Candlelight Records today confirms the worldwide signing of PESTILENCE. The celebrated eastern Netherlands-based band is currently preparing to enter the studio to begin work on their seventh studio album, titled Obsideo. The album is expected to be produced by vocalist/guitarist Patrick Mameli and set to feature ten new songs. No release date is set as of press time.
The band comments, “PESTILENCE is very excited to announce that they have signed a recording deal with Candlelight Records. We feel that our new material is very special and innovative and that it needs the back up of a solid company like Candlelight to get it out there to the Metal world.”
Obsideo will feature band mastermind Mameli and long-time partner guitarist Patrick Uterwijk with new German bassist George Maier and Australian drummer Dave Haley. Mameli notes, “PESTILENCE is chuffed to have Dave Haley in the lineup. Dave is one of the five best extreme drummers in the world, and his talent brings PESTILENCE to new levels that couldn’t be reached otherwise. Georg Maier is a young and talented bass player that will turn some heads. Both guys are really down to earth and real easy-going. Of course, Patrick Uterwijk is my most respectable and long-going friend and musician.”

Formed in 1986, PESTILENCE took influence from early American and German Thrash Metal to cultivate it’s now signature Death Metal sound. Four albums would see release and continued worldwide growth for the band before members decided to go separate ways in 1994. Fourteen years later, the band would reform and in 2009 released Resurrection Macabre (Mascot). On review, noted website Chronicles Of Chaos said, “Mameli and company chose to steer this effort down paths previously unexplored whilst maintaining their unmistakably vintage essence.” Blabbermouth added, “distinctive and unique… a diverse and satisfying metal experience.”
In recent years, PESTILENCE has also returned to the live stage; their first North American tour in over 16 years commenced at the annual Maryland Death Fest May 30, 2010. Commenting to Noisecreep after announcement of the 18-city tour, Mameli said, “we will put our heart and soul into these upcoming shows and hope to make lots of fans happy with both old and new material.” PESTILENCE was a featured performer on the second annual 70,000 Tons of Metal Cruise that left Miami on January 23, 2012. The band performed two sets on the popular Caribbean cruise that also featured Cannibal Corpse, Crowbar, My Dying Bride, Samael, Overkill, and Venom among others.

As I have expressed on both Metal Odyssey and twitter during the past month of January, my family and I have relocated to Ohio. Ohio ROCKS. I’m not just saying that cause I’ve been living here in a hotel for about 8 days now; in fact, every person I’ve met in this grand state thus far is downright friendly. Stone digs that. Meeting new people and experiencing new places is what life is all about. Metal be thy name and ring that relocation bell!
Within these next 24 hours, our official status of becoming residents of Ohio will be solidified; as we move into our new home. With a new home comes (the possibility of) no immediate internet access; resulting in a temporary burp in Metal coverage you are used to reading and seeing on Metal Odyssey. Have no fear, I have purposely scheduled some (very cool) posts that will run through the third week of February (just in case the internet is not installed/delivered to our residence in a timely fashion). I truly hope you dig what I’ve got in store for you with these Rockin’ posts too!

By now you must be asking: Stone, why is that album cover for Motörhead The Wörld Is Ours – Vol 2: Anyplace Crazy, As Anywhere Else at the top of this post? I answer: this CD is one of the first I’ve purchased while living here in Ohio. I found this Motörhead CD at Best Buy. Plus, I couldn’t resist tying in the title of this double live Motörhead album with this post. Anyplace Crazy, As Anywhere Else… that’s what relocation is all about. Nuff’ said.
There are so many little and big things to accomplish when you relocate! My Metal head is spinning! No, I’m not kidding! Okay, after that crybaby outburst, I want to thank each and every visitor (both casual and loyal) to Metal Odyssey for understanding there may be a lapse in normal action in the coming days. Hopefully the internet arrives to our new home quickly and I can breathe a sigh of relief! In the meantime… keep on Rockin’ with no sign of stoppin’!

Long Island-based Heavy Metal powerhouse MAELSTROM has issued an update regarding the enormous reception received by the Halloween 2012 digital reissue of their critically acclaimed EP, It Was Predestined. Widely-praised by critics across the globe in 2009, when the EP was originally self-released, and again last year when Itchy Metal Entertainment (IME) offered the release to Metal fans worldwide, It Was Predestined exploded onto the CMJ Loud Rock charts this month. MAELSTROM vocalist Gary Vosganian had this to say about the accomplishment:

San Francisco – Pasadena Napalm Division, the Houston-based Thrash Metal outfit that features D.R.I. singer Kurt Brecht and members of Dead Horse, will release their self-titled debut on April 9th via Minus Head Records.
“Fans of D.R.I. and Deadhorse will rejoice. PND is what Thrash Metal should sound like in 2013,” said Brecht. “Working together with some of the members of Texas-based cult band, Deadhorse, we have come up with some hard-hitting tunes that span genres and will withstand the test of time. Friday, May 31st 2013 sees Witch Cross taking to the stage in their hometown of Hillerød, in North Sjaelland, Denmark. The gig will be their first of the year and will follow hot on the heels of a new album, mixed by metal legend Chris Tsangarides, set for release a month earlier – their first since their debut ‘Fit for Fight’ some 26 years ago! More shows throughout the year are promised as the band look to take their classic tracks on the road alongside new material from the upcoming album.

Candlelight Records today confirms May 7th as the North American release date for False Prism, the debut full-length from SADGIQACEA. Produced by Chris Grigg (Woe), the album’s four mammoth songs will pummel listeners for close to 40-minutes. The album follows their 2011 EP, Submerged in Manichea (Horror Pain Gore Death Productions) and two regarded split recordings with Ominous Black and Grass (Anthropic).
Heavy Planet says, “While destroying everything in their path, Philadelphia-based SADGIQACEA creates an inspiring assault of devastation. Crushing riffs and ambient beauty swirl as the vocals bark… epic and full-on sludge.” Fueled by the duo of Evan Schaefer (vocals/guitar) and Fred Grabosky (vocals/drums), the band has already proven themselves road savvy. Plans are already in order to return to the road for the album’s springtime release. “We are honored to be working with Candlelight Records and ready to spread our music to masses with their support,” says the band. “We are currently planning our second full American tour with our Philadelphia brothers Hivelords for Summer 2013.”
Formed in 2010, SADGIQACEA (pronounced sad-juh-kay-sha) forge a diverse sonic palette that has been likened at times to Neurosis, Intronaut, Weakling, and Kylesa. HOMETOWN SHOW ON FEB. 23 AT BEAT KITCHEN
Chicago – Beak, the Chicago-based Post-Metal quartet who made a splash with their 2012 EP release Eyrie, are currently in the studio working on their debut full-length.
“The forthcoming record is a contemplation on beginnings and the struggle for life,” explained vocalist Jon Slusher. “As a follow-up to Eyrie, if in record time was the end of all things, then the new album deals with creation after the destruction, the cycle of life.” The band has reunited with engineer Neil Strauch (Iron and Wine, Bonnie Prince Billy) and are recording at Steve Albini’s Electrical Audio. The album is due this fall.

Eyrie was an unexpected surprise from a relatively unknown band with review after review noting what a surprising and worthwhile find the five-track release was. Spin said “Chicago post-metal party crashers have songwriting acumen and hardcore bent that… Neur-Isis copycats sorely lack,” Heavy Metal About.com added “I have no doubt that Beak will become a force to be reckoned with” and Stereokiller offered “Eyrie is more than a pleasant surprise. It’s one of the better EPs I’ve heard in sometime. It being an EP is really the only somewhat negative thing I can say. I want more, 5 tracks isn’t enough.”
The band play a hometown show on Feb. 23 at Beat Kitchen where they will perform songs from Eyrie as well as a preview of what’s to come on the new album.

Bell Witch is a minimalist doom duo from Seattle comprised of drummer Adrian Guerra and bassist Dylan Desmond (of Samothrace fame). Uniquely sorrowful, Bell Witch is as much akin to Skepticism as they are to Codeine. Longing is an hour and 10 minutes of doomed desolation, sadness, and sorrow. Originally released on CD and digital formats by Profound Lore Records, Longing was one of the most important doom albums of 2012 featured on numerous year end lists.
Longing will be released as a gatefold double album with thick, old-style case wrapped jackets and comes with a gatefold insert. Comes on both black vinyl and limited red vinyl. Red vinyl is limited to 300 copies. This should ship in March but delays are always possible.

KISS – Smashes, Thrashes & Hits was released back in the glorious Heavy Metal year of 1988. This greatest hits collection contains 15 KISS hits, with 2 songs that were previously unreleased: Let’s Put The X In Sex and (You Make Me) Rock Hard. There are at least a dozen or so greatest hits albums from KISS and that number may very well be conservative. This compilation is worth owning though, especially if you’re a KISSaholic.
My name is Stone… and I’m a KISSaholic.
Some may feel that Let’s Put The X In Sex is a cheesy KISS song, however, I find myself singing along to it each and every time It plays! I don’t give a stinking shit, this KISS song is simply (gulp) FUN! As it’s been declared by many great warriors of Metal: “If it’s too loud, you’re too old” and “If it’s too fun and wild, you’re most likely severely constipated.”
Beth is sung by (the late and legendary) Eric Carr. Eric obviously sang his heart out on Beth and I dig that. With that said, Beth will always be a Peter Criss song, in my Metal heart. Peter Criss is a living KISS legend, by the way. I had to throw that in.
There are many timeless KISS classics heard on Smashes, Thrashes & Hits; with Love Gun, Detroit Rock City, Strutter, Calling Dr. Love, Rock And Roll All Nite, Deuce, Shout It Out Loud and I Love It Loud being my favorites off this CD. Okay, Let’s Put The X In Sex is a favorite of mine too… I’m not bashful about saying this song, when played LOUD, gives me ostrich bumps all over my semi-good looking face. Metal be thy name.
My name is Stone… and I feel The Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame is a joke without KISS having enshrinement there. Those who have kept KISS out of this hall can KISS my Metal lovin’ ass. Whoa.
Lick It Up, Heaven’s On Fire, Tears Are Falling and I Was Made For Lovin’ You round out the 15 KISS classics you’ll hear on this CD. These are the KISS songs that I consider as being on the “second-tier” of KISS quality. Don’t get me wrong, I enjoy these KISS songs too; only they’re not as legendary to my ears and Metal soul.
* One confusing item of note: is it Night or Nite? I’ve always known and seen the spelling of this iconic KISS song as: Rock And Roll All Nite. On this CD’s track listing, this song is spelled as: Rock And Roll All Night. Whoa.
