KIX CELEBRATES 35-YEAR ANNIVERSARY OF THE 1985 ALBUM, MIDNITE DYNAMITE, WITH THE RELEASE OF MIDNITE DYNAMITE RE-LIT

RE-MIXED & RE-MASTERED VERSION OF MIDNITE DYNAMITE

OUT NOVEMBER 20, 2020

NEW YORK, NY (November – 2020) In a year full of bad news, KIX is excited to bring some good news to their fans. On the 35th anniversary of the release of Midnite Dynamite, Maryland hard rock icons, KIX will release Midnite Dynamite Re-Lit (track listing below), on November 20, 2020. For Midnite Dynamite Re-Lit, KIX partnered with long-time collaborator and the album’s original producer, Beau Hill (Alice Cooper, Ratt, Warrant, KIX), for a blistering update of the fan-favorite album. Midnite Dynamite Re-Lit is available for pre-order now on the band’s webstore where fans can also purchase special commemorative merchandise including T-shirts, hoodies, keychains, and more.

KIX’s third album of their career, originally released October 7, 1985, Midnite Dynamite reflected the band’s true essence, as the popular musical landscape of the mid 80’s had shifted in their favor. From the slash-and-burn riffing of the album’s title track and the high-speed antics of “Layin’ Rubber,” to the Aerosmith flavored groove of numbers like “Cold Shower” and “Sex,” to the heart-break melancholia of the album’s sole ballad, “Walkin’ Away,” Midnite Dynamite is packed with material that delivers not only attitude in spades, but also pummels the listener with hook after hook.

Thirty-five years after its initial release, Midnite Dynamite remains a fan and band favorite, and Hill (who also remixed KIX’s hit album Blow My Fuse to mark its 30th anniversary in 2018) relished the opportunity to return to the original 1985 multi-track tapes.

About the new mix, Hill says, “The guitars don’t have as much schmutz on them as the original, and Steve’s vocal just jumps off the page now without all the bulls**t that I was putting on it then. I guess that’s what happens when you mix and produce for an additional 35 years.”

“Back in the 80s, everything had way too much echo, way too much reverb,” recalls vocalist Steve Whiteman. “It was so muddy that sometimes you would lose some really dynamic performances. Beau cleaned all that up on the Blow My Fuse re-release, and he’s doing the same thing on Midnite Dynamite, so it sounds incredible.”

Midnite Dynamite Re-Lit also includes original demo recordings for seven out of the ten songs, plus one early album mix of the song, “Walking Away.”  “We chose to include a demo disc, like Fuse 30 Reblown, even though we were missing two songs,” says bassist Mark Schenker. “Nobody had a copy on either cassette or two track stereo quarter-inch tape. I searched high and low and couldn’t find the demos of ‘Scarlet Fever,’ or ‘Bang Bang.’”

In 2014, KIX released their seventh full-length album, Rock Your Face Off (Loud & Proud Records) their first studio effort since 1995’s Show Business. The album debuted at #1 on Amazon’s “Hard Rock and Metal “chart, in the Top 50 on Billboard’s “Top 200 Albums” chart, #5 on the “Independent Albums “chart, #11 on the “Top Internet “chart, #17 on the “Top Rock Albums” chart, #27 on the “Indie/Small Chain Core Stores” chart and #33 on the “Physical” chart.

KIX last released Can’t Stop The Show: The Return Of KIX on October 21, 2016, a two-disc DVD/CD set that entered the Billboard Top Music Video Sales chart at #3, and rose to the #1 position, the band’s highest charting debut and first #1 ever in their 35-year history.  The 71-minute film offered an in-depth look into KIX’s decision to record their first new album, 2014’s Rock Your Face Off, in almost 20 years.

In 2018, KIX celebrated the 30th Anniversary of their biggest album, Blow My Fuse, with Blow My Fuse Re-Blown, a two-disc set with a remixed/remastered version of the album, along with the original demo recordings for all 10 songs. The reunion with Beau Hill for this remix sparked the initiative to revisit Midnite Dynamite and take a similar approach to updating KIX’s legacy.

KIX will hit the road in 2021 playing select deep cuts from the album Midnite Dynamite to celebrate the release of Midnite Dynamite Re-Lit. All tour dates can be found on the band’s website.

EYEHATEGOD – RETURN TO CENTURY MEDIA RECORDS

Posted in Hard Rock, Heavy Metal, Music, music news, news, rock music, world news with tags , , , , , on November 17, 2020 by Metal Odyssey

Nov. 17, 2020, NEW ORLEANS – EyeHateGod, “the quintessential Southern sludge band” (Pitchfork) that Rolling Stone dubbed one of “America’s great live bands,” have returned to Century Media Records, with an eye towards a Spring 2021 release for the band’s first album in seven years: A History of Nomadic Behavior (date TBA).

A joint statement from the band on the band and label reunion: “EyeHateGod are pleased to announce we’ve signed a licensing deal with Century Media Records USA and Europe…! We welcome the new changes along with the new year coming, and want this union to benefit everyone involved, especially our rabid and disturbed fans across the globe!”

“We’re happy to announce solidifying our worldwide relationship with EyeHateGod,” added Director of Century Media Records, Phillipp Schulte. “While Century Media has worked with the guys in the past, we’re excited to begin a new chapter with a record that easily ranks amongst this hard-working, heavy-touring band’s best. We are very much looking forward to releasing EyeHateGod’s A Historic of Nomadic Behavior.”

“EyeHateGod are survivors on every level,” says Century Media Records Vice President of A&R, Mike Gitter. “Since 1988 they’ve been part of the framework of extreme music and A History of Nomadic Behavior will be no exception. Theirs is a tough and turbulent road that would have stopped most bands dead in their tracks. Not these NOLA legends. Century Media has been part of their career from the early days and we’re excited to be working together again. EyeHateGod is here to stay.”

The cover art for A History of Nomadic Behavior has been revealed as the band and label prepare to share additional details about the album in coming weeks.

About EyeHateGod:

New Orleans’ EyeHateGod is the snarling, bilious sound of dead-end America. Since 1988, they’ve been a soundtrack for the troubled masses. Ugly music for ugly times. That’s the sense of disenchantment and disease that lies at the heart of their latest and sixth full-length album, A History of Nomadic Behavior. Anyone familiar with EHG’s story knows this is survivor’s music, a sound unto itself where Sabbathian riffs are meted out with a caustic anger that goes beyond punk. That’s been the blueprint since guitarist Jimmy Bower (also of NOLA supergroup, Down) founded the band in 1988 with vocalist Michael IX Williams joining not long after. With a discography including sludge-punk mainstays like In the Name of Suffering (1990), Take as Needed for Pain (1993) Dopesick (1996), Confederacy of Ruined Lives (2000) or 2014’s eponymously-titled LP, released in the US through Housecore Records, EHG laid the cracked foundation for their infamous and influential sound.

Memphis, TN rockers Every Mother’s Nightmare (EMN) launched the second video, ‘Here’s To The Ones’ from their dynamic new album ‘RESURRECT THE FAITHFUL’.

Released on October 23rd, ‘RESURRECT THE FAITHFUL’ is impacting radio around the globe and continues to gain momentum. The album is being hailed as the best in the band’s career. Click the link below to hear and see the video:

‘Here’s To The Ones’ is inspired by a fan and Veteran ‘Mighty Mike’, who met the band at a previous show. He waited all day to meet the band and when he finally did, he asked them to sign his prosthetic leg and take pictures. ‘Mighty Mikes’ actions had a profound affect on lead vocalist and EMN founder Rick Ruhl. “He’s seen some shit and it really got to me. When telling this story in recent interviews, it still chokes me up everytime. We owe our military who put themselves on the frontline to protect the freedoms of everyone in the U.S.. Freedom at cost, Blood’s what we pay.” says Rick Ruhl

DON’T SLEEP – COVER TOM PETTY’S “RUNNIN’ DOWN A DREAM”

Posted in classic rock, Hard Rock, Music, news, rock music, world news with tags , , , , , on October 16, 2020 by Metal Odyssey

East Coast hardcore torchbearers DON’T SLEEP are celebrating the life and times of Tom Petty, with their previously unreleased cover of the legendary songwriter’s track “Runnin’ Down A Dream.”

Listen To “Runnin’ Down A Dream” Now.

“Tom Petty is a musical treasure,” admits frontman Dave Smalley. “His music is one of those rare things that nearly everyone vibes on – everyone from hippies to hardcore hoodlums. When DON’T SLEEP was talking about what cover song we wanted to do, there were lots of great ideas but there was always one guy saying “yeah but…” But when our lead guitarist Tom McGrath suggested Tom Petty, and specifically this song, there was zero hesitation from anyone. To make a cover great, you need to feel it. And everyone felt it. We tracked this in The Green Room studio in Harrisburg, PA with producer Matt Holmes, and it was done super late in the evening, after midnight. Energy levels through the roof, karma bright. I had a ton of fun singing it, and the words are freaking phenomenal. We salute you Tom!”

DON’T SLEEP’s chemistry is made up of hardcore vets fronted by Smalley, known for his lung-emptying exhales with Dag Nasty, ALL, Down By Law, DYS and others. The band released their debut album Turn The Tide earlier this year (September 4th), produced by Brian McTernan (Be Well, Battery) and Gorilla Biscuits / Youth Of Today member Walter Schreifels. The album follows their two EPs – Don’t Sleep (2017) and Bring The Light (2018). No stranger to the stage, DON’T SLEEP has toured with Shelter, Sick Of It All, Madball, Face To Face, and performed on the final Vans Warped Tour in 2018.

Eddie Van Halen – Forever

Posted in classic rock, Hard Rock, Music, news, rock music, world news with tags , , , , on October 8, 2020 by Metal Odyssey

Guitar World – February 2009

I express my condolences to the family, friends and fans of Eddie Van Halen. What else can be written about Eddie Van Halen which has not already been written or said? He was beyond incredible playing the guitar, writing songs and pioneering entirely new and wondrous sounds to Rock, Hard Rock and Heavy Metal combined.

The Van Halen albums are like baseball and apple pie, to me. American made, West Coast Hard Rock. Historically speaking, Van Halen dominated Hard Rock during those very late seventies and stretching well into the early nineties. A music icon, is Eddie Van Halen. I, like countless others, have accepted the sounds of Eddie Van Halen’s guitar like it is an appendage. Eddie Van Halen’s guitar playing always sounds so familiar, comforting, inspiring, exhilarating, personal and monumental, all rolled up together like a sacred security blanket.

Rest and Rock in peace, Eddie Van Halen. Thank you for sharing your musical magic with the world; to be enjoyed by generations forever.

I still cannot wrap my head around this year thus far; it has been a nightmare directly from hell. – Stone

BARONESS – Release Limited Edition “Live at Maida Vale BBC – Vol. II” For Record Store Day’s Black Friday

Posted in Hard Rock, Music, music news, news, rock music, world news with tags , , , , on October 7, 2020 by Metal Odyssey

Oct. 7, 2020 – Baroness release Live at Maida Vale BBC – Vol. II, a limited edition vinyl release featuring four tracks from the band’s Fall 2019 session at the famed London studio, as part of this year’s Record Store Day Black Friday event (Nov. 27, Abraxan Hymns).

Live at Maida Vale BBC – Vol. II track list:

  1. Throw Me An Anchor
  2. Borderlines
  3. I’m Already Gone
  4. Tourniquet/Can Oscura

The EP was recorded during the band’s European tour in support of Gold & Grey, with Baroness joining BBC Radio 1 Rock Show host Daniel P. Carter and producer Simon Askew at Maida Vale Studios on Sept. 27. Live at Maida Vale BBC – Vol II features black splatter vinyl with an etched b-side, custom artwork created by Baroness’ John Baizley and will retail for $23.98.

Baroness released Live at Maida Valle – BBC in 2013, following the band’s Yellow & Green tour. Pitchfork said the four-song offering “displayed the same grit and drive for which Baroness first garnered acclaim,” while PopMatters said the collection “crackles with energy.”

The band’s most recent release, Gold & Grey (http://smarturl.it/baroness-goldandgrey) arrived in June of 2019 with Stereogum saying the collection “is the best thing Baroness has ever done… a masterpiece,” NME declaring it “a work of art in the truest sense of the word “ and NPR, noting the synchronicity between Baroness’ music and imagery, observing that “Gold & Grey feels like a callback to the heyday of the rock album as art object.” The 17-track release debuted atop Billboard’s Hard Rock Albums Sales and Independent Albums’ Charts and found the band gracing the covers of both Revolver and Kerrang! magazines. The band documented the album’s creation in a series of videos, dubbed “Making Gold & Grey” (https://smarturl.it/makinggoldandgrey).

With Baroness’ 2020 tour schedule canceled, the four-piece released “Tourniquet (Socially Distant)” in April, offering fans a new, stirring rendition of the song (https://youtu.be/HeZw2W2L4Ss) and a message of hope: “Be safe. Be good to each other. Act with personal and civic responsibility. We’ll see you again soon.” The band convened last month for a livestream event that saw them perform Gold & Grey live in its entirety for the first time ever. Metal Insider said the special performance was “mesmerizing, emotional and, perhaps, the band at its creative height thus far.”

MARK BOALS & RING OF FIRE “All The Best” – Releasing On October 9th, 2020

Posted in Metal on August 7, 2020 by Metal Odyssey

Mark Boals - Ring Of Fire - All The Best - cover promo pic - 2020 - #33MO333ILGDPS

Respected metal vocalist Mark Boals will release a two album ‘best of’ collection, All The Best!, covering his work both as a solo artist and with his band Ring Of Fire on October 9, 2020. Doug Aldrich, Tony MacAlpine, Jeff Kollman, Neil Citron, Vitalij Kuprij, Vinny Appice, Virgil Donati, Erik Norlander, Chris Brooks, and Steve Weingart are the list of musicians who have recorded with him on these efforts over the years.

Pre-order/save “All The Best!” HERE: https://orcd.co/allthebest

Mark Boals says: “I am very happy and proud to announce the release of this collection of my solo and Ring Of Fire band albums! Included are songs from my first solo album, which was only released in Japan and is very hard to find (rare), with guitars by the great Doug Aldrich. My second solo album turned into the band Ring Of Fire later on, because the lineup was too good to only work together on one album, and I wanted it to continue, which it did, for four more studio albums. With Tony Macalpine and Virgil Donati working together, there was a chemistry of genius, and with the addition of Vitalij Kuprij, it made a magnificent blend of magic!”

Continues Boals, “On my “Edge Of The World” solo album, I worked with several other great musicians and a hero of my childhood and the best hard rock drummer in history, Vinnie Appice! When I listen to all those very high notes I had sang, and the incredible amount of virtuoso notes played per song, I surprise myself sometimes, hahaha! We were all pushing ourselves to newer heights of excellence in those days. A lot of good memories come back when I hear these songs…Riding motorcycles around Los Angeles with Tony Macalpine and always ending up hanging out on the beach drinking beers til the wee hours…Having Snoop Dogg in the next room of the studio we were recording in (Paramount Studios), and having him listen to our music and telling me that I needed to smoke something with him, LOL, and it DID help hahaha. Recording keyboards in a Beverly Hills mansion belonging to a famous movie star friend, with Vitalij Kuprij, and drinking rare whiskey together after the sessions and talking all night…”

Boals concludes, “I really enjoyed making these albums and I hope you will enjoy just as much listening to them too! Wishing good times, good health, and happy listening to all!”

Mark Boals is one of the signature voices of the Neoclassical Metal subgenre. This is no surprise to fans of the genre as Mark fronted Yngwie Malmsteen’s ‘Rising Force’ in 1986, releasing the now legendary album “Trilogy” along with five more albums and some long-form videos over the years.

Mark has also recorded three solo albums: “Ignition” (originally released only in Japan in 1998), “Ring of Fire” (2000), and “Edge of the World” (2002).

In 2002, he launched his own band “Ring of Fire” (based off the title of a previous solo album) with members Tony Macalpine, and later on George Bellas, on guitar, Virgil Donati on drums, Philip Bynoe on bass, and Vitalij Kuprij on keyboards (and on “The Oracle” album George Bellas). The band went on to release four milestone albums and one live CD/DVD recorded in Japan. Most recently, Mark recorded a melodic metal album with Vision Divine and Labyrinth guitarist Olaf Thorsen under the name Shining Black.

Mark Boals is a classically trained singer and has performed classical concerts with various orchestras as a Tenor solo and has performed and recorded opera arias on some of his albums and tours.

STEELHEART – 1989 Cassette Sampler I Bought!

STEELHEART - cassette sampler - cover - 1989 - 33MO33ILGD

If you are into the hard to find “promotional use only” CDs, vinyl and cassettes and/or STEELHEART then you’ll surely dig this! I recently stumbled upon this STEELHEART cassette sampler, while on a trip to the wonderful city of West Bend, Wisconsin. Released sometime in 1989 via MCA, this cassette sampler was suited to promote the 1990 debut and self-titled album: STEELHEART.

The record store I bought this at is The Exclusive Company; famous for being (as stated on their website) “Americas Oldest Full-line Independent Record Store”. Yes, this grand establishment was loaded with Metal!! The atmosphere and vibe within took me straight back to the 80s; when Metal was king at every record store! By the way, Miljenko Matijevic sang his Metal heart out on that debut STEELHEART album, in my Metal opinion.

STEELHEART - sampler cassette liner notes - 1989 - ILGD33MO

This groovy cassette only contains excerpts of the songs on the track list. Who cares if it’s only excerpts? I sure don’t! I love the collectable aspect of this STEELHEART cassette sampler; plus I only paid two dollars for it! $2!! That’s a steal of a Metal deal! Metal be thy name! – Stone

Did You Know: STEELHEART originated from Norwalk, Connecticut.

“The term ‘re-record’ makes me cringe, this is not that,” explains Lynch: “We re-invented the wheel on this record. It’s really a different animal than the original! Fans won’t be disappointed!”

Logan adds: “30 years later here we are celebrating the first song I penned and wrote for the band Lynch Mob, ‘Wicked Sensation’. This one is for the fans that have been there from the beginning, My recommendation is to listen to it loud!!”

The new cover of Wicked Sensation Reimagined was hand drawn by mid-west comic artist Andrew Owens as a tribute to the original cover art. The project was mixed and mastered by Chris “The Wizard” Collier.

With the help of Robbie Crane (Black Star Riders) on bass and Brian Tichy on drums, George Lynch and Oni Logan bring passion and power into these newly created arrangements, take nothing away from the old versions, but bring new light and magic to the material. The songs continue to sound fresh and timeless and will be ready to garner a whole new legion of fans for the next thirty years!

The track listing for Wicked Sensation Reimagined is:

AZATH – Demo 2018 Cassette Tape Review

Posted in Metal on June 21, 2020 by Metal Odyssey

AZATH - Demo 2018 - #333MO8ILGDSO

This AZATH (Demo 2018) cassette tape I purchased from Caligari Records. There’s only 3 songs on this sucker and it has served me right. Vocalist Derek Orthner produces the guttural noise and growls that I would compare to a captured demon inside an ammunition box that is trying to communicate to the outside world. The production is low-end, musically leaning towards the old caverns of this beloved genre. Trust in my advice that the Death Metal vibes are extreme on each song.

The other band members on Demo 2018 are: guitarist BW, bassist, Andrew Lee and drummer Vvornth. Andrew Lee also provides additional guitar solos. Hopefully AZATH will thunder along for many years to come. I have listened to this cassette a TON of times and will continue to do so because I can.

AZATH are from Los Angeles California. Their brand of sonic Death should be embraced by many generations of Death Metal loyalists. I really dig these type of demo releases from the underground because not many people own the physical copy like I do. This Metal mentality of mine goes way back to the early 80’s and I’ll never shake it off. Metal Be Thy Name – Stone

SCORPIONS – ‘Big City Nights’ – A Look At A Terrific Greatest Hits CD From 1998

Posted in classic rock, Hard Rock, Heavy Metal, Metal, Music, news, world news with tags , , , , , , , , , on May 27, 2020 by Metal Odyssey

Many years ago, I bought this cool Scorpions CD: Big City Nights (Rebound Records). I remember buying it new and it was pretty cheap; the price was around $5 or so. I believe it was Walmart that had this CD too; sometimes my memory amazes me, despite not remembering what I ate for dinner yesterday. Truth. Here is a one-sentence rant before I continue: Scorpions should be inducted into The Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame!!

Okay, I shall continue onward. I love this band. Every era of Scorpions I love. I was fortunate to see them headline the M3 Rock Festival back in 2010, with my great/best Metal Buddy Scott Coverdale. What a fun time. Just about every song on this Big City Nights compilation was performed by the Scorpions at that M3 Rock Festival; at least to the best of my (once again) amazing memory. Chuckle, chuckle. I’ve presented the tracklist for this CD below, no worries.

I have grown extremely tired of Still Loving You and I’m certain I’m not alone. That song never really hit me. No big deal for it’s the only Scorpions song out of their iconic catalog that I just skip over. Rock You Like A Hurricane is teetering on the edge of being tiresome for me. What saves this song for me at this point is the guitar solo. Enough negativity! I do get psyched out of my cranium by Can’t Live Without You, No One Like You, Big City Nights and Rhythm Of Love. All these songs I’ve mentioned in this post are on this CD.

I’m happy I bought this Scorpions CD when I did. I have no plans to get rid of it either. That’s a good thing, due to my selling off of many CDs in recent years. As you look over the tracklist on the back of this CD, you’ll see there are 4 songs that are live versions. The live songs are from the stupendous World Wide Live from 1985, with the exception of Wind Of Change which is from Live Bites (1995).

Granted, this CD compilation is missing many classic Scorpions songs; heck, it’s only one CD and I’m certain it was never meant to be a definitive Scorpions greatest hits package. Thank you for visiting Metal Odyssey, I truly appreciate it. Please stay safe out there, help out one another and… Metal Be Thy Name. – Stone
