SPEEDPIG – Hog Roast In Hell: This Metal EP Is On Fire!

SPEEDPIG – They’re raw. They’re Metal. They’re Stoner Metal. They’re a bit traditional with their Metal style. They’re underground… and they’re undisputedly on fire! SPEEDPIG is a ‘two man Stoner Metal tour-de-force’ as they call themselves on their website. Gaz and Mungo are their names. Bridgend, South Wales is where this diy Stoner Metal duo calls home and they are looking to invade all shores with their terrificly memorable EP aptly titled: Hog Roast In Hell. Yes, these two lads from the other side of the Atlantic can play some Metal and it sounds like they have a monumental ton of fun with it along the way.

Having SPEEDPIG cross my Metal path is reassuring in a way, that not all bands these days are trying to make a statement as to how clever they really are with “concept albums” or (enough already) deeply enriched themes taken from “reality”. Instead, Gaz and Mungo have created some Metal that you can crank the hell up after you’ve just called in sick and ordered pizza for breakfast. This is Metal you can crank up in the open field with a bonfire and keg of beers aplenty.

You don’t need a Berkley School of Music degree to understand that Metal needs to return to the days when songs were memorable and not boastfully epic length. Making songs that inevitably will have Metalheads playing loud should be the rule and not the exception. SPEEDPIG gets this. I advice my fellow Metalheads to play Hog Roast In Hell very loud, um, Metal be thy name.

This SPEEDPIG EP keeps a constant fired up tempo, while delivering a vibe & soul that is old school denim and leather. Hog Roast In Hell is all about the riff baby… and plenty of impressive shredding abounds too. The vocals of Gaz are a refreshing experience, one that reminds me of maybe how the late and legendary Bon Scott would sound if he decided to go hell-bent for leather on some smokin’ Stoner Metal.

I’ve enjoyed what SPEEDPIG has delivered with Hog Roast In Hell and look forward to their future Metal output. SPEEDPIG qualifies as a candidate for not only Stoner Metal fans to get into, Traditional Metal and Metal fans should find this talented duo just as bad-ass too. Get into the pig now, so you can tell all your friends down the Metal road that you were there when this Hog Roast In Hell started burning up!

ANA KEFR – Extreme Metal Band: Banned In Tupelo, Mississippi Due To Discrimination

Posted in Extreme Metal, Heavy Metal, heavy metal albums, heavy metal news, metal music, metal odyssey, Music, progressive metal, rock music, rock music news, world news with tags , , , , , , , , on September 17, 2011 by Metal Odyssey

Los Angeles, California-based extreme Progressive Metal band ANA KEFR (Arabic, meaning “I am Infidel”) have been forced to replace their Tupelo, Mississippi date on their upcoming Zephyr US National Tour due to discriminationANA KEFR, whose music is complimented by lyrical themes of militant atheism and humanist philosophy, have been deemed unwelcome by venues local to Tupelo, one of the band’s handful of scheduled dates in the Bible Belt.

Commented ANA KEFR frontman Rhiis D. Lopez: “We’re seriously disappointed that we’ve been forced to re-schedule our October 11 date in Tupelo, and apologize to fans who were planning to attend. This was to be a benefit show, organized by a local non-profit organization to raise relief funds for victims of natural disasters in Mississippi. There were 3 other bands scheduled to support us on the show and now all 4 bands have found themselves shut out from the opportunity. Apparently, to the owner of Good Time Charlie’s and numerous others who flooded the promoter with hate and intolerance on our account, aiding victims of natural disasters is trumped by whether or not one believes in their merciful and benevolent religion. Their vicious stupidity only further strengthens and reinforces the truth of ANA KEFR, and it is a shame that faith must come before charity and philanthropy.”

The October 11th date has been replaced with a scheduled performance at Churchill’s in Miami, Florida on the same date. The official Zephyr US Tour 2011 schedule, in support of ANA KEFR‘s recently released second full-length album The Burial Tree (II), is as follows:

October 5 – Phoenix, AZ – Chaser’s

October 6 – Austin, TX – Headhunter’s

October 7 – Jackson, MS – Sam’s Lounge

October 8 – New Orleans, LA – Checkpoint Charlie

October 9 – Metairie, LA – Babylon

October 11 – Miami, FL – Churchill’s

October 12 – Panama City, FL – C-Level

October 13 – Birmingham, AL – The Nick

October 14 – Atlanta, GA – The Little Tree

October 15 – Columbia, SC – Outt Saloon

October 16 – Charlotte, NC – The Bonu5 Room

October 19 – Pittsburgh, PA – Pounder’s

October 21 – Ithaca, NY – The Haunt

October 22 – Ithaca, NY – WVBR radio show

October 23 – Cincinnati, OH – Bogart’s

October 25 – St. Joseph, MO – Rock n Metal Room

October 26 – Wichita, KS – Kirby’s Beer Room

October 27 – Salt Lake City, UT – 5 Monkeys

October 28 – Seattle, WA – The Backstage Bar

October 29 – Portland, OR – Black Forest

October 30 – Seattle, WA – The Fun-house

November 1 – Portland, OR – Saratoga

November 2 – Fresno, CA – Babylon

November 4 – San Diego, CA – Kensington Club

November 5 – Los Angeles, CA – Whisky A Go-Go

Of the tour, Lopez had the following remarks: “We are looking forward to our first U.S. national tour, and can’t wait to meet and make new fans and friends. To our fans in Tupelo – one way or another, we can and will overcome this. See you all on the road!”

MORBID ANGEL “I Am Morbid” – Metal Odyssey’s #1 Contender For: “2011 Metal Song Of The Year”

Posted in Death Metal, Extreme Metal, Heavy Metal, heavy metal albums, heavy metal news, metal music, metal odyssey, Music, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , , , , , on September 14, 2011 by Metal Odyssey

MORBID ANGEL – Death Metal legends/pioneers Morbid Angel are back and nothing is gonna stand in their way. Morbid Angel has released their first full-length studio album in 8 years with Illud Divinum Insanus, released on June 7th, 2011 on Season of Mist. While this album is an experimental approach musically for Morbid Angel, the impressive constants I hear are the muscularity of Metal and Death Metal roots of this fierce band. This new Morbid Angel album also marks the return of the legendary David Vincent, aka Mr. Vincent on vocals, bass and keyboards.

Let’s just say that Morbid Angel’s I Am Morbid is the #1 contender for Metal Odyssey’s 2011 Metal Song Of The Year. This song annihilates false Metal. The commanding strength and dominating vibe within this song’s lyrics and Metal is completely mesmerizing to my senses. With it’s anthem leaning sound and feel, I Am Morbid is one song to raise the horns to the air with, while defying the plastic-headed think tanks of the world. Metal be thy name.

MORBID ANGEL:

Mr. Vincent – vocals, bass & keyboards

Trey Azagthoth – guitars

Destructhor – guitars

THE POODLES “I Want It All” – This Song and Music Video… Indubitably ROCKS!

THE POODLES – The song I Want It All by Sweden’s very famous Hard Rockin’ and Heavy Metalin’ band, The Poodles, has it all. Uplifting with its melodic vibrations and inspirational with its lyrics, I Want It All is a song that has motivated me recently, while trying to deal with crap that life sometimes throws my way. Take a listen to I Want It All for yourself below and maybe this is the song you need to pick yourself up with today.

I Want It All is the opening track from The Poodles 4th studio album: Performocracy. I’ve written before about this Performocracy album and I can’t recommend it highly enough. In my Metal opinion, The Poodles have released one of the years best in Melodic Heavy Metal/Hard Rock albums. Jakob Samuel on vocals is as underrated as they come and this band plays some damn memorable songs on Performocracy.

Performocracy was released in North America on May 3rd, 2011, via FRONTIERS RECORDS.

Alice Cooper – Welcome 2 My Nightmare: Releases September 13th, 2011! Some Metal Thoughts…

Posted in classic rock, Heavy Metal, heavy metal albums, heavy metal news, metal music, metal odyssey, Music, rock music, rock music news, Thrash Metal with tags , , , , , , , , on September 11, 2011 by Metal Odyssey

ALICE COOPER – As with the new Anthrax studio album (Worship Music),  the new Alice Cooper album Welcome 2 My Nightmare releases on Tuesday, September 13th, 2011. Call this “Super Heavy Metal Tuesday” or what! I never was offered any free promos of the new Anthrax or Alice Cooper, so I’ll be buying them both on Tuesday. (Apparently Metal Odyssey isn’t that famous and cool yet). Quite frankly I am more than willing to shell out the money for brand new Anthrax and Alice Cooper albums. It’s all about “supporting your bands” anyhow and I’ve strived to show strong support over the course of time for both Anthrax and Alice Cooper.

Will I do an album review for the new Alice Cooper album? I guess if I feel like it. Will I do an album review for the new Anthrax? Again, If I feel like it. Since the record companies and/or PR people for both Anthrax and Alice Cooper don’t want to get in touch with Stone, I’m in no hurry to review ’em. We’ll see what happens. I’m predicting I’ll be pleased with both though… I hope. For now, the FREE publicity is right here for both the record companies and bands… yippeee! Isn’t Stone such a swell guy?

* Alice Cooper – Welcome 2 My Nightmare is being released on Universal Music Group, um, Enterprises or something like that. Take your pick. Whatever. This Universal label has gotten in touch with me in the past, I did a cool album review for them and then they disappeared. Plus, this Universal label owes Stone an interview with Get Scared. I submitted questions to the label per their nagging request and then they never got back to me. Real UNPROFESSIONAL on their part. Do I sound like I’m bitching? Hell yes I am. Stone doesn’t like being taken advantage of by NO ONE. Especially when all the writing and publicity I do is for F’n FREE.

Welcome 2 My Nightmare – Track Listing:

ARCANE MALEVOLENCE – Wicked Turn Of the Vine: An Underground and Progressively Extreme, Death Metal Delicacy

Posted in Death Metal, Extreme Metal, Heavy Metal, heavy metal albums, heavy metal news, metal music, metal odyssey, Music, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , , , , , on September 6, 2011 by Metal Odyssey

ARCANE MALEVOLENCE – Yes, Extreme Metal is the cup of Metal tea for Connecticut’s Arcane Malevolence and they aren’t about to be pigeonholed into any particular Extreme sub-genre anytime soon. You see, what I’ve heard after several near hallucinatory listens of Wicked Turn of the Vine is an Extreme Metal bag of tricks that equates to one damn terrific Extreme delicacy upon my eardrums. This diy Metal militia is making some hefty noize in the Nutmeg State, so be prepared and have your survival shelter stocked and ready.

What exactly does Arcane Malevolence sound like? Imagine this, for a Metal second my fine Extreme Metal buddies out there… take a pissed off underground vibe and combine it with some Extreme, Blackened, Death Metal grooves, then add some Extreme Metal boogie and ballistic vocals, with some legendary MACABRE influence for good Metal measure. This all sounds Progressively Extreme, doesn’t it?

No, there is no nursery rhyme spoofing going on with Wicked Turn of the Vine, just a blend of Metal extremities that flexes a Murder Metal muscle or two. Where some Extreme Metal bands take their heaviness to a blueprint level of seriousness, leaving no room for experimentation, it’s Arcane Malevolence that seems to enjoy their fondness for Extreme musical exploration. I can’t imagine this band not having fun recording this album and playing live. Even with a vibe of letting it loose, the evilness of this bands lyrics and atmosphere comes across quite nicely throughout this album.

All the key Extreme Metal ingredients are heard on Wicked Turn of the Vine, in nailing down the clear Metal fact that my brain and ears have taken quite the Extreme wallop from Arcane Malevolence. There is never a boring twist or turn in the arrangements of the songs on this album, with plenty of tempo shifts and vocals that change like an extreme chameleon. There are times when Wicked Turn of the Vine sounds dastardly doomy and borderline stoner-psychedelic on guitar parts and this is the Metal personality of Arcane Malevolence, never really knowing what lurks around the corner is not such a terrible thing in Metal.

I’m impressed by the interchanging melodies and super speedy rhythm section of this band as well. Taking in Arcane Malevolence is like putting my ears up to an Extremely Progressive Metal kaleidoscope of sound. Wicked Turn of the Vine is equivalent to that horror movie you must watch again and again, just to take it all in. This is an album that can serve as both a Metal companion to Armageddon and that long drive to the dreaded in-laws, either way their both the same. Or to curb your underground Metal longing, you can choose to have Wicked Turn of the Vine as your Extreme Metal dietary supplement of choice, one that is a surefire means to serve you right… as it did for me.

Hey… this Wicked Turn of the Vine review is over. I said it’s over. Now go out and get your ears scorched by some Arcane Malevolence, buy their CD (or download from iTunes) and show some damn couth. Metal be thy name.

ARCANE MALEVOLENCE:

SEBASTIAN BACH – Kicking & Screaming: Heavy Metal Hallelujah! This Album ROCKS!

Posted in arena rock, Hard Rock, Heavy Metal, heavy metal albums, heavy metal news, metal music, metal odyssey, Music, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , , , , , on September 5, 2011 by Metal Odyssey

Sebastian Bach Kicking & Screaming – I love those cherished moments when a Rock N’ Roll hero is reborn. In the Metal case of Sebastian Bach, a Heavy Metal hero is reborn. The second solo album from Sebastian Bach, Kicking & Screaming, is to be released on September 23rd, 2011 via Frontiers Records. Better mark your Metal calendar for this one… cause it’s a blazing trip of melodic and dark edged Heavy Metal that kicks more ass than a pissed-off parochial school nun on steroids. Welcome back Sebastian, even if you never left the damn building after all!

If the title track Kicking & Screaming doesn’t knock your brains around in a whirlwind of Heavy Metal euphoria, then My Own Worst Enemy is gonna drop a flyin’ and Heavy Rockin’ elbow upon your Heavy Metal starved cranium. This album never seems to hold back a damn ounce of psyched-out fuel, making the high-octane experience, of listening to an entire Heavy Metal album once again… very much in vogue. Sebastian Bach can also take a Metal bow and know that he is once again, without a doubt from this Metalhead, one of our genre’s finest vocalists. His voice is a musical instrument, one which carries Kicking & Screaming to it’s profound psyche-out-nation heights.

Sebastian can snarl and scream with the very best of ’em, while also singing harmoniously through melodic and heavy Rockers: Caught In A DreamAs Long As I Got The Music and I’m Alive. If not for this being 2011, these three songs would be FM radio favorites and hit singles chart toppers. All the hot gals in their cougar spandex shall dance in the streets once again and shake their foundations! Sebastian Bach has brought back that damn fever of Arena Heavy Metal being a dominant force in the air once again! Metal be thy name and ring that F’n Metal bell… cause Sebastian Bach has told all the poser Rock and bubble gum Pop to go straight to hell!

Yes, Sebastian brings on the hard & heavy and with authority on Dirty Power. This song has the guitar muscle and rhythmic speed of a runaway Harley, being commandeered by the mighty vocals of Sebastian as it rips and erupts with what I consider Heavy Metal splendor. Nick Sterling never seems to give his guitar or bass a breather throughout this album of pumped-up Heavy Rockin’ ecstasy. Nick can shred. Nick can play. ‘Nuff said. The only breather for Nick on guitar is when John 5 steps in to lend his legendary licks on Tunnelvision. I’ll say that this song is so good it’s damn scary. A Heavy Metal song to get your head bangin’ and fists pumpin’ into the air… while Sebastian is screaming and crooning his Metal lovin’ heart out.

Bobby Jarzombek on drums is spot-on and such an insane listen. Sebastian Bach is complimented perfectly by Bobby’s drumming, bringing back those days when Heavy Metal wasn’t focused on blast beats and psychotic speed in order to sound bad-ass. Kicking & Screaming is bad-ass. Okay, is there a moment that is mellow on this album? Yes and it’s called Dream Forever. An up-tempo ballad that has me blushing cause I like the damn melody. Metal be thy name I’m becoming a ballad freak in my near golden years. Call them hot girls over wearing them cougar spandex… cause I want to see them all cry while they listen to Dream Forever.

Tell all the people who you see… Sebastian Bach has super revived a sound that once was thought to be extinct during the 90’s and has injected more modern-day relevance into his Metal than you could ever imagine. Play One Good Reason extremely loud and then give me one good reason as to why Kicking & Screaming is not a shining moment for Heavy Metal in 2011. Sebastian Bach’s second solo album has all the ingredients for my bellowing: must buy and crank it up insanely loud all you Metalhead mutha’s!

Now… I just have to convince my wife to dig out her ol’ cougar spandex… rrrrraaaawwwrrrrr

Queensrÿche – 10 Great Songs CD: A Potent Compilation Spanning A Legendary Discography

Posted in classic rock, Hard Rock, Heavy Metal, heavy metal albums, heavy metal news, metal music, metal odyssey, Music, progressive metal, progressive rock, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , , , , , , on August 27, 2011 by Metal Odyssey

Queensrÿche – A brand new greatest hits compilation spanning the legendary discography from Queensrÿche was released on June 14h, 2011, via Capitol Records. This new Queensrÿche compilation is titled 10 Great Songs. I won’t argue that these are truly, “10 Great Songs” from this iconic band! 10 Great Songs is a running series on Capitol Records, where many other bands are having their greatest hits compiled and released as well. This is a cool compilation series that Capitol Records has embarked on, especially if you want those 10 songs that a band is most famously known for.

I stumbled upon this CD while conducting my weekly walk-through of the CD aisle at my local Super Walmart. I already own The Best Of Queensrÿche: Sign Of The Times (Capitol/2007) along with each of their studio albums, therefore did I buy this 10 Great Songs CD? Um, okay, yes I did buy it. You see, once I saw it on the rack, with a $5 (U.S.) price sticker on it, I grabbed it. $5 new! Heck, the cover photo of Queensrÿche on this 10 Great Songs has never been on any other album of theirs… to the best of my Metal knowledge. Throw in that fact that I am very weak at saying “no” to purchasing any CD of a core favorite band of mine and I’m cooked. Just stick a Metal fork in me.

Queensrÿche has 12 studio albums in their storied discography, (with 2007’s Take Cover being a cover song album). When deciding upon which songs best represent the legendary Metal career of Queensrÿche, compilation producer Michael Murphy has nailed it down… and the track listing here is very impressive. (See track listing below). Queen Of The Reich and The Lady Wore Black will always be my sentimental favorites, for these are the two songs that kick-started the career of Queensrÿche, both appearing on their debut S/T EP from 1983.

I’ve seen this Queensrÿche CD selling new for $6.97 (U.S.) on Amazon.com. That’s practically $2 more than what Super Walmart is selling it for… plus you have to pay a shipping cost on Amazon.com too. Yes, Stone is a Metal bargain hunter, even if I do buy CD’s with songs that I already own on them. Metal be thy name.

U.D.O. HAS COMETH BACK IN 2011 AND SET ME METAL STRAIGHT.

Five Metal Songs and Albums You Must Hear – I love Metal. No, I really love Metal. Therefore, I am indulging in a personal Metal duty in alerting you to five Metal songs and albums that are a must to hear during this Summer’s end of 2011. These fired-up Metal songs and kick-ass Metal albums are all released this year! My only two requests to you while listening to these five Metal songs and albums are: play ’em loud and let yourself get psyched-out ’cause METAL LIVES! By the way… I put U.D.O. – Rev Raptor at the top of this post ’cause it is an all-out, scorching blitz of Old School Metal. Hallelujah fellow Metalheads, unite and ring that F’n Metal bell.

SOURVEINFangs from Black Fangs – (Candlelight Records, released June 21, 2011)

Listening to Fangs from Sourvein is like receiving an open-handed Doom Metal slap to my face. Listening to the entire album Black Fangs is a double open-handed Doom Metal slap to my face. I like that. This song set me Metal straight the first time I heard it and it’s heavy as F’n molasses. The thick and massive guitar riffs from King James and the battering vocals of T-Roy are eye-popping and earth splitting. Throw in a rhythm section that seems intent on splitting the universe in half, just for good Metal measure. Fangs is not just a song to hear, it’s a song to experience and Black Fangs is a Metal destination for the Metalhead brain.

PENTAGRAMCall The Man from Last Rites (Metal Blade Records, released April 12, 2011)

Pentagram = Doom Metal. Pentagram is back with their 7th studio album Last Rites and my favorite song on this album is Call The Man. There is a Doom Metal groove happening on this song which has created quite a stir in my Metal saturated brain. Bobby Liebling has that ability to wrap this song around his vocals, making him the man. Listening to Call The Man and this entire album is like getting psyched-out by a late night thunderstorm, there’s just no other way for me to explain it. Metal be thy name.

SINISTER REALMThe Crystal Eye – (Shadow Kingdom Records – 2011)

Allentown Pennsylvania’s Metal warriors have an unbelievable ability to harness their Metal skills to create an album that is more potent with memorable songs than some Metal bands entire discography. The title track hasn’t just kicked my ass, it has kicked my ass with quantum Metal authority. The feel, vibe and Metal totality of this song flexes old school Metal in the vein of DIO and any other Traditional Metal icon you can think of. Yes, this song and album are that grand and Sinister Realm is that great.

FAIR TO MIDLANDMusical Chairs – (eOne Music, released July 12, 2011)

What makes Fair To Midland so damn special to me is their capacity to push the Metal envelope with musical experimentation. Are they Progressive? Alternative? Metal? Extreme? Hard Rock? Try all of the above. At the end of the day, Fair To Midland is an assorted listen into what sensational Heavy Music can sound like when a band decides to throw F’n caution to the F’n wind. After your first listen to Musical Chairs, you might want to breathe a sigh of relief knowing there is a band out there that crushes narrow-mindedness, when it comes to writing and playing the heavy stuff. Arrows & Anchors is a thorough listen into what can be successfully achieved, when a band doesn’t give a crap about what other bands are playing.

U.D.O.REV-RAPTOR – (AFM Records – released May 31, 2011)

Yes, Udo Dirkschneider is a living Metal legend in my Metal world. The Metal shelf life of his band U.D.O. has proven any and all negative critics wrong once again, with album #13 added to a discography that deserves a double horns to the air. The songs on Rev-Raptor are indicators that U.D.O. is still a Metal band to reckon with. My pick on this notable Metal album is Renegade. Fast, furious and delectably heavy is Renegade. This is THE song and THE album you want cranked up and shaking your world and the world outside… while the neighbors are having that stupid, annual, gargantuan picnic that you were not invited to.

METAL BE THY NAME.

LONG LIVE METAL.

MASS “Voices In The Night” – Revisiting A Hard Rockin’ and Feel Good Album From 1989

Posted in classic rock, Hard Rock, Heavy Metal, heavy metal albums, heavy metal news, metal music, metal odyssey, Music, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , , , , , , on August 8, 2011 by Metal Odyssey

MASS – Among the 80’s resurgence of Hard Rock and Heavy Metal bands these last several years, there is one band from that era that cannot be overlooked. This band is from Boston, Massachusetts and their world known as MASS.

This band’s strong and memorable contributions to 80’s Hard Rock and Heavy Metal are forever forged on their 1984 debut & self-titled EP, along with three other albums from that loud, proud and colorful 80’s decade. One such album from MASS that I’ve been listening to (non-stop it seems) since this past Winter is 1989’s Voices In The Night.

Released on Enigma Records and produced by the legendary Michael Sweet, of the also legendary Stryper, Voices In The Night is a triple threat of: Hard Rockin’, feel good and elevated vibes. Yes, I do feel good listening to this album and it only seems to become elevated with each passing song. For those unfamiliar, MASS plays hard and heavy in the vein of Stryper, Steelheart, Slaughter and Nelson. MASS sold their share of records back in the 80’s and even made it on the rotation of a music network that used to be cool, known as MTV.

The vocals of Louis St. August are tailor-made for Arenas on this album… and still are in 2011. Where Vince Neil of Mötley Crüe has a pissed-off flair vocally and Tom Keifer of Cinderella always bestows a bluesy vibe with his voice, Louis St. August displays that assured, energetic and commanding vocal style. Louis gives the songs on Voices In The Night that elevated atmosphere; it’s his tones, range and notes he hits that dictates the highs you can obviously hear and actually feel.

As with every band, the debate will surface as to which album is their finest in their discography. I’m not aiming for Voices In The Night to be declared their best work, what I am pointing out however, is Voices In The Night is an album that should be remembered for its overall late 80’s hard and heavy luster, coupled with its melodic appeal and strength of songs. Metal be thy name, if this album was newly released today, it would be noticed for its old school glow and Classic Rock relevance. Well, in my Metal opinion, of course.

The ballad Chance For Love is realistically one of the finest of its kind, spanning Hard Rock to Hair Metal, from the mid to late 80’s. I’m no ballad freak, still Chance For Love makes me realize that when done with an acute awareness of not going overboard on the sappy meter; a band can achieve excellence with some Rockin’ tenderness. Uh, oh… Stone is in trouble now, I’m revealing my softer side. On songs such as the title track and Nine Tonight, the tempo is high, the rhythm section grooves, while the guitar of Gene D’Itria crunches out melodic licks and head banging’ riffs. In essence, that can easily sum up this entire album. One song that Gene flat-out shreds on is Staying Alive. Metal as my witness, it’s a cool song.

The chorus in these songs are not just harmonious, they are undeniably sing-along. Reach For The Sky is one song that never fails to have me pumping my fist into the air while (trying) to sing along to. Louis makes it sound so easy as he sings Carry Your Heart, he more than likely was born with that confidence factor. Carry Your Heart is an edgier song, with a psyche-you-out guitar solo that beckons me to play some vintage air guitar. Miles Away can be pointed out as an anthem on this album, one that can supercharge the Metal senses into indestructible mode, with its music alone.

Overall, Voices In The Night has an old school echo happening within its wall of sound and I’m not whining about it. The semi-rawness that this album radiates only makes the songs sound more real and fortified with a Hard Rockin’ punch. With a Christian Metal approach to positive reinforcement, I can’t see how this album couldn’t make anyone’s mood better. Then again, not everyone will like what Stone digs. Seasoned MASS fans already know this, yet new recruits to this band should be informed the following: Voices In The Night is an album to be revisited, enjoyed, Rocked out by and recommended to fellow Rockaholics.

* Voices In The Night was reissued by Retrospect Records in 2008, with the bonus track: Stevie.

ANTHRAX – “Worship Music”: Releases on September 13th, 2011!

Posted in Heavy Metal, heavy metal albums, heavy metal news, metal music, metal odyssey, Music, rock music, rock music news, Thrash Metal with tags , , , , , , , , on August 2, 2011 by Metal Odyssey

ANTHRAX – Worship Music, the long-awaited new studio album from Anthrax, one of the four original architects of Speed and Thrash Metal, has been confirmed for a September 13 release date on Megaforce Records. Appropriately,Worship Music will street the day before the band’s triumphant return to their native New York to play at Yankee Stadium as part of The Big Four concert extravaganza.

Not only is Worship Music Anthrax’s first studio release in eight years, but the album marks the return of vocalist Joey Belladonna, whose last studio work with the band was 1990’s Persistence of Time. Joey Belladonna is now firmly back in the Anthrax line up with drummer Charlie Benante, guitarists Scott Ian and Rob Caggiano, and bassist Frank Bello.

The 11-track Worship Music was produced by Anthrax, Rob Caggiano and Jay Ruston and recorded over a four-year period at studios in New York, Los Angeles and Chicago. Belladonna’s return to the band prompted some of the songs originally recorded to be re-crafted with fresh lyrics or tweaked to better suit his overall vibe and energy. Some of the songs were completely replaced with brand-new songs and, of course, all have Belladonna’s inimitable vocal stamp on them.

When Anthrax first started Worship Music, they had no idea if the music would ever see the light of day, but they carried on because making music is what they do, it’s in their blood. According to Ian, “It took everything in us as people to make this record and it shows. We went back to square one and did it for the same reason we did it back then, because we worshipped music and we still do. Music is something worth worshipping.” Anthrax will support Worship Musicwith a massive world tour. Dates will be announced shortly.

With worldwide sales in excess of 10-million, 2011 sees Anthrax celebrating its 30th year as a band. Over those three decades, Anthrax has received multiple Gold and Platinum albums, multiple Grammy nominations, and a host of other accolades from the media, industry and fans.

SINISTER REALM – “The Crystal Eye”: Defends The Metal Faith Valiantly, In Epic And Prevailing Prominence

Posted in classic metal, Heavy Metal, heavy metal albums, heavy metal news, Metal, metal music, metal odyssey, Music, rock music, rock music news, traditional metal with tags , , , , , , , , , on August 1, 2011 by Metal Odyssey

WARNING: THE FOLLOWING ALBUM REVIEW FOR THE CRYSTAL EYE MAY MOTIVATE YOU TO BUY THIS CD… AND MAKE YOU AWARE THAT TRUE AND REAL AMERICAN TRADITIONAL METAL DOES, AFTER ALLTRULY EXIST. YOU’VE BEEN METAL WARNED.

FOR THOSE OF YOU WHO ARE ALREADY SMIRKING… JUST REMEMBER THIS: STONE DOESN’T BULLSHIT WHEN IT COMES TO METAL.

SINISTER REALM – Okay, so I was minding my own Metal business, when one night last week I checked my email inbox to find a message from Sinister Realm. I’m thinking to myself, what Metal message is Sinister Realm sending me? I was of course curious, for this Traditional Metal band from Allentown, Pennsylvania, has made quite a Metal name for themselves on this part of the East Coast. In the email was an invitation to review their newly released studio album: The Crystal Eye (Shadow Kingdom Records). A no brainer… I was more than Metal willing to give this new Sinister Realm album a listen. Then I listened again… and again. Metal be thy name, I could not believe what I was hearing. God almighty above, The Crystal Eye is an unreal Traditional Metal listening experience.

For all Metal intents and purposes, if you are to buy just one more newly released Metal CD this year, The Crystal Eye is as strong a candidate as any other. Whoa, did someone say “why Stone”? The reasons are easy to explain, therefore here is the Metal breakdown, in no particular Metal order:

Reason One: Let’s skip right to the instrumental that is Battle for the Sinister Realm. My God almighty, is this an intense song that embellishes every nuance that is golden about a Traditional Metal instrumental. Listening to the melodic sound that this song radiates, coupled with its old school Metal vibe and feel, I’m mesmerized that this band can capture such welcomed Traditional Metal magic, in 3:29.

Reason Two: Dual Metal guitars. John Kantner and John Risko. These two Metal axe men summon up all the glorious images of excitement, of days long ago, when my young ears experienced Glenn Tipton and K.K. Downing for the first time. Yes, the Metal torch has been handed down… John Kantner and John Risko are two Metal guitarists that are happening NOW in 2011. Hearing is believing…

Reason Three: Alex Kristof on vocals is a convincing and strong presence. Without knowing, I will wager he is a lifetime devotee to the late Ronnie James Dio. Alex is the singer that Traditional Metal bands will search the clubs, internet and world over for… he’s that dynamic with his vocals. On the 8:54 epic, The Tower is Burning, his confidence rains down with each talented syllable he sings. Honestly, there isn’t a moment on The Crystal Eye where I’m not impressed with listening to Alex.

Reason Four: All eight songs embody the essence of how Traditional Metal is supposed to sound like. Powerful, epic and responsible for giving me the damn chills, is how I best describe The Crystal Eye. This album would kick mighty ass in the mid 80’s, only Sinister Realm is kicking mighty ass in the here and now. Metal written and played like this doesn’t grow on some F’n fruit tree, ready to be picked for harvest. The Metal I hear on all of these songs is potent with muscular relevance and cannot be denied by my ears.

Reason Five: Every band needs its rhythmic glue to hold the beats steady and Chris Metzger (drums) and John Shamus Gaffney (bass, background vocals) are titans to hear. With a steel solid production, both Chris and John’s ground quaking effectiveness is substantial and heard with clarity.

Reason Six: The title track: The Crystal Eye. Metal be thy name, this song is the epitome of just how riveting and compelling Traditional Metal can sound and feel like. This song moves me, man. While I’m listening to this song, I feel like I am that “man on the silver mountain” and I can do anything.

Music is subjective and personal to any individual. However, take my Metal advice on Sinister Realm… what you do with it is entirely up to you. The Crystal Eye isn’t a can of Metal whoop ass, instead, it’s a case of Traditional Metal whoop ass. I finish by saying: I listen to my hefty share of Metal and I declare The Crystal Eye as one of the very best Metal albums of 2011. Thanks to Sinister Realm, I’ve been reminded as to why Metal is the law.

The Crystal Eye – Track Listing:

Winds of Vengeance

At the Hands of the Tormentor

With Swords Held High

The Crystal Eye

Signal the Earth

The Shroud of Misery

Battle for the Sinister Realm

The Tower is Burning
