Vancouver, Canada’s ASTRAKHAN are proud to announce the upcoming release of debut full-length album, Reward in Purposeon CD and vinyl formats. The highly anticipated follow-up to 2014 EP A Tapestry of Scabs and Skin will be released June 10 on War on Music and Sunmask Records. Check out the Reward in Purpose teaser video at this location or below:

Recorded by Jesse Gander and Mastered by Stu McKillop at Rain City Recorders, Reward in Purpose stands as a singular piece of music and is meant to be taken as it is; the whole is indeed bigger than the sum of its parts. This album explores the perceptions and experience of the band over the last few years together and culminates with the realization that the true reward for which we search with any passionate endeavour is ultimately a matter of experiencing the highs and lows that come with the pursuit of pure expression. It is simply a matter being occupied with something that matters to you.

A video of the band performing new song “Omajod” at Vancouver Psychfest can be viewed at this location or below:

Album artwork comes courtesy of Nick Patterson. ASTRAKHAN vocalist/guitarist Rob Zawistowski created the design and layout. Thanks to Amy Ray Photography for band photos, including the album’s back cover.

Quiet Riot - circa 1983 - publicity band card - #1984KD

QUIET RIOT will forever have a place in my Metal heart; their #1 studio album Metal Health  is one incredible reason why. Oh, the good-times memories of partying to QUIET RIOT. Whoa. Both Scott Coverdale and I must mention QUIET RIOT to each other at least twice a week; perhaps at times, twice a day.

Without question, QUIET RIOT exploded onto the Heavy Metal scene with their groundbreaking 1983 Metal Health album along with their historic performance at the 1983 US Festival on Heavy Metal Day (March 29). The rest is QUIET RIOT history that shall never be ignored here at Metal Odyssey.

AC/DC – Any New Singer Now Would Make The Band DC/AC

Posted in classic rock, Hard Rock, Heavy Metal, Music, news, rock music with tags , , , , , on March 21, 2016 by Metal Odyssey

ACDC - Classic Band Logo - #10014

Let’s skip over all the he said/she said baloney and get right to the Metal point here. A new lead singer for AC/DC, at this stage of the game, would be nonsense. Give me a fu*%ing break, please. Back when the legendary Bon Scott passed away and Brian Johnson came on board, the band was young, dynamic and had decades ahead of them to take over the world; as they eventually did. Back in 1980, the Hard Rock world was still evolving by the day, where now Hard Rock has stalled with creativity like a 1972 Ford Pinto.

Without the great Brian Johnson on the mic, AC/DC is over, Angus Young, whether you want to admit it or not. Guest vocalist doesn’t cut it here; it would still be a new vocalist whether we all like it or not. There comes a time in life when you realize it’s over and even Michael Jordan and Derek Jeter figured that out. It is what it is and AC/DC pretty much was.

ACDC - Back In Black - promo album cover pic - #1980

Drummer Phil Rudd got himself in hefty legal trouble and is no longer with the band, while Malcolm Young has health issues and is no longer with the band too. To top it all off with a brand new singer, AC/DC would just become DC/AC. Sure, there was Van Halen having Sammy Hagar step in; only any fan knows that band was really Van Hagar. Van Halen III was an anomaly and (good guy) Gary Cherone is certainly not at fault for that. Queen has proven to me that they are just a super all-star band without the iconic Freddie Mercury. Brian May couldn’t leave well enough alone, in my Metal opinion.

I absolutely love Queensrÿche and when super-talented Todd La Torre replaced the enigmatic Geoff Tate I was stunned. Still, that lead singer change made perfect sense (IMO) due to the surrounding circumstances of that time and Queensrÿche is not Led Zeppelin, KISS, The Who or The Rolling Stones either. Queensrÿche have more than paid their dues and are back stronger than ever. Again, it was different circumstances. A new lead singer for AC/DC in 2016 would equate to the New York Yankees moving to Nebraska. It’s just not a good idea at all.

ACDC - For Those About To Rock We Salute You - promo cover pic - #1981BJAY

I could go on and on with comparisons of world-famous bands changing lead singers; only it would not change my mind about AC/DC saying adios to Brian Johnson. I have my incredible memories of seeing AC/DC live and own their entire (U.S.) discography. I grew up with AC/DC and this band’s music has done wonders for me, through thick and thin! I am not about to embrace an AC/DC Part III now, even if the lead singer were to be someone famous and that I respect dearly. In the end, a new/guest singer for AC/DC would make this iconic band into a revival band of themselves. How do you feel about this? Leave a comment or a rant. Get it off your Metal chest. Metal Be Thy Name. – Stone

SUBLIMINAL FEAR – To Release Their Third Studio Album “Escape From Leviathan” In May!

Posted in Heavy Metal, Metal, metal music, Music, news, rock music with tags , , , , on March 21, 2016 by Metal Odyssey

Subliminal Fear - promo band pic - 2016 - #9989933ILMF

Subliminal Fear‘s new album title is Escape From Leviathan. After 2 years and a half working in studio, the third album is finally ready, with 10 tracks and they show several innovations about past musical style with a greater attention to melodies and with a modern sound. The early sound has evolved into a “cyber metal” with extreme and melodic vocals, djent guitars, a huge groove and with electronic and industrial synth. Now, the band’s line-up is composed by 2 vocalists, to express better all-around potential of the new sound, also in live shows.

The new music style of this Italian band mixes Death Metal, Electronic Music and catchy melodies and it’s for lovers of Sybreed, Mnemic and Fear Factory. The third full length has been produced, mixed and mastered by Giuseppe Dentamaro and Subliminal Fear in Golem Dungeon Studios. All keyboards, samples and programming have been arranged by Botys Beezart (Godyva).

Subliminal Fear - Escape From Leviathan - promo album cover pic - #MO099099

Album’s artwork has been realized by Seth Siro Anton (Moonspell, Paradise Lost, Soilwork, Sybreed, Nile, Septicflesh), based on the lyrics concept: a futuristic and apocalyptic vision of the world and the society, inspired by movies like Terminator, Alien and Matrix.

Furthermore the album will include also the participation of international guests:

Guillaume Bideau (Mnemic, One-Way Mirror), Jon Howard (Threat Signal, Arkaea) and Lawrence Mackrory (Darkane).

The album is released both physically and digitally by a Finnish label Inverse Records on May 13th 2016.

RANDY RHOADS – Remembered

Randy Rhoads was born on December 6th, 1956, in California. On March 19th in 1982, while on tour with Ozzy Osbourne, Randy Rhoads passed away in a plane accident, in Florida. Randy Rhoads was only 25 years old, on the day of his death. As a co-founder of the legendary Quiet Riot and lead guitarist and songwriter for the super Ozzy Osbourne, Randy Rhoads certainly left his mark on the Hard Rock and Heavy Metal world like none other.

Randy Rhoads will always be most remembered for his works with Ozzy Osbourne and the two Ozzy studio albums: Blizzard Of Ozz (1980) and Diary Of A Madman (1981). Both of these albums are sacred, within the Metal world, in my Metal opinion. I could never, ever grow tired of these two amazing Ozzy albums; amazing due to the guitar wizardry of Randy Rhoads!

I’ve now lived to be fifty, which is obviously double the lifetime of Randy Rhoads. Seems unreal when I put it into that context. Life is a gift and is never to be taken for granted. Life is to be cherished and celebrated. Today I celebrate the iconic music that Randy Rhoads has left us all to enjoy. Rest in peace, Randy Rhoads. – Stone

Flotsam And Jetsam - promo band pic - 2016 - #MO99099777ILMF

As reported by AFM Records:

U.S. Thrash Metal legends Flotsam and Jetsam have inked a worldwide deal with AFM Records. The band’s new album, simply titled “Flotsam and Jetsam” will be released on May 20th.

We’re honored that Flotsam and Jetsam have decided to join our roster. Of course we’ve followed their career for many years and always valued the band’s qualities. This new, self-titled album is a blast! We’ve been convinced right from the very first demos sent. It was obvious to us why the album is titled as it is: “Flotsam and Jetsam” holds the essence of what defines the band – this album is a statement, something to be proud of and we are proud to start working with the band with such a special release.

The band states:
“Flotsam and Jetsam really appreciated the fact that AFM laid out a legitimate, business plan for us when they made their offer to sign us. We believe they are as committed to us as a band, as we are to providing them with quality metal to get behind and promote. Along with signing to a new label, all the forward movement for the band in the last two years has also allowed us to partner with new team members; like Chris Collier of CMC21 Productions, who just completed the mixing and mastering of the album and Andy Pilkington of Very Metal Art out of the UK, for the album cover and stage production art, who are both doing a phenomenal job for us. We’re looking forward to playing the music on this album live, which hasn’t been a luxury for the band on past releases, as well as debuting our new stage look.”

PRIMAL FEAR “Rulebreaker” – A Metal Odyssey Album Review

PRIMAL FEAR - Rulebreaker - promo album cover pic - 2016 - #MO990099ILMFM

5 Out Of 5 METAL Fists!

Metalfistredbckgrndsmall5

PRIMAL FEAR – I’ve come to the Metal conclusion that the powerful PRIMAL FEAR continues to get better and better with each new studio album they release. I’m guilty of being a PRIMAL FEAR loyalist, I’ll readily admit. Only give me a break here, in view of the fact Rulebreaker is an undeniable Metal steamroller of eleven songs. This new studio album from PRIMAL FEAR is my favorite Metal album thus far in 2016 and I don’t believe it will be unseated as such.

Rulebreaker begins with Angels Of Mercy and this commanding song sets the Metal stage for the remainder of the album. There’s a trio of world-class guitarists (Magnus Karlsson, Alex Beyrodt, Tom Naumann) in PRIMAL FEAR that gives Rulebreaker its jaw dropping Metal spirit. Holy Metal shit are there countless mouth watering riffs, leads, rhythms and solos that catapult from this album! I thank my Metal stars every night that these songs were written and recorded by PRIMAL FEAR. My Metal God, I do.

The title track and The End Is Near are just two song examples that feature the great Ralf Scheepers falsetto. Ralf is all over this entire album with his ignited vocals! My favorite song on Rulebreaker is the 10:45 epic: We Walk Without Fear. The progressive style intro gives way to what PRIMAL FEAR do best and that’s shred, sing and pound their Metal brilliance straight through my Metal psyche. Spectacular song it is, in my Metal world.

It wouldn’t be a PRIMAL FEAR album without a killer song titled In Metal We Trust. (Ha, ha). Rulebreaker finishes with a fast and hefty song titled: Raving Mad. Honestly, this album does not give me a moment to catch my Metal breath. I speak Metal truth, here. I can’t see how any Metal loving human being out there can pass over this album.

The renowned Matt Sinner on bass and backing vocals along with Francesco Jovino on drums explode their beats, creating every reason to bang my multi decades old Metal head into Metal rapture! Whoa. In conclusion, Rulebreaker is a True Power Metal album for the Metal ages. Metal Be Thy Name. – Stone
