TEXAS HIPPIE COALITION’S ‘PEACEMAKER’ MAKES ITS MARK

Posted in Hard Rock, hard rock albums, Heavy Metal, Music, rock music, rock music news, southern hard rock, southern rock with tags , , , , , , on August 23, 2012 by Metal Odyssey

Red Dirt Metal rockers Texas Hippie Coalition continue their string of success with the release of their incredible third studio album ‘Peacemaker’ (Carved Records). This week, the band made their highest Billboard debut at #4 on Billboard’s Heatseeker chart as well as #31 on Record Label Indie Current Albums and #20 on Current Hard Music Albums.

On the radio front, the band debuted at #15 on CMJ’s Loud Rock Chart and #39 on the Mediabase Active Rock Chart. So far, the band has garnered over 1,000 Media-base monitored spins reaching over 2.4 million listeners earning major-market airplay including WIIL/Chicago, WRIF/Detroit, KBPI/Denver and KUPD/Phoenix.

Meanwhile, THC is riding a swarm of rave reviews as critics embrace their most ambitious album to date. Loudwire exclaims they are “the bastard that spawned from a threesome between Monster Magnet, Willie Nelson and Pantera… What ‘Peacemaker’ does is takes that brand and elevates it to a more significant level. The band sounds tighter than ever, the guitar riffs are incredibly crushing to say the least and the lyrics are exactly what you’ve come to love and adore about this band.” About.com says “Peacemaker is furious witness to THC cranking through 11 tracks that declare what bad-ass outlaws they are…”

“Whether you want to call it “red dirt metal” [or]… “Southern fried Texas rock,” T.H.C. combines a little of everything for a rock/metal melting pot that garners fans from across the musical spectrum. – Metal Underground

Texas Hippie Coalition are currently on the road including a handful of dates opening for Lynyrd Skynyrd. Stay tuned for more tour dates.

LYNYRD SKYNYRD – To Perform During Republican National Convention

Posted in concerts, Hard Rock, hard rock bands, Music, rock concerts, rock music, rock music news, southern hard rock, southern rock with tags , , , , , on August 22, 2012 by Metal Odyssey

As reported on Lynyrd Skynyrd.com:

Rock & Roll Hall of Fame members Lynyrd Skynyrd are set to perform during events outside of the 2012 Republican National Convention in Tampa, Florida on Sunday, August 26 as part of the fundraising event Citizens Helping Heroes presents Southern Tribute IV Honoring America’s Heroes. The concert takes place at The American Action Network Pavilion at Liberty Plaza (corner of South Morgan & East Whiting Streets next to the Tampa Times Forum) and is open to paid sponsors and their guests. Lynyrd Skynyrd’s show launches the four-day event which also includes performances by Trace Adkins (8/28) and Kid Rock (8/29).

About Lynyrd Skynyrd:

With a catalog of over 60 albums, sales beyond 30 million worldwide and their beloved classic American Rock anthem “Sweet Home Alabama” having over two million downloaded ringtones, Rock & Roll Hall of Famers Lynyrd Skynyrd remains a cultural icon that appeals to all generations.

Led by core members Gary Rossington (guitar), Johnny Van Zant (vocals) and Rickey Medlocke (guitar), Lynyrd Skynyrd continues the tremendous legacy that began over 35 years ago in Jacksonville, Florida with their August 21, 2012 release, Last Of A Dyin’ Breed, a legacy that was halted for a decade after the 1977 plane crash that killed three band members, including Ronnie Van Zant and Steve Gaines. Since then, the band tragically lost Billy Powell, Ean Evans, Allen Collins, Leon Wilkeson and Huey Thomasson, yet they continue to forge ahead.

Rounding out the line-up is bass player Johnny Colt, an original member of the Black Crowes who recently joined the band, Mark “Sparky” Matejka on guitar, Peter Keys on keyboards, and Dale Krantz Rossington and Carol Chase as the Honkettes backing vocalists.

TEXAS HIPPIE COALITION ‘PEACEMAKER’ – A Paramount Hard & Heavy Rock Album; One You Should Be Required To Own

Posted in Hard Rock, hard rock albums, Heavy Metal, heavy metal albums, Music, rock music, rock music news, southern hard rock, southern rock with tags , , , , , , on August 21, 2012 by Metal Odyssey

TEXAS HIPPIE COALITION – Everybody get your hands up, I said reach for the sky! Why? Cause Big Dad Ritch says so… that’s why. When Big Dad Ritch aka The King Of Texas sings with his powerful lungs, I’m listening. You better believe it. The album featured here is Peacemaker and the band of outlaws who created it are famously known as Texas Hippie Coalition aka THC. Best you remember that, my Hard Rock and Metal brethren. Best you all do.

Released on Carved Records on August 14th, Peacemaker is without question in my Metal mind, a paramount Hard Rock album. If I could dictate Metal Marshall Law (and that would be very cool) I would make it a requirement that all of the worldwide Hard Rockin’ populace buy and play loud: Peacemaker. That’s it and there would be no F’n way around it either. Big Dad Ritch and his band have added that extra boost of Heavy Rockin’ Texan juju into this sophomore album of theirs and it’s an F’n thrill to experience.

THC is as American as homemade beer. Screw that apple pie crap. THC blends Southern Hard Rock with a classic Hard Rock nod, while brandishing plenty of Heavy Metal aptitude and this band summons the roots of their own Rock and Country Rock influence. THC exemplifies how this genre should be played and delivered into your ears, veins and Rock ‘N Roll soul. If the Southern Hard Rock torch has been handed down, then THC is the band that took such torch with patriotic and Rockin’ pride. I personally couldn’t think of a better band to lead the Southern Hard & Heavy Rock charge for our future generations.

Take a listen and look below to the Turn It Up music video and… TURN IT UP!

From Hands Up to Turn It Up, the level of Hard Rock authority is so stunning that it’s an F’n dreamland of kicking the shit out of your worries, anxieties and fears combined. You will feel personal power from listening to Peacemaker. You don’t need to read any epic Tony Robbins book to get personal power anymore; cause THC will administer it through Peacemaker. Go ahead, tell Tony that Stone said that too.

From Wicked to the title track, the uncompromising heaviness of THC continues to reign. With guitar muscle supplied by Wes Wallace, the leads, rhythm, riffs and mini-solos will leave you begging for mercy… as you continue to hit the replay button. John Exall (bass) and Timmy Braun (drums) provide more heavy Texas thunder than a raging coastal storm heading straight for Corpus Christi. Crash, boom, bang and I’m not fibbing about a damn thang.

Where Big Dad Ritch ignites this album (non-stop) with his prolific vocals; he also brings Peacemaker to a surprisingly softer and momentous closing as he sings… a ballad. With piano keys as an intro, the stage is set for Think Of Me to be that song to make all the gals cry. Man, Big Dad Ritch can croon (still) he sings verses in Think Of Me with his trademark branding iron vocals. Wes Wallace lays down the (Arena Rock style) licks on guitar, while John and Timmy keep the heavy beats raining down on this mid-tempo (heavy) ballad.

Don’t pass up on Peacemaker. This album is just too entertaining and too damn energized with all grand things about Heavy Rock ‘N Roll! THC is a band to reckon with in our Heavy Rock world. It’s like I say to everyone who cares to listen: You either join THC or get the hell out of their way, cause Big Dad Ritch and his band are here to stay. Metal be thy name.

LOVERBOY– With their trademark red leather pants, bandannas, big rock sound and high-energy live shows, LOVERBOY has sold more than 10 million albums, earning four multi-platinum plaques in the USA, including the four-million-selling Get Lucky, and a trio of double-platinum releases in their self-titled 1980 debut, 1983’s Keep It Up and 1985’s Lovin’ Every Minute of It.

LOVERBOY went on to win a still-record six Juno awards in 1982, and until a three-year sabbatical in 1989, were one of the Top 5 grossing touring acts in the world, performing in over 100 cities across the U.S. and Canada. Their success made them the first Canadian group ever to earn Columbia Records’ exclusive Crystal Glove Award, celebrating the sale of over five million albums outside their native country.

Aside from singer Mike Reno and guitarist Paul Dean, LOVERBOY still includes original members Doug Johnson on keyboards and Matt Frenette on drums, with Ken “Spider” Sinnaeve (a former member of Dean and Frenette’s pre-LOVERBOY band Streetheart), who replaced the late Scott Smith on bass, and continues a healthy touring schedule around the world.

LOVERBOY is now back once again, having reunited at Bryan Adams’ Vancouver studio The Warehouse, with their original engineer, legendary producer Bob Rock [Metallica, Aerosmith, The Cure, Bon Jovi], who worked under Bruce Fairbairn at the time. JOE WALSH “Analog Man” – Some Fun & Random Thoughts From Stone (Part Six)

Posted in classic rock, classic rock albums, guitarists, Hard Rock, hard rock albums, Music, rock and roll, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , , on August 18, 2012 by Metal Odyssey

Joe Walsh saw his eleventh studio album, Analog Man, released back on June 5th, 2012. Since then, I’ve thoroughly enjoyed this album’s songs from top to bottom; so much so, that I’ve written five Fun & Random Thoughts posts regarding this entertaining work. Now, you are reading the sixth such post!

Lyrically, Analog Man is filled with Joe’s real life experiences and Fishbone is one fine example. Fishbone is a funny song, only the story behind this song is not that humorous at all; at least to me it isn’t. Regardless, Joe Walsh has a unique way of turning a scary personal story into something “funny” to reflect upon. Joe Walsh explained the story behind this song in the liner notes of Analog Man. Here’s the story behind Fishbone, as I’ve kept it in fewest words as possible:

Joe’s wife had a fishbone (unfortunately) get stuck in her throat, while at a dinner party in Monte Carlo. She had to fly home to Los Angeles to have the fishbone removed from her throat. That poor woman. That’s scary stuff! I couldn’t imagine having any kind of bone getting stuck in my throat! Based on the lyrics of Fishbone, Joe’s wife obviously had a trying experience and eventual positive outcome. Thank God for that.

____________________________

Fishbone can get nasty, fishbone ain’t your friend – Joe Walsh

Trust me, the lyrics to Fishbone are funny and still I wince while listening to them. I just feel so bad for Joe’s wife having to go through such a terrible ordeal with a fishbone getting stuck in her throat. If this song has taught me any lessons, it’s you can’t take life for granted. Nor can you take life too seriously; especially when an outcome to a frightening experience or event turns out well. I’m sure if the outcome to this story was (gasp) something worse, then Joe Walsh would never have written such a lyrically funny song about it. I would hope so, anyway.

Musically, Fishbone is classic Joe Walsh. Semi-funky and loaded with guitar licks that ooze out from every crevice is Fishbone. Throw in some electronic artfulness on vocals for a second or two and Fishbone is a hidden gem of a song on Analog Man.

____________________________

Since we’re on the topic of Fishbone, here is a (topically related) album I’ve been reminded of:

Yes, that’s Fishbone’s seventh studio album titled: Still Stuck In Your Throat. This cool album was initially released in Europe, back in 2006. The Alt/Rock, Funk Metal and Ska Punk band known as… Fishbone. Whoever said the Rock Music world wasn’t intertwined in some mystical way should have their head examined for malfunction. Metal be thy name.

FOOLS FOR ROWAN “Who Killed Amanda Day?” – EP Flourishes And Skyrockets With Its Melodic & Modern Rock

Posted in alternative rock, Hard Rock, hard rock albums, melodic rock, modern rock, Music, rock albums, rock bands, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , , , on August 1, 2012 by Metal Odyssey

FOOLS FOR ROWAN – While the Modern Rock world jumps up and down for the likes of Daughtry, Shinedown, Cavo, Sick Puppies and Halestorm, (and rightfully so), there is another band that deserves the same treatment: Nashville, Tennessee’s Fools For Rowan. Here’s the slick groovy part: Fools For Rowan have even outshined their last full-length Twisted. Tied Up. Tangled. and I LOVE that album. Who Killed Amanda Day? is a whole new era for Fools For Rowan and they best strap themselves in for a high-speed Rockin’ road of continued success.

If an already seasoned and multi-talented band can maximize their songwriting and musicianship to a higher level than they were before; then Fools For Rowan is such a band. Yes, Fools For Rowan have recently opened for the legendary Evanescence, while also sharing the stage with the mega-famous Candlebox; only it’s a matter of time before Fools For Rowan will own the marquee on different shores and you’ll remember Stone told you so.

Led by the dynamic Erin Mullins on vocals, the melodic driven songs on Who Killed Amanda Day? are insanely memorable and relevant… and I’m an Extreme Metal loyalist who has been kidnapped by this band’s glowing Modern Rock tonality. Among my six favorite songs (on this 6 song EP) is Crave. Kelly Clarkson (my favorite AI winner ever) holds nothing over Erin Mullins when it comes to vocal resonance and prowess. Throughout Who Killed Amanda Day?, Erin steals the show and her band steals it right back… it’s incredible to hear.

____________________

The closing track is Leave, which has Erin dialing into some Stevie Nicks juju. A mellow and still dramatic vocal performance Erin gives on Leave. Back to Crave… Metal Odyssey’s Rock Song Of 2012? Just saying. I’m just enamored by Erin’s vocals and the band’s total musical output; for the simple reason I have never heard a hint of anything superficial from them on any of their songs… ever.

Refuge, Chameleon, and You Can’t Stop Me are Modern Rock charms that rise to the top; all three songs carrying their own flash and color of sonic appeal. The lead single, Killed A Man Today, is easily a song to narrow down as showcasing everything great about Fools For Rowan since the very beginning. There is a Rockin’ drive about this band that I hear and feel in their music which is without dispute; Killed A Man Today just solidifies this drive I’ve been hearing from Fools For Rowan.

Fools For Rowan has an ace in their box of talented tricks and it’s called Rockin’ passion. I hear it. I feel it. It flows through my veins. I’ve now told the world about it and I’m better off for it. Metal be thy name.

Who Killed Amanda Day? was released on July 3rd, 2012, via Lava Lamp Records. Who Killed Amanda Day? is available on iTunes and at Amazon.com.

BLOOD OF THE SUN – Signs With Listenable Records

Listenable Records is chuffed to announce the signing of 70’s-tinged U.S. Hard Rock band Blood Of The Sun. The band’s newest album. Burning on the Wings of Desire, is scheduled for a late-2012 release on Listenable Records. Get ready for a catchy overdose of vintage Hard Rock!

Blood Of The Sun was formed in 2002 by Henry Vasquez (Saint Vitus, Archie Bunker) on drums and Dave Gryder (Storm at Sunrise) on keyboards. Blood Of The Sun’s goal from the beginning has been to carry on the tradition of the Classic Rock style of the ’70’s, including highly respected seventies icons Derek St. Holmes from Ted Nugent and John ‘O Daniel and Rusty Burns from Point Blank.

In 2004, the band released their self-titled, first release on the independent brain ticket label. This initial line up included Las Crucis singer Mark Zamarron, Sub Oslo bassist Miguel Veliz, as well as Archie Bunker guitarists Jay Benfield and Rich Christopher.

For their 2007 sophomore release “In Blood We Rock”, personnel changes included Richard Hurley and Ty Thompkins on guitars and Henry Vasquez on vocals. In 2008, Death Ride was released with Derek St. Holmes from Ted Nugent on vocals as well as Erik Schmidt from REO Speed Dealer and Mike Doty from The House Harkonnen on guitars.

In addition to touring the states, the band toured Europe extensively in 2007, 2008 and 2009 and has subsequently been preparing their newest release “Burning on the Wings of Desire” which includes John O’Daniel and Rusty Burns from Point blank and Tony Reed (Stone Axe, Mos Generator).

JOE WALSH “Analog Man” – Some Fun & Random Thoughts From Stone (Part Five)

Rock ‘N Roll Photography Of Analog Man

JOE WALSH – Okay, as I’ve been thoroughly enjoying Joe Walsh’s new studio album Analog Man, something very, very funny finally dawned on me! This album cover idea for Analog Man has been done before! Just because an album cover idea has been done before, it doesn’t necessarily mean it was done better. No way. Not in this case.

I give the Rockin’ nod to this Analog Man cover; both for its photographic excellence and for the way the photographer (Andrew Macpherson) captured the mood of Joe Walsh. It’s all about capturing that Rock mystique in Rock photography and Andrew did just that. Commendable!

Now… for that other album cover (from the past) with the same idea… uh, oh…

At one time, Torben Enevoldsen was photographed this same way for his album: Heavy Persuasion. Torben must have asked his neighbor to stop mowing the lawn to take this picture of him. Big difference between the Analog Man album cover and Heavy Persuasion. Whoa. Check it out for yourself below:

Los Angeles, CA – Electrifying Rock band Fools For Rowan is back to hit fans with a second EP, Who Killed Amanda Day? debuting on iTunes on July 3rd and accompanied by a video for the lead single “Killed a Man Today.” The group has been touring nationwide while performing hits from their first release, Twisted. Tied Up. Tangled. and growing their loyal fan base. With an unquestionable fierce stage presence and musicality nothing short of top-notch, Fools For Rowan is vying to knock fans’ socks off with their most honest project to date.

Based in Nashville, Fools For Rowan is fronted by vocal powerhouse Erin Mullins with Jordan Cullen on drums, Andrew “Gib” Williams on bass, Ryan Nanney on rhythm guitar and Rachel Brandsness on lead guitar. Having played together for over three years, the fivesome’s high-caliber live performances have landed them gigs with industry heavy-hitters Evanescence, Halestorm, Trapt and Sick Puppies, among others.

The band’s first single “Burnt Around the Edges” received acclaim from college radio in the US and Canada, while the follow-up single “Dead” received spins on Top 40, college and modern rock radio and the video was featured on Fuse TV’s On-Demand. On the heels of a Kickstarter campaign where the band’s fans pledged to donate money towards the completion of Who Killed Amanda Day?, Fools For Rowan is ready to premiere the baby that fans personally helped conceive. “I think it’s just another cool way to get the fans even more involved in the music!” said Erin of the campaign.

Kicking down the doors of adversity, FFR has come back with a six-song compilation packed with authentic lyrics, powerful vocals and high-strung beats that stay true to Rock genres of the past and present. Who Killed Amanda Day?, a clever play on the title of the lead single, was produced by hit-makers and co-writers Shaye Smith (Jewel, Faith Hill, Kenny Chesney) and Ken Harrell (Stacie Orrico, Phil Everly of The Everly Brothers) and mixed by Beau Hill (Grammy winner – Ratt, Winger) and Rory Rositas. “Killed A Man Today,” a passionate story about breaking a lover’s heart and figuratively “killing” them, features enticing guitar riffs and infectious drums that dominate the track. According to Erin, the EP is “a great blend of soft Rock, Pop Rock, Hard Rock with real lyrics… it’s just fun, emotional, and real.”

Resembling an epic drama flick, the video for “Killed a Man Today” shows a young woman breaking up with her man via a hand-written note and ironically dies shortly after in a car crash. The video is currently playing on the band’s Youtube channel. With such a compelling track list and captivating video, “Fools For Fools” will be racing to the stands for another dose.

JOE WALSH – “Analog Man” – Some Fun & Random Thoughts From Stone (Part Four)

Joe Walsh celebrates his Rock ‘N Roll ties to Little Richard, through a long lost recording…

JOE WALSH – As I continue onward with my blabbing about Analog Man, the new studio album from the legendary Joe Walsh, I am finding myself getting more immersed in Rock ‘N Roll history once again. There’s so much more to Analog Man than just it containing 12 new songs from Joe Walsh. An autobiographical story is being told here by Joe Walsh and one key legend of Rock ‘N Roll is mentioned by him in the liner notes: Little Richard.

To me, Little Richard is synonymous with pioneering Rock ‘N Roll; an iconic figure and true ambassador of Rock ‘N Roll, to this very day. The reverence that Joe Walsh has for Little Richard is both a grand thing to read and realize; as he states his past and present association with Little Richard, within the liner notes of Analog Man, with admirable sincerity that obviously comes straight from his heart.

Little Richard also appears musically on Analog Man; Rockin’ on the piano with the James Gang as they were recorded live playing: But I Try. This historical Rock ‘N Roll moment took place sometime around 1970, at Cleveland Recording, in Cleveland, Ohio. The James Gang had played a couple of shows in the Midwest with Little Richard, at about this time. As Rock ‘N Roll surprises do happen, Joe Walsh had found this rare recording in an “old box of tapes” which makes this story all the more exciting to me. I can only imagine how many unreleased, fun and Rock historical songs that Joe Walsh may have stored away still!

But I Try is a retrospective snapshot into the Rockin’ world of the James Gang having a good time with Little Richard. This is a live song that spills over with it’s sincerity, while radiating a sound from a Rock ‘N Roll era that will forever be treasured and never duplicated. The lineup heard on But I Try is: Joe Walsh (guitar), Jimmy Fox (drums) and Dale Peters (bass), with of course, Little Richard. This version of But I Try will live on forever, since being rescued from “an old box of tapes”, courtesy of the legendary Joe Walsh.

JEFFERSON STARSHIP – Classic Rock Legends To Release Exclusive Live 4-CD Set ‘Tales From The Mothership’

The Paul Kantner Science Fiction Rock & Roll Motion Picture Show!

London, UK – “Roswell UFO Parade & Festival Hosts Jefferson Starship Sci-Fi Extravaganza” read the headlines for the annual July 3rd event that took place in Roswell, New Mexico in 2009. Jefferson Airplane founder Paul Kantner and his legendary band Jefferson Starship and special guests, which included original Grateful Dead keyboardist Tom Constanten, performed a one-of-a-kind sci-fi concert at Pearson Auditorium in Roswell in honor of the town’s famed annual parade. The group was also bestowed the honor of being the parade’s ‘Grand Martians’ that year and rode atop a special float especially built for them. The entire concert was filmed and recorded, and in addition to such iconic hits as “White Rabbit”, “Somebody To Love”, “Volunteers”, “Wooden Ships” recorded by its forebear Jefferson Airplane (the last two penned by Kantner), a special programme of science fiction themed compositions and select recordings were performed, some for the first time ever! Now, much to the excitement of Jefferson Starship fans across the globe UK’s Gonzo MultiMedia is releasing the entire concert in an extravagant 4-CD box set.

In 1971 the band’s first album (Paul Kantner’s first solo album actually), ‘Blows Against The Empire’ was also the first Rock music recording ever nominated for literary science fiction’s prestigious Hugo Award. In addition to Kantner, ‘Blows’ featured a ‘Who’s Who’ of Bay Area musicians including David Freiberg from Quicksilver Messenger Service. Freiberg and Kantner, later launched the ongoing Jefferson Starship, eventually writing the hit “Jane.” David rejoined the band full-time in 2005.

In 1991 the late great Rock impresario Bill Graham signed on to produce ‘Blows’ from a ‘scripted stage play concept’ co-written bu Paul Kantner and his (then) new manager Michael Gaiman, a lifelong fan. Sadly, Bill was killed in a helicopter crash and the idea was shelved until Sony Pictures pitched an ‘option’ for a ‘Blows’ motion picture in 1996. “That was a big year for sci-fi,” recalls Gaiman. Stemming from a shared interest in 1950s science fiction film and literature, Paul and Michael have worked together for nearly 25 years. In 2008 they co-produced (along with David Freiberg), ‘Jefferson’s Tree of Liberty,’ Jefferson Starship’s first studio recording in a decade. The album garnered stellar reviews worldwide. In 2009 Jefferson Starship headlined ‘The Heroes of Woodstock’, the authorized touring commemorative of the 1969 Woodstock Music & Arts Festival.

“On July 3rd, 2009, thanks to the Roswell UFO Festival Committee and Cool 94.9 Radio, we got to scratch that itch and assuage a long time desire to stage a mosh of Rock music and science fiction,” says Gaiman.

Along with Paul Kantner and David Frieberg, Jefferson Starship also features lead singer Cathy Richardson (who played Janis Joplin on Broadway in ‘Love, Janis’) and longtime band members Slick Aguilar, Chris Smith and Donny Baldwin. In addition to Grateful Dead’s Tom Constanten, special guests include Pete Sears (the band’s former bass & keyboard player on all their hits), Barry Sless (guitar & pedal steel with Phil Lesh & Friends), former lead vocalist Darby Gould and legendary folk artist Jack Taylor, one of Paul Kantner’s early musical influences.

Renegade Productions, the band’s frequent collaborator (‘Jefferson’s Tree of Liberty’ was the first album ever recorded in their new studio at the time) staged the production and provided custom sound, lighting and image projection. Karl Anderson of Global Recording Artists filmed the event dubbed ‘Tales From The Mothership,’ a joint production of The Roswell UFO Festival Committee and Jefferson Starship. “It’s not a documentary, not a ‘rockumentary’, not a ‘mockumentary’…it’s a ‘Spockumentary,” Gaiman quips.

Along with the entire concert from July 3, 2009, the 4-CD set also includes rehearsals from 6/27/2009 and the band’s soundcheck before the show.

WIG WAM “Wall Street” – Glam! Bam! Hot Damn! It’s Dazzling, Anti-Greed Rock ‘N Roll!

Posted in glam metal, glam rock, Hair Metal, Hard Rock, Heavy Metal, Music, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , , on June 26, 2012 by Metal Odyssey

WIG WAM – Winners of the Eurovision Song Contest with In My Dreams in 2005, touring heavily at home and internationally and achieving Gold and Platinum selling success, Norway’s WIG WAM is back at it again with a solid album of dazzling Rock ‘N Roll and it’s titled: Wall Street. This is WIG WAM Glam style. Wall Street was released on May 18th, via Frontiers Records. This is an album that brings the 80’s bright lights and color, while combining the spaciously loud atmosphere of yesteryear’s Arena Rock with Hair Metal attitude, style and sound.

The admirable accomplishment  here with Wall Street, is that WIG WAM ties in plenty of relevant vibes within their songs, steering away from being just another Glam tribute band to a decade long gone. Just when it seems like the world doesn’t need one more loud 80’s influenced Glam band, WIG WAM is reminding the masses that this genre isn’t going away and its music is being gobbled up by generations of fans. A miracle? Nope. Blame it on the spirit and mystique of Rock ‘N Roll.

Yes, WIG WAM carries their 80’s and early 90’s Glam/Hard Rock influences on their sleeves and good for them. WIG WAM have written songs with substance; lyrically in much better taste than Steel Panther and that’s always a plus with Stone. A Norwegian sliver-of-sound will undoubtedly be heard and felt from WIG WAM; Victory Is Sweet is just that song which summons up the spirited Hard Rockin’ sound from that part of the world… and it’s exhilarating to hear.

As with the title track and The Bigger The Better, these are songs that point out social excess when it comes to money, greed and materialistic wants. The album cover alone should be an indication that there will be a greed theme hidden within the lyrical content heard here. I’m not going to get political here, only I applaud WIG WAM for sounding out on the strive for excessive wealth; that same excessive wealth in which no one can take with ’em when they’re dead and buried anyways.

Teeny on guitar lays down more licks than my neighbors dog abby (when she is greeting anyone that goes near her). Glam on vocals is no Bret Michaels, Vince Neil or Steve “Sex” Summers. Nope. He’s Glam. It’s so refreshing to not hear a carbon-copy vocalist and even more refreshing when such vocalist like Glam is as damn good and cool to listen to. A talented bunch of Glam Rockers are these dudes from Norway. WIG WAM = (gulp) fun, fun, fun and they can surefire Rock the gilded palace down!

The album closer Things Money Can’t Buy is a heightened instrumental, getting its muscle from Teeny’s guitar. Just those sweet vibrations and tones alone tell the whole story here for me, it’s as if I can insert my own lyrics to this song and they would include family, friends, Metal Buddies and special, personal, memorable moments in time… all “things money can’t buy”.

69 CHAMBERS “Cause And Effect” Featuring Chrigel Glanzmann – Official Music Video Is Stone’s Metal Pick Of The Day!

Posted in Hard Rock, hard rock albums, Heavy Metal, heavy metal albums, Music, rock albums, rock music, rock music news, rock music videos with tags , , , , , , , on June 23, 2012 by Metal Odyssey

69 CHAMBERS – The soothingly Rockin’ and harmonic vocals of Nina Vetterli-Treml combine with the extreme vocals of Chrigel Glanzmann (of Eluveitie) in Cause And Effect. This combination of opposite ends of vocals proves to be a sensational and enduring song in my Metal world! Cause And Effect exemplifies excellence in the union of melodic and extreme; that these two opposites can truly co-exist in music… in Metal.

Having 69 Chambers being my “Metal Pick Of The Day” on Metal Odyssey is becoming quite commonplace, it seems. That’s what happens when a band pushes the creative envelope and kicks the shit out of the status quo of Heavy Music, like 69 Chambers has done so brilliantly with their new album Torque.

Take a look and loud listen below to Cause And Effect! Coupled with memorable lyrics, the entire structure of this song is so perfect. This is what Heavy Music in 2012 sounds like… and I’m on board for the ride with 69 Chambers. Metal be thy name.

* Torque was released on April 27th, 2012, via Massacre Records. This is a cutting edge record label that defines excellence in signing musical talent.

JOE WALSH “Analog Man” – Some Fun & Random Thoughts From Stone (Part Three)

Posted in classic rock, classic rock albums, Hard Rock, Music, rock and roll, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , , on June 23, 2012 by Metal Odyssey

Jeff Lynne And ELO Fever… I Can’t Shake It Free.

JOE WALSH – Admittedly, I had no clue Joe Walsh was releasing a new studio album until the day I walked into the CD aisle at my local Super Walmart. Sounds odd, huh? Not really that odd to me, for 90% of the press releases, PR people and bands I deal with are Metal affiliated; therefore the bulk of music news I take in on a daily basis is… Metal. Even when I surf the internet, I’m not going to stumble upon every album release from every genre that’s on the horizon. I’m not that cool.

It was a neat feeling though, finding Analog Man on its release day. If I could have, I would’ve skipped all the way to the check-out with my new Joe Walsh CD in-hand. Only thing is, the way things happen for Stone, I probably would have been gang tackled down to the ground by store security for acting like a weirdo. I bought Analog Man without hearing or sampling one song on it. The Rock ‘N Roll of Joe Walsh doesn’t need to be sampled by Stone to justify a purchase. No way, man.

Step in… Jeff Lynne:

When I returned to my car in the Super Walmart parking lot, I immediately took the plastic wrap off Analog Man and slapped that plastic disc into the CD player. As the title track began to play, I was reading the liner notes and scouring the track listing. It was simultaneous how this happened… I heard Jeff Lynne tones and felt Jeff Lynne vibes as Analog Man played. Within a hiccup, I noticed this sentence printed on the back cover of the CD digipak: “Produced By  Jeff Lynne And Joe Walsh”. I guess my ears and vibes were correct!

Any longtime visitor to Metal Odyssey knows by now, that I am a HUGE fan of Electric Light Orchestra. Always have been. Hell, I was an ELO fan before I was really introduced to Heavy Metal; with KISS being the only exception. Yes, it was (gulp) decades ago and not just two years ago. As years went by, I dove right into The Traveling Wilburys and couldn’t get enough of ’em. Did I have Jeff Lynne fever? Even the Jeff Lynne (co-produced) Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers Into The Great Wide Open, and George Harrison’s Cloud Nine both have that certain extra charm to my senses. Maybe it has always been ELO on my brain.

Throughout this entire Analog Man album, the musical imprint of Jeff Lynne is heard. Don’t get me wrong, Joe Walsh has his legendary Rockin’ imprint here too; this is a Joe Walsh album after all! Joe’s legendary vocals and signature guitar tones are clear-cut, dynamite and out-of-sight! (Whoa… that sounded kinda ’70’s didn’t it?). The ELO vibe and feel that is essentially Jeff Lynne comes sonically through on drums, percussions, guitars, bass, keyboards and backing vocals. Once again, this is still a bonafide Joe Walsh album of songs and not an ELO album. I’m only pointing out what I truly hear and absorb. Plus, I’m not complaining one micro bit.

After so many listens to Analog Man, I’ve come to the conclusion that Joe Walsh surely could have been a member of The Traveling Wilburys. Joe would have fit right in! Back in the day, I would have never connected the Rock ‘N Roll sound of Joe Walsh to Jeff Lynne’s (eventual) musical direction. Now that these two Rockin’ gentlemen have teamed up on Analog Man, I get it! As I reflect on the discography of Joe Walsh, the one song that keeps popping into my brain (that comes across with a healthy sliver of what Jeff Lynne creates) is All Of A Sudden from the 1991 album Ordinary Average Guy.

Joe Walsh – Ordinary Average Guy (1991 – Epic)
