Horrified - Descent Into Putridity - promo cover pic

5 Out Of 5 METAL Fists!

Metalfistredbckgrndsmall5

HORRIFIED – The world of Death Metal is a much more potent and kick-ass place to roam, especially when bands like the UK’s Horrified release such a blistering excellent album such as Descent Into Putridity. Old School Death Metal is celebrated on this album of seven blood soaked songs; seven songs of pummeling and relentless sonic assaults to my cranium!

There’s something about Death Metal that makes me feel like all is okay, just like a security blanket is to a tot. Trust me, my Metal brethren, when I say all is okay with this Horrified album! These songs suck me in, like a Death Metal vacuum to the outer-banks of Hell itself and I refuse to resist! Whoa! I have no problem letting the deathly grooves and insane speed of Horrified’s Death Metal engulf me, man it feels so right! Dan Alderson’s guttural vocal sounds are what gives this album that much more of a rabid and infectious bite!

Descent Into Putridity was released on October 21st, via cult Spanish label Memento Mori Records. It is amazing for me to realize that this is the debut album from Horrified; for this band plays as if they’ve been brutally assaulting eardrums together for a decade or more! For me to pick a favorite song on this album is ridiculous; it’s the entire seven song merciless sonic surge, that has made my Metal week so grand! Metal be thy name – Stone.

Below, blast the volume high for HORRIFIED and support this amazing band! Whoa!

4 Out Of 5 METAL Fists!

Metalfistredbckgrndsmall4

CASTLE FREAK – What do you get when you mix Death Metal, Punk, Thrash, Horror Metal and Extreme together? The end Metal result is an underground band known as: CASTLE FREAK. From parts unknown and signed to Tridroid Records, CASTLE FREAK plays some damn good, fast and very heavy stuff at that. Yes, CASTLE FREAK are quite good at this Metal thing they’re into. Even the album, um, cassette artwork is freaking underground!

With vocals that resonate the angst of Punk and pissed-off aura of Extreme Metal, I have found myself very pleased with every listen, indeed. Underground Metal should kick severe ass and this Still Rotting album has kicked my ass. All five songs on Still Rotting are decent beyond hell and serve as a Metal treat for those of us that still believe in the blue-collar Metal alleyways and hidden Metal fields of dreams. Metal be thy name – Stone.

Crank Up and BUY Some CASTLE FREAK, Below! Whoa!

POWERLORD “The Awakening” – Album Is: Stone’s METAL Pick Of The Day!

Powerlord - The Awakening - promo cover pic - 2014

POWERLORD – Back on August 19th of this year, Shadow Kingdom Records released a 6 song album, The Awakening, from Powerlord. This band no longer exists yet their early 80’s Metal sure does! Powerlord were a Speed Metal band with Thrash stylings in the mix. The True Metal sound and feel of this band is as identifiable as grandma’s fresh-baked apple pie. That’s no lie. This album from Metal’s yesteryear has been another favorite of mine during 2014 and will be for a Metal millennium to come! Or more.

I need to write about the Metal that makes me feel freaking good and Powerlord puts me in that Metal zone! The echo tunnel vocals are old school, man! Only that early 80’s Metal scene was able to capture those kind of vocals or so it seems. There isn’t really a dull moment on The Awakening. Guitar driven, baby! My fellow Metal brethren will understand when I admit, that this album is one you just keep listening to over and over, both for its quality Metal and sonic nostalgia!

Powerlord - band promo pic - circa early 80's - #3383

Some may say that this Powerlord album sounds like a decent demo of early 80’s U.S. Metal. However, it’s much better than that! This band played tight and obviously had a grand sense of songwriting, rhythm and understanding of that era of Metal. It’s a sad shame that Powerlord never went further or were discovered by a rep in the record industry that knew what they were doing. No one can change the past, we can however, enjoy the Metal legacy of Powerlord and realize that their songs would indeed stand the test of Metal time. If you dig early 80’s Metal bands like Obsession, Cirith Ungol and Manowar’s Hail To England, then you should start salivating for this Powerlord album now. Metal be thy name – Stone.

Do yourself a Metal favor and listen to/buy some POWERLORD:

POWERLORD The Awakening – Track Listing:

  1. Masters of Death
  1. Malice
  1. Silent Terror
  1. The Invasion of the Lords
  1. Merciless Titans

BLASTFEST Announce Final Bands Including WATAIN

Posted in Extreme Metal, Heavy Metal, Metal, Music, music news, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , , on October 28, 2014 by Metal Odyssey

Blastfest - 2015 - February - promo festival flyer - Satyricon

The lineup announcements had to come to an end eventually and Blastfest have now revealed the final 3 bands to the main lineup. But that’s not to say what you see on the burgeoning Blastfest poster is all that’s happening. No, no, no, there will be more!

There’s already a lineup that would bring tears to the eyes of even the toughest metalhead with bands such as Demilich, Satyricon, Decapitated, Paradise Lost, At The Gates & Moonsorrow… and just last week a cruise up the Norwegian fjords with live bands was announced as part of the first days festivities. We still have to hear more… the clinics, the stand up comedy, the exhibitions, and lots more have yet to be revealed!

For now, let’s leave this here… Sweden’s Uppsala upstarts, the black metal powerhouse, the entity of its own who released possibly their best work to date just last year with ‘The Hunt’, yes, the mighty Watain have been announced as another Blastfest 2015 headliner. The festival has also welcomed Austria’s sickest death metal export Schrinec Plays Pungent Stench and Bergens blackened deaththrash horde Grimfist.

Watain - promo band pic - 2014 - #6679W

WATAIN

Are you sworn to the black? Well, then you’ll be happy to hear that the final Blastfest headliner for the sophomore edition of the festival will be none other than the Swedish legions of the black light, Watain! Prepare yourself for fire, brimstone, and the real deal; carcasses, blood, foul stench and hatred in abundance. Lawless darkness commence!

Schrinec Does Pungent Stench - Promo band pic - 2014 - #70

Schrinec Does Pungent Stench

Blastfest bring you a nice little platter of splatter! Schrinec Does Pungent Stench! They will be playing the twisted material from the Austrian cult band’s first three albums. Basically there’s going to be some proper old school death metal coming your way.

Grimfist - classic band logo - B&W - 2014

GRIMFIST

Norwegian Grimfist released two highly-acclaimed albums around the turn of the century, and seemed to disappear into obscurity not long after. But lately, they’ve been at it again, flying high the banner of brutality! At Blastfest 2015 they will be doing their first show in eight years with an as-of-yet still undisclosed new lineup. You’re probably in for yet another all-star Norwegian ensemble!

Lineup:

Alfahanne | Aspherium | Asphyx | At The Gates | Baptism | Blood Red Throne | Bolzer | Bömbers | Borknagar | Byfrost | Craft | Crib45 | Cryptopsy | Dark Funeral | Dark Tranquility | Dead To This World | Decapitated | Demilich | Den Saakaldte | Djevelkult | Destroyer 666 | Destruction | Endstille | Esoteric | Falloch | Finntroll | Gehenna | Grimfist | Hecate Enthroned | Impaled Nazarene | Kall | Melechesh | Moonsorrow | Morgoth | Naer Mataron | Orange Goblin | Paradise Lost | Primordial | Purple Hill Witch | Rotting Christ | Samael | Sarke | Sarkom | Satan | Saturnus | Satyricon | Schrinec Plays Pungent Stench | The Sickening | Tortorum | Tsjuder | Vallenfyre | Watain | Winterfylleth | Wyruz

The age of putridity has finally arrived. UK old school death metal lads Horrified have released their début full-length Descent Into Putridity via cult Spanish label Memento Mori Records. Channeling the spirit of Pestilence, Autopsy and Dismember, the band unload a barrage of riffs and thundering drums, topped by Dan Alderson’s gruff bark to honor the legacy of Martin Van Drunen (Asphyx, Hail Of Bullets) and Lars-Göran Petrov (Entombed).

“We are excited to take part in the launch of the first ever Metal Diva Fest in Toronto. It’s great to realize that today we have more and more women participating in metal, both in Canada and the rest of the world. BATTLECROSS – Confirms Winter Warriors Headlining Tour Honoring America’s Veterans

Posted in Metal, metal bands, metal music, Music, music news, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , , on October 22, 2014 by Metal Odyssey

Battlecross - Wretched - Winter Warriors Headlining Tour - promo flyer - 2014

Following their originally scheduled support slot on the recently cancelled Machine Head tour, Detroit, Michigan’s BATTLECROSS will be heading back out on the road next month for more than two dozen headlining dates through North America. Dubbed the Winter Warriors tour, the trek will kick off on November 26th in Grand Rapids, Michigan and conclude on December 30th in Worcester, Massachusetts. Support will come from Wretched and War Of Ages.

In honor of the US Armed Forces, this Veterans Day BATTLECROSS will make a limited number of tickets available to VET TIX so that local members of the military may attend a show in their city at no cost. The band will also be donating a portion of the funds generated from sales of a limited edition tour shirt to a local veteran’s charity, and choose a veteran in each market for a VIP experience. On Veteran’s Day (November 11th) fans can nominate a friend or family member who has served our country and share their story and photo, with a member of the military being chosen to win a guitar and more at the end of the tour. On the same day, the band will also bring back merchandise from their first Metal Blade album, Pursuit Of Honor, in their official merch store, with a portion of the proceeds being set aside to benefit the Wounded Warriors Project, a veterans service organization that offers a variety of programs, services and events to wounded veterans of the military following the events of September 11th, 2001.

To learn more about honoring a veteran through the tour or to help underwrite tickets for veterans, click HERE. Members of the military can inquire about free admission to the tour at www.vettix.org.

Guitarist Hiran Deraniyagala adds: “We won’t let a cancelled tour stop BATTLECROSS from performing for our fans and the Winter Warriors Tour with Wretched and War Of Ages is the perfect way to remind our fans that you keep moving forward when challenges come up in life. Who knows perseverance more than those who bravely serve our country and we are honored to dedicate this tour to them. We are a band that stands for ideals such as loyalty, honor, sacrifice and perseverance through our lyrics and how we conduct ourselves, and hope the tour will be a fitting tribute to every service member who attends. We look forward to raging with our fans who serve or have served in the US Armed Forces and thank them again for their service.”

KAINE – To Reunite With Original Drummer For One-Off Show

Posted in Heavy Metal, Metal, metal music, Music, music news, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , on October 22, 2014 by Metal Odyssey

Kaine - The Waystone - promo cover pic - 2014

Kaine are pleased to announce that they will be reuniting with their original drummer and fellow band founder, Josh Moreton, for their gig at the Owl Sanctuary in Norwich (England) on January 17th, 2015. Current drummer, Chris MacKinnon is unable to make the show due to a family commitment.

Rage commented: “Josh was a very big part of Kaine’s foundation and we spent many hours putting together the songs that would end up on Falling Through Freedom. We also spent hours together jamming in sheds and taking those hard steps to becoming a regular gigging band which we were able to do after two years of solid work. It’s great to be playing with him again for this one show.”

This marks the first time Josh has played with the band in two years. Josh has since been playing drums in Dismanibus and Forged in Black.

Josh added: “I’m looking forward to a fun jam, sharing the stage with some old friends and excellent musicians again. Since then I’ve been working with Dismanibus on a new album. Recently, I’ve joined the Heavy Metal titans Forged in Black and we have our single The Exodus coming out on December 1st that I’m excited about, as it’s a pretty good song. I’ve seen Kaine many times since I left and they’ve gotten pretty tight, so it should be good fun.”

The original Kaine line-up came close to reunion earlier this year with the founding members agreeing to do a show which unfortunately fell through. The line-up for the Norwich show will effectively be reuniting the Falling Through Freedom line-up with the addition of Saxon Davids on guitar. The band will be doing a mixture of new and old material on the night.

THE CRINN – Return With A New Track, Reveal Artwork For Forthcoming Album ‘Shadowbreather’

Posted in Extreme Metal, Metal, metal music, Music, music news, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , , on October 21, 2014 by Metal Odyssey

The Crinn - promo band pic - band logo - 2014 - #1776

Minnesota’s Extreme Metal experimentalists, THE CRINN, have returned with a face melting new track entitled Silent Betrayer!! Little has been heard from the band since the release of their debut full length album, Dreaming Saturn, via Nuclear Blast Records back in 2010. Aside from a few one-off live performances and few and far between social media updates, THE CRINN have been excessively quiet over the last few years.

All that changes with the release of Silent Betrayer, which is taken from their forthcoming album Shadowbreather. Silent Betrayer is now streaming via THE CRINN‘s Bandcamp page, as well as their Official YouTube Channel. The artwork for Shadowbreather has also been revealed and can be seen (below).

The Crinn - Shadowbreather - promo album cover pic - 2014

Above: cover art for Shadowbreather

Vocalist John Nelson had the following to say about the upcoming release:It has been a long 4 years since we released our first full length record, Dreaming Saturn, and we are beyond pumped to showcase “Silent Betrayer” from our upcoming album entitled SHADOWBREATHER! The first thing people might notice, contrary to our last release, is that the new album was not formed as a concept. The direction we went with was to write individual songs that are somewhat shorter in length, more in line with our Self-Titled EP. Stylistically we have no rules. We write what comes to us. These songs are a true expression of our experimental nature with a bit of a focus on making our sound meaner and heavier. We really hope you enjoy “Silent Betrayer,” and we will be releasing more news on the album soon!!!

THE CRINN – Silent Betrayer:

Shadowbreather was recorded at Signaturetone Recording with producer/engineer Adam Tucker. A release date has not yet been set.

2014 also marks a decade of existence for THE CRINN, having formed during August of 2004 in St. Paul, MN. From its inception, the band decided to use an explorative writing style, without concern for genre exclusivity due to their frustration with the average and mundane, breakdown oriented metal scene. Their mixture of technical riffs, off-time grooves and jarring transitions has led to the band being labeled as mathcore, techmetal, techgrind, jazzmetal and even noodlegrind. Fans of THE DILLINGER ESCAPE PLAN and PSYOPUS owe it to themselves to give THE CRINN a listen!
