Wishing Well - Band Logo - #MO9090ILMFS

Finnish Hard Rockers Wishing Well opened up for Graham Bonnet Band at On The Rocks Club in Helsinki on April 21st. It provided a good chance for Wishing Well band leader Anssi Korkiakoski to meet Graham Bonnet and discuss continuation for “Hippie Heart Gypsy Soul”, the song which they recorded last year and released earlier this year as a single and on Wishing Well’s critically acclaimed “Chasing Rainbows” album.

“It was good to meet Graham and have a chat. He’s not only a very pleasant and easy-going gentleman but also in top shape when it comes to singing. His live performance was awesome and I really enjoyed seeing him live after a long time. We were all just astonished by what he can still deliver. The band was great too”, says Anssi. “We discussed the possibility of working together in the future and agreed it would be great to record a new track at some point down the road. I really hope we can do that when the time is ripe again since now we’re still busy with promoting our album and Graham is busier than ever with his new albums and autobiography to be released later this year. Time will tell if it’s going to happen but we both honestly wish we’ll get a chance to make it happen.”

For the time being Wishing Well will continue with lead vocalist Pekka Montin, who replaced Peter James Good earlier this spring. The band is now booking more live shows and working hard to promote their “Chasing Rainbows” album.

KISS – Check Out This KISS Zippo® Lighter Collection, Whoa!

KISS - zippo lighters - promo pic - #MO099099ILMF

The Bradford Exchange is currently selling these cool KISS Zippo® lighters (above photo). Each Zippo® lighter is $39.99 (US) and there are a total of eight that will be released. That very nifty custom display with the illuminating KISS logo is also an individual item for purchase too. I’ve seen some kick-ass KISS merch and then I’ve seen some cheesy KISS merch; this is not cheesy, in my Metal opinion! Metal Be Thy Name! – Stone.

As a sidenote: I won’t be buying this lighter collection due to my budget. Still, it’s a fun KISS Kollectible to look at and post about.

PRINCE – A Music Icon Now Rests In Peace

Posted in classic rock, Music, news, rock music with tags , , , , on April 23, 2016 by Metal Odyssey

Prince - Purple Rain - promo pic - #9900PF33

Over the past day, I’ve given much thought about the loss of PRINCE to the world of music. Little did I realize I would write this post in the manner I did. I live for Metal and still I live for music. As I began to break it all down, I realized how immensely important PRINCE really, really was to popular music. Below, I have attempted to look at the Popular Music world with the sad omission of PRINCE, as a bystander and not a fan.

____________________________

Such amazingly sad news to know that PRINCE is no longer alive. Unreal. I truly enjoyed the music videos of PRINCE, back in the day. There was always so much going on in every PRINCE video; they were colorful in both the spirit of his songs and visually. MTV must have made tens of millions in advertising revenue from the PRINCE music videos too. Warner Bros. sure made a ton of money from PRINCE.

Like so many pop culture legends of the 80’s, the songs from PRINCE always make me reflect back to those days when all I had to worry about was myself and where I was going to party next. Like Whitney Houston, the songs from PRINCE were constantly played on the radio; avoiding them was impossible and I subsequently became a quiet fan of both of these music icons. These were the FM radio days and not the instant gratification of satellite radio (of the here and now) where stations are stylized down to a single artist.

Prince - 1999 - promo album cover pic - #MO0999INABJ

When I stop to think about it, there is absolutely no mainstream Pop or mainstream Rock artist alive today that has the talents, musical diversity, uniqueness, image, impact and charisma that PRINCE embodied. Michael Jackson and David Bowie are gone, so unfortunately cross them off your list. Please excuse me if I don’t consider Madonna as our crowning glory of present day popular music. Some may make the case for Usher, Taylor Swift and Bruno Mars having the same impact as PRINCE; only I feel they all fall just short of PRINCE. American Idol, The X Factor and The Voice never discovered anyone light years close to PRINCE. Nadda.

Lady Gaga is a bona-fide legend; only she copied from PRINCE, David Bowie, Cyndi Lauper and Madonna. Carrie Underwood is an unenergetic singing statue. Metallica just hibernates now and Van Halen are a pale ghost of what they once were. KISS is an iconic band in their own right, only they’ve had plenty of songwriting help over the years and suffered through an identity crisis during the 1980’s. Now you see my point? Seriously. All those boy bands that pop their immature heads out for every generation just plain suck. PRINCE was… PRINCE.

Prince - The Very Best Of - promo album cover pic - #MO099INH

PRINCE may have had his musical influences, still, PRINCE copied no one. Unlike today where it seems as if every mainstream Pop artist (and Country artist for that matter) is feeding off of each other like robotic copycats. Certainly, the Hard Rock and Metal worlds have their copycats too. Who is really left, in the mainstream world of Popular Music that leaves us all in both (original) entertainment and musical awe? The Rolling Stones, Elton John and Paul McCartney are well past their prime and God bless them for still going.

The Who lost their luster back when bassist John Entwistle passed away. Bruce Springsteen? Jon Bon Jovi? Nope. No comparison when it comes to the complete musician and songwriter that PRINCE was. With that said, comparing PRINCE to those aforementioned is comparing apples to cucumbers, in my opinion.

If I had to pick my 2 favorite PRINCE songs, they are: “Raspberry Beret” and “Little Red Corvette”. PRINCE truly was the total musical package. Growing up in the 80’s, PRINCE was an enormous part of American Pop Culture and his songs seemed to be played just about everywhere; from the video arcades to the roller rinks. I learned a long time ago that we cannot take our musical heroes for granted, they are just as human as we and share this planet with us for such a brief period of time. Rest In Peace, PRINCE. – Stone

FAITHSEDGE – Featuring Stryper/Ace Frehley/MR. BIG/Dokken/Hardline Members – Return With New Album

Faithsedge - promo band collage - 2016 - #MOFEILMF933233

Faithsedge is returning with ‘Restoration’, their third and most melodic release to date. Fronted by mastermind singer / songwriter Giancarlo Floridia, the band returns with a stellar line-up featuring Stryper bass player Tim Gaines, Ace Frehley / Mr .Big drummer Matt Starr and former Dokken guitarist Alex De Rosso. Both Keys and production have been handled by Alessandro Del Vecchio (Hardline/ Revolution Saints).

The approach is very melodic with an old school feel: 80’s style hooks, big drums, slamming bass, epic keys and big production. At the same time the album keeps a current up to date feel with lyric content of today’s world mixed with a competitive Metal feel. Giancarlo’s songwriting approach mixed with each members experience and skills takes the album to new heights .

With different supergroups that come and go, Faithsedge is more than just that, the band members worked together as a tight team and the result and chemistry show in the end result. The album will be released on Scarlet Records in Europe and North America on June 24th and on Spiritual Beast in Japan, Korea, China, Hong Kong and Taiwan on June 15th.

Fiery First Track “Shapes” To Be Released May 9th

U.S. TOUR WITH WHITESNAKE THIS SUMMER

Stops include, Dallas, Houston, Detroit, Philadelphia, NYC and beyond

_________________________

(Los Angeles, CA – April 12, 2016) The dynamic duo of Whitford/St. Holmes are ready to reunite and reclaim the rock magic they first produced over thirty years ago! Featuring Aerosmith guitarist, Brad Whitford and Ted Nugent vocalist/guitarist, Derek St. Holmes, the duo of Whitford/St. Holmes is back together and ready to release their exciting new studio album this June, with a nationwide tour immediately following.

It was 1981 when Whitford, who had left Aerosmith, first teamed up with Derek St. Holmes to release their self-titled debut. Tracks like “Sharpshooter” and “Whisky Woman” carried on the stadium rock n roll style that made them famous. The album received critical acclaim and they did a successful round of tour dates before returning to their respective bands and shelving the duo. Until now!

Recently, the two friends found themselves living in the same town on the outskirts of Nashville. While working on some catch up time, they decided to revamp their collaboration. After writing a number of songs, the duo recruited bassist Chopper Anderson, keyboardist Buck Johnson and on drums, Tesla’s Troy Luccketta to record the album. Self-produced by Whitford and St. Holmes, the album was recorded at The Castle Studios in Franklin, TN.

12003946_915667058506621_5519319834275482281_n

Whitford and St. Holmes, who have collectively been part of 10s of millions of record sales as part of Aerosmith and Ted Nugent, know the true purpose of their art. “It’s hard to believe we first jammed over 30 years ago,” states Brad Whitford. Derek St. Holmes adds,“ We are excited for this record to get out there, we want to share it with our friends, all those hardcore rock ‘n’ roll fans… Like our fans and good Whiskey we all seem to get better with age. These new cuts are bold, brassy and ballsy we can’t wait to play them live.”

The band will head out on tour this June with Whitesnake. The tour launches on June 3rd in Dallas and continues on through Texas, Indianapolis, Ohio, Detroit, Boston and more. This leg of the tour will conclude on July 1st with a headline show. More Whitford/St. Holmes headline shows are expected to be announced shortly.

JORN – New Cover Song Album “Heavy Rock Radio” Releasing On June 3rd, via Frontiers Music SRL

Posted in classic rock, Hard Rock, Heavy Metal, Metal, Music, news, rock music with tags , , , , , , on April 12, 2016 by Metal Odyssey

Jorn Lande - - Jorn - Heavy Rock Radio - promo cover pic - 2016 - #MO0990ILMWF33

BREAKING NEWS: Frontiers Music Srl is excited to announce JORN’s new album, Heavy Rock Radio, due for release on June 3rd! One of the greatest rock singers of our time, Jorn Lande returns with a unique album of covers of classics from artists and bands that have meant something special to him and helped forge this talented man’s own unique style.

Through Jorn’s extensive career, which includes more than 40 albums of mostly original songs, he has also recorded great versions of several rock classics such as Thin Lizzy‘s “Are You Ready”, UFO‘s “On and On”, Deep Purple‘s “Perfect Strangers”, and many more. Jorn also recorded a successful Ronnie James Dio tribute album, released in 2010. Every song JORN covers is treated with the utmost respect and “Jorn-ized” accordingly. A good example is his heavy sounding version of “I Walk Alone”, first released by Tarja Turunen (ex-Nightwish).

“Heavy Rock Radio” is not an ordinary album of cover songs, it is truly a songbook of hits. Featured – among others – are great versions of the Eagles‘ “Hotel California” and Kate Bush’s “Running Up That Hill”, which gets the Jorn style treatment to become very powerful and epic, without losing its commercial touch. More great classics included are John Farnham’s “You’re The Voice”, Queen‘s “Killer Queen”, and two absolute melodic rock evergreen gems in Journey‘s “Don’t Stop Believin'” and Foreigner‘s “Rev On The Red Line”.

The original concept of the album was to create a sort of jukebox of radio hits, but to avoid leaning too much on the pop side of rock, JORN decided to blend the track listing with a few more up tempo rock tracks as well, such as “The Final Frontier” by Iron Maiden (“probably the closest you get to anything commercial with Iron Maiden,” says Jorn), “Live to Win” by Paul Stanley (a song which was also featured on the popular television series South Park), and a few hard rock classics show up as well from Deep Purple (“Stormbringer”), Dio (“Rainbow In The Dark”) and Black Sabbath (“Die Young”) to complete the mix.

Jorn says: “The most important thing was to treat these songs with respect towards the original versions, my goal was always to think that the original artist would be honoured and find my version relevant. At the same time my intention was never to try to compete with the original song and artist, but make it a strong alternative version to enjoy. At the same time it is a well deserved homage to these artists and bands, who influenced me strongly, and I have wanted to record these songs for quite some time but was always too busy writing and recording my own songs to make it happen. Originally I had a list of 40-50 songs I wanted to do, but I had to strip it down to about 15 songs before deciding on the final track list. This means that there are some unfinished business musically, and I will most likely record more of these songs in the future.”

Jorn Lande - publicity pic - 2016 - #MO9339ILMWF

Jorn Lande

Since releasing the critically acclaimed Dracula “Swing of Death” album last year, Jorn has also been working on an album of brand new songs, which will be the successor to the 2013 Jorn album “Traveller”, to be released in early 2017. Jorn’s catalogue is getting too long to include in brief press statements, and his innovative and creative skills have led to him selling millions of albums worldwide and being a frequent entry on sales charts around the world including Billboard. Worth a mention is his years with German based MasterPlan, whom he recorded three albums with. Claimed to be the biggest selling Norwegian musical export, since the pop band A-ha, Jorn continues his rock crusade, and there are no signs of him slowing down yet.

The title “Heavy Rock Radio” came quite naturally, as the sound of this album feels like if it’s tailor-made for any rock radio station, and while Jorn’s voice can be enjoyed on more than 40 albums in different rock and metal styles, this record is a special treat which will tide over all the fans waiting for the new original album which is being worked on at the moment. Enjoy!

Metal Odyssey’s Stone Has Several Very Brief Rants…

Posted in classic rock, Hard Rock, Heavy Metal, Metal, Music, news, rock music with tags , , , on April 7, 2016 by Metal Odyssey

Stone - Metal Odyssey - biting pillow - 2015 - #MO990099

Guns N’ Roses are having a reunion tour! Who gives a shit!? Not me.

GHOST won a 2016 Grammy for “Best Metal Performance” and… who gives a shit!

AC/DC are gonna tour with “guest” lead singers. AC/DC might as well see if Jim Nabors and/or Anne Murray are available to sing for them too.

What the freak is Baby Metal? NO, I don’t really give a shit.

IRON MAIDEN is still NOT in the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame, while Madonna was inducted into the hall back in 2008. What a bunch of stupid, stupid shit.

Supposedly, man walked on the moon. Guess what? I’m a billionaire.

Ted Nugent - President - 2016 - #MO99099ILN

A neighbor of mine still has their Christmas tree lit up at night, outside their front door. For real. Now, that’s some crazy shit.

My local Best Buy has Sunday store hours of 11:00AM to 8:00PM. Now, that’s some messed up shit. By the way, my local Walmart, Marathon and Kroger are open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Someone should remind Best Buy that it’s 2016 and NOT 1980.

In the USA, the minimum wage back in 1988 was $3.35 per hour. In 2016, the minimum wage in Ohio is $8.15. You do the math and then look up what our USA politicians are worth. It’s bullshit.

Quiet Riot - circa 1983 - publicity band card - #1984KD

QUIET RIOT will forever have a place in my Metal heart; their #1 studio album Metal Health  is one incredible reason why. Oh, the good-times memories of partying to QUIET RIOT. Whoa. Both Scott Coverdale and I must mention QUIET RIOT to each other at least twice a week; perhaps at times, twice a day.

Without question, QUIET RIOT exploded onto the Heavy Metal scene with their groundbreaking 1983 Metal Health album along with their historic performance at the 1983 US Festival on Heavy Metal Day (March 29). The rest is QUIET RIOT history that shall never be ignored here at Metal Odyssey.

Ratt - promo band card - circa 80's - #MO9909988ILF

Scott Coverdale and I dig RATT. Really, RATT songs embody what 80’s mainstream Heavy Metal was all about: big, booming, melodic, colorful and loaded with charisma. I’ve always stated: once you go RATT, you can’t go back.

Cinderella - classic band logo - purple - 2016 - #MO9933ILMF

Without Cinderella, Philadelphia would only be famous for its ROCKY movies. Truth. Just kidding. Philadelphia is a grand city and being able to experience it for only 1 day in my entire life was a thrill; especially the historic district of Philadelphia. Back to Cinderella… if you don’t dig Cinderella then you are addicted to stale Ritz crackers that have hairy mole spores on them. Truth.

Scott Coverdale and I have seen Cinderella live together, twice. The first time we saw Cinderella live was insanely memorable and that’s another story in itself. Since Cinderella were brought up in one of our conversations recently, Scott and I decided to list our Top 5 Cinderella songs. Just for you. Agree or disagree and please feel free to comment. AC/DC – Any New Singer Now Would Make The Band DC/AC

Posted in classic rock, Hard Rock, Heavy Metal, Music, news, rock music with tags , , , , , on March 21, 2016 by Metal Odyssey

ACDC - Classic Band Logo - #10014

Let’s skip over all the he said/she said baloney and get right to the Metal point here. A new lead singer for AC/DC, at this stage of the game, would be nonsense. Give me a fu*%ing break, please. Back when the legendary Bon Scott passed away and Brian Johnson came on board, the band was young, dynamic and had decades ahead of them to take over the world; as they eventually did. Back in 1980, the Hard Rock world was still evolving by the day, where now Hard Rock has stalled with creativity like a 1972 Ford Pinto.

Without the great Brian Johnson on the mic, AC/DC is over, Angus Young, whether you want to admit it or not. Guest vocalist doesn’t cut it here; it would still be a new vocalist whether we all like it or not. There comes a time in life when you realize it’s over and even Michael Jordan and Derek Jeter figured that out. It is what it is and AC/DC pretty much was.

ACDC - Back In Black - promo album cover pic - #1980

Drummer Phil Rudd got himself in hefty legal trouble and is no longer with the band, while Malcolm Young has health issues and is no longer with the band too. To top it all off with a brand new singer, AC/DC would just become DC/AC. Sure, there was Van Halen having Sammy Hagar step in; only any fan knows that band was really Van Hagar. Van Halen III was an anomaly and (good guy) Gary Cherone is certainly not at fault for that. Queen has proven to me that they are just a super all-star band without the iconic Freddie Mercury. Brian May couldn’t leave well enough alone, in my Metal opinion.

I absolutely love Queensrÿche and when super-talented Todd La Torre replaced the enigmatic Geoff Tate I was stunned. Still, that lead singer change made perfect sense (IMO) due to the surrounding circumstances of that time and Queensrÿche is not Led Zeppelin, KISS, The Who or The Rolling Stones either. Queensrÿche have more than paid their dues and are back stronger than ever. Again, it was different circumstances. A new lead singer for AC/DC in 2016 would equate to the New York Yankees moving to Nebraska. It’s just not a good idea at all.

ACDC - For Those About To Rock We Salute You - promo cover pic - #1981BJAY

I could go on and on with comparisons of world-famous bands changing lead singers; only it would not change my mind about AC/DC saying adios to Brian Johnson. I have my incredible memories of seeing AC/DC live and own their entire (U.S.) discography. I grew up with AC/DC and this band’s music has done wonders for me, through thick and thin! I am not about to embrace an AC/DC Part III now, even if the lead singer were to be someone famous and that I respect dearly. In the end, a new/guest singer for AC/DC would make this iconic band into a revival band of themselves. How do you feel about this? Leave a comment or a rant. Get it off your Metal chest. Metal Be Thy Name. – Stone
