The winds of spring bring the stench of Sulphur, as German Death Metal tyrants, SULPHUR AEON, prepare for the devastating unfurling of their leviathan sophomore LP, Gateway To The Antisphere, through a cooperative release between Imperium Productions and Ván Records.

SULPHUR AEON‘s critically acclaimed demo tape, Sulphur Psalms, was released in August 2010, followed by the Deep Deep Down They Sleep 7″, released in May of 2012. The band’s debut album, Swallowed By The Ocean’s Tide, was released in December 2012 through Imperium Productions. The album received worldwide praise by fans and the media alike as being one of the very few innovative and pioneering Death Metal albums of recent years with its deathly mélange of ferocious riffs, ultra-precise drums and sepulchral incantatory chants, combined with a high level of musical competence and songwriting to the most haunting and wicked Death Metal.

Now it’s time for the ancient ones to rise once more from the restless diluvial depths of timeless death, as SULPHUR AEON delivers the rapture of their second album, Gateway To The Antisphere. The album was produced by Simon Werner who was already responsible for the sound of the previous recordings of the band, and the result is a catastrophic and instantly memorable work of extreme metal art. Fifty-two minutes of debilitating yet enthralling, black-tinged, Lovecraftian death, suck the listener in like an inescapable vortex, as visually depicted in the mind-blowing cover artwork (with the emphasis on “art”) was created by Ola Larsson.

STRIKEFORCE “Elegant Steel” – A Metal Odyssey Album Review

4.5 METAL Fists Out Of 5!

STRIKEFORCE are a Classic Hard Rock band that formed back in 1982. Lead by founding member and guitarist Duke Jackson, Strikeforce also features Jim Burdette on drums, Daryn Unterbrink on vocals, and bassist James Murphy. The newest studio album from Strikeforce, Elegant Steel, was released back on December 9th, 2014, via HighVolMusic. Duke Jackson is a native of Cincinnati, Ohio and serves as a founding member, writer and producer of Strikeforce.

This five song album (EP if you will) is jam-packed with many hooks and high energy Hard Rock songs, all guitar driven and I’ve been reeled in! This is an album that is tailor-made for good-times, whether you’re partying or hitting the open highway; these are songs that have succeeded in making me feel that Classic Hard Rock goodness!

My favorite song on this album is Let Me Rock U, a song that can stand head-to-toes with many (historically untouchable) Mötley Crüe songs and I’m not talking junk here at all. Live Action is a freaking refreshing way to dropkick any dumbass mood I might be in. Yeah, Strikeforce is a tried and true Hard Rock force, from their songwriting to their musicianship, with Duke Jackson shredding away in many eye-popping moments!

Daryn Unterbrink’s vocals are memorable and melodious; this guy can sing! The rhythm section does a bang-up job and everything just comes together so ideally, on Elegant Steel. This album from Strikeforce essentially comes at me like a bonus for 2014; sometimes special Rockin’ surprises do come in small packages! Metal be thy name! – Stone

5 METAL Albums I Can’t Live Without: The 90’s Edition, Part 1

Since we all love to revisit our favorite Metal albums from yesteryear, here are my Five Metal Albums I Cannot Live Without: The 90’s Edition, Part 1. This list is in no particular order and you can expect for me to include EP’s for this or future Metal discussions. If you cannot live without any of the following Metal albums as well, feel free to blab about it with a comment! Metal be thy name!

King Diamond – The Graveyard

King Diamond released 4 studio albums during the 90’s and The Graveyard is from 1996. Following his modus operandi, King Diamond’s The Graveyard is an evil concept album, one that never ceases to amaze and spook me, time after time.

My favorite song from this album is I Am; a King Diamond song that sends chills through each molecule of my body and it’s truly due to King Diamond’s jaw-dropping falsetto.

Queensrÿche – Empire

Queensrÿche’s fourth studio album, Empire, was released back in 1990. What a whiz-bang way to start off the 90’s decade for Queensrÿche! I still have my cassette version of Empire and yes I did upgrade it to CD. Jet City Woman is my favorite song from this album; it makes my face all flush and psyche-out shit like that. Whoa!

OVERKILL – Horrorscope

From 1991, Horrorscope is the fifth studio album released by The Garden State’s OVERKILL. I Metal worship this OVERKILL album!! Coma, the title track and OVERKILL’s cover version of the great Edgar Winter’s instrumental, Frankenstein, are 3 songs of pure Thrash Metal bliss! OVERKILL – I Hear Black

From 1993, I Hear Black is the sixth studio album released by New Jersey’s OVERKILL. This super-legendary Thrash Metal band stayed very busy during the 90’s, releasing 6 studio albums and a cover song album titled: Coverkill. Whoa, man!

I love this (and the above) OVERKILL album for it kept me solid company during the early 90’s; which was a very sad and trying time in my life. Yes, OVERKILL was there when I needed them most. I still have the cassettes of both titles and did not upgrade to CDs until around 2007.

The mighty W.A.S.P. released 4 studio albums during the 90’s! Hell, yeah they did and Blackie Lawless is a Metal Defender Of The Faith! Still Not Black Enough is the sixth studio album from W.A.S.P. and it was released back in 1995. Holy Metal shit, is this a tremendous W.A.S.P. album!

Blackie Lawless did not waste a micro note of space on this album, every song is an ass kicking that always makes me say (or think): thank you, Mr. Lawless and W.A.S.P., may I please have more sonic Metal beatings sirs?

My favorite song on this album is Rock and Roll To Death. Best Metal Buddy Scott Coverdale got me into W.A.S.P. in the 80’s and reintroduced me to W.A.S.P. in the Millennium Decade as well! ‘Nuff said. Enjoy the song below and Metal Be Thy Name!

Since we all love to revisit our favorite Metal albums from yesteryear, here are my Five Metal Albums I Cannot Live Without: The 80’s Edition, Part 1. This list is in no particular order and I do include EP’s for this Metal discussion. If you cannot live without any of the following Metal albums as well, feel free to blab about it with a comment. Metal be thy name!

Ozzy Osbourne – The Ultimate Sin

Released in 1986, this is the fourth studio album from the Godfather Of Heavy Metal. With Jake E. Lee on guitar and a powerful lineup of songs, The Ultimate Sin is an album that screams good-times 80’s for me. Never Know Why, Fool Like You and Shot In The Dark are my favorite three songs on this LP. Rest in peace, Randy Castillo.

METALLICA – Ride The Lightning

Before there was a Master Of Puppets, there was Ride The Lightning from 1984. I can remember holding this LP jacket in my hands and staring at both the front and back covers, wondering how a band could play such unbelievable Heavy Metal. It did not take me very long to realize what Thrash Metal was about, once I took ownership of this album. Rest in peace, Cliff Burton.

ANTHRAX – Armed And Dangerous

Released in 1985, this was the first EP from the great Anthrax. I bought it at a (now defunct) chain store named Strawberries Records & Tapes. I bought this EP without hearing a single song from it and it did not disappoint! The cover song of Sex Pistol’s God Save The Queen is whiz-bang, baby!

Queensrÿche – (self-titled)

Released back in 1983, this self-titled Queensrÿche EP is as necessary to my Metal world as bottled water is. I remember first hearing the song Queen Of The Reich on a syndicated FM radio show called: Metal Shop. When I heard this song, my life changed for the better, I swear it. My other favorite song from this EP is The Lady Wore Black and it’s a Metal gem!!

NUCLEAR ASSAULT – Handle With Care

From 1989, this was the third studio album from Nuclear Assault and I still have it on cassette! Metal be thy name! It rages from start to finish and now I am pumped-up to slap this cassette into my car stereo! With such songs as Critical Mass, Surgery and a load of others, this album is a keeper! Nuclear Assault are a Thrash Metal band that (without a doubt) helped shape their genre into the Metal force it is today. ‘Nuff said.

On This Day In METAL History – March 14th… From Janis Joplin To Metallica

On March 14th, 1971 – The hit single, Me and Bobby McGee, by Janis Joplin was at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 Singles Chart in the United States. This hit is featured on the 1971 album from Janis Joplin: Pearl. This song was written by Kris Kristofferson and Fred Foster and originally recorded by Roger Miller.

On this day in 1974 – The legendary Aerosmith performed at the New Haven Coliseum, in New Haven, Connecticut. Aerosmith were touring in support of their second studio album: Get Your Wings. Yes, this album features the memorable song: Same Old Song and Dance.

On March 14th, 1975 – The great Led Zeppelin performed at the Sports Arena in San Diego, California. Whoa!

On this day in 1980 – The sensational Def Leppard released their debut studio album: On Through The Night.

On March 14th, 1989 – Boston’s very own Extreme released their debut and self-titled studio album. Yes, this album features the song: Kid Ego.

On this day in 1992 – RUSH performed a concert at the New Haven Coliseum, in New Haven, Connecticut. RUSH had released their 14th studio album in September of 1991: Roll The Bones.

On March 14th, 2015 – Master Of Puppets from the super-mighty Metallica has returned to the Billboard Top 200 Albums Chart, sitting at #192! Whoa, man! This third studio album from Metallica was released back in March of 1986, peaking at #29 on this same chart. Master Of Puppets has spent 73 non-consecutive weeks on the Billboard Top 200. Without this Metallica album existing, life would super-duper and 100% suck to the maximum. Metal be thy name. – Stone

Doyle Bright Of Rigor Mortis And Hallows Eve Fame Launches New Band: S.O.G.

Doyle Bright of Rigor Mortis and Hallows Eve fame has launched a new band: S.O.G. aka Special Operations Group.

Special Operations Group has signed with Hallows Eve Media and are currently recording their debut album entitled “If It Bleeds” in Atlanta, Georgia, with a release set for mid Summer of 2015.

S.O.G. has signed on to perform at the Maxima Distorzion Metal Awards in Houston, Texas, on June 18th 2015, where Doyle Bright will be receiving the Texas Metal Legends Award as well.

‪CLAUSTROFOBIA – Announce Headline European Tour!

“Get ready for brutal metal with real feeling from the fucking third world! We are gonna put the mosh pit on fire so pay attention and join us!”

Heady advice from vocalist and guitarist Marcus D’Angelo on what Europe can expect when Brazilian Thrash heavyweights Claustrofobia come crashing into town on their headline Visceral European Tour.

The band announce a 29 date tour taking in eleven different countries over nearly two months on the road, and include appearances alongside the likes of Primordial and Fleshgod Apocalypse at Portugal’s SWR Festival [01/05/15]. More dates will be added in the coming weeks.

For now to give you a taste of what to expect on the tour, watch the band’s video for track ‘Bastardos do Brasil’ from most recent album release, Peste [2011/2014]:

Claustrofobia has been causing brutal Thrash mayhem in Brazil and beyond for the past twenty years and the band is looking forward to celebrating their anniversary with their European fans! Comments Marcus, “To play live is the real ambition of bands like us. We don’t like ‘internet bands’; we prefer to play face to face. We will play gigs almost everyday so we will spread our music around.”

The band has also released an exclusive DVD entitled Visceral 20 Years showcasing Claustrofobia’s journey to the well-oiled Thrash machine that it is today.

And it’s not just about the celebration of the past twenty years, it’s about looking to the future too as the band is only recently out of the recording studio with none other than producer Russ Russell [Napalm Death, The Exploited, Evile] at the helm.

“We are very excited with the results!”, states Marcus. “It is gonna be a great album with a futurist vibe and it will hopefully open up our own sound in a new way.’ The untitled album, which as of yet does not have any label attachment, can be expected nearer the end of 2015.

On This Day In METAL History – March 13th… Horror Movie Special Edition!

On March 13th, 1981 – The Fun House was released to wide-screen theaters, via Universal. The legendary Tobe Hooper was the director for this horror film and Lawrence Block was the writer. I remember watching this movie quite a few times on HBO, back in the day, during an era when the R rated movies were only shown after ten o’clock at night. This creepy film shows why you should not stay overnight at a traveling carnival. Whoa!

On March 13th, 1992 – Highway To Hell was released to wide-screen theaters, via Hemdale. A young American couple are warned not to sleep after the second tree on a certain back road, while traveling to Las Vegas to get married. After fueling up their car and falling asleep, (the girlfriend) Rachel gets arrested by a Hellcop and (the boyfriend) Charlie now has to go to hell to rescue his fiancé.

I love the AC/DC title to this movie and its subtitle Where The Toll Is You Soul is classic! This film was directed by Ate de Jong.

On March 13th, 2009 – The super scary thriller, The Last House On The Left, was released to wide-screen theaters, via Rogue Pictures. The iconic Wes Craven directed and produced the original version of this movie, back in 1972. Wes Craven returned to produce this remake with Sean Cunningham. This film took in over 45 million (U.S. dollars) at the box office. I suppose if a house looks creepy enough, don’t go near it. ‘Nuff said.

On March 13th, 2015 – It Follows is released to wide-screen theaters. Written and directed by David Robert Mitchell, this horror film centers around a 19-year-old girl named Jay and the terrifying situation she finds herself in, after a sexual encounter with another teenage boy. Apparently a supernatural force follows her every step since her sexual encounter and this same evil force can be passed along to another person, via a sexual situation. This movie is obviously pretty darn sexual? Metal be thy name, I’m confused.

Titled Crypt Of The Devil, the ten track slab of audio violence was composed by vocalist Chris Barnes and Cannabis Corpse bassist/vocalist Phil “Landphil” Hall. While on tour with Cannabis Corpse in 2013, Barnes and Hall met and kept in touch. Barnes would later lend his vocals to a track on Cannabis Corpse’s From Wisdom To Baked. That same year, Hall and Barnes joined forces to pen brand new SIX FEET UNDER tracks.

RUSH “2112” – Has Been Newly Remastered On 200-Gram, Heavyweight Vinyl

RUSH’s 2112 has been newly remastered on 200-gram, heavyweight vinyl at legendary Abbey Road Studios using the Direct to Metal Mastering (DMM) audiophile copper plating process, all from original analogue masters. The band’s fourth album, 2112, first released in 1976, proved a breakthrough, highlighted by its seven-part title suite – written by Lee and Lifeson, with lyrics by Peart – recounting a dystopian story set in the year 2112. It came in at #2 on Rolling Stone’s list of ‘Your Favorite Prog Rock Albums of All Time.’ Most Rush fans consider it the band’s definitive recording and it has sold over 3 million albums in the U.S.

This unique reissue showcases a custom, limited-edition, hand-etched hologram of the ‘Red Star of the Federation’ pressed in the album’s dead wax runout of side two. To reveal the spinning hologram, fans can use any focused source of light, such as the LED flashlight on a smartphone, directly above the turntable while playing.

On This Day In METAL History – March 12th… From David Lee Roth To Darryl Strawberry

1988 – The charismatic David Lee Roth has his hit single, Just Like Paradise, sitting at #6, on the Billboard Hot 100 Singles Chart. KISS MTV UNPLUGGED RELEASED

On March 12, 1996, the KISS MTV Unplugged CD and VHS Video were released in the US. KISS MTV Unplugged was recorded August 9, 1995 at Sony Music Studios in New York City. The majority of the CD/VHS features Paul, Gene, Eric Singer and Bruce Kulick. Ace Frehley and Peter Criss join Paul and Gene for ‘2000 Man’ and ‘Beth’. All six members close out the CD/VHS with ‘Nothin’ To Lose’ and ‘Rock and Roll All Nite’. MTV originally broadcast KISS Unplugged on October 31, 1995.

On This Day In METAL History – March 11th… And Happy METAL Birthday To Vinnie Paul!

On March 11th, 1972 – The iconic Black Sabbath had their timeless song, Iron Man, sitting at #52 on the Billboard Hot 100 Singles Chart. This song is featured on their whiz-bang studio album from 1970: Paranoid. Whoa!

On this day in 1975 – The fabulous Led Zeppelin performed at the Long Beach Arena in Long Beach, California, USA. Ticket prices were $6.50, $7.50 or $8.50, depending on the seating area. Whoa!! There was also a meager 50 cent service charge per ticket order. Unreal!

On March 11th, 1978 – The debut and self-titled album from the incredible Van Halen was invading the Billboard Top 200 Albums Chart. This glorious album eventually earned Diamond Status by the RIAA, selling 10 million (plus) units in the United States. Metal be thy name!

On this day in 1983 – The third studio album, Metal Health, from the amazing QUIET RIOT was released. This outstanding album is considered the first Heavy Metal album to reach #1 on the Billboard Top 200 Albums Chart. To this very Metal minute, Metal Health (Bang Your Head) is my favorite Heavy Metal anthem of all-time. Over thirty years later, this song continues to make me psyched-out beyond belief. Rest in peace, Kevin DuBrow.

On March 11th, 1989 – The rabid Guns N’ Roses hit single, Paradise City, was resting at #5 on the Billboard Hot 100 Singles Chart. Paradise City is featured on the legendary debut GNR studio album, from 1987: Appetite For Destruction. This song was a strip club sensation; I’m just guessing for I never recall going to those places back in the day. Um, yeah.

On this day in 2015 – The reissue of Led Zeppelin’s marvelous studio album, Physical Graffiti, returned to the Billboard Top 200 Albums Chart and is impressively resting at #11. Whoa!! Originally released back in 1975, this album reached #1 on this chart and that was many Metal moons ago. This proves that Led Zeppelin are forever relevant and this album’s place in Rock history is immeasurable.

On March 11th, 2015 – Journey’s Greatest Hits has climbed up to #67 on the Billboard Top 200 Albums Chart. This compilation album from Journey has peaked at #10, while spending a prodigious 345 weeks on this chart!! Long live Journey!

Brooklyn stoner rock/doom unit KINGS DESTROY will unleash a brand new studio offering on May 5th. The self-titled monster and follow-up to last year’s critically-lauded A Time Of Hunting full-length was produced and mixed by Sanford Parker (Twilight, Voivod, Eyehategod, Yob etc.) at Studio G in Brooklyn, mastered by Collin Jordan (Eyehategod, Indian, Wovenhand, Voivod etc.) at The Boiler Room in Chicago and delivers seven, lead-footed doom rock hymns.

With their third album in four years, KINGS DESTROY leave their hardcore-born stamp on noise rock and doom. After sharing stages with Pentagram, Winter, Saint Vitus, Church of Misery, Yob, Pallbearer, Vista Chino, Orange Goblin, Trouble, Acid King, Corrosion Of Conformity and so many others, the five-piece stand tall with their defining statement.

Championed Yob guitarist/vocalist Mike Scheidt: “It’s a great album. Heavy, yes. Doom? Yes, with a dose of the best of the ’90s. I’m a fan of the ’90s,” he further elaborates, “so that is meant as a compliment. But what is best about KINGS DESTROY is that they write good songs. Helmet meets early Queens Of The Stone Age meets Kyuss/Unida, roughly. [Steve] Murphy’s vocals are strong and really steps up what is already killer. Great production, tones, performances.”

KINGS DESTROY is the name of an infamous graffiti gang from the Bronx circa late ’70s/early ’80s. The band members met in this vicinity and were heavily involved in the New York Hardcore scene of the late ’80s that merged hardcore music, metal, graffiti and hip hop. The band unites musicians from many of the genres’ most prolific bands.

Hailing from the Greenpoint section of Brooklyn, KINGS DESTROY features guitarists Carl Porcaro and Chris Skowronski from legendary, 100K album selling Killing Time, vocalist Steve Murphy from Uppercut, drummer Rob Sefcik formerly of The Begotten, Uppercut, Fur and Electric Frankenstein and bassist Aaron Bumpus. LOS ANGELES, March 9, 2015 – Nekrogoblikon, the Los Angeles-based band who describe their music as “goblin metal” and became internet sensations with their day-in the-life-of-a-goblin video for “No One Survives,” return with new album, Heavy Meta on June 2. A new song from the album, Full Body Xplosion, can be heard below:

“A thousand years ago, we began writing an album,” explained Nekrogoblikon singer, Scorpion. “Then we spent 998.5 years dicking around in the cave networks of rural Kentucky. After we were all spelunked out we decided we might as well finish the album. The album is Heavy Meta.”

The 10-song album arrives via the multimedia outfit’s new label, Mystery Box, which is distributed by Razor & Tie. Mystery Box will serve not only as the band’s label but also as a freestanding production company headquartered in downtown Los Angeles.

AKASAVA – Unveil New EP Details, Stream Live Video

French occult rockers Akasava have a wealth of information to spread about their exciting upcoming EP Strange Aeons. The band hit the studio last week to begin the recording procedure, and according to frontman Louis Hauguel, “that was one epic day, we’ve recorded everything except for the vocals! It’s going to be heavy & fuzzy from the raw cuts I’ve listened to!”
