FireSky – An All Female Band You Must Know About, ‘Cause They’re Playing Some Serious Rockin’ Noize!

FireSky – Okay, to be upfront and honest, cause Stone can never tell a Metal lie, these four gals that call themselves FireSky… ROCKS! I’m very glad FireSky crossed my Metal path, this is a band that is ready for some Rock industry attention. After listening to their 5 song Erase The Enemy EP, (which was several times), I realized without hesitation that FireSky has “IT”. What is IT exactly, that FireSky has you’re asking? Song writing, vocals and these gals can play. FireSky has an attitude that comes through in their songs that screams: Rockin’ For Real. There’s some good Rockin’ vibes that emit from Erase The Enemy, Metal be thy name.

When you’re a DIY band and conscientious towards the song, word will travel fast and fans will follow. I’m listening to FireSky and they have created 5 melodically memorable songs, adding a contagious dose of Alt/Hard Rock flavor to their overall sound. It’s when my ears are introduced to a band like FireSky, that I wish I had the executive position at any record label to sign them. Instead, I can only pass along the great news that FireSky is out there, accomplishing and not just thinking about it, hungry for some Hard Rockin’ success.

If you are a fan of The Donnas, Joan Jett and the Blackhearts, Pink, Pat Benatar or The Bangles, you should get quite a Rockin’ thrill out of hearing the fresh and relevant Rock sound of FireSky.

Founding member, song writer and lead guitarist Shae Padilla recently told Metal Odyssey:

“Right now, FireSky is writing, rehearsing, playing locally here in California, and working on some touring opportunities! Its hard work being an independent band. But in our minds, if you have a dream you really believe in, you need to go for it. Even if you don’t “Make it”, you can be satisfied that you tried your hardest! And I’m happy to say, so far, so good for FireSky! We’ve made a lot of progress in the short time we’ve been a band, and it’s actually nice being the ones to make the decisions on the way our music sounds, and the way our band is presented to the public!

Shae elaborated on the title of her band’s EP, Erase The Enemy:

We decided to name it after the last track on the EP because it’s easy to remember and a good message. The song is about how often times, people are their own worst enemies and limit their potential. So you have to “Erase the enemy on the inside”. I love Anni’s (lead singer) lyrics! Definitely makes the writing process easy, when she’s right there coming up with interesting and meaningful lyrics!

When asked about a forthcoming full-length album being in the works, Shae responded:

“As far as a full length album goes, we’re hoping to have one out next year! We’re currently writing for it now, and also working on booking a tour so we can reach our fans wherever they may be!”

Where can fans buy your Erase The Enemy EP?

“You can buy our EP on iTunes by going to itunes.com/FireSky. OR if you like having a physical copy, you can go to our webstore and buy a copy! Just go to http://firesky.storenvy.com/“.

Erase The Enemy EP was released on iTunes on August 23rd, 2011.

AFTERLIFE PARADE – REBIRTH: A Celebration Of Loss, Through The Alternative Rock Genius Of Quinn Erwin

Posted in alternative rock, metal odyssey, Music, progressive rock, rock albums, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , , , , on September 29, 2011 by Metal Odyssey

AFTERLIFE PARADE REBIRTHQuinn Erwin is a singer, musician and songwriter from Nashville, Tennessee. He has a band that intertwines Alternative and Progressive Rock sounds with both soothing and upbeat vibes on Rebirth. Released on August 8th, 2011, Rebirth is an album that I am proud to review. The fact that Quinn’s vocals come across with heartfelt sincerity (to me), coupled with a soothing Rock coolness and Rebirth becomes an album that cannot be listened to on the fly or half sampled. Instead, I approached listening to Rebirth numerous times before considering what I would write about it, taking in each song and it’s message, both lyrically and musically.

Rebirth is the second in a two part concept album, with the companion project being titled: Death. Rebirth is an album that celebrates the loss of loved ones and Quinn Erwin set out to make a triumphant album of songs about death. Quinn “found himself surrounded by a series of losses in his own life and in the lives of those close to him” and felt “compelled by a desire to comfort the mourning”. I’ll have to make it quite clear here, the celebratory message about death that Quinn wanted to convey on Rebirth is astoundingly positive and moving.

On a personal level, I can’t resist relating to Rebirth, due to my losing my mother, sister and favorite aunt within the last several years and their leaving was just too close apart. Putting the theme of Rebirth aside, one mustn’t have to experience recent loss to enjoy the songs on this album. You can still play Rebirth loud while taking a long highway cruise or have this album playing during a party, it is that accessible. The open-air feeling that I take in from this album makes it all the more an enjoyable listen. Quinn obviously is astute in atmosphere of song.

Musically, the Rock of Afterlife Parade reminds me of U2, (only minus the annoying self-righteousness of the latter half of that iconic bands career). Quinn has seemed to capture the drive and hunger of a young Bono with his vocal approach, Black Woods, White Beach and the title track only accentuates my point here. My U2 comparisons may have you screaming that I’ve gone over the deep end here and I usually detest such comparisons myself. With that stated, Afterlife Parade is as original as German bratwurst, Quinn’s vocals are incredible, his songwriting is genius and his band plays exceptional.

This is an album that very well should catapult Quinn Erwin and Afterlife Parade to a level of impressive notoriety within the Rock music world. Rebirth has 8 songs that are as complete and artistically structured as any Grammy award-winning album in Rock Music today. Nothing on Rebirth comes across contrived or forced. Alternative Rock, Alt-Progressive Rock and old school “College Rock” fans are practically guaranteed to fall over for what Quinn Erwin has created here on Rebirth.

SALTY DOG – Every Dog Has Its Day: This Hard Rockin’ Album From 1990 Has Its Day On Metal Odyssey

Posted in Hard Rock, hard rock albums, Heavy Metal, heavy metal news, metal odyssey, Music, rock albums, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , , , , , on August 11, 2011 by Metal Odyssey

SALTY DOG – Going back to 1990, here is a band that I Rocked out to and was reminded about while rummaging through my “vintage” cassette collection late last night: Salty Dog. I remember buying the cassette for Every Dog Has Its Day instead of the CD due to my not having a CD player in my car. Cassette players in cars ruled the day back then. Heck, back in 1990, who did have a CD player in their car? No one in my crowd!

Holding onto the cassettes of my past enables me to go back in time and listen to albums that I never upgraded to CD. Many of my cassettes are not even available on CD either due to the “out-of-print” syndrome that seems to affect so many cool bands and albums of decades past. My apologies for often times overstating this annoying music industry fact.

Salty Dog may have been ahead of their time or time was just standing still for Hard Rock and Heavy Metal in 1990. Take your pick. The Rockin’ tenure for Salty Dog was 1986 to 1991, with Every Dog Has Its Day being their album of note. Looking back, 1990 was not a generous time for up and coming bands of Heavy Music. With that said, there were and always will be an audience of fans and supporters for the kind of hard-edged Rock and Roll Salty Dog created and played. I’m living proof and I know I’m not alone.

Every Dog Has Its Day was originally released on Geffen Records in 1990. That was a tough year and time period for Hard Rock and Heavy Metal bands, with so many record labels looking for the next Nirvana. I wonder out loud, just how popular this Salty Dog album would be if it were “newly” released today? Gambling with my guess, I’m leaning towards Every Dog Has Its Day as being a hit. Why not? The Bluesy, Hard Rockin’ sound of Salty Dog should be appealing to the Hard Rock, Arena Rock and Classic Rock fans of 2011.

This is an old school, party till it’s four in the morning album… that comes with a spinning back kick of Hard Rockin’ relevance. (To my ears anyways). I remember the song Come Along like it was yesterday and it’s easily my favorite on this album. I looked up the availability of Every Dog Has Its Day on Amazon.com and used copies are available for around $13 (U.S.). Trust me, these “used” CD prices for this title go even higher! However, new or unopened copies of this original CD fetch a far bigger price: upwards to around $100 (U.S.). A 2010 reissue on a label called Bad Reputation has the new price floating at the $30 level (U.S.).

For a one album band, Salty Dog is surely remembered as delivering some memorable Rockin’ goods. Check ’em out by picking up this CD. Only get it at a decent price!

THE TREWS – “HOPE & RUIN”: A Rock Album of Solid and Memorable Songs

Posted in alternative rock, alternative rock bands, Hard Rock, hard rock albums, metal odyssey, Music, rock albums, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , , , , on August 5, 2011 by Metal Odyssey

THE TREWS – One Rock album that I’ve been listening to consistently since it’s April 12th release date is Hope & Ruin from The Trews. Released on Bumstead Productions Ltd., this album is enriched with memorable melodies, standout vocal harmonies and Alternative stylings aplenty. With two gold records and ten top ten singles on their Rock resume, The Trews in my Rockin’ opinion are one of the best of bands imported from The Great White North. Based in Toronto, Canada, The Trews exemplify to me, just how grand a Rock album can sound when equal importance is given to lyrics and music.

Hope & Ruin makes it rather non difficult, when comparing The Trews to their Rock peers such as Counting Crows and Goo Goo Dolls. Song structures, lyrical diligence, tempos and degrees of Rock hardness all come into play when making such a comparison. The Trews just don’t bang-it-out on this album, they play the song and take you on an escalator of Rock, one that is aimed for being memorable and not run of the mill. There’s no question The Trews are accomplished artists and Hope & Ruin solidifies this, in my Rockin’ opinion.

You Gotta Let Me In is the mellow song on Hope & Ruin, with an acoustic listen that also takes advantage of soothing strings to compliment the soothing vocals of Colin MacDonald. Wether you listen to You Gotta Let Me In first or last, this song is a Folk Rock welcome mat from The Trews, which ultimately suggests this band’s admirable level of music appreciation. Upon hearing the guitar intro to The World I Know, the realization that The Trews are about to Rock-it-out is ever apparent. Latter days of The Alarm and early days of R.E.M. jump out at me, while The World I Know is cranked up, reminding me that yes, there is an old school Alternative Rock heaviness swirled about in this song.

Stay With Me is just an undisputed song of Rock excellence, both musically and lyrically. It’s easy for me to say this song would be a number one single on Billboard (if it were only 1985 all over again)… only real Rock music like this in 2011 takes a pounding from teen-Pop on those sacred charts. Rock fans with a pulse, know a number one single with relevance when they hear it and Stay With Me soars. The Trews compliment Stay With Me with yet another foot stomping and body jumping number called: People of the Deer. What this song substantiates, is, the true desire to move your body to Rock and Roll and let the vibes from the song take control.

Misery Loves Company is a short Hard Rock number (2:57) that flirts with a Punk fever tempo and bouncy bop to its beat. No, The Trews are not so diverse on this album that they lose their identity, their sound and semi-raw delivery is all there to be heard and recognized. Love Is The Real Thing encapsulates all good things about The Trews on Hope & Ruin: up-tempo, lyrical competence and a sensibility of some lean, blue-collar Rock, while hovering in and out with an Alternative appeal.

If You Wanna Start Again opens with delicate piano keys, only to become a guitar and chorus driven mover. Colin sings his Rockin’ heart out and John- Angus plays his guitar with unreal memorable licks on this song. The title track is yet another solid song on an already solid Rock album. With the tempo level being raised steadily as Hope & Ruin plays out, this song captivates with its unending Rock passion, from the vocals and backing vocals and all the way along its rhythmic beats. A fabulous title track to have, especially when it’s such an inspiring listen.

On Hope & Ruin, The Trews capture the sound, mood and vibes of Rock, Alternative Rock and Hard Rock with an efficiency that is easy to seize and enjoy. If you’re looking for an album that has been created with Rock discernment in mind, this is for you. Hope & Ruin pours with a sound of Rock that is not only real and sincere, it’s downright distinguished with its Rock stylings. Wether it’s a long drive, party time or you’re just chilling out, this is an album to turn to often for a cool dose of Rock.

John-Angus MacDonald – guitar

Sean Dalton – drums

Jack Syperek – bass

UFO Themes On Rock Album Covers: Through The Years

Posted in classic rock, classic rock albums, Hard Rock, hard rock albums, metal odyssey, movie soundtracks, Music, Punk rock, rock albums, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , , , , , , , , on July 21, 2011 by Metal Odyssey

(Misfits – Walk Among Us – 1982/Ruby/Slash Records)

UFO’s On Rock Album Covers – Over the decades, the image or images of UFO’s (call ’em spaceships if you prefer) have graced numerous Rock album covers. From Punk Rock to Progressive Rock, the always mysterious UFO makes for some fun and interesting album covers. Most of these album covers with a UFO theme, that I’ve decided to share with you, are without question classics, both in their album cover artwork and music within, in my Metal opinion.

Take a look at ’em and see just how unique each album cover is, with it’s portrayal of the UFO and notice some are much more detailed than others. If you know of a Rock album cover from the past or present with a UFO on it, feel free to share the info via a comment!

(Electric Light Orchestra – Out Of The Blue – 1977/Jet Records)

(Electric Light Orchestra – Ticket To The Moon/The Very Best Of Vol. 2 – 2008/Epic)

ELO has used their trademark UFO on many of their album covers over the decades. When ELO didn’t have their spaceship on an album cover, it never seemed right to me. Then again, an album cover doesn’t affect the music so I’m not totally devastated.

(Boston – Boston – 1976/Epic)

(Boston – Corporate America – 2002/Artemis)

Boston has always held onto their recognizable UFO theme, with each of their respective album’s artwork. This Boston album cover is really cool… heck, the UFO is shaped like a guitar!

(The Flaming Lips – U.F.O.S At The Zoo – 2007/WEA/Reprise)

(JourneyEscape – 1981/Columbia Records)

After all these years, this album cover to Journey – Escape is still an all-time favorite of mine for it’s amazing artwork. Okay, it looks like a flying beetle ship escaping from a big bubble… that’s a UFO to me.

(UFO – II/Space Rock/Flying – 1971/Beacon)

What would a list of Rock album covers with UFO’s on ’em be… without the legendary UFO being represented? Metal be thy name.

(Transformers – Dark Of The Moon – 2011/Warner Bros.)

Those look like two very unfriendly alien vehicles in the sky, on this new album cover for: Transformers Dark Of The Moon (soundtrack). Well, this Transformers Dark Of The Moon soundtrack brings us up to the present day, when it comes to seeing a UFO on an album cover. Until next time, keep your eyes peeled to the sky… and to those Rock album covers too!

A UFO ON A ROCK ALBUM COVER IS COOL. YEAH.

DEEP PURPLE – “MACHINE HEAD” A Once In A Lifetime Hard Rock Album

Posted in Album Review, classic hard rock, classic rock, Hard Rock, Heavy Metal, Music, rock albums, rock and roll, rock guitarists, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , , , , , on November 4, 2009 by Metal Odyssey

Deep Purple "Machine Head" small album picDeep Purple is the Hard Rock band, that deserves so much more respect and attention than what is normally given them. How often are the usual cast of characters brought up in Rock and Hard Rock conversations, articles and televised documentaries; you know the ones and these bands deserve their just due, praise and remembrance. Still, in the midst of Led Zeppelin, The Who, Black Sabbath, The Doors and of course, the Beatles… was Deep Purple. Deep Purple made some momentous and historical Rock Music of their own. Can I confidently say that Deep Purple was a band as commercially big as the other’s just mentioned? Of course no. I will state, that in my Metal opinion, Deep Purple was and always will be considered just as important of a contributor, to the history of Rock and Roll. Consistency in the form of personnel at the lead guitar and lead singer positions are two critical elements missing from the biography of Deep Purple. If this is what sets them apart from ever being inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, then that is pathetic foolishness on the part of that Cleveland, Ohio country club. With a mid 1980’s reunion, (1984 Perfect Strangers album), Deep Purple has been intact to this very day, with lineup changes being a normal course of their history.

Onward with my saluting Machine Head, the 1972 album from Deep Purple that I consider to be a once in a lifetime Hard Rock achievement. I mean this in the most sincerest of complimentary form. It is not as if Deep Purple never made a great album before or after Machine Head, it is that this album truly dictated a resonating Hard Rock sound that was absent in the mainstream of the early 1970’s. It’s so cliché to point out this Machine Head album as laying down the foundation for Heavy Metal. Instead, I like to insist on this album’s importance in quality Hard Rock songs, all seven to be exact. How can anyone refute the significance of Smoke On The Water? The ultra classic opening riff in this song from Ritchie Blackmore, is a study in non-technical guitar genius. Compared to today’s competitive and dueling nature of Metal guitarists, a slow down and reflection to some old school Machine Head just might cause an epiphany.

Oh, Ritchie Blackmore has his technical guitar skills without a Metal doubt, only his bluesy Rock roots stood out often enough to fuel the Deep Purple sound that set them apart from their peers. On Highway Star, the bluesy Hard Rock guitar is evident in its gleaming repetition. Space Truckin’ is as thunderous of a Hard Rock song mastering the blues as you will ever hear, I have never heard anything else like it in all the years I’ve been alive. Let’s not forget to applaud the vocals of Ian Gillan, probably the single most underrated lead singer in Hard Rock and Rock history combined. The opening yell, if you will, from Ian Gillan on Highway Star introduced to the world what Bruce Dickinson, (of Iron Maiden) and Geoff Tate, (of Queensryche) would be emulating years later… whether they knew it or not.

While Yes was introducing to the world in the early 70’s a progressive and futuristic sound through the hammond organ and keyboards, Deep Purple gave the reigns to Jon Lord to basically pound out chord sequences that dictated the hardness of their songs. Jon Lord was not looking to amaze anybody, he was looking to Rock your head off. Roger Glover on bass and Ian Paice on drums likewise, their rhythm section steered clear of the doom and gloom sound being raised in its infancy by Black Sabbath and to an extent, Iron Butterfly. Providing the undertow of harmony while establishing the trademark beats that this Machine Head album beheld, Roger Glover and Ian Paice were the Hard Rock glue that held Deep Purple together here.

I could not find it in myself, to proclaim Machine Head as the greatest Heavy Metal album of all time. I anoint Machine Head to be my greatest Hard Rock album of all time, to some it may sound like a consolation prize, instead I see this album as bigger than most music scholars may tend to ponder. I have searched high and low, for many, many, years to find another Hard Rock album filled with as much originality and straight forward Rock musicianship that sounds as dynamic as Machine Head. I am still searching… in the meantime, I declare that Machine Head is a once in a lifetime Hard Rock album.

8389326This is the original demo of Roxx Regime, from 1983, (“The Roxx Regime Demos”), before they became Stryper. (This CD was released on July 10, 2007). The songs are all excellent, with an unpolished, raw, under produced feel and spirited energy. (This is what really makes the Heavy Metal sound even better, in my Metal opinion). There are seven songs in all on this disc, including one drum solo. These tunes really thump, they have the early 80’s Heavy Metal/Hair Metal sound. “Honestly” is a ballad that really touches off tremendous emotion, the most mellow tune on this disc and a future hit for Stryper. “From Wrong to Right” and “Loud N Clear” are catchy tracks, with a definite early ’80’s Heavy Metal/Hair Metal vibe. “Tank” is a drum solo from Robert Sweet, nothing really fancy – cool to have in the mix of songs just the same. If you are already familiar with Stryper, you will hear and recognize the talented musicianship, a band in their Metal infancy, that would become a premier Christian Heavy Metal band of the 1980’s and beyond.

Listening to “The Roxx Regime Demos”, for me, is listening to a Heavy Metal band that obviously paid their dues and made some excellent, high-spirited music. Consistently melodic, with a great heavy groove, I cannot resist recommending this music to Hair Metal, 1980’s Heavy Metal and Christian Metal fans. This disc definitely puts me in a cheery mood, the lyrics and Heavy Metal gel together perfectly.

“The Roxx Regime Demos” has proved to be a quality purchase for me, plus it is quite the obscure Heavy Metal find as well. This is a definite must for all Stryper fans, fans of ’80’s Heavy Metal should find this to be quite a neat surprise. I did get an opportunity to see Stryper, live, back in the good ol’ ’80’s. It was at the West Hartford Ballroom, in West Hartford, Connecticut. Hurricane, a relatively low-key Heavy Metal band back then, opened up for Stryper that night. The show was cool, what you would come to expect from a Heavy Metal-Hair Metal-Christian Band that played loud. Stryper was in essence, doing the same thing musically that many of the Heavy Metal-Hair Metal bands of the ’80’s were doing… the only key difference was they were using inspirational/Christian lyrics and themes for their songs. I never was turned off by their religious glow, if anything, I was and still am into their brand of Heavy Metal music.

If I have said it once, I will say it a thousand times more – I am into bands that represent all of the Heavy Metal and Metal genres. Quite honestly, the only other Christian Metal Band that I ever saw live was a band called Bloodgood. (They were pretty good too, no pun intended). Bloodgood was an up and coming Christian Metal Band back in – you guessed it – the fired up ’80’s. I actually had an album from Bloodgood, to this day I do not know what happened to it. (I wish I still had it, then I could really blog about their music with some integrity). I do remember Bloodgood being quite cool live, with one song standing out called “The Messiah”.

In Metal summary, sure, Stryper has always been in the Metal Odyssey alliance – bands that I listen to and respect. In my Metal opinion, Stryper has carved out their place in Heavy Metal history, especially Christian Heavy Metal history. Here is an overview of what you will be looking at and/or holding if you get a copy of “The Roxx Regime Demos”: the liner notes in the CD are cool, with 4 pages of credits, a 1 page written background on “The Roxx Regime Demos”, 2 photos of Roxx Regime/Stryper, plus 1 page depicting Roxx Regime/Stryper concert posters & magazine covers from the 1980’s. Roxx Regime/Stryper is: Michael Sweet on lead vocals & guitar, Robert Sweet on drums, Oz Fox on vocals & guitar and Timothy Gaines on vocals & bass.
