I think it’s been quite awhile since I wrote down Some Metal and Rock ‘N Roll Thoughts on Metal Odyssey. I write plenty of them down on twitter, of course! The last time this column (theme) was posted, I believe was November 4th, 2012. Whoa! Since then my family and I have relocated to Ohio via Pennsylvania and I’ve been busier than a taxi on Broadway during Christmas; when it comes to starting over in a new state.
Within the last year or so, my love for Metal has grown ever stronger. It’s probably cause I’ve leaned on so many bands and musicians to fill my senses with their sounds, energy and vocals; just to get me through the CRAZINESS of relocating. Exhilarating. That’s what METAL is for me. I’m sure y’all know what I’m talking about too, when I equate the word exhilarating to Metal.
I’m really, really, really, really, really excited and cannot wait for the new album Axe To Grind to be released from this True Metal band, with origins from Denmark and featuring Kev Moore on vocals:
The album artwork on numerous 2013 releases that I’ve been seeing and enjoying lately is phenomenal! Suffocation’s Pinnacle Of Bedlam, Six Feet Under’s Unborn, Adrenaline Mob’s Coverta and Helloween’s Straight Out Of Hell are just a few that have my eyes popping with Metal glee! Mar. 25, 2013, Philadelphia – Kylesa premiere Quicksand, a new song from their forthcoming album Ultraviolet (May 28, Season of Mist), via Spin (http://www.spin.com/articles/kylesa-quicksand-ultraviolet-stream).
“Quicksand is a quick 2:35 of ghostly dreamdoom that joins the melodies of ’90s shoegaze with the churn of modern sludge and a riff straight from the Billy Corgan playbook,” says Spin in a brief write-up accompanying the song stream, adding that the song is “a muscular swirl that should please anyone who thought m b v didn’t have enough shouting.”
The band has also unveiled the cover art for Ultraviolet, which was done by Sean Beaudry. Beaudry, a fellow Savannah resident, did the artwork for the band’s Time Will Fuse Its Worth reissue. Kylesa will play a free, all ages show in their hometown of Savannah at The Dollhouse on Apr. 19 as a way to thank fans for their ongoing support.
Pitchfork, in the band’s first interview regarding Ultraviolet (http://pitchfork.com/features/show-no-mercy/9084-kylesa/), said of the album: “It’s the… heavy rock band’s darkest, most atmospheric record to date. The collection, which features an array of subtle electronic elements, makes for an expressive, immersive listen that will likely find the double-drumming quintet a larger audience.”

Todd Grubbs, who studied at Berklee College of Music, has been voted ‘Most Outstanding Guitarist’ at the Tampa Bay Music Awards, as well as winning the ‘Most Outstanding Video’ two consecutive years in a row. His guitar prowess has been touted by critics and fans worldwide, and can be witnessed on all his solo albums. Todd has surrounded himself with an array of legendary music artists and musicians which is the inspiration behind the album ‘Best of The Guests’.
‘Best of the Guests’ features Derek Sherinian (Dream Theater, Black Country Communion), Bryan Beller (Steve Vai, Joe Satriani, The Aristocrats), Mike Keneally (Zappa, Solo), Sean Malone (Cynic), Blues Saraceno (Poison, Transmission OK), Chris Poland (Megadeth, Ohm), Don Preston (Zappa), John Wesley (Porcupine Tree), Jerry Outlaw (Bogus Pomp), Pattrick Bettison (Acoustic Alchemy), Mark Prator (Iced Earth), and Ralph Santola (Obituary).
Says Todd, “I have had quite a few amazing players make guest appearances on my albums over the years, so I decided it would be cool to put them all together on one release. I have always been honored that these great musicians would agree to perform on my compositions and their contributions have been stellar across the board. The CD includes one new track I recorded featuring Byran Beller on bass.”
Along with Frank Zappa, Grubbs influences, which can be heard throughout both his new releases, range from Steve Vai, John Coltrane, The Beatles, Kate Bush, Jeff Beck, Michael Schenker, Ulli Jon Roth and Adrian Belew.

The second release is ‘Toddities volume 2’, a collection of esoteric recording by Todd Grubbs. Todd explains, “The CD includes some of my more ‘out there’ recordings that did not fit on other releases. It is really cool how these orphaned songs come together and form their own continuity as if it was a planned out project.”
Currently, Todd is working on a couple of albums worth of vocal tunes with a lot of great singers. Says Todd, “I plan to release at least one of these in 2014. Beyond this I am producing writing and recording with a number of young artists and bands covering a wide variety of styles.”
In closing Todd imparts to his fans and listeners, “I would like to thank everyone who has enjoyed my music over the years, I really love making music and to have people out there that support what I do is amazing esp… with the current music industry situation being in a state of flux so to speak. I have always created my music on my own terms and I am very proud of my work to this point.”

Richmond, VA – Much to the excitement of Hard Rock fans around the globe, Firehouse legend Bill Leverty has released a fantastic new CD of classic rock covers – guaranteed to thrill even the hardest of rockers! Hailing from Richmond, VA, Bill Leverty and Firehouse first gained recognition in 1991 when they won the ‘Favorite Heavy Metal/Hard Rock New Artist’ from the American Music Awards. Signed to Epic Records, Firehouse would go on to release several hit songs throughout the ’90s such as “Don’t Treat Me Bad”, “Love Of A Lifetime”, “All She Wrote” and “Reach The Sky”, to name a few. The band sold over 2 million copies of their debut album ‘Firehouse’, and sold close to a million copies of their second album ‘Hold Your Fire’ in the US alone.

For their 3rd release the band secured the production chores of famed producer Ron Nevison (Led Zeppelin, Ozzy Osbourne, Damn Yankees, UFO, etc). ‘Firehouse 3’ went on to be another big seller, especially in Asia. Their next release ‘Good Acoustics’, the first of several albums produced by Bill Leverty, won them a Gold record in several countries. Firehouse would go on to release 5 more well-received critically acclaimed albums as well as successful world tours throughout the 2000’s. In a recent interview with Jeb Wright of Classic Rock Revisited, Bill explains the exciting rock guitar sound he has created on the album’s recordings, “It all starts with my C.R. Alsip guitar. C.R. Alsip guitars are made right outside of Wichita, KS. Mine is a neck-through-body guitar. It’s hard rock maple with mahogany sides. This wood combination, along with some other very unique design elements, makes the guitar very solid and it has a very favorable tone. I used the bridge pickups, which are Billy Gibbon’s Pearly Gates pickups by Seymour Duncan, on this one. I plugged the guitar straight into my Splawn Quick Rod 100 for a stereo pair of rhythm tracks and into my Fractal Audio Axe FX II for another stereo pair.”
In closing Bill has this to impart to his fans and listeners, “I really want to thank all the people who have supported my career and made it possible for me to be able to work full-time in the music business for over 25 years. It’s been a great ride so far. I’m going to do everything in my power to keep this train rolling for another 50 years. Hope to see you down the road!!”

Rock legend George Lynch (Dokken, Lynch Mob) and Emmy-nominated documentary filmmaker Mark Mclaughlin are currently working together on Shadowtrain: Under a Crooked Sky, a stirring documentary that explores a hybrid way of life merging modern society with the ancient practices of people who have lived in harmony with the land for thousands of years; native American Indians.
The film follows Lynch and drummer/activist/artist Vincent Nicastro as they visit different reservations around the American Southwest with a trailer full of gear and group of musicians to get a firsthand look at effects of modern consumerism on our native population and the steps they’re taking towards sustainability.
While the documentary is nearly complete, the filmmakers are now seeking help in seeing their collective vision come to fruition. The journey begins as renowned guitarist George Lynch (Dokken, Lynch Mob), drummer, artist and activist Vinnie Nicastro and a musical band of politically engaged musicians climb into an old station wagon in the southwest desert. They pull a vintage horse trailer, retro-fitted to carry band equipment, solar panels, generators and camping gear.
They travel the back roads, searching for a truth that can speak to power. They visit the Apache, Navajo and Hopi reservations in Arizona, Zuni and Tewa in New Mexico, Shoshone in Nevada, Utes in Utah and Colorado and then on to the Dakotas to visit the people and places that were (and still are) the epicenter of conflict between the native peoples and their European conquerors.
The people they visit on the reservations will share how they have created sensible environmentally sustainable solutions that work in today’s world. Simple and proven practices like passive solar water heaters on the Paiute reservation, active community gardens and other ideas will be explored. Then as Shadowtrain moves on to other reservations, they will help to integrate these workable procedures, pick up more ideas and carry them further.

On Record Store Day, April 20, Soundgarden will be releasing a limited edition vinyl of the King Animal demos worldwide. This is the first time these recordings have been available together.
The songs will be pressed on 10″ PINK vinyl and the 6-song package will also include a free digital download card.
The demos were recorded by Chris Cornell & Soundgarden at TNC Studios in Los Angeles, CA and Deke River Studio in Seattle, WA.

SLAUGHTER REVOLUTION – STONE’S METAL PICK OF THE DAY!

SLAUGHTER REVOLUTION – This fourth studio album from Slaughter, Revolution, may not bestow that same 90’s Arena-style Heavy Rock which skyrocketed this band up the charts; still this is a Slaughter album that deserves to be revisited for its Psychedelic backdrop meets late 90’s Hard Rock. Truthfully, the album cover is much more Psychedelic than the songs! Back when Post-Grunge was heating up the airwaves and Heavy Metal was not getting anymore love from the media, for me, Slaughter honestly released a very memorable album with Revolution back in 1997.
The vocals of Mark Slaughter are toned down here and there on Revolution, yet Tongue n’ Groove is a song that Mark Slaughter nails with excitement! Believe me, Mark Slaughter has his classic moments, vocally, on this album. There’s something about the ambiance of it all, some special Slaughter potion was added here that makes this album still Rock like crazy for me. The album opener American Pie makes me feel like it’s 1970; only in a good way. This American Pie song has all the retro/Psychedelic flavor one could ask for and it seriously sucks me right in.

The (legendary) Joe Walsh gem from 1973, Rocky Mountain Way, is covered here by Slaughter and it sounds exceptionally groovy. Metal as my witness, Slaughter made this song their own… still, the original can never be topped. From beginning to end, Revolution is worthy of listening to in its entirety. I truly don’t want to skip a song on Revolution, each time I listen to it. A sad fact about Revolution is it’s the last time guitarist Tim Kelly would shine on a Slaughter studio album. Tim Kelly had passed away in an automobile accident the following year of 1998.
I’ve seen Revolution for sale on Amazon.com as an import CD, along with the MP3 album. If you’re looking to get your ears into a 90’s Hard Rock album without all the bells and whistles featuring the flavor-of-the-month from that era, then Revolution from Slaughter just might do the Rockin’ trick. By the way, my media version of Revolution is on cassette and it sounds grand while I’m driving my 2000 Ford Taurus. Metal be thy name.

Stone Says: 7 Days Dead are a Metal band worth every second of checking out! This band delivers groove laced Metal that will appeal to both Hard Rock and Metal fans alike. Beyond Within showcases guitar driven songs with an overall modern and melodic sound that crunches! Eye popping riffs abound! Lead vocalist Ryan McManus does have a striking resemblance to James Hetfield (vocally) and I’m digging it.
Just a terrific new band that I look forward to hearing a whole lot more of in the Metal future! 7 Days Dead have nailed it with their debut EP Beyond Within. Metal be thy name.
