FIRST NORTH AMERICAN DATES SINCE RELEASE OF YELLOW & GREEN INCLUDES STOPS AT BONNAROO AND CHAOS IN TEJAS

Apr. 1, 2013, Philadelphia — Baroness’s first North American tour supporting their critically-acclaimed album, Yellow & Green, kicks off May 24 with a performance at Union Transfer in John Baizley’s adopted hometown of Philadelphia.”It’s hard to find the words to express how excited we are to announce this tour,” explained guitar player Pete Adams. “Seven months ago, who knew when it would be or even if we could get back on the road.  But here we are, picking right back up where we left off.  A heartfelt thanks to everyone’s unconditional love and support for us through, let’s hope, the hardest time this band will ever see.  We told you we’d be back so let’s do this thing!”Baizley confirmed that drummer Allen Blickle and bass player Matt Maggioni would not be touring with the band via a web posting on Mar. 25 (http://baronessmusic.com/update-3/), adding that the pair’s departure is “not sensational” and “do[es] not come with hard feelings.”  Baizley went on to add that the band has already found two musicians, Nick Jost (bass) and Sebastian Thomson (drums),  “who can approach our music with passion and vitality.

Baroness was sidelined when their tour bus plunged off a viaduct in the Bath area of England on Aug. 15, leaving the band and crew members with a variety of serious injuries. Yellow & Green had been released less than a month when the accident happened, and with just four shows remaining in the six-week trek before the band could return home to enjoy the praise that was being heaped upon the double-album.  Singer/guitar player Baizley suffered extensive injuries, which, at one point, clouded the future of both the band and his return to music.

_______________________________

In October, after an unprecedented outpouring from fans, peers and friends, Baizley posted an open letter in which he painfully recounted the horrific crash (http://baronessmusic.com/update-from-baroness/), ending the ten-paragraph note with a fierce determination to return to music and touring. By December, a clip of Baizley and Adams performing an acoustic rendition of “Stretchmarker” was posted on the Baroness website (http://baronessmusic.com/a-message-from-john-stretchmark-video/) with a brief note that started with “Simply put: it’s time to get back to it.”

With that, Baroness’s return to touring was not a matter of if but when. Adams and Baizley made their first public appearance with a performance in late January at Decibel Magazine’s 100th issue celebration in Philadelphia. Earlier this month, Baizley ventured to SXSW for a solo performance at Invisible Oranges/Brooklyn Vegan’s showcase as well as pair of art exhibits (Baizley’s art can be viewed at www.aperfectmonster.com).

Metal Odyssey To Change Music Coverage Format: Please Welcome “Pop Odyssey”

Official Metal Odyssey Press Release:

It’s been a wild and crazy ride these past four years at Metal Odyssey. With coverage and promotion of many Metal genres, along with Hard Rock, Classic Rock, Punk Rock and Alternative Rock in the mix, the Rockin’ journey has been more than memorable for me. I only hope the following news does not hurt the relationships I’ve built with so many Metal bands and Metal Buddies worldwide. I thank you all from the bottom of my (still) Metal lovin’ heart.

Now it’s time for a change. It’s not that I’ve grown tired of Metal. I live for Metal. I breathe Metal. This changeover is all about my wanting to break into the mainstream and be accepted for a change by “the big guys of the Pop Music world” like Rolling Stone magazine and the only way to do so is to cover and promote: Pop Music. I certainly hope and pray that ALL the loyal followers to Metal Odyssey and ALL my Metal brethren will understand and support what is happening here. Metal Odyssey is now… Pop Odyssey.

My dream has and always will be to one day cover the Grammy Awards at the red carpet, as the mainstream chart-toppers get out of their limousines for an evening of justified awards and champagne on ice. I need to experience this and “Metal Odyssey” will not take me there.

Believe me, this has all taken many weeks of soul searching. Change is a good thing. Without this change, life would become boring for me as a writer and lover of music. And…

HAVOK – Premiere New Video As They Continue Work On New Album

Denver Thrashers HAVOK have premiered their latest video for the song “From The Cradle To The Grave” from their 2012 EP, The Point Of No Return, via the band’s official Facebook page. The video, directed by Roy Warner, was filmed on location in Detroit during the band’s final tour of 2012 alongside Skeletonwitch. The premiere coincides with the band’s continued work on their anticipated Terry Date produced third full-length album.

Check out From The Cradle To The Grave below!

Discussing the song’s lyrical inspiration, vocalist/guitarist Dave Sanchez says, “‘From The Cradle To The Grave’ is about America’s first serial killer, H.H. Holmes. In the late 1800s, in Chicago, Holmes built a hotel specifically with murder in mind. It included doors that opened up to brick walls, staircases that lead to nowhere, and one-way rooms that once you entered, you never came out. He was a religious man and firmly believed that since he was born, the Devil was at his side. That being said, bang your head.”

HAVOK will hit the road next week, teaming with Goatwhore and The Casualties. The dates will feature new bassist Michael Joseph Leon. Sanchez notes, “as many people have already heard, we recently parted ways with bassist Jesse De Los Santos. It was a mutual split and we wish Jesse all the best. I’d like to thank Jesse for the four years of killing it in studio and on stage. With that being said, we’d like to introduce our new four-string monster, Mike Leon. Mike is a fantastic bassist and a veteran of the road from his years of touring with The Absence. We are very happy to have him on board.”

Leon comments: “I’m completely honored to be a part of such a well-oiled machine and to have the opportunity to play with these dudes is a dream come true! Not only is HAVOK one of my favorite new heavy metal bands out in the scene, but the guys in the band are a few of the best dudes I know! You can definitely look forward to us kickin’ lots of ass together this year, and for many years to come.”

HAVOK expect to complete all work on their new record in the coming weeks. Album information and special pre-order details will be announced shortly.

TOXIC HOLOCAUST – Releases Lyric Video For “Agony Of The Damned”; New Anthology Album Details

From The Ashes Of Nuclear Destruction Collection To Drop Next Month

__________________________________

Portland’s favorite Punk/Metal delinquents TOXIC HOLOCAUST recently unleashed a new lyric video for Agony of the Damned. Initially featured on the band’s 2011 Conjure and Command full-length, Agony Of The Damned makes an “updated” appearance on the From The Ashes Of Nuclear Destruction compilation, set for release via Relapse Records next month.

Elaborates band mastermind Joel Grind: “This version of ‘Agony of the Damned’ was recorded in September of 2010 with a drum machine a few months before we stepped into the studio to record the one that appears on Conjure and Command. When making an album, I usually demo out the entire thing before I step into a studio. This keeps costs low and gives me time to sit with it to iron out the details. Since Conjure and Command was the first TOXIC record to feature a full band, this demo served the purpose of familiarizing everyone with the new material and is previously unreleased.”

Lay your peepers on the video at THIS LOCATION.

From The Ashes Of Nuclear Destruction is a gargantuan 22-track anthology that compiles over a decade’s worth of TOXIC HOLOCAUST rarities into one raging compilation of antagonistic bliss. Amassing the band’s many contributions to various comps and vinyl-only splits with the likes of Municipal Waste, Midnight and others, alongside demo versions of treasured TOXIC classics, From The Ashes Of Nuclear Destruction is a historic romp through the history of one of today’s most revered, gritty, old-school metal bands.

Toxic Holocaust - From The Ashes - promo banner - 2013

From The Ashes Of Nuclear Destruction will see release through Relapse Records on April 2nd in North America, March 29th in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Finland and Benelux and April 1st in the UK. Additionally, you can check out the From The Ashes Of Nuclear Destruction teaser video and ordering info HERE.

TOXIC HOLOCAUST is currently in the studio working on the as-yet-untitled follow-up to their 2011 Conjure And Command full-length. Praised for its “nuclear reactive riffage and Repo Man punk attitude,” by Revolver and commended for its “tar-thick riffage, staggering breakdowns, and a corroded dose of self-loathing,” by The Onion’s A.V. Club,Conjure And Command continues to reap hails from fans and critics globally. As an added bonus, the band closed the year with the honor of having the song “Bitch” rear its sonic apocalyptic menace in an episode of high-rated FX drama series Sons Of Anarchy (season 5; episode 11).

TOXIC HOLOCAUST mutated into existence in 1999, when Joel Grind merged his love for classic punk and metal into his ideal band. Like his influences – Bathory, Venom, English Dogs, Possessed, Broken Bones – TOXIC HOLOCAUST offers up blazing riffs, gravel-throated vocals, and a deadly fixation on the evil in man and a post-apocalyptic world wrapped in a DIY attitude.

Celebrating ten years of clear-cut maliciousness through Greek mythology and unchecked riff savagery in 2013, Chicago trio LAIR OF THE MINOTAUR will storm back with a new EP this Spring.

While the members of LAIR OF THE MINOTAUR have been skulking around in the back-alleys of the underground over recent months, the band has been far from dormant. To commemorate a full decade of demolishing eardrums on record and on stage this year, the band will hammer their fanbase with a brand new EP for this year’s Record Store Day.

Entitled Godslayer, the new 7” release bears two new tracks, with the surge of Godslayer opening up, and the monolithic The Black Heart of the Stygian Drakonas on the B-side, both tracks mastered by Scott Hull (Pig Destroyer). A limited edition of 300 copies will be pressed as a 7”, in addition to the digital download through iTunes, Amazon MP3 and the like, and as with their latest album Evil Power will be released on their own The Grind-House Records with distribution from previous label home, Southern Lord, for Record Store Day this April 20th.

Lair Of The Minotaur - Godslayer EP - Promo Cover - 2013

Check out the Godslayer cover art designed by visual artist Tom Denney, an artist for LOTM’s Carnage EP, Ultimate Destroyer LP and s/t demo covers, and known for works for Kylesa, Sourvein, Soilent Green, Saint Vitus, Yakuza, Black Cobra, Rwake, Samothrace, Weedeater among others and other LAIR action RIGHT HERE.

In conjunction with Godslayer’s release, LAIR OF THE MINOTAUR will storm stages once again in April, starting with a free hometown Record Store Day show at Reckless Records in Chicago’s Wicker Park.

King Lizard - A Nightmare Livin' The Dream! - promo cover pic

I think it’s been quite awhile since I wrote down Some Metal and Rock ‘N Roll Thoughts on Metal Odyssey. I write plenty of them down on twitter, of course! The last time this column (theme) was posted, I believe was November 4th, 2012. Whoa! Since then my family and I have relocated to Ohio via Pennsylvania and I’ve been busier than a taxi on Broadway during Christmas; when it comes to starting over in a new state.

Within the last year or so, my love for Metal has grown ever stronger. It’s probably cause I’ve leaned on so many bands and musicians to fill my senses with their sounds, energy and vocals; just to get me through the CRAZINESS of relocating. Exhilarating. That’s what METAL is for me. I’m sure y’all know what I’m talking about too, when I equate the word exhilarating to Metal.

I’m really, really, really, really, really excited and cannot wait for the new album Axe To Grind to be released from this True Metal band, with origins from Denmark and featuring Kev Moore on vocals:

Witch Cross - Group Promo Pic - Logo - 2013 - #1

The album artwork on numerous 2013 releases that I’ve been seeing and enjoying lately is phenomenal! Suffocation’s Pinnacle Of Bedlam, Six Feet Under’s Unborn, Adrenaline Mob’s Coverta and Helloween’s Straight Out Of Hell are just a few that have my eyes popping with Metal glee! What new album artwork has you applauding lately? Share one or several and spread the Metal word here!

HELLOWEEN – Straight Out Of Hell (The End Records)

A couple of weeks ago (on or about) I stumbled upon seeing the new premium beer that’s coming out from the ultra legendary IRON MAIDEN. Created by IRON MAIDEN, brewed by Robinsons is: TROOPER – A Hand Crafted Ale. Kev Moore has told me that Witch Cross will have their very own brew coming out, to coincide in celebration of their new album release this Spring! Whoa!

Iron Maiden - brew - promo banner - 2013

Back in November of 2012, A Nightmare Livin’ The Dream! was released by London’s very own… KING LIZARD. This KING LIZARD band has something very cool happening with their Heavy Rock ‘N’ Roll and I’m more than happy to tell y’all about ’em.

This hell-bent-for-leather and Heavy Rockin’ band has an official trailer out called: KING LIZARD A Nightmare Makin’ The Dream that you can listen to and watch below! Whoa! Yes, that’s their album cover at the top of this post too. Metal be thy name.

SATAN – Releases New Track From Forthcoming Album “Life Sentence”

Satan - Group Promo Pic - 2013 - #1

Legendary British band SATAN have released a brand new track off their forthcoming new album Life Sentence. The song, Siege Mentality, is now streaming! Check it out below!

Life Sentence, SATAN’s first full-length since 1987’s Suspended Sentence, will be available in North America on May 21st via Listenable Records. The album will mark the 30th anniversary of the band’s highly acclaimed 1983 debut Court In The Act. Life Sentence will also feature the same line-up that appeared on that now-classic piece of metal history.

The cover art for the album (pictured below) was drawn by famed artist Eliran Kantor (SODOM, TESTAMENT, HATEBREED – http://www.elirankantor.com) and depicts a similar graphic concept as Court In The Act. Mixed by Dario Mollo at Damage Inc. Studio in Italy and tracked late last year at First Avenue in Newcastle, Life Sentence is a very strong uptempo heavy metal album that will undoubtedly become a metal classic.

Pre-orders are available at http://shop.listenable.net.

Satan - Life Sentence - promo cover pic - 2013

“The 80s NWOBHM legends return with an absolute beast of a comeback” – Metal Hammer

“With the original lineup all in place, Satan’s high-flying, expertly phrased melody lines and riffing have returned as if reappearing, modified DeLorean-style, from the past.” – Worm Gear Zine

SATAN are a Heavy Metal band originating from Newcastle, England in 1980, known as part of the New Wave Of British Heavy Metal movement. Though generally obscure throughout their career, the band is considered influential for playing a form of proto-thrash metal that was fairly advanced by the standards of the early 1980s. SATAN remained inactive until re-assembling for a one-off gig at Germany’s Wacken Open Air in 2004, and finally reunited in their original Court In The Act line-up for 2011’s Keep It True festival. The band performed at several european festivals in 2011 and 2012 and have announced more festival shows and new album for 2013, to mark the 30th anniversary of their debut release.

Mar. 25, 2013, Philadelphia – Kylesa premiere Quicksand, a new song from their forthcoming album Ultraviolet (May 28, Season of Mist), via Spin (http://www.spin.com/articles/kylesa-quicksand-ultraviolet-stream).

Quicksand is a quick 2:35 of ghostly dreamdoom that joins the melodies of ’90s shoegaze with the churn of modern sludge and a riff straight from the Billy Corgan playbook,” says Spin in a brief write-up accompanying the song stream, adding that the song is “a muscular swirl that should please anyone who thought m b v didn’t have enough shouting.”

The band has also unveiled the cover art for Ultraviolet, which was done by Sean Beaudry. Beaudry, a fellow Savannah resident, did the artwork for the band’s Time Will Fuse Its Worth reissue. Pre-order bundles for the new album are available now via (http://e-shop.season-of-mist.com/en/predefined-search/37879).

Kylesa will play a free, all ages show in their hometown of Savannah at The Dollhouse on Apr. 19 as a way to thank fans for their ongoing support.

Pitchfork, in the band’s first interview regarding Ultraviolet (http://pitchfork.com/features/show-no-mercy/9084-kylesa/), said of the album: “It’s the… heavy rock band’s darkest, most atmospheric record to date.  The collection, which features an array of subtle electronic elements, makes for an expressive, immersive listen that will likely find the double-drumming quintet a larger audience.”

Unspoken,” also from Ultraviolet, was released online in late February, leading Stereogum to say “… if the album’s first single is any indication, they’ve continued moving away from their peers as well as their own past, conquering new territory,” adding “it’s a total triumph.”  The song can be streamed here:  https://soundcloud.com/season-of-mist/kylesa-unspoken.

GRIM REAPER “Fear No Evil” – 1985 Album Is Stone’s METAL Pick Of The Day!

Posted in Heavy Metal, heavy metal news, Metal, metal music, Music, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , , on March 23, 2013 by Metal Odyssey

Grim Reaper - Fear No Evil - promo cover pic!

GRIM REAPER – Released back in 1985, on RCA Records, Fear No Evil (the second studio album) from the UK’s Grim Reaper is a Metal classic worth revisiting time and again. Grim Reaper is as legit a member of the NWOBHM as any of their peers; the only unfortunate drawback is our Metal community has just 3 studio albums to savor from them.

Nonetheless, Fear No Evil may very well be the best of the lot from Grim Reaper. With a no-nonsense approach to production, all the unnecessary bells and whistles are not present on this album; making it for an Old School Metal gem from a decade that produced unparalleled and gilt-edged Metal history.

Fear No Evil plays along so grand, I’d swear this album should be on (at least) my “Top 100 Metal Albums Of All-Time” list. That’s if I actually took the time to write-up such a head-scratching list! Maybe someday I shall embark on such a Metal venture. Whoa.

Grim Reaper - Classic Band Logo - B&W

Grim Reaper (for those of you unfamiliar) is a band that would fit right in at a Metal festival with Witch Cross, Satan, Angel Witch, Raven, Crystal Viper, Venom… you must get the Metal point by now! This is a band that didn’t get much airplay in my neck of the woods as a teen, back in those glorious Metal 80’s; save for the title track from their 1984 debut album: See You In Hell. Regardless, after that said debut album, I had already anointed Grim Reaper as Metal legends.

I can’t lie, not every song on Fear No Evil is killer, with Rock And Roll Tonight being the sore thumb. It’s not as if this is a terrible song, not at all, it just doesn’t seem to “fit in” with the total Metal package that Fear No Evil is all about. This is an album that screams spikes, keg parties for the seasoned pros, biker rallies and of course… denim and leather. Get this Metal classic, Fear No Evil, from Grim Reaper if you haven’t yet; you’ll be wishing this band made ten more albums just like this one. Metal be thy name.

New REVEL IN FLESH Tune Streaming At Death Metal Underground

Revel In Flesh - Manifested Darkness - promo cover pic

The good folks at DeathMetal.Org have taken a sledgehammer to the face of false metal by streaming a brand new track from the forthcoming album from REVEL IN FLESH. The song, entitled Dominate the Rotten, comes off the band’s forthcoming sophomore release, Manifested Darkness and is currently cracking skulls at http://deathmetal.org/.

Harnessing the momentum created by the album that Teeth of the Divine’s Erik Thomas called “the best of a recent impressive run of the style,” Manifested Darkness ups the ante and goes for the jugular. The album is sure to be considered one of 2013’s best classic Death Metal releases.

The CD and digital download will be unleashed on April 12th by FDA Rekotz and contains nine hammering new hymns of destruction plus one special bonus track exclusive to the CD version. The LP version will be out on April 26th and will include an additional bonus track. The artwork for Manifested Darkness was created by the Spanish artist Juanjo Castellano. The album was mixed and mastered at Unisound Studio by Dan Swanö.

Pre-orders are available at http://www.fda-rekotz.com.
