Scott Coverdale Gets “Hooterized” By “Both Sides Live / The Electric Factory” From The Hooters

The Hooters - The 30th Anniversary Fan Collection - promo cover pic - #2011THMO0221

As a curious crusader of reflecting on my youth in the 80’s, I started recollecting some of the concerts I saw with my buddies from 1984 to 1989 and tried to remember which shows were good or not so good. We must have seen anywhere between 30 to 40 shows, during that time. Out of nowhere The Hooters came to my mind. I remember seeing them twice as an opening act; once for Bryan Adams and the other time for Loverboy.

As I recall, I thought The Hooters were good and nothing spectacular. As a band I liked quite a few of their songs from their first two studio albums Nervous Night and One Way Home, both of which I owned. After 1987/1988 The Hooters just kind of disappeared from the mainstream Rock scene. To be honest, I really didn’t seek out any new material this band may have recorded.

Now that The Hooters were on my mind, I needed to know what I’ve missed from them over the past 25 years. As I did my research, I discovered this band released 4 more studio albums and 2 live albums. My curiosity persuaded me to purchase a four CD mini box import set titled: The 30th Anniversary Fan Collection. This box set was issued in 2010 and includes 2 studio albums, Time Stands Still and 5 X 5 along with 2 live albums Both Sides Live Disc 1 Live At The Electric Factory and Both Sides Live Disc 2 Secret Sessions Live Acoustic. For the purpose of this post I’m only going to focus on the Both Sides Live/The Electric Factory CD 2.

The Hooters - 30th Anniversary Fan Collection - backside cover promo - #2010THMO0221

Above: back cover & complete track list

After listening to this disc for the first time, I was blown away! I never expected to hear such a tremendous Rock N’ Roll album.   The Both Sides Live/The Electric Factory Disc 2 includes 13 tracks from their 6 studio albums. The concert begins with I’m Alive, a song from their Time Stands Still album. This would be the first time I heard this song! It’s an excellent tune that sets the mood for the entire CD. Over the course of the next 12 songs, more than half consist of their big 1980’s hits: Day By Day, Satellite, Johnny B and my favorite All You Zombies. I’ve always loved the beginning of that song and recorded live it’s even better!

In my humble opinion every song on this CD sounds better when performed live, compared to the studio versions. They even ”Hooterized” a cover of the Don Henley song classic Boys of Summer which is quite good. The concert comes to a Rockin’ conclusion with the song Free Again, also from the Time Stands Still album.

If you’re looking for something a little different from the latest Rock Music norm and want to enjoy some phenomenal Rock ‘N’ Roll performed by a bunch of fantastic musicians, I would recommend purchasing this CD from The Hooters. Hopefully, you’ll be singing along to most of the songs just as I did. I’m thrilled that I took a chance on purchasing this Hooters Box set, for after all these years I find the music of the Hooters spectacular. – Scott Coverdale

On This Day In Metal History – February 19th, 1980 – The Passing Of The Legendary Bon Scott

Above is AC/DC Highway To Hell studio album from 1979. From L to R: Malcolm Young, Cliff Williams, Phil Rudd, Angus Young and Bon Scott.

___________________________

February 19th, 1980 – The legendary Bon Scott passed away, at age 33. To think that Bon Scott died way, way too young is an understatement. Back in 1980, I only knew of one song from AC/DC and that was Highway To Hell, due to my local  (Hartford, Connecticut) FM radio stations (WCCC, WHCN, WPLR) playing it and the late, great Casey Kasem spinning it on his American Top 40 syndicated radio program. This was a time when I was discovering Heavy Rock and not realizing AC/DC had a mother load of incredible albums with Bon Scott. Man, did I learn very fast as to who Bon Scott was; it was immediately following his death, unfortunately.

Bon Scott - Classic Rock Magazine - promo cover - UK - July 2004 - #33BSMO

Above: Classic Rock Magazine – UK / July 2004

I can remember my Mother (God rest her beautiful soul) saying to me, upon my holding the Highway To Hell album at our local Caldor department store: not in my house, no sir, bub. Funny thing is, she bought me both Back In Black and Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap on 8-track tapes, upon their releases! What a difference an album cover makes! My Mother probably thought it was an entirely different band on those 8-tracks too. As I’ve stated many times before, my Mother eventually became the most embracing soul for Metal that I could have ever dreamed for.

Bon Scott - ACDC - Classic Rock magazine cover - #2014BSMO

Above: Classic Rock Magazine – Germany / January 2014

The eventual release of AC/DC’s Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap, in the USA, only super solidified that the late Bon Scott was a tried and true Hard Rock legend and his legacy was to live on forever. This great album finally hit American shores in September of 1981. As the FM radio stations began to play this album’s title song and Big Balls, it was as if Bon Scott never left us at all! Yes, Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap was released earlier in 1976 for AC/DC’s homeland of Australia and (maybe) other countries; yet this album released within fourteen months of Back In Black and I easily became a simultaneous fan of both AC/DC eras.

Hard Force Magazine - Bon Scott - Fr- Jan - 1990 - #33BSMO

Above: Hard Force Magazine – France / January 1990

To this day, I will listen to the Bon Scott era of AC/DC just as much as the Brian Johnson era. In my Metal heart, I do believe Bon Scott to be the better vocalist, out of the two. My favorite Bon Scott sung AC/DC song of all-time is: Touch Too Much. This unreal great song is featured on Highway To Hell. Touch Too Much never received the FM radio airplay it deserved; at least not in Connecticut where I grew up. There are dozens of other songs that psyche me out that Bon Scott sings; not listing them all here doesn’t make a difference at all. My main Metal thought of today is remembering the late and great Bon Scott and thanking him for all his timeless music and unique voice. Bon Scott can never be equalled. Rest in peace, Bon Scott. – Stone

KISS – On This Day In METAL History – February 18th, 1974 – KISS Released Their Legendary Debut / Self-Titled Studio Album

Posted in classic rock, Hard Rock, Heavy Metal, Metal, Music, rock music with tags , , , , on February 18, 2015 by Metal Odyssey

KISS - Debut Album - promo cover pic!!

On this day in KISSTORY – February 18, 1974KISS released their self-titled debut album, via Casablanca Records. I have to pinch myself, realizing that this KISS album is 41 years old! This was a phenomenal debut album from the iconic KISS, a launching pad to eventual world super stardom that continues to this very hour. Here was a debut Heavy Rock album that featured three singers. How many bands of any Rock genre pulled that off back then or now? The great Ace Frehley didn’t even sing on this album; how crazy is that?

Black Diamond is my favorite song that the awesome Peter Criss has ever sung, even though I will always dig his power ballad, Beth, from 1976’s KISS album Destroyer. The fascinating aspect about this KISS album is that it gave Rock fans three singers that did not sound alike. Paul Stanley, Gene Simmons and Peter Criss were and still are so unique, vocally, that it’s alarming in a grand way.

KISS - band logo from debut album - #1974KMO

This album features such KISS classics: Strutter, Firehouse, Cold Gin, Deuce, 100,000 Years and Black Diamond. These are songs that have remained relevant to this day, in my Metal opinion. Strutter and Black Diamond are two KISS songs that I couldn’t live without, for Metal sakes! To this day I love the rawness of sound that this KISS debut radiates. This was not a polished album, by any stretch of the Metal imagination. To remaster this KISS album is a Metal sin.

I was only eight years old when this KISS album was released. I had absolutely no idea KISS even existed at that tender age. At eight years old, all I cared about was the Saturday morning cartoons, coloring books, bugs and my Matchbox car collection. Back then, it was a different culture in America, with (of course) no internet, cell phones or social networks. Little kids like myself were able to enjoy childhood and not be rushed into pre-adulthood; little kids of today cannot even be seen in the toy aisles of Super Walmart. Instead, I have to navigate myself around little kids swarming the computers, cell phones and accessories at Best Buy; and these same little kids are crabbing at their parents, while wearing Slipknot tee shirts and $200 sneakers. You get the point, hopefully.

KISS - Debut Album - promo cover pic!!

Is it accurate for me to state that both KISS and their debut album were ahead of their time? I lean towards thinking so. From reading those early album reviews of that time period, I don’t believe the early Rock critics knew what to think or write about KISS. Back in 1974, Rolling Stone magazine was still in a full-throttle state of Flower Power. Heck, the Summer Of Love was only six or so years prior to this KISS album’s release. Jimi Hendrix, Black Sabbath, The Who, Cream, Free, Led Zeppelin and Alice Cooper already introduced the world to the building blocks of Heavy Metal, thus KISS realistically did get in line when it came to Hard and Heavy Rock. Still, the pioneering Hard Rock and Heavy Metal credentials of this KISS debut album cannot be overlooked.

KISS did break loose with an original sound of melodic heaviness and their stage makeup, image and costumes were and still are stuff of marketing genius. The influence of KISS upon other bands to this day cannot be disputed and it all began with this seminal debut album. Would KISS have been embraced any less by Rock fans if there were no makeup or costumes involved? I guess we’ll never know. Thank God for that.

KISS - band logo from debut album - #1974KMO

The first time I ever owned this terrific album was my sophomore year in high school and I obtained it through a trade with a fellow classmate. Whenever an iconic album such as this KISS debut comes up for discussion, I cannot help myself from being nostalgic about the past. For me, remembering the past is celebrating the past. It is albums such as this KISS debut from 1974 that enabled our Hard Rock and Heavy Metal communities to grow and persevere these past four decades. KISS, along with their select peers, paved the way for us all to enjoy the heavy music we embrace today and the KISS debut album will always be a treasure in my Metal world. This KISS album I could never take for granted. Metal be thy name. – Stone

TNT “30th Anniversary 1982 – 2012 Live In Concert” – A Metal Odyssey Album Review

TNT - 30th Anniversary - 1982 - 2012 - Live album promo cover pic - #2014TH

5 METAL Fists Out Of 5!

Metalfistredbckgrndsmall5

Norway’s legendary TNT released a live 19 song album and its full proper title is: 30th Anniversary 1982-2012 Live In Concert With Trondheim Symphony Orchestra. This album was released back on November 10th of 2014. With the legendary Tony Harnell being such an important member in the history of TNT, it is only fitting that this symphonic Heavy Metal concert features him on vocals. Anytime Tony Harnell rejoins TNT, it’s fine to me! With the uncertainty of TNT’s future with or without Tony Harnell aside, this live album is a steel-solid must for every TNT and Classic Heavy Metal and Hard Rock fan.

This album marks the third official live album from TNT and each one features Tony Harnell on vocals. Tony Harnell was the lead singer and co-songwriter on eight consecutive TNT studio albums, from 1984 to 2005. If you are unfortunate to not have experienced TNT in concert (like myself) then this live album (and its live predecessors) will be as close as you can get in taking in a TNT concert. It took me many listens to this album to confidently give it such high praise; the more I listened, the more I have absorbed the details.

TNT - promo band pic - #2014TNTTHMO

Above: Tony Harnell fronted TNT

The grandiose element of featuring all three lead singers from TNT’s legendary Hard Rock history on this album, makes for fantastic fraternity. Original vocalist Dag Ingebrigtsen and post-Tony Harnell era vocalist Tony Mills are also featured during this recorded concert. The great Tony Mills remains an outstanding vocalist and had carried the vocalist torch with TNT for more than a few years, singing on TNT’s last three studio albums.

We are always at the mercy of the live recording and rely on a conscientious and true production. With this live TNT album, there are many musical aspects to this concert; the symphony, the band, vocals, backing vocals and guitar solos. That may be nothing new, however, when listening to a live album such as this, everything needs to come together in close to perfection sonically, as if I was actually sitting in the arena where it all happened. I believe TNT succeeded in delivering a memorable live experience to my ears, anyways.

TNT - Live Concert Pic - Tony Harnell - #2014THTNTMO

Above: L to R: Tony Harnell and Ronni Le Tekrø

Tony Harnell is (per usual) top-tier vocally and these TNT vocalists could be considered to be unknowingly dueling with the symphony orchestra at times. In reality, this is still a recording and capturing for digital download or CD every vocal nuance spot-on, with so much spectacular music being performed, is not going to be an easy task. TNT as a unit are nothing short of fabulous, these are incredible musicians that seem to fit perfectly with the Trondheim Symphony Orchestra, this is the Electric Light Orchestra meets TNT, if you will, only super better. After so many listens to this album, it just all makes 100% sense to me.

TNT - 30 year anniversary - promo logo - 1982 - 2012

Rest assured, TNT rocks-it-out on this album and the captured sounds of the fans in attendance only elevates the rockin’ psyched out mood and atmosphere. When the Trondheim Symphony Orchestra kicks into Sabre Dance on track #11, it’s as if the musical magic can still be non-Metal at times in my life. My favorite songs on this live album are, in no particular order: Invisible Noise, Northern Lights, My ReligionEddieIntuition, Magica Lanterna, the swingin’ June and the insane grand guitar solo by the great Ronni Le TekrøNorthern Lights, Eddie and Magica Lanterna are songs that create goose bump city all over my face and arms. Yup. I will enjoy this TNT 30th Anniversary live album for the rest of my Metal life. Metal be thy name. – Stone

Sam Andrew was a founding member and guitarist for Big Brother And The Holding Company, which featured the late and great Janis Joplin on vocals. Sam Andrew was also a singer, songwriter, composer and artist. Metal Odyssey extends condolences to the family, friends and bandmates of Sam Andrew.

Below is the statement regarding Sam Andrew’s passing, which was posted on the Big Brother and the Holding Company Facebook page:

Dear Friends,

Yesterday, ten weeks after his heart attack and the open-heart surgery that followed it, Sam lost his gallant fight to hold onto the life he lived so well. He died peacefully in Elise’s arms at 5:15 pm. There will be much more to say about him in the days to come and there will come a time when we will gather together to remember him. Now is a time for Elise to re-gather her strength after the long vigil she has kept and the vital role she played in overseeing Sam’s care. For now we can all remember him in our own ways until we can remember him together. He lived his life in music and art and a loving marriage. It doesn’t get much better than that.

The great Billy Idol makes a cameo appearance in this film too! The acting chemistry between Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore is really fabulous stuff, in my Metal opinion.

I highly recommend this movie if you haven’t already seen it. I just dig the storyline, acting and funny atmosphere of this movie. I believe I’ve seen this picture about 25 times now! The Wedding Singer was written by Tim Herlihy and directed by Frank Coraci. Yes, The Wedding Singer is… Metal.

Metal Odyssey’s FAIL Of The Day Is: Dee Snider

Posted in classic rock, Hard Rock, Heavy Metal, Music, rock music with tags , , , , on February 12, 2015 by Metal Odyssey

Dee Snider - Doug Aldrich - promo Metal Odyssey banner - February 12 - 2015

This post is about not knowing when to keep you mouth shut and mean-spirited comments to yourself; especially when you’re in the national and world spotlight of Hard Rock and Heavy Metal. This is also a lesson learned that internet bullying can come from ALL phases of life and social levels. Please read on…

My how time can change a person for the worst, especially with Dee Snider. A long time ago, actually it was September 19th, 1985, this Heavy Metal ambassador and frontman of Twisted Sister testified in a heroic way, before the Senate Commerce, Science and Transportation Committee, defending the lyrical content of popular Rock, Hard Rock and Heavy Metal songs; especially songs from Twisted Sister. It’s a long story, however, a wealthy, constipated and obviously bored group of Senate housewives known as the PMRC decided they wanted to ban and suppress the songs of the day, using their list of Filthy Fifteen as an example. You can read all about this historically embarrassing event and its proceedings by clicking the link below:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Parents_Music_Resource_Center

I once even wrote about my appreciation for Dee Snider and I called him A True American Metal Hero, back on March 18th, 2009. Since then, Dee Snider is starting to sound more like the bitter and cranky uncle you always dread listening to or seeing during family functions. You can read my post I wrote regarding A True American Metal Hero, below:

DEE SNIDER IS A TRUE AMERICAN METAL HERO

Anyone who follows Dee Snider knows he can be arrogant, cocky and condescending towards other bands and musicians on radio and Twitter. Wether that type of behavior is for ratings or is straight from Dee Snider’s heart is up for debate; nonetheless, Dee Snider can say anything he wants, due to the First Amendment (free speech) to the United States Constitution in America. Fine. I’m down with that. That’s why I am writing this post today, due to my free speech.

Below you shall see/read how Dee Snider singled out for no apparent reason, the former guitarist and songwriter of Whitesnake: Doug Aldrich. Plus, Dee Snider is basically telling the great founding member, songwriter and lead singer of Whitesnake, David Coverdale, that the last two Whitesnake studio albums are not of importance.

Dee Snider - Doug Aldrich comments - February - 2015 - Twitter posts

See below, the professional response from Doug Aldrich to Dee Snider, via his Twitter account. Please note I totally support Doug Aldrich calling Dee Snider a Jackass too.

Dough Aldrich - twitter response to Dee Snider - February - 2015 - #33JA

Then, the bitter Dee Snider replied to Doug Aldrich with a half-hearted and backhanded apology:

Dee Snider - Twitter apology to Doug Aldrich - February - 2015 - #4DSJA

Um, Dee, what point is valid? You never made your point!! You had to retract and apologize to Dough Aldrich; if you even can call that an apology! Dee Snider, your choice of words are unprofessional. That’s it, plain as day and the above Twitter comment YOU directed at Doug Aldrich is PROOF.

I felt insulted for Dough Aldrich. I also felt insulted as a fan and blogger of Hard Rock and Heavy Metal. Dee Snider overreached with his careless commentary. I have been a long-time admirer of Dough Aldrich and his fantastic work with Whitesnake, DIO, LION, Bad Moon Rising, Burning Rain and Revolution Saints. Below was my Twitter response to both Dee Snider and Dough Aldrich, in regards to the above blow-hard Twitter comments made by Dee Snider:

Stone - Metal Odyssey - twitter responses to Dee Snider - Doug Aldrich - February - 2015 - #77JA

Hey Dee Snider, if your “point is valid” then we can all discount the achievements that Brian Johnson made for AC/DC and the achievements that Tommy ThayerEric Singer and the late Eric Carr have made for KISS. Those iconic bands had “heydays” before their arrivals too. Jake E. Lee and Zakk Wylde? Nah. Those two guitarists and songwriters can’t lay a single claim to the “heyday” success of Ozzy Osbourne.

Plus, how dare if Jason Newsted or Robert Trujillo ever take a bow for the success of the mighty Metallica. Let’s discredit all the Judas Priest albums that have Scott Travis as the drummer; hell, Scott Travis wasn’t with Judas Priest during the 70’s and 80’s.

Below are the Twitter responses from the professional and legendary Michael Sweet of Stryper fame. Michael Sweet is a CLASS ACT and noted the apology made by Dee Snider to Doug Aldrich. However, the initial insult was still made and words truly do hurt.

Michael Sweet - response one - to Dee Snider - twitter - February 2015 - #7771

Michael Sweet - twitter response - 2 - to Dee Snider - February 2015 - #7772

If it wasn’t for Doug Aldrich, these two amazing Whitesnake studio albums would not exist:

Whitesnake – Forevermore – 2011

Before you go shooting your thoughts off on Twitter, LEARN your Hard Rock and Heavy Metal history, Dee Snider!! YOU are out of touch with the accomplishments of your musical peers. I can count on one hand the amount of live shows you do in one year with Twisted Sister. The last Twisted Sister album was released back in 1987. 1987!! And… that album was supposed to be YOUR solo album too! Laugh out loud!!

Dee Snider - Dee Does Broadway - promo CD cover pic - #3375JAMO

Above: This is how relevant Dee Snider is to Metal.

Dee Snider, you are all tied up in knots due to the fact that too numerous 1980’s bands to mention are enjoying a resurgence by touring constantly, creating NEW studio albums and earning a fan base of younger generations by reaching out in positive ways. YOU are jealous, Dee, of the hard-nosed work ethic of a Doug Aldrich and his many hard-working musical peers. The truth can be alarming, huh Dee? DEE, YOU HAVE RESTED ON YOUR LAURELS FOR TOO LONG NOW AND FANS LIKE MYSELF HAVE GROWN VERY TIRED OF IT.

Thumbs down - red - promo pic - MO - #2015TDR

Hey Dee Snider… your Desperado and Widowmaker projects created some excellent music; only they were a flash in the pan!! Criticizing Doug Aldrich is criticizing the entire Whitesnake family, their fans and especially… HELLO… David Coverdale. YOU are NOT worthy of carrying Doug Aldrich’s guitar case, Dee Snider. A true American hero? I wish I NEVER wrote that post about you now. Now go hide behind your radio microphone and Twitter account, Dee. BYE, BYE.

FM – Melodic Rock Legends Releasing “Heroes & Villains” On April 17th, via Frontiers Music Srl

Posted in classic rock, Hard Rock, melodic rock, Music, rock music with tags , , , , on February 9, 2015 by Metal Odyssey

FM - Heroes & Villains - promo album cover pic - 2015 - #77FrontiersMO

Arguably the UK’s finest purveyors of Melodic Rock music, FM will release their new studio album “Heroes & Villains” on April 17th in Europe and April 21st in North America.

‘Heroes & Villains’ is FM’s (FM official) first release since signing to Frontiers Music Srl, and follows the band’s highly acclaimed 2014 E.P. ‘Futurama’ and sell-out UK arena tour with Foreigner and Europe. FM’s UK tour kicks-off in Bristol on Friday, 1st May, and includes dates in Wolverhampton, Portsmouth, Nottingham, Glasgow, Newcastle and Manchester, with the final night of the tour taking place at London’s O2 Shepherds Bush Empire on Sunday, 10th May and will be anticipated by the band’s eagerly awaited performance at the Frontiers Rock Festival in Trezzo sull’Adda (Milan) Italy on April 11th.

The fourth album since FM reformed in 2007, “Heroes and Villains” sees FM staying true to their musical legacy, offering their classic sound updated, with great songwriting and performances spiced-up by the golden voice of lead vocalist Steve Overland. Self-produced, the recording session took place at Tremolo Studios, before being mixed and mastered at Abbey Road Studios.

The album EPK can be enjoyed below:

Looking forward to the release of ‘Heroes and Villains’, Steve Overland said, “I think we have managed to capture the best elements of what the band are about in 2015. We had great fun making the record and we are all very proud of the finished result. There are big rock anthems in tracks like ‘Diggin’ Up The Dirt’ and ‘Fire and Rain’, and many melodic songs with FM’s trademark hooks and vocal harmonies. There are also not one, but two ballads. One of these (Walking With Angels) is a stripped-down acoustic song, which is something a little different for us.”

The band’s drummer, Pete Jupp, added: “After our shows in November the band was white-hot and the creative juices were in full flow, so the writing and recording process for Heroes and Villains was a prolific and painless affair. We’re looking forward to getting back out on tour, straining at the leash.”

FM - promo band pic - #2014FMMO0209

Merv Goldsworthy, FM’s bassist, agrees: “All the songs all came together really quickly and the recording of the album went without a hitch. Once we started getting the mixes back of the first few songs we knew we were onto something. Heroes & Villains is a little rockier and a little more up tempo than Rockville, and that suits me fine! I’m really looking forward to touring this album this year – bring it on!”

Guitarist Jim Kirkpatrick confirmed what FM fans already know: “We’re on a roll! Some of the tracks on this album are better than anything that the band has ever produced, and Steve’s voice is as good as ever.”

Keyboard player Jem Davis, who has given the album a retro sheen by incorporating a Moog, Mellotron and a healthy dose of Hammond organ, is equally excited: “The band is on fire and the new album sounds HUGE! I think this is going to be an amazing year for FM!”

Randy Rhoads - Immortal The Ultimate Tribute - promo cover pic - #2015RRMO

A lover of classical music, Rhoads had taken initial steps into rock’n’roll as a 16 year old when he formed a band, that soon became Quiet Riot. Rhoads was vaulted to the limelight in 1979 when Ozzy Osbourne chose the relatively unknown guitarist to help shape a new future for him via his band, Blizzard of Oz. The result saw Rhoads co-script two of the most famous albums in hard rock history, Blizzard Of Oz and Diary of A Madman, and rapidly ascended the stairway of fame and recognition for his virtuoso playing and writing. Famed for the way he fused classical flavors with technically-excellent hard rock, Rhoads became one of the most influential lead guitarists in rock.

When he tragically passed away on March 19, 1982 in a plane accident, Rhoads was only 25 years old, but thankfully, the legend of his work, ethos and their continuing influence on a whole new generation of guitarists, has never dimmed.
