, who is known for his work with such bands PANTERA, DEFTONES and SOUNDGARDEN among many others.

“I’m really excited to be signing SOULFLY to Nuclear Blast Records,” commented legendary frontman Max Cavalera (SEPULTURA, CAVALERA CONSPIRACY). “On top of it, we’re going to be reunited with Monte Conner who I’ve worked with for over 20 years at Roadrunner. SOULFLY ‘s new album is going to be recorded in Seattle with the great producer Terry Date, and it’s going to come out later in the year through Nuclear Blast worldwide. Keep it metal!”

Ever since the band’s gold-certified debut in 1998, SOULFLY have become deadlier and more dangerous with each critically acclaimed successive release, and their upcoming album will be no exception. Expect a release tentatively in the Fall of this year.

TARJA – Finnish Songstress Reveals Title Plus Street Date Of Forthcoming New Full-Length Album

Despite her light and airy character, the music of Finnish songstress/former Nightwish soprano, TARJA has always been shrouded “in black” – the color of heavy rock, mystery and elegance. With her latest studio recording, fans will find that same darkness highlighted by an array of new emotions, multi-hued landscapes and musical atmospheres.

TARJA’s latest milestone emphasizes once again her impressive vocal range and continued artistic growth. Titled Colours In The Dark, the ten-track offering was mixed and mastered by Tim Palmer (Pearl Jam, U2) in Austin, Texas and delivers over an hour of music which includes grandiose orchestra and choir arrangements. Colours In The Dark follows the charting successes of 2007’s My Winterstorm and 2010’s What Lies Beneath.

Colours In The Dark will be released in North America via Eagle Rock imprint Armoury Records on August 27, 2013.
