HAVOK – Point Of No Return – 4 Song/2 Video EP Blazes With A Thrash Metal Assailment

Posted in Heavy Metal, heavy metal albums, heavy metal news, metal music, Music, rock music, rock music news, Thrash Metal, thrash metal bands with tags , , , , , , on April 13, 2012 by Metal Odyssey

HAVOK – Releasing on May 22nd, 2012, on Candlelight Records, is the Point Of No Return EP from the Thrash Metal pack from Colorado, world known as HAVOK. This EP includes four songs and two music videos from Time Is Up, the band’s critically acclaimed Candlelight Records release from 2011. Two songs are brand new, along with two cover songs: (Sepultura) Arise and (Slayer) Postmortem/Raining Blood.

These young guns of Thrash Metal are one of the reasons why I feel confident about our beloved genre’s future. HAVOK plays their brand of Thrash Metal with abundant old school bite, while still sounding hellishly relevant. HAVOK admirably captures an aggressive sound with solid (not over-polished) production. These Thrashers come across with a commanding Metal presence, their astuteness with their instruments, coupled with the vocals of David Sanchez, allows their songs to sound so incredibly strong.

If you were blown away by the last full-length from HAVOK, you shall find this EP to be quite the Thrashing companion to that album. The intensity level that HAVOK plays at, on all four songs I’ve been consuming from this EP, is seriously riveting to my Metal senses. The title track alone is a Thrash Metal gemstone. Both Point Of No Return and From The Cradle To The Grave are guaranteed to ignite the adrenaline levels of any Thrash Metal connoisseur out there. I swear by that statement.

Just the thought of covering songs from superior Metal legends such as Slayer and (Classic) Sepultura makes me shudder. Timeless Thrash songs are just that. However, HAVOK rips and tears into Sepultura’s Arise and Slayer’s Post Mortem/Raining Blood. I admire the Thrash Metal allegiance that HAVOK has bestowed upon these classics and David Sanchez sings them with an air of reverence, in my Metal opinion.

A scorching listen and an absolute must buy is Point Of No Return from HAVOK. With the two videos as a bonus, this EP is yet another mandatory Metal recommendation that I am passing onto my fellow Metal brethren. Metal be thy name.

HAVOK:

David Sanchez – lead vocals/guitars

Jesse De Los Santos – bass/vocals

Pete Webber – drums

Reece Scruggs – lead guitar/vocals

UNTIMELY DEMISE – Denied Entry To The U.S.; Current Tour Ends At The Border

Posted in Heavy Metal, heavy metal news, metal music, Music, rock music, rock music news, Thrash Metal with tags , , , , , on April 12, 2012 by Metal Odyssey

Canadian Thrash trio UNTIMELY DEMISE were denied access to the United States earlier this week, only several dates into their three-week tour of the western half of North America.

Having successfully blazed their way through the first five performances in Canada on their way south, UNTIMELY DEMISE proceeded to the border checkpoint into Washington, and due to a logistical paperwork error involving one member, after multiple attempts, the band were not allowed entry into the country. Frustrated, they turned around and headed home, posting a statement on their Facebook last night explaining the situation in detail and apologizing to their American fans and friends they’d planned on raging with over the next few weeks. Get the full scoop on this unfortunate situation HERE, and stay tuned for future US live actions once this is all cleared up.

In the meantime, the band still have some badass regional gigs confirmed in Saskatchewan and Alberta in May, and will have more to broadcast in the weeks ahead.

UNTIMELY DEMISE Confirmed Live Dates:

5/04/2012 Amigos Cantina – Saskatoon, SK w/ Mares Of Thrace

5/12/2012 The Distillery – Calgary, AB w/ Massacre @ Chuck Schuldiner memorial birthday bash

5/14/2012 The Pawn Shop – Calgary, AB w/ Massacre

All the bands totally rule and we’re expecting to see some rowdy crowds. Prepare to have a sore neck and remember, no karate in the pit!”

SKELETONWITCH – New Song Stream Available

Posted in Extreme Metal, Heavy Metal, heavy metal news, metal music, Music, rock music, rock music news, Thrash Metal with tags , , , , , on April 2, 2012 by Metal Odyssey

Band Continues Pillaging Stages Across The U.S.

Today Ohio Metal goliaths SKELETONWITCH are streaming “new” track, “Tragedy of Days” at Prosthetic Records’ official bandcamp page. Never formally released on record in the States, the tune was recorded during the Forever Abomination sessions with producer Matt Hyde and appeared on the Decibel Magazine Flexi-Disc series (Oct. 2011 issue) as well as the Japanese edition of Forever Abomination.

Comments guitarist Scott Hedrick of the track: “’Tragedy of Days’ was an epic instrumental by [guitarist] Nate [Garnette]’s former band Serkesoron. They disbanded after the untimely passing of Serkesoron’s  frontman, Thom Wright. Shortly after the band called it quits, SKELETONWITCH was born. We re-recorded the track and Chance [Garnette] added vocals as a tribute to Thom, immortalizing him in song.”

Check out “Tragedy of Days” at THIS LOCATION.

In related news, the new vinyl reissues of the SKELETONWITCH‘s breakthrough releases Breathing The Fire and Beyond The Permafrost are now shipping from the Prosthetic Store. Both are available in three variants — splatter, half-and-half and 180-gram black wax — and feature gatefold Stoughton “tip-on” record jackets. Pictures of the limited-edition colored LPs can be seen HERE. The black vinyl versions of both albums will be available in select retail stores on April 10.

Additionally, the band recently unveiled a new video for the song “The Infernal Resurrection,” which comes off their The studio offering, Forever Abomination. To view the clip, which documents the band in live pillage mode in Europe, head over to Metal Injection.

SKELETONWITCH are currently setting stage ablaze on tour alongside The Black Dahlia Murder, Nile and labelmates Hour Of Penance. This marks the group’s first North American tour action of 2012 in support of latest full-length,  Forever Abomination. The band will take a brief break before heading overseas for a stretch of Euro dates.

OVERKILL ‘The Electric Age’ – Once Again, A Reminder Of Thrash Metal Supremacy

Posted in Metal with tags , , , , , , on April 2, 2012 by Metal Odyssey

OVERKILL – Yes that’s Chaly once again on the front cover of this new Overkill album. Another sign of Chaly and another new Overkill release means that the Thrash Metal genre is once again bigger, badder, meaner and stronger than it was before. Our Pit Bull of Thrash is once again unleashed. That’s how important Overkill is to Thrash Metal, in my most honest of Metal opinions. Overkill is THE worldwide leader of Thrash Metal. Why? Pure talent. Consistency. Legitimacy. Quality. Forget longevity… it’s their damn incredible and admirable perseverance that makes this band the iconic leader they are to Thrash Metal… and Metal in general too.

Okay, my ranting as a lifelong Overkill fan is now over. Um, no it’s not. On March 27th, 2012, The Electric Age, the sixteenth studio album from Overkill, was released on eOne Music. From the album opening drum blasts from Ron Lipnicki to the intensified vocals of Bobby “Blitz” Ellsworth on Come And Get It, straight on through to this album’s completion, I felt and heard the authority and passion of a Thrash Metal band that boasts a true classic lineup in 2012. Metal as my witness, these five men of Thrash have been together long enough to be considered a “classic” Overkill lineup.

The jaw-dropping guitar licks of Dave Linsk and Derek “The Skull” Tailer cannot be denied, a one-two power-packed punch of guitar grandeur. The all-encompassing Thrash energy I receive from The Electric Age swirls around my senses, making me feel like I’ve landed feet-first in a Thrash Metal field of dreams, with my Metal chick by my side… and kegs of cold beer aplenty. D.D. Verni plays his bass (as usual) with a Thrashing vengeance and his trademark backing vocals are as powerful as ever.

Once I heard Come And Get It, Electric Rattlesnake and Wish You Were Dead, it’s as if the thunder strike had been aimed upon my brain, driving home the clear fact that Overkill is kicking some insane Thrash Metal ass in 2012, almost like they’ve never kicked ass like this before. Seriously. I’m so damn astonished by the totality of this Overkill ambush of Thrash on The Electric Age, that I want to fall to my knees and beg for mercy. Um, forget mercy… I want more.

What’s so damn crazy about Overkill, is there is always melody in them there grooves of Thrash they administer to my ears. Black Daze has the thick Groove Metal and Thrash Metal alliance happening and it’s superlatively played by Overkill on all counts. Whoa and throw some F’n cold water in my face. 21st Century Man is a song that’s ablaze with every fabulous aspect about Overkill that I could possibly think of. Killer vocals. Killer speed. Killer guitar solo. Killer double bass. Killer riffs. Killer everything. Metal be thy name.

If we’re talking about “Metal Album Of 2012” contenders, I am placing The Electric Age at the very top of my list right now. Overkill could have given up years ago and returned in 2012 as a “reunion band”. Instead, Overkill never went anywhere, this Thrash Metal band has done more than “stood the test of time”, Overkill has established themselves as THE measuring stick within our Thrash Metal community, never letting us loyal fans down. The Electric Age is just another fitting example of this band’s extensive Thrash supremacy. Metallica who?

SOULFLY ‘ENSLAVED’ – Soulfly Has Raised Their Own Bar Of Metal Excellence

Posted in groove metal, Heavy Metal, heavy metal albums, heavy metal news, metal music, Music, rock music, rock music news, Thrash Metal with tags , , , , , on March 30, 2012 by Metal Odyssey

SOULFLY – The eighth studio album from Soulfly, Enslaved, was released on March 13, 2012, via Roadrunner Records. It’s a killer. With a “slave theme” throughout, just another dark side of mankind is brought to the Metal forefront by Max Cavalera and his band. If anyone out there needs to hear a legendary voice and musician of Metal… Max Cavalera is just that on Enslaved.

I was counting the days for this Soulfly release. I knew this album was going to resonate Metal in its heaviest form, with appreciative quality from world-class Metal musicians. As I listen to the vocals of Max Cavalera, the lyrics and brutal themes to the songs on Enslaved are magnified with an unparalleled realism. Whoa. Max has Soulfly at the top of the heaviest tier of Metal bands with this Enslaved release. There’s no doubt in my Metal mind about this.

One of my favorite tracks on Enslaved is Plata O Plomo. I cannot get enough of Soulfly’s Groove Metal and extreme rhythm stomp, courtesy of Tony Campos (bass) and David Kinkade (drums). Tony Campos also lends vocals on Plato O Plomo. The inclusion of a Flamenco guitar, during and at the conclusion of this song, gives it such a diverse touch that it’s insanely grand.

___________________________________

Soulfly solidifies their ever impressive Thrash capabilities with American Steel and it F’n scorches and shreds! Whoa. American Steel has left its Thrash mark on my Metal soul. The tempo of the second half of this song may slow down some, still, the intensity of the vibes that American Steel gives off are there to behold. Once again, Soulfly shows off their astute diversity for the song with Max playing the sitar as the coda.

I cannot express any louder or clearer, just how proficient of a guitarist Marc Rizzo is. Marc is a thrill to listen to and he belongs mentioned in the “best of class” when it comes to Metal guitarists… or any Rock guitarist for that matter. The tones of Marc’s guitar are surely showcased throughout Enslaved. On Treachery, Marc just let’s it all loose, proving his dynamical presence is indeed an asset to Soulfly.

Across the board on Enslaved, the Metal is not just great… the Metal is exceptional. As I’ve stated in the past, I listen to a great deal of Metal and I don’t bullshit around. Soulfly has raised their own bar of Metal excellence with Enslaved. This is an album that holds a very strong chance at being #1 on my best of list at year’s end. Metal be thy name.

DISINTEGRATE – Sign To Massacre Records; New Album Releasing July 2012

Posted in Death Metal, Heavy Metal, heavy metal news, metal music, Music, rock music, rock music news, Thrash Metal with tags , , , , , on March 29, 2012 by Metal Odyssey

Hard, melodic and straight to the point!

DISINTEGRATE, hailing from the north of Holland, has a definite preference for well-balanced arrangements and raw, energetic vocal lines, nicely served with a feisty Death Metal-sauce. Every musician in DISINTEGRATE has the freedom to develop his skills and show his musical prowess, thus creating a grooving mixture of aggression and melody.

DISINTEGRATE is the brain child of Danny Boonstra (vocals + keyboards), Leo van Leijen (guitars) and Jos Hindriks (guitars). When they started the band in 2005, a clear statement was defined outlining the structure and content for DISINTEGRATE: intelligent Melodic Death/Thrash Metal with no boundaries.

The band really took flight with the addition of Joran Dijkstra (drums) and Sander Stegeman (bass). By releasing the MCD “Destructive Capacity”, the band received a lot of attention and also played on the prestigious Waldrock festival in 2009 alongside bands like Carcass, Killswitch Engage and Heaven & Hell.

DISINTEGRATE’s new album “Parasites Of A Shifting Future” is going to be released on July 27, 2012!

Posted in Heavy Metal, heavy metal news, metal music, Music, rock music, rock music news, Thrash Metal, thrash metal bands with tags , , , , , on March 28, 2012 by Metal Odyssey

Exumer are unveiling the third single from Fire & Damnation on AOL’s Noisecreep.com. The track can be heard now HERE. The Weakest Limb is the latest in a batch of singles to be heard from the album including: Vermin of the Sky on MetalHammer.de and Fire & Damnation on MetalBlade.com. Fire & Damnation will be released worldwide by Metal Blade Records – April 10th in North America and April 6th/10th in Europe/UK.

Exumer have been confirmed to play a series of live shows in South America in May and June, 2012! The trek will take the band through Argentina, Chile and Brazil. Danish thrash masters ARTILLERY are joining them on the whole tour. This is EXUMER’s first appearance in South American in 24 years, where the band last played in Brazil in 1988.

Vocalist Mem V. Stein comments: “We have been waiting for this moment for a long, long time! It’s a huge milestone in our career to return to Brazil after 24 years, where there are numerous online communities that wholeheartedly embrace EXUMER and where our fans have been loyally following us since our first appearances in the 1980s. There could hardly be a more cult tour package, between EXUMER and ARTILLERY, to hit South America and the timing could not be better for us to return there shortly after the release of our new album.”

SKELETONWITCH – New Video Premiere Brought To You By Metal Injection, U.S. Tour Underway, European Tour Dates Announced

Posted in Extreme Metal, Heavy Metal, heavy metal news, metal music, Music, rock music, rock music news, Thrash Metal, thrash metal bands with tags , , , , , , on March 24, 2012 by Metal Odyssey

U.S. TOUR UNDERWAY, EUROPEAN DATES ANNOUNCED!

Ohio Metal titans SKELETONWITCH unveil their brand new video for “The Infernal Resurrection.” The song comes off latest album, Forever Abomination which cracked the Billboard Top 200, as well as Decibel’s Top 40 of 2011 and finds the band doing what they do best: slaying ears in the live arena. To view the video, head over to THIS LOCATION.

Like Satan himself set loose in the hallowed halls of Heavy Metal, these Athens-based headbangers careen wildly through the music’s history, gleefully destroying and setting flame to every genre along the way, only stopping at the forefront of today’s Metal scene to look back and watch that fucker burn — and then piss on the flames. No other band has tapped into the fire, fury, and frost of all things Metal like SKELETONWITCH.

Released last October through Prosthetic Records, Forever Abomination continues to raise eyebrows with its relentless, fuck-all attack. In an 8/10 rating of the record, Decibel Magazine named SKELETONWITCH, “one of the most likeable bands in Metal,” Terrorizer dubbed Forever Abomination a “masterclass in Modern Metal,” Revolver noted its “bad-ass Thrash attack,” while Pitchfork championed the offering calling it “exciting, skilled, fist-pumping, true-to-life stuff…”

SKELETONWITCH return to the road today beginning with a warm-up show in Cleveland before joining forces with The Black Dahlia Murder, Nile and labelmates Hour Of Penance for a four-week tour that concludes at the New England Metal And Hardcore Festival. This marks the group’s first North American tour action of 2012. The band will take a brief break before heading overseas for a stretch of Euro dates.

SKELETONWITCH – North American Tour To Commence This Week

Posted in death thrash, Heavy Metal, heavy metal news, metal music, Music, rock music, rock music news, Thrash Metal with tags , , , , , on March 21, 2012 by Metal Odyssey

Vinyl Reissues Forthcoming

Ohio headbangers SKELETONWITCH — whose latest album, Forever Abomination, cracked the Billboard Top 200, as well as Decibel’s Top 40 of 2011 — will return to the road this week. After a warm-up show in Cleveland on Friday, the band will join forces with The Black Dahlia Murder, Nile and labelmates Hour Of Penance for a four-week tour that concludes at the New England Metal And Hardcore Festival. This marks the group’s first North American touring action of 2012.

In other SKELETONWITCH news, the final color variant of the forthcoming Breathing The Fire vinyl reissue — which, unlike the sold-out initial pressings of the album, comes in a gatefold Stoughton “tip-on” jacket — has arrived at Prosthetic’s warehouse. Check out a picture of the two-color, half-and-half LP, which is limited to 125 copies at THIS LOCATION.

180-gram black and standard-weight “fire splatter” wax are also available. The former will arrive in select retail stores on April 10; the latter and the half-and-half LP can both be pre-ordered at the PROSTHETIC STORE. LP reissues of the band’s 2007 breakthrough, Beyond The Permafrost — which will also be available in three color variants (“Permafrost splatter,” half-and-half and 180-gram black vinyl) — are still in production, but can also be pre-ordered now at the Prosthetic Store.

Over the last five years, SKELETONWITCH has toured alongside a who’s who of heavy metal, from icons like Danzig, Ozzy Osbourne and Rob Halford, to international titans Amon Amarth, Arch Enemy and Dimmu Borgir, to American powerhouses High On Fire, GWAR and Devildriver. Forever Abomination, the group’s third Prosthetic release, was produced by Matt Hyde (Slayer, Children of Bodom).
