BLACK SABBATH – “13” Cover Art Has Been Revealed… Blah And Yawn Sums It Up Best

BLACK SABBATH – Make no mistake, I am highly anticipating the new studio album to be released from the forever legendary Black Sabbath, just like millions of other fans. I have no doubt, the Heavy Metal from their forthcoming album 13 will be a delicacy to my Metal loving ears. My huge Metal question is: what the heck happened to the album artwork for 13?

Let’s be real here my fellow Metal brethren. This album artwork for 13 looks like sausage that caught on fire; while sitting too long on the outdoor grill. Give me a Metal break. This album signifies studio album #19 from a band that (quite frankly) began our Heavy Metal genre in the first place… and this is the (not so) prolific art that the fans get to see?

Granted, Black Sabbath have had their share of lineup changes over the decades and studio album #19 is without the legendary Bill Ward on drums; so it’s not like I was expecting a ground-breaking album cover that would rival anything that the ultra-talented Derek Riggs (of Iron Maiden fame) has ever accomplished. Still, I was hoping for something that would scream the prowess of Black Sabbath. Man, this album cover is lame.

It’s bad enough that this new Black Sabbath studio album is missing Bill Ward (or Vinny Appice for that matter); now the album cover is a bust. Um, no offense to Brad Wilk. Someone should have reminded whoever was in charge that the #13 has been so overused in the world of music and Pop-Culture that it basically has no spooky or mystical meaning at all anymore. Whoopie-doo.

Did “the powers that be” that oversaw the creation of this album cover really think that a seasoned Metalhead like myself would be blown away by burning sausage twisted into the #13? Alas, I’m certain that Tony Iommi, Geezer Butler, Ozzy and Brad Wilk will save the day and 13 will Rock my face off. It’s the music that matters most. Metal be thy name.

KATAKLYSM – ALBUM TITLE ANNOUNCED!

Montreal based Death Metal powerhouse, KATAKLYSM, have been quietly working on new material for the past several months for their long-awaited follow-up to the highly successful Heaven’s Venom album.

“Well it’s been a seriously busy ride since our last album Heaven’s Venom was released over 3 years ago,” commented vocalist Maurizio Iacono. “From a successful world headlining run, to Ozzfest, into a recap of our 20 years as band with the Iron Will DVD. We’ve been writing in a very humble fashion behind the scenes for the last six months. It’s time to take KATAKLYSM to higher levels and dig deep into our capacities as musicians and songwriters. We know exactly what we have to do, that’s why we have taken our time and why we’ll be taking most of the Summer to complete the new album. The record will deal lyrically with mortality and the purpose of ones being on this earth. The moment we are born we start to die. It’s a sort of deal we make with life, and with that I title the new KATAKLYSM album Waiting for the End to Come.”

Waiting for the End to Come is tentatively scheduled for a late 2013 / early 2014 release. The album will be recorded by guitarist Jean Francois Dagenais and mixed by Zeuss (SUFFOCATION, HATEBREED, ARSIS)

As previously reported, KATAKLYSM guitarist and longtime producer Jean-François Dagenais (MALEVOLENT CREATION, MISERY INDEX, DESPISED ICON, EX DEO) will once again helm the new record. The band is scheduled to enter JFD studio in Montreal and Dallas in June/July.

MAJALIS – Signs With Pulverised Records

Swedish abjection horde MAJALIS is now in league with Pulverised Records!

With this project group suspended for several years and ultimately resurrected by the group’s pivotal figures Tobias Netzell and Björn Pettersson, also of In Mourning fame; MAJALIS is now ready to take the first leap forward and introduce the band’s debut EP to the unsuspecting world of mournful harmonious scorn.

In an official press statement from MAJALIS six-stringer Björn Pettersson: “We are happy and proud to be able to work with Pulverised for our debut EP. Some of us have been working together before and it feels like both us and the Pulverised guys are pretty stoked about this project, so we have no doubts that this will be a good collaboration.”

MAJALIS is a newly formed band but is hailing from a project that started quite some time ago, much of the material to this first EP was written by Tobias and Björn several years ago. Later the four of us got together and decided to make the project into a band, and now it feels perfect to be able to put these songs out as a first sign of life. All four members are active musicians in other bands and are no strangers to playing live or writing music, plus we all tend to work very well together so we have a lot of good vibes for this. The music we have recorded so far draws inspiration from some atmospheric, hardcore and doom-influenced territories. We are really eager to get going and to present what we are working on.”

Pulverised Records label manager Roy Yeo had this to say regarding the latest signing: “Having worked with In Mourning previously, we knew very clearly what Tobias, Björn and co. were capable of for sure. MAJALIS although are amongst the same musical territory with the likes of In Mourning, Katatonia, etc and its predecessors, they sound nothing like the aforementioned bands. There is really no better way to describe MAJALIS than somewhat sounding dangerously close to a funeral-like Post Rock band with unyielding depressive underlings.”

ADRENALINE MOB “COVERTA” – COVER SONG EP = A 100% CONVINCING & POTENT METAL SLAP TO THE SENSES!

ADRENALINE MOB – I really don’t know where to begin in describing this new cover song EP from Adrenaline Mob. Okay, here I go! Coverta consists of 8 songs, spanning both the Classic Rock and Heavy Metal spectrums. Make no mistake, each song covered here is powered by Adrenaline Mob’s 100% convincing and potent Metal. The only thing I wish, is this EP contained another 20, 30 or 50 cover songs from this electrifying Metal supergroup. I’m not shitting around by stating that.

Russell Allen is an ultra incredible vocalist with a Metal resume only found in dreams. Mike Portnoy is (do I really have to remind y’all?) a world-class drummer. Mike Orlando is beyond terrific on guitar. Unreal. John Moyer on bass is so good it’s disturbing. (Get it? Disturbing?). I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: Adrenaline Mob sounds like they’ve been together since the mid 80’s. The songs flow along so smooth, with a non-stop vibe of excitement that it’s fantastically contagious!

Mike Orlando has countless shining moments on Coverta. As I listen to the Led Zeppelin classic The Lemon Song, I stand convinced this may very well be considered his multi-diamond studded performance. Russell Allen captures the emotion of every song he sings on Coverta, with a remarkable and keen sense as to how the lyrics are supposed to jump out at the listener and not just be sung.

Badlands was a badass Heavy Metal band that should never be forgotten and Adrenaline Mob opens Coverta with such a spectacular cover of High Wire that it’s stunning to my Metal soul. The late Ray Gillen is resurrected through this song and Russell Allen can be blamed for that. Spectacular again.

I cannot express just how much I enjoy the cover of DIO’s Stand Up And Shout. I honestly can hear and feel the reverence that Russell Allen has for the late Ronnie James Dio on this iconic song. The same can be said for Adrenaline Mob’s covers of Kill The King and The Mob Rules. There will never be another Ronnie James Dio; only Russell Allen vocally celebrates this eternal legend to a spine-tingling level. Once again, I’m not shitting around by stating that.

If you wonder if Adrenaline Mob can cover The Doors (Break On Through) and Heart (Barracuda) then wonder no more. This supergroup can! It takes many special talents to musically introduce Rock classics such as these to Metal territory and Adrenaline Mob has done so in such an impressive way. The key here is that Adrenaline Mob and Russell Allen didn’t even attempt to go over-the-top with The Doors and Heart; they just gave the songs some Metal armor along with undeniable respect.

If you love Classic Rock and/or Metal, you’re going to find something to love about Coverta. Buy this EP and celebrate the bands and songs that Adrenaline Mob have covered. I know I’m celebrating. I also know Adrenaline Mob has kicked my Metal lovin’ ass with Coverta. Metal be thy name.

Elaborates band mastermind Joel Grind: “This version of ‘Agony of the Damned’ was recorded in September of 2010 with a drum machine a few months before we stepped into the studio to record the one that appears on Conjure and Command. When making an album, I usually demo out the entire thing before I step into a studio. This keeps costs low and gives me time to sit with it to iron out the details. Since Conjure and Command was the first TOXIC record to feature a full band, this demo served the purpose of familiarizing everyone with the new material and is previously unreleased.”

LAIR OF THE MINOTAUR Declares New EP & Release Show For Record Store Day

Celebrating ten years of clear-cut maliciousness through Greek mythology and unchecked riff savagery in 2013, Chicago trio LAIR OF THE MINOTAUR will storm back with a new EP this Spring.

While the members of LAIR OF THE MINOTAUR have been skulking around in the back-alleys of the underground over recent months, the band has been far from dormant. To commemorate a full decade of demolishing eardrums on record and on stage this year, the band will hammer their fanbase with a brand new EP for this year’s Record Store Day.

Entitled Godslayer, the new 7” release bears two new tracks, with the surge of Godslayer opening up, and the monolithic The Black Heart of the Stygian Drakonas on the B-side, both tracks mastered by Scott Hull (Pig Destroyer). A limited edition of 300 copies will be pressed as a 7”, in addition to the digital download through iTunes, Amazon MP3 and the like, and as with their latest album Evil Power will be released on their own The Grind-House Records with distribution from previous label home, Southern Lord, for Record Store Day this April 20th.

Some Metal and Rock ‘N Roll Thoughts – Featuring KING LIZARD! Wednesday, March 27th, 2013

I think it’s been quite awhile since I wrote down Some Metal and Rock ‘N Roll Thoughts on Metal Odyssey. I write plenty of them down on twitter, of course! The last time this column (theme) was posted, I believe was November 4th, 2012. Whoa! Since then my family and I have relocated to Ohio via Pennsylvania and I’ve been busier than a taxi on Broadway during Christmas; when it comes to starting over in a new state.

Within the last year or so, my love for Metal has grown ever stronger. It’s probably cause I’ve leaned on so many bands and musicians to fill my senses with their sounds, energy and vocals; just to get me through the CRAZINESS of relocating. Exhilarating. That’s what METAL is for me. I’m sure y’all know what I’m talking about too, when I equate the word exhilarating to Metal.

I’m really, really, really, really, really excited and cannot wait for the new album Axe To Grind to be released from this True Metal band, with origins from Denmark and featuring Kev Moore on vocals:

The album artwork on numerous 2013 releases that I’ve been seeing and enjoying lately is phenomenal! Suffocation’s Pinnacle Of Bedlam, Six Feet Under’s Unborn, Adrenaline Mob’s Coverta and Helloween’s Straight Out Of Hell are just a few that have my eyes popping with Metal glee! A couple of weeks ago (on or about) I stumbled upon seeing the new premium beer that’s coming out from the ultra legendary IRON MAIDEN. Created by IRON MAIDEN, brewed by Robinsons is: TROOPER – A Hand Crafted Ale. Kev Moore has told me that Witch Cross will have their very own brew coming out, to coincide in celebration of their new album release this Spring! Whoa!

Back in November of 2012, A Nightmare Livin’ The Dream! was released by London’s very own… KING LIZARD. This KING LIZARD band has something very cool happening with their Heavy Rock ‘N’ Roll and I’m more than happy to tell y’all about ’em.

SATAN – Releases New Track From Forthcoming Album “Life Sentence”

Legendary British band SATAN have released a brand new track off their forthcoming new album Life Sentence. The song, Siege Mentality, is now streaming! Check it out below!

Life Sentence, SATAN’s first full-length since 1987’s Suspended Sentence, will be available in North America on May 21st via Listenable Records. The album will mark the 30th anniversary of the band’s highly acclaimed 1983 debut Court In The Act. Life Sentence will also feature the same line-up that appeared on that now-classic piece of metal history.

The cover art for the album (pictured below) was drawn by famed artist Eliran Kantor (SODOM, TESTAMENT, HATEBREED – http://www.elirankantor.com) and depicts a similar graphic concept as Court In The Act. Mixed by Dario Mollo at Damage Inc. Studio in Italy and tracked late last year at First Avenue in Newcastle, Life Sentence is a very strong uptempo heavy metal album that will undoubtedly become a metal classic.

SATAN are a Heavy Metal band originating from Newcastle, England in 1980, known as part of the New Wave Of British Heavy Metal movement. Though generally obscure throughout their career, the band is considered influential for playing a form of proto-thrash metal that was fairly advanced by the standards of the early 1980s. SATAN remained inactive until re-assembling for a one-off gig at Germany’s Wacken Open Air in 2004, and finally reunited in their original Court In The Act line-up for 2011’s Keep It True festival. The band performed at several european festivals in 2011 and 2012 and have announced more festival shows and new album for 2013, to mark the 30th anniversary of their debut release.

New REVEL IN FLESH Tune Streaming At Death Metal Underground

The good folks at DeathMetal.Org have taken a sledgehammer to the face of false metal by streaming a brand new track from the forthcoming album from REVEL IN FLESH. The song, entitled Dominate the Rotten,comes off the band’s forthcoming sophomore release, Manifested Darkness and is currently cracking skulls at http://deathmetal.org/.

Harnessing the momentum created by the album that Teeth of the Divine’s Erik Thomas called “the best of a recent impressive run of the style,” Manifested Darkness ups the ante and goes for the jugular. The album is sure to be considered one of 2013’s best classic Death Metal releases.

The CD and digital download will be unleashed on April 12th by FDA Rekotz and contains nine hammering new hymns of destruction plus one special bonus track exclusive to the CD version. The LP version will be out on April 26th and will include an additional bonus track. The artwork for Manifested Darkness was created by the Spanish artist Juanjo Castellano. The album was mixed and mastered at Unisound Studio by Dan Swanö.

NOISEM (Formerly Necropsy) Signs With A389 Recordings

Baltimore-based A389 Recordings is prepared to proudly unleash the debut LP from one of the most promising new names in today’s Thrash Metal community, having signed young hometown act NOISEM. A389 had announced the signing of the band earlier this month, only then they were still under their previous moniker, Necropsy. With their debut album about to hit the band felt it was time for a change and now charge out of the gate as NOISEM.

NOISEM is young, both as a unit and in actual age, the four members all between fifteen and twenty years old, their energetic youth showing through in the blistering fast nonstop assault that encompasses the listener with their debut LP, Agony Defined. Boasting high-octane death/thrash tracks in the tradition of early Slayer, Morbid Angel, Cannibal Corpse, Kreator and Nuclear Assault with a filthy and crispy delivery, Agony Defined unloads nine neck-mangling tracks in under twenty-six minutes, every attack surging with massive divebomb guitar solos and punishing beats.

A389 will release Agony Defined on CD, LP and digital download on June 11th; fans of Audiopain, Havok, Toxic Holocaust and the originators/masters of the style will not be disappointed, and all non believers will be extinguished.

Be slaughtered by the opening track “Voices In The Morgue” RIGHT HERE.

Coinciding with the album’s release, NOISEM has been confirmed to annihilate the masses of extreme music fans invading their turf for Maryland Deathfest 2013, set to storm the stage opening night, Thursday, May 23rd alongside Abigail, Bolt Thrower, Cobalt and more. The band has also been confirmed to take part in the upcoming installment of the Scion Rock Fest in Memphis, Tennessee on June 1st with the Melvins, Vision of Disorder, Municipal Waste, The Casualties, Impaled, A Life Once Lost and a ton of others with many still to be announced.

SCHWARZER ENGEL – Signs With Massacre Records

We’re happy to announce the signing of Germany’s Dark Metal band SCHWARZER ENGEL!

The band was formed in 2007 by the vocalist and guitarist Dave Jason. The live line-up includes Jens Lindmaier (guitar), Stefan Grießhammer (guitar), Bert Oeler (bass) and Marcel Woitowicz (drums).

In 2010 they signed with Trisol Music Group and released their debut album “Apokalypse”.

In late 2010 SCHWARZER ENGEL toured with Ahab and The Vision Bleak through Germany, Austria and the Netherlands. The tour was accompanied by the release of the band’s EP “Geister und Dämonen”.

The second album “Träume Einer Nacht” followed in April 2011.

SCHWARZER ENGEL played at several festivals in 2011 and 2012, such as the Wave-Gotik-Treffen, Hexentanz Festival, Castle Storm Festival and Dark Storm Festival.

SCHWARZER ENGEL’s music can be described as modern dark metal with heavy guitar riffs, double bass attacks, catchy melodies and furious, deep vocals – all topped with orchestral arrangements.

The band’s poetic German lyrics are about human failures, impressions of nature, myths and the cruel reality of today’s world.

Band leader Dave Jason about the signing with Massacre Records:

“I’m happy to announce that SCHWARZER ENGEL has teamed up with Massacre Records! The label has proven that it’s doing a great job in supporting their artists.

Massacre Records is the perfect partner for the release of SCHWARZER ENGEL’s upcoming album as well as the “Schwarze Sonne EP”, which will be the album’s harbringer.”

SCHWARZER ENGEL’s “Schwarze Sonne EP” will be released in late May via Massacre Records, followed by the worldwide release of the band’s third album “In Brennenden Himmeln” in late July!
