FLAGMAN’s Before The Blast Is Out Now

Posted in alternative metal, avant-garde metal, Metal, metal music, Music, music news, news with tags , , , , , , on October 18, 2025 by Metal Odyssey

Alternative/avant-garde metal unit FLAGMAN has unleashed its newest EP, Before the Blast.

Based in Seattle and riddled with ADHD, FLAGMAN has carved out its own niche in the metal community with a sound best described as “the lovechild of Primus, Mike Patton, and System of a Down.”

Before the Blast is now streaming on BandcampSpotify and Apple Music.

Watch the official music video for the song “The Punishment Committee” at youtu.be/yn8LwucYoXA?si=pGCSmxwjyAxty9Tz.

Despite various lineup changes, touring challenges, and the many other hurdles that accompany bands in the modern age, FLAGMAN has spent the last 10 years living the ‘never say die’ mantra. The band has built a reputation based on a boundary-pushing approach to songwriting and explosive live performances, sharing the stage with acts such as Sleepytime Gorilla Museum, Battles, Man On Man, Melvinator, Hed PE, and more.

With Before the Blast, the band leans heavily into the avant-garde tendencies, weaving angular riffs, manic rhythms, and industrial flair into an experience that is both urgent and unhinged.

Catch FLAGMAN live:
10/30 – Sacramento, CA @ The Starlet Room

For over three decades, Karsten Hamre, the heart and soul of Penitent, has consistently crafted dark and eerie melodies to accompany his introspective poetry. His unique personal journey has fueled a creative output that feels revitalized, like a complete restart.

Penitent has been a significant name in dark music since the early 1990s, exploring themes of loss, pain, and melancholy through their distinctive musical art. Founded by Karsten Hamre in 1994 to combine his “mad poetry” with music, the band released their debut album Melancholia in 1996 on Cold Meat Industry, quickly establishing their unique sound of sad and somber synth music with spoken word. Over the years, Penitent has evolved, incorporating elements of neo-classical, martial industrial, and more, always driven by Hamre’s artistic vision.

Mr. Bungle was formed in an impoverished lumber and fishing town by a trio of curious, volatile teenagers. Trey Spruance, Mike Patton and Trevor Dunn beget the amorphous “band” in 1985 up in Humboldt County, Calif., sifting through a variety of members until 1988 when drummer Danny Heifetz and saxophonist Bär McKinnon joined the group. In 1989, Mr. Bungle signed to Warner Bros. Records. No one really knows how this happened and it remains a complete mystery that even the algorithms of the internet can’t decode. Up until 2000 they released three albums (Mr. Bungle in 1991, Disco Volante in 1995 and California in 1999), toured a good portion of the Western hemisphere and avoided any sort of critical acclaim.

Some argue that the band subsequently broke up but there is also no proof of this. What is true is that they took 20 years off from performing under said moniker while they pursued various other musics that, in contrast, paid the rent. In 2020, a different iteration of Mr. Bungle emerged, pairing the original trio of Dunn, Patton and Spruance with Anthrax’s Scott Ian and former Slayer drummer Dave Lombardo for a proper release of the Eureka-bred band’s unreleased demo, The Raging Wrath of the Easter Bunny.

“We are looking forward to the tour in Europe, especially because we will be visiting some cities for the first time,” said the bassist Doris Yeh. “CHTHONIC’s music is full of Oriental martial art spirits and traditional music; we are confident that the blend of traditional elements and heavy metal could bring some very different sensations to those audiences.”

Chthonic - Bu-Tik - promo cover pic - 2013

CHTHONIC released their seventh studio recording, Bú-Tik,in North America via Spinefarm Records US on June 25, 2013. Bú-Tik was recorded at Sweden’s Sweetspot Studio by producer Rickard Bengtson, who also worked on 2011’s critically lauded Takasago Army full-length. Called “a masterful and elegant tradition served underneath soaring thrash-influenced guitars, pummeling drums and a vocal performance that is absolutely stellar from an overlooked vocalist,” by About.com, Bú-Tik is centered around the story of the 228 Massacre, the Bú-Tik Palace and the Mirror Of Retribution, and highlights what bassist Doris Yeh describes as “righteous violence, justifiable defense, and the armed spirits.” The cover image depicts the fighting spirit of a girl with albinism.

To order, Bú-Tik point your browser HERE.

Critical Praise:

“‘Next Republic’ and ‘Supreme Pain for the Tyrant’ demand your attention from the start, only to blow you away with an epic and memorable chorus. The soaring emotional register of ‘Between Silence and Death’ is unforgettable. And the female vocal parts, though used sparingly, sound exquisite in ‘Set Fire to the Island’ and ‘Defenders of Butik Palace.’ Bú-Tik is a solid album which will earn CHTHONIC many new symphonic oriental fans without alienating the band’s long-time following. 8/10″ – Metal Injection

“…a solid album full of epic moments. Fans of symphonic or melodic death metal are likely to enjoy it, as Chthonic have yet again delivered a unique and memorable album that no other band could have made.” – HeavyBlogIsHeavy

“Symphonic black metal gets an oriental overhaul for a fantastic result.4/5” – Metal Underground

OvO - band promo pic - #1 - 2013

Genre-collapsing noiseniks, OvO, are pleased to announce the release of their new album, Abisso, on November 4th via the vessel of all things Italian and loud, Supernatual Cat.

The duo, made up of Bruno Dorella on a stripped back drum kit and Stefania Pedretti handling vocals and guitars, are entering their thirteenth year together, and are showing no signs of relenting in their sonic exploration.

OvO’s live repertoire has seen them play everywhere; from Europe to Mexico to Israel and everywhere in between, alongside a host of sound-benders including Nadja, KK Null, Thurston Moore, Jim O’Rourke, Rollerball, Thrones, SubArachnoidSpace, Zenigeva, Lightning Bolt, Sleepytime Gorilla Museum, Estradasphere, Steve Mc Kay, Trencher, Ludicra, Bill Horist, USA Is a Monster, White Mice, Bastard Noise, Zu, Larsen, Jarboe, and A Hawk and a Hacksaw. Having truly mastered the art of crafting sharp and incredibly loud dynamic noise, OvO’s sound veers from bellyache sludge to simmering and shimmering compositions that ooze rock ‘n’ roll from punk-stained pores.

Stay tuned for further OvO details in the coming weeks.

BANGLADEAFY – Explosive Tech/Spazz NYC Duo To Release New EP

Posted in avant garde music, avant-garde metal, Metal, metal music, Music, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , , on June 13, 2013 by Metal Odyssey

Bangladeafy - promo band pic - 2013 - #1

NYC-based duo BANGLADEAFY are prepared to release their new EP, a capsule of musical mayhem containing a burst of the most bewilderingly fun metallic fusion out there.

With rabid rolls and pummeling percussion fueled with nutbar fingertapping, cerebellum-convulsing time change-ups, sporadic keyboard-interloping and the vocalizations and a general disregard for rulebooks, off-the-chain twosome BANGLADEAFY fiercely perpetuates an original style of technical extreme music defying genre classifications and merging in a melee that’ll have jazz aficionados fighting prog critics while the tech metal fans bang their own faces off in their own anomalous sequences.

While dropping riffery and percussion that is jagged and technical yet at once cohesive and succinct, this duo bears more than just a whack style and catchy name. BANGLADEAFY basically breaks down the band to the core, fusing the Bangladeshi origins of blazing drummer Atif Haq with the actual physical impairment of bassist/pianist/vocalist Jon Ehlers, the multi-instrumentalist having been born with sensio-neural hearing loss, alongside his two sisters. Disability aside, the intensely technical and somehow still laid-back basslines this musical assassin drops will floor critics and fans alike paired with is cohort’s jacked-up percussive attack.

______________________________________

Following their self-released full-length This Is Your Brain On Bugs amidst other random recordings since their full-on inception in 2009, BANGLADEAFY has completed their newest display of jam-band-gone-homicidal musical intensity, now preparing it for disbursement as The Briefcase; a magnificent six-song EP that lays out more face-melting proficiency in under fifteen minutes than most so-called “tech” bands could ever visualize. The band will self-release the tracks through a direct cooperation with their cohorts at the oddball/prog-tech outlet Nefarious Industries on July 9th.

As more info on The Briefcase nears disclosure, BANGLADEAFY will hit the locals with a wave of live dates, playing shows in Jersey, Long Island and Brooklyn this week with Resolution 15, Torrential Downpour and headliners Car Bomb.

Stay tuned for full info on what’s in The Briefcase, new shows and much more on these zany BANGLADEAFY dudes in the coming days. For now sink into some live footage of the band engaging the public including a live portrayal of  Show Me The Gold and Dumpster Fire from the new EP and more RIGHT HERE.

TRILLION RED – PureGrainAudio.com Streaming Trillion Red’s Metaphere In Full

Posted in avant-garde metal, avant-garde music, dark metal, Metal, metal music, Music, progressive metal, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , , , on October 18, 2012 by Metal Odyssey

Dark Progressive Avant-Garde Metal entity Trillion Red has teamed with PureGrainAudio.com to offer a full album stream of the band’s forthcoming release Metaphere. The album becomes available on October 23rd via badGod Music, but can be heard in its entirety at this location: http://puregrainaudio.com/audio/trillion-red-metaphere-album-stream-exclusive-world-premiere

Taking his cerebral brand of auditory darkness to a new level, Trillion Red mastermind Patrick Brown is one of metal’s few musicians who can legitimately claim to have discovered new musical territory with his newest creation.

Metaphere is available for pre-order at http://badgodmusic.com/ and http://badgodmusic.bandcamp.com/album/metaphere.

“I would call the album the deconstruction and recreation of modern extreme music. Patrick of Trillion Red will be remembered as an innovator years after they are gone sadly to say. This maybe album of the year right now for me…” – Absolute Zero

“I would give you ‘Trillions’ of reasons to hear this magnificent work.” – Heavy Hard Metalmania

If it is singularity, the tried, and tested, or just bizarre that you want, don’t bother looking any further. However, if you yearn for ‘new’ and ‘engaging’, something that antagonizes and simultaneously calms the soul-this LP is for you.

Metaphere is Trillion Red’s debut full-length after last year’s Two Tongues EP. This LP mightily sheds ‘the disconnects’ of Two Tongues, and unleashes a united and firm mark onto the Dark Progressive Avant-Garde Metal sound. It showcases the enormous leap Patrick has taken in creating soundscapes that alternate between heavy and hammering structures, to ambient interludes that all come together to create a twisted musical abstract.

Trillion Red is firmly rooted both thematically and musically in the radical emotions of the human experience. Despite the existential and intangible subject matter, the struggle between darkness and light is the core concept throughout Metaphere, something which everyone can relate and derive inspiration.

This to be enjoyed and savored as a boundless experience that flows seamlessly from beginning to end. Take further passes, and time after time, your ears will gain further insight to what is being said. With a passion to create a new and inspirational musical experience, Trillion Red exceeds expectations with the release of Metaphere.

Close your eyes and let your ears tell the story.
