Some Metal and Rock ‘N Roll Thoughts – Sunday, April 29th, 2012

The legendary Lita Ford is returning once again with another “new” studio album. Living Like A Runaway will be released in North America on June 19th, 2012, via SPV/Steamhammer. Let’s all hope it’s not anywhere near like her last (2009) studio album: Wicked Wonderland. Ouch.

I haven’t gone looking for or heard any samples of Lita’s new album. The album cover alone definitely gives me a positive Rockin’ impression. There’s something mysteriously cool about railroad tracks on an album cover. The “highway theme” on album covers has been done far too often over the years. Railroad tracks, well, they… Rock.

From what I’ve gathered, the 2 – CD Live & Inspired from Godsmack will be released on May 15th, 2012, via Universal Republic. I dig Godsmack. Their last album, The Oracle, kicked my ass.

There was this moment I vividly recall; I was traveling by mule through the far reaches of the Northern Connecticut woods, when I was confronted by an elder and very wise Metalhead troll. My journey was abruptly stopped so he could tell me: “Stone, you just cannot deny the heavy music of them Godsmack dudes.”

Well, that’s it. Those are my Metal and Rock ‘N Roll thoughts for Sunday, April 29th, 2012. Not many, still, a couple of ’em for you to ponder and comment about. Metal be thy name.

MARTA GABRIEL of CRYSTAL VIPER – A Metal Odyssey Interview!

Posted in Heavy Metal, heavy metal albums, heavy metal news, metal music, Music, rock music, rock music interviews, rock music news, traditional heavy metal with tags , , , , , , on April 26, 2012 by Metal Odyssey

CRYSTAL VIPER – Recently, the forever Rockin’ HARD ROCK NIGHTS and Metal Odyssey teamed up for an exclusive interview with Marta Gabriel of Crystal Viper. Besides being the lead vocalist, Marta also is a guitarist, songwriter and lyricist for Crystal Viper, to name a few. Her knowledge of music and of course, Metal, is exemplary and radiates the skies from Crystal Viper’s recent release on AFM Records: Crimen Excepta.

Originating from the great country of Poland, Crystal Viper was founded in 2003 and plays Traditional Metal with potent relevance. After the success of 2010’s critically acclaimed Legends album (their first with AFM Records), Crystal Viper has become an international player in the world of Metal. Marta is surrounded by: Andy Wave (guitars), Tom Woryna (bass) and Golem (drums).

Marta talks about the band’s dynamic new album Crimen Excepta and songwriting to the worst moments her band has experienced on tour. Here is what Marta had to say:

Can you describe how the new album “Crimen Excepta” conceptually evolved?

Marta: “Before I started composing music, I wrote a story; a lyrical theme for the album. I was inspired by history, especially holy inquisition issues, and books such as “Malleus Maleficarum”, “The Name Of The Rose”, and others. After that I started composing the actual music, and that’s really why the whole album is so different in comparison to the previous ones we’ve put out; it’s darker, heavier; there’s more real feeling in the music. It all happened, because I had the whole story in front of my eyes whilst writing the actual songs; I was able to imagine situations described in the lyrics? I would say that this album is like a movie, but instead of pictures, it is told by music.”

What has been the turning point or momentum push thus far in the Metal career of Crystal Viper? Was it the (excellent) “Legends” album or something prior?

Marta: “Thank you first of all for the compliment; I’m glad you like “Legends”! I can say you’re right in some way, and that was a turning point, because “Legends” was our first album for AFM Records. It was a huge step for us, joining a bigger label.”

“Being part of good record company means better promotion for any band, which is very important, because, except for playing live, there are then so many more opportunities for new fans to discover your band. Joining AFM was, without doubt, a huge and important step, but I would say also, that every single live show, and every single album or single release is important too, as we truly enjoy what we do.”

I find “Ghosts Of Sherwood” to be an amazingly powerful song, both lyrically and musically. With “Ghosts Of Sherwood being the theme song for the 3D horror movie “Robin Hood”, how did this all come to pass?

Marta: “Well, we’d known the German company called Digidreams Studios, which is doing this movie, for quite a while; just through the scene and through video production. It turned out that Crystal Viper’s image and music for this record was going to fit perfectly to the atmosphere of the movie, so we started cooperating and it went from there.”

“I received the screenplay, wrote the song and the lyrics, and we were off. It’s worth mentioning that this song is quite different to the usual Crystal Viper stuff; it’s heavy but really melodic. I’m very, very glad that I composed a song for a movie; the film stars the great Tom Savini, and “Robin Hood: Ghosts Of Sherwood” (to give it it’s full title) will have its premiere during the Cannes movie festival, which is really a huge honour.”

What was the chemistry like between you and Andy writing the guitar parts for this new album? For that matter, the chemistry of the entire band while recording?

Marta: “Well, the chemistry was as good as always really; I wrote all the guitar parts and all the initial music, then we were all working on it, all together. I mean, the band, our producer, everyone gets involved.”

“We produced this album in a little bit of a different way though; everything was produced like in the ’80s; you know, Flying V guitars, tube amps, and real drums all the way, no copying or corrections? Everything you hear on the album was sung or played truly. I’m very proud of the final result, and I can’t wait to hear these songs on the vinyl release!”

“Crimen Excepta” shows an enormous musical strength through its balance. How difficult is it to not stray too far on either the heavy or the light side of the Metal sound?

Marta: “Again, thank you for the compliment. But we never plan or think like that really… To say, “All right; this needs to be heavier” or something like that would be fake in some way. A good song is a good song; everything is very natural and real. What you hear on the album comes out from our hearts and soul. We play the music that we love and I compose music I would like to listen to, all the time…… We don’t want to record the same album again and again; that’s why each Crystal Viper album is a little bit different. “Crimen Excepta” is definitely the heaviest and darkest, but they’re all very different.”

Which song on “Crimen Excepta” proved to be the largest challenge for you to sing? I feel “Medicus Animarum” is a shining moment (among many), but this song certainly must push the envelope for vocal execution?

Marta: “There are many songs that are less and many more difficult than that on this album, but before entering the studio, I had a lot of time to practice, for sure – we rehearsed everything a million times. We basically always do a strong pre-production before entering the studio, so we know what to expect; what sounds good and so on.”

“We don’t like to waste time in the studio. Everything that you hear on the album was sung; we didn’t use any tricks or corrections! It wouldn’t have made sense to do that, as later, I wouldn’t be able to sing moments like that live on stage.”

“There are many bands that sound totally different on the album to on stage, or bands who re-arrange the songs to make them easier to play or sing? Of course, if they are happy with doing something like that, then fine; but it’s not our way.”

Chris Moyen created an absolutely brilliant cover for “Crimen Excepta”. How important is it to convey the music of Crystal Viper through the album artwork?

Marta: “Very… Chris Moyen did a great cover for us again – but, he’d already painted cover artwork for our second single and 3rd album, and so, now with “Crimen Excepta”, he is like part of the family. Of course, it is very important to have the right album artwork, and I would say it’s important in the case of every single band and album? The front cover artwork is like the face of the album, telling you what you can expect, so it should be chosen or painted wisely. In the case of “Crimen Excepta”, everything is one, solid piece: album artwork, lyrics and music!”

What can you attribute to the strong success of Traditional Heavy Metal in Europe over the years? Besides a dedicated and large fan base, could it be the variety of Metal festivals and ease of touring within Europe?

Marta: “The strong success of Traditional Heavy Metal, you mean? I wouldn’t say so, as some Metal genres are surely more popular these days than it; but the truth is, Heavy Metal has been here for many, many years; trends come and go, but Traditional Metal stays. I think this genre simply deserves that respect – even bands, who play more modern genres of Metal, have their roots in Heavy Metal. Old-School Heavy Metal, as well as classic rock, is a base for all genres of heavy music.”

“There’s also lately a kind of New Wave Of Traditional Heavy Metal going around; young bands playing Old School Metal, and it’s really, really great.”

Okay, what is the worst thing that ever happened to Crystal Viper while out on tour?

Marta: “Well, there are many stories to tell, and every band has some stories to share, don’t they? The one that comes to my mind, right now, sounds quite funny now, but back then it wasn’t.”

“We were playing on a small open air festival (doesn’t matter in what country…); the stage had no roof, and it started to rain. We basically had a lot of special effects on stage (guitar peddles, that kind of thing…), and as the stage got wetter, there were sparks everywhere; the stage was soaked. My guitar amp suddenly exploded because it got all wet! The roadies brought another one on, but it also exploded! It was truly a weird show, but we did our best!”

“We also once played on an open air festival in winter; it was like -10 degrees, and the organizers “forgot” to put heaters on stage? And forgot to organize any dressing room for us, as well? Pretty interesting experience, I can tell you!”

If Crystal Viper could perform at a “Metal Dream Festival”, which other bands (past or present) would be on the bill?

Marta: “There are many great acts we would love to play with, but if I could choose, then the bill would be like this: King Diamond, Nifelheim, Hell, Immortal, Black Sabbath, Candlemass, Iron Maiden, Virgin Steele, Judas Priest, the list goes on!”

“Thanks for the interview!!”

Thank you Marta for giving your time!

Mötley Crüe – 1983 Album “Shout At The Devil” Is Stone’s Metal Pick Of The Day!

Posted in Hair Metal, Hard Rock, Heavy Metal, heavy metal albums, heavy metal news, metal music, Music, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , on April 25, 2012 by Metal Odyssey

Mötley Crüe – Released back in 1983, on Elektra, the sophomore album Shout At The Devil, from Mötley Crüe, launched them into the Heavy Metal stratosphere and the rest is Mötley Crüe history. What an album then and now. Seriously, when I first heard Shout At The Devil, there wasn’t another band in the land that sounded like Mötley Crüe. From the thickly heavy bass of Nikki Sixx and loud drumming of Tommy Lee, to the riffage fest that Mick Mars was playing; every car at all the hot hangouts and keg fields had this cassette blaring through the speakers back then!

I never took Mötley Crüe for a Hair Metal band until 1985’s Theatre Of Pain. Really. My interpretation of Too Fast For Love and Shout At The Devil was never Hair Metal; then again, that genre tag probably took awhile to hit my old neck of the woods anyhow. Bands were popping up so fast in those early 80’s, with albums being released faster, that I could care in the least about what genre a band was as they were coming out of L.A.; if it looked and sounded like Heavy Metal, then it probably was Heavy Metal. Thrash was Thrash, however. That’s how I approached it all those decades ago.

_______________________________

I remember liking Vince Neil’s vocals from the get-go, thinking that he and Mötley Crüe were taking a cool slice of Punk and mixing it with Heavy Metal. As I compared Shout At The Devil to their debut album, I couldn’t believe this was the same band. The tough-ass attitude and flamboyant personalities of these guys called Mötley Crüe, I really dug as a teenager. Seeing this band live during their heyday was UNBELIEVABLE. Metal be thy name it was.

My three favorite songs from Shout At The Devil are not the obvious: Bastard, Knock ‘Em Dead, Kid and Ten Seconds To Love. I always wished Mötley Crüe made an entire album that had that real heavy and fast sound like Bastard. What a song. Shout At The Devil is my favorite Mötley Crüe album, without question. Strong and incredibly memorable songs, with a heightened potency of sound that continues to lift my Metal spirit in 2012.

Original Shout At The Devil album cover.

I never owned Shout At The Devil on vinyl. I still have my original cassette of Shout At The Devil too. Yes, I did upgrade to CD and the remastered version has four demos and one unreleased track. The demos are a fun listen, they’re raw, lean, and crusty around the edges. They’re demos and they still Rock! The unreleased track I Will Survive is damn right cool, it isn’t as heavy duty as the other songs on the original Shout At The Devil track list. Still, it’s a song that cannot be ignored for it is loaded with memorable rhythm and lyrics.

5 STAR GRAVE – Sign To Massacre Records

Posted in Heavy Metal, heavy metal albums, heavy metal news, metal music, modern metal, Music, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , , on April 24, 2012 by Metal Odyssey

Meet 5 STAR GRAVE – politically incorrect and damn proud of it.

Brought back to life in 2005 by assembling the scattered unburied remains of 6 Italian punks, 5 STAR GRAVE equals a middle finger straight in the face of any kind of trend or musical compromises.

Their first album entitled “Corpse Breed Syndrome” was released in 2008 and received a great feedback from both media and fans for its recklessness, freshness and strong energetic vibe.

After almost 4 years, the band is now going to release their new album “Drugstore Hell”!

The album will offer a refinement of an already addictive and winning formula, able to combine extreme vocal aggression with catchy light-hearted melodies, a pounding rhythm section mixed with industrial keyboards and a sharp guitar work, all merged together in a boiling high-octane cauldron.

“Drugstore Hell” benefits of an impressive production by the award-winning producer Tobias Lindell (Europe, Hardcore Superstar, Crashdiet and others), who mixed and mastered the 11 new songs at the Bohus Sound Studios in Gothenburg, Sweden, granting the record a top-notch quality and an extremely aggressive sound.

The band about the message they want to spread with their music:

“Our music shall and will contain content that might be considered profane, unlawful, defamatory, libellous, abusive, incendiary, sexually offensive and obscene.”

Be prepared for “Drugstore Hell”, which is going to be released on May 25, 2012 via Massacre Records!

5 STAR GRAVE Line-up:

Claudio Ravinale – Vocals

Andrea Minolfi – Bass Guitar, Vocals

Thierry Bertone – Lead Guitar

Hervè De Zulian – Synth

Alessandro Blengino – Rhythm Guitar

Gabriele Lingue – Drums

KING DIAMOND – Stone’s Metal Pick Of The Day!

Posted in Heavy Metal, heavy metal albums, heavy metal news, metal music, Music, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , , , on April 20, 2012 by Metal Odyssey

KING DIAMOND – Metal Icon. Vocal brilliance. Lyrical mastermind. A true KING of Horror Metal. Any fan of King Diamond and/or Mercyful Fate knows what I’m talking about. My “Metal Pick Of The Day” for Friday, April 20th, 2012, is KING DIAMOND.

If you have never listened to any King Diamond or Mercyful Fate Metal in your life just yet… the time has cometh for you to realize; that you are missing out on some serious and historical Metal. You are missing out in a very profound way.

Yes, Abigail is the Metal Gem of the King Diamond discography. However, The Graveyard is one fantastically horrifying story to listen to. I’ll say this much: a young female child with a devotion to a severed head; plus it’s a severed head that is pure evil. ‘Nuff said.

Originally released back in 1996, this King Diamond album has grown on me like there is no tomorrow. I Am is my favorite song on The Graveyard, giving me the chills in a way I cannot even explain.

AVATAR “Torn Apart” (Official Video) – Mandatory Metal From Sweden!

Posted in Extreme Metal, Heavy Metal, heavy metal albums, heavy metal news, metal music, Music, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , , , on April 18, 2012 by Metal Odyssey

AVATAR – A Metal band that has caught my Metal attention this year, in an enormous way, is Sweden’s AVATAR. Their debut full-length, Black Waltz, was released back on February 14th of this year, via eOne Music. Below is the official music video for Torn Apart, just one of many Metal groove infested songs on Black Waltz.

AVATAR is dark, extreme, modern and groove laden with their Metal sound. Black Waltz is a solid reason as to why I am leaning towards choosing AVATAR as “Best Metal Newcomer Of 2012” and one of the best Metal albums I’ve listened to  thus far, this year. Crank up the Metal volume on Torn Apart below and you’ll might just agree with me!

IRON MAIDEN – EN VIVO! Is Stone’s Metal Pick Of The Day

Posted in Heavy Metal, heavy metal albums, heavy metal news, metal music, Music, progressive metal, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , , , , on April 18, 2012 by Metal Odyssey

IRON MAIDEN EN VIVO! – Released on March 26th, 2012, via Universal Music, is the live 2-CD from Iron Maiden: En Vivo! This amazing Iron Maiden concert was recorded on April 10, 2011, with over 50,000 fans in attendance at the Estadio Nacional in Santiago, the capital of Chile. I’m telling it like it is here, this is one incredibly fun listen and a must own for fans of Iron Maiden. Any Metalhead across the globe should find this double live Iron Maiden to have kick-ass Metal credentials!

Kevin “Caveman” Shirley produced, engineered and mixed this concert event into a top-tier live Metal album, so good is the production and sound quality that En Vivo! surpassed my expectations. Steve Harris co-produced this live gemstone and I cannot express enough admiration I have for his bass playing prowess. No one else even sounds remotely close to Steve Harris on bass. His signature tones are all over every song and… ’nuff said.

Bruce Dickinson sounds just fine and dandy to my middle-aged ears. I seriously walk away impressed by how Bruce sings on these live songs. Vintage. After all these years, it’s incredible to hear Bruce Dickinson sing at this level of quality… live. Certainly it’s not 1985 anymore and vocalists do adapt. If there was any technological assistance in making his vocals sound so grand, I’m not hearing it on En Vivo! or I’m missing it.

___________________________________

With six golden old-school classics of 2 Minutes To Midnight, The Trooper, Iron Maiden, The Number Of The Beast, Hallowed Be Thy Name and Running Free; En Vivo! glistens with the songs that put Iron Maiden at the very top of the Metal food chain. I cannot shake away those psyche-out ostrich bumps that grow on my arms and face, as I listen to these iconic Iron Maiden songs, on this live double CD.

The newest studio album from Maiden, The Final Frontier, is represented well on En Vivo! The intro of Satellite 15 ushers in The Final Frontier to start this stunning concert and I’ve realized once again why It’s my favorite song from that album. The vibes of Iron Maiden 2012 just combine so perfectly with those vibes of Iron Maiden’s past on En Vivo! and it’s terrifically addicting!

Legendary songs. An iconic Metal band. Excellence in vocals and musicianship. Spot-on production. The highest quality of live sound surrounds my senses. IRON MAIDEN. En Vivo! Honestly, what more can I say? There is more… buy this double CD of live Iron Maiden and play it F’n LOUD! Metal be thy name.

CRYSTAL VIPER – Polish Traditional Metal Act To Release New Album: Crimen Excepta

Posted in Heavy Metal, heavy metal albums, heavy metal news, metal music, Music, rock music, rock music news, traditional metal with tags , , , , , on April 13, 2012 by Metal Odyssey

One of Poland’s top contemporary Traditional Metal acts, CRYSTAL VIPER, are prepared to release Crimen Excepta on April 24th via AFM Records, their fourth full-length album to date.

Welcome to the world of CRYSTAL VIPER: a world full of Flying Vs, tube amps, leather and chains. The band’s powerful old-school sound runs deep with influences hailing from Mercyful Fate, Warlock and Iron Maiden, yet with a dark thrash edge born of Nifelheim persuasion at times, all fueled by frontwoman Marta Gabriel, her commanding vocals akin to Chastain’s Leather Leone with a touch of Doro Pesch.

The follow-up to 2010’s acclaimed Legends full-length, Crimen Excepta is a concept album about holy inquisition, black magic and witches, where fiction mixes with historical facts. Recorded with producer Bart Gabriel (Jack Starr’s Burning Starr, Sacred Steel, Mortician), Crimen Excepta is inarguably CRYSTAL VIPER‘s darkest and most aggressive material to date.

Bringing more of their personal Black and Death Metal influences to the table, even bringing in guest members such as Hell vocalist David Bower who appears on the album’s title track, as well as Vader’s Piotr “Peter” Wiwczarek to record a cover of the Vader classic “Tyrants Of Hell” for a bonus track to the album. Additionally, CRYSTAL VIPER recorded “Ghosts Of Sherwood”, a theme song for the forthcoming 3D cinema horror movie Robin Hood: Ghosts Of Sherwood, which also appears as a bonus track to the album.

As with previous CRYSTAL VIPER works, the cover art for Crimen Excepta was painted by legendary French artist Chris Moyen, known from his cooperation with acts such as Slayer, Trivium, Beherit, Blasphemy and more. View the cover art, a trailer for the new album to hear the opening track from the album, “Witch’s Mark,” AT THIS LOCATION.

Posted in classic metal, classic rock, Heavy Metal, heavy metal albums, heavy metal news, metal music, Music, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , , on April 13, 2012 by Metal Odyssey

Everyone has their own opinion, as to what they consider was/is the “greatest moment” of Heavy Metal history. I have mine and it is Quiet Riot creating and achieving the first #1 Heavy Metal album, Metal Health, to reign on the Billboard album charts. This was 1983 and I remember it all so vividly. To have a Heavy Metal band represent us Metalhead fans this way, was truly a profound moment… for me. No other Heavy Metal album before Metal Health went to #1. Amazing.

The  world knew then… that Heavy Metal was forever accessible within the mammoth antagonistic world known as… the mainstream. Yes, Heavy Metal has and will forever rule the underground, only Quiet Riot made certain that the mainstream and its album charts would never be the same again.

A short time ago, I contacted several world known musicians who are making a living by creating and playing our beloved Heavy Metal. I posed the same question to each musician: “What do you consider is/as the “greatest moment” in Heavy Metal history and why?” As you shall read below, their answers are all unique and makes for some downright fun Heavy Metal discussion!

Without question, these talented and admirable musicians are forever historically part of Heavy Metal. They live for Heavy Metal. They are continuously contributing to our beloved genre with blood, sweat and tears. I thank them all for it. I also thank each musician below for taking the time, from their busy schedules, to participate in this feature on Heavy Metal. Each and every one of ’em… ROCKS! Hell yes, they do.

Louis St. August of MASS –

“Very tough question but for me I would have to say it was when I started to see some of my favorite Rock Gods appear on Television. At ten years old I would sneak downstairs and stay up to one in the morning and watch “Don Kirshners Rock Hour” in the early seventies and catch the likes of Ted Nugent, T.Rex, Grand Funk Railroad, Brownsville Station and KISS.

Then it was The Midnight special with Black Oak Arkansas, Deep Purple, Cheap Trick and Aerosmith. The eighties brought us “Headbangers Ball” to MTV with Ratt, Motely Crue, Black Sabbath, Ozzy, Whitesnake, Dio, etc..

Great time and memories! Simply my favorite era in Heavy Metal History!”

Kev Moore of BC Sweet, Christie, Witch Cross

“The greatest “personal” moment for me in Metal history was hearing the opening bars of ‘Burn’ by Deep Purple for the first time in ’74 and the subsequent onslaught of the songs on that album. It had a huge effect on me. Very close to that would be the unbelievable ‘comeback’ by AC/DC following Bon Scott’s death. Who saw ‘Back in Black’ coming? Not me!”

AC Alexander of LIZZY BORDEN

“I would consider one of the greatest moments in Heavy Metal history to be the addition of distortion/overdrive to amplifiers. It is one of the underlying connections between every Metal/Rock band. Think about some of the biggest riffs ever written in this genre, how would they sound without it?”

Gordon Brown – (ex) IRON CLAW & Solo Artist

“I’ve pondered this for quite some time now and there are so many things I could say, however, there can be only one really and it’s the formation of Cream. They led the way for all those who wanted to open their musical minds and all of the bands that followed did exactly that.”

BOBBY K of 13 –

“Stone, Great question! Hmm… I gave it some serious thought and the one thing that keeps poppin in my head is the fact that Black Sabbath had the balls to record that…”Devils Chord” and I believe it is a diminished 5th minor chord as in the opening to the song Black Sabbath. That chord paved the way for Metal!”

From what I’m to understand, all the great composers ie…Bach, Brahms, Mozart, Beethoven avoided playing that chord in fear of being labeled a Heretic!  Hence we have what the Bible Thumpers call…The Devils Music…Horns Up!!   Oh yea….and MC5 for saying live “Kick out the jams Mother Fukkerz!”  Go figure, a Detroit Band pulled that one off!”

“Let’s say the 80s was the greatest moment because that’s when all of the great Metal legends were putting out awesome timeless records. I was born around that time and I wasn’t there, so I wish I was in a part of the scene to witness it.”

HAVOK – Point Of No Return – 4 Song/2 Video EP Blazes With A Thrash Metal Assailment

Posted in Heavy Metal, heavy metal albums, heavy metal news, metal music, Music, rock music, rock music news, Thrash Metal, thrash metal bands with tags , , , , , , on April 13, 2012 by Metal Odyssey

HAVOK – Releasing on May 22nd, 2012, on Candlelight Records, is the Point Of No Return EP from the Thrash Metal pack from Colorado, world known as HAVOK. This EP includes four songs and two music videos from Time Is Up, the band’s critically acclaimed Candlelight Records release from 2011. Two songs are brand new, along with two cover songs: (Sepultura) Arise and (Slayer) Postmortem/Raining Blood.

These young guns of Thrash Metal are one of the reasons why I feel confident about our beloved genre’s future. HAVOK plays their brand of Thrash Metal with abundant old school bite, while still sounding hellishly relevant. HAVOK admirably captures an aggressive sound with solid (not over-polished) production. These Thrashers come across with a commanding Metal presence, their astuteness with their instruments, coupled with the vocals of David Sanchez, allows their songs to sound so incredibly strong.

If you were blown away by the last full-length from HAVOK, you shall find this EP to be quite the Thrashing companion to that album. The intensity level that HAVOK plays at, on all four songs I’ve been consuming from this EP, is seriously riveting to my Metal senses. The title track alone is a Thrash Metal gemstone. Both Point Of No Return and From The Cradle To The Grave are guaranteed to ignite the adrenaline levels of any Thrash Metal connoisseur out there. I swear by that statement.

Just the thought of covering songs from superior Metal legends such as Slayer and (Classic) Sepultura makes me shudder. Timeless Thrash songs are just that. However, HAVOK rips and tears into Sepultura’s Arise and Slayer’s Post Mortem/Raining Blood. I admire the Thrash Metal allegiance that HAVOK has bestowed upon these classics and David Sanchez sings them with an air of reverence, in my Metal opinion.

A scorching listen and an absolute must buy is Point Of No Return from HAVOK. With the two videos as a bonus, this EP is yet another mandatory Metal recommendation that I am passing onto my fellow Metal brethren. Metal be thy name.

HAVOK:

David Sanchez – lead vocals/guitars

Jesse De Los Santos – bass/vocals

Pete Webber – drums

Reece Scruggs – lead guitar/vocals

ENTHRALL “Throes Of Fire” – Sophomore Album Showcases The Metal Strengths Of Vocalist/Multi-Instrumentalist Neil Rego

Posted in classic metal, Heavy Metal, heavy metal albums, heavy metal news, metal music, Music, Power Metal, progressive metal, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , , , on April 9, 2012 by Metal Odyssey

ENTHRALL – Originating from Bangalore, India and eventually being signed by Greece independent label METALFIGHTERS, founding member and multi-instrumentalist/vocalist Neil Rego has his solo project ENTHRALL causing quite the buzz within the worldwide Metal underground. The roots of ENTHRALL go back to 1995, when ENTHRALL was initially a unified band. Family commitments and the inability to relocate are the legitimate reasons as to why the remaining original members of ENTHRALL had to step aside.

With guest musicians appearing on his latest (second overall) ENTHRALL album, Neil Rego has given every indication that he is a well-rounded songwriter and lyricist, coupled with his undeniable and admirable proficiency as a vocalist and multi-instrumentalist. No Metal rock should be left unturned and ENTHRALL is one solid Metal rock worth discovering.

The influences of Classic Metal, Classic Rock, Progressive Rock/Metal and old school Speed Metal are all interwoven into a unique texture of sound on Throes Of Fire, courtesy of Neil’s musical vision. Neil’s clean vocals are married with his brand of Metal in such a smooth way that I cannot help myself liking what I hear, throughout Throes Of Fire. If I had to choose my favorite song, the title track keeps replaying in my mind.

Melodic from beginning to end and most essentially memorable is Throes Of Fire. With no flashy gimmicks of an over-produced product, Neil Rego has compiled these ten songs on this album to sound effectively efficient, in an early 80’s Classic Metal sort of way. Throes Of Fire has grown on me and has left an imprint of uniqueness upon my ears that is so ultimately important.

As a sophomore release from ENTHRALL, Neil Rego has shown that he can act upon his Metal vision and create an album that dominates on the melodic side of the spectrum, while knowing when to let loose the hard and heavy without crossing that fine line of filler territory. I recommend checking out ENTHRALL to any fan of Heavy Metal or even Hard Rock. There is a vast bounty of Metalheads out there, that should find Throes Of Fire to be an album worthy of their time. It’s been worth my Metal time. Metal be thy name.

CIRITH UNGOL “Servants Of Chaos” – 3 Disc Set Is A Mammoth Metal Value

Posted in classic metal, Heavy Metal, heavy metal albums, heavy metal news, metal music, Music, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , , on April 8, 2012 by Metal Odyssey

CIRITH UNGOL – The 2-CD/Bonus DVD of vintage CIRITH UNGOL, Servants Of Chaos, was released back on January 31st, 2012, via Metal Blade Records in North America. Servants Of Chaos was originally released (exclusively) in Europe, back in 2001. What an amazing package, which salutes this never to be forgotten Metal band from Ventura, California.

CIRITH UNGOL can easily be classified  as a pioneering and influential Metal band from the early 80’s. I highly recommend, to all Metalheads worldwide, these rare and live tracks, along with video footage of CIRITH UNGOL, to sink your Classic Metal craving senses into! Adding this Cirith Ungol 3 disc set to your Metal collection will serve you right.

I just bought Servants Of Chaos recently and it’s worth every penny. f.y.e. was selling it at a sale price for $9.99 (U.S.). That’s a stupendous price for 2 CD’s and 1 DVD!

The name Cirith Ungol is pronounced “kirith ungol” and is an Elvish phrase meaning “pass of the spider.”

Check out below: Cirith Ungol “I’m Alive” (Live) from the album “Servants of Chaos”. Recorded live at Wolf and Rissmiller’s Country Club on November 9th, 1984. Whoa and Metal be thy name.

SAVATAGE ‘Hall Of The Mountain King’ – Stone’s Metal Pick Of The Day

Posted in classic rock, Heavy Metal, heavy metal albums, heavy metal news, metal music, Music, progressive metal, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , , , , on April 6, 2012 by Metal Odyssey

SAVATAGE – I once owned Hall Of The Mountain King on vinyl. Years later, the vinyl is gone and I have it on CD. Yes, I prefer the vinyl. That’s besides the Metal point though, for Hall Of The Mountain King is such a classic of Metal classics, listening to it on a hissing cassette would still likely be okay by me.

When this album was released back in 1987, I was introduced to the title track first on MTV’s Headbangers Ball. The music video for this song was pretty cool, epic and entertaining, not the run-of-the-mill Heavy Metal video of the time. I found the title track to be undeniably progressive, compared to the Metal that Savatage was known for. This title track grew on me quickly and I ran out and bought the album… I was psyched.

From the artwork of Gary Smith to ALL ten songs, Hall Of The Mountain King had me hooked. I’ll say it again: a classic of classics. I’ll go as far by stating this album is a “top ten favorite of mine for all time” too. The more I listen to Hall Of The Mountain King, the more I love it. Picking a favorite song on this album is not easy for me. Strange Wings and The Price You Pay are two that get “repeat play” more often by me though.

Check out the classic – Hall Of The Mountain King music video below! Whoa!

The vocals of Jon Oliva on these songs are stuff of Metal legend. This amazing vocalist/musician never had to croon, continuously hit eye-popping high notes or try to sound like anyone else to be etched in my Metal senses so solidly. This is Jon Oliva and I swear he is one of the most underrated vocalists of all time, spanning any Rock or Metal genre. Speaking of the band itself: world-class musicians. Period.

The production of Paul O’Neill is superb and he brought in his vision for a future Savatage, one that none of us would have ever expected in our wildest Metal dreams. I remember the first time I listened to Prelude To Madness and I was awestruck. I thought, what is Savatage doing? This is Electric Light Orchestra gone Heavy Metal! It only made me more psyched out of my Metal mind, in part by being a huge fan of Electric Light Orchestra.

The overall sound, feel and vibe of Hall Of The Mountain King could never be duplicated, in my Metal opinion. If I had to recommend a Savatage album to someone unfamiliar with this band’s legacy, Hall Of The Mountain King would be it. My “Metal Pick Of The Day” or any day for that matter. Metal be thy name.

After the addition of Hansen to the group’s lineup in early 2011, UNISONIC continued the songwriting process for its debut release, incorporating Kai’s talent for writing great anthemic Rock songs into its existing material. Hardly Keeper Of The Seven Keys Part 3, the UNISONICcollective effortlessly fuse the many sides of heavy music they know and love. The band’s music is versatile and takes a broad approach to Heavy Rock without sacrificing the power and strong, catchy melodies that characterized the band members’ previous projects.
