ENTHRALL “Throes Of Fire” – Sophomore Album Showcases The Metal Strengths Of Vocalist/Multi-Instrumentalist Neil Rego

Posted in classic metal, Heavy Metal, heavy metal albums, heavy metal news, metal music, Music, Power Metal, progressive metal, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , , , on April 9, 2012 by Metal Odyssey

ENTHRALL – Originating from Bangalore, India and eventually being signed by Greece independent label METALFIGHTERS, founding member and multi-instrumentalist/vocalist Neil Rego has his solo project ENTHRALL causing quite the buzz within the worldwide Metal underground. The roots of ENTHRALL go back to 1995, when ENTHRALL was initially a unified band. Family commitments and the inability to relocate are the legitimate reasons as to why the remaining original members of ENTHRALL had to step aside.

With guest musicians appearing on his latest (second overall) ENTHRALL album, Neil Rego has given every indication that he is a well-rounded songwriter and lyricist, coupled with his undeniable and admirable proficiency as a vocalist and multi-instrumentalist. No Metal rock should be left unturned and ENTHRALL is one solid Metal rock worth discovering.

The influences of Classic Metal, Classic Rock, Progressive Rock/Metal and old school Speed Metal are all interwoven into a unique texture of sound on Throes Of Fire, courtesy of Neil’s musical vision. Neil’s clean vocals are married with his brand of Metal in such a smooth way that I cannot help myself liking what I hear, throughout Throes Of Fire. If I had to choose my favorite song, the title track keeps replaying in my mind.

Melodic from beginning to end and most essentially memorable is Throes Of Fire. With no flashy gimmicks of an over-produced product, Neil Rego has compiled these ten songs on this album to sound effectively efficient, in an early 80’s Classic Metal sort of way. Throes Of Fire has grown on me and has left an imprint of uniqueness upon my ears that is so ultimately important.

As a sophomore release from ENTHRALL, Neil Rego has shown that he can act upon his Metal vision and create an album that dominates on the melodic side of the spectrum, while knowing when to let loose the hard and heavy without crossing that fine line of filler territory. I recommend checking out ENTHRALL to any fan of Heavy Metal or even Hard Rock. There is a vast bounty of Metalheads out there, that should find Throes Of Fire to be an album worthy of their time. It’s been worth my Metal time. Metal be thy name.

TOAD – Arizona Metallers Issue Tour Recap; Band Prepares Forthcoming EP

Posted in Heavy Metal, heavy metal news, metal music, Music, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , on April 8, 2012 by Metal Odyssey

Arizona Metal militia TOAD has returned to its homeland of Phoenix, after a two-week migration through the Rocky Mountains and across the southern United States. To say TOAD‘s journey was a success would be an understatement. Old friends were revisited, new allies were formed, and TOAD‘s rotten gospel was delivered on a nightly basis to receptive congregations.

Upon their return to the desert, TOAD immediately delved back into the writing process in preparation for the next album. TOAD‘s new music is an expansion and improvement upon the themes prevalent in last year’s Rotten Tide, which continues to reap critical acclaim from critics and fans alike. These latest songs are the results of a more mature, driven, and aggressive band. Once the record is finished, TOAD plans on continuing its Eastern expansion to the Atlantic coast, and beyond. Take Over And Destroy.

In the meantime, check out live footage from the band’s stop in Fayetteville, Arkansas last month at THIS LOCATION.

A maniacal six-piece, TOAD formed in 2008 and has rapidly evolved into a complex entity. TOAD‘s sound is hardly definable but rather a divine amalgamation of and elaboration upon all things heavy within the last four decades of rock music. Though obviously influenced by the Scandinavian Death and Black Metal movements of the 1990s, the band ensures that every song pulsates with the groove established by Metal’s forefathers – bands like Black Sabbath and Judas Priest.

With the addition of former Slut Sister and Drone Throne guitarist Alex Bank Rollins, and the replacement of original guitarist Danny Labarbera by former Queen Beast member Nate Garrett, the band has solidified a group that is road-ready and unstoppable in both its creative output and self-promotion. Rounding out the lineup are original members Andy Leemont on vocals, Shane Taylor on drums, Trey Edwin on bass, and Pete Porter on organ. TOAD strive to be at the forefront of the progression of the genre.

CIRITH UNGOL “Servants Of Chaos” – 3 Disc Set Is A Mammoth Metal Value

Posted in classic metal, Heavy Metal, heavy metal albums, heavy metal news, metal music, Music, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , , on April 8, 2012 by Metal Odyssey

CIRITH UNGOL – The 2-CD/Bonus DVD of vintage CIRITH UNGOL, Servants Of Chaos, was released back on January 31st, 2012, via Metal Blade Records in North America. Servants Of Chaos was originally released (exclusively) in Europe, back in 2001. What an amazing package, which salutes this never to be forgotten Metal band from Ventura, California.

CIRITH UNGOL can easily be classified  as a pioneering and influential Metal band from the early 80’s. I highly recommend, to all Metalheads worldwide, these rare and live tracks, along with video footage of CIRITH UNGOL, to sink your Classic Metal craving senses into! Adding this Cirith Ungol 3 disc set to your Metal collection will serve you right.

I just bought Servants Of Chaos recently and it’s worth every penny. f.y.e. was selling it at a sale price for $9.99 (U.S.). That’s a stupendous price for 2 CD’s and 1 DVD!

The name Cirith Ungol is pronounced “kirith ungol” and is an Elvish phrase meaning “pass of the spider.”

Check out below: Cirith Ungol “I’m Alive” (Live) from the album “Servants of Chaos”. Recorded live at Wolf and Rissmiller’s Country Club on November 9th, 1984. Whoa and Metal be thy name.

SAVATAGE ‘Hall Of The Mountain King’ – Stone’s Metal Pick Of The Day

Posted in classic rock, Heavy Metal, heavy metal albums, heavy metal news, metal music, Music, progressive metal, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , , , , on April 6, 2012 by Metal Odyssey

SAVATAGE – I once owned Hall Of The Mountain King on vinyl. Years later, the vinyl is gone and I have it on CD. Yes, I prefer the vinyl. That’s besides the Metal point though, for Hall Of The Mountain King is such a classic of Metal classics, listening to it on a hissing cassette would still likely be okay by me.

When this album was released back in 1987, I was introduced to the title track first on MTV’s Headbangers Ball. The music video for this song was pretty cool, epic and entertaining, not the run-of-the-mill Heavy Metal video of the time. I found the title track to be undeniably progressive, compared to the Metal that Savatage was known for. This title track grew on me quickly and I ran out and bought the album… I was psyched.

From the artwork of Gary Smith to ALL ten songs, Hall Of The Mountain King had me hooked. I’ll say it again: a classic of classics. I’ll go as far by stating this album is a “top ten favorite of mine for all time” too. The more I listen to Hall Of The Mountain King, the more I love it. Picking a favorite song on this album is not easy for me. Strange Wings and The Price You Pay are two that get “repeat play” more often by me though.

Check out the classic – Hall Of The Mountain King music video below! Whoa!

The vocals of Jon Oliva on these songs are stuff of Metal legend. This amazing vocalist/musician never had to croon, continuously hit eye-popping high notes or try to sound like anyone else to be etched in my Metal senses so solidly. This is Jon Oliva and I swear he is one of the most underrated vocalists of all time, spanning any Rock or Metal genre. Speaking of the band itself: world-class musicians. Period.

The production of Paul O’Neill is superb and he brought in his vision for a future Savatage, one that none of us would have ever expected in our wildest Metal dreams. I remember the first time I listened to Prelude To Madness and I was awestruck. I thought, what is Savatage doing? This is Electric Light Orchestra gone Heavy Metal! It only made me more psyched out of my Metal mind, in part by being a huge fan of Electric Light Orchestra.

The overall sound, feel and vibe of Hall Of The Mountain King could never be duplicated, in my Metal opinion. If I had to recommend a Savatage album to someone unfamiliar with this band’s legacy, Hall Of The Mountain King would be it. My “Metal Pick Of The Day” or any day for that matter. Metal be thy name.

Following the release of their Hereditas 10″ late last summer, Brazilian Grindcore faction DESALMADO took Europe by storm on a brutal D.I.Y.-style November/December tour. The three-week venture saw the crew taking their crushing South American-style hate-fueled attack through Portugal, Spain, Belgium, Holland, France, Germany, and more, all compiled in a killer new video “documentary.” See the quintet’s beer-swilling, prank-filled, mosh-powered trip through the continent RIGHT HERE.

DESALMADO have also recently completed their sophomore LP, which is now undergoing final preparations for its release early this Summer. The album was produced by Jean Dolabella of Sepultura and mastered by Jamal Ruhe at West West Side. A confirmed release date and full album info will be announced in the weeks ahead. For now ravenous fans can devour DESALMADO‘s Hereditas 10″ which is still streaming in its entirety via HELLBOUND. The EP’s crushing vinyl version can purchased at the Greyhaze Records website.

Next week DESALMADO will share the stage with Impurity, Acheron and Death Metal gods Obituary in Belo Horizonte, Brazil, as part of Cogumelo Fest 2012, a one-off as the band formulate their next tour in support of the forthcoming album.

After the addition of Hansen to the group’s lineup in early 2011, UNISONIC continued the songwriting process for its debut release, incorporating Kai’s talent for writing great anthemic Rock songs into its existing material. Hardly Keeper Of The Seven Keys Part 3, the UNISONICcollective effortlessly fuse the many sides of heavy music they know and love. The band’s music is versatile and takes a broad approach to Heavy Rock without sacrificing the power and strong, catchy melodies that characterized the band members’ previous projects.

ENTOMBED ‘Monkey Puss (Live in London)’ – Stone’s Metal Pick Of The Day

Posted in Death Metal, death metal bands, Heavy Metal, heavy metal news, metal music, Music, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , , , on April 4, 2012 by Metal Odyssey

ENTOMBED – Just this morning, people have been stopping me on the street and asking me, “Stone, what’s your Metal pick of the day?” and my response has been: ENTOMBED. Monkey Puss (Live in London). That simple. I cannot stop listening to this CD lately, there’s something to be said for the way this legendary and influential band from Sweden comes across live. These guys kept it real in their performance and it comes across just so to my ears.

This classic ENTOMBED concert was recorded live at the London Astoria, March 18th, 1992, when ENTOMBED was on their Gods Of Grind Tour. This live CD has it all, my Metal brethren. Raw, no overdubbing, groove laden and fire-fueled with all the Death ‘N Roll that they are so famous for. I can sense both the band and the crowd were feeding off each other, with plenty of who gives a shit attitude… the way a live Metal show is supposed to be like.

My favorite song on here is Evilyn. It’s that Death ‘N Roll that get’s my Metal adrenaline all pumped up! Hell, this entire CD is a favorite of mine, especially when it comes to live recordings of Metal. You surely cannot go wrong by seeking this CD out and letting the live Metal vibes of ENTOMBED run through your veins. You absolutely cannot go wrong here.

This live album just sucks me right in and makes me feel damn good. I crank it up and let my senses digest the that underground live vibe of Metal that I’m hearing from ENTOMBED. No polish. No ballads. No billion dollar producer. This is live Metal from ENTOMBED. There is a live DVD of this concert out there as well, I’ve never owned it. I will own it one day. Metal be thy name.

Monkey Puss (Live in London) was released back in 1998 on Earache Records. ENTOMBED carried the torch valiantly for Metal in the 90’s (when Metal was supposedly beaten down) and they continue their Metal legacy to this day.

Monkey Puss (Live in London) – Track Listing:

Living Dead

Revel In Flesh

Strange Aeons

Crawl

But Life Goes On

Sinners Bleed

Evilyn

The Truth Beyond

Drowned

Left Hand Path

Posted in Heavy Metal, heavy metal albums, heavy metal news, metal music, Music, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , , on April 3, 2012 by Metal Odyssey

DARKTRIBE from France was originally founded by the Agnello brothers, Anthony (vocals) and Julien (drums), in 2009. Soon their long-time friends Bruno Caprani (bass) and Loïc Manuello (guitars) joined the band.

DARKTRIBE quickly showed their passion of sharing music by recording their first EP “Natural Defender” the same year.

After a period of shows and composing, DARKTRIBE wanted to go further by imposing their own style and entered the at ARTMUSIC Studio in Nice (France) to record their upcoming debut album with Sebb Camhi. Later the album was mixed and mastered at the famous Finnvox Studios in Finland by Mikko Karmila (Nightwish, Masterplan) and Mika Jussila (Sonata Arctica, Amorphis).

The album deals with the path of self-destruction to which the human civilization moves by ruining earth.

Powerful vocals, heavy guitars and progressive rhythms meet melodic and symphonic parts – that’s how you can describe DARKTRIBE’s sound.

DARKTRIBE’s debut “Mysticeti Victoria” will be released worldwide on August 24, 2012 via Massacre Records!

SKELETONWITCH – New Song Stream Available

Posted in Extreme Metal, Heavy Metal, heavy metal news, metal music, Music, rock music, rock music news, Thrash Metal with tags , , , , , on April 2, 2012 by Metal Odyssey

Band Continues Pillaging Stages Across The U.S.

Today Ohio Metal goliaths SKELETONWITCH are streaming “new” track, “Tragedy of Days” at Prosthetic Records’ official bandcamp page. Never formally released on record in the States, the tune was recorded during the Forever Abomination sessions with producer Matt Hyde and appeared on the Decibel Magazine Flexi-Disc series (Oct. 2011 issue) as well as the Japanese edition of Forever Abomination.

Comments guitarist Scott Hedrick of the track: “’Tragedy of Days’ was an epic instrumental by [guitarist] Nate [Garnette]’s former band Serkesoron. They disbanded after the untimely passing of Serkesoron’s  frontman, Thom Wright. Shortly after the band called it quits, SKELETONWITCH was born. We re-recorded the track and Chance [Garnette] added vocals as a tribute to Thom, immortalizing him in song.”

Check out “Tragedy of Days” at THIS LOCATION.

In related news, the new vinyl reissues of the SKELETONWITCH‘s breakthrough releases Breathing The Fire and Beyond The Permafrost are now shipping from the Prosthetic Store. Both are available in three variants — splatter, half-and-half and 180-gram black wax — and feature gatefold Stoughton “tip-on” record jackets. Pictures of the limited-edition colored LPs can be seen HERE. The black vinyl versions of both albums will be available in select retail stores on April 10.

Additionally, the band recently unveiled a new video for the song “The Infernal Resurrection,” which comes off their The studio offering, Forever Abomination. To view the clip, which documents the band in live pillage mode in Europe, head over to Metal Injection.

SKELETONWITCH are currently setting stage ablaze on tour alongside The Black Dahlia Murder, Nile and labelmates Hour Of Penance. This marks the group’s first North American tour action of 2012 in support of latest full-length,  Forever Abomination. The band will take a brief break before heading overseas for a stretch of Euro dates.

TO/DIE/FOR – Signs With Massacre Records; New Album ‘Samsara’ Due Out Summer 2012

It seems like Gothic Metal became the national music for Finland – and among the leading acts you’ll find TO/DIE/FOR.

TO/DIE/FOR was founded in the middle of the 90’s. They soon released some mini-albums on their own and their first album “All Eternity” followed in 1999, released through Spinefarm Records (Finland)/Nuclear Blast (Europe). Soon the band became well-known within the gothic scene, not at last because of the excellent cover version of the 80’s classic “In The Heat Of The Night” (originally by Sandra). A tour with in Flames and Sentenced followed and proved that TO/DIE/FOR is more than an overnight sensation.

When their second album “Epilogue” was released in 2001, the single “Hollow Heart” reached a top position at the Finnish single charts in advance. A tour with Lacrimosa followed, another successful step in the history of this outstanding Gothic Metal act.

After the band focused on the songwriting and took a small break, their third record “Jaded” was released in 2003. Once again a rocking Gothic Metal album, featuring those typical, melancholic and dark vocals of Jape Parätalo, which is one of the trademarks of the band. The fourth studio album “IV” (2005) followed and “Wounds Wide Open”, the fifth studio album, was released in October 2006. In autumn 2007 the band decided to take a break.

After many years of absence one of the pioneering Gothic Rock/Metal bands is back with their new album “Samsara”, which will be released in summer 2012!

OVERKILL ‘The Electric Age’ – Once Again, A Reminder Of Thrash Metal Supremacy

Posted in Metal with tags , , , , , , on April 2, 2012 by Metal Odyssey

OVERKILL – Yes that’s Chaly once again on the front cover of this new Overkill album. Another sign of Chaly and another new Overkill release means that the Thrash Metal genre is once again bigger, badder, meaner and stronger than it was before. Our Pit Bull of Thrash is once again unleashed. That’s how important Overkill is to Thrash Metal, in my most honest of Metal opinions. Overkill is THE worldwide leader of Thrash Metal. Why? Pure talent. Consistency. Legitimacy. Quality. Forget longevity… it’s their damn incredible and admirable perseverance that makes this band the iconic leader they are to Thrash Metal… and Metal in general too.

Okay, my ranting as a lifelong Overkill fan is now over. Um, no it’s not. On March 27th, 2012, The Electric Age, the sixteenth studio album from Overkill, was released on eOne Music. From the album opening drum blasts from Ron Lipnicki to the intensified vocals of Bobby “Blitz” Ellsworth on Come And Get It, straight on through to this album’s completion, I felt and heard the authority and passion of a Thrash Metal band that boasts a true classic lineup in 2012. Metal as my witness, these five men of Thrash have been together long enough to be considered a “classic” Overkill lineup.

The jaw-dropping guitar licks of Dave Linsk and Derek “The Skull” Tailer cannot be denied, a one-two power-packed punch of guitar grandeur. The all-encompassing Thrash energy I receive from The Electric Age swirls around my senses, making me feel like I’ve landed feet-first in a Thrash Metal field of dreams, with my Metal chick by my side… and kegs of cold beer aplenty. D.D. Verni plays his bass (as usual) with a Thrashing vengeance and his trademark backing vocals are as powerful as ever.

Once I heard Come And Get It, Electric Rattlesnake and Wish You Were Dead, it’s as if the thunder strike had been aimed upon my brain, driving home the clear fact that Overkill is kicking some insane Thrash Metal ass in 2012, almost like they’ve never kicked ass like this before. Seriously. I’m so damn astonished by the totality of this Overkill ambush of Thrash on The Electric Age, that I want to fall to my knees and beg for mercy. Um, forget mercy… I want more.

What’s so damn crazy about Overkill, is there is always melody in them there grooves of Thrash they administer to my ears. Black Daze has the thick Groove Metal and Thrash Metal alliance happening and it’s superlatively played by Overkill on all counts. Whoa and throw some F’n cold water in my face. 21st Century Man is a song that’s ablaze with every fabulous aspect about Overkill that I could possibly think of. Killer vocals. Killer speed. Killer guitar solo. Killer double bass. Killer riffs. Killer everything. Metal be thy name.

If we’re talking about “Metal Album Of 2012” contenders, I am placing The Electric Age at the very top of my list right now. Overkill could have given up years ago and returned in 2012 as a “reunion band”. Instead, Overkill never went anywhere, this Thrash Metal band has done more than “stood the test of time”, Overkill has established themselves as THE measuring stick within our Thrash Metal community, never letting us loyal fans down. The Electric Age is just another fitting example of this band’s extensive Thrash supremacy. Metallica who?

Swedish riff gods GRAND MAGUS have just released the cover artwork of their upcoming masterpiece “The Hunt”. The cover art was done by Arik Roper (CATHEDRAL, HIGH ON FIRE, SLEEP), he also did the cover artwork of the GRAND MAGUS album “Iron Will”.

JB commented:
“Arik Roper is a super-talented artist and we’ve had the pleasure of working with him before when he did the cover art for our album Iron Will. This time around with the overall feel and lyrical themes of our new album THE HUNT, Arik was the perfect choice once again. We basically just gave him the title and he created one of the most haunting and suggestive images ever seen. He totally nailed what the album is all about. To say we are pleased is a gigantic understatement! This piece of art will stand the test of time and become classic.”

“The Hunt” will be released in Europe May 25, 2012 and on June 5th, 2012 in North America, via Nuclear Blast.

SOULFLY ‘ENSLAVED’ – Soulfly Has Raised Their Own Bar Of Metal Excellence

Posted in groove metal, Heavy Metal, heavy metal albums, heavy metal news, metal music, Music, rock music, rock music news, Thrash Metal with tags , , , , , on March 30, 2012 by Metal Odyssey

SOULFLY – The eighth studio album from Soulfly, Enslaved, was released on March 13, 2012, via Roadrunner Records. It’s a killer. With a “slave theme” throughout, just another dark side of mankind is brought to the Metal forefront by Max Cavalera and his band. If anyone out there needs to hear a legendary voice and musician of Metal… Max Cavalera is just that on Enslaved.

I was counting the days for this Soulfly release. I knew this album was going to resonate Metal in its heaviest form, with appreciative quality from world-class Metal musicians. As I listen to the vocals of Max Cavalera, the lyrics and brutal themes to the songs on Enslaved are magnified with an unparalleled realism. Whoa. Max has Soulfly at the top of the heaviest tier of Metal bands with this Enslaved release. There’s no doubt in my Metal mind about this.

One of my favorite tracks on Enslaved is Plata O Plomo. I cannot get enough of Soulfly’s Groove Metal and extreme rhythm stomp, courtesy of Tony Campos (bass) and David Kinkade (drums). Tony Campos also lends vocals on Plato O Plomo. The inclusion of a Flamenco guitar, during and at the conclusion of this song, gives it such a diverse touch that it’s insanely grand.

Soulfly solidifies their ever impressive Thrash capabilities with American Steel and it F’n scorches and shreds! Whoa. American Steel has left its Thrash mark on my Metal soul. The tempo of the second half of this song may slow down some, still, the intensity of the vibes that American Steel gives off are there to behold. Once again, Soulfly shows off their astute diversity for the song with Max playing the sitar as the coda.

I cannot express any louder or clearer, just how proficient of a guitarist Marc Rizzo is. Marc is a thrill to listen to and he belongs mentioned in the “best of class” when it comes to Metal guitarists… or any Rock guitarist for that matter. The tones of Marc’s guitar are surely showcased throughout Enslaved. On Treachery, Marc just let’s it all loose, proving his dynamical presence is indeed an asset to Soulfly.

Across the board on Enslaved, the Metal is not just great… the Metal is exceptional. As I’ve stated in the past, I listen to a great deal of Metal and I don’t bullshit around. Soulfly has raised their own bar of Metal excellence with Enslaved. This is an album that holds a very strong chance at being #1 on my best of list at year’s end. Metal be thy name.

About: Rising from the smoky ashes of their former bands Disthrone, Through Rose-Tinted Glasses and Prophecy of Plagues, THE TIDE WILL TAKE US is a groove metal band named for the murky, volatile Georgian Bay waters the Wasaga Beach, ON five-piece call home. Formed by guitarists Mike Longeri and Jesse Carter via an impromptu debauchery post-concert jam, the duo soon had drummer Dave Hilder, bassist Taylor Riley and vocalist Matt Cola on board to plaster on their signature layers of grit and sludge to the melodic tunes they were churning out.

In just over one year together as a band, The Tide Will Take Us have already earned a reputation for their out of control, animalistic, musically tight and uncompromising live sets and have just completed recording their full-length debut album “Putrid Dynasty” produced by Jon Howard (Threat Signal) and Bjorin “Speed” Strid (Soilwork) to follow-up their self-titled five-song debut EP, produced by Kent Sheehey (The Vegas Wake Up).
