Brooklyn Sludge Rock ensemble HULL will ring in the New Year with an appearance on The Learning Channel’s Cake Boss: The Next Great Baker this Monday, January 16, 2012 at 9:00PM EST. The Cake Boss: The Next Great Baker is a TLC series hosted by Buddy Valastro, the star of his own reality series, Cake Boss. The show features contestants participating in challenges that test their baking and decorating skills.

Commented guitarist/vocalist N. Palmirotto: “We received this email from a production manager from the TV show, The Next Great Baker, a Cake Boss spin-off, asking us if we would like to perform on the show. It was during the time that the Big Four were in town, and Megadeth were originally asked to perform for Mauro’s birthday. Mauro Castano is the Cake Boss’ right-hand man and brother-in-law, as he was always a big Metalhead back in the day, but Megadeth couldn’t do it for whatever reason. HULL was mentioned at a board meeting, and low and behold, they contacted us. We showed up in Hoboken on a rainy afternoon to a huge production. They had us set up and perform on top of two box trucks while the contestants displayed their best attempts at metal-themed birthday cakes. It was truly a one of a kind experience, and we are very much looking forward to Episode 8, Headbanging Bakers, on January 16th.”

HULL recently unleashed their Beyond The Lightless Sky opus, which continues to earn critical praise from fans and media alike. Released via The End Records, Beyond The Lightless Sky was co-produced by Brett Romnes, mixed by Billy Anderson (Sleep, Neurosis, Melvins, et al).and features guest appearances by vocalist Jarboe, keys/ambiance by Fade Kainer (Batillus/Jarboe/Inswarm ) and cello by Joe Merolla with artwork by Tamara Waite-Santibanez.

ZEBULON PIKE – Full Album Stream Of ‘Space Is The Corpse Of Time’ Available At The Obelisk

Minneapolis-based instrumental Prog/Doom goliaths ZEBULON PIKE unleashed their Space Is The Corpse Of Time full-length in 2011. Inspired in equal parts by heavy sounds of the ’70s (Mountain, Pentagram, Captain Beyond, early Judas Priest), Progressive Rock (King Crimson, Rush), and 20th century Classical (Bela Bartok, Arvo Part, and many others), the self-released, five-track offering is the band’s fourth and most ambitious work to date.

Dubbed “an epic feast of might and majesty” by Aquarius Records, ZEBULON PIKE churn an intriguing mixture of melodic melancholy, old-school guitar-isms, and Wagnerian dynamics that marks a mighty presence in the world of heavy music.

As a treat for those who’ve yet to witness the band’s unsung sonic sanctity, the fine folks at The Obelisk are currently streaming Space Is The Corpse Of Time in its entirety at THIS LOCATION.

CORONATUS ‘Terra Incognita’ – 5 Reasons Why You Should Get Into This Gothic Metal Album

Posted in gothic metal, gothic metal bands, Heavy Metal, heavy metal albums, heavy metal news, melodic metal, metal music, rock music, rock music news, symphonic metal with tags , , , , , , , , on January 11, 2012 by Metal Odyssey

CORONATUS – One of the best albums I’ve listened to from 2011 is Terra Incognita from Germany’s Gothic Metal Band: Coronatus. This is a band and album that can’t be overlooked by any diverse Metal fan. I would love to see Coronatus become a huge favorite among the Metal masses in North America, their entire sound and attention to detail with their music is impressive and lures me in song after song. Below are five reasons why you should consider adding Terra Incognita to your list of must have albums.

Reason #1: Coronatus is a band that obviously loves music, period. This is a Metal band, only Coronatus knows how to create music. They cross over many Metal genres with Terra Incognita. Yes, this band and album will appeal highly to Gothic Metal fans, yet Melodic, Symphonic and Traditional Metal fans can easily hear many elements on Terra Incognita that they can surely embrace.

Reason #2: On Terra Incognita, everything comes together so fine. The keyboard arrangements and orchestration belongs with and compliments so well the melodic guitar parts and heavy riffs. The union of melodic and heavy just sounds and feels incredibly genuine throughout this entire album.

Reason #3: Mareike Makosch (Alto Voice) and Lady Ada Flechtner (Rock Soprano) could easily steal the show on Terra Incognita, if not for the masterful totality of musicianship that this band excels with. However, I find my ears absorbing the vocals of these two beautiful voices and being left nearly spellbound. This is an album that I listen to time and again and still hear something new consistently.

Reason #4: The European sound and vibe from Coronatus is infectious. Regardless if the song is sung in German (Fernes Land) or English (Dead Man’s Tale), the end result is a definitive listen into just how passionate these two female vocalists are about the song. This passion for song that I hear is a universal language all its own.

Reason #5: There is never a moment where I want to skip over a song on Terra Incognita. The cumulative listen brings about a mood that is epic and a vibe that is celebratory. The cool aspect of listening to a band such as Coronatus and their newest gem Terra Incognita, is that I know I will hear a presentation that is all importantly memorable. Standing out and being original are qualities that this band easily bestows and conveys musically on Terra Incognita.

Yes, I highly recommend Terra Incognita. Coronatus receives a well deserved Metal bravo from me and I stand by this Metal sentiment.

Today, online music destination will be hosting the premiere of Truth Be Told (Exhale) from AUTUMN’s new album, Cold Comfort. The song is the 8th track on the record and contains some of the albums most poignant and moving melodies. The track can be heard now HERE.

Terrorizer Magazine describes Cold Comfort as “Haunting, lush gothic metal the Netherlands that drips with melody.” This is one that fans of Katatonia, The Gathering, etc. will not want to miss!

The title track, as well as the video for The Scarecrow, can be seen now at

Cold Comfort is the band’s fifth full-length effort and their third for Metal Blade Records. It offers a collection of striking songs blended into a diverse and yet surprisingly compact album, one that AUTUMN considers to be their most personal and meaningful to date.

AUTUMN needed not look far for a man to put at the helm with the right pioneering philosophy for the band to begin taking leaps: Erik-Jan Dodd, AUTUMN’s live sound engineer since the My New Time era, envisioned a more vintage approach for Cold Comfort. An experiment the band was all too eager to embrace, explains guitarist Mats van der Valk. “If there’s anyone who knows what we’re all about and more importantly: what we could potentially be all about, it’s E-J.”

AUTUMN guitarist Mats van der Valk comments on the band’s upcoming shows in Germany: “We’re well pleased that we’ll be setting foot on German soil again this February, bringing Cold Comfort to Berlin, Köln and Hamburg. We’ve grown fond of these cities during previous tours, have always been welcomed with heartfelt smiles by awesome audiences. We’re very much looking forward to meeting up with fans and friends, old and new, as we hit the stage for the first German shows of the Cold Comfort campaign!”

SKELETONWITCH ‘Forever Abomination’ – 5 Reasons Why You MUST Own This Extreme Metal Album

Posted in Extreme Metal, extreme music, Heavy Metal, heavy metal albums, heavy metal news, metal music, Music, rock music, rock music news, Thrash Metal, thrash metal albums with tags , , , , , , , on January 8, 2012 by Metal Odyssey

SKELETONWITCHForever Abomination is the fourth studio album from Ohio’s SKELETONWITCH and was released back on October 11th, 2011, on Prosthetic Records. I bought this release on CD and it has served me right. Forever Abomination has kicked my Metal ass, many times over. I’m not bullshitting either. Below are 5 reasons why you MUST buy Forever Abomination.

Reason #1: SKELETONWITCH seamlessly unites Thrash and Death Metal grooves resulting in a Metal sound that is Skeletelextreme.

Reason #2: Chance Garnette. His vocals are drenched with Black Metal tones and he sings on this album at his most venomous best yet. Chance has to have steel reinforced vocal cords. How else could he sing at such an optimum level of aggression?

Reason #3: If you’re looking to have your ears and senses galvanized, then rest assured, Forever Abomination will have you staring into space as you wonder what just happened to you. Yes, you will yearn for more.

Reason #4: Musicianship. Extreme Metal musicianship at that. This band plays so heavy and fast that it’s staggering. All the while, not once do the songs embody any muddled parts. The intricacies are all there and SKELETONWITCH keeps evolving as a band.

Reason #5: The dark lyrics throughout Forever Abomination are a powerhouse unto this album. Combine these lyrics, with the scathingly fierce atmosphere from the Extreme wall of sound that you’ll experience and it’s Metal mind-boggling.

Chance Garnette – vocals

Nate “N8 Feet Under” Garnette – guitar

Scott “Scunty D” Hedrick – guitar

EXHUMED – Announce: Grind Over Europe Tour 2012

Posted in Death Metal, Extreme Metal, extreme music, gore metal, goregrind, Heavy Metal, heavy metal albums, heavy metal news, metal music, Music, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , , , , , on January 8, 2012 by Metal Odyssey

Following their first ever trek through Brazil with Aborted, California Goregrind ministers EXHUMED will spray their blood overseas next month on the Grind Over Europe Tour 2012. Set to kick off on February 24 in Barcelona, Spain, the band will mercilessly tear through 16 cities. Speakers will blow, ears will bleed, villages will crumble. You have been warned. The band will be joined by label-mates Rotten Sound and Magrudergrind.

Comments vocalist/guitarist Matt Harvey: “We’re fully chuffed to have an opportunity to Grind Over Europe with a couple of our favorite bands: Rotten Sound and Magrudergrind! If you don’t like blastbeats, manic energy, beer, stage-diving, rhino charges, swinging thumbjumps or Scott Carlson bass grinds, do yourself a favor and stay the fuck home! This tour, in addition to being a screaming whirlwind holocaust, will single-handedly bring the phrase ‘play fast or die!’ back en vogue. We’re psyched to get to hit a few countries for the first time on this tour, as well as dust off some old and particularly short, fast, and loud numbers for the set. Our very first tour in ’97 was the Grind Over Europe II tour with Hemdale and Nyctophobic, so whoever said ‘you can’t go home again’ is obviously full of shit! Bring your studded vests, dreadlocks, Agathocles split EPs, and worn out old Napalm Death shirts on down to the show and let’s tear some shit apart! Cheers!”

EXHUMED w/ Aborted:

02/16/2012 Beco – Porto Alegre, RS

02/17/2012 Music Hall – Belo Horizonte, MG

02/18/2012 Hangar 110 – São Paulo, SP

03/10/2012 Barrak Music Club – Ostrava, Czech Rep

EXHUMED will be touring in support of All Guts, No Glory, issued earlier this year via Relapse Records. The band’s first new record in almost eight years offers up 11 slaughter-filled tracts of soul-raping, Grind-infused Death Metal that toppled an array of Year End lists including Decibel, Pitchfork,, MetalSucks and Skulls N Bones. Best Of The Rest Awards For 2011 – Now that the Metal Odyssey “Best Of 2011” lists are posted for Rock, Hard Rock and Metal albums, along with Hard Rock and Metal Songs respectively, I turn my attention to Metal Odyssey’s Best Of The Rest Awards. What exactly are the Best Of The Rest? Scroll down, read on and enjoy! Oh… and…. Metal be thy name.

(Metal Blade Records)

Tim Lambesis vocally made this Judas Priest classic his very own. Electric Eye being sung in Death Metal tones is, well, F’n fun to hear! As a Metal bonus, this band gives a 100% effort in giving Hellion / Electric Eye their deserved Classic Metal respect. To be street about it, As I Lay Dying kicks Metal ass with this classic intro and cover song.

(Metal Blade Records)

Choosing the best album cover art is, like music itself: subjective. There are many, many album covers from 2011 that I adore. I chose the PENTAGRAM and HAVOK album covers due to my staring at them for semi-long periods of time. Does that sound funny? I don’t think it’s funny. Okay, maybe a tad funny.

The Grim Reaper has always been the dark and sinister mascot of Metal. Mo Moussa captured that old school Metal look with this Last Rites art and I extend my Metal appreciation for that.

(Candlelight Records)

The skull on this macabre skeleton is chilling! The attention to detail is incredible on this HAVOK cover, with the lightning outside the window and other skeletons in the backdrop adding to the overall horror appeal. From what lead vocalist & guitarist David Sanchez told me, (during a Hard Rock Hideout interview), Halsey Swain actually put brush to canvas for this ultra-fabulous Time Is Up album cover. Old School strikes once again! Hey… if it wasn’t for Old School, there would be no new school.

(Nuclear Blast)

Whoa what a box set this is! A 16 page, full color, hardcover concert photo book. Two DVD’s, (1 concert & 1 documentary) with 16 pages of more incredible concert photos & cool liner notes. 1 live CD. It’s all DORO, The Queen of Heavy Metal, her amazing voice and her band!

This amazing DORO package features the celebration of her 25th Anniversary concert on December 13, 2008, at the ISS Dome in Düsseldorf, Germany, (Doro’s hometown). Pure quality, from beginning to end, with both the DVD’s and live CD. The concert photo book is so hard to put down. A timeless and priceless DORO box set for me.

When I received the assignment from Rob Rockitt, over at HARD ROCK HIDEOUT, to cover Queensrÿche live at The Crocodile Rock Cafe in Allentown, Pennsylvania… I was psyched out of my Metal mind! Metal Odyssey staff photographer Tom Coderre and I had a blast on this evening of Queensrÿche Metal.

Yes, this was my Best Metal Moment Of 2011, however, this was the Best Metal Moment Of My Life as well. To personally meet Geoff Tate and each member of Queensrÿche, back on August 2nd, 2011, made for Rock ‘N Roll dreams to come true. I personally thank each member of Queensrÿche for their being incredibly professional and polite. This band kicked ass onstage that night too! Metal be thy name they did.

I also thank Tom Coderre for being my Metal Buddy on that momentous evening and documenting so professionally this Queensrÿche concert and personal Metal moment. Thank you Rob Rockitt and Hard Rock Hideout for the golden opportunity to cover & meet the legendary Queensrÿche.
