SKID ROW – UNITED WORLD REBELLION (CHAPTER ONE) EP was released back on April 16th and it has absolutely kicked my Heavy Rock lovin’ ass since the first moment I cranked it up! Below are 5 reasons why YOU MUST BUY this kick ass CD and find out why it is a 100% fabulous release from these Legends of Heavy Music! Fans have waited several years for some new studio material from SKID ROW and now it’s here! Metal be thy name!

Reason # 5: Johnny Solinger. As with prior SKID ROW releases Thickskin (2003) and Revolutions Per Minute (2006), Johnny Solinger has proven himself to be one hell of a talent vocally; giving SKID ROW and their songs a badass vibe and character that I not only expect… it’s what I want!

Reason #4: ALL 5 songs kick Heavy Rockin’ ass. Hey, I’ve used the word “ass” a couple of times here already. Um, if you’re offended… kiss my Heavy Rockin’ and Metal lovin’ ass.

Reason #3: This Is Killing Me. Yes, the (power) ballad: This Is Killing Me. I am Stone. I HATE ballads, therefore, when a ballad psyches-me-out-of-my-mind I’m gonna tell the whole F’n world about it. Whoa.

Reason #2: SKID ROW could have taken the low road and not bothered to release any new music at all. Instead, SKID ROW are not about resting on their legendary Heavy Rock laurels; this is a band that obviously wants to remind fans and new fans alike: We are here to kick your Heavy Rock ass!

Reason #1: The band itself. SKID ROW. Holy shit did they compile 5 Hard Rockin’ songs that are QUALITY in BOTH music AND lyrics. I only wish United World Rebellion (Chapter One) had 10, 12 or more songs! This isn’t a SKID ROW release to ignore, my fellow Rockaholics and Metal brethren. Chapter Two can’t be released quick enough for me. Metal as my witness, this EP from SKID ROW is a MUST buy. Metal be thy name.

KILLER DWARFS – TO REUNITE TO SUPPORT RELEASE OF “LOST” ALBUM “START @ ONE”

Legendary Canadian band KILLER DWARFS, are very excited to announce that they are reuniting to support the release of their “Lost” album Start @ One . The tracks were recorded in 1993 at Powerlines Studios in Toronto, Ontario, Canada with Producer/Engineer Fred Duvall. Fred also recently produced and recorded the very successful Russ Dwarf acoustic release Wireless.

The album`s lineup of Russ Dwarf, Darrell Dwarf, Ronbo Dwarf, and Gerry Dwarf is the same as the bands prior Sony/Epic release Method to the Madness in 1991. The original master tapes are currently being digitally remixed and re-mastered for the release scheduled for early July 2013. This is the 20th anniversary of the recording of this never released album.

Dates are still to be finalized and will be announced over the next few months. SOULFLY are pleased to announce that they have inked a deal with Nuclear Blast Entertainment, a new division of Nuclear Blast formed by Nuclear Blast owner Markus Staiger and former Roadrunner A&R chief Monte Conner. SOULFLY will enter the studio this month to begin recording their as-of-yet-untitled ninth studio album. The record will be produced by the world-renowned Terry Date, who is known for his work with such bands PANTERA, DEFTONES and SOUNDGARDEN among many others.

“I’m really excited to be signing SOULFLY to Nuclear Blast Records,” commented legendary frontman Max Cavalera (SEPULTURA, CAVALERA CONSPIRACY). “On top of it, we’re going to be reunited with Monte Conner who I’ve worked with for over 20 years at Roadrunner. SOULFLY ‘s new album is going to be recorded in Seattle with the great producer Terry Date, and it’s going to come out later in the year through Nuclear Blast worldwide. Keep it metal!”

“It feels so right to be reunited with Max Cavalera,” added Monte Conner. “He is the second artist I signed and we’ve made 17 albums together over the years, including several metal classics. Max’s voice remains just as unique and powerful as the day I met him and I felt the last SOULFLY album Enslaved was his strongest work since the band’s Gold-selling debut. I am honored to call him a friend and to continue to be a part of his mission.”

Ever since the band’s gold-certified debut in 1998, SOULFLY have become deadlier and more dangerous with each critically acclaimed successive release, and their upcoming album will be no exception. Expect a release tentatively in the Fall of this year.

London, UK – Much to the excitent of music aficionados across the globe, the second solo album by composer and bass player Antoine Fafard, ‘Occultus Tramitis’, will be released digitally on May 15 and on CD June 1, 2013. Featuring the contributions of a number of jazz-rock legends including Terry Bozzio (Jeff Beck, Frank Zappa), Jerry Goodman (Mahavishnu Orchestra), Gavin Harrison (King Crimson, Porcupine Tree), Scott Henderson (Tribal Tech), Simon Phillips (Jeff Beck, Toto), Chad Wackerman (Allan Holdsworth, Frank Zappa) and Dave Weckl (Chick Corea, Mike Stern), ‘Occultus Tramitis’ encompasses 11 tracks presenting almost an hour of exciting new music.

“Working on Antoines project was a real treat…his compositions and playing made it a unique experience. Both challenging and joyful at the same time! He put together a great team of players and I only wish we could have been playing in the same room!” – Jerry Goodman

Says Antoine, “I started to work on this CD in September 2011, right after the release of the ‘Solus Operandi’ album, and was still working on it in April 2013. I began to compose music with specific players in mind, hoping that they would eventually agree to participate. I guess that the players themselves were a great source of inspiration during the composition process. Interestingly, I wasn’t present during the recording sessions of any of the collaborators on this CD (all 15 of them). Each player on this album recorded their tracks in their home studios and all the songs were mixed in my home studio.”

Drum legend Terry Bozzio comments on the track he performs on: “This is a really challenging piece. It was very subtle – it’s in eleven and it’s very sneaky… It is deceptively simple because it has an open, very flowing feel to the piece.”

Antoine Fafard’s recording career began with his band Spaced Out, who released their first album in 2000. By 2008 Spaced Out had recorded five studio albums, one live album and two DVDs, and had performed on international stages including Nearfest, USA in 2002 and Crescendo, France in 2006.

In 2010, Antoine decided to begin recording under his own name, without the limitations of the band format. His first solo album, ‘Solus Operandi’, released in August 2011, features more than an hour of original instrumental music by Antoine, working with a total of 13 collaborators, including world-class performers such as Dave Weckl (Chick Corea, Mike Stern), guitarist Jerry De Villiers Jr and drummer Magella Cormier. ‘Solus Operandi’ was composed on electric fretless bass and classical guitar, after Antoine re-acquainted himself with the guitar following many years focusing on the bass.

Which brings us to 2013 and the release of Antoine’s highly anticipated new solo album, ‘Occultus Tramitis’. The music on ‘Occultus Tramitis’ differs between the tracks, and the fusion of influences that characterizes Antoine’s music means it doesn’t fall easily into a single style or genre. However, the album was composed as a complete work. Melodic aspects are beautifully realized by Jerry Goodman, who is featured on more than half of the tracks among odd time signatures, multiple modulations and rhythmical illusions. There are exceptional performances from all Antoine’s collaborators, including spectacular solos.

Los Angeles, CA – Following the success of their last video which became a YouTube success, reaching over two million views and gaining them a recording contract and opening slots for Linkin Park and Guns N’ Roses, Russian Indie Punk/Rock band Biting Elbows continues to push the envelope. The band has released (March 2013) their thrilling new single and video “Bad Motherf*cker.” The video carries just as much, if not more fire power and sting as the name of the song. The band’s efforts have been paying off as their fan base has significantly increased and begged for more. Known to pack a hard punch with their videos and music, Biting Elbows have been making a name for themselves in Europe and beyond.

Heart-racing and non-stop action, the video for Bad Motherf*cker is a sequel to last year’s “Stampede,” also known as Insane Office Escape. The prequel video is a short movie in the point of view of a man who steals a magic vial and is chased through an office and kidnapped. Directed by Naishuller and shot by Sergey Valyaev, the “Bad Motherf*cker” video is an intensified grimy and gritty continuation of Stampede and is portrayed like a real life video game, amid tons of blood and vivid shoot-outs. The sequel follows the main character as he escapes the building, killing anyone in his way as he evades his kidnappers.

Full of intriguing special effects and jaw-dropping stunts, the video will have fans on the edge of their seats. Shot over nine full days, the video had a team of five stuntmen, including a parkour practitioner, and three camera specialists. The song itself lyrically speaks to, and at the same time mocks the idea of how rock stars keep up a bad boy persona to keep fans interested. The video is currently available to watch on Biting Elbow’s YouTube channel.

Fronted by vocalist and guitarist Ilya Naishuller, the four-piece indie band got its start in 2007 with lead guitarist Garik Buldenkov, bassist Ilya Kondratiev and virtuoso drummer Alexei Zamaraev. The four men take their sound to new heights by experimenting with electric sounds, mashing them together with rock ‘n’ roll and adding post-punk elements to create head-nodding tracks. The Russian musicians became a hit with the locals during the first years of their career and released their first EP together called The Dope Fiend Massacre in 2011.

Multitalented Naishuller is a director by day and shoots all of the band’s music videos including the Youtube sensation Stampede. KING KOBRA – “II” Due For Release In July On Frontiers Records

Frontiers Records is pleased to announce the release of KING KOBRA’s new studio album II on July 5th in Europe and July 9th in North America.

King Kobra’s long-awaited reunion album “King Kobra” (s/t) released on Frontiers Records in 2011, left no doubt that this was a band to be reckoned with. Even though nearly 25 years had passed since the original line-up recorded the landmark “Ready To Strike” and “Thrill Of A Lifetime” albums, the energy and immediacy of the bands lightning attack had not diminished one iota and fans responded in kind.

“We chose to name this album “II” because it is both the second album of our reformation with Frontiers Records as well as the second generation of the band with Paul Shortino as lead vocalist,” says guitarist David Michael-Philips. “Paul’s unique style gives the band a new feel apart from what we were in the 80s with original singer Mark/Marcie Free. I think the “re-boot” naming gives Paul the credit he deserves while paying homage to our original singer and sound”.

The thick, soulful vocals of Paul Shortino, dual guitarists Mick Sweda and David Michael-Philips, and the thundering bass and drums of Johnny Rod and Carmine Appice delivered an album that, while easily carrying on the tradition of the first two releases, brought a contemporary twist to a signature melodic, hard rock style. “The “70’s” flavour of this new album was a conscious move to incorporate our influences into the music,” says David Michael-Philips, while Carmine Appice adds “King Kobra was a band in the ‘80s with great players…and had roots in the ‘70s also.. We tried to make a cool combination of both, which I think we achieved with this new album”.

Produced by David Henzerling with Carmine Appice and Paul Shortino, II digs into King Kobra hard rock roots to create an album that has all the swagger and swing of the classic 70’s albums (think Montrose, Bad Company, Deep Purple and even Carmine’s own legendary Cactus) with a crystal clear sound that combines the best of both analogue and digital recording techniques. Almost three years after their pummeling Gutter Earth EP was inflicted upon the masses, cold-blooded Elizabeth, New Jersey-based Death Metal insurgents GRIMUS have completed their first proper full-length, Omnicide.

With its members all hailing from a plethora of Extreme Metal acts including Iberian Black Metal outfit Windfaerer, Metal Blade Tech/Death act Allegaeon and others, the members of GRIMUS are united in hatred for humankind, their output surging with guttural, cutting-edge Death Metal prowess, with monolithic slams and swells of the most vicious kind infiltrating their uncompromising low-end attack. These atrocious features are grippingly captured on the quintet’s debut full-length album, Omnicide. The term literally meaning the killing of everything is a testament to man’s inherent, bloodthirsty nature and audacity to alter his surroundings, through efficient forms of destruction. Paradoxically, mankind is willfully committing suicide in its attempt to become a godlike creator. This album is a soundtrack to the decimation of all that is known, “the age of none.”

A thirty-six minute onslaught of blasting and grooving barbarity, Omnicide was tracked and mixed by guitarist Marco Bobadilla at Crimson Recording and mastered by Alan Douches (Cannibal Corpse, Beneath the Massacre, Job For A Cowboy) at West West Side Music. GRIMUS will self-release Omnicide on June 25 2013.

HELIX – It was sometime back around 1983, when I first heard the legendary HELIX on FM radio. I can’t remember which Hartford, Connecticut station that broadcasted (the very cool) show: Metal Shop. This was a pump-you-up block of time devoted to Heavy Metal and back in ’83 it was one of the best gigs in town. I was born and raised in a remote section of Connecticut,  therefore, getting my kicks from Metal Shop (back then) was a natural high that money couldn’t buy.

The first two HELIX songs that I heard on Metal Shop were: Heavy Metal Love and White Lace And Black Leather. Whoa! I knew instantly, upon getting psyched-out-of-my-mind by these two HELIX songs, that a trip to Strawberries Records & Tapes was mandatory. I had to pick up some HELIX. On vinyl. Old School, baby. Back in the day, I rung that HELIX bell and told all that bubble gum shit: go to hell!

Solo Artist and Eddie Money drummer needs your help in his fight against cancer!

I recently got the news that a long time musician/friend has been diagnosed with cancer and is to start undergoing treatment.  If that isn’t bad enough, he is without insurance during this ordeal and will have to personally take care of all of his medical expenses which can be quite costly. Please join me in helping this great musician who you know as Glenn Symmonds – long time drummer for Eddie Money and has an extensive catalog of his solo work.  Here is the information from Glenn’s page:

Glenn was diagnosed with bladder cancer on April 23rd.

 He had surgery to remove a tumor from his bladder on April 29th.

He is scheduled to begin a 12-week round of chemotherapy on June 3rd.

He will have another surgery after the chemo treatment.

Like many professional musicians, Glenn is uninsured.

Cancer is expensive…. please help in anyway you can.

Songs such as “From the Ground Up”, “Cognoscenti” and “System for Solution” pursue the Porcupine Tree meets Radiohead approach of their debut record ‘Diving Bell’ with powerful yet intricate riffs propelling the songwriting that continues to make ever more inventive use of surprising twists and turns in the arrangement.

Revolution Harmony, the brainchild of British music lecturer/journalist Ray Holroyd, has announced the July 18th release of its debut All-Star charity single, We Are. The song features vocals from Serj Tankian (System Of A Down) and Ihsahn (Emperor), as well as guitar solos by Devin Townsend.

Composed, arranged, programmed and produced by Ray Holroyd in Vancouver, the complex international studio project was recorded in North America, England, Norway and New Zealand, then mixed by Rohan Onraet (Slipknot, Machine Head) in London, and mastered by Ted Jensen (Green Day, Muse) in New York. The single also features Stefan Loh (We Claimed Sentience Once – signed to Revolution Harmony) on guitars, and additional vocals from the young up-and-coming UK singer Abbie Johnson.

Vancouver-based non-profit record label Revolution Harmony was launched in 2011 by Holroyd. After founding the non-profit Grade 9 Records in 2008 and growing the label over three successful years, Holroyd decided to expand upon what he had originally established as a means for his students to sell their music and donate the profits to charity, and Revolution Harmony was born. Revolution Harmony acts as a two-way channel, providing an outlet for artists to release their music worldwide and earn money from it, and providing an inlet for the label profits from that music to be redirected to charities that restore harmony between all people, animals and the environment.

The lyrical theme in ‘We Are’ is based on the concept behind Revolution Harmony, which is essentially the belief that musical harmony has the power to inspire a revolution towards societal harmony. The single is dedicated to Nelson Mandela and the memory of Lucky Dube, regarded as South Africa’s Bob Marley, and will be released worldwide on Mandela Day (18 July), with all proceeds donated to Buskaid, a charity that provides free music lessons and instruments to children in the townships of South Africa.

The Pretty Goodbyes – Illuminates Alternative Indie Rock On Their Debut Demo EP “Now We Run”

THE PRETTY GOODBYES – The 3 song debut demo EP, Now We Run, from the Loughborough based 4-piece band The Pretty Goodbyes was released back on August 6th, 2012. When very, very cool Alternative/Indie Rock crosses my Rockin’ path, I’m gonna bellow about it; right here on Metal Odyssey. This unsigned UK band would be signed by me in a micro second, if I had the (prestigious) ability to do so for a (knowledgeable) record label.

This Now We Run EP has unveiled 3 songs to my senses and ALL 3 are remarkably memorable, well written and downright (gulp) fun! I always appreciate the way a talented band like The Pretty Goodbyes can coalesce the beauty of 80’s New Wave, late 80’s College Radio and Early 90’s Alternative while still maintaining a balance of Post-Punk and Modern Indie Rock/Alternative sound and vibes; all the while keeping the flames of Indie Pop to a tolerable minimum (if any). Phew! I got that off my chest!

I’m digging this band and the vocals of George Evans are nothing short of terrific. Any serious fan of Alternative and Indie Rock will embrace the music from The Pretty Goodbyes. The Pretty Goodbyes have obviously learned at a very early stage, quality songs are their ticket to success; and I see nothing less happening for this band in the future.
