TEXAS HIPPIE COALITION ‘PEACEMAKER’ – A Paramount Hard & Heavy Rock Album; One You Should Be Required To Own

Posted in Hard Rock, hard rock albums, Heavy Metal, heavy metal albums, Music, rock music, rock music news, southern hard rock, southern rock with tags , , , , , , on August 21, 2012 by Metal Odyssey

TEXAS HIPPIE COALITION – Everybody get your hands up, I said reach for the sky! Why? Cause Big Dad Ritch says so… that’s why. When Big Dad Ritch aka The King Of Texas sings with his powerful lungs, I’m listening. You better believe it. The album featured here is Peacemaker and the band of outlaws who created it are famously known as Texas Hippie Coalition aka THC. Best you remember that, my Hard Rock and Metal brethren. Best you all do.

Released on Carved Records on August 14th, Peacemaker is without question in my Metal mind, a paramount Hard Rock album. If I could dictate Metal Marshall Law (and that would be very cool) I would make it a requirement that all of the worldwide Hard Rockin’ populace buy and play loud: Peacemaker. That’s it and there would be no F’n way around it either. Big Dad Ritch and his band have added that extra boost of Heavy Rockin’ Texan juju into this sophomore album of theirs and it’s an F’n thrill to experience.

THC is as American as homemade beer. Screw that apple pie crap. THC blends Southern Hard Rock with a classic Hard Rock nod, while brandishing plenty of Heavy Metal aptitude and this band summons the roots of their own Rock and Country Rock influence. THC exemplifies how this genre should be played and delivered into your ears, veins and Rock ‘N Roll soul. If the Southern Hard Rock torch has been handed down, then THC is the band that took such torch with patriotic and Rockin’ pride. I personally couldn’t think of a better band to lead the Southern Hard & Heavy Rock charge for our future generations.

Take a listen and look below to the Turn It Up music video and… TURN IT UP!

From Hands Up to Turn It Up, the level of Hard Rock authority is so stunning that it’s an F’n dreamland of kicking the shit out of your worries, anxieties and fears combined. You will feel personal power from listening to Peacemaker. You don’t need to read any epic Tony Robbins book to get personal power anymore; cause THC will administer it through Peacemaker. Go ahead, tell Tony that Stone said that too.

From Wicked to the title track, the uncompromising heaviness of THC continues to reign. With guitar muscle supplied by Wes Wallace, the leads, rhythm, riffs and mini-solos will leave you begging for mercy… as you continue to hit the replay button. John Exall (bass) and Timmy Braun (drums) provide more heavy Texas thunder than a raging coastal storm heading straight for Corpus Christi. Crash, boom, bang and I’m not fibbing about a damn thang.

Where Big Dad Ritch ignites this album (non-stop) with his prolific vocals; he also brings Peacemaker to a surprisingly softer and momentous closing as he sings… a ballad. With piano keys as an intro, the stage is set for Think Of Me to be that song to make all the gals cry. Man, Big Dad Ritch can croon (still) he sings verses in Think Of Me with his trademark branding iron vocals. Wes Wallace lays down the (Arena Rock style) licks on guitar, while John and Timmy keep the heavy beats raining down on this mid-tempo (heavy) ballad.

Don’t pass up on Peacemaker. This album is just too entertaining and too damn energized with all grand things about Heavy Rock ‘N Roll! THC is a band to reckon with in our Heavy Rock world. It’s like I say to everyone who cares to listen: You either join THC or get the hell out of their way, cause Big Dad Ritch and his band are here to stay. Metal be thy name.

LOST EMPIRES “Death And Evil Beasts” – 6 Song EP Is Stone’s METAL Pick Of The Day!

Posted in Heavy Metal, heavy metal albums, heavy metal bands, metal music, Music, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , on August 20, 2012 by Metal Odyssey

LOST EMPIRES is an American Metal band from Oklahoma. Their (self released) 6 song EP, Death And Evil Beasts, is my “METAL Pick Of The Day!” Why? Cause all 6 songs bestow the musicianship, sound, energy, attitude and vibes that I want to hear and feel from true underground Metal. Raw, lean and mean. Blue-collar. No corporate polish. 0% bullshit. This is Metal that I get excited to tell my Metal brethren about. It all reminds me of those tape trading days.

Brandon on vocals has a savage delivery. His vocals come across to my ears as Lemmy Kilmister meets Udo Dirkschneider; or something crazy like that. Trust my Metal instinct here, this guy can sing Metal. This band can play Metal. Lost Empires boasts duo guitarists, Kilby and Brad; both don’t skimp on ass-kicking their way through these songs. I can best describe their guitar playing as riff heavy, melodic and old school American Power Metal.

The keyboards, courtesy of Abe, fit right in with the total design of Lost Empires sound; this musical element is not overdone at all. The drumming from Jeremy is precise and coupled with a “less is more” style; which only makes the songs that much better. Luke on bass rounds out this potent Lost Empires lineup with his cool, thumping beats.

All 6 songs showcase Lost Empires as one damn tight unit. Lost Empires don’t overreach on any level and their brand of American (Power) Metal tastes great to my ears and brain. This band sounds and (obviously) plays like they revere Metal and our beloved genre’s sacred past. In other words, Death And Evil Beasts doesn’t sound like it was slapped together over a case of beer.

Lost Empires have the Metal aptitude to take their songs to the next level, by eventually getting a recording deal with a supportive Metal label. For now, this band can hone their skills and hopefully release a full-length album. I know I’ll be psyched to hear more Metal from Lost Empires. Metal be thy name.

Wanna See Some Of My VENOM Stuff? It’s All Really Cool…

Posted in Black Metal, Heavy Metal, heavy metal albums, metal music, Music, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , , , , on July 19, 2012 by Metal Odyssey

VENOM – Whoa. Check out (above) that cool front cover for my issue of Zero Tolerance. This is the December 2011/January 2012 issue – #44. Cronos, the legendary classic member, bassist and vocalist of Venom gives one hell of an interview in this issue. After reading this interview, I really admire the up-front nature of Cronos. He tells it like it is. Old school is Cronos and his band Venom is back like a pit viper!

This leads me to the most recent Venom release…

Fallen Angels. The 13th album overall from Venom, Fallen Angels was released back on November 28th, 2011, via Spinefarm Records / Universal. I actually won this CD you see above from a bet I made with Best Metal Buddy Scott Coverdale. What was the bet? It was a “straight-up” bet that my beloved New York Giants would defeat the hapless New England Patriots in Super Bowl XLVI. My NY Giants won, 21 to 17. Thank you, Coverdale!

What an album Fallen Angels is. This is as rabidly potent a Venom lineup as there has ever been, (with no insult to the classic Venom lineup of Cronos, Mantas and Abaddon). No studio trickery. No bullshit. Just F’n old school Metal, the way it was meant to be played and heard… courtesy of Venom.

Here is the back cover of Fallen Angels:

And now, I’ve saved the best for last…

How influential and pioneering is this Venom debut! Welcome To Hell was released back in 1981, via Neat. I’ve had this cassette version of Welcome To Hell for a very, very long time. This debut from Venom is 100% Metal history 101, my Metal brethren!

So many genres of Metal can thank Venom for their establishing such a raw & speed driven sound; establishing this sound so early on during the NWOBHM movement. Venom paved a Metal path for countless Thrash and Black Metal bands; it’s nearly mind-boggling to grasp.

See for yourself, how Venom is misspelled on this cassette’s spine. It reads: Venon. Who the hell was dumb enough to misspell Venom this way? Whoever was responsible for this printing error was obviously a constipated poser and a turd. Blasphemy!!

Maybe this “Venon version” of Welcome To Hell is worth a blackened fortune? I just don’t know. I’ll never part with this cassette anyways, unless someone offers me six figures for it.

The track listing on this 1981 cassette version of Welcome To Hell:

SIDE ONE

Sons Of Satan

Welcome To Hell

SIDE TWO – SIDE METAL

One Thousand Days In Sodom

Heaven and Hell Records – Responds To Trademark Infringement Claim

Posted in Heavy Metal, heavy metal albums, heavy metal news, metal music, Music, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , , on July 13, 2012 by Metal Odyssey

In March of 2012 Heaven and Hell Records released a limited 1000 pressing CD for the band Overlorde SR (formerly known as Overlorde) titled Medieval Metal Too. The release is an archive of the band’s material recording from 1983 to 1989.  Many will remember the North Carolina band from the track “Keeper of the Flame” featured on the Metal Blade Records’ Metal Massacre VIII compilation and their infamous 1985 Medieval Metal EP.

Since the announcement of this release, both Heaven and Hell Records and Overlorde SR have been contacted by the New Jersey band Overlorde with claims of trademark infringement. The New Jersey band has also claimed that band’s similar monikers will cause confusion in the Metal community. We feel there are substantial questions about who first used “Overlorde” and who is best known as Overlorde.  We also feel that the audience for this material is sufficiently small and sophisticated to know the difference between Overlorde and Overlorde SR (in fact, we also reissued material by Canada’s Overlord).

Nevertheless, the issue should be settled, and it should be settled between the bands without threats to Heaven and Hell Records. In light of this situation Heaven and Hell Records will be ceasing with sales of Overlorde SR – Medieval Metal Too until the two bands have come to some agreement. In addition any plans to release another album under the name Overlorde SR have been halted at this point.

Although we do support Overlorde SR and strongly feel that the evidence shows they used the name first and have tried to avoid confusion by using “Overlorde SR”, this is an issue between the two bands. And any assumptions that there will be confusion caused between the similar monikers, and that fans will not be able to distinguish between the two just seems rather insulting to the intelligence of the metal community.

In closing H&H Records hopes that both bands can come to a civil conclusion and put this matter to rest.

SILENCER – Denver Thrashers To Release “The Great Bear” On September 25th, 2012

Posted in Heavy Metal, heavy metal albums, metal music, Music, rock albums, rock music, rock music news, Thrash Metal with tags , , , , , , on June 28, 2012 by Metal Odyssey

Denver Thrashers SILENCER will release The Great Bear on September 25th. The album is the group’s third full-length album and their first concept record. The band has this to say about the music of The Great Bear, an approach that took the band back to its heavy metal roots:

Silencer has followed a steady progression of thrash through the years, bordering on the extreme on recent releases. On this album we rewind to more 70’s and 80’s influences, aiming to bring a bit more rock back into metal without sacrificing any punch; things like big choruses and hooks as opposed to our previous works’ all out intensity and such. We were definitely influenced by concept albums such as Rush’s 2112 and Queensryche’s Operation: Mindcrime (among others) in putting together our story. This album musically is more denim, spikes, spit and vodka than anything we’ve done.

Conceptually, SILENCER takes a look at the U.S-Soviet space race of the 1950s/1960s and asks some “what if” questions.

Lyrically, we rewind back to space race era Soviet Russia, and we chose to take a fictional turn towards what would have happened if the Russians chose to one-up the American’s moon landing by going somewhere further. We tell the story from the Russian perspective, and try to capture the mentality of a union that could mobilize their entire population to achieve a goal, and also from the perspective of a member of this mission. This sort of story almost wrote itself, and its mood lent us to write some more straightforward yet very heavy tracks. It’s definitely more thematic than prior releases, but aims to get to the point and tell a large story fairly efficiently.

The Great Bear will be distributed by Vanity Music Group and will be available in stores, iTunes and Amazon MP3. Available physical formats are CD and limited edition 180-gram vinyl. SILENCER will be performing on select warm-up dates and are in the planning stages for tours following the album’s release.

The Great Bear Artwork & Track Listing:

1. Sacred War

2. I Am Thunder!

3. 1969

4. Great Bear

5. Insignia

6. Star City pt. I

7. Star City pt. II

8. Orders/Noble Sacrifice

9. The Roar

10. Light

11. The First, The Last

SILENCER History:

Formed in 1998, Silencer began their career on the strength of two self-released EPs Kozmos (2000) and Structures (2002). Built on a foundation of thrash, Silencer added increasing amounts of melody, intensity and high concept. Almost immediately these became highly sought after in the metal underground, as the band shipped copies box after box both domestically and overseas to independent distributors, boosted by a slew of strong worldwide ‘zine reviews.

Many more copies were moved as a result of their heavy gigging schedule which saw them crisscross the western US several times, appearing at a number of signature metal festivals, and anywhere else that would let them plug-in.  Silencer’s first official release came in the form of Found on the Sun (2003), released by Italy’s Steelheart Records and earning the band its first real European distribution. After more domestic touring, the band moved to a five piece and began work on their first full length album entitled Death of Awe (2005), released on Mausoleum Records.

The band further pushed their thrash roots to breakneck speeds on this release, signifying the largest step yet in their progression. Another western US run later, the band regrouped to write the follow-up. Equally dense and furious as the prior release, the band focused on a more epic delivery of their now very cutting edge thrash sound. In early 2009 Divisions was released on F-Bomb Records.

Metal Hammer’s revered Malcolm Dome wrote about Divisions, “Silencer have learnt the cunning art of writing songs with a purpose. There’s still life in thrash”. Now after another musical evolution and a lineup change that reverts the band back to a familiar four piece, Silencer rewinds the influence clock a few decades back and tackles their first concept record. Musically more direct than previous album, The Great Bear releases worldwide September  2012.

METAL ODYSSEY’S MOTHER’S DAY SONGS & ALBUMS TO ROCK YOU! 2012 EDITION!

Posted in classic rock, country music, Hard Rock, Heavy Metal, holiday songs, holidays, Music, rock and roll, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , , , , on May 9, 2012 by Metal Odyssey

MOTHER’S DAY 2012 – Yes, Mother’s Day is upon us. Mothers Rock. On May 13th, 2012, the U.S. will be celebrating Mothers Day. There are different dates for Mothers Day, depending on where you live in the world. I hope you all can give your mother a big hug and thank you on this special day. I’ll be blowing a kiss to the sky this Mother’s Day, to my mother up in heaven.

While compiling this groovy list of mother songs and albums; my research kinda went astray. It happens. You see, I’m not too sure if all of these choices on this list will actually… Rock. Some actually make me laugh just looking at the covers. Sorry, that’s just me, I do tend to have a sense of Metal humor. A couple of albums below came from Metal Odyssey visitor’s suggestions: Queen and Every Mother’s Nightmare.

Hopefully this list of mother songs and albums will provide a definitive starting point for your Mother Album Collection. If not, maybe you can share a laugh or two with me. If you find this list boring, by all means you can go watch an ABBA concert DVD instead and get psyched-out by some live Dancing Queen. Metal be thy name.

Queen – A Day At The Races

Yes, this Queen album Rocks! Tie Your Mother Down is the opening track too. This album comes highly recommended by Stone.

Mum’s The Word – 60 Fabulous Songs Your Mother Should Know

Um, this is a “2 CD set” as well. What if your mother doesn’t know these songs? Then what?

Mother’s Finest –  The Very Best Of – Not Yer Mother’s Funk

Mother’s Finest for all intents and Metal purposes… ROCKS.

Within Temptation – Mother Earth

Within Temptation ROCKS. ‘Nuff said.

Mother Mother – Oh My

Uh… I have absolutely, positively no idea. It’s an album though.

Every Mother’s Nightmare – (self titled)

This band and their 1990 debut album… ROCKS.

Country Songs For Mother’s Day

I doubt there are any Rockin’ kick-ass songs on this one. Then again, you just never know.

Mama’s Hand – Bluegrass And Mountain Songs About Mother

Whoa! I don’t know which is funnier! The title of “Mama’s Hand” or the picture on this album cover! My interpretation of this album’s picture: Mama blew a nasty cheese fart and her daughter is not amused.

Red Hot Chili Peppers – Mother’s Milk

ATTENTION: Red Hot Chili Peppers… ROCK! This album is highly recommended by Stone.

Robert Gass & On Wings Of Song – Ancient Mother

I am leaning towards this being a picture of an ancient fertility statue? I think? I have no idea what the music sounds like on this album. Maybe chanting? I did research some: Robert Gass is a classically trained musician and he directs the vocal group On Wings Of Song.

The Greatest Moments Of Heavy Metal History – As Told By The Musicians Who Create, Play And Live It

Posted in classic metal, classic rock, Heavy Metal, heavy metal albums, heavy metal news, metal music, Music, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , , on April 13, 2012 by Metal Odyssey

Everyone has their own opinion, as to what they consider was/is the “greatest moment” of Heavy Metal history. I have mine and it is Quiet Riot creating and achieving the first #1 Heavy Metal album, Metal Health, to reign on the Billboard album charts. This was 1983 and I remember it all so vividly. To have a Heavy Metal band represent us Metalhead fans this way, was truly a profound moment… for me. No other Heavy Metal album before Metal Health went to #1. Amazing.

The  world knew then… that Heavy Metal was forever accessible within the mammoth antagonistic world known as… the mainstream. Yes, Heavy Metal has and will forever rule the underground, only Quiet Riot made certain that the mainstream and its album charts would never be the same again.

A short time ago, I contacted several world known musicians who are making a living by creating and playing our beloved Heavy Metal. I posed the same question to each musician: “What do you consider is/as the “greatest moment” in Heavy Metal history and why?” As you shall read below, their answers are all unique and makes for some downright fun Heavy Metal discussion!

Without question, these talented and admirable musicians are forever historically part of Heavy Metal. They live for Heavy Metal. They are continuously contributing to our beloved genre with blood, sweat and tears. I thank them all for it. I also thank each musician below for taking the time, from their busy schedules, to participate in this feature on Heavy Metal. Each and every one of ’em… ROCKS! Hell yes, they do.

Louis St. August of MASS –

“Very tough question but for me I would have to say it was when I started to see some of my favorite Rock Gods appear on Television. At ten years old I would sneak downstairs and stay up to one in the morning and watch “Don Kirshners Rock Hour” in the early seventies and catch the likes of Ted Nugent, T.Rex, Grand Funk Railroad, Brownsville Station and KISS.

Then it was The Midnight special with Black Oak Arkansas, Deep Purple, Cheap Trick and Aerosmith. The eighties brought us “Headbangers Ball” to MTV with Ratt, Motely Crue, Black Sabbath, Ozzy, Whitesnake, Dio, etc..

Great time and memories! Simply my favorite era in Heavy Metal History!”

Kev Moore of BC Sweet, Christie, Witch Cross

“The greatest “personal” moment for me in Metal history was hearing the opening bars of ‘Burn’ by Deep Purple for the first time in ’74 and the subsequent onslaught of the songs on that album. It had a huge effect on me. Very close to that would be the unbelievable ‘comeback’ by AC/DC following Bon Scott’s death. Who saw ‘Back in Black’ coming? Not me!”

AC Alexander of LIZZY BORDEN

“I would consider one of the greatest moments in Heavy Metal history to be the addition of distortion/overdrive to amplifiers. It is one of the underlying connections between every Metal/Rock band. Think about some of the biggest riffs ever written in this genre, how would they sound without it?”

Gordon Brown – (ex) IRON CLAW & Solo Artist

“I’ve pondered this for quite some time now and there are so many things I could say, however, there can be only one really and it’s the formation of Cream. They led the way for all those who wanted to open their musical minds and all of the bands that followed did exactly that.”

BOBBY K of 13 –

“Stone, Great question! Hmm… I gave it some serious thought and the one thing that keeps poppin in my head is the fact that Black Sabbath had the balls to record that…”Devils Chord” and I believe it is a diminished 5th minor chord as in the opening to the song Black Sabbath. That chord paved the way for Metal!”

From what I’m to understand, all the great composers ie…Bach, Brahms, Mozart, Beethoven avoided playing that chord in fear of being labeled a Heretic!  Hence we have what the Bible Thumpers call…The Devils Music…Horns Up!!   Oh yea….and MC5 for saying live “Kick out the jams Mother Fukkerz!”  Go figure, a Detroit Band pulled that one off!”

Masaki Murashita of Hemoptysis

“Let’s say the 80s was the greatest moment because that’s when all of the great Metal legends were putting out awesome timeless records. I was born around that time and I wasn’t there, so I wish I was in a part of the scene to witness it.”

TOAD – Arizona Metallers Issue Tour Recap; Band Prepares Forthcoming EP

Posted in Heavy Metal, heavy metal news, metal music, Music, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , on April 8, 2012 by Metal Odyssey

Arizona Metal militia TOAD has returned to its homeland of Phoenix, after a two-week migration through the Rocky Mountains and across the southern United States. To say TOAD‘s journey was a success would be an understatement. Old friends were revisited, new allies were formed, and TOAD‘s rotten gospel was delivered on a nightly basis to receptive congregations.

Upon their return to the desert, TOAD immediately delved back into the writing process in preparation for the next album. TOAD‘s new music is an expansion and improvement upon the themes prevalent in last year’s Rotten Tide, which continues to reap critical acclaim from critics and fans alike. These latest songs are the results of a more mature, driven, and aggressive band. Once the record is finished, TOAD plans on continuing its Eastern expansion to the Atlantic coast, and beyond. Take Over And Destroy.

In the meantime, check out live footage from the band’s stop in Fayetteville, Arkansas last month at THIS LOCATION.

A maniacal six-piece, TOAD formed in 2008 and has rapidly evolved into a complex entity. TOAD‘s sound is hardly definable but rather a divine amalgamation of and elaboration upon all things heavy within the last four decades of rock music. Though obviously influenced by the Scandinavian Death and Black Metal movements of the 1990s, the band ensures that every song pulsates with the groove established by Metal’s forefathers – bands like Black Sabbath and Judas Priest.

With the addition of former Slut Sister and Drone Throne guitarist Alex Bank Rollins, and the replacement of original guitarist Danny Labarbera by former Queen Beast member Nate Garrett, the band has solidified a group that is road-ready and unstoppable in both its creative output and self-promotion. Rounding out the lineup are original members Andy Leemont on vocals, Shane Taylor on drums, Trey Edwin on bass, and Pete Porter on organ. TOAD strive to be at the forefront of the progression of the genre.

DREADLINK – Signs To Massacre Records

Posted in Heavy Metal, heavy metal news, metal music, Music, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , on March 20, 2012 by Metal Odyssey

The history of DREADLINK began in 2009, when five experienced musicians decided to form a band, which soon became more than a band. It became a philosophy.

DREADLINK is authentic and deep and sounds more like an engine running rough than a conventional Metal band. The band switches from brutal groovy passages to melodic melancholic parts, that will still crawl under your skin even if you’ve heard it a thousand times.

Good songwriting and songs with a high recognition value are really important to DREADLINK. They don’t focus on technical finesses – because the song itself is the most important thing.

DREADLINK’s a philosophy a lot of people should participate in.

The title track to ACCEPT’s new album Stalingrad – due out on April 6th in Europe and April 10th in North America – is available for listening in its entirety on the band’s YouTube channel.

The follow-up album to the runaway success of 2010’s Blood Of The NationsStalingrad’s eleven tracks were once again produced by Andy Sneap and are filled to capacity with everything that made ACCEPT famous: exceptional songwriting, soaring guitar solos, a propelling dual-guitar attack, a no-holds-barred rhythm section and chanted background vocals. Every track is destined to become a live anthem!

Guitarist Wolf Hoffman has previously stated: “We put ourselves under enormous pressure to bring out a new album right after our 180-show tour marathon, which took us two times around the globe. But we are very proud about what we delivered with Stalingrad and we hope our fans will like it as well”.

ACCEPT will be touring throughout Europe with NWOBHM label mates Hell this April and also performing in Russia.

AVATAR ‘Black Waltz’ Is Dark, Extreme, Modern and Groove Laden… Metal Bliss

Posted in Extreme Metal, groove metal, Heavy Metal, heavy metal albums, heavy metal news, metal music, modern metal, Music, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , , , , , on March 1, 2012 by Metal Odyssey

AVATAR – The debut full-length album, Black Waltz, from Sweden’s AVATAR was released back on February 14th, 2012, via eOne Music… and it’s hereby highly recommended by yours truly, for your Metal famished senses. Extreme vocals are prevalent from Johannes Eckerström and he essentially nails it from top to bottom. Johannes isn’t belting out Death or Black Metal tones, instead it’s all super-fine Extreme. Dark. Damn good. When Johannes does come clean with his vocals, it’s… damn good again.

The Metal itself has more grooves discharging than I could possibly count. There’s also a melodic sensibility happening big time with the Metal of AVATAR and it all comes across to me as a thrilling listening experience. Metal be thy name is this AVATAR band an unforeseen Metal prize for me in 2012. AVATAR plays some straightforward Metal, only it’s the inventiveness of the parts and the dazzling delivery of the Extreme, which all equals to the impressive Metal sum on Black Waltz. Whoa.

AVATAR implements elements into their Metal that keeps their songs interesting, (as an example) the creepy chorus as an outro for Torn Apart. Ready For The Ride is a fine Metal example of just how Extreme AVATAR can come across, this song when played at maximum level is one of the more enjoyable listening moments I’ve had with a song lately. Hell, playing Black Waltz in its entirety at maximum volume, is prescribed Metal medicine for any shitty day you or I shall encounter from here on in.

______________________________

To explain the Metal listening experience of Black Waltz, in one word, that word would be: INTENSE. Within these 11 songs on Black Waltz, I hear a band that obviously is adept in Metal creativity and focused on quality. In Napalm and has progressive footings and still comes across with that dark feel and vibe that AVATAR wants us all to accept. Dark lyrically and musically throughout, AVATAR never has me thinking this is the “same old stuff” I’ve been listening to for years.

The title track, Use Your Tongue and Blod are three scalding exclamation points on this album. Furious. Like an Extreme, yet still, a groove driven Metal ambush from the fiery depths of hell itself. Jonas Jarlsby and Simon Andersson on guitars are damn cool to listen to. The riffs, leads and mini-solos are all unique and all importantly memorable. Let It Burn grooves along with such a convincing fire from AVATAR that it gets the “replay continuously” award for this album.

Yes, I dig AVATAR and appreciate the Metal direction that  they are taking here on Black Waltz. To say that I’ve enjoyed Black Waltz as much as any Rob Zombie album ever made is real. That new Alice Cooper album from last year has nothing over on Black Waltz either. AVATAR is without question, a band not to ignore. Black Waltz is this band’s debut album that is absolutely can’t miss in 2012 and beyond. The Modern Metal doors of extremity have flung wide open… and AVATAR has arrivedMetal. Be. Thy. Name.

AVATAR:

Johannes Eckerström – Vocals

John Alfredsson – Drums

Jonas Jarlsby – Guitars

Simon Andersson – Guitars

Henrik Sandelin – Bass

MACE – Thrash Metal Pioneers Giving Away For Free, Their First Song In 23 Years!

Posted in Heavy Metal, heavy metal news, metal music, Music, rock music, rock music news, Thrash Metal, thrash metal bands with tags , , , , , , , on February 28, 2012 by Metal Odyssey

Last week the story broke that Seattle Grunge engineer (Pearl Jam, Alice In Chains) Dave Hillis’s first band Mace has reformed. Most of the major Metal mags across the globe have picked up the vibe. Now they want their fans to have the music FOR FREE. (See facebook link at bottom of post).

Dave Hillis started his career as a 17-year-old guitarist for the legendary Thrash Metal band “MACE.”  In the mid 80’s, they released two LP’s on Enigma Records in the US and Blackdragon Records in Europe.  They were featured on Metalblade Records Metal Massacre V,  recognized in the Trashmetal Encyclopedia and fanzine’s around the world as a pioneering force in Heavy Metal. Led by Dave’s furious guitar work they Charted in the UK. and Japan’s top 20; touring with the likes of Slayer, Anthrax, Raven, Death Angel and Testament.

Of course everyone knows Mace guitarist Dave Hillis went on to work on some of the biggest albums in Rock history as a producer. (Pearl Jam “10”, Alice In Chains “Dirt”…etc) but Mace was always in the back of his mind. Hillis told American Rock Scene,  “I always wanted to remix the old songs, and when I opened my own studio I had to do it, and it was so much fun that we thought we would try a new song and that was so much fun that we said why not teach these young kids how it was done back in the day”.

A huge part of the Thrash scene back in the 80’s was the underground tape trading movement. That would help spread the word like wild-fire. Says Hillis when asked how important underground trading was, “We got all our shows on tour and fanzine reviews and interviews that way, giving it away on the internet today is just an extension of that”.

Mace is using the 21st century version of tape trading and is giving away Haarp Strings 2012 to their fans FOR FREE and they are encouraging them to give it away to anyone they want, no strings attached.
