Guitar Virtuoso Todd Grubbs Releases Two New Albums – ‘Best Of The Guests’ and ‘Toddities volume 2’

Posted in classic rock, Guitar, guitarists, Hard Rock, Heavy Metal, Music, rock guitarists, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , , on March 24, 2013 by Metal Odyssey

todd grubbs best of the guests - promo cover

Tampa, FL – One of the most talented and innovative guitarists to emerge from Florida, Todd Grubbs has released two new albums digitally in March 2013 – ‘Best Of The Guests’ and ‘Toddities volume 2’. Todd Grubbs, who studied at Berklee College of Music, has been voted ‘Most Outstanding Guitarist’ at the Tampa Bay Music Awards, as well as winning the ‘Most Outstanding Video’ two consecutive years in a row. His guitar prowess has been touted by critics and fans worldwide, and can be witnessed on all his solo albums. Todd has surrounded himself with an array of legendary music artists and musicians which is the inspiration behind the album ‘Best of The Guests’.

‘Best of the Guests’ features Derek Sherinian (Dream Theater, Black Country Communion), Bryan Beller (Steve Vai, Joe Satriani, The Aristocrats), Mike Keneally (Zappa, Solo), Sean Malone (Cynic), Blues Saraceno (Poison, Transmission OK), Chris Poland (Megadeth, Ohm), Don Preston (Zappa), John Wesley (Porcupine Tree), Jerry Outlaw (Bogus Pomp), Pattrick Bettison (Acoustic Alchemy), Mark Prator (Iced Earth), and Ralph Santola (Obituary).

Says Todd, “I have had quite a few amazing players make guest appearances on my albums over the years, so I decided it would be cool to put them all together on one release. I have always been honored that these great musicians would agree to perform on my compositions and their contributions have been stellar across the board. The CD includes one new track I recorded featuring Byran Beller on bass.”

todd grubbs toddities vol 2 - promo cover

Along with Frank Zappa, Grubbs influences, which can be heard throughout both his new releases, range from Steve Vai, John Coltrane, The Beatles, Kate Bush, Jeff Beck, Michael Schenker, Ulli Jon Roth and Adrian Belew.

“Todd takes us to some places we have not been with his playing as well as giving us some of that Zappaesque influenced wild arrangement sensibility that has been a part of his playing for years.” – John Wesley (Porcupine Tree)

The second release is ‘Toddities volume 2’, a collection of esoteric recording by Todd Grubbs. Todd explains, “The CD includes some of my more ‘out there’ recordings that did not fit on other releases. It is really cool how these orphaned songs come together and form their own continuity as if it was a planned out project.”

Currently, Todd is working on a couple of albums worth of vocal tunes with a lot of great singers. Says Todd, “I plan to release at least one of these in 2014. Beyond this I am producing writing and recording with a number of young artists and bands covering a wide variety of styles.”

In closing Todd imparts to his fans and listeners, “I would like to thank everyone who has enjoyed my music over the years, I really love making music and to have people out there that support what I do is amazing esp… with the current music industry situation being in a state of flux so to speak. I have always created my music on my own terms and I am very proud of my work to this point.”

CONNY OCHS – Sophomore LP “Black Happy” From German Singer/Songwriter To See Release Via Exile On Mainstream

Posted in acoustic rock, Guitar, guitarists, Music, rock albums, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , , on February 7, 2013 by Metal Odyssey

Conny Ochs - Black Happy - promo cover pic!

Following his debut solo album, as well as a collaborative LP with Doom legend Scott “Wino” Weinrich, German singer/songwriter CONNY OCHS is now gearing up to release his second solo studio full-length, Black Happy, once again via Exile On Mainstream. Having produced music for over a decade, local fans have endorsed and worshiped the man’s efforts for years. Yet, it was OCHS’ album co-written with Wino and the heavy touring across Europe and North America in support of the record that put him on the international map.

This leads into this new album Black Happy, the title an absolute indication to the atmospheres CONNY OCHS is able to create. Deeply rooted in the blackened parts of the human soul he carves a mixture of melancholy and catharsis into the rough edges of songs that come out so natural, so organic and sonically sparkling. While keeping his approach pure to the heart and the creation limited to just him and his guitar, OCHS reaches a stark authenticity that can only be worshipped. It draws you in, makes you a part of the music and leads to a deep admiration of the tunes, the pain and beauty relatable to everybody who hears them.

Bound to a tradition and history of great acoustic craftsmanship drawn from but not limited to the American continent, CONNY explores the realms of what of your inner self can sonically portray once you are on your own and armed with a guitar and voice. The path has been walked by many before, but that doesn’t make it a worn-out road.

Just like his previous solo album Raw Love Songs and the Heavy Kingdom album with Wino, Black Happy was engineered, mixed and mastered by Thommy Krawallo in Berlin in pure analog fashion. The album is set for official release in Germany on March 1st, throughout the rest of Europe on March 4th, and in North America on April 2nd, on LP, via digital download, and limited wooden box CD. Preorders are available here.

CONNY OCHS is currently embarked on a European tour in advance of the album’s release, with many more live excursions to be confirmed in the coming weeks. View the current list of dates here.

David Kilminster, Guitarist on Roger Waters’ The Wall Tour, Releases Debut Solo CD ‘Scarlet – The Director’s Cut’

Posted in classic rock, classic rock albums, guitarists, Hard Rock, Music, rock guitarists, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , , , on November 28, 2012 by Metal Odyssey

London, UK – Guitar virtuoso David Kilminster, best known for his work with Roger Waters and Keith Emerson, has released his debut solo CD titled Scarlet – The Director’s Cut. David’s radical techniques and mesmerizing sounds have captivated fans and fellow musicians alike worldwide. Named “Guitarist of the Year” by Guitar Magazine in 1991, the recognition propelled him on a super-charged career as a multifaceted guitarist, vocalist, writer, engineer, and producer. Credited by keyboard legend Keith Emerson for inspiring him to go on the road again, David is a familiar figure worldwide to fans of progressive rock. And now, much to the elation of his fans, David is releasing an innovative new CD that will amaze all who listen!

Says David about his new CD, “I guess the album ‘Scarlet – The Director’s Cut’ is just a reflection of all the wonderful music that I grew up listening to on the radio, along with some deeply personal lyrics. It also represents the first time that I’ve ever been let loose in a studio, so I was definitely like a kid in a candy store!!! Hence trying a whole bunch of things I’ve never done before…like singing lead vocals, playing piano and even scoring for a string quartet!”

Fans and critics agree that David Kilminster is one of the most extraordinary talents to emerge from the UK. He is a sought after collaborator, band member and solo performer. After touring for a number of years with such luminaries as John Wetton, Geoff Downes, Carl Palmer, and ELP keyboard Keith Emerson, in 2006 David went on the road with Pink Floyd’s Roger Waters as lead guitarist and vocalist in the extraordinary global staging of ‘The Dark Side of the Moon’. More recently David was seen atop a thirty foot wall playing guitar on Roger Waters ‘The Wall – Live’ tour, which became the highest grossing tour of the year, playing to over 3 million people worldwide!!

David’s work is in a class by itself, encompassing technical mastery and enormous power. His vast musical influences are strongly felt on his new album. Says David, “I have a very eclectic list of influences. Musically, it’s anywhere from Debussy to Bjork, Chet Baker to Led Zeppelin, Bob Marley to Queen…it’s all in there, mixed up in my own unique way…” As far as the title goes, David explains, “I really love the provocative images that the word ‘Scarlet’ conjures up in my head… it’s a very passionate color, and brings to mind characters such as ‘Scarlet O’Hara’ in ‘Gone With The Wind’, ‘The Scarlet Woman’ (the goddess from the mystical system of Thelema), Scarlet Johansson (very cute!!)… and also the Sir Conan Doyle book ‘A Study In Scarlet’, which I believe is where Sherlock Holmes was first introduced. In a way the last reference seems particularly apt, as I feel like this album is my first real introduction into the world of music…”

In closing David has this to impart to his fans and listeners, “There’s so much of my heart, soul, passion and energy in this recording… you can almost see my DNA in the grooves of the CD!!! So I really hope you enjoy the listening experience…”

Guitar Virtuoso James Williams Releases New CD ‘Eclectic Shred’ Featuring Symphony X and James Labrie Members

Posted in Guitar, guitarists, Heavy Metal, heavy metal albums, Metal, metal music, Music, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , on November 18, 2012 by Metal Odyssey

Plano, TX – Much to the excitement of guitarists around the world, guitar virtuoso James Williams has released his new solo CD Eclectic Shred on October 20, 2012. Featuring guest appearances by Mike LePond from Symphony X and Matt Guillroy from James Labrie/Yngwie Malmsteen and released on the Eclectic Shred label, the new CD by James Williams is an exercise in guitar wizardry, the likes of which have not been heard before!

“Quality songs, quality players. Just an honor to work with James Williams and be part of this kick-ass project.” – Mike LePond, Symphony X

Hailing from Tulsa, Oklahoma, James Williams was raised on classical music; his mother was a singer in the church choir and sang Opera locally, and sister sang professionally for the San Francisco Metropolitan Opera for ten years. Composers such as Bach, Vivaldi, Stravinsky, Mozart, Carl Orf, Chopin were all part of James’s early musical vocabulary. By the age 12, Jimi Hendrix became his fascination, followed by guitarists Robin Trower, Larry Carlton, Al Dimeola, Gary Moore, Jeff Beck, Alan Holdsworth, Frank Marino, Yngwie Malmsteen and bands like Thin Lizzy, Deep Purple, Scorpions, ELP, Yes, Boston and Kansas.

James has appeared in Guitar Player Magazine with Mike Varney of Shrapnel Records, who said, “James’s impressive guitar pyrotechnics are highlighted by arpeggios, speed picking, vibrato and guitar harmonies that work together to create inspiring high level passages that sometimes remind me of Yngwie Malmsteen.” James has recorded with the late bassist Wyman Tisdale and also legendary bassist/composer/arranger Marcus Miller. Performances with guitarist Norman Brown, saxophonist Gerald Albright and many other top artists, along with years of exposure to classical, jazz, metal and R&B, James has created a diverse sound that is on the cutting edge of today’s guitarists. Says James,“My inspiration is always to achieve something musical that will last and inspire others.”

In 2011, Magna Carta Records released the critically acclaimed album by James’s under the name X Opus titled ‘The Epiphany CD’; the band was essentially James on all instruments with two vocalists. Sea Of Tranquility raved about the album, “If you like heavy progressive music with celestial lyrical themes you most certainly won’t go wrong if you invest in this one.”

In regards to the outcome of his latest album ‘Eclectic Shred’, James explains, “There is so much diversity in this record it should satisfy the solo hungry guitar fans, the song composition fans, and anyone who likes fusion with odd time signatures, power Symphony X rhythms to Hendrix, Ynwie and classical lovers of guitar and keys.” Adding to his impressive guitar virtuosity, James also plays bass, keyboards, drum programming, along with composing all the symphony arrangements. He also produced and mixed the album at his personal recording facility, X Opus studio.

Says James, “As far as the players on ‘Eclectic Shred’, I am really happy with how that turned out, as it can be a challenge to communicate to guys that are in other parts of the US and can’t come to your studio. However, the players I used were great at doing their thing. I am so happy to be able to have gotten my good friend Mike LePond from Symphony X to play bass on the album – he is a bass god! His timing and interpretation is masterful, and he wrote his own lines and played the way he wanted as he heard it. Mike is the best prog-metal has to offer – Symphony X is my favorite modern metal band and the best out there musically. I got in touch with Matt Guillroy through my good friend Mike Varney, the famed progressive guitar producer who brought us Yngwie and Jason Becker. Matt plays keyboards for James Labrie and has worked with Yngwie – he is better on keys sounding like a guitar than most guitar players. He is a master of the keys and I was so glad to get him on the record shredding solos!” Also included on the recordings are guitarists Dave Thomas and Richard Tull.

In conclusion, James has this to impart to his fans and listeners, “I hope that people benefit spiritually as well as musically from this record.”

NEW ZEALAND BUSINESSMAN – MURRAY BOLTON – IS THE WINNING BIDDER

ALL PROCEEDS DONATED TO THE GERSON INSTITUTE SUPPORTING HOLISTIC CANCER THERAPY

Guitar Played Exclusively Throughout Def Leppard “Rock of Ages” Tour This Summer

______________________________________

(Los Angeles, CA) –In early September, PHIL COLLEN, lead guitarist for the iconic rock band DEF LEPPARD, announced plans for the charitable auction of “Wings” a custom Jackson PC1 guitar that COLLEN had played throughout this summer’s Rock of Ages tour. The auction began exclusively through eBay’s “Giving Works” on September 5th and ended on the morning of September 15th.

Reaching beyond all expectations, the highest bidder paid an amazing $15,000 for the one-of-a-kind guitar.  The lucky winner is New Zealand businessman Murray Bolton. COLLEN personally handed “Wings” over to Bolton a few weeks ago when Murray visited COLLEN’s home.

In an extraordinary act of charity Phil included $5000 of his own to the auction’s total in order to deliver a $20,000 check this past Thursday, November 15th, when he performed live at the San Diego based Gerson Institute.

“I am very excited to present this check to the people at the Gerson Institute”, said Collen. “Meeting Murray and handing over “Wings” was bitter-sweet. I really grew to love that guitar but am so happy that it’s going to a great home and the money will help so many more people.”

November is Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Month, a more than appropriate time for COLLEN himself to introduce the auction’s winner and present the check to the Gerson Institute, a San Diego based non-profit organization dedicated to promoting the Gerson Therapy, an alternative treatment for cancer and other degenerative diseases.

In early 2012 Jake Willoughby, a guitar and music store owner, asked COLLEN if he would assist in helping to raise money towards the fight against cancer with Jake’s mother Connie having just passed away from pancreatic cancer after a courageous 13-month fight. By tragic coincidence Phil’s own father, Kenneth succumbed to the same disease in 2004. Jake donated a PHIL COLLEN signature guitar, the Jackson PC1 from his music store. In the spirit of hope it was named “Wings”. Mike Learn, a noted artist whose graphics are well-known in the guitar world, donated the graphic custom paint job on the guitar. Ironically, Mike also lost two family members to the same disease.

DEF LEPPARD LEAD GUITARIST – PHIL COLLEN – To Auction Custom Guitar For Charity; All Proceeds To Be Donated To The GERSON INSTITUTE Supporting A Holistic Cancer Therapy

Guitar Played Exclusively Throughout Def Leppard “Rock of Ages” Tour This Summer

(Los Angeles, CA) –PHIL COLLEN, lead guitarist for the iconic rock band DEF LEPPARD, announces plans for a charitable auction of “Wings”, a custom Jackson PC1 guitar that Collen has played throughout this summer’s Rock of Ages tour.  The auction, taking place exclusively on eBay, will begin on September 5th and end September 14th, the last date of the tour.  The winner will be announced in November which is Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Month and all proceeds from the auction will benefit the Gerson Institute, a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting the Gerson Therapy, an alternative treatment for cancer and other degenerative diseases.

In early 2012, Jake Willoughby, a guitar and music store owner, asked Collen if he would assist in helping to raise money towards the fight against cancer with Jake’s mother having just passed away from pancreatic cancer after a courageous 13-month fight.  By tragic coincidence Phil’s own father, Kenneth succumbed to the same disease in 2004.  Jake donated a Collen signature guitar, the Jackson PC1 from his music store. In the spirit of hope it was named “Wings”.  Mike Learn, a noted artist whose graphics are well-known in the guitar world, donated the graphic custom paint job on the guitar.  Ironically, Mike lost two family members to the same disease.

Phil began researching companies that were not only looking to prevent cancer, but also reverse its devastating effects.  He initially had heard about The Gerson Institute located in San Diego, CA from Jeni Cook, a raw foods chef and the wife of Sex Pistols and Manraze drummer, Paul Cook.  As Phil watched “The Gerson Miracle” DVD he was incredibly moved by their cause wishing he would have known about them before his father passed. The Gerson Institute is a non-profit organization in San Diego, California dedicated to providing education and training in the Gerson Therapy – an alternative, non-toxic treatment for cancer and other chronic degenerative diseases. The Gerson Therapy, developed by Dr. Max Gerson in the 1920s, activates the body’s extraordinary ability to heal itself through an organic, vegetarian diet, raw juices, detoxification, and natural supplements. Since this powerful, natural treatment boosts the body’s own immune system, it is an effective method for treating not only cancer, but a variety of degenerative diseases including arthritis, heart disease, allergies, and skin tuberculosis.

Dr. Gerson began developing the Therapy while looking for a way to manage his own debilitating migraines, a path that lead him to a holistic understanding of medicine that is finally gaining growing acceptance.

This year marks a number of anniversaries for COLLEN, namely the 30th anniversary of his joining Def Leppard as lead guitarist making his debut on the 10x platinum (in the USA) album Pyromania.  In addition, this year marks the 25th anniversary for the 13x platinum (USA) album Hysteria, as well as the 20th anniversary of its 5x platinum (USA) follow-up Adrenalize.

JOE WALSH “Analog Man” – Some Fun & Random Thoughts From Stone (Part Six)

Posted in classic rock, classic rock albums, guitarists, Hard Rock, hard rock albums, Music, rock and roll, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , , on August 18, 2012 by Metal Odyssey

Joe Walsh saw his eleventh studio album, Analog Man, released back on June 5th, 2012. Since then, I’ve thoroughly enjoyed this album’s songs from top to bottom; so much so, that I’ve written five Fun & Random Thoughts posts regarding this entertaining work. Now, you are reading the sixth such post!

Lyrically, Analog Man is filled with Joe’s real life experiences and Fishbone is one fine example. Fishbone is a funny song, only the story behind this song is not that humorous at all; at least to me it isn’t. Regardless, Joe Walsh has a unique way of turning a scary personal story into something “funny” to reflect upon. Joe Walsh explained the story behind this song in the liner notes of Analog Man. Here’s the story behind Fishbone, as I’ve kept it in fewest words as possible:

Joe’s wife had a fishbone (unfortunately) get stuck in her throat, while at a dinner party in Monte Carlo. She had to fly home to Los Angeles to have the fishbone removed from her throat. That poor woman. That’s scary stuff! I couldn’t imagine having any kind of bone getting stuck in my throat! Based on the lyrics of Fishbone, Joe’s wife obviously had a trying experience and eventual positive outcome. Thank God for that.

____________________________

Fishbone can get nasty, fishbone ain’t your friend – Joe Walsh

Trust me, the lyrics to Fishbone are funny and still I wince while listening to them. I just feel so bad for Joe’s wife having to go through such a terrible ordeal with a fishbone getting stuck in her throat. If this song has taught me any lessons, it’s you can’t take life for granted. Nor can you take life too seriously; especially when an outcome to a frightening experience or event turns out well. I’m sure if the outcome to this story was (gasp) something worse, then Joe Walsh would never have written such a lyrically funny song about it. I would hope so, anyway.

Musically, Fishbone is classic Joe Walsh. Semi-funky and loaded with guitar licks that ooze out from every crevice is Fishbone. Throw in some electronic artfulness on vocals for a second or two and Fishbone is a hidden gem of a song on Analog Man.

____________________________

Since we’re on the topic of Fishbone, here is a (topically related) album I’ve been reminded of:

Yes, that’s Fishbone’s seventh studio album titled: Still Stuck In Your Throat. This cool album was initially released in Europe, back in 2006. The Alt/Rock, Funk Metal and Ska Punk band known as… Fishbone. Whoever said the Rock Music world wasn’t intertwined in some mystical way should have their head examined for malfunction. Metal be thy name.

New CD From Original Fleetwood Mac Guitarist Jeremy Spencer To Be Released Worldwide On August 28, 2012

Posted in classic rock, classic rock albums, guitarists, Music, rock albums, rock and roll, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , , , on July 24, 2012 by Metal Odyssey

July 24, 2012 – San Francisco, CA – On April 21st, legendary guitarist Jeremy Spencer, an original member of Peter Green’s Fleetwood Mac, member of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, and featured artist on Propelz, released a limited edition double vinyl album titled ‘Bend In The Road’ for International Record Store Day.

The release packs a “vintage vibe” by way of Jeremy’s handmade touch, fusing his artistry as a consummate slide guitarist, singer/songwriter, interpreter, and illustrator. His evocative watercolor graces the timeless gatefold cover, recalling enduring albums when records were the sum of their parts and made with consequence. Within is an equally crafted collection of songs coming from the deepest core of his heart. He sounds as authentically tasty and fiery as ever, displaying a far wider guitar palette, insight, and conviction that have continued to evolve since his long absence from the public eye. On August 28, 2012 Jeremy Spencer’s ‘Bend In The Road’ will be released on CD worldwide with a new package design.

In Fleetwood Mac, Jeremy shared the spotlight with reticent star-super nova Peter Green, embodying Elmore James riffs and vocals obsessively and uncannily. He possessed an equal fervor and absolute command of quintessential early Rock and Roll, personifying personal hero Buddy Holly and his ilk spot on. On ‘Bend In The Road,’ the Elmore and Buddy influences and impeccable Blues and Rock rendering remain intact and vibrant, while also present is a new collaborative nature. He selflessly trades guitar licks and support with Brett Lucas (the young Detroit guitarist and aficionado who co-produced the album and whose band augments the proceedings) in the way Green and Kirwan shared on the iconic “Albatross”, the torching “Like It This Way” and the introspective “World In Harmony”.

_____________________________

On the album’s elegant “Merciful Sea”, producer Brett managed to persuade Jeremy to reveal his hereto unsung, intimate, and affecting piano playing for all to marvel. Throughout the full 32 tracks recorded at this time, one can hear an expansive range of influences from Django to Marty Robbins. Jeremy plays effortlessly while seamlessly incorporating these influences and making them his own, as natural and easy of a fit as that of his beloved ceramic slides.

This record is a career culmination of technique meeting soul that has a transcendent, “Layla-esque,” quality. With its escalating and emotive sequence of songs, which are spiritually driven and invested (recalling LPs of yore, but without sounding dated), the album instead sounds intoxicatingly assured, relaxed, and out of the blue resonant.

The Special Limited 2-LP Gatefold Edition released on Record Store Day, April 21st, 2012, contains 17 tracks, 4 of which are exclusive: Jambo, Strange Woman, The Sun is Shining, and Blind Lover (but without the song Homework, which only appears on the CD).

In 2006 Jeremy Spencer released his album ‘Precious Little’, which met with enthusiastic reviews and marked a new beginning for Jeremy after virtually disappearing from the music world for 33 years.

Press surrounding ‘Bend In The Road’ includes:

“I had chills up my spine listening to it tonight, and when I heard ‘Aphrodite’ the first time a few days ago, I was literally right back into ‘Then Play On’ territory…couldn’t believe it…an instant classic right there.” Rick Frystak, Amoeba Records

“Inside is a collection of songs that come from Spencer’s love of the blues. It’s an intimate journey but one that will connect profoundly and repeatedly with listeners.” Clive Rawlings, Blues Matters

“An album I am sure will satisfy all good music lovers, from those who loved the original Fleetwood Mac, to the younger ones, who enjoy Pop Music, Blues, Rock, Classical Music, Soul… So, if you like good music, this album is perfect for you.” Vincent Zumel, La Hora del Blues

” ‘Bend In The Road’ flows with the ease of a master craftsman at the top of his game. His obvious skill and passion for what he does makes this disc impossible for me to remove from the player. It has simply mesmerized me.” Monte Adkinson, Suncoast Blues Society

‘Precious Little’ left Blues aficionados eager for more… and now, six years later, Jeremy Spencer has put together a masterpiece with his new release, ‘Bend in the Road’.

Acclaimed Guitarist JOHN MCLAUGHLIN Announces Release Of “Now Here This” Set For October 18TH Release On Abstract Logix

Posted in Guitar, guitarists, jazz, jazz fusion, Music, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , , , on July 24, 2012 by Metal Odyssey

(Los Angeles, CA) – It has been nearly two years since world-renowned guitarist John McLaughlin released To the One, his highly acclaimed, first studio recording, with The 4th Dimension. The veteran guitar aficionado celebrates his 70th birthday year with the announcement of Now Here This (Abstract Logix) set for release on October 18th as he ups-the-ante even further with greater fire, finesse and freewheeling interplay.

McLaughlin’s musical influences carry over to many of the musical elite also declaring him to be “the best guitarist alive,” as Jeff Beck mused in 2010. In 2003, McLaughlin was ranked 49th in Rolling Stone magazine list of the “100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time” and in the summer of 2007, McLaughlin performed at Eric Clapton’s Crossroad Guitar Festival in Bridgeview, Illinois.

Chick Corea remarked to DownBeat Magazine that “…what John McLaughlin did with the electric guitar set the world on its ear.  No one ever heard an electric guitar played like that before, and it certainly inspired me. John’s band, more than my experience with Miles, led me to want to turn the volume up and write music that was more dramatic and made your hair stand on end.”

McLaughlin’s latest creative venture with The 4th Dimension reflects a slight, yet significant, alteration of the dynamic, specifically the recruitment of powerhouse Indian drummer Ranjit Barot.  Cameroon-born/Paris-resident bassist Etienne M’Bappe is back from To the One, as is keyboardist/drummer Gary Husband. This 8-track set of McLaughlin originals, recorded at Studio 26 in Antibes, France, testifies to the guitarist’s decades-long fascination with Indian music, through his effortless virtuosity, and relentless lyricism, even when the guitarist is shredding at near-light speed.   As John himself simply states, “Now Here This is the culmination of my life’s work till now.”

The critical praise for McLaughlin’s previous musical venture cascaded forth immediately; John Fordham of The Guardian declared, “…this tight 40-minute document hums with a collaborative energy.”  There is little doubt that McLaughlin’s return to the electrified fusion he first innovated more than 40 years ago in groups led by trumpet icon Miles Davis and drum legend Tony Williams – and, of course, with his own earth-shattering Mahavishnu Orchestra – is as electrifying and exhilarating as ever. And for those new to the genre, Now Here This is the perfect introduction – one that will surely encourage them to also dive, head-first, into this legendary guitarist’s lengthy and groundbreaking discography.

Prolific Progressive Rock Icon NEAL MORSE Moves Forward With a Blistering and Melodic New Release: “Momentum”

Posted in Guitar, guitarists, Hard Rock, Music, progressive rock, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , , on July 17, 2012 by Metal Odyssey

Nashville, TN—Coming off of a highly successful 2011 marked by the release of the critically acclaimed “Testimony 2” and an enthusiastically attended tour throughout the U.S., Mexico and Europe, Neal Morse could easily have justified going on a creative hiatus to catch his breath. But that would fly in the face of his convictions and the sense that he is being led to build upon the swell of success he is experiencing.

In January 2012, Morse was pondering the possibilities of a change in direction. After all, it had been a decade since he left the Progressive Rock stalwart Spock’s Beard to pursue a solo career that would allow him to write more freely about his personal faith. And in that time he had recorded 6 impressive studio records that were heralded for their unique hybrid of epic compositions that tested the boundaries of musicianship while maintaining a remarkable sense of melody through irresistible hooks and addictive choruses. He could have taken a break. Or gone in an entirely new direction. But he felt led otherwise, as summed up in the new record’s title track: “You’ve got some new momentum, you better keep going.”

Morse’s long time studio partner and friend Mike Portnoy had a small window in January 2012 when he could record. The only problem was, there was only one song and a few bits and pieces written. Taking a leap of faith, he scheduled a recording session with the drumming legend and longtime bass player Randy George in two weeks, hoping that the music would arrive before the musicians. And boy did it ever.

_____________________________

“Momentum” features five exceptional stand alone songs and one longer conceptual piece. In addition to the accessible title track, there’s the quirkily clever, Gentle Giant-inspired “Thoughts Part 5,” which follows in the footsteps of the previous “Thoughts” tracks penned by Morse with Spocks Beard. “Smoke and Mirrors” trods an introspective, acoustic path, while “Weathering Sky” offers a raucous cry for deliverance and renewal from a searching soul. Rounding out the shorter tracks is “Freak,” an upbeat, strings-charged song unlike anything Neal has recorded to date. Last comes “World Without End,” a near 34-minute, six-part epic that contains everything that defines Morse as a master of the genre.

Another highlight of this record is that, in addition to a masterful solo by guitar wizard Paul Gilbert, there are contributions from Adson Sodré, Bill Hubauer and Eric Gillette; three musicians who were selected as members of Morse’s new touring band through an exciting YouTube driven open audition process.

While “Momentum” propels Morse forward and further cements his standing as a prolific Progressive Rock icon, it steers clear of the potential “more of the same” trap, and features fresh musical angles and some of the finest performances to date by the Morse, Portnoy, George team.

The release of “Momentum” on September 11 will be quickly followed up by a North American tour that spotlights the fresh talent of his new live band, with stops in such cities as Nashville, Jacksonville, New York, Chicago, Denver, Los Angeles, Seattle and Mexico City.

Much to the delight of progressive Rock Fans around the globe, Neal Morse is moving ahead with “Momentum” and there doesn’t appear to be any kind of end to his unique creative talent in sight.

JOE WALSH “Analog Man” – Some Fun & Random Thoughts From Stone (Part Five)

Rock ‘N Roll Photography Of Analog Man

JOE WALSH – Okay, as I’ve been thoroughly enjoying Joe Walsh’s new studio album Analog Man, something very, very funny finally dawned on me! This album cover idea for Analog Man has been done before! Just because an album cover idea has been done before, it doesn’t necessarily mean it was done better. No way. Not in this case.

I give the Rockin’ nod to this Analog Man cover; both for its photographic excellence and for the way the photographer (Andrew Macpherson) captured the mood of Joe Walsh. It’s all about capturing that Rock mystique in Rock photography and Andrew did just that. Commendable!

Now… for that other album cover (from the past) with the same idea… uh, oh…

At one time, Torben Enevoldsen was photographed this same way for his album: Heavy Persuasion. Torben must have asked his neighbor to stop mowing the lawn to take this picture of him. Big difference between the Analog Man album cover and Heavy Persuasion. Whoa. Check it out for yourself below:

Thanks for visiting and reading Part Five of my fun & random thoughts on Analog Man. If you’ve missed out on Parts One thru Four, don’t panic! Just click on the four links below to read ’em! Metal be thy name.

JOE WALSH “Analog Man” – Some Fun & Random Thoughts From Stone (Part One)

Posted in classic rock, classic rock albums, Guitar, guitarists, Hard Rock, Music, rock and roll, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , , , , , on June 8, 2012 by Metal Odyssey

JOE WALSH – Yesterday I bought the new Joe Walsh CD, Analog Man (the CD/DVD Limited Deluxe Edition) and I’m quite chipper about it. This is the first solo album from Joe Walsh in two decades; I have found both the music and lyrics to be incredibly inspiring. I find it remarkably amazing, how one new album such as Analog Man can trigger so many thoughts about music and life! I’ve always felt that music can connect the dots and profoundly act as a universal language within our fast-paced world.

The Rock ‘N Roll thoughts have been pouring from my brain, since my picking up Analog Man and delving into its music, lyrics and bountiful liner notes. Therefore, I will be writing about my thoughts on Analog Man, from the lyrical content to my memories of hearing Joe Walsh on the radio as an innocent young lad in the seventies. My writings will be posted in parts, all being inspired from Analog Man.

This is a Joe Walsh – Analog Man custom sport metallic watch! Whoa. Do I own one? Nope.

Here Is Part One:

I’ve always been lured by the vocals, musicianship and songwriting of Joe Walsh. What’s “always” Stone? Well, it all started a long time ago, in a childhood far, far, away. I used to hear the song Walk Away from James Gang being played on the radio back in the 70’s and fell in love with it quite easily. I couldn’t get the lyrics or guitar out of my head! Did I actually know who Joe Walsh was back then? Of course I didn’t.

Onto the Eagles. I would hear Hotel California, Life In The Fast Lane and New Kid In Town on none other than… the radio. Onto the solo career of Joe Walsh and the radio airwaves consistently played Life’s Been Good. I was in 7th grade during 1978 and thought this song was damn good! All these songs I’ve mentioned remind me of going camping with my family back in those late 70’s. (Whoa). It’s due to the widespread campers playing their radios really loud all the time… it would be “battle of the Woolworth’s, Montgomery Ward (or Sears) cheap radios”. This was before the big (and expensive) “boom boxes” became popular.

Joe Walsh – But Seriously, Folks… (1978 – Asylum)

During 1976, 1977 and 1978, I still had no clue that Joe Walsh was a key figure involved in these (eventual) iconic songs. However, that all changed in 1979. Read on for more excitement…

When the Eagles released The Long Run, I was psyched-out by Heartache Tonight. Every kid in my class was psyched-out by this song back then. 1979 was a huge year for me; kissing a girl (or two) for the first time, getting chicken pox, missing my eighth grade graduation from Parochial school due to the chicken pox, going to the Dom Perno’s University Of Connecticut Summer Basketball Camp and receiving The Long Run (on vinyl) as a christmas present from my parents. Phew.

Uh… before I actually received The Long Run as a Christmas gift, well, um… I honestly thought Heartache Tonight was titled and sung as: Party Tonight. Red Forman, the father character from That 70’s Show would have said to me: “Stone, you’re a dumb ass.” As messed up as it sounds, my school friends and I would sing at the top of our lungs, during recess: “There’s gonna be a party tonight! A party tonight I know!” Back in ’79, we were all a bunch of dumb asses in that Parochial school playground.

I remember the album jacket  for The Long Run was a gatefold. I would stare at each member of The Eagles, as each song from this album played on my turntable. It got to the point where I actually thought each band member was staring back at me. (Whoa). My favorite song from The Long Run then and now? In The City. Guess what? After holding and staring at that gatefold album jacket of The Long Run and listening to In The City about 999 times on my $25 turntable and before the New Year of 1980 was ushered in, I finally knew who Joe Walsh really was. Metal be thy name!

In The City appears on The Original Motion Picture Soundtrack for the 1979 film: The Warriors. I remember (finally) seeing this movie on HBO during the early 80’s. It’s a (violent) cult classic. I’ve never owned this soundtrack; I probably will buy it eventually, one day.

My Joe Walsh – Analog Man thoughts will continue… stay tuned!
