Following an intensely moving Joey LaCaze tribute performance at the first annual Housecore Horror Film Fest this past weekend, a set which featured Dale Crover from the mighty Melvins holding down the drum kit, EYEHATEGOD continues moving forward with new drummer Aaron Hill. Hill comes by way of New Orleans’ local acts Missing Monuments and Mountain of Wizard.

Hill will play his first official show with EYEHATEGOD tonight at the world-famous House of Shock with horror surf band The Unnaturals. From there, the band will ride on to take Columbus’ Al Rosa Villa on November 1st and bring things to a chaotic close with two back-to-back nights of mischief at Chicago’s Cobra Lounge November 2nd and 3rd. Later next month, EYEHATEGOD will stomp their way through Brooklyn, New York, West Chester, Pennsylvania and Quincy, Massachusetts with additional live takeovers to be announced in the weeks to come.

The ever elusive new LP is moving closer to release with mixes being done by renowned sound wizard Sanford Parker as we speak. Stay tuned for further info as it becomes available.

SNOW WHITE’S POISON BITE – “Featuring Dr. Gruesome And The Gruesome Gory Horror Show” – Album Review

Snow White's Poison Bite - Featuring Dr. Gruesome And The Gruesome Gory Horror Show - promo cover

3.5 Out Of 5 METAL Fists!

Metal Fists - 3 and a half - Metal Odyssey

SNOW WHITE’S POISON BITE – Somewhere along my Metal life, the combination of Horror and Rock ‘N Roll has snagged a part of my Metal soul and refuses to leave. Cool. Case in point: this past Summer, I picked up the new CD from Finland’s Snow White’s Poison Bite, with its lengthy (yet cool) title: Featuring Dr. Gruesome And The Gruesome Gory Horror Show (Victory Records). I bought this CD without hearing a single note from it; the cover artwork sold itself!

If there is one dilemma I have with Snow White’s Poison Bite, it’s I wish they would settle on what sound they truly want to be famous for. These guys play (and Jeremy Thirteenth sings) Punk, Alternative, Extreme and Metal very well; only it’s the mixed bag of genres that distracts me; I sincerely want to be floored by this CD, only the change in musical styles has me asking: how does this band want to be labeled? If this Horror Crew wanted to just play straight-up (toasted cheese sandwich and beer) Horror Punk, saving the extremity and slivers of emo vocals for another day, then I’d do a naked jig clear across the beautiful state of Ohio. Yup.

Snow White's Poison Bite - Featuring Dr. Gruesome And The Gruesome Gory Horror Show - promo cover

For the Metal money, this is a (gasp) FUN CD to listen to and the song titles should pretty much give that away. I am totally down with what Snow White’s Poison Bite have done with the marketing of their band, from the artwork to their Horror Punk attire and makeup. This is a rowdy CD, which adds an important plus to my liking it. I absolutely dig the creepy spoken words on both the intro (track 1) and ending (track 10) to this CD.

The legendary (former) Misfits frontman, Michael Graves, is featured on Zombie Romance. The (unexpected) 1950’s Doo Wop and Shoo Bop experience this song initially introduces only gives way to an even more delectable dish of creepy Horror Punk, making this song my favorite of the track list. At the end of my Metal day, I do recommend this CD to Horror Punk fans and Alternative (Heavy Rock) fans alike. Metal be thy name.

Track Listing:

1. Gruesomely Introducing: Dr. Gruesome And The Gruesome Gory Horror Show 2. The Gruesome Gory Horror Show 3. There’s A New Creep On The Block 4. Will You Meet Me In The Graveyard? 5. Halloween Means Death 6. Count Dracula Kid 7. Dr. Gruesome 8. Zombie Romance (Feat. Michael Graves) 9. Lurking Inside Of You 10. The Show Must Gruesomely End

THE MELVINS STREAM “TRES CABRONES” VIA PITCHFORK ADVANCE

NEW YEAR’S EVE SHOW WITH MUDHONEY AT GREAT AMERICAN MUSIC HALL IN SAN FRANCISCO

______________________________________________

Oct. 30, 2013 – The Melvins are streaming Tres Cabrones (Nov. 5, Ipecac) in its entirety via Pitchfork (http://pitchfork.com/advance/271-tres-cabrones/).  Pre-orders for the record are available now: http://georiot.co/44Wg.

Tres Cabrones is as close as we’re willing to get to the Melvins 1983 line-up,” explained Osborne, of the 12-song album that reunites him, Dale Crover and original drummer Mike Dillard. “The best part is it’s all new songs. I specifically wrote tunes that would be good for these guys to play and it worked out great. We had no interest in rehashing tunes we wrote 30 years ago and chose instead to simply create NEW songs. It worked out perfectly.”

“Making the Tres Cabrones record was a real treat indeed. It’s a trip down memory lane complete with debauchery and ultra violence, ” said Dillard, who left the band in 1984 only to be replaced by Crover.

“After 30 years we release a record with the (almost) original line-up of the band,” added Crover. “I’ve always felt that drummer Mike Dillard was one of us. It’s great that he’s still a piece of the puzzle!  Plus, I get to see what it’s like being the bass player in the Melvins! Tres Cabrones indeed!”

The Melvins annexed Big Business band members Coady Willis and Jared Warren in 2006 for (A) Senile Animal and the quartet has remained in this incarnation for four additional releases including Everybody Loves Sausages, a covers album released this spring. Not ones to relax, the Melvins introduced Melvins Lite, a version of the band that teams Osborne and Crover with Trevor Dunn (Tomahawk, Mr. Bungle). Melvins Lite released their debut album, Freak Puke, in 2012 and subsequently embarked on a 51 date/51 State (including DC) tour of the United States. The band most recently celebrated their 30th anniversary with a six-week North American tour.

Up next for the band is a short stint in Australia with Helmet, a performance at the Meredith Music Festival on Dec. 13 and a recently announced New Year’s Eve performance with Mudhoney at the Great American Music Hall in San Francisco, Calif.

DISFIGUREMENT – Releases “Soul Rot” On Boris Records; EP Streaming In Full

Disfigurement - Soul Rot - promo cover pic

Soul Rot from Atlanta Old School Death Metal unit DISFIGUREMENT is out now on Boris Records. These five tracks burst at the seams with no frills, bone crushing Death Metal purity; the sensation is one you’ll not soon forget. Recorded by Scott Prian, mixed by Dan Klein (Arcane Studio), and mastered by Jack Control (Enormous Door), Soul Rot also features the stunning cover art of the mighty Juanjo Castellano

Soul Rot was released September 19th, on CD and digital formats. The CD version comes with a link to download bonus live material. The EP will be available on iTunes and all other major digital retailers this November.

Forged from classic Death Metal elements, DISFIGUREMENT hammers away with precise, crushing rhythms, dynamic solos and nihilistic lyrics. Since forming in 2011, DISFIGUREMENT has been active in the Atlanta Metal scene, booking and performing with such acts as Nile, Deicide, Kreator, Inquisition, Miasmal and others.

Stream and download Soul Rot at borisrecords.bandcamp.com.

Critical Praise:

“Soul Rot is an OSDM monster in a tech death rubber suit. It stomps and slams with the dexterity normally found in a group priding themselves on week-long widdles. Disfigurement though, cares more about flow. They write honest to Dio SONGS, preferring Replayability over their own ability. Visceral Bleeding with a transfusion of early Anata is a fine way to grease your brain if you can’t press play yet.”  – IAN CHAINEY: Trample of the Week

“Area band Difigurement opened the night, a joyful death metal outfit that crushed eardrums by taking notes from old school groups like Vader and Morbid Angel. They gave that good old assault on the senses just like any true death metal band should. Their sound reverberated in the late 80’s style – brutality without repetitiveness. The performance was great as well. No frills, just aggression. I hope to hear these guys again soon, because they left a tremendous impression.”- Brett Neidlinger: Backstage Beat

Great Metal Albums of 1980: Black Sabbath- Heaven And Hell

Since the 1980s was the golden age of heavy metal and that golden age began with 1980, I thought what better way to pay tribute to it than to kick things off with an album by one of heavy metal’s founding fathers: Black Sabbath. The thing is however, “Heaven and Hell” isn’t just an album, it’s a iconic album destined to go down in history as one of the greatest of all time.

The main question when this masterpiece was first unleashed back in 1980 was would new lead singer Ronnie James Dio fill the void left by Ozzy Osbourne. The answer to that is a resounding “YES!” Now, I am not going to debate who’s the better of these two vocal Gods. They both have different vocal styles but at the same time, their vocals were suited to the needs of Black Sabbath. Dio’s vocals are truly amazing on…

Toxic Holocaust - Chemistry Of Consciousness - promo cover pic

Today Portland Metal/Punk unit, TOXIC HOLOCAUST, in conjunction with mega music portal, Vevo, unveils their latest audiovisual undertaking for the track, “Acid Fuzz.” The Technicolor animation film was created by director Adam Avilla and comes on the eve of the official North American release of Chemistry Of Consciousness!

Kick your Monday in the buttcheeks with the ultra-evil, deviously absorbing, tripnotic cartoon adventures of “Acid Fuzz” at THIS LOCATION.

Chemistry Of Consciousness was recorded by the band, mixed with Kurt Ballou (Converge) at GodCity Studio and mastered by Brad Boatright (Sleep, From Ashes Rise, Nails) at Audiosiege Engineering. Easily TOXIC HOLOCAUST’s most musically and conceptually mature undertaking to date, the record has earned critical fuck-yeahs globally for its blazing riffs, gravelly, venom-coated vocals, and a deadly fixation on the evil in man and a post-apocalyptic world all wrapped in a DIY attitude. Think Discharge on speed; Slayer with a punk rock chip on its shoulder, The Exploited on a Metallica overdose… Chemistry Of Consciousness is currently streaming in its entirety, courtesy of Relapse Records, HERE.

Beauty In The Suffering - The Crazies - promo cover pic

CHICAGO, IL (DLSP) – BEAUTY IN THE SUFFERING, the newly launched electro-metal studio project from producer Dietrich Thrall (MARAZENE), will release the bands debut single, “THE CRAZIES”, on November 5, 2013.

Two years in the making, “THE CRAZIES” (The Zombie Song) marks the first new material released by DieTrich since MARAZENE’s 2011’s critically hailed cover of MOTLEY CRUE’s “LIVE WIRE” and subsequent final single “WELCOME TO YOUR HOLIDAY.”

After spending the majority of 2012 locked away in his personal studio writing, arranging, and programming 40+ songs, DieTrich emerged for several minutes to announce his new project only to dive back into a 15 hour marathon studio session with drummer CHRIS EMERY of AMERICAN HEAD CHARGE. Other announced studio special guests include AARON “MONTY” MONTGOMERY (TRAPT), ANGEL BARTOLOTTA (DOPE, TEAM CYBERGEIST), CHRIS TELKES (NOCTURNE, THE RAZORBLADE DOLLS), and PROVO PROVENZANO (SKINLAB, RIKETS).

__________________________________________

Provo has also been the engineering force behind the project. Said Provo:BEAUTY IN THE SUFFERING is one of the most exciting projects I’ve worked on lately. DieTrich is insanely precise in the studio and has a great vision for where his songs need to be and the DIY ability and attitude to get it done right. DieTrich has also brought in some amazing studio musicians to help round out a unique and catchy collection of gritty and electronic based tunes. I can’t wait to get these songs out for the world to hear!”

BEAUTY IN THE SUFFERING are currently editing multiple full production videos for “THE CRAZIES” (The Zombie Song) as well as two other tracks, “REVEILLE” and “JULIET” that the band plans to drop in the coming weeks. Release dates for the songs and the videos are forthcoming.

Stone Is Fed Up… And Here Are The Reasons Why…

MetalOdyssey

You know, I haven’t bitched here on Metal Odyssey in a very long time. Very long time. Well, brace yourselves, cause I’m ready to bitch! I’m fed up. Wanna know why? Below are the reasons why I’m fed up. Take a gander at my bitching and if you don’t want to bother, well then, I really don’t give 2 shits. Seriously, I don’t. Metal be thy name.

1. ALL United States politicians from the municipal level on up can kiss my ass. Why? Cause Republicans are NOW Democrats and Democrats are NOW Republicans. Unless you’re a Tea Party constituent, y’all can kiss my ass again.

2. Dee Snider –  Please, Dee Snider, shut the hell up already. You are NO LONGER funny, relevant, inspirational or badass. You are merely a whisper of “what once was” prior to your very annoying 1983 album: Stay Hungry. Go Away now, Dee. You’re yesterdays news. Hey Dee… two words for you… Broad Way. Here’s two more words for you Dee: You Liberal.

__________________________________________

3. Satellite Radio. Hey Satellite Radio… kiss my ass too! Y’all aren’t worth the drop of sweat off of a donkey’s asshole. I can lug around my CD catalog into my car and not have to give a shit about you corporate dumb dumbs; and save a TON of money in the process.

4. Apple. It seems like Apple is coming out with a NEW iPhone every two weeks now. Hey Apple… kiss my ass too! Hey Apple… how much of your BILLION dollars in profits have you given back to charity? Dumb asses, Apple.

5. Male erectile Enhancement Commercials. Give me a break. If I had a hard-on that lasted for more than 4 to 6 hours… I’m not calling any fucking doctor. If there are dudes out there that need this product, just pick up a copy of SWANK and you’ll save yourself a fortune. Plus, I’d wish these male erectile enhancement companies would STOP hiring all those geek corporate assholes to be acting like morons in your commercials. Dorks. Idiots.

__________________________________________

6. Metallica. Please, Metallica, go away! Lars Ulrich looks like he’s 85 years old and y’all can’t put out a studio album without it sounding like a Rick Rubin billion dollar produced piece of shit called Death Magnetic.

7. Robert Trujillo – Somebody should remind Robert Trujillo, that his Metallica legacy is he’s ONLY played on that one full-length studio piece of garbage… Death Magnetic as a replacement musician for Metallica. I’m NOT even gonna count that EP offering of Beyond Magnetic. Why bother? It was a good effort by Metallica, yet, still, go away Metallica. Um, Mr. Trujillo… you are light years away from being the bass legend that Cliff Burton was (and still is). Go back to Sharon Osbourne and ask her if you could re-record more bass tracks for her on the Ozzy Osbourne catalog, Robert Trujillo. Reminder: You are NOT a Metallica legend, Robert Trujillo. Jason Newsted can school YOU on bass playing any day of the fucking year. YOU KNOW IT TOO.

SURGEON – Philadelphia Based Epic Metal Unit Confirms November Mini-Tour

Philly’s Epic Metal outfit, SURGEON, has confirmed an upcoming Fall tour in support of their second full-length release, Chemical Reign.

On November 14th, SURGEON will traverse south to converge with their cohorts in Midnight Eye for the week-long run, kicking the tour off in Washington, DC that evening supporting the mighty Absu. The following six nights will see the two bands rolling through Richmond, Harrisonburg, Baltimore, Philadelphia, Brooklyn and Boston where the tour comes to an end on November 20th.

SURGEON’s output ventures into foreign territory for most by-the-books classical and fusion acts under the progressive metal umbrella. Perhaps simply “epic metal” is a more defining tag, as the talented crew seamlessly blends a variety of rugged post-death and post-doom elements into their infectious songcraft. They self-released their sophomore album, Chemical Reign; the record produced by the band and Kevin Antreassian (Dillinger Escape Plan, Mike Portnoy, Russell Allen of Symphony X) at Backroom Studios in Rockaway, New Jersey, in May of this year to a parade of critical acclaim.

Full Metal Attorney stated, “They inhabit that rare space that could attract rock radio attention as well as a good share of the trve among us. I know that’s true because I can’t get these songs out of my head.” In a 4/5 review, Music Emissions said the act “fills a huge area of space with traditionally true metal, grounded in the genre’s prototypes but elaborating with skillful, creative instrumentation,” and with an 8.5/10 rating Popdose called Chemical Reign a “heavy record with just enough technicality to enhance some already great riffs… a comparison to former fellow Pennsylvanian’s Slough Feg is not far off base.”
___________________________________________
Dangerdog Music Reviews championed the album with a 4.5/5, a line from the review stating, “SURGEON takes their heaviness and applies a genuine catchy rock groove and chorus… Chemical Reign is surprising and entertaining album, and worthy of your attention.”

ABSU – Trve Brewing Company Announces Collaboration With Band To Release Four Different Beers

Posted in beer, Heavy Metal, Metal, metal bands, metal music, Music, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , , , , , on October 24, 2013 by Metal Odyssey

Trve Brewing - Eastern Candle - Absu - 2013 - promo

Denver, Colorado’s Trve Brewing Company is proud to announce details on their upcoming first out of four ales titled Eastern Candle, dedicated to the mythological occult metal act ABSU. In honor of their 20th anniversary second album, The Sun Of Tiphareth, Trve has created the first out of four ales: Eastern Candle – a pale wheat beer fermented with brettanomyces in white wine barrels. The ale is a fine equilibrium of wheat and white wine with a slight, fruit-like yeast character. (Fittingly named after the song Never Blow Out The Eastern Candle).

The three forthcoming beers to be unleashed are the following:

Tiphareth – Red Ale: This will be a soured beer with a mild strain of brettanomyces fermented in red wine barrels. This fusion will have a nice malty, tart, yet dry balance including red wine adding a background complexity.

Manannán – Brown Ale: The Manannán batch will feature rye in the grain bill, as it will be soured and fermented with a shrouded strain of brettanomyces in whiskey barrels. This will be a more assertive brew with malt character and plenty of obscurity from the yeast while also showcasing the barrel flavors.

Winter Zephyr – Black Ale: A dark wheat and dark rye concoction giving the beer its cryptic color. This ale will highlight a fair amount of oats to retain vast body after the brettanomyces have alchemically fermented in wine barrels.

ABSU recently announced details of their upcoming North American Connexus Continuation Tour, the trek to showcase the band performing set with music spanning throughout their twenty-two year recording career. This excursion is a follow-up mini-tour by the Texas-based mythological occult metal trio since the release of Abzu – the second of a planned trilogy of recordings.

Metal Superstars Reinvent Michael Jackson’s Biggest Hits On A New Tribute Album

Posted in Heavy Metal, heavy metal albums, Metal, metal bands, metal music, Music, rock albums, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , , , on October 23, 2013 by Metal Odyssey

Michael Jackson Thriller cover - promo - 2013 - med res

Performances by Danny Worsnop of ASKING ALEXANDRIA, Chuck Billy of TESTAMENT, Elias Soriano of NONPOINT, Lajon Witherspoon of SEVENDUST, Phil Campbell of MOTÖRHEAD, Doug Pinnick of KING’S X, Angelo Moore of FISHBONE, Priya Panda of DIEMONDS, Chris Jericho of FOZZY, Corey Glover of LIVING COLOUR and more!

______________________________________________

Los Angeles, CA – Just in time for Halloween, a scarily impressive alliance of metal and hard rock luminaries has formed to create one of the most depraved abominations of musical crossbreeding in history – an all metal tribute to the King Of Pop, Michael Jackson, available on CD starting October 22! Never before have such quintessential pop hits as “Beat It,” “Thriller,” “Billy Jean” and “Man In The Mirror” been so completely transformed, substituting softly stylized synths with crunchy, distorted guitars, replacing the pitter patter of programmed beats with pulverizing double bass acoustic drums, and topping it off with some of the finest, most powerful vocals in metal.

When completed, these reinventions pay due respect to the expertly crafted melodies and songs that made Michael Jackson one of the most beloved figures in all of music, and offer legions of metalheads a reason to simultaneously grab their crotches and throw the horns in celebration! \m/ \m/

Michael Jackson Thriller cover - promo - 2013 - med res

Spearheaded by producer/musician Bob Kulick, who also helped in the arrangement of these cover versions, the project was in his words a “labor of love” for all involved. Exclaims Kulick, “We made these awesome songs kick ass while still being faithful to the original versions. Add killer players like Doug Aldrich, Billy Sheehan, Bruce Kulick, Rudy Sarzo, Tony Franklin, Craig Goldy, Bumblefoot, Phil Campbell and you’ve got some real MAGIC!”

Rudy Sarzo, a stalwart of the metal scene as a member of both Quiet Riot and Queensrÿche, reflects, “Michael Jackson’s music is synonymous with iconic rockers such as Eddie Van Halen, Steve Stevens and Slash. So it’s only fitting that the rock community pays tribute to this legendary artist with Metal Mike!” And Fishbone’s Angelo Moore expresses great enthusiasm for his contribution, saying “I never thought I would hear myself doing a cover of ‘The Way You Make Me Feel,’ but it’s an honor and a dream come true. We put a different twist on it to give it a whole new light, or maybe I should say a whole new dark!”

Michael Jackson Thriller cover - promo - 2013 - med res

In addition to the legends Kulick enlisted, several of today’s modern metal figures also contributed, including Elias Soriano of Nonpoint, who comments, “It was my pleasure to do this tribute to MJ. My admiration for the talent and history he has given to music overall will be hard to replace. My only wish is that I did him justice with my performance.” Jason Myers, of Icarus Witch, one of the current flag bearers in the traditional metal scene, declares, “When we were approached by Cleopatra to contribute to the Michael Jackson tribute we were honored (due to the legendary talent already on board), but a bit skeptical about how our fans would react…Choosing an unorthodox hit took a bit of pressure off and allowed us to put more of ourselves into the track.”

Finally, bassist Tony Franklin, who has worked with everyone from Led Zeppelin’s Jimmy Page to Pink Floyd’s David Gilmour to Whitesnake, confirms the surprise and astonishment many felt during the creation of the album, “The first thing I noticed was how easily these out-and-out pop songs translated to the metal genre. That is the sign of, one, a great song and, two, a great production and arrangement.” He goes on to note that it wasn’t just the songs that were transformed when Metal met Pop on these recordings; the performers themselves were transformed. He states, “It was very cool to see how the guest artists interpreted these songs as it brought out a different side of them – a side we wouldn’t usually hear.”
