SHAKRA “Powerplay” – Releases In North America On January 29th, via AFM RECORDS; “Wonderful Life” Video Is Online!

“Powerplay”: the title says it all. The 9th album of Swiss Power Rockers SHAKRA, picks up where their last chart-breaking album, Back on Track, left off.

‘Even though it is difficult to top being No. 2 in the charts, we believe that the new album has got what it takes to do just that!’,the band explains in a mix of confidence and sober analysis. ‘We are very satisfied with “Powerplay”. Now it’s up to the public and the fans”.

Even after 20 years of band history, the original band members Thom Blunier (guitar), Thomas Muster (guitar), and Roger Tanner (drums) along with the band’s two young guns, Dominik Pfister (bass) and most particularly singer John Prakesh, have grown together over the years to build a unit that has just one overriding goal: to make good, honest, hand-made Hard Rock.

While SHAKRA had to deal with a few line-up changes over the years, the five-man band now at last has the time to focus completely on what it does best: Rock’n’Roll. The result is Blunier, Muster, Tanner, Pfister, and Prakesh’s “Powerplay”, an album that is utterly irresistible.

The 13-track LP is the most varied SHAKRA album so far. The band has grown and blossomed in this formation throughout the 50 gigs they have played together. Songs such as “Dream of Mankind”, “Higher”, “Wonderful Life” and “Because Of You” display the whole variety of SHAKRA’s sound. The album was once again produced by Thom Blunier in the Powerride studios. “Powerplay” is a high-class traditional but at the same time up-to-date piece of work. What more could a fan ask for?

THE LAST WARNING – Signs With Massacre Records

Austria’s Thrashers THE LAST WARNING have signed with Massacre Records!

The band was formed in 1999 and released their first demo “In Case Of Fire” in 2003. They signed with Ton 4 Records a year later, recorded their debut “Face 2 Face” and played numerous shows and festivals. Their second album “Chainbreaker” followed in 2006 and their touring extended to Slovenia, Slovakia and the Czech Republic, sharing the stage with bands such as Maroon, Deadsoil and Machine Made God.

One of the band’s milestones happened in the summer of 2007 when they were invited to Indonesia for a headliner tour. They played in Bali, Java and Sumatra and performed as headliner on the main stage at the Soundrenaline Festival in Padang, Sumatra, in front of more than 20.000 people! They returned to Indonesia in 2008 and played gigs in front 25.000 people in Pekanbaru and 45.000 people in Medan.

Their latest album “Elegance Of Bloodiness” was released in October 2009 via 7Hard Records.

THE LAST WARNING finished their upcoming album in December 2012. It was recorded at the Music Factory/Prophecy Studios with producer R.D. Liapakis (Mystic Prophecy, Devil’s Train) and sound engineer Christian Schmid.

Vocalist Hans-Jürgen Moitzi commented:
“Working with Lia and Christian was awesome! Lia kicked our asses to get the best out of the band. The new album is a real thrash monster! We are also very proud to be part of the Massacre Records family now. Massacre Records is the perfect label for our upcoming album!”

Performing the band’s most famous and influential album from 1974 ‘Desolation Boulevard’ live, SWEET’s ‘Desolation Boulevard Revisited’ recaptures the album in concert with all of the raw energy that can only come from a live performance.

Originally titled ‘Sweet Fanny Adams’ in the UK, the 1974 US release of the album, re-titled ‘Desolation Boulevard’, was a turning point for the band featuring, for the first time, more of a hard rock sound. The album yielded classic hits such as ‘Ballroom Blitz’, ‘Fox On The Run’ and ‘The Six Teens’, catapulting the band to international stardom!

Says original member Andy Scott: “SWEET’s ‘Desolation Boulevard’ album was groundbreaking back in 1974 and proved to be a major influence on soon to be famous rock bands such as Kiss, Motley Crue, Def Leppard and many more. The album was a tightly produced collection of Power Pop Heavy Rock Radio Friendly tunes that still sound great today. This was the album that accelerated SWEET into a Major Headlining Touring Band in the ’70s, a testament of anyone who saw the band ‘live’. 2013 Installment Of Iconic Fest Confirmed

MassConcerts proudly presents the first details for NEW ENGLAND METAL & HARDCORE FESTIVAL 2013, today confirming the dates and preliminary list of bands for this year’s occurrence of the long-running annual event.

For the 2013 installment, the NEW ENGLAND METAL & HARDCORE FESTIVAL will once again overthrow the historic venue, The Palladium, in Worcester, Massachusetts, this year marking the 15th anniversary of the iconic weekend-long gathering! The festivities will commence with a pre-party on April 18th, 2013 and the three official days of the fest following on the 19th, 20th, and 21st.

Commented the festival’s founder Scott Lee of MassConcerts: “I am excited with how far we have come and am ecstatic for this to be on our 15th year! It has been a long, interesting journey. We always try to make it a memorable event and we really hope you all enjoy the festival this year.”

With more than forty acts from all realms of the extreme music world already set to storm the two stages of NEW ENGLAND METAL & HARDCORE FESTIVAL XV — and with many more to be announced in the coming weeks — the confirmed headliners for the event will include Hatebreed, Opeth and Suicidal Tendencies, as well as legendary thrash titans Anthrax performing their Among The Living album in its entirety, as part of their headlining spot on the Metal Alliance Tour.

Frontiers Records is pleased to announce the release of GREAT WHITE’s celebrative live album 30 Years – Live From the Sunset Strip on February 22nd in Europe and February 26th in North America.

To mark its 30th Anniversary LIVE on March 22, 2012, GREAT WHITE celebrated the only logical way – on stage. In a nod to its early days, GREAT WHITE returned to the infamous Sunset Strip, where a storied past of music’s biggest fans are fused into the walls of the Key Club. GREAT WHITE delivered its entire repertoire to a packed house, pining for the band’s raw energy and cheering its illustrious history track after track.

The Southern California Blues Hard Rock band debuted with a Don Dokken / Michael Wagener produced EP in 1983 and later on were signed by EMI for 1984’s self-titled debut album. Since then, GREAT WHITE has achieved worldwide success, encompassing sales of over six million records. They received a Grammy nomination for Best Hard Rock Performance for the song “Once Bitten, Twice Shy” and earned a double platinum certification for the album “…Twice Shy”.

It’s the soulful, Blues-based signature sound that turned songs like “Face The Day”, “Rock Me” and “Save Your Love” into international hits. The late 80’s were boom years for the band, marked by non-stop touring with some of the biggest bands of the era, including stints in Europe and Japan. GREAT WHITE recorded two more albums for Capitol — “Hooked”, which was certified gold and “Psycho City”.

“The first impression is that the new ones are a bit heavier than the stuff from The Blackened Halo and a bit more straight forward. A lot of double-bass action is going on in those first songs!”

We’re happy to welcome TEARS OF MARTYR from Madrid, Spain, to the Massacre Records family!

The band was formed in the mid-90’s in Gran Canaria, Spain. They released their first demo The Essence Of Evil in 1996, which gained good reviews. The second demo Renascence followed in 2005.

They already played several club shows, for example with: To/Die/For, Swallow The Sun, Draconian and Epica.

Entrance, TEARS OF MARTYR’s debut album was released in 2009 via STF Records.

The band won an award as the best Spanish band of the year at the Female Metal Awards in 2009.

TEARS OF MARTYR are now ready to deliver their second album Tales, which was recorded in August 2012 at the New Sin Studios in Loria, Italy, with Enrik Garcia and Luigi Stefanini.

We’re excited that DEADLANDS’ debut album will be released via Massacre Records!

The band was formed in the summer of 2010 by lead vocalist Brian O’Connor (Consfearacy, ex-Vicious Rumors), lead guitarist Michael J. Gardner (The Council), lead guitarist Kevin Rohr (Spectre), bassist extraordinaire Steve “Dedbass” Northam and drummer Danny Sablan (HateFX, The Council).

Their intention was to write and produce their own brand of Heavy Metal, while utilizing their past and present influences as a foundation and inspiration for their musical direction.

DEADLANDS is quickly establishing a large fan base, being nominated for a 2012 Sacramento Area Music Award (SAMMIES), playing live, and sharing the stage with artists such as Exodus, Anvil, Y&T, Great White, Death Angel and more.

DEADLANDS’ debut album features guest solo appearances by legendary Heavy Metal guitarists: Hank Shermann (Mercyful Fate), Michael Denner (Mercyful Fate/King Diamond), Andy LaRocque (King Diamond), Claudeous Creamer (Dragonlord), Mike Wead (Mercyful Fate/King Diamond), Glen Alvelais (Forbidden/Testament/HateFX) and Steve Smyth (Nevermore/Forbidden).

“Evilution” was mixed and mastered by DEADLANDS and Juan Urteaga (Machine Head, Testament) at Trident Studios.

SANNHET – Brooklyn Group To Drop Debut LP Via Newly Founded Sacrament Music

The dawn of 2013 also saw the birth of a brand new indie record label, founded by the owners of Brooklyn’s premier dark music institution and watering hole, Saint Vitus Bar… welcome Sacrament Music. “Sacrament’s mission is to proliferate the culture that is experienced by thousands every year at our club through recordings, merchandise, mixtapes, and of course EPIC shows” states the label’s freshly launched website.

The Sacrament Music/Saint Vitus crew brought local outfit and close cohorts SANNHET on board, and have locked down the label’s maiden release. Founded in late 2010, the instrumental trio known as SANNHET has amassed a diehard audience within Brooklyn’s broad underground music circuit through their abundant live performances throughout the borough, always choreographed with electrifying visuals.

Known Flood, SANNHET’s sprawling debut LP, features nearly forty-five minutes of their electrified post-metal, fueled with domineering riff-building movements and intense percussive hostility, unifying in a slightly blackened and trance-inducing atmospheric style, captured by Colin Marston (Krallice, Behold… The Arctopus, Dysrhythmia) and mastered by Carl Saff. Sacrament Music will release the album digitally and on LP, the pressing limited to 500 with 100 on colored wax. Preorders are available HERE.

Transcendental audio/visual drone unit DARSOMBRA are heading south for a chunk of the Winter. This week the duo announces plans to escape the frozen clutches of Baltimore for the latter half of February, opting to instead tour the Southeastern states of the country. While there are still several dates being hammered out, the Wintour 2013 kicks off on February 15th and will snake through Virginia, North Carolina, Georgia, Louisiana, Texas, Arkansas and Tennessee in support of the recently released Climax Community LP. Preceding the tour, this Friday, January 4th the twosome will rock out in their hometown, sharing the stage with Radical Discharge and the massive duo Jucifer.

INFALLING – From Cleveland, Ohio, cometh INFALLING. This (multi-genre influenced) trio of Metal musicians are worth every second of your time; especially if you’re into Metal that will assault your ears while you beg for more! Their EP, Path Of Desolation, was released back in September of 2012 and carries a ton of shelf life; INFALLING have created a potent and quality crop of 5 songs. This is an EP I won’t be putting away anytime soon!

INFALLING are three Metal musicians that are gonna go places, I feel and hear it. Their Hardcore meets Metal assault is sandwiched between album instrumental opener Genesis and album instrumental closer Revelations. Both the intro and exit on Path Of Desolation truly defines this band’s Progressive and Classic Rock influences quite soundly.

As for the Hardcore Metal that’s smack-dab-in-the-middle of this astoundingly produced EP: whoop-ass to the maximum potential! Tony Balante is as fierce as a caged rattlesnake on vocals! Tony comes across as very comfortable in his surroundings; there’s nothing that sounds forced or ill contrived, a very confident vocalist is he.

What a Metal band across the Metal board. Seriously. When INFALLING came across my Metal path over this New Years holiday, I was completely impressed; from their totality of destructive Hardcore style of Metal sound to their top-tier quality of songs I inhaled from Path Of Desolation. Get into INFALLING now, before they are selling out the clubs consistently as a headliner. Metal be thy name.

Relocation Is On The Horizon For Stone… What’s Next For Metal Odyssey?

I did mention back in the Fall of 2012 (both here and on twitter) that my family and I were in the beginning phases of relocating to Ohio. It’s time to report that we are now in the mosh pit of relocating. Things are crazy around here with schedules, packing and basically uprooting our lives to another state. My love and commitment to my family has and always shall be #1, while my everlasting devotion to Metal will never exit my soul.

From now until the beginning days of March (2013) there may not be as many posts launched on Metal Odyssey that you are normally used to. Days and perhaps (worst case scenario) weeks may go by without seeing a new feature or post launched on this site. In the meantime, there will be posts launched throughout January and the archives of Rock N’ Metal will forever be at your reach; right here at Metal Odyssey. Please enjoy them, any or all!

Listed below are 3 standout albums that eluded me during their original year of release. For all the Hard Rock/Metal fans out there, do yourself a favor and treat yourself to some truly great music!!

Paul Stanley – One Live Kiss

This live album from Paul Stanley came out in 2008. I have to admit, that I’ve never been a big KISS fan. There are many of their songs that I do like, only I’ve always felt that they’re a bit over the top as a band. Anyway, a few months ago I was curious to hear how Destroyer (Resurrected) was going to sound. When I typed KISS onto my iTunes account, all the KISS albums displayed and this Paul Stanley album caught my eye. I sampled a few tunes and thought it wasn’t half bad. I did a little research and discovered that this Live album is only available on iTunes or DVD. I made the purchase! Man O’ Man, does this album Rock!!! It’s a great mix of Classic KISS and solo Paul Stanley.

Covered Call – Money Never Sleeps

Money Never Sleeps came out in 2009. Just like the Paul Stanley album, I stumbled upon this Covered Call album on iTunes and gave it a sample. I really liked what I heard and bought it! When I listen to Money Never Sleeps, many of the songs remind me a lot of the good ones Bon Jovi put out in the 80’s and 90’s. My favorite songs are, Til’ the End, Nothing at All and What about Us.

Robert Johnson’s Tombstone came out in 2006. I really dig this album, it’s (kind of) a Southern Hard Rock album recorded by a band that doesn’t get enough credit here in the States. If you like the Jammin that Southern Rock offers you won’t be disappointed with the song Don’t Wanna Talk about Love, which is probably my favorite song on Robert Johnson’s Tombstone.

In my humble opinion, if you’re looking to spend a few Christmas dollars on yourself this new year, any one of these albums surely won’t disappoint!
