FEAR IS DEAD – Releases New Track

Posted in Heavy Metal with tags , , , on November 6, 2021 by Metal Odyssey

NYC’s FEAR IS DEAD have released their new single “Disciples of Death”. The song is the follow up to their last single “Assimilation” which was released earlier this year. The band’s cross of metal and hardcore will appeal to fans of BIOHAZARD, SICK OF IT ALL and more!

The band was born from and transcends the everyday struggle, exploring the darker, deeper, and sometimes grittier side of the human experience. Five EPs have been released to date-Fear Is Dead, Mourning ritual, Eleutherophobia, What Remains and Omnicidal. In 2019, following their last release, the band put together a short but well-received west coast tour. Launching from Vegas to California, then up the western seaboard to Seattle and back, making new fans and friends along the way

FEAR IS DEAD has shared the stage with notable local artists like REBELMATIC, SOLEMN VISION, and touring bands like Hed P.E. The group has also been featured in publications such as Metal Injection, Metal Underground.com, Aquarian Weekly, Tattoo.Com, and New Noise Magazine.

The guys are currently working on their first full-length LP to be released in 2022. The present lineup consists of the front-man and founder, Skila, and David English (guitarist for the last three EPs, and second senior member). Ish Roberts (drums) has spent nearly 3 years leading the group rhythmically. Lastly, FEAR IS DEAD welcomes their newest member, Tony Sofio (bass), into the fold as of 2021.

SARAH JEZEBEL DEVA – Releases “A Sign Of Sublime” (Redux)

Posted in Heavy Metal with tags , , , , , , on November 6, 2021 by Metal Odyssey

Legendary vocalist SARAH JEZEBEL DEVA has revealed her song “A Sign Of Sublime (Redux)”. The track is a re-working of her classic song from her debut solo album and features guest appearances from Lindsay Schoolcraft (Juno nominated singer/Songwriter) and Ghul (MAYHEM).

Sarah comments:

“I’ve made it no secret that most of us involved with the out come of the album “A Sign Of Sublime” was a total disappointment, I’m not talking the orchestral tracks as 2 of them were off of the demo that Chris Rehn and I did before we formed Angtoria. I’m talking about the metal tracks. I never wanted to be just a backing singer, it was never the plan, so when you get a record deal under your own name, it’s a huge thing. To spare you the details, it ruined what dreams I had before the solo career started. I remember Dan, the guy mixing it saying to me outside the studio how over edited everything was and he literally couldn’t do a thing to save the album, basically you can’t roll a dog turd in icing sugar in the hope it will taste good. I’ve never seen a penny from the album, never seen a sales or streaming statement and the whole experience leaves a bitter taste in ya mouth. The guitarist who also had a dream, well I couldn’t explain what had happened as I knew he wouldn’t believe me and we stopped talking, but years later, trying to close the door on the album and company that destroyed it, we decided to re record the title track and show people how it should have been, how it should have sounded. Since meeting Dan, we have become really good friends, he has been by my side since he attempted to mix that album, so without him, this track wouldn’t haven’t happened. I’ve had so many good people, friends, get involved or give their blessing for this re recording, I am honoured and extremely lucky. We may record Lady Tyranny early next year also, but once that’s done, the door is closed. I hope people love it, but I do ask not to stream or buy the original album, go to YouTube and check it if you must. Hope this all makes sense and thank you.”

EXHORDER – New Orleans Thrash Icons To Kick Off US Headlining Tour Later This Month; Band To Perform Legendary ‘Slaughter In The Vatican’ Debut In Full

Posted in Heavy Metal with tags , , , , , , on November 3, 2021 by Metal Odyssey

New Orleans thrash icons EXHORDER will return to the road later this month on a US headlining tour. The journey runs from November 24th through December 19th and will see the band performing their classic 1990 debut, Slaughter In The Vatican, in its entirety!

Comments vocalist Kyle Thomas: “It seems kind of crazy that EXHORDER is finally doing a proper US tour for Slaughter In The Vatican in 2021, thirty-one years after its release. The opportunities and possibilities didn’t line up for us back in the day, so we’ve decided to take this show on the road and give everyone a proper tribute to this landmark album. As a band, we are truly grateful and honored to be able to do this, and for me it’s simply amazing. Almost like watching one of your children grow up and succeed in life! Without overstating the obvious too much, it’s going to be immeasurably exciting to once again take the show on the road after more than a year and a half on hold due to the pandemic. May we all find good health in the upcoming months to make the shows on this tour as exciting to witness as it is for us to perform them! We look forward to rolling with our support acts Take Offense, Extinction A.D., and Plague Years as well. See you all soon, can’t wait!”

Formed in 1986, EXHORDER’s thirty-five-year long (and counting) journey has proven exciting, yet tumultuous, fraught with euphoric peaks and crippling valleys throughout its existence. The band recorded their controversial classic demo, Slaughter In The Vatican, in 1987 and from there, the international attention the band drew via the world of underground tape-trading was indisputable. As fate would have it however, the band broke up for the first time in early 1988 due to internal struggles. A reformation ensued later that year and EXHORDER set out once again to pursue its vision.

The band soon signed with Mean Machine Records but the label dissolved before the band’s debut could be completed. The contract was subsequently purchased by R/C Records, a subsidiary of Roadracer/Roadrunner Records in the United States. With a small recording budget and repair to previous sessions, Slaughter In The Vatican was completed and released with the assistance of legendary producer Scott Burns in 1990, nearly five years after much of the material was written.

Following a series of lineup shifts, a second full-length, and multiple hiatuses, the band finally relaunched itself in 2017. Legends grow over time, and new generations emerge to keep them alive. With the demand of EXHORDER at an all-time high, the band set out once again to finish the job they had not yet completed. The band played a series of club shows and festivals to immense interest. A deal with the Nuclear Blast label was quickly inked and in 2019 the band released Mourn The Southern Skies. Rave reviews from critics and fans saw the band’s popularity increase yet again, and the band set out on the road to packed venues and large festivals.

In March of 2020, a direct support tour slot in front of Overkill allowed the band to showcase themselves at the level they had always strived to reach. Live reviews of the tour and audience reaction proved that the hunger for this band by the public continues to grow.

Slaughter In The Vatican, which was recently inducted into Decibel Magazine’s coveted Hall Of Fame series and re-released on vinyl, remains a crucial release in the annals of metal.

Decibel hailed the band’s “precision groove and whip-smart thrash,” Invisible Oranges lauded a, “groundbreaking and incredibly heavy slab of groove-infused thrash and speed metal,” Sputnik Music commended, “an album which helped to kick-start the groove metal revolution, while staying true to its thrash roots,” while AllMusic observed the album’s, “death metal-style double kick drums, chugging guitar riffs played at both slow and blistering tempos, and…the gruff but very expressive lead vocals of frontman Kyle Thomas,” After a seventeen month halt in touring due to the pandemic, EXHORDER put on a legendary performance of Slaughter In The Vatican in its entirety at Psycho Las Vegas 2021 and are fully ready to return to the stage with the record that started it all.

LEATHÜRBITCH – Signed To Shadow Kingdom Records

Posted in Heavy Metal with tags , , , , , , on November 3, 2021 by Metal Odyssey

SHADOW KINGDOM RECORDS is proud to announce the signing of LEATHÜRBITCH. The first fruit of this union will be the band’s highly anticipated second album, to be released in 2022.

Formed in 2015 in Portland, Oregon, LEATHÜRBITCH have quickly ascended the underground ranks with the release of their self-titled debut EP in 2018 and successive debut album, Into the Night, a year later via High Roller Records. With the sound of early ‘80s Sunset Strip AND first Metal Massacre comps as their foundation, LEATHÜRBITCH have created an addicting blend of vicious sleaze and propulsive speed, all done with power, poignancy, and above all, a larger-than-life charisma.

Think early Ratt, W.A.S.P., and even Mötley Crüe meets equally early Jag Panzer, Bitch, and Armored Saint – and SHADOW KINGDOM will be bringing that to stereos soon with the band’s second album!

JESTR – To Release New Album

Posted in Heavy Metal with tags , , , , , on November 2, 2021 by Metal Odyssey

Alternative hard rock quartet JESTR, will release their debut album The Dead & The Riches on Feb 11th 2021. The band draws inspiration from mythology, the paranormal along with any curious manifestations or bizarre tales. Based out of Lafayette, Louisiana, JESTR was initially devised as a solo project by Brett Bradley at the end of 2019, the name JESTR comes from a strong spiritual experience Brett had. Recording for the debut album began in late 2020, with the band’s current line-up materialising in spring of 2021.

“We are absolutely overjoyed to share with you all our debut LP The Dead & Riches. This album has been one heck of an experience and we cannot wait for y’all to take the driver’s seat with this record. We hope you have as good a time listening to it as we did making it!”

Ranging from intimate vocals with acoustic guitar accompaniment, through to heavy distortion and powerful rhythms, The Dead and Riches is a dynamic album that isn’t afraid to have some fun. “Ghost of You” alludes to alt rock of the early noughties while “Birth of a Charlatan” delivers a darkly humorous impact. Throughout the record, instrumental and vocal melodies are artfully crafted into experimental harmonies and high energy levels elevate JESTR’s sound.

JESTR aren’t afraid to explore the unfavourable aspects of life, but make sure to come out the other side laughing. The energetic outfit have aptly portrayed some hauntingly dark themes with a humorous, light-hearted twist. The Dead and Riches is an unexpected and highly enjoyable album to experience.

SCORPIONS – ‘Big City Nights’ – A Look At A Terrific Greatest Hits CD From 1998

Posted in classic rock, Hard Rock, Heavy Metal, Metal, Music, news, world news with tags , , , , , , , , , on May 27, 2020 by Metal Odyssey

Many years ago, I bought this cool Scorpions CD: Big City Nights (Rebound Records). I remember buying it new and it was pretty cheap; the price was around $5 or so. I believe it was Walmart that had this CD too; sometimes my memory amazes me, despite not remembering what I ate for dinner yesterday. Truth. Here is a one-sentence rant before I continue: Scorpions should be inducted into The Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame!!

Okay, I shall continue onward. I love this band. Every era of Scorpions I love. I was fortunate to see them headline the M3 Rock Festival back in 2010, with my great/best Metal Buddy Scott Coverdale. What a fun time. Just about every song on this Big City Nights compilation was performed by the Scorpions at that M3 Rock Festival; at least to the best of my (once again) amazing memory. Chuckle, chuckle. I’ve presented the tracklist for this CD below, no worries.

I have grown extremely tired of Still Loving You and I’m certain I’m not alone. That song never really hit me. No big deal for it’s the only Scorpions song out of their iconic catalog that I just skip over. Rock You Like A Hurricane is teetering on the edge of being tiresome for me. What saves this song for me at this point is the guitar solo. Enough negativity! I do get psyched out of my cranium by Can’t Live Without You, No One Like You, Big City Nights and Rhythm Of Love. All these songs I’ve mentioned in this post are on this CD.

I’m happy I bought this Scorpions CD when I did. I have no plans to get rid of it either. That’s a good thing, due to my selling off of many CDs in recent years. As you look over the tracklist on the back of this CD, you’ll see there are 4 songs that are live versions. The live songs are from the stupendous World Wide Live from 1985, with the exception of Wind Of Change which is from Live Bites (1995).

Granted, this CD compilation is missing many classic Scorpions songs; heck, it’s only one CD and I’m certain it was never meant to be a definitive Scorpions greatest hits package. Thank you for visiting Metal Odyssey, I truly appreciate it. Please stay safe out there, help out one another and… Metal Be Thy Name. – Stone

Hi Headbangers,

As most of you know, Frankie Banali, drummer and manager of QUIET RIOT has been battling stage four pancreatic cancer for the last year. He is putting on a brave fight and punching cancer in the nose. However, with the spring and summer shows canceled or postponed because of the pandemic he now faces a struggle to cover the ever-mounting medical expenses. His friends Peter Beckett (of the band PLAYER) and his wonderful wife Eden started a go fund me to help raise funds for his battle. If you can chip in it would be greatly appreciated. We know this is a terrible time for everyone. If you are unable to, please share. Thank you and stay safe and healthy out there!

2020 – The Twilight Zone Has Arrived

Posted in Metal with tags , , , , on March 28, 2020 by Metal Odyssey

We are either in quarantine, total isolation, working from home, stricken by the coronavirus or we’re an essential employee being exposed on the front lines. My deepest condolences to those who’ve lost loved ones and/or friends from this evil virus. Please stay strong and heal fast to those currently suffering from any symptoms of coronavirus. I give the deepest appreciation to ALL the people of so many trades and occupations that are helping save lives and to those allowing our food supply chain to continue without problems. Other than the hoarding of food and wipe your ass products, society has been trying to do their part.

My day job is working full-time in a high traffic and extremely popular grocery store. I have seen first hand the panic persona of the general public. Trust me, it has been the most stressful I’ve felt in my entire life. However, I and the ENTIRE WORLD will get through this, together. I’ve turned to my family, friends and coworkers for moral support; without them I’d be a basket case. I strongly advise anyone staying home for whatever reason to do just that. STAY HOME. There are tons of food delivery services available, at your disposal. If you live in a rural setting, by all means go out and get your food and supplies.

SUPPORT YOUR LOCAL EATERIES THAT ARE OFFERING TAKE-OUT!!!! If you can. I am scared out of my mind as to which food establishments in my neighborhood and surrounding area that will not survive this lock down. I am so saddened for my many friends that work as bartenders, waiters, waitresses, cooks, etc. that are in danger of never having their employer reopen. Plus, so many of these friends depended on tips to survive, outside of their hourly wages. Unreal sad.

My biggest pick-me-up during this pandemic has been music. Music soothes the soul and cheers me up like no other, save for my family. I’ve turned to METAL so much more since this Twilight Zone has started and I’ve also been lucky enough to have the spare dollars to support my favorite underground bands by purchasing their music online. If you have the spare $10, buy an album from a struggling band; so much money is being spent on charities as it is and all bands have had to cancel their tours.

In closing, THANK YOU for reading this. I never thought in a billion years I would be living in a Twilight Zone movie; yet here we are experiencing every grueling second of it. If I failed to mention anyone or any entity that is struggling during our global crisis, it is not intended and my apology is extended. As the mighty Tesla song goes: “HANG TOUGH”. Metal be thy name. DIGIPAKS STINK LIKE MONKEY POOP. HERE’S WHY…

Posted in classic rock, Hard Rock, humor, Music, news, rock music with tags , , , , , on October 20, 2015 by Metal Odyssey

Screen Shot 2015-10-19 at 11.21.37 PM

Below you will find the Top 10 Reasons Why Digipaks Stink Like Monkey Poop. Enjoy.

______________________________

  • Digipaks crease, ding and tear VERY EASILY, even with delicate handling.
  • Even before you buy the damn digipak version off the retail shelf, it’s already dinged, creased or torn. That’s bullshit.
  • Guess what happens while taking the plastic wrap off of a digipak? You ding it. That’s insane bullshit.
  • It takes patience and skill to get the damn CD and liner notes out of the digipak sleeve. After doing so, the cardboard sleeve is dinged from your fingernails; not to mention the liner notes took a nasty beating too.
  • Digipaks get CRUSHED when stacked underneath a pile of CD jewel cases. Hell, a couple of magazines can crush a digipak. Again, that’s bullshit.

This is NO laughing matter!!!

Laughing Monkey - promo pic - 2015 - #667MO66777MNSSC

  • A digipak has NO defense against any liquid. At least a CD jewel case has a freaking fighting chance in protecting the liner notes and CD itself. Trust me, I know ALL about that one.
  • If you wanted to bury your digipak in the ground, for safekeeping, the life expectancy of the cardboard is 4 weeks. That’s intense bullshit.
  • A damaged CD jewel case can be easily replaced. A damaged digipak stalks your music collection, like the uninvited pain-in-the-ass that nobody gives a shit about. Do not get alarmed, for the respective CD and liner notes will always find themselves a new home inside a spare and cozy… jewel case.
  • Just opening and closing a digipak automatically CREASES the spine; not to mention leaving visible fingerprints all over the cardboard. That is unreal bullshit.
  • Purchasing a used CD as a digipak version is never a fun moment. The digipak 99.9% of the time is so freaking mishandled, dinged and worn; not to mention the disease ridden bacteria that has probably been absorbed by the cardboard itself. Yay. Um, bullshit.

JOE SATRIANI AND ROBIN DIMAGGIO TEAM UP ON ORIGINAL SONG FOR THE PRESIDENT OF THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE UNITED NATIONS GALA

Posted in guitarists, Music, music news, news, world news with tags , , , , on June 9, 2015 by Metal Odyssey

Song to Debut at the Annual Presidential General Assembly of the UN 69TH Session Gala on June 30th

______________________

(Los Angeles, CA) World renowned guitarist, JOE SATRIANI and UN Musical Director ROBIN DIMAGGIO, have teamed up to compose and produce a new song entitled, “Music Without Words” to be unveiled at the June 30th Annual Presidential General Assembly of the UN 69th Session Gala in New York City. The Assembly and Gala feature world dignitaries as well as the Heads of States from nations across the globe. Accompanying the song will be a video, compiled by the UN, featuring footage of people the world over.

The song was co-written by the two exclusively for this event and produced by DiMaggio as the UN Musical Director. On his collaboration with SATRIANI, DiMaggio stated “Working with Joe has brought a new meaning to music, this masterpiece was a collaboration of elegance and prestige. This unforgettable melody is for all the human beings in sync with enlightenment and peace.”

A meeting between these two iconic musicians first took place when Robin, as musical director for the Arsenio Hall Show, asked SATRIANI to sit in with his band last fall. A friendship sparked between the two and discussions of collaborating for the UN, began. Fast forward to June 30th when the piece will debut at the UN Assembly. “Robin came to me with a beautiful challenge,” SATRIANI says, “to create a melody that would touch the hearts of six billion people, a call to humanity, a message of love. He sent me an awesome groove to get the ball rolling, I sent him back a melody, and we kept the collaboration going until we were both blown away. I’m thrilled with the final mix and can’t wait for people to hear it.”

The song also features vocals from Ms Monet, a Grammy-award winning vocalist, songwriter and performer who has sung with everyone from Boz Scaggs to Faith Hill, Toto and Queen Latifah. It was DiMaggio’s decision, to blend the beauty of Ms Monet’s vocals with SATRIANI’s guitar to create such an incredibly moving piece.

SATRIANI is currently readying his 15th solo album, “Shockwave Supernova” for release on July 24th. SATRIANI is the world’s most commercially successful solo guitar performer, with six gold and platinum discs to his credit (including one more gold award for the debut album by his band Chickenfoot), and sales in excess of 10 million copies. The critically acclaimed guitarist also has 15 Grammy nominations for songs such as “Always With Me, Always With You,” “The Crush Of Love,” and “Summer Song,” as well as full albums like Surfing With The Alien, The Extremist and Super Colossal.

Robin DiMaggio is a musical force to be reckoned with. Known as one of the world’s premiere drummers and classical/world percussionists, Robin is also a highly skilled songwriter, composer, conductor, arranger, producer, engineer, and instrumentalist. He has toured and recorded with veterans such as Paul Simon, David Bowie, Jackson Browne, Diana Ross, Tupac, Dr. Dre, Luther Vandross, Lil Jon, Martina McBride, Daft Punk, Johnny Cash, and Chris Isaak, as well as with acclaimed world musicians, sitarist/composer Ravi Shankar and violin maestro L. Shankar. He has also appeared on David Letterman and has performed at the Grammy Awards, American Music Awards, World Music Awards in Monte Carlo, and the MTV Music Awards, and was Musical Director and drummer for late-night TV’s Arsenio Hall Show on CBS Syndication, and TBS’ Lopez Tonight, hosted by George Lopez.

Having traveled extensively from an early age, Robin’s music incorporates rhythms and sounds from diverse cultures throughout the world. The vast array of influences in Robin’s life have made him a charismatic ambassador of the arts. For the fifth straight year, Robin has been assigned the returning position of Music Director for the United Nations, where one of his many responsibilities includes coordinating musical guests for the official General Assembly Summit in New York City each September at the prestigious Waldorf Astoria. Robin produced former Eagles guitarist Don Felder’s 2012 album, Road to Forever, and Stephen Bishop’s 2014 release, Be Here Then. Robin has some incredible projects in the works, as he is in the preliminary stages of his new vision — the first U.N. School of Art, Culture and Music in Southern California.

Four Bizarre Mothers Day Album Covers

Mothers Day - Cherry Pie - promo album cover pic

Mothers Day is on Sunday, May 10th. I wish all the moms and grandmas a Happy Mothers day. Here at Metal Odyssey, our special way of celebrating Mothers Day is to present this list of Four Bizarre Mothers Day Album Covers. Each album cover on this list is clearly created by people that have not a clue, in my opinion.

The Mothers Day album cover (above) really has me questioning: who is the dummy that decided to combine Mothers Day with cherry pie for an album cover? WTF?! That is flat-out insane, immature and embarrassing! Of all the freaking pies in the world, why spotlight cherry pie? Apple pie, peach pie or any other stinking pie would have done just nicely, thank you very much.

The Flexican & Sef - Mothers Day - extended version - promo pic - 2014

Evidently the musical artist for this Mother’s Day song is: The Flexican & Sef. My big question is: what the hell does the artwork on this MP3 single have to with Mother’s Day? Two dudes and a city skyline, inside a burst, does not represent Mother’s Day to me. Un-freaking-real. Whatever.

Mothers Day Special - promo album cover pic - 2013

The above Mother’s Day album cover is incredibly bizarre! That mother depicted is bloodied and in obvious pain! Did this mother really deserve such a dreadful situation as this? What is that piece of lumber that she is holding? What does this cover art mean? WTF?!

The Mothers Day Massacre - Vol. 2 - promo album cover pic

Lastly, I don’t dig the combination of Mother’s Day and massacre; it is grossly immature to combine the two. Really. The moron(s) that decided to attach The Mothers Day Massacre to a Heavy Metal compilation of songs needs to have their lame-ass brain(s) examined for worm rot. Once again, I’m reminded that dumb-asses are among us. This also reminds me that there are people still out there sniffing model glue and they are roaming among us.

I love my mother with all my heart and hope she has a fun day in heaven, alongside my sister. I miss them both dearly. Metal be thy name – Stone.

Gozu - European Tour 2014 - promo flyer

Massachusetts hellions, GOZU, will take their riffs overseas next week for their first-ever European takeover! Set to begin at the legendary Roadburn Festival, the band will wage a full-on volume ambush through ten select locales in the Netherlands, Germany, Slovenia and Italy, concluding with a performance at Desertfest in Berlin.

GOZU will be touting the fruit of their The Fury Of A Patient Man full-length released last Spring via Small Stone. The self-produced ten track monster earned widespread praise for its Chris Cornellian vocal swells and robust, heavy rock swagger. Describes The Big Takeover of the release, “Besides wielding bruising riffs like katanas, the Cambridge, Massachusetts quartet shows an impish sense of pop culture humor with titles like ‘Charles Bronson Pinchot,’ ‘Disco Related Injury’ and the Welcome Back, Kotter referencing ‘Signed, Epstein’s Mom.’ But the primary reasons GOZU stomps most pot smoking riffmeisters into the ground are their two frontdudes. Guitarist Doug Sherman maintains a melodic touch even as his amps scream for mercy, and singer Marc Gaffney exudes as much soul as bravado.”

Adds MetalSucks, “GOZU play the tunes on their sophomore album with a pair of great grizzled gonads. We’re talking balls, people, some truly tremendous twin testes. The kind so deeply and scraggily forested that those epic ball-beards have epic ball-beards; the kind that require a high quality wide-angle lens to get any real perspective on… At times, The Fury Of A Patient Man plays like a de-progged Mastodon after a dozen successful anger management sessions, or a laid back King Giant. The consistently competent delivery, the thick lowdown chords, dynamic proficiency and attention to density all point that direction. It’s the kind of heavy rock that just about anybody can enjoy over a few foamy brews in a hazy basement bar on a Saturday night. And when your date agrees to take the evening back to your place, you can even pretend she’s thinking of you the whole time.”

A special deluxe edition of The Fury Of A Patient Man was recently released via Small Stone in celebration of the upcoming European journey. Limited to 500 copies, the 2XLP set comes on 180-gram wax with a wide spine jacket, poly-lined sleeve, and two colors – LP one is “clear green” while LP two is “solid purple.” Sides one, two and three feature tracks from the original album, while side four offers up exclusive vinyl-only numbers with one original tune (“Break You”) and GOZUed renditions of Simply Red’s “Holding Back The Years” and D’Angelo’s “Shit, Damn, Motherfucker.”
