North Carolina power trio BLACK SKIES have been ravaging the North American masses since November 14 on their 2011 Fall tour excursion  in support of the recently unleashed On The Wings Of Time full-length.

The band checks in from the van:

“The tour is going great! We’ve played some of our favorite venues. hit some new ones and had a great first time playing Canada! The crowd, promoters and venues in Montreal and Toronto were very welcoming and we look forward to going back! We’ve been playing songs off our new record for the most part including a tune we hadn’t really played out live before and a May Blitz cover on some nights. It’s been a blast being back out. Our friends Make from Chapel Hill were on the first half of the tour with us. It’s been great to share the stage with these guys every night. They’re an excellent band, and good, fun people to hang with. We joined up with Vaz in Montreal for a string of dates. It’s time to take over Easthampton, Brooklyn, Philadelphia and Annandale!”

BLACK ROBOT – A Metal Odyssey Salute To This Hard Rockin’, B-B-B-Baddass Band On Black Friday!

Posted in classic rock, Hard Rock, hard rock bands, Heavy Metal, heavy metal news, metal odyssey, Music, rock albums, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , , , on November 25, 2011 by Metal Odyssey

BLACK ROBOT – Debut S/T (June 8th, 2010)

BLACK ROBOT – It’s Black Friday across America. That’s when material excess overrules proper judgement. It’s when a popular upscale department store can most likely sell rusted and bent barbed wire for a profit, by utilizing smart marketing on the masses. Black Friday for me is another day to crank up some more Metal and Hard Rock into my ears. A day no different from any other in my Metal lovin’ life. Metal be thy name.

A couple of days ago, with Black Friday looming larger than ever, I was thinking about the bands who have the word “black” in their (band) names. One of the  bands I immediately thought of was BLACK ROBOT. (Yes, the ultra-legendary BLACK SABBATH was the first band I did think of). Classic Rock and Classic Hard Rock influences, colliding with today’s Hard Rock edge, is what overflows in the sound of BLACK ROBOT. You can hear a cool sliver of AC/DC thump and stump gleaming in this band’s Rockin’ thunder, fused with their own original style. Calling California home, BLACK ROBOT has created quite a heavy Rockin’ buzz for themselves the past few years, both stateside and across all shores.

BLACK ROBOT is a Hard Rock band you should be checking out, in the event you haven’t already. Trust me, their brand of Hard Rock is smokin’ with fired-up attitude and a crunchy, fist-to-the-air, blue-collar vibe. The guitar licks and riffs are aplenty, while if you’re looking for some b-b-b-baddass, head knockin’, rhythm stompin’, Hard Rock songs you’ll get ’em with BLACK ROBOT. Metal as my witness, you shall.

BLACK ROBOT was formed back in 2008 by bassist Jonathan “JB” Brightman. He is also a founding and former member of the Grammy nominated Hard Rock band: Buckcherry. Jonathan cowrote and played on the Buckcherry debut S/T from 1999 and their sophomore release from 2001: Time Bomb.

* Check out the BLACK ROBOT music video below, covering the JJ Cale original and Eric Clapton’s cover classic: Cocaine.

The BLACK ROBOT debut album was released on June 8, 2010, on Formosa Records/Rocket Science Ventures.

* Keep your eyes and ears open for a brand new BLACK ROBOT album in early 2012!

* Track Listing For BLACK ROBOT (Debut S/T): Baddass * Cocaine * Momma Don’t Cry * Girls Kissing Girls * Money * I’m In Love * In My Car * Black Robot * Love On A .45 * Dissatisfaction * 23 Days Of Night * Stop The World * Nervous Breakdown

LOVE.MIGHT.KILL – “Down To Nowhere” Video-Clip Released & More Band Info!

Posted in Heavy Metal, heavy metal news, melodic metal, metal music, metal odyssey, Music, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , , , on November 19, 2011 by Metal Odyssey

German-/Italian Melodic-Metallers LOVE.MIGHT.KILL released their second video-clip “Down To Nowhere”. The track is taken from their highly acclaimed debut-album “Brace For Impact” which was released in Europe through Massacre Records this year. LOVE.MIGHT.KILLs first single “Pretty Little Mess” featured the very melodic side of the band while “Down to nowhere” is a heavy-uptempo-rocker.

“Brace For Impact” was released in Japan through Hydrant Music/EMI on November, 16th. The Japanese-edition of the album features a bonus-track called “Satans Den”.

LOVE.MIGHT.KILL also welcomes SASCHA ONNEN (ex-Mob Rules) on keyboards as a permanent member. Commented drummer and producer Michael Ehré: “We´re absolutely happy to have Sascha on board! His incredible skills will lift LOVE.MIGHT.KILL to another level!”

New Line-Up:

JAN MANENTI – vocals

MICHAEL EHRÉ – drums

STEFAN ELLERHORST -guitar

CHRISTIAN STÖVER – guitar

JOGI SWEERS – bass

SASCHA ONNEN – keyboards

LOVE.MIGHT.KILL was founded in 2009 by FIREWIND/ULI JON ROTH/METALIUM-drummer MICHAEL EHRÉ. After touring all around the world with several bands and writing songs for German-Metallers METALIUM, Japanese-female-Metal-vocalist SAEKO or ex-ZED YAGO-founder JUTTA WEINHOLD, he realised his vision of an own band by writing, recording and producing LOVE.MIGHT.KILLs debut-album BRACE FOR IMPACT. In  addition with the brilliant Italian-singer JAN MANENTI as a co-writer, long-time-friends CHRISTIAN STÖVER and STEFAN ELLERHORST (who were both playing in German-based-Metal band CROSSROADS) on guitars and JOGI SWEERS on bass LOVE.MIGHT.KILLs outstanding line-up was completed.

BRACE FOR IMPACT features 13 stunning Melodic-Metal-tracks in the tradition of the bands longtime favourites like f.e. RAINBOW, JUDAS PRIEST, DIO or BLACK SABBATH. Michaels production and MARKUS TESKEs mix (SAGA, VANDEN PLAS, SPOCKS BEARD) underwrites the fact that LOVE.MIGHT.KILLs debut-album will convince all Melodic-Metal-maniacs all around the world.

“Brace For Impact” Japanese-edition-tracklist:

Tomorrow never comes
Calm before the storm
Pretty little mess
Caught in a dream
Satans den (Bonus-track/Japan only)
Through the dawn
Brace for impact
We are the weak
Down to nowhere
Pray to your god
Reach out
The answer
Will love remain

The well-deserved victory at the W:O:A Metal Battle 2010 was the first important step to which we want to live up by supporting these up-and-coming talents energetically. We’re looking forward to the cooperation!“

The band also expresses their joy. Guitarist Anton comments:
“We feel honoured that Nuclear Blast show their interest in BATTLE BEAST by releasing “Steel”. Many thanks to our partners, closest people and most of all to our fans who believed in us and gave us their support. The journey continues!”

MAELSTROM “It Was Predestined” – 3 Song EP Makes It’s Epic Metal Presence Known

Posted in Heavy Metal, heavy metal news, metal music, metal odyssey, Music, Power Metal, progressive metal, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , , , on November 18, 2011 by Metal Odyssey

MAELSTROM – Having established themselves as an underground Thrash Metal force back in the eighties, Maelstrom eventually parted ways as the nineties decade broke loose. The members of Maelstrom went their separate ways, while earning musical respect as members of other prominent bands, the likes of: Soilent Green, spOOge and [CAR BOMB]. Maelstrom has re-emerged upon the Metal scene, with an obvious goal to make Metal that will lead them to the front of the pack. Maelstrom has unveiled a three song EP, It Was Predestined, upon the world’s Metal faithful, giving us all a sign of grand Metal moments to come from them.

European Power Metal receives an influential nod from Maelstrom, the atmosphere and vibe is all there to be felt and heard in all three songs. I also hear the nuances of American Thrash, Speed and Death Metal so finely connected together within the Metal sound of It Was Predestined. Progressive elements of thunder, lightning and nightmarish backing vocals are featured in A Futile Crusade, with stormy atmospherics introducing Arise. Without going overboard on being epic, heavy and fast, Maelstrom has captured balance and actualized some impressive textures and layering within the structures of all three songs.

Gary Vosganian vocally applies a triple threat of Power, Thrash and Death tones, which all seem to match the present moment of each song accordingly. A notable attribute of Gary, is he comes across as a commanding and theatrical lead vocalist, beckoning my ears to listen all the more intently to the song’s lyrics. Joey Lodes does come across as quite possibly digging the legendary guitar talents of Yngwie Malmsteen. Joey can articulate with his guitar in an astounding fashion. One thing is certain, Joey does have an established guitar style and tone all his own. Plus, Joey also plays bass and keys for Maelstrom, a multi-Metalist that can’t be ignored… only appreciated highly by my ears.

With multiple Metal genres of influence being applied to their sound, Maelstrom is still ideally original with their Metal creations I’m listening to. Maelstrom has decided to give the term epic a whole new meaning of heaviness, speed and Metal bite. I look forward to an eventual full-length studio album from Maelstrom. This creative band will surely deliver, based on the three songs I’ve digested into my Metal soul thus far. It Was Predestined should be on any Metal lovin’ maniac’s hit list.

The folks at Germany’s Avant-Rock source Exile On Mainstream Records are thrilled to report that the final master for Heavy Kingdom, the anticipated collaborative album by WINO and CONNY OCHS has arrived at label headquarters, and the final details on the album’s release are being finalized.

The legacy of Scott “Wino” Weinrich in the world of heavy music is indisputable and ever evolving, and here he teams up with Conny Ochs, a songwriter so pure and honest in his output that he seems to be the perfect partner for the straightforward Weinrich. The two met for the first time in 2010 when Conny was supporting Wino on his acoustic solo tour promoting his acclaimed solo album, Adrift.

Through music they discovered a very similar approach to life and art, and a shared wisdom in creating music. It really seemed like two souls becoming one after they got to know each other. Together the two wrote, performed and recorded an incredible set of soulful tunes that speak for themselves, as well as a Townes Van Zandt cover. The artwork contains drawings by both Weinrich and Ochs, and follows the dedicated and deeply personal approach of the whole album. View the cover art for Heavy Kingdom here.

Heavy Kingdom Track Listing:

Somewhere Nowhere

Heavy Kingdom

Dust

Vultures By The Vines

Dark Ravine

Heavy Kingdom will be released throughout Europe on January 27th, 2012 and in North America sometime in March, a final release date to be confirmed in the weeks ahead. Metal Odyssey Mulls Over: Why Are Classic Rock Bands Re-Recording Their Greatest Hits?

Posted in classic rock, classic rock bands, Hard Rock, Heavy Metal, melodic rock, metal odyssey, Music, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , , , on November 16, 2011 by Metal Odyssey

I am not a curmudgeon when it comes to cover songs. Actually, I’ve always embraced a good (and sometimes) excellent cover song and/or album of such songs. I like to look upon a cover song as celebrating the Rock historical impact of its respective original. When a Classic Rock band “re-records” their own songs from the past, they are essentially covering their own songs. The preceding sentence sounds a tad silly huh?

My admiration for a multi-vast number of Classic Rock bands is real and I’ll use four current and legendary bands as examples for this post, all in which have toured extensively while releasing new studio albums in recent years: KISSJourney, Foreigner and Styx. No doubt, I’ve enjoyed listening to all four of these bands re-recorded compilations. The classic quote “what’s old is new again” can seriously be applied to the recent re-recordings of these highly influential bands.

The above mentioned bands each have a catalog of albums that span four decades plus, therefore, breathing a newfound energy and modern relevance into their classic songs is not such a negative move. Or is it? I don’t want to come across as hypocritical when I say “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” or “nothing beats an original”, especially after I’ve stated that I’ve enjoyed these bands rejuvenated greatest hits. Certainly there is money to be made from these four bands re-recording their classics, however, the generations of new fans that are recruited, due to the lure of these re-recordings, is what really matters. In turn, these new fans will (hopefully) keep the Classic Rock flame burning for many years to come.

Even though I spend the money on re-recorded greatest hits from these bands, it doesn’t mean I’ll ignore the original material and look upon it as dated. Truth be told, I’d much rather listen to the original (1978) Pieces Of Eight by Styx and Foreigner’s (1978) Double Vision albums before I reach for the newly re-recorded comps. I’m old school, yet I’m also for moving forward as well. Numerous Classic Rock bands have moved forward, with lineup and lead vocal changes being an inevitable part of the Rock business model. Longevity doesn’t guarantee that an original lineup stays intact and re-recording songs from long ago unites the past with the present.

KISS, Journey, Foreigner and Styx each have earned a brand recognition in the global music marketplace, each carrying on their unique style of Classic Hard Rock, without compromising the quality I have grown to expect from them. I guess when it’s done right and with reverence to the song, any Classic Rock band can re-record their classics for the world to hear and enjoy. At the end of my Metal day, re-recordings from these four bands I’ve discussed or from any Classic Rock band for that matter, is history that I don’t mind hearing and being repeated. Of course I may not like every re-recorded song (or cover song) out there. What I do like is knowing the door to Classic Rock’s past will never be closed anytime soon.

LONG LIVE KISS, JOURNEY, FOREIGNER & STYX.

LONG LIVE CLASSIC ROCK.

VOICES OF DESTINY – Finish New Album Recordings

VOICES OF DESTINY, who have entered the Krabbesackduschder Studios in late April 2011, have recently finished the recordings of their upcoming album after “3 months of fun, hard work, creativity and pain”.

They’ve documented the recordings sessions in various blog entries as well as video clips. (See links below).

The artwork of the album will be created by Jan Yrlund (Darkgrove Design).

Guitarist Chris commented:
“I have mixed feelings. On one hand it’s great to know that you gave your best and created something special, on the other hand it’s some kind of sad because recording means also a lot of fun. Now it’s time for Andy to mix and master the songs and I can’t wait to hear the result because I’m damn sure it will be an awesome heavy sound!”

RAMMSTEIN – Confirms North American Tour 2012

Posted in alternative metal, Hard Rock, Heavy Metal, heavy metal news, industrial metal, metal music, metal odyssey, Music, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , , , , on November 14, 2011 by Metal Odyssey

THE WORLD’S MOST EXPLOSIVE ROCK BAND RETURN TO NORTH AMERICA FOR 21 DATES IN SUPPORT OF THEIR RETROSPECTIVE ALBUM RELEASE “MADE IN GERMANY 1995-2011”

Mon. Nov. 14, 2011 – RAMMSTEIN, the Berlin-based band known for their incendiary live performances, will bring their brand new live production to North America this spring for 21 dates kicking off April 20 in Ft. Lauderdale.  Tickets for the tour, presented by Live Nation, will go on sale beginning Friday, Nov. 18 and will be available at:  www.ticketmaster.com and www.livenation.com

Demand for Rammstein’s pyrotechnic-laden performances has been so great in Europe, where they regularly play capacity level soccer stadiums, the band spent nearly a full decade without setting foot on North American shores. In December 2010, the sextet returned to North America for two sold out shows including a performance at Madison Square Garden. Rammstein followed with a 9-day trek of major North American cities in Spring 2011.

The Los Angeles Times described the live experience as “…epic stagecraft on a Wagnerian scale, several notches up from most Arena Rock.”

The  tour announcement comes on the heels of news of the band’s first retrospective release, Made In Germany 1995 – 2011, which will be available in North America (through a distribution deal between Universal Germany and Vagrant Records) on Dec. 13.  Rammstein recently released “Mein Land,” a new four-track digital single that features two new songs: the title track and “Vergiss uns Nicht” as well as remixes from BossHoss and Mogwai.  A video directed by Jonas Akerlund for “Mein Land” is also currently featured Rammstein.com.  Rammstein’s most recent full-length album, Liebe Ist Für Alle Da, debuted at #13 on the Billboard Top 200 in October 2009.

Rammstein first stormed America in 1998, touring with a set based on their Grammy-nominated breakthrough second release, Sehnsucht, featuring Du hast, the song that brought the world’s attention to the band. During their 1998 Family Values tour, praise was high, as well as indignation: band members were jailed in the US on indecency charges due to the highly provocative live show.

My Trip For Metal At The Lehigh Valley Mall: A Scary & Strange Trip It Was…

Posted in Hard Rock, Heavy Metal, metal music, metal odyssey, Music, people, rock music, rock music news, shopping malls, world news with tags , , , , , , on November 14, 2011 by Metal Odyssey

Back on November 6th, 2011, I went to the overly large, metropolitan mall in Allentown, Pennsylvania, known as The Lehigh Valley Mall. My Metal mission was to pick up the new Arch Matheos – Sympathetic Resonance CD at f.y.e. and trail behind my family. We arrived there at around 12 noon, an hour after this mall opened. (This mall opens at 11:00 am on Sundays). Now, why was this trip to the mall scary and strange? Two words: power outage.

As I walked the first floor of this shopping mecca, I heard an ominous “hum” above me, circling within the atmosphere of this mall’s grand openness. Simultaneously, I heard what I would describe as “clickety clack” and “popping” sounds swirling all about and above me as well. Within a micro-second, I noticed the power go off in at least half of the stores I was near. Whoa. Not cool. My family members with me, on this mall excursion, were not flinching and wanted to ascend the stairs to the second level where the stores of their interest were. My family’s confidence was knowing their security blanket (me) was by their side. No way we were taking any elevator. As I came upon the second level of the mall, I noticed the anchor store JCPenney was without power, along with (again) at least half of the stores in my viewing area.

I felt very concerned, what was exactly happening? Honestly, I couldn’t help shake the awkward feelings of doom. I pointed out to my family members, where the two nearest main exits were, just in case some bad crap was going down. Hey man, who knows? As the family entered some teen clothing store (by a name I cannot pronounce), I asked a male clerk up front: “do power outages happen frequently at this mall?”. He seemed care-free about it all and just psyched that his store still had the power on. I then looked across to the other side of this second level of the mall. I was not pleased for f.y.e. had no damn power.

Arch / Matheos – Sympathetic Resonance

Metal Blade Records – Released September 13, 2011

This was not good. I needed to get my CD at f.y.e. and at the same token, I was still concerned about why this mall lost power to half of its stores. This f.y.e. even had that creepy Mad Max cage across its entrance too. As I walked towards this powerless f.y.e., the power came back on! The power outage seemed to last between ten to fifteen minutes. I did buy the Arch Matheos CD at f.y.e., asking the female associate there if power outages were common at this mall. She said: “of all the years I’ve been working here, this is a first”. As I exited f.y.e., I found it quite odd, that I did not witness one security guard on duty. None telling customers that everything is cool regarding power. None visible to me anyways.

Throughout this entire power outage at The Lehigh Valley Mall, never once was there a public service announcement. Absent was mall management telling the thousands of customers and employees of this power outage and of its status. Shame on The Lehigh Valley Mall facilities management for acting as though people are just supposed to go about their business, while we’re hearing strange noises in the mall’s atmosphere and witnessing half of the stores losing power. What is this mall’s safety protocol? Does it even have one?

Three words for this experience I had on this day: what the hell. I guess if no one else care’s why should I? Bullshit. I do care. Ever since 9/11, I do give a damn if I’m in a major metropolitan mall and suddenly the power goes out to half of the stores. Please note, there was no inclement weather happening on this day either, so blaming it all on a storm is null and void. It’s not that I was looking for Captain America to come rescue me and my family on this day. What I was hoping for was more real. I would have embraced some peace of mind in the form of communication between mall management and patrons.

Holy crap and Metal be thy name. Dumb and dumber oversees the safety procedures of the entire Lehigh Valley Mall. Stone’s Metal advice: When in doubt, get out… and I should have gotten my family and I out of that mall when the power started going off. Who’s to say that the same situation will turn out as okay the next time? I now know, that there will never be any proper safety and public service announcement given to the mall patrons and employees at The Lehigh Valley Mall whenever the next power failure occurs. Experience tells me so.

BEING IN A LARGE MALL THAT LOSES POWER IS SCARY.

A PUBLIC SERVICE & SAFETY ANNOUNCEMENT, ANYONE?

IRDORATH signs with Massacre Records:

The history of the Thrash/Black Metal band started in 2005, when Markus (guitar) and three other musicians formed the band IRDORATH. The first demo “Erwachen” and the first album “Goetterdaemmerung” were recorded and the first gigs were played.
During the work on the second album some lineup changes happened. Since then, Thomas is playing the drums and Esche is playing the rhythm guitar.

The second album “Dekonstrukteur Des Fleisches” was recorded at the “Soundtempel – Studio” and was produced by Stefan Traunmueller. After finishing the record the singer and the bassist left the band.

Markus took over the singing part in addition to the lead guitar and Mario joined the band as the new bassist. Now the lineup is complete again and stronger than ever.

“Dekonstrunkteur Des Fleisches” is going to be released in late January 2012!
