This critically acclaimed album, 13, was released on June 11th, 2013 in the U.S. and is an incredible offering of Metal from the founders of our beloved genre. Black Sabbath may be minus the legendary Bill Ward for 13, still, I am overly impressed by the total Sabbathian package of darkness and old school Doom vibes that blanket my senses each time I listen to 13.
As for the production of 13, regardless of any slight fuzz looming about, (which I find old school anyways), the powerful vocals of Ozzy Osbourne coupled with the unparalleled Doom riffage from Tony Iommi transcends any flaws that “some” critics believe to exist. Geezer Butler shines once again as well, proving to me he truly is among the kings of Heavy Metal bassists of both past and present.

I give Brad Wilk so much credit for accepting a challenge to fill the shoes of the legendary Bill Ward. A world-class drummer in his own right, Brad Wilk excels on 13! It’s damn right heroic of Brad’s ability to transform his musicianship to sound so amazingly Sabbath-like. (If any other drummers sat in for the 13 sessions, than I’m not aware of it and please excuse my not being informed).
How much input did Rick Rubin have in mixing and mastering 13 I do not know. I’ll say this much, Rick Rubin surpassed my expectations on 13; due to my anxious thoughts he would turn this album into an overly pasted-together and satin-polished Death Magnetic. 13 sounds much more organic than that, thank God.
Doom Metal was forged and pioneered by Black Sabbath. Stoner Metal spun-off from this iconic band’s Metal atmosphere of sound. 13 is a resounding reminder of just that. This is one Black Sabbath album I never thought would happen and it’s here. Go out and get it and be thankful we still have this band around to make our Metal world that much more prolific.
God isn’t dead; nor is Black Sabbath.

BLACK STAR RIDERS have revealed the official video for Hey Judas, taken form the band’s new album All Hell Breaks Loose. The video was filmed on May 27th with Northern Irish photographer, music video director and typographical designer MarkHylands at The Marshall Theatre in Milton Keynes.
Los Angeles, CA – In the spirit of such classic tracks as Master Of The Universe and Silver Machine, legendary Hawkwind member Nik Turner will be releasing a new single Fallen Angel STS-51-L digitally on July 2, 2013 and a limited edition 7-inch vinyl (only 500 pressed) on July 14th. Making this event even more exciting, a mind-bending video will accompany the single featuring footage from Nik’s recent performance at The Echoplex in Los Angeles! The single begins the countdown to the launch of Turner’s highly anticipated full-length album, Space Gypsy, which will feature guest appearances by Steve Hillage of Gong and former Hawkwind bandmate Simon House!
Nik Turner was a founding member of Hawkwind during what has been considered their most commercially successful and critically acclaimed period from 1970 to 1976. He wrote/co-wrote some of the group’s most popular songs such as Brainstorm and Master Of The Universe, which was recently used in an ad campaign for Ford’s new B-Max car. Turner also made a rare U.S. appearance at this year’s SXSW festival with his new band, which includes former UK Sub Nicky Garratt and Jürgen Engler of German industrial band Die Krupps. The band entered the studio to record the new full-length album shortly after.

The price is $24.99 (U.S.). The list price is a whopping $27.98 (U.S.)!! Whoa!!
* One confusing thing about the Best Buy U.S. website: They list “2” release dates for this Monster – International Tour Edition. Yup. June 10, 2013 is the other release date. Go figure. I’m guessing June 18th is the real release date?
However, I won’t be buying it for just that 1 song. Noway. Houston, TX – Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall of Fame inductee, Gregg Rolie, best known for his vocals and keyboard work with legendary music groups Santana and Journey, will be performing at ‘Sandstock’ Virginia Beach Music Festival on June 22, 2013. TheGregg Rolie Band will be playing electrifying versions of several Santana classics such as “Evil Ways”, “Black Magic Woman”, “Soul Sacrifice”, “Jingo” and “No One To Depend On” as well as tracks from Rolie’s previous studio effort ‘Roots’, along with new songs. The Gregg Rolie Band consists of Adrian Areas (son of original Santana percussionist JoseChepito Areas) on Timbales, drummer Ron Wikso (The Storm/David Lee Roth/Richie Sambora), Elliot “Toby” Borrero on congas, Rocket Ritchotte on guitars, internationally acclaimed bassist Gary Brown and former Jean Luc Ponty keyboardist Wally Minko.
From his work with Santana and Journey, Gregg Rolie is no stranger to great musicianship. Given his experience and his desire to make the music the best it can be, he has chosen some of the best musicians in the world to bring his band and its music to life. Gregg was determined to resurrect the sound he helped shape and make famous as Santana’s original lead singer and keyboard player, while at the same time bringing it forward to the 21st century. To do that required finding just the right mix of experience, musicianship and chemistry. Having worked with some of the biggest names in music over the years and having toured the world many times over, these musicians have the skills to interpret this music in the way it is meant to be interpreted, as Gregg so intimately knows.

Ray Manzarek, keyboardist and founding member of The Doors, passed away today at 12:31PM PT at the RoMed Clinic in Rosenheim, Germany after a lengthy battle with bile duct cancer. He was 74. At the time of his passing, he was surrounded by his wife Dorothy Manzarek, and his brothers Rick and James Manczarek.
Manzarek is best known for his work with The Doors who formed in 1965 when Manzarek had a chance encounter on Venice Beach with poet Jim Morrison. The Doors went on to become one of the most controversial rock acts of the 1960s, selling more than 100-million albums worldwide, and receiving 19 Gold, 14 Platinum and five multi-Platinum albums in the U.S. alone. “L.A.Woman,” “Break On Through to the Other Side,” “The End,” “Hello, I Love You,” and “Light My Fire” were just some of the band’s iconic and ground-breaking songs. After Morrison’s death in 1971, Manzarek went on to become a best-selling author, and a Grammy-nominated recording artist in his own right. In 2002, he revitalized his touring career with Doors’ guitarist and long-time collaborator, Robby Krieger.
“I was deeply saddened to hear about the passing of my friend and bandmate Ray Manzarek today,” said Krieger. “I’m just glad to have been able to have played Doors songs with him for the last decade. Ray was a huge part of my life and I will always miss him.”
Manzarek is survived by his wife Dorothy, brothers Rick and James Manczarek, son Pablo Manzarek, Pablo’s wife Sharmin and their three children Noah, Apollo and Camille. Funeral arrangements are pending. The family asks that their privacy be respected at this difficult time.
