Spanish Hard Rock bruisers ’77 have debuted the first track off their upcoming third full-length album, Maximum Rock n’ Roll. The song, entitled Down and Dirty, is streaming now:

’77 had the following to say regarding Maximum Rock n’ Roll:

“We obviously wrote music in typical ’77 fashion  such as ‘Down and Dirty’ or ‘Stay away from Water,’ tunes that will make you bang your head and raise your fist in the air while singing the choruses. Once more we recorded live in the studio, supervised by Fred Estby this time behind the mics and mixing desk, and we are really happy with the sound we got: no tricks, no FX; just Maximum Rock and Roll played as loud as possible.”

The band has also unveiled the cover art, designed by urban artist and AC/DC enthusiast Abdul Vas, for Maximum Rock n’ Roll:

King Kobra - II - promo cover pic

Have a Good Time, the new and contagiously Rockin’ music video from Hard Rock Legends, KING KOBRA, is written about the Rock n’ Roll Club, Vamp’d, in Las Vegas, Nevada. I’ve been digging this KING KOBRA song and video like there’s no freaking tomorrow! Whoa! Hallelujah! And… Metal be thy name!! Therefore, since KING KOBRA’s music video, Have A Good Time, has been pumping-up my Heavy Rock adrenaline for a few weeks now, I shall declare:

KING KOBRA’S Have A Good Time Music Video Is: Stone’s METAL Pick Of The Day!

Pay close attention (if you like) while this music video psyches-you-out… cause there’s some very cool and famous dudes that take part in this video: Vinnie Paul, Ace Frehley, Zakk Wylde, Ron Jeremy, Carrot Top, a hot gal dancing on the stage and (of course) Danny “The Count” Koker, to name a many few! Whoa again!

KING KOBRA II Was Released On July 9th, 2013, Via Frontiers Records.

SAMMY HAGAR “Three Lock Box” – 1982 Album Is: Stone’s METAL Pick Of The Day!

Sammy Hagar - Three Lock Box - promo cover pic - Large!

SAMMY HAGAR – The Red Rocker. Rock ‘N Roll Legend. Sammy Hagar. Back in the day, any smart dude knew enough to have a Sammy Hagar cassette or two in the car; especially Three Lock Box. Why is that Stone? Well… chicks really dug Sammy Hagar, back then, of course! Ah, those were the  days. Oops… daze. Come to think of it, these same gals today (must) seem to think Sammy Hagar is still a Rockin’ cool dude. My wife (basically) melts apart at the seams whenever Sammy is on television or his Rock ‘N Roll is cranking! I don’t mind. It’s Sammy Hagar, the dude epitomizes Rock ‘N Roll cool. Metal be thy name.

I can remember this album being released, like it was yesterday. An old high school buddy of mine bought Three Lock Box on vinyl right away. We listened to this album quite a bit too. I was a sophomore in high school back in ’82, the year of this album’s release. I eventually snagged Three Lock Box on cassette and I actually still own it! It’s in a water-proof container somewhere in my basement. My prehistoric cassette collection has survived over the decades; regardless of natural disasters and downsizing!

___________________________

Admittedly, I still get psyched-out-of-my-Metal-mind from the tracks: Three Lock Box, Your Love Is Driving Me Crazy and Remember The Heroes. All three of those songs were HUGE radio hits, back when FM meant something. Since his early days with Montrose, through his Van Hagar glory years and up to the present day, there consistently has been an it-factor that Sammy Hagar has  glowing from his Rock ‘N Roll persona, voice and guitar. Whatever that “it” is, none of us can walk into Walmart to buy it… that’s for certain!

My Best Metal Buddy, Scott Coverdale, had suggested to me a long while ago to pick Three Lock Box as Stone’s METAL Pick Of The Day. When Scott came up with this idea, I felt it was a no-brainer! I just don’t know what took me so long to write about it! Nevertheless, I have written about Sammy Hagar’s Three Lock Box and it is forever secured as Stone’s METAL Pick Of The Day! Amen and… Whoa.

Tracii Guns’ League Of Gentlemen

The First Record (Shrapnel Records)

______________________________________________

Back on June 18th, Tracii Guns’ League Of GentlemenThe First Record was released via Shrapnel Records. What a record it is! Classic Rock is solidified, within the gilded-lined and melodic songs on The First Record; the glorious spillover of retro sound from this must-own record is captivating!

The First Record is easily one of the very best in Rock and Hard Rock albums in 2013. The vocals of Scott Foster Harris are always instantly memorable for me; he truly is one of the finest vocalists in Rock music today, in my honest opinion.

Then there is Tracii Guns. This Rock ‘N Roll legend should take his rightful bow; for this band he has assembled have created musical magic together that’s called The First Record. I pray it’s a first of many more to come. Metal be thy name.

Tracii Guns’ League Of Gentleman The Sound – Is Stone’s METAL Pick Of The Day!

KEV MOORE Of WITCH CROSS – Reveals What Album He Cannot Live Without!

Kev Moore - live concert photo!

Kev Moore

_________________________________

This post marks the first of (hopefully) many features that showcase musicians and the album they cannot live without. Every music lover has that one album they cannot live without! I would think, anyways! Metal be thy name.

The only parameters I’ve asked from each gracious participant is that they not choose an album of their own and they can answer in as many words as they would like. Our first participant is Kev Moore! Kev has a Rock ‘N Roll resume that is exceptional, is a multi-instrumentalist and is the lead vocalist/songwriter for the legendary Witch Cross.

Here’s Kev Moore’s album he cannot live without, in his own words:

_________________________________

Way back in the hazy days of the early 1970’s, barely a month went by without a band releasing an album of note. They were the times. Rock music was gaining momentum, approaching perhaps one of several peaks from a commercial standpoint, unknowingly about to crash and burn upon the rocks of insipid disco and punk, the latter ironically fuelling the NWOBHM and a whole new era. But as the 70’s dawned, the giants were already walking among us. Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, Deep Purple, releasing masterworks one after the other. As I look back through time’s kaleidoscope, I marvel at my good fortune to have been born into this era of Rock creativity.

But the album that I cannot live without, at the time, marked a sea-change, a huge gamble for the band concerned. It introduced a singer to the world that, up until that moment had sung only part-time, worked in a boutique in the Industrial north of England, and whose only publicity photo was one of him as a boy scout, which he duly sent to the group in question. It is to his eternal credit that he seized the opportunity given to him and never faltered when thrust into the limelight, and to the band’s credit that they recognised something in this raw, untested vocalist. This five piece supergroup were not just replacing their frontman however, they also needed a bassist. They were huge, and replacing two-fifths of the band was a decision not to be taken lightly.

The bassist they settled on, although having three albums and some American touring under his belt, was far from a household name himself however. But he was possessed of something else. One of the greatest voices in rock.  When combined with his fluidity, his virtuosity, his feel, on the bass, it was an irresistible combination for me as a young 16 year-old drummer. The drums were gone. From that moment on, I was a bass playing vocalist. Something I still am, almost forty years later. This album – BURN by DEEP PURPLE and their bass player/singer GLENN HUGHES, changed my life forever, and it is therefore THE album I simply cannot live without.

DEEP PURPLE - Burn - promo cover pic - #56

Don’t get me wrong, Coverdale impressed me – as a twin vocal attack, no-one, but NO-ONE has ever come close. But Glenn’s soaring screaming harmonies, his soulful vocal sections, a magnificent counterpoint to The Cov’s Blues wail, coupled with his fluid, driving bass runs, stole my heart. “That”, I declared to an otherwise empty living room, “is what I want to do.”  It is quite simply the reason I am a professional musician to this day, and I’m grateful that I’ve had the opportunity to meet Glenn on several occasions, the first of which gave me the chance to tell him so.

The album itself is a masterpiece. Comprising just 8 tracks, one of which is a fairly throwaway instrumental, it is still nevertheless one of the greatest rock albums of all time. Because the previous seven tracks just hit you over the head. There is no pause for breath. The title track is surely one of the openers of all-time. It absolutely takes no prisoners. the band is on fire – as if to say, “think we made a mistake? think again!” Both vocalists are magnificent, Paice is a drum solo all over the track, but never overshadowing it, Blackmore’s machine gun riff is unstoppable, Glenn’s bass weaves in and out with ease and the late Jon Lord sprinkles classical magic over the whole shebang. It is simply awesome. You barely have time to draw breath before the Vanilla-Fudge inspired riffage of ‘Might just take your life’ grabs you by the throat. Coverdale wails and moans, the whiplash crack of the snare, then Glenn’s bass is all over it. Coverdale owns the verse, Blackmore’s counterpoint guitar subtle…then Hughes’ harmonies lift us into the Chorus. It’s glorious stuff. Coverdale and Hughes bring a swagger and boogie to the band that wasn’t there before. Hughes then takes over vocals, wonderfully contrasting Cov, and the song soars because of it. Lordy fires up the Hammond, and we’re off…what’s not to love?

Kev Moore - Solo Pic - Promo - #10

Kev Moore

A honky-tonk piano drags us into “Lay Down, Stay Down”, Blackmore and Hughes doubling another classic riff while Coverdale and Hughes trade the vocal line by line. Other bands of the day must’ve hung their heads in despair when they heard these two big guns firing. Their vocals blend superbly on the choruses, greater than the sum of their parts. Paice is all over the track, jazz-influenced fills, the band is really swinging. Something all the best rock drummers can do. The tone of Ritchie’s guitar on the solo is to die for, no hundred notes a minute here, just an amazing SOUND. Then we’re into Side 1’s closer, ‘Sail Away’. Probably one of my favourite riffs of all time, it is funk-laden rock monster, with a deep-throated Coverdale setting the scene, the higher-octane Hughes taking it on to another level. the song is full of menace, it is superb stuff.  Hughes’ bass pops and shimmies all over the chorus, he owns it. It should be illegal; for one guy to have this much talent.  Thank God he conquered his demons and can still share it with us.

You could be forgiven for thinking they’d shot their bolt with a side one like that, but flip it over and you’re kicked in the teeth with ‘You Fool No-one’, perhaps one of the greatest duets you’ll hear this side of heaven, for that’s what it is. It might rocket along like freight train, propelled by Paice’s incredible rhythm track, but it’s still a duet. When Glenn sings “Gonna make you live to regret it!” you know you would sell your own Grandmother to sing like that.

“What’s Goin’ On Here”  just exudes joy, you can hear a band on fire, long before the rot set in, revelling in their abilities. In a song full of star turns, Jon Lord’s glorious saloon bar piano is top of the bill in this one, I just break into a huge grin every time the solo kicks in. This is quintessential, good-time rock’n’roll.

The instrumental A200 aside, the closer for me is ‘Mistreated’. This is where Coverdale, from the grim industrial town of Middlesboro in the North of England, growing up in the shadow of local hero Paul Rodgers of Free, finally gets the appropriate showcase to sing his blues. And boy, does he sing them. This one of the great modern blues songs. Just think for a moment….to be surrounded by the likes of Blackmore, Lord and Paice, and one of the great vocalists in Hughes, how intimidating must it have been to deliver that song?  He nailed his colours to the mast that day. The interplay between Blackmore’s guitar and Coverdale’s vocal is sublime.

Burn is an album I have played regularly, without fail, since the day I bought it back in ’74. I know every note, every nuance. It is in my DNA. It is the reason I am a working musician. It is a masterpiece, and hell no, I cannot live without it.

Dubbed “…the best Zep band going anywhere,” by Time Out New York, “…the closest thing to seeing the real Led Zeppelin,” by The Dallas Observer and commended for their “authentic raw flair,” by Atlanta’s Backstage Beat, who note that it’s, “hard to believe how balls-out fantastic they are,” LED ZEPPELIN 2 continue to reap critical accolades for their larger-than-life Zep reenactment. Rather than a kitschy “greatest hits” show however, you get to experience Zeppelin as Zeppelin would have played live themselves, playing deep cuts and classic tracks from the entire catalog, and occasionally entire ZEPPELINperformances from specific shows and sets from the band’s storied history.

 CRITICAL PRAISE:

LED ZEPPELIN 2 demonstrated an unparalleled ability to mimic the original… the energy in the room reverberated as the band owned the stage.” – The Third Word

“There are a lot of ZEP tributes out there, but this one’s our favorite, not least because its members fully immerse themselves in the musicianship and style of the four classic-rock heavyweights. That Yakuza howler Bruce Lamont does a mean Robert Plant is icing on the cake.” – Time Out Chicago

“…these imitators get the LED out in a way your battered copy of Physical Graffiti never will, right down to the unearthly tones of guitarist Paul Kamp’s bowed Les Paul solos. Sure, purists are still holding out for the real deal’s tour, but even if that happens, it’s doubtful that Robert Plant can wail the opening lines of ‘Black Dog’ as well as his LED ZEPPELIN 2 counterpart, Bruce Lamont,” – The Onion

“The band is on its way out of the minor leagues, and is now playing bigger venues for a generation of fans too young to have ever experienced the genuine article.” – The New Yorker

EVILYN STRANGE ARE MOURNING PHOEBE – It’s been a long time coming…

New Album Mourning Phoebe Is Out Now, Via Thirteen 772 Music

____________________________________

From EVILYN STRANGE:

The path trodden by most UK Rock bands since the
glory days of The Beatles, Sabbath, Maiden, Priest, The Who, Purple
and Zeppelin has been a lonely one. Punk cleared the way for Duran
Duran, Culture Club, Wham! and ultimately Rick Astley… Vive la
Revolution!

Shunned in their home country it wasn’t easy for Brits playing
‘classic rock’.  Even a minor blip in the mid to late 80’s only
produced success for Whitesnake (who sacked their British members) and
Def Leppard. Bands like FM, The Quireboys, and Thunder had to take a
back seat to American rockers such as Bon Jovi, Aerosmith, Poison,
Metallica, and Guns N’ Roses.  Said UK bands then had to watch as
grunge flooded the plains leaving them up sh*t creek without even a
raft, let alone paddle.  As this happened the UK looked to Peter
Andre, Take That and eventually The Spice Girls as its major players.

Evilyn Strange have been around since the Britpop darlings Suede,
Blur, Radiohead, Pulp and Oasis.  Laughed at by the press since day
one for having long hair and playing guitar solo’s it hasn’t been easy
for the Anglo Swedish trio.  Did they care? As Adam Ant once said,
‘Ridicule is nothing to be scared of…’

So here’s Mourning Phoebe, the flawed (and all the more perfect for
it) album by the type of band that the UK doesn’t want to exist.  They
won’t win a Brit Award like Boyzone, and they will NEVER be cool
enough to appear on MTV… but they can just about live with
that.

Kind regards,

Grandpa Strange.

Guitar Icon Merrell Fankhauser Revisits Jimi Hendrix’s Legendary ‘Rainbow Bridge’ In New Documentary

Posted in classic rock, Guitar, guitarists, Hard Rock, hard rock news, Music, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , , , on July 14, 2013 by Metal Odyssey

0156 Rainbow Bridge DVD Sleeve V3.indd

London, UK – Rainbow Bridge was a peculiar 1972 film featuring Jimi Hendrix (who had died two years before) and a cast of local eccentrics using Hendrix’s music and a whole slew of UFO sightings to explore their spirituality. 41 years later, musician and filmmaker Merrell Fankhauser revisits the film to explore its message more fully. The Rainbow Bridge Revisited documentary was really Maui journalist Steve Omar’s idea, and Merrell and Steve produced it together. The two had fun looking up and interviewing the original cast of the 1972 Jimi Hendrix movie ‘Rainbow Bridge’ that was filmed on Maui. It was interesting to hear what they had to say about hanging out with Hendrix making the movie. The one-hour DVD documentary also features some great surfing and music by Merrell Fankhauser, The Space Patrol and Omar and The Wavespies. The package includes a 12-song soundtrack.

Merrell explains: “As you know I lived on Maui for 14 years and I moved there in ‘73 just a year after the Jimi Hendrix ‘Rainbow Bridge’ film came out. And when I moved there I met a lot of people that were in the movie, and a lot of them were hippies, surfers and cosmic people that were seeing UFOs, and they said Jimi was really into the whole UFO thing, and that there were even some hovering about when they were shooting over there. So we contacted the ones that we still knew were on Maui and we went over and interviewed them and it was really interesting what some of them had to say about hanging out with Hendrix and everything. Then we went down to Southern California, because some of them lived down there, and we interviewed a few of those, so we’ve got some really interesting interviews with an insight into some of the things that were going on with that movie with Hendrix that didn’t come out. In the original ‘Rainbow Bridge’, it follows Pat Hartley the actress from the Sunset Strip over to O’ahu and then to Maui where she meets all these characters, and ultimately Jimi. And the message, because of all of her travels and the way it was put together, kind of got lost a little bit in the different scenes and things. I talked to one of the guys from Warner Brothers who was in on the editing and he said that when they brought the film over it was in all of these bags and there was sand in it and they were almost afraid to put it on their machine, and had to clean it all and they kept going through this stuff and it was just a lot of hippies talking about cosmic stuff and getting high on drugs, and everybody kept saying ‘Where’s Jimi, where’s Jimi? Where’s the concert’ You know they were afraid they weren’t going to have enough to make the movie really good, but finally they got to the ‘Concert’ footage. So what we did, we kind of condensed these interviews down and we segue into some really great surfing on big waves over there, because a lot of the people that were interviewed were surfers and we have old footage of them surfing, and then we cut to surfing footage from now. I have about ten of my newer instrumental surf songs in there with the surfing, and then it goes to a couple of band performances – there were two Maui bands featured on the soundtrack: Omar and The Wavespies and The Space Patrol – the lead singer, Les Potts,  was in the original ‘Rainbow Bridge’ movie.”

0156 Rainbow Bridge DVD Sleeve V3.indd

Rainbow Bridge Revisited CD Tracks: 1. All Along The Watchtower, 2. Last Wave at Hanalei, 3. Wild Gyrations, 4. Surfin 101, 5. Waterfall, 6. Hookipa, 7. Mother Sea, 8. The Wind Cried Maui, 9. Monster Swell, 10. Surf Rage, 11. The Wall, 12. Calling From A Star.

Merrell Fankhauser is considered one of the main innovators of surf music and Psychedelic Folk Rock, and is widely known as the leader of the instrumental surf group The Impacts who had the international hit Wipeout. His travels from Hollywood to his 15 year jungle experience on the island of Maui have been documented in numerous music books and magazines in the US and Europe. Merrell has gained legendary international status throughout the field of Rock music; his credits include over 300 songs published and released. Merrell Fankhauser has presented a number of television programs over the years including ‘California Music’, ‘Route 66 TV Live’, and in 2001 he began hosting a music show called ‘Tiki Lounge’ that airs on the California Central Coast, Southern California, Hawaii and parts of the East Coast.

As reported on the KISS Facebook page:

Subscription variant cover featuring the “adult Gene” is by Bruce Timm.

The retailer incentive cover featuring the first KISS album cover redo is by Jose Holder and Jeremy Colwell.

Stone Says: I really dig the “adult Gene” cover version! Whoa! Nice job Bruce Timm! The other cover is done superb as well; hopefully another generation of KISS fans can be grown from these comics! I didn’t subscribe to this KISS KIDS comic; I guess the “adult gene” cover won’t be available at newsstands due to it being for “subscription only.” Maybe I’ll locate it elsewhere down the Metal road.

If I see these KISS KIDS comics at the newsstand, I’ll probably buy 1 copy at a time and file ’em with my KISS Kollection. I cannot help myself. As Cinderella’s Tom Keifer has sung: “Somebody Save Me”… then again, don’t save me! KISS FOREVER. Metal be thy name.
