Teaser Track + Studio Footage Posted

Finnish Death Metal legion KALMAH are pleased to unleash their seventh studio offering this June. Titled Seventh Swamphony, the follow-up to 2010’s critically lauded 12 Gauge release, was recorded at Tico-Tico Studios in Kemi, Finland, and features eight tracks, mixed and mastered at Sweden’s Fascination Street Studios by Jens Bogren (Opeth, Soilwork, Paradise Lost, et al).

Comments lead guitarist Antti Kokko: “This album marks a milestone in our careers. We have a new keyboard player [Veli-Matti Kananen], which has given a fresh edge to the music, and we are of course very satisfied with the new material. That is why we wanted to give the songs the best possible chance without compromise; we feel very lucky and privileged to have worked with Jens Bogren.”

KALMAH’s latest production showcases the Oulu outfit’s signature brand of frantic, yet Melodic Death Metal tempered here by a new-found epic mournfulness.

Check out epic pummel of fifth track “Windlake Tale” as well as studio footage at THIS LOCATION.

KALMAH (“From The Grave” in Karelian) will play Dark River Festival in Finland this Summer, with more festival and UK touring plans to be announced. Stay tuned for details.

Seventh Swamphony will be released in North America via Spinefarm Records this June. Further details to be announced in weeks to come.

SINISTER REALM – Reveal Artwork And Track Listing For “World of Evil”

Sinister Realm - World Of Evil - promo cover pic

Pennsylvania Traditional Metallists Sinister Realm are scheduled to release their third album World of Evil via Shadow Kingdom Records early this summer. Album artwork and track listing can be viewed below.

Commenting on the album artwork, bass player and founding member John Gaffney had this to say:  “I wanted to do something different from our past album covers which used photos and I really wanted it to embody the feel and mood of the songs. I was lucky to get in touch with a great upcoming artist from Portugal named Augusto Peixoto at Iron Doom Design and he was able to bring my vision for the album cover to life.”

With influences ranging from Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Black Sabbath, Candlemass and Dio, World of Evil will find the band moving in an even darker and more epic direction.  Comments Gaffney, “Many of the songs on the album focus on the evil that man brings to this world, with wars, lies and the dark future that sometimes seems ahead of us.”  Plans are being assembled for the band to hit the road later this year in support of the album.

In other news: Sinister Realm contributed their version of the Anvil classic Forged in Fire to the album Strong as Steel – A Tribute to Anvil, set for release on April 19th on Skol Records, the song can be heard below. John Gaffney had this to say about covering the Anvil classic, “Anvil is the sound of Metal, plain and simple. The jackhammer riffs and Robb’s pounding drums, it doesn’t get much cooler than that! Being a fan of darker sounding riffs and songs with cool drum parts “Forged in Fire” has always been one of my favorite Anvil songs, I hope we do it some justice and maybe even add an extra sinister edge to it….long live heavy metal and long live Anvil!

Check Out Forged In Fire Below!

Formed in 2009 by former Pale Divine bass player John Gaffney and current Pale Divine and current Beelzefuzz drummer Darin McCloskey, Sinister Realm released their 2nd album The Crystal Eye in late 2011.

BLACK SABBATH – “13” Cover Art Has Been Revealed… Blah And Yawn Sums It Up Best

Black Sabbath - 13 - promo cover pic - 2013

BLACK SABBATH – Make no mistake, I am highly anticipating the new studio album to be released from the forever legendary Black Sabbath, just like millions of other fans. I have no  doubt, the Heavy Metal from their forthcoming album 13 will be a delicacy to my Metal loving ears. My huge Metal question is: what the heck happened to the album artwork for 13?

Let’s be real here my fellow Metal brethren. This album artwork for 13 looks like sausage that caught on fire; while sitting too long on the outdoor grill. Give me a Metal break. This album signifies studio album #19 from a band that (quite frankly) began our Heavy Metal genre in the first place… and this is the (not so) prolific art that the fans get to see?

Granted, Black Sabbath have had their share of lineup changes over the decades and studio album #19 is without the legendary Bill Ward on drums; so it’s not like I was expecting a ground-breaking album cover that would rival anything that the ultra-talented Derek Riggs (of Iron Maiden fame) has ever accomplished. Still, I was hoping for something that would scream the prowess of Black Sabbath. Man, this album cover is lame.

It’s bad enough that this new Black Sabbath studio album is missing Bill Ward (or Vinny Appice for that matter); now the album cover is a bust. Um, no offense to Brad Wilk. Someone should have reminded whoever was in charge that the #13 has been so overused in the world of music and Pop-Culture that it basically has no spooky or mystical meaning at all anymore. Whoopie-doo.

Did “the powers that be” that oversaw the creation of this album cover really think that a seasoned Metalhead like myself would be blown away by burning sausage twisted into the #13? Alas, I’m certain that Tony Iommi, Geezer ButlerOzzy and Brad Wilk will save the day and 13 will Rock my face off. It’s the music that matters most. Metal be thy name.

KATAKLYSM – ALBUM TITLE ANNOUNCED!

Posted in Death Metal, death metal bands, Heavy Metal, heavy metal news, Metal, metal music, Music, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , , , on April 6, 2013 by Metal Odyssey

Kataklysm - large logo

Montreal based Death Metal powerhouse, KATAKLYSM, have been quietly working on new material for the past several months for their long-awaited follow-up to the highly successful Heaven’s Venom album.

“Well it’s been a seriously busy ride since our last album Heaven’s Venom was released over 3 years ago,” commented vocalist Maurizio Iacono. “From a successful world headlining run, to Ozzfest, into a recap of our 20 years as band with the Iron Will DVD. We’ve been writing in a very humble fashion behind the scenes for the last six months. It’s time to take KATAKLYSM to higher levels and dig deep into our capacities as musicians and songwriters. We know exactly what we have to do, that’s why we have taken our time and why we’ll be taking most of the Summer to complete the new album. The record will deal lyrically with mortality and the purpose of ones being on this earth. The moment we are born we start to die. It’s a sort of deal we make with life, and with that I title the new KATAKLYSM album Waiting for the End to Come.”

Waiting for the End to Come is tentatively scheduled for a late 2013 / early 2014 release. The album will be recorded by guitarist Jean Francois Dagenais and mixed by Zeuss (SUFFOCATION, HATEBREED, ARSIS)

As previously reported, KATAKLYSM guitarist and longtime producer Jean-François Dagenais (MALEVOLENT CREATION, MISERY INDEX, DESPISED ICON, EX DEO) will once again helm the new record. The band is scheduled to enter JFD studio in Montreal and Dallas in June/July.

ADRENALINE MOB “COVERTA” – COVER SONG EP = A 100% CONVINCING & POTENT METAL SLAP TO THE SENSES!

Posted in Hard Rock, hard rock albums, Heavy Metal, heavy metal albums, heavy metal news, Metal, metal music, Music, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , on April 5, 2013 by Metal Odyssey

Adrenaline Mob - Coverta - promo cover pic - 2013 - large

ADRENALINE MOB – I really don’t know where to begin in describing this new cover song EP from Adrenaline Mob. Okay, here I go! Coverta consists of 8 songs, spanning both the Classic Rock and Heavy Metal spectrums. Make no mistake, each song covered here is powered by Adrenaline Mob’s 100% convincing and potent Metal. The only thing I wish, is this EP contained another 20, 30 or 50 cover songs from this electrifying Metal supergroup. I’m not shitting around by stating that.

Russell Allen is an ultra incredible vocalist with a Metal resume only found in dreams. Mike Portnoy is (do I really have to remind y’all?) a world-class drummer. Mike Orlando is beyond terrific on guitar. Unreal. John Moyer on bass is so good it’s disturbing. (Get it? Disturbing?). I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: Adrenaline Mob sounds like they’ve been together since the mid 80’s. The songs flow along so smooth, with a non-stop vibe of excitement that it’s fantastically contagious!

Mike Orlando has countless shining moments on Coverta. As I listen to the Led Zeppelin classic The Lemon Song, I stand convinced this may very well be considered his multi-diamond studded performance. Russell Allen captures the emotion of every song he sings on Coverta, with a remarkable and keen sense as to how the lyrics are supposed to jump out at the listener and not just be sung.

Adrenaline Mob - publicity pic #1!

Badlands was a badass Heavy Metal band that should never be forgotten and Adrenaline Mob opens Coverta with such a spectacular cover of High Wire that it’s stunning to my Metal soul. The late Ray Gillen is resurrected through this song and Russell Allen can be blamed for that. Spectacular again.

I cannot express just how much I enjoy the cover of DIO’s Stand Up And Shout. I honestly can hear and  feel the reverence that Russell Allen has for the late Ronnie James Dio on this iconic song. The same can be said for Adrenaline Mob’s covers of Kill The King and The Mob Rules. There will never be another Ronnie James Dio; only Russell Allen vocally celebrates this eternal legend to a spine-tingling level. Once again, I’m not shitting around by stating that.

Adrenaline Mob - Live Promo Pic - 2013 - #1

If you wonder if Adrenaline Mob can cover The Doors (Break On Through) and Heart (Barracuda) then wonder no more. This supergroup can! It takes many special talents to musically introduce Rock classics such as these to Metal territory and Adrenaline Mob has done so in such an impressive way. The key here is that Adrenaline Mob and Russell Allen didn’t even attempt to go over-the-top with The Doors and Heart; they just gave the songs some Metal armor along with undeniable respect.

If you love Classic Rock and/or Metal, you’re going to find something to love about Coverta. Buy this EP and celebrate the bands and songs that Adrenaline Mob have covered. I know I’m celebrating. I also know Adrenaline Mob has kicked my Metal lovin’ ass with Coverta. Metal be thy name.

BAND JOINS DILLINGER ESCAPE PLAN FOR SPRING TOUR; DECIBEL X CONVERSE SHARE BEHIND-THE-SCENES VIDEO

_______________________________

Philadelphia – Royal Thunder and Pitchfork are giving fans a free download of the Atlanta band’s stirring acoustic rendition of “Black Water Vision” (http://pitchfork.com/reviews/tracks/15230-black-water-vision-acoustic/).

Recorded earlier this year, the acoustic version is a testament to the relatively new band’s musical prowess which was echoed by David Fricke (Rolling Stone) in his recent appraisal of the band’s SXSW performance: “heavy with the meaty, base elements of early-Seventies British blues in guitarist Josh Weaver’s harmonic-fuzz sustain and a striking vocal change-up in bassist Mlny Parsonz, whose robust projection and supple vibrato made me think of Jefferson Airplane’s Grace Slick at a lower, godless pitch.”

Decibel Magazine debuts an acoustic version of “Whispering World” as their July flexi disc. Royal Thunder recently participated in the ongoing Converse x Decibel Collaboration video series, where the quartet discusses the necessary sacrifices to be in a touring band (http://www.decibelmagazine.com/converse/converse-x-decibel-royal-thunder-do-quit-their-day-jobs/).

The Atlanta band released their debut album CVI in May 2012.  The release was called a “stunning breakthrough” by Spin, Revolver called the album “essential” listening and Decibel placed singer Mlny Parsonz on the cover of their inaugural women in Metal issue.  Royal Thunder closed out 2012 with multiple year-end/best of accolades including the Village Voice (#10 on Top Ten Metal Albums of 2012), Spin (#6 on 20 Best Metal Albums of 2012) and #11 on Revolver’s 20 Best Albums of the year.

Apr. 1, 2013, Philadelphia — Baroness’s first North American tour supporting their critically-acclaimed album, Yellow & Green, kicks off May 24 with a performance at Union Transfer in John Baizley’s adopted hometown of Philadelphia.”It’s hard to find the words to express how excited we are to announce this tour,” explained guitar player Pete Adams. “Seven months ago, who knew when it would be or even if we could get back on the road.  But here we are, picking right back up where we left off.  A heartfelt thanks to everyone’s unconditional love and support for us through, let’s hope, the hardest time this band will ever see.  We told you we’d be back so let’s do this thing!”Baizley confirmed that drummer Allen Blickle and bass player Matt Maggioni would not be touring with the band via a web posting on Mar. 25 (http://baronessmusic.com/update-3/), adding that the pair’s departure is “not sensational” and “do[es] not come with hard feelings.”  Baizley went on to add that the band has already found two musicians, Nick Jost (bass) and Sebastian Thomson (drums),  “who can approach our music with passion and vitality.

Baroness was sidelined when their tour bus plunged off a viaduct in the Bath area of England on Aug. 15, leaving the band and crew members with a variety of serious injuries. Yellow & Green had been released less than a month when the accident happened, and with just four shows remaining in the six-week trek before the band could return home to enjoy the praise that was being heaped upon the double-album.  Singer/guitar player Baizley suffered extensive injuries, which, at one point, clouded the future of both the band and his return to music.

_______________________________

In October, after an unprecedented outpouring from fans, peers and friends, Baizley posted an open letter in which he painfully recounted the horrific crash (http://baronessmusic.com/update-from-baroness/), ending the ten-paragraph note with a fierce determination to return to music and touring. By December, a clip of Baizley and Adams performing an acoustic rendition of “Stretchmarker” was posted on the Baroness website (http://baronessmusic.com/a-message-from-john-stretchmark-video/) with a brief note that started with “Simply put: it’s time to get back to it.”

With that, Baroness’s return to touring was not a matter of if but when. Adams and Baizley made their first public appearance with a performance in late January at Decibel Magazine’s 100th issue celebration in Philadelphia. Earlier this month, Baizley ventured to SXSW for a solo performance at Invisible Oranges/Brooklyn Vegan’s showcase as well as pair of art exhibits (Baizley’s art can be viewed at www.aperfectmonster.com).

Metal Odyssey To Change Music Coverage Format: Please Welcome “Pop Odyssey”

Official Metal Odyssey Press Release:

It’s been a wild and crazy ride these past four years at Metal Odyssey. With coverage and promotion of many Metal genres, along with Hard Rock, Classic Rock, Punk Rock and Alternative Rock in the mix, the Rockin’ journey has been more than memorable for me. I only hope the following news does not hurt the relationships I’ve built with so many Metal bands and Metal Buddies worldwide. I thank you all from the bottom of my (still) Metal lovin’ heart.

Now it’s time for a change. It’s not that I’ve grown tired of Metal. I live for Metal. I breathe Metal. This changeover is all about my wanting to break into the mainstream and be accepted for a change by “the big guys of the Pop Music world” like Rolling Stone magazine and the only way to do so is to cover and promote: Pop Music. I certainly hope and pray that ALL the loyal followers to Metal Odyssey and ALL my Metal brethren will understand and support what is happening here. Metal Odyssey is now… Pop Odyssey.

My dream has and always will be to one day cover the Grammy Awards at the red carpet, as the mainstream chart-toppers get out of their limousines for an evening of justified awards and champagne on ice. I need to experience this and “Metal Odyssey” will not take me there.

Believe me, this has all taken many weeks of soul searching. Change is a good thing. Without this change, life would become boring for me as a writer and lover of music. And…

Stryper - Group Promo Pic - #7 - 2013

Stryper, L to R: Robert Sweet (drums), Michael Sweet (lead vocals, guitar), Timothy Gaines (bass, vocals) and Oz Fox (guitar, vocals).

_____________________________________

As written by Michael Sweet and reported on the facebook of Stryper:

We start recording our 8th, full length album on Monday 4/1 and I’d like to start it the right way. I’d like to ask all of you to continue to pray for the band and the process of recording what we hope and pray will be our best and most powerful record to date. God is in control and He could take a band like us, a record like this, and do things that have never been done before. I’ve seen God work first hand and many things have happened over the years with Stryper that are nothing short of miraculous! I pray that this record will have the power, message and energy that all the others have had combined, so much so that it’s undeniable to anyone that hears it.

People ask all the time if our faith is still in tact, if we still believe, if we’re still a Christian band and the answer is a loud n’ clear – YES! More so than ever before.

We’re a little tired, beat up and exhausted from the past 30 years but our hearts desire is to continue spreading Gods love through the gifts, talents and abilities that He has blessed us with. God is leading the way, not any one of us.

God bless you for your undying support, belief and encouragement for all that we have done and all that we do.

This record can be our best record yet and we appreciate your prayers. We love you guys and could not have made it this far without you. Love and Respect to all of you, always!!!

Michael

BLACK STAR RIDERS: Reveal Album Artwork! Album Details And 2013 Festivals Revealed!

BLACK STAR RIDERS – ALL HELL BREAKS LOOSE

_________________________________

BLACK STAR RIDERS, the new band featuring THIN LIZZY members Ricky Warwick, Damon Johnson, Scott Gorham and Marco Mendoza together with drummer Jimmy DeGrasso (Alice Cooper / Megadeth), have announced All Hell Breaks Loose as the title of their debut album on Nuclear Blast Entertainment, which will be released in the UK on the 27th May 2013.

The artwork features a painting by Gil Elvgren (March 15, 1914 – February 29, 1980), the legendary US painter best known for his work on pin-up girls, advertising and illustration:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gil_Elvgren

The artworks ties directly to the origins of the album title. Ricky Warwick explains “I was watching a documentary about World War II bombers and saw the name painted on the side of one of the aircraft. The name just resonated with me and it seemed to encapsulate the turmoil that we, as a society, are currently experiencing. The past few years have been such a wild ride and now with the release of the album, it sounded like a bad-ass album title that summed up what BLACK STAR RIDERS is all about.”

Bound For Glory, the debut single from the album, saw its exclusive first play on Ken Bruce’s Radio 2 radio show on Thursday 21st March 2013. The song is now available to hear HERE!

Black Star Riders - Bound For Glory - Single Cover Pic

The single and album were produced & mixed by the legendary Kevin Shirley (Led Zeppelin, Iron Maiden, Aerosmith, Rush). The album will be released as a standard CD and also as a special edition digi-pak featuring a bonus track Right To Be Wrong and a “Making of” DVD.

A 24-minute compilation of behind-the-scenes video reports from the band’s studio time in Los Angeles can be viewed below:

Confirmed Festival Appearances For BLACK STAR RIDERS Include:

June 1st Hi Rock Festival – Inzell, Germany
June 2nd Hi Rock Festival – St. Goarshausen, Germany
June 8th Sweden Rock Festival – Solvesborg, Sweden
Nov. 29th Hard Rock Hell – N. Wales, U.K.

More tour dates to be announced shortly.

Metal Odyssey’s Easter (And) Bunny Album Suggestions! Plus: Non Suggestions Too!

Posted in classic rock, easter, Hard Rock, hard rock albums, Heavy Metal, holidays, Music, rock albums, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , , , on March 31, 2013 by Metal Odyssey

Rock On Easter - cover promo pic

Okay. It’s Easter Sunday. Happy Easter to ALL my Metal brethren who do celebrate this grand religious (and rabbit delivering candy) holiday. Above is one of 3 Easter (or bunny related) albums you’ll find here that I and the other 56 staff members of Metal Odyssey 100% suggest for your Rockin’ Easter listening pleasure. Heck, just look at (some of) the Rockin’ legends that are on that album! ‘Nuff said.

Below are Easter (or bunny related) albums that we either suggest, slightly suggest or don’t suggest at all for your Easter audio experience. Agree or disagree, this is just a semi-useless list of Easter and bunny (related) albums that have been compiled just for you. Enjoy and… Metal be thy name.

Bunny Lake - promo cover pic

Bunny Lake. Who is Bunny Lake? Can’t recommend what we don’t know. Whoa.

Bunny Hop - Dance Party - cover promo

Bunny Hop Dance Party. Cool. I guess it can be recommended for kids. Maybe.

Patti Smith Group - Easter - cover promo pic!

Patti Smith Group – Easter. Patti Smith is cool. Patti Smith is hands down a Rock legend. Her group is cool too. Only thing is, no one here at the Metal Odyssey headquarters has ever listened to it. Just don’t tell Patti Smith or her group that.

Jive Bunny - cover promo pic

Jive Bunny. The Album. Whatever. I’m sure, based on the way things are done, Jive Bunny will get elected into The Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame before KISS. Disgusting.

Parry Gripp - Easter Bunny In Space - promo cover

I don’t know who Parry Gripp is and obviously this person has an album or song out called: Easter Bunny In Space. Um, yup.

The Bunny The Bear - cover promo pic

The Bunny The Bear – If You Don’t Have Anything Nice To Say is another album that FINALLY can be suggested for your Easter listening experience! Fabulous album artwork! If you’re into Experimental/Electro/Hardcore/Rock then this is a band and album for you. Whoa.

Lovers and Crypts - Bunny Rabbit - promo cover

With a little research, it appears that Lovers And Crypts is electro-dance stuff. Obviously, out of the Metal Odyssey realm. Having a title of Bunny Rabbit must mean it’s an Easter song though. Right?

Helloween - Rabbit Don't Come Easy - promo cover pic

HELLOWEEN – Rabbit Don’t Come Easy = RECOMMEND! RECOMMEND! RECOMMEND! It’s HELLOWEEN and it’s METAL! Metal be thy name!

Teddy Rock - cover promo pic

Teddy Rock. Teddy Rock! Who is Teddy Rock? The name does Rock. Don’t get me wrong, this nifty list just has to end with The Easter Bunny Song. Maybe not. I’m sure toddlers and ABBA fans should dig it. Whoa.

HAVOK – Premiere New Video As They Continue Work On New Album

Denver Thrashers HAVOK have premiered their latest video for the song “From The Cradle To The Grave” from their 2012 EP, The Point Of No Return, via the band’s official Facebook page. The video, directed by Roy Warner, was filmed on location in Detroit during the band’s final tour of 2012 alongside Skeletonwitch. The premiere coincides with the band’s continued work on their anticipated Terry Date produced third full-length album.

Check out From The Cradle To The Grave below!

Discussing the song’s lyrical inspiration, vocalist/guitarist Dave Sanchez says, “‘From The Cradle To The Grave’ is about America’s first serial killer, H.H. Holmes. In the late 1800s, in Chicago, Holmes built a hotel specifically with murder in mind. It included doors that opened up to brick walls, staircases that lead to nowhere, and one-way rooms that once you entered, you never came out. He was a religious man and firmly believed that since he was born, the Devil was at his side. That being said, bang your head.”

HAVOK will hit the road next week, teaming with Goatwhore and The Casualties. The dates will feature new bassist Michael Joseph Leon. Sanchez notes, “as many people have already heard, we recently parted ways with bassist Jesse De Los Santos. It was a mutual split and we wish Jesse all the best. I’d like to thank Jesse for the four years of killing it in studio and on stage. With that being said, we’d like to introduce our new four-string monster, Mike Leon. Mike is a fantastic bassist and a veteran of the road from his years of touring with The Absence. We are very happy to have him on board.”

Leon comments: “I’m completely honored to be a part of such a well-oiled machine and to have the opportunity to play with these dudes is a dream come true! Not only is HAVOK one of my favorite new heavy metal bands out in the scene, but the guys in the band are a few of the best dudes I know! You can definitely look forward to us kickin’ lots of ass together this year, and for many years to come.”

HAVOK expect to complete all work on their new record in the coming weeks. Album information and special pre-order details will be announced shortly.

Spin premiered “Quicksand,” a new song from the 11-track album, earlier this week (http://www.spin.com/articles/kylesa-quicksand-ultraviolet-stream) describing the song “joins the melodies of ‘90s shoegaze with the churn of modern sludge.”

Ultraviolet pre-orders are available now via Season of Mist’s e-shop (http://e-shop.season-of-mist.com/en/predefined-search/37879).
