IRON CLAW – Guitarist and Founding Member Jimmy Ronnie Comments On Band’s Lead Vocalist Transition

Posted in classic rock, classic rock bands, Hard Rock, Heavy Metal, metal odyssey, Music, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , , , on October 24, 2011 by Metal Odyssey

Today, Jimmy Ronnie (guitarist and founding member of Scotland’s Hard Rock pioneers IRON CLAW) commented to Metal Odyssey on the recent departure of vocalist Gordon Brown. Thank you Jimmy! Here is what Jimmy had to say:

“As far as Gordon’s departure goes I haven’t really got much more to add, beyond that has already been said by Gordon himself. There is no bad feeling between us and we wish him good fortune in his future musical endeavours. Gordon has done a fine job on the album and that remains for all to hear. It’s just that the time had come for us to go in separate directions and when it came down to it we found ourselves in complete agreement on that point”.

“Iron Claw is still very much alive and looking forward to working with the next lead vocalist. There are plans to take the live show to audiences both here in the UK and abroad and Ripple Music have confirmed their desire to release another album in a year or so. Many thanks to Metal Odyssey for your continuing support”.

Monday’s Question Of The Day: Why Is Chicago Not In The Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame?

Posted in classic rock, classic rock bands, Hard Rock, metal odyssey, Music, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , , , on October 24, 2011 by Metal Odyssey

CHICAGO – Yes, on a very frequent basis I do rant, regarding the obvious omissions of legendary bands/musicians that the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame are embarrassingly guilty of not inducting for membership. Believe me, this is not the first time nor the last, that I am ranting about the ignorance and politics of The Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame.

The 500 “Rock Scholars” and/or whatever else they’re called, over there in Cleveland, Ohio,  should all put their heads down in shame about ignoring this legendary American Rock Band: Chicago. Read the musical achievements below about Chicago and maybe you too will agree… Chicago is a Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame Band!

The following facts about Chicago are taken from this source: Classic Rock Presents AOR Magazine, Issue 3, July 2011

* Record Sales Of 100 Million

* 21 U.S. Top Ten Singles

* Five Consecutive Chart-Topping Albums

* 11 Number One Singles

* 25 Of 32 Albums Are Certified Platinum

WITHIN TEMPTATION – To Play Unplugged Show For Pinktober Charity

As reported on ROADRUNNER Records.com:

Within Temptation will be performing an unplugged set at the Hard Rock Café in Cologne, Germany on November 17, in support of the “Pinktober” charity campaign to raise funds for the fight against breast cancer.

The performance will take place at 4 PM local time, and will be followed by a signing session. Tickets for this event cost 10 Euros, and will be sold exclusively at Hard Rock Café’s Rock Shop in Cologne.

The first 20 visitors who present a ticket for Within Temptation‘s E-Werk concerts in Cologne on November 16 and November 17 will be granted free admission to the performance at Hard Rock Café.

Singer Sharon den Adel said, “Breast cancer remains one of the most common life-threatening cancers affecting women: One out of eight women will get breast cancer in her life. Every 13 minutes a woman dies of breast cancer. It is therefore very important to keep a high awareness level of the subject in the general public. I am very happy to make a small contribution with my band to a regular event such as Hard Rock Café’s Pinktober campaign.”

Gordon Brown – Former IRON CLAW Vocalist Reflects On His Tenure For “A Different Game” Album, Discusses Departing The Band

Gordon Brown

(Photo Used By Permission From Gordon Brown)

Gordon Brown – Recently, Gordon Brown has decided to step down as lead vocalist for Scotland’s Iron Claw. With nearly forty years since the last studio album was released by Iron Claw, Ripple Music signed them and A Different Game was released back in early October of 2011. Without anything to lose and a bounty of respect to gain, Iron Claw surely did claw their way into my Metal soul and tore it apart for the better. An amazing Hard Rock album with old school heaviness that featured the bluesy vocals of Gordon Brown and the seasoned musicianship of Jimmy Ronnie (guitar), Alex Wilson (bass) and Ian McDougall (drums).

Many (tried and true) legendary bands have changed lead vocalists over the decades of Rock, with Black Sabbath, Iron MaidenRainbow and Deep Purple being so prominently successful at it. Gordon Brown was not the first singer for Iron Claw, nor shall he be the last. The one thing I’m certain about is, I’ll miss the heck out of Gordon’s voice fronting this legendary underground band. Iron Claw will move forward and so too will Gordon Brown. I respect this band and Gordon beyond words can express for they’re a Hollywood script, proving that Rock and Roll dreams do come true.  – Stone

This week, I asked Gordon Brown to share his thoughts regarding his recent departure from Iron Claw and what he is setting his sights on for the future. Here is what Gordon Brown had to say:

My reasons for leaving the band were really quite simple, it wasn’t working for me and hadn’t been for quite a while. My decision to leave was probably made not long after we finished recording, I thought things might improve over time (and) they didn’t!  The thing is, if it isn’t right, it isn’t right and the best course of action is to walk away. There’s no acrimony (to my knowledge), (I) think the others probably felt the same way too in varying degrees.

The making of the album was fun for me, I thought that at age 51 it would never happen, I’m glad it did and I think we made a really good album. Much is often said about vocalists and guitarists, in Iron Claw the less well sung heroes are of course the drums and bass, I’ve said it before and will again now, with Ian McDougal and Alex Wilson you have a rhythm section that sounds like a panzer division on manoeuvres! They allowed Jimmy (Ronnie) and I to strut our stuff out front.

The reviews for the album are in the main very good and positive, hopefully people will get out and buy it.  There was probably a section of listeners and reviewers who expected the Iron Claw of long ago to be brought out to play, it saddens me that they don’t enjoy this version of the band. One particular blog site didn’t think they’d had enough of a go in their review and decided to have a second go and that did kind of amuse me!  There may have been expectations that regurgitating the early 70’s thing was how it would be, my personal view is that this album represents an older band doing what they love… and doing it well. Time will tell with the album. I love it.

There’s no real sadness or regret on my part in leaving. It would have been nice in some ways to have toured the album, but if it isn’t meant to be… I do hope the band find someone reasonably soon. It will however be a bit strange listening to my lyrics being sung by someone else but hey, that’s Rock ‘n’ Roll!

What now for me, well, the future is looking bright. I’ve had a load of requests to collaborate on projects from the UK and USA, so I’ll be investigating that. Being involved in an album from the beginning and having a hand in creating the music as well as writing the lyrics is very attractive to me right now. The likelihood is that it’ll be a mixture of Blues and Southern Boogie with a hint of Bluegrass thrown in. Going back to the music I love best will hopefully allow me to create something that I’d want to release. At the end of the day though, if A Different Game ends up being my only ever released work I won’t be unhappy or unfulfilled.

Cheers, GB

LONG LIVE GORDON BROWN.

THRESHOLD – Studio Update On Forthcoming Ninth Studio Album!

British Progressive Metallers THRESHOLD have just completed pre-production and are currently at Thin Ice Studios (DRAGONFORCE, PENDRAGON) in Surrey, England recording drum tracks for their ninth studio album.

“We’ve got about 75 minutes of music at the moment so there’s plenty to do,” states keyboard player Richard West, who is producing the album alongside guitarist Karl Groom, who adds: “I’m very pleased with the way this album is coming together. It is particularly good to see contributions in writing from more band members.”

The voice of original THRESHOLD vocalist Damian Wilson (HEADSPACE, STAR ONE) will be heard once again. He rejoined the band in 2007 following the departure of Andrew ‘Mac’ McDermott who sadly passed away on the 3rd of August 2011.

THRESHOLD’s previous studio record Dead Reckoning was released in 2007 and featured guest vocals by Dan Swanö (NIGHTINGALE, BLOODBATH). The album entered the U.K. rock charts at #37, the German album chart at #64, and #95 in The Netherlands.

Expect the new THRESHOLD album in 2012.

BRAND NEW SIN – Announce CD Listening Party For: United State

Posted in Hard Rock, Heavy Metal, heavy metal news, metal music, metal odyssey, Music, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , , , , on October 13, 2011 by Metal Odyssey

Brand New Sin are hosting a listening party for their upcoming new album United State. Set for Friday, October 14th at 7:00 PM, the party will take place at SubCat Music Studios in Syracuse, NY. Those interested in attending should register at BrandNewSinInfo@gmail.com. Come out for food, booze and Brand New Sin! United State will be out on October 25th via Goomba Music.

Brand New Sin has risen to new levels with their latest recording and is ready to unleash the disenfranchised roar of United State; out 10/25/11 on Goomba Music.

The enduring trio of Kris Wiechmann (Vocals/Guitar), Chuck Kahl (Bass), and Kevin Dean (Drums) are joined by the new blood of Tommy Matkowski on lead guitar. Tommy’s playing is truly the finishing piece to this already powerful puzzle, lending a fresh and deeply rooted hard rock style to the Brand New Sin sound. This line-up spent much of 2010 on the road together defining the terms of United State, including opening shows for Slash & Myles Kennedy.

United State expands on their 2009 independent release, Distilled, delivering some of the most accomplished and self-defining tracks of the band’s career. It’s clear that the lyrics of these autobiographical songs resonate in the state of mind of so many today. United State is a time capsule of the struggle to survive and overcome in our current society. Many of the songs are about self-reflection. Wiechmann taps into the psyche of the masses: the moments that define each of us. “Infamous” and “Elbow Grease” animate the thoughts of a listener pondering their own past. The rage of songs like “Goddess Of War” and “Bed Of Nails” call out those that try to take advantage of the plight of others, while the anthemic “All My Wheels” tells a story of the struggle to live life never looking back, never regretting, uncompromised.

United State sees a determined and confident Brand New Sin voicing the rage of the world, through fiercely developed statements in lyrics, riffs, and powerfully crafted guitar solos, backed by a driving rhythm section that continues to define strength.

Blue collar, beer drinking, Rock N’ F’n Roll!

WOLFPAKK – S/T Debut Album Of Epic, Melodic, Hard & Heavy Songs In Stores Now! Some Positive Metal Thoughts…

Posted in Hard Rock, Heavy Metal, heavy metal news, melodic metal, metal music, metal odyssey, Music, Power Metal, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , , , , , on October 13, 2011 by Metal Odyssey

The self-titled debut from WOLFPAKK is out now in North America. The brainchild of musicians Michael Voss (ex-Casanova, Mad Max) and Mark Sweeney (ex-Crystal Ball), the goal of WOLFPAKK was not only to feature their respective characteristics and strengths, but also to be joined by guest musicians on the album from all over the Hard Rock and Traditional Metal scenes. Within a very short time over thirty musicians from all over the world had contacted the ambitious Sweeney and Voss to take part in the project, and an album was constructed.

Simply dubbed Wolfpakk, all ten songs were written by Voss and Sweeney, who also shared in the vocal duties, in addition to handling all production and mixing. Joining Michael Voss and Mark Sweeney on this release was an international cast including Paul Di’Anno (ex-Iron Maiden), Tony Martin (ex-Black Sabbath), Jeff Scott Soto (ex-Yngwie Malmsteen, Talisman), Tim “Ripper” Owens (ex-Judas Priest), Paul Shortino (ex-Quiet Riot), Tony Franklin (ex-Blue Murder, Robert Plant), Mat Sinner (Primal Fear), Neil Murray (Whitesnake), Igor Gianola (U.D.O.) and Marco Wriedt (Axxis). View full list of guest musicians at this location.

(Source: Earsplit PR)

* WOLFPAKK was released in North America on October 11th, 2011, on AFM Records.

Stone Says: Really, what can I say in regards to this astounding “all-star cast” of guest musicians that contributed to WOLFPAKK? Amazing. A hundred Metal bravos to Michael Voss and Mark Sweeney! This album soars in its epic appeal, quality melodic songs, Power Metal feel and Hard Rock meets Traditional Heavy Metal sound. My best Metal advice is to buy this album, play it LOUD and enjoy a collaboration of incredibly talented musicians that make WOLFPAKK glisten with Hard Rockin’ and Metal thunderin’ pride.

WOLFPAKK has taken me by surprise and I like Heavy Music surprises that are this grand. Amazing again. I only hope and pray, that this is not the one and only album that I get all stirred up from by WOLFPAKK… please sirs, may Stone have more? Metal be thy name.

SINNER – One Bullet Left: Releases In North America On November 8th, 2011 On AFM Records

Posted in Hard Rock, Heavy Metal, heavy metal news, metal music, metal odyssey, Music, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , , , , , on October 12, 2011 by Metal Odyssey

Hard Rock kings SINNER, who have been engaging the scene with their blistering tunes since the mid-’80s, are back with a brand new album (AFM Records) and are preparing to unleash One Bullet Left onto North American fans this November 8th. The usual cycle of long gap between SINNER albums is over, as One Bullet Left sees release only three years after their persuasive Crash & Burn album. Coming back hard on this album with a renewed lineup, of course you can expect the SINNER-typical guitar harmonies and a high-quality base of Traditional Heavy Metal and honest, handmade Rock, celebrated in a fresh and gutsy way.

Band leader, bassist/vocalist Mat Sinner (Primal Fear, Voodoo Circle, etc.) has rounded-out the new SINNER lineup with drummer Andre Hilgers (Rage), returning guitarist Alex Beyrodt (Primal Fear, Voodoo Circle, etc.), and two additional guitarists Christof Leim (The New Black) and Alex Scholpp (Tarja, Farmer Boys)… yes, three guitarists this time. Recorded and produced in several studios in Europe by Mat Sinner, mixed and mastered then by Achim Köhler, some might say SINNER are at their very best on One Bullet Left.

One Bullet Left Track Listing:

01. The One You Left Behind

02. Back On Trail

03. Give & Take

04. One Bullet Left

05. 10 2 Death

06. Haunted

KORN The Path Of Totality – New Experimental Studio Album Releases on December 6th, 2011

Posted in experimental rock, Hard Rock, Heavy Metal, heavy metal news, metal music, metal odyssey, nu metal, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , , , , on October 12, 2011 by Metal Odyssey

As reported on the official website of KORN, September 28th, 2011:

Korn announced today that they will release their tenth studio album, The Path of Totality on December 6. But this is unlike any Korn record. It’s even unlike any record released before.

The Path of Totality is an experimental album which finds Korn shifting gears and exploring new territory. That should hardly come as a shock to the band’s diehard fans, as Korn exploded onto the scene in the’90s and established themselves as hard rock game changers from that point on.

For The Path of Totality, the band collaborated with some of the leading dubstep and electronic producers in the world, including Skrillex, Excision, Datsik, Noisia, Kill the Noise, and 12th Planet. The result is something completely new, yet utterly and definitively Korn. Leave it to a band like Korn to continue to reinvent itself two decades deep into its career.

“The title The Path of Totality refers to the fact that in order to see the sun in a full solar eclipse, you must be in the exact right place in the exact right time,” Korn frontman Jonathan Davis explained. “That’s how this album came together. I think all the producers feel the same way. I’m not sure it could ever happen again.”

The band’s recent (and much lauded) collaboration with dubstep’s hottest producer, Skrillex, titled “Get Up!,” was the surprise rock hit of the summer, the buzz of which started in Coachella’s dance tent in April 2011, when Jonathan and Munky joined Skrillex on stage for a show stealing unannounced performance of the song.

That performance generated the start of a deafening buzz. The track has sold over 150,000 downloads, while the lyric video has generated nearly two million views and counting. The song was a top 10 rock radio hit.

For more on this article, click here: KORN – Official Website

The first leg of KORN’s “Path of Totality (P.O.T.)” tour will play key ballrooms and feature dubstep DJ’s Datsik and Downlink, as well as young upstart Dutch Dub-rockers Dope D.O.D.

LONG LIVE KORN.

Kimball Jamison – Can’t Wait For Love (Official Music Video): A Melodic Rock Gem Of A Song

Posted in album oriented rock, classic rock, Hard Rock, melodic rock, metal odyssey, Music, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , , , , , , on October 8, 2011 by Metal Odyssey

KIMBALL JAMISON – Alright, it’s time to get those psyche-out ostrich bumps to rise up on your arms and face from an amazing song that boasts two legendary Rock vocalists: Bobby Kimball and Jimi Jamison. Trust me, I am still trying to shake the psyche-out fever I’ve contracted from Can’t Wait For Love. The dual vocal harmonies from Bobby and Jimi, on this song, are instantly identifiable and surely ever memorable.

Can’t Wait For Love Rocks in an elevated style, while showcasing the magical vocal fires that Kimball Jamison are combined. This is an AOR and Classic Rock gem of a melodic song, one that only Bobby Kimball and Jimi Jamison’s vocals could bring to such a heightened level of inspiration. Bobby Kimball is most famously known for his vocals and musical contributions with Toto. Jimi Jamison’s career is highlighted with his successful years he spent as a lead vocalist and songwriter with Survivor.

Check out Can’t Wait For Love below and crank it up! I hope you enjoy this song  as much as I do.

Benedictum was recently selected as the pick of the week on VH1 Classics “That Metal Show. “Dominion” is an exciting musical episode building upon their great foundation by adding  Grammy Award winning producer Ryan Greene (Megadeth, F5, NOFX) and are firing on all cylinders. From the onslaught of the opening track Dominion to the epic Epsilon and the heartfelt acoustic track Sanctuary, this album has it all.  Adding to the already explosive sound of “Dominion” are guest appearances by Jeff Pilson (Dokken, Dio, Foreigner), Craig Goldy (Rough Cutt, Dio, Giuffria) and Rudy Sarzo (Ozzy Osbourne, Quite Riot, Whitesnake).

DesDemon “Through the Gates” transcends you through dark majestic symphonic metal passages with supreme musicianship.  “Through the Gates” has an impressive list of guests musicians from Tim “Ripper” Owens (ex-Judas Priest, ex- Iced Earth, Yngwie Malmsteen, Beyond Fear, Charred Walls of the Damned, Hell Yeah!), Amanda Somerville (Trillium, Avantasia, Somerville / Kiske, HDK, Epica), Sander Gommans (Trillium, After Forever, HDK) & Joe Stump (Holyhell, world-renowned guitar virtuoso).

DesDemon and Benedictum individually have shared the stage with the likes of many international artists like Doro, Primal Fear, Tyr, Korpiklaani, Rotting Christ, Epicurean, Mantic Ritual, Paul DiAnno, Icarus Witch, and have graced the stage of several festivals throughout Europe.

KING KOBRA – Turn Up The Good Times: Official Music Video and Words To Live By

KING KOBRA – We unfortunately live in a world that could use a ton more peace, love and Rock ‘N Roll. You don’t need to be a Deadhead and follow psychedelic bands to understand that. Being a Metalhead, I can relate quite well to peace, love and Rock ‘N Roll and why wouldn’t I? There already is enough hate, envy and mean people around us all, so why shouldn’t I spread the Hard Rockin’ and positive vibes of the legendary KING KOBRA today, with their music video: Turn Up The Good Times.

The self-titled comeback album (and fifth studio album overall) from KING KOBRA, has reminded me once again that there still are Hard Rock bands that want to write and record a feel-good album. KING KOBRA is led by founding member and ultra legendary drummer: Carmine Appice. Rounding out KING KOBRA is: Paul Shortino (vocals), David Michael-Philips (guitar), Mick Sweda (guitar) and Johnny Rod (bass).

* KING KOBRA was released on April 15th, 2011 in Europe and May 5th, 2011 in North America on Frontiers Records.

TURN UP THE VOLUME ON KING KOBRA’S TURN UP THE GOOD TIMES BELOW!
