Yesterday, November 23, 2009, was a very good day in the life of this Misfits fan, uh, fiend. You see, as I innocently walked to my mailbox, (which is on the front roadside), I stared up towards the front door to my house… what is that I see? It was a very large bubble mailer, flat and the size of a record album… extremely beautiful looking from afar. My heart began to race as I felt a tad of perspiration come upon my forehead, my legs took me as fast as they would go to this mysterious package. Holding my crap/junk mail in my left hand, I bent down to pick up this glorious bubble mailer with my right hand. The return address read: Cinder Block/FFP… from Rancho Cordova, California… what a wonderful return address indeed. You see, I pre-ordered Misfits Land Of The Dead, (the first pressing and red vinyl version), back on October 15, of this year and it is now in my hands! Yeeaaahhhh baaabbbbbyyyyy!!

The excitement that rippled throughout my body and mind, at this moment of knowing Land Of The Dead was in this bubble mailer I was holding, was a moment I will not forget for a very long time. There are only 1,000 copies of the red vinyl version! Hello, can we all say… rare? Being a Misfits fan/fiend for so long, the sheer exhilaration of finally nailing down one of their rare vinyl singles – is a Horror Punk dream come true for me. With over a month passing by since my initial order, I began to worry, that maybe I was not going to be one of the lucky ones to get a red vinyl copy of Land Of The Dead. Worry no more! Cinder Block is the distribution/mail order company that the Misfits web site uses for selling all things… Misfits. A huge Horror Punk kudos to Cinder Block for landing me a copy and making good on my order! Plus, a bonus Horror Punk kudos to Cinder Block for the protective packaging they used for shipping… my copy of Land Of The Dead is mint/spotless!

The backside of this 12 inch vinyl single has the complete lyrics for both songs: Land Of The Dead and Twilight Of The Dead. A brief write-up regarding the connection between George A. Romero, (the legendary film director for the Living Dead movie series) and Jerry Only, is also on the backside of this 12 inch single. I purchased both of these Misfits songs on itunes as well, needing digital copies is a must. It just feels damned great to order what is known to be a rarity and actually get it! I spent a total of $15.94 on this Misfits gem, (including shipping), this is not shabby when you consider what this same red vinyl version is going for on ebay currently. My best Metal buddy Scott, well, he informed me this red vinyl version is selling in the $60.00 to $75.00 range! (I wasn’t tracking this info myself, due to my waiting nervously for my own copy to arrive in the mail). Let me say this, it was worth every cent to get this Misfits single on vinyl. I am a psyched out dude today and it feels great.

Misfits as they appear on Land Of The Dead:

Jerry Only – bass & vocals

Dez Cadena – rhythm & lead guitars

Robo AKA Julio Roberto Valverde Valencia – drums

The album artwork by Arthur Suydam gets my vote for 2009 Album Cover of the Year, spanning all the Rock Music genres. As a fellow artist, it is hard for me not to stare at this cover with art appreciation.

I BOUGHT MISFITS “LAND OF THE DEAD” AND IT SERVES ME RIGHT!

MISFITS. Jerry Only, Dez Cadena and Robo. Punk Rock royalty. Horror Punk Royalty. Yup, I am a fan, excuse me if you please. I bought the brand spanking new… Land Of The Dead maxi single off of itunes on Halloween. I deliberately waited to buy these two new songs on Halloween too… it is only fitting and it has served me right. The two new Misfits songs are: Land Of The Dead and Twilight Of The Dead, both songs paying tribute to the Geoege A. RomeroLiving Dead movie series. Land Of The Dead clocks in at 2:13 and Twilight Of The Dead clocks in at 2:45. I will take this five minutes of new Misifts Horror Punk and thank my damn lucky dark skies, that this legendary band still Rocks in 2009. Jerry Only has taken his Misfits and Horror Punk into a fourth decade, recruiting new generations of fiends along the way.

Yes, the lyrics are Horror themed… blood runs cold… ’nuff said. Yes, Jerry Only sounds outrageously great on lead vocals and bass. Yes, Dez Cadena delivers the licks as profusely solid as ever. Yes, Robo is on drums and hits the skins with vintage Punk beats. In comparison to past Misfits sound, both new songs follow in the Misfits Punk footsteps of their Project 1950 album. The Horror Punk and Roll of Misfits is alive and well in 2009. I am so gloriously thrilled to have these two new Misfits songs in my personal collection. You too can serve yourself right this Halloween weekend by snagging these two new Misfits songs off of itunes – they are only 99 cents each!!!! Hell, that is way less expensive than a damn large fry, burger and milk shake from a plastic fast food chain! Plus these Misfits songs are not a detriment to your health either! Make your life that much better and GET THESE NEW MISFITS SONGS TODAY! I’m not bashful about any of my recommendations, obviously. Happy Halloween Weekend – fellow Fiends.

RANCID “…And Out Come The Wolves” – Punk Rock To Cure The Rainy Day Blues

RANCID "...And Out Come The Wolves" small album picI am listening to Rancid today, all day. In my house, in my car, it does not matter. Rancid is my band of choice due to the slick and groove saturated Punk Rock style they bestow. They are Street Punk at many turns, yet they are so much from the Old School Punk Rock mold of the Ramones too. Kickin’ and fun, (gasp), did I just use the F word there? In my area today, the weather is miserable – rainy, semi-cold, of course cloudy and dank. What better band for me, than Rancid… to get my energy level back on high and to kick start my day and attitude. I am actually going to settle on one Rancid CD to crank today – …And Out Come The Wolves. The richness and foundation of Rock and Roll 101 is so evident in the Punk Rock of Rancid, especially on this album. My adoration for Rancid grows each and every time I listen to their Punk Rock. Out of the nineteen songs on this album, there is not one to skip over. I apologize to no one for being a rabid Rancid fan. Life is too short, I love the music I listen to – end of Metal story. Uh, not really… Rancid rules.

I have my core Punk Rock Band favorites… getting swallowed up by this addicting genre is an easy thing to do. It is funny, to see me today, driving the family taxi and picking up my daughters from school… you would never know that I am a devout lifetime Metalhead, who is experiencing his Punk Rock fever of Rancid. I’m certain I am not alone… there are too many of us out there who look like the average Johnny or Beatrice… and were cranking up the Metal and/or Punk Rock in the family taxi’s or mini vans. Funny stuff, however, it is the Metal truth.

RANCID "Let The Dominoes Fall" small album picI just can’t explain it though, there are those certain bands that just make you feel like everything is cool and alright. Rancid is just that band for me. Over the weekend, I just hung up the very large Rancid poster that comes inside their new CD – let the dominoes fall. The front of the poster is the front cover group photo on that CD, (pictured to the left of this paragraph). On the back of the poster are all of the songs lyrics – real cool. I put this poster inside a very large, thick plastic sleeve for protection too. It is hanging up in my Rocked out basement. It serves me right. Plus, my daughters dig Rancid like there is no tomorrow and this poster being hung makes the basement that much more homey for us all. Rancid is a Punk Rock Band that you should give a try, especially those who are sitting on the fence about wanting some Punk Music in their life. The social commentary and relevance of Rancid’s lyrics are entertaining as they are legitimate. In my most honest of Metal opinions, I just cannot resist the damn credibility of Rancid. The overall realness of …And Out Come The Wolves and any of the other Rancid albums overflows. I can’t ever jump onto that dreaded word – Pop, and attach it to this band… never. Rancid is not Pop Punk – period.

So, if you are looking for something really cool to do today, take my advice and buy RancidAnd Out Come The Wolves. If you already have it, you know what I am talking about. (Hey, it is not like I am telling you to go out and buy the latest artificial crap from some televised talent show winner). Here is some more solid advice to adhere to from Metal Odyssey – buy any Rancid CD today and know that this is Punk Rock that was Made In America.

RANCID IS:

Tim Armstrong – vocalist, guitarist and all around musician

Lars Frederiksen – guitarist and vocalist

Matt Freeman – bass guitarist

Branden Steineckert – drums

** Brett Reed was the drummer for Rancid on …And Out Come The Wolves

* …And Out Come The Wolves was released on August 22, 1995.

THE CASUALTIES – “we are all we have” is REAL, aggressive, Punk Rock

Posted in Album Review, essential punk rock albums, extreme music, extreme music today, Music, old school punk rock, Punk rock, punk rock album review, punk rock album reviews, punk rock albums, punk rock music, punk rock music 2009, punk rock music today, punk rock songs with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on September 10, 2009 by Metal Odyssey

The Casualties "we are all we have" small picThe Casualties are a smack to the head reminder that Punk Rock is not dead… one listen to we are all we have and I listened again. The Casualties new album, (released August 25, 2009 on SIDEONEDUMMY Records), comes across fast, heavy and embracingly aggressive. Standing amidst what I consider, an enduring crowd of veteran and rising Punk Rock and Hardcore Punk bands that are all current and real, The Casualties approach is take no damn crap or prisoners, in my Metal opinion. The Casualties have never been bashful about making a social statement lyrically, we are all we have gives more than a nod to what is pissing off this band. I cannot resist the Old School backing/gang vocals that makes this album so darned Punk infused. If we are all we have was a book, an appropriate title very well could be Real Punk Rock and The System Sucks. Integrity heard and felt in music is open for interpretation, a personal opinion, if you will… I hear and feel the upmost integrity from The Casualties, always have, there is no saran wrap shrouding this band from their convictions.

The United States has without doubt, gone through a major political change within the past year, along with an unprecedented mortgage crisis, throw in the environmental issues of the day and The Casualties will inevitably get their point across with a new album. One of the greatest freedoms I cherish and hope will never be tinkered with by my government, is freedom of speech. When a band I like has something to say through song, I’ll listen, I always find it damned cool when a band like The Casualties have opinions. Apocalypse Today and War is Business are the two meaty social songs that gets their messages out with true Punk angst and bite. Hey, I have always been concerned about my drinking water too… The Casualties make a damned good and cool point on Apocalypse Today, with vintage Punk driven intensity. War is Business has The Casualties reminding me that yeah… I am thankful the war is not here and it’s over there. Despite the location of war, The Casualties sadly remind me that innocent families and children fall victim to war overseas… war does suck, war is hell. Nevertheless, I am grateful to the service men and women who have protected my country from terror. War has unfortunately followed societies around since the dawn of time. I could not agree more with the lyrics to Life Clone, I can’t stomach plastic/artificial people who buy themselves through life either. I raise my fist in the air to this song and bellow – hell yeah! The Casualties bring forth the social images and opinions that are either too taboo or uncomfortable for some of us to speak up about in a public or open forum.

Putting the social factor aside, we are all we have is as pronounced a Hardcore Punk Rock album as you can hear, vocally, musically and lyrically in sync, producing a bastion of Punk vibe. The album finishes off with Rocker’s Reggae (Working Man’s Dub), it is laced with a Reggae sound, with the messages of Punk pride through Punk songs and these same songs will never be taken from the Punk genre by anyone, for the Punk genre knows the true meaning and feelings of these working man/Punk songs. I am not out to fool anyone, I will never pose… I am not a Punk myself, yet I still will get the maximum Punk enjoyment from The Casualties as I always have. I listen to many Punk Rock bands, I have for decades. I am a Metalhead who has expanded his Extreme Music appreciation a very long time ago… with no regrets.

The Casualties are:

Jorge– vocals
Rick – bass
Meggers– drums
Jake – guitar

RANCID – “let the dominoes fall” is Punk Rock to devour

fullsizeRancid“let the dominoes fall” took me by surprise as I walked the CD aisles at Target today. Why is this? Well, for one, it was actually there, in stock. Secondly, the humane price of  $7.98 was screaming out at me to – buy now! $7.98… that is cheaper than buying two happy meals for my daughters. Talk about value… there are also 19 songs on the new Rancid CD as well. It is a cool treat to finally not get ripped off by the retail CD prices… when I find a great deal, I tell people. The liner notes in this Rancid CD are a bonus – it is a very large Rancid poster (depicting the CD cover of band and logo). This poster is so large, it is suitable for hanging on your wall of choice. (Sorry, I did not take an actual measurement of this poster, take my word for it, it is large). On the backside of the poster you will find all the lyrics to the songs.

As for the songs – excellent stuff, this Rancid Punk Rock is. What I like most about Rancid, is there are no hidden agendas – just Punk Rock comin’ at ya’ the way it should be… with plenty of Old School Punk Rock sound and feel to rejoice over. I always found the Ramones and Misfits to be an instant cure to the doldrums and stagnant complacency, that an ordinary day may bring. Rancid fits this bill for me as well. I need Punk Rock as much as any of my Metal Music genres I revere. To make my point about curing the doldrums… my first listen to the tune “LA river” and I was stoked. “LA river” now and forever will get me moving, this songs beat and lyrics are instantly memorable and very addicting. In my opinion, Rancid does a convincing and yet, modest job at airing out some social commentary… “this place” tackles the subject matter of monster corporations causing the demise of Lake Shore foundries. “civilian ways” is for me, lyrically, a commendable Punk Rock statement. This song touches on the life of a U.S. soldier returning home from war… only this soldier now finds civilian ways to be foreign. Rancid does not overstate themselves while staying true to their music, the lyrics of “i ain’t worried” is a proud rallying cry for the Punk Rock genre.

Overall, “let the dominoes fall” has proven to be an excellent Punk Rock CD for me, Rancid has 19 tunes here for a reason… they’re all credible. Truth be told, I listened to this CD four times today alone… not counting the number of times I listened to “LA river”, which was many times more. I highly recommend Rancid “let the dominoes fall” to all Punk Rock fans and all Extreme Music fans across the globe. Rancid are: Tim Armstrong on guitar & vocals, Lars frederiksen on guitar & vocals, Matt Freeman on bass & vocals and Branden Steineckert on drums. Rancid “let the dominoes fall” was released on June 2, 2009, on Hellcat Records/Epitaph Records.
