TAKEN BY THE SUN: Chicago Progressive Post-Metal Doom Gazers To Release Debut Full-Length

Posted in Metal, metal music, Music, rock music with tags , , , on January 28, 2015 by Metal Odyssey

Taken By The Sun - promo album cover pic - #2015TBTSMO3

Chicago progressive post metal doom/gaze collective, TAKEN BY THE SUN, will release their debut full-length next month. Tracked almost exclusively live at Electrical Audio (with “Confessions Of An Opium Eater” recorded at Studio 54 Music Zone), engineered by Sanford Parker (Twilight, Voivod, Eyehategod, Yob etc.) and mastered by Collin Jordan (Eyehategod, Indian, Wovenhand, Voivod etc.) at The Boiler Room, all in Chicago, Taken By The Sun is monolithic in its delivery boasting a sprawling, eight-track, forty-two minute sound expedition.

Multilayered, nuanced, gristly and meticulously arranged, thick gnarled riffs coil around gravel-throated voice incursions, the planet rumbles, tracks heave like the sky is breaking. Aggressive yet cathartic, at times otherworldly, TAKEN BY THE SUN recalls the confounding atmospheres of veteran sound contortionists Neurosis, Isis, Pelican, Rosetta, Mouth Of the Architect, Red Sparowes, and The Ocean without replicating them.

Taken By The Sun – Track Listing:

1. Scars
2. Demons Tempt the Dying Man with Crowns
3. Fuse
4. Red
5. Detached
6. Volatile
7. Confessions of an Opium Eater
8. Ornaflux

Forged in 2011, TAKEN BY THE SUN, a moniker representing decay and rebirth, is a Chicago Metal band rooted within The Windy City’s venue-shaking, riff-worshipping doom and stoner metal traditions. At the core of their sound there lies fuzz-addled guitars, grinding bass, cavernous drums, and dry-throated vocals fused with prog metal acrobatics, lush vocal harmonies, and pedal steel twang to heighten the intensity and plain epicness of their compositions. And now, with their self-titled debut, TAKEN BY THE SUN is able to convey the energy and diversity of their music in recorded form.

Taken By The Sun - promo album cover pic - #2015TBTSMO3

Recorded live with only minimal subsequent overdubs, the album is faithful to both the earnestness and magnitude of the band’s sound. TAKEN BY THE SUN is William Arroyo, Patrick Auclair, Justin Cape, Mark Cichra, and Kris Ziemlo.

Taken By The Sun will be released independently on February 24th via the official TAKEN BY THE SUN BandCamp page at THIS LOCATION.

UNREST – To Release ‘Grindcore’ On Unspeakable Axe Records March 24th

Posted in Metal, metal music, Music, rock music with tags , , , on January 28, 2015 by Metal Odyssey

Unrest - Grindcore - promo album cover pic - #2015UMO

Philadelphia/Brooklyn grinders UNREST have debuted new track “Quit” from upcoming album Grindcore. Check out the exclusive stream and an interview with the band at http://apochs.net/2/i-unrest/.

Grindcore will be released on Unspeakable Axe Records March 24.

If the band name doesn’t spell it out for you, the album title surely will.  This is nothing but grindcore – stripped down, unpretentious, and loud.  At the same time, it’s much more than that. UNREST is comprised of craftsmen from bands both familiar (WOE, TRENCHROT and those about to be (Dark Descent’s up-and-coming doom act, CRYPT SERMON).

The riff and song construction throughout this debut album is right in line from what you’d expect from a group of such capable veterans.  They wear their NASUM (and by proxy, NAPALM DEATH) influence on their sleeves, but through sheer mastery of the craft elevate the material well beyond a mere tribute to old masters. Check out the track “Anything to Shock” at this location.

Vermont’s BARISHI Release ‘Endless Howl’ EP

Posted in Metal, metal music, Music, rock music with tags , , , on January 28, 2015 by Metal Odyssey

Barishi - promo live band pic - #2015BMO1

Dynamic Vermont Metallers BARISHI have just released the Endless Howl EP, the follow-up to 2013’s acclaimed self-titled full-length. The band’s new effort is a brilliant mix of progressive metal dynamics and inventive hardcore harshness that is at once creative, melodic, and captivating.  The Endless Howl EP is streaming in its entirety and available for purchase at:

http://barishi.bandcamp.com/album/endless-howl-ep

The BARISHI sound is indeed one of depth and breadth. In a review of the self-titled debut, Andy Synn of NoCleanSinging.com described it as “avant-garde prog-metal, one which mixes Intronaut’s more melodic and psychedelic tendencies with the hardcore bite and bitterness of Poison The Well and the same sort of autistic-savant creativity of Ihsahn’s solo output.” New Noise Magazine’s Eric May spoke in broader terms of the band’s promise and potential in writing that “it’s going to be something that makes fans of everything from Dream Theater to the Dillinger Escape Plan to Enslaved happy.” Get the picture? And that was the sound of a band just getting started. On Endless Howl, BARISHI not only delivers on the promise of that debut, they take it to a whole other plane of existence.

Endless Howl was recorded and mixed by Brian Westbrook at PDP Recording.

Check out the official video for album track “Smoke from the Earth” at this location.

Barishi - promo live band pic - #2015BMO2

ABOUT BARISHI:

Barishi is making their mark in the New England metal scene and beyond. Formed in 2010 as an instrumental three-piece know as Atlatl they began writing songs influenced by fusion and progressive music. Their style quickly started getting heavier and darker while retaining some progressive influence, thus forging their own style of heavy psychedelic metal. In 2012 they found a wayward vocalist wandering the streets of Keene New Hampshire; bringing him into the fold they found that his sound melded excellently with theirs.

Thus, Barishi was born! Earth shattering grooves combined with savage vocals completed the sound that could only be born in the verdant mountains of Southern Vermont. With their debut self-titled album and this year’s Endless Howl EP, Barishi is truly a force to be reckoned with. Prepare yourself to be pummeled and thunderstruck with ecstatic Metal from the ancient hills of New England.

BEHEMOTH – To Release Official Biography Via Metal Blade Records

Posted in Metal, metal bands, metal music, Music, rock music with tags , , on January 28, 2015 by Metal Odyssey

Behemoth - Biography - promo book pic - #2015BMO

Behemoth: Devil’s Conquistadors by Łukasz Dunaj serves as the definitive BEHEMOTH biography. The book, officially blessed, or rather damned, by BEHEMOTH, serves as an in-depth look at the history of the events that materially influenced the band. As Dunaj points out in the intro, this isn’t, “Poland’s response to Motley Crüe’s biography The Dirt.” Simply put, Behemoth: Devil’s Conquistadors is the story of BEHEMOTH, their music, their ultimate rise to the upper echelon of metal and becoming a household name in their native homeland, Poland.

A 490-page, hardcover tome that is being released by Metal Blade Records in February, Behemoth: Devil’s Conquistadors includes quotes and anecdotes from current and former members that provide context and details in addition to the author’s narrative, plus interviews with Tomas Krajewski, Rob Darken, Graal, Havok, and more. The artistically presented pages are splattered with old photos of the band, flyers, lyric sheets etc. Preorders are available now at metalblade.com/behemoth, and include a bundle with an exclusive shirt available ONLY with this preorder. The passages below serve as previews of the book.

From the foreword by Krzysztof Azarewicz: “If, as a cultural anthropologist, I were to point to a single cosmic force which BEHEMOTH’s music expresses, I would name it not Satan but Dionysus. A deity that represents not only the intoxicating influence of cosmic energies and earthly benefits, but also their benevolent healing properties. A deity of strength and pride. A deity of creative might.”

Nergal discusses the acquisition of his first electric guitar: “The first communion was a very important moment for me. I know this sounds ridiculous, but it’s true. Of course, not as a religion experience – I didn’t understand anything and couldn’t care less. Same as all the other kids. We all stood there with our votive candles and waited for one thing. Cash. The first communion must be one moment when you get the most money you’re ever going to get as a child. And for this money, I bought myself my first electric guitar. Not a bike, no Legos – a guitar.”

In related news, BEHEMOTH is currently leveling stages throughout North America on a mammoth co-headlining tour with legendary death metal practitioners/labelmates, Cannibal Corpse. The month-long Winter live takeover kicks off today in New Orleans, Louisiana and will wind its way through nearly three-dozen cities, coming to a close on March 7th in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. Support comes from two of Sweden’s finest metal exports: Aeon and Tribulation.

KEEP OF KALESSIN – Norwegian Black Metal Legion To Release New Full-Length In North America, Via Indie Recordings Next Month

Posted in Metal, metal music, Music, rock music with tags , , , on January 26, 2015 by Metal Odyssey

Keep Of Kalessin - Epistemology - promo cover pic - #2015KOKMO

Two-time Norwegian Grammy nominees, KEEP OF KALESSIN, will unleash their long-anticipated new full-length in North America next month via Indie Recordings.

Titled Epistemology, the eight-track offering, and first KEEP OF KALESSIN studio output in five years, finds the acclaimed black metal unit now conjuring their sonic wrath as a trio. Make no mistake, however. The indisputable power of these three musical craftsmen translates perfectly on the band’s most diverse recording to date.

As grandiose as a Peter Jackson battle scene bedecked with fire-breathing dragons and treacherous mountains draped in guitars and drums of doom, Epistemology highlights the true guitar virtuosity of vocalist/guitarist Obsidian C. From bone-scraping riffs and sweeping solos, to smooth, melodic passages swathed in warm, poignant tones backed by the military precision of bassist Wizziac and drummer Vyl, KEEP OF KALESSIN anno 2015 is heading out for greatness!

Simply and accurately crowned a, “flawless release from KEEP OF KALESSIN,” by Metal Wani in an early review of the record, Epistemology — a branch of philosophy that investigates the origin, nature, methods, and limits of human knowledge; fuses the prime qualities of traditional ’80s heavy metal, thrash, death and black metal into a smouldering album that is at once epic and extreme; brutal and elegant; engaging and empowering!

Epistemology Track Listing:

  1. Cosmic Revelation (Intro)
  2. The Spiritual Relief
  3. Dark Divinity
  4. The Grand Design
  5. Necropolis
  6. Universal Core
  7. Introspection
  8. Epistemology

KEEP OF KALESSIN‘s Epistemology will be available in North America digitally and on CD on February 24th, 2015 via Indie Recordings with track teasers to be unveiled in the weeks to come.

About Arrival Of Autumn:

A band name inspired by Opeth lyric’s (thanks to drummer Ty Fox) and influenced by various genres ranging from melodic death to groove metal to progressive to rock n’ roll, AOA’s catalogue has grown rapidly with two self-releases in 2014. First it was their debut EP ‘Endless Nights’ in March followed by their ten track full length ‘Shadows’ in September.

Touching on personal issues to triumphing demons as a band, ‘Shadows’ with a dash of dark lyrics and tracks such as The Court Of Owls to There’s No Angels Here to the infectious chorus of Like Fire demonstrates AOA are not just evolving, but are a live force raging to be discovered by the masses.

French Occult Rockers Akasava Announce Debut EP “Strange Aeons”

Posted in Metal, Music, progressive metal, rock music with tags , , on January 24, 2015 by Metal Odyssey

Akasava - promo album cover pic - #2015AMO01

Akasava, new faces to the occult-psych metal scene, will release their début ritual EP Strange Aeons in the late spring of 2015. The French have a pedigree in music almost as notable as their taste in film. So when one draws from the other, you can be sure the atmosphere is electric. Make no mistake, occult rockers Akasava pick their influences well: the playful surrealism of Jean Rollin (The Shiver of the Vampires/The Nude Vampire) meets the 70s horror of Jess Franco (Vampyros Lesbos/Exorcism). Musically speaking, Akasava also draw from that hazy era of psych and prog in the 60s and 70s. Extraordinary bands ahead of their time, such as 13th Floor Elevators, Jacula and Devil Doll, clash with more modern acts like Blood Ceremony, Purson and Kadavar.

Despite adoring this occult and ancient sound, Akasava are as fresh-faced as they come: they formed in July 2014, four highly motivated souls finding much common ground, and quickly joining forces to jam out the creativity within them. Now, less than a year later, an EP is coming to light. Entitled Strange Aeons, it’s as much an homage to that era as it is pushing the sound forward in new and intriguing directions.

Akasava - publicity photo - #2015AMO01

Akasava Are:

Louis Hauguel – Vocals, Lyrics
Arnold Lucas – Guitars, Organ
Amélie Gavalda – Bass Guitar
David Touroul – Drums

Digital release is set for late Spring, while a single is scheduled for March.

The Body Politic - Promo Band Pic - #2015TBPMO

Nanaimo, BC six-piece powerhouse The Body Politic have posted a teaser for their upcoming music video ‘All Hands’ in support of their latest EP ‘Egressor’, which is available for FREE download here.

Drummer Spencer Bowman comments:

“When we began searching for a director for the All Hands music video, it didn’t take us long to come across Emma Higgins. Emma and her team captured the mood of the song and the energy of the band better than we could have hoped for. We had a blast on set, and we’re excited to have the video’s exclusive premiere on MuchMusic!”

To watch the teaser, please visit the following link here or below. The full video will be exclusively premiered on Much Music on February 25th.

About: The Body Politic’s EP ‘Egressor’ was released September 16th to follow-up their 2011 debut album ‘All Too Human’.  Taking their name from a Clive Barker short story and shifting gears from jazz (which most of the members studied at Vancouver Island University) to Progressive Metal, the band combine poly-metric grooves, aggressive screams and soaring vocal melodies to push the boundaries of Modern Metal music with technically impressive musicianship.

Their emotionally charged songs incorporate an element of playfulness that has led THE BODY POLITIC to stand out in a vast Metal crowd and to perform opening slots for Tesseract, Protest The Hero and Scale The Summit; plus multiple Western Canadian tours with their evolution.

 Nazca Lines 5:23

 Blue Car Syndrome 6:47

 EP Length: 26:08

ABOUT:

Initially never planning to release his music compositions beyond the borders of just song writing, freelance drummer/instructor Sean Lang was urged by his circle of musician friends whom heard his material to take his creativity to the next level.

The outcome is Seven Year Storm, which showcases Lang’s unique sound, music arrangements written entirely by him plus guitarist Dean Lamb (Archspire) whom handles all of the mind-bending guitar leads and solos. Everything comes together into songs that are tight and heavy, melodic and groovy, technical yet memorable.

To get these works of art off the studio floor, Lang launched an Indiegogo campaign (video can be viewed here) to raise the necessary investment to complete the first collection of songs, which will be released in 2015 as two EPs: Aion I and Aion II.

DISSIDENT CLONE “State of Dysphoria” – 4 Song EP Is A Metal Blast!

Posted in Metal, metal music, Music, rock music with tags , , , , , on January 21, 2015 by Metal Odyssey

Dissident Clone - State Of Dysphoria - promo album cover pic - #2015DCMO

4 Out Of 5 METAL Fists!

Metalfistredbckgrndsmall4

DISSIDENT CLONEState Of Dysphoria will be released on March 17th, 2015, via Tridroid Records. This is a 4 song EP that blasts its way through with the sonically mixed trio of Metal, Thrash and Punk. The duo that comprises Dissident Clone are: Patrick Morris on guitar/vocals and Chad Brunsell on drums.

I will admit without hesitation that this is one freaking fun EP to listen to! Underground, raw and retro all the way through, this EP is worth that full jar of rainy day beans you’re willing to let go of. Not only musically do Dissident Clone play the Metal, Thrash and Punk combination; Patrick Morris adjusts his vocals very capably based on which style is being played.

DCIM100GOPRO

Dissident Clone packs an enormous wallop in just these 4 songs, I am very delighted to say. There’s even some groove Metal and haunting riffage going on with their song Eye Of The Wound. Savvy musicians that have compiled a blue-chip EP are Dissident Clone. I highly recommend to all who appreciate music that kick-starts the party into a ruckus. Metal be thy name. – Stone

GHOULGOTHA “The Deathmass Cloak” – A Raging And Wicked, Blackened, Death Doom Metal Album!

Posted in Metal, metal music, Music, rock music with tags , , , , , on January 21, 2015 by Metal Odyssey

Ghoulgotha - The Deathmask Cloak - promo cover pic - #2015G

4 Out Of 5 METAL Fists!

Metalfistredbckgrndsmall4

GHOULGOTHA The Deathmass Cloak has been made available, on January 13th, via the Dark Descent website. This group was formed and is based in San Diego, California. GHOULGOTHA do strike the Death Metal hammer down, more than likely splitting speakers and skulls, across the lands, from their debut album. My Metal God almighty, is this album molasses heavy!

Overall, The Deathmass Cloak plays out as a Blackened Death Metal collides with calamitous Doom Metal listen. Heavy as King Kong’s monster-sized, congealed shit and fused with down tempo Death Metal are best to describe this album’s songs. GHOULGOTHA have won me over due their honing in on their own sound and by not following the leader within the Death Metal universe. There are hoards of riffs, that summons the same Metal Gods that have looked down upon Black Sabbath with appreciation and trust me, these guitar parts are CHUNKY.

Ghoulghota - promo band photo - Nov - 2014 - #33GDDM

I have found The Deathmass Cloak to be a rather diverse listen in Death Metal, where both Old Schoolers and newbies of the Modern era should both walk away feeling some deathly Metal fulfillment from GHOULGOTHA’s creativity. The all-encompassing Death Metal vibe on this album is just an overall treat for my senses; GHOULGOTHA has a downbeat aura to their sound that just locks me in, man.

The sonic surprises of both the album’s intro of Solar Awakening and closer, Levitate Within The Curse, are stuff of genius for a Death Metal band; very impressive musical ideas were obviously fulfilled there. I’ll leave that last thought as something you’ll have to hear for yourself, it’s too good to give away. Metal be thy name. – Stone
