AMON AMARTH “Deceiver Of The Gods” – Melodic Death Metal Kings Are Victors Once Again!

4.5 Out Of 5 METAL Fists!

AMON AMARTH – The ninth studio album, Deceiver Of The Gods, from Sweden’s Melodic Death Metal Kings, AMON AMARTH, was released on June 25th of this year, via Metal Blade Records. Metal victory has once again been achieved for AMON AMARTH! Solid songs, musicianship, vocals and lyrics are only just the beginning, with Deceiver Of The Gods. AMON AMARTH have quite possibly released one of their finest Metal works of their storied career.

AMON AMARTH have a catalog of stellar albums that are (rather) difficult to leap-frog, when I think of making comparisons within their discography. AMON AMARTH are undisputed Metal legends, therefore Deceiver Of The Gods (just) has to be grand. Right? It is! This new AMON AMARTH album, Deceiver Of The Gods, rages along with Melodic Death Metal majesty and is a sonic blast of what this band is so legendary for!

My favorite song on this album is Hel. Glory be to the Metal Gods, this song is impeccable! Hel has now become (quite honestly) my favorite AMON AMARTH song of all-time! Vocalist Johan Hegg and (former Candlemass) guest vocalist Messiah Marcolin compliment each other in eye-popping fashion; it’s Johan’s muscular growl meets Messiah’s falsetto.

The title track (and album opener) plus the closer Warriors Of The North are fist-pumping, headbanging and raise the horns to the sky epics! A well thought-out way of bookending the prime-rib delicacy of Metal that is Deceiver Of The Gods. Northern Mythology is once again embraced within the themes of this new AMON AMARTH album; with the Norse God, Loke, being the current example; however, this album is not devoted entirely on this legendary figure.

AMON AMARTH continuously raises their own bar of excellence and I couldn’t be more sincere and psyched about that. I highly recommend Deceiver Of The Gods to ALL my fellow Metal brethren and consider it as a bona-fide Top Ten contender for Metal Odyssey’s year-end Best Of 2013 list.

INTER ARMA – Enters The Studio To Construct New Recording For Relapse

With accolades from media outlets and fans alike still surging in on their sophomore LP, Sky Burial, following its release via Relapse in March, Richmond’s genre-destroying INTER ARMA is already back to work in the studio. For the next ten days, the band will be bunkered down in Madison, Tennessee-based Dark Art Studios with producer Mikey Allred — the same surroundings and setup that captured the monolithic Sky Burial LP — once again unifying their talents on a massive track, to also see release via Relapse.

“There’s no title yet, but it’s a forty-plus minute piece that was originally written during the summer of 2009 and only played out a few times” stated guitarist Trey Dalton on the track. “We’ll have some different people doing guest appearances (noise, synth, strings, vox, and more) as well. We’re trying to make the most completely off the wall shit yet.”

Further details on the recording will be released in the coming weeks upon completion. In the meantime, INTER ARMA has been confirmed to perform at a pair of late Summer stateside music festivals, including a set alongside Pig Destroyer, ASG, Sleep, Kurt Vile and more at this year’s massive Hopscotch Fest in Raleigh, North Carolina on September 5th, followed by a spot on Boomslang Festival in Lexington, Kentucky the weekend of September 20th with Blonde Redhead, Marnie Stern, Locrian, Grails, Chelsea Wolfe and a ton of others. They’ve also been confirmed to storm Holland in 2014 as part of the annual Roadburn Festival. Expect further tour actions to be announced shortly.

THOUGHT CHAMBER Sophomore Album “Psykerion” via InsideOutMusic – Reveal Cover Artwork!

Los Angeles, CA – Progressive Metallers THOUGHT CHAMBER are finally back with a new release, following up on their acclaimed debut album “Angular Perceptions” from 2007. The U.S. based group named their second album release “Psykerion” and it will be released on September 16th, 2013 in Europe and on October 1st, 2013 in North America via InsideOutMusic.

Next to guitarist and composer Michael Harris as well as vocalist Ted Leonard (also in Enchant, Spock’s Beard and Affector), THOUGHT CHAMBER’s ranks of skilled players now also feature Bill Jenkins (also in Enchant) on keyboards, Jeff Plant on bass and Mike Haid on drums.

THOUGHT CHAMBER’s mastermind Michael Harris checked in to comment about the new album as follows: “We’re all very excited about finally releasing ‘Psykerion’! A lot of changes have occurred in the band since our first record. Beyond Ted & I, we now have Mike Haid on drums, Jeff Plant on bass and Bill Jenkins on keyboards, who all did a stellar job and are all great guys on top of that, so our chemistry is perfect. ‘Psykerion’ is a concept record – a sci-fi human drama – musically yielding everything from prog-metal to jazz-fusion to acoustic.“

“Psykerion” contains 16 tracks / 64 minutes of superb true progressive metal with a technical sci-fi twist, likely to appeal to fans of Dream Theater, Yes, Rush or Planet X. The album’s cover artwork, which can be seen above, was designed by John E. Holland / MistyMountainGraphics.com. The album was recorded in various locations between 2012 and 2013 and finally mixed and mastered by Tom Size (Y&T, Aerosmith, Mr. Big, Enchant) at Tomland Studios, Pacheco, CA.

DIESTO – Portland, Oregon is home to DIESTO; a band that’s incredibly heavy, from every musical angle, note and lyric. Every instrument played in this band is played heavy as freaking hell. Stoner, Doom and even CLUTCH fans who’ve not heard DIESTO (yet) will revel in this band’s sound. Aw, hell, any Metal fan will have something to marvel at with DIESTO; this band is that good. DIESTO = Riff Fest.

DIESTO will be seeing their fifth album, For Water Or Blood, release on August 27th, via (the mighty) Eolian Empire. This new DIESTO album is without any Metal doubt in my Metal mind, one you have to put on your need list. I want to feature the very best on Metal Odyssey and give my fellow Metal brethren choices that are (to me) legit and badass. DIESTO fits that Metal criteria very well.

DIESTO pronounces the old school Doom in their songs (think early Black Sabbath) and makes it all sound so rich and powerful! This is an album for the backwoods bonfires, with kegs tapped and beer flowing abundantly, below a smoke-filled night sky. This is an album for the big cities too, DIESTO is a band you want your elitist neighbors to hear you playing LOUD so they don’t think of messing with you.

DIESTO are outstanding Metal musicians in my Metal world; listening to these dudes hammer away on this album is a great way to escape from the shit going on in the world right now. The sandpapered and Herculean vocals of (guitarist) Chris Dunn are simply awesome. For Water Or Blood was just the Metal remedy I needed this past week, to keep my Metal veins pumping and my Metal soul burning bright. Metal be thy name.

PROSPEKT – Sensory Records Confirms Pending Full-Length From British Quartet

Oxford, England-based quartet PROSPEKT has signed with progressive metal linchpin Sensory Records for the pending release of the band’s massive debut full-length.

Coalescing the fierce technicality of progressive metal with the symphonic elements of contemporary prog through brutal riffs, odd time-signatures, and majestic melodies, PROSPEKT’s sound is influenced by bands such as Dream Theater, Symphony X, Opeth and Circus Maximus, as well as film scores and fusion. The band’s intent is to create an intelligent and atmospheric mix of melodic, modern progressive metal, incorporating passionate high-range vocals, frenetic guitar work, haunting orchestration and solid grooves, every composition remaining interesting and original.

Formed in 2008 by guitarist Lee Luland and drummer Blake Richardson, PROSPEKT began as an experimental project, with the focus on complex instrumentation. Through incessant amounts of writing and rehearsing, the duo forged a sound that would epitomize their technical, melodic and progressive methodology. With the addition of bassist Phil Wicker and vocalist Matt Winchester in 2009, the band released their self-titled debut EP in March 2011 which was met with critical acclaim. In the Fall of that year Richard Marshall joined the band on keyboards and lead vocals (replacing Matt), adding a new dimension to the music. With his smooth, powerful voice the compositions became more epic and charismatic. Soon after the lineup shift PROSPEKT hit the studio and recorded their debut full-length, The Colourless Sunrise, and hired world-renowned producer Jens Bogren and Adam ‘Nolly’ Getgood of Periphery to mix and master the epic, sixty-five minute album.

The Colourless Sunrise is scheduled for October 2013 release via Sensory Records, a division of The Laser’s Edge. Further details will be released in the coming weeks.

ZUD “The Good, The Bad And The Damned” – Maine Metal Has Invaded!

ZUD – When I think of Thompson’s Point, Maine, the last thing I would think of is Black Metal or any Metal at all. I dunno, it’s Maine for crap sakes. I think of those moose crossing/warning signs I used to see when I did venture into that state as a printing salesman. Hey. That was a long time ago. I wore an embarrassing tie for that shit job. Alright, enough of my bullshit and onto ZUD; and this Black Metal meets 70’s Classic Rock band is from Thompson’s Point, Maine. Metal be thy name.

This Debut Album From ZUD Is Titled: The Good, The Bad And The Damned.

ZUD knows how to jam. ZUD can shred. ZUD can probably do any damn thing they want to do, way, way up there in Thompson’s Point, Maine. Portal To Infinity is a rather quick intro. It’s not that spooky to me. Then again, I’m the dude that brags about really seeing a spectre back in the late 80’s. No, I wasn’t drunk or high at that particular time. At 12:47, Skull Shaped Hell is one hell of a blackened jam! This song is so damn good that it seems like it’s only 4 minutes long to me.

Blood And Twilight at 8:23 long, continues the guitar driven and darkened good-times. Is it proper to use “good-times” within an album review that is Black Metal themed? Hey. At my age it’s good-times just going to buy a 6-pack of Yuengling. The Junction clocks in at 9:40. As you can see, these songs are long. However, these songs kick some blackened backwoods ass. Dendrite Fumes entertains at 9:15 long. There’s a ton of bang for your Metal buck with this ZUD album; and it’s underground Metal that’s saturated with quality song writing, musicianship and vocals.

With Black Metal vocals, Classic Rock intervals of guitar jamming, intense drumming and moments of Metal extremity with evil lyrics, ZUD is a band that I’m more than happy to embrace and welcome into my Metal world of loyalty. Shit. I used the word “happy” in this album review. Whatever. Y’all get my Metal point. ZUD is the real Metal deal and if you think that sounds cliché then go read some old copies of Reader’s Digest. Metal be thy Maine. Oops. I meant name.

It seems to me, since the legendary Dave Mustaine made public he is a man of Christian faith, that the insults, negative comments and bullshit, nonsensical rhetoric has been thrown his way like a tsunami. It’s a mob rules mentality when it comes to throwing stones at Dave Mustaine and Megadeth.

Gee, if Dave Mustaine announced himself as an atheist, would that make him more cool? Gee, if Dave Mustaine announced himself as a Satanist, would it make him more attractive and bitchin? If Dave Mustaine made it clear he was a die-hard liberal, would ALL fans and critics praise his every step in life? If Dave Mustaine was constantly being found passed out in the gutters of Hollywood Boulevard, would it make him a Metal hero?

Many fans, critics and those not in the know have labeled the new album from Megadeth, Super Collider, as a terrible and/or worst Megadeth album ever. Give me a fucking break. That’s totally insane. Have y’all ever listened to Metallica’s crap from the 90’s? Save for The Black Album, Metallica did everything they could to get on the good side of Rolling Stone magazine and the bullshit Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame, with their radio friendly and garbage pail albums from the 90’s.

Dave Mustaine has made his mistakes in life, there’s no doubt. He’s admitted it all in his fantastic and sincere 2011 biography. Gigantour has given bands a commercial lift when they needed it most, while keeping the Metal fires burning in the mainstream spotlight. Dave Mustaine is not a perfect human being; nor is Megadeth a perfect Metal band.

If y’all want to bitch and moan about something in the world of Metal, then bitch about how Sharon Osbourne has controlled the Black Sabbath and Ozzy Osbourne machines. Bitch and shit your pants about how The Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame is an anti-Metal good-ol-boys-club and ignores the facts that Judas Priest, Deep Purple, Rainbow, Yngwie Malmsteen, Iron Maiden, KISS, Motörhead, Scorpions and Helloween even exist.

Enough is enough. Dave Mustaine helped (in an ENORMOUS way) to pioneer the legacy of Metallica. The proof is right in front of you. For the Megadeth and Dave Mustaine haters out there, do your fucking Metal homework. Dave Mustaine and Megadeth are every bit the Thrash Metal pioneers that Metallica are. Dave Mustaine and his Megadeth band are not just Metal legends, they’re Metal icons. For those haters out there, show some fucking respect or get the hell out of our Metal family. Metal be thy name.

SOULFLY – REVEAL “SAVAGES” COVER ART; GUEST VOCALISTS COMMENT ON THEIR APPEARANCES!

Legendary Brazilian extreme metallers SOULFLY have revealed the cover art of the band’s forthcoming studio effort, Savages, which is set for release on October 4, 2013 via Nuclear Blast Entertainment.

The artwork was created by renowned artist Paul Stottler, who is best known for SACRED REICH’s legendary Surf Nicaragua cover.

Furthermore, main man and Metal legend, Max Cavalera, commented on the album:

“Recording Savages was an amazing experience for me. I was so excited to work with Terry Date, whom I consider to be one of the best producers of all time. He has done some great records and we have been in contact for awhile since he mixed three SOULFLY albums in the past. He came to see SOULFLY whenever we played in Seattle, and we finally made it work that he would be the producer for Savages. My teammates were awesome. Marc did some crazy guitar noises and we did a ‘Mars Part Two’ at the end of ‘El Comegente’ – it’s very LED ZEPPELIN influenced and Marc kicked some ass on it. I wrote ‘El Comegente’ with Tony Campos. It’s in Portuguese and Spanish and it’s about Vargas – a Venezuelan cannibal from the 80’s. He is the Hannibal Lecter of the Andes. Crazy shit! SATAN – On June 18th, 2013, NWOBHM legends, SATAN, returned with a new studio album: Life Sentence (Listenable Records). This sensational comeback album from SATAN is their first since 1987’s Suspended Sentence. SATAN has become one of the best comeback stories of 2013 and have solidly proved it to me with ALL ten songs on Life Sentence.

Each time I listen to this new SATAN album, I marvel at the quality of the musicianship, vocals and songs. Life Sentence is a complete SATAN package! Lyrically ominous and invitingly dark is this album; with haunting vibes that seems to cast a hypnotic Metal spell on my brain, which to me, makes SATAN so significant within this pioneering and sacred Metal genre that they helped bolster so many years ago.

SATAN delivers their retrospective Metal sound with authority; a sound that numerous newer bands are trying to recreate today. The NWOBHM was and forever will be an era of profound importance in Metal history; SATAN’s Life Sentence is a magnificent reminder of just that. With history aside, this new album from SATAN unleashes an enormous wave of relevancy; accentuating that their Metal sound is indeed timeless.

I can easily label Life Sentence as a guitar-driven album, with guitarists Steve Ramsey and Russ Tippins leaving me helpless in numerous momentary lapses of Metal awe. Vocalist Brian Ross sounds excellent, tapping into his melodic and falsetto strengths. Listening to Brian Ross take command of the song is unreal. Graeme English on bass and Sean Taylor on drums are a non-stop force of Metal thunder! Whoa.

Siege Mentality, Cenotaph, Testimony and the title track are just four out of ten kick-ass songs that I could carry on about for another five hundred or more words. My Metal brethren who’ve already gotten into Life Sentence should surely share in my Metal passion I’ve expressed here. For those others in my Metal family who’ve not yet picked up this new SATAN album… you absolutely must!! Life Sentence is without question, one of the finest Metal albums released in 2013.
