BRIAN MAY – On July 19th, 1947, Brian May was born. Brian May turns 64 years young today! Happy Birthday Brian May! Being the legendary guitarist and songwriter for the also legendary Queen, it is difficult to not have Brian’s name mentioned in any discussion about all-time greatest guitarists. His signature guitar sound is so recognizable and downright classic.

While I was growing up as a young lad, I can recall hearing Queen on the radio. I remember thinking to myself, that Queen’s songs moved me in such a psyched-out way. Realistically, all those same Queen songs I heard so long ago, when I didn’t even own a legitimate stereo, still psyche me out today. Timeless Rock written and played by timeless musicians, such as Brian May… never fades away.

HAPPY METAL BIRTHDAY SCOTT COVERDALE! – Metal Odyssey would like to wish contributing writer and Metal Researcher, Scott Coverdale, a Happy Metal Birthday! Yes, Scott turns (?) old today, March 24th, 2011. Let’s just say that Scott is “old enough” to “somehow” remember going to the 1988 Monsters Of Rock Festival in Foxsborough, Massachusetts and NOT “old enough” to remember watching the Beatles make their historical debut on the Ed Sullivan Show.

I would like to thank Scott Coverdale for his contributions, fact finding research and digging through CD’s for Metal Odyssey. Remember, my best Metal Buddy Scott… it’s all done in the name of METAL!

I chose the 1988 album cover of AC/DC – Blow Up Your Video (top of post) due to the Metal memories it provides me. You see, this 1988 AC/DC concert is single handedly, the most obnoxiously funny time I’ve ever had with Scott Coverdale at any we went to together. AC/DC Rocked the hell out of the Hartford Civic Center that night too! 1988 was a very cool Metal year indeed. Heatseeker! Uh… Metal be thy name.

LONG LIVE SCOTT COVERDALE.

Eddie Van Halen – Happy Metal Birthday From Metal Odyssey!

Posted in celebrity birthdays, classic rock, Hard Rock, Heavy Metal, metal odyssey, Music, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , , , , , , on January 26, 2011 by Metal Odyssey

EDDIE VAN HALEN – Back on January 26, 1955, one of the greatest guitar players that has ever roamed the Rock and Heavy Music landscape was born. This icon of Rock is also a multi-instrumentalist, songwriter and producer as well. Incredibly documented and noted for his superior guitar wizardry, that in turn has made him become a most influential musician spanning Rock ‘N’ Roll generations is – Eddie Van Halen. Happy Metal Birthday Eddie! The legendary founding member and lead guitarist for Van Halen turns a young 56 today! Whoa… YEAH!

(VAN HALEN I – 1978/Warner Bros. Records)

Van Halen I and Van Halen II are both albums that made my eyeballs widen and my jaw drop to the ground when I was just a young lad. All I can remember was thinking to myself… what is this? This music, this Heavy sound, THAT guitar! I would confidently venture to guess, that I’m not alone in that Rock ‘N’ Roll memory. This was 1978 and 1979 when these first two Van Halen albums were released respectively. Van Halen’s wide-open Hard Rock meets Heavy Metal sound and vibe created some excitement, that was and still is damn amazing to my ears to this very day!

CRANK UP SOME VAN HALEN TODAY AND YELL F’N YEAH!

Guess what? Guess who else shares their birthday with Eddie Van Halen on this 26th day of January? Need some hints? He’s a Metalhead lifer. The dude writing this. Stone. That’s me! YEAH! Happy Metal Birthday to me! I turn a very young 18 today! Um, alright… maybe I’m not 18 after all. Just add “27” to “18” and you win the Metal prize… which is the answer to my real age! The older I get, the more Rock ‘N’ Roll I need… and Metal is my all natural elixir.

(VAN HALEN II – 1979/Warner Bros. Records)

Marty Friedman – Happy Birthday From Metal Odyssey!

Posted in guitar legends, guitarists, Hard Rock, Heavy Metal, metal music, metal odyssey, Music, rock music, rock music news, speed metal, Thrash Metal with tags , , , , , , , , , , , on December 8, 2010 by Metal Odyssey

MARTY FRIEDMAN – World renowned & legendary guitarist Marty Friedman turns 48 years old today, December 8, 2010. Happy Metal Birthday Marty! Marty Friedman solidified his elite guitar status during his days as a Metal axe slinger for the ultra-legendary Megadeth, appearing on five of their albums. Marty played guitar alongside Dave Mustaine, on such seminal Megadeth albums as: Rust In Peace, Countdown To Extinction, Youthanasia, Cryptic Writings and Risk.

Marty was already the established and well revered guitarist among the Heavy Metal universe before that historic gig. Teaming up with guitar great Jason Becker to form Cacophony, releasing Speed Metal Symphony in 1987, on Shrapnel Records. Speed Metal and the art of shredding was highlighted by the neo-classical Metal techniques and skill that Marty and Jason bestowed with their Cacophony team-up. Go Off! was the second and final studio album from Cacophony, released in 1988, (Shrapnel).

That is Marty on the left, Jason on the right, (above album cover). This was a very cool album then and it still is now. Metal Odyssey highly recommends both Cacophony albums… don’t pay attention to any old and stale mainstream album reviews on ’em, those mainstream Rock critics don’t know what they’re listening to anyways.

* Marty Friedman founded the Heavy Metal band Hawaii, back in 1982. From 1983 to 1985, Hawaii released three full-length studio albums. Hawaii could best be described as Speed meets Power Metal.

* Marty Friedman has also released 12 solo albums, (studio & live combined), from 1988 to 2010 and has always been known for his instructional videos/DVD’s on guitar playing and techniques as well.

* Above is a really cool Japanese promo poster/ad for Marty Friedman’s 1996 solo album – True Obsessions, released on Shrapnel Records.

SAMMY HAGAR – HAPPY BIRTHDAY FROM METAL ODYSSEY!

SAMMY HAGAR – On October 13, 1947, Sammy Hagar, the “Red Rocker” was born. Sixty Three years later, Sammy Hagar stands tall as one of the greatest in all of Rock. I, along with Scott Coverdale and the entire Metal Odyssey family, wants to wish Sammy a LOUD and fun filled HAPPY BIRTHDAY! My wife especially, well, she wanted to make certain to wish the Red Rocker a happy birthday today… she really digs him and rightfully so.

If Stone could buy a beer today for Sammy… I’d buy ’em by the rounds! A lead vocalist, guitarist and songwriter, Sammy has a vocal presence that is undeniably infectious and resonates nuthin’ but Rock ‘N’ Roll at 100% proof. There is something about listening to Sammy Hagar’s vocals that makes me and countless others feel like everything is alright… it’s all about good times.

Scott Coverdale and I can never get enough of The Red Rocker… he is as cool in 2010 as ever. Chickenfoot, ’nuff said. To keep the relevance fires burning in Rock Music like Sammy continues to do, only reflects on just how legitimate and honest he is as an all-around musician. Thanks for all of the fabulously memorable music you have created over the years Sammy!! Don’t ever stop ROCKIN!

Here is a roll call of the bands that Sammy has been a major part of, over his illustriously Rockin’ career:

MONTROSE (1973-1975)

That’s Sammy pictured in the far right corner of this album photo. This is the Montrose self-titled debut album from 1973. A classic band is Montrose, we’re talkin’ about Hard Rock & Heavy Metal roots here.

SAMMY HAGAR (Solo)

Sammy has released 11 solo studio albums over his legendary career. Street Machine was the fourth solo album from Sammy, released in 1979 on Capitol Records.

My favorite Sammy Hagar solo album is – Standing Hampton. This album was my very first Sammy Hagar album. Standing Hampton was released in 1981 on Geffen Records. I remember buying it at Bradlees department store in the early ’80’s. I worked in a grocery store in the same plaza as Bradlees… this album probably cost half of my paycheck back then, only it was well worth every penny. Baby’s On Fire is probably my favorite Sammy Hagar song ever. There’s Only One Way To Rock is a song that kicks ass from sunrise to sunset. Plus, Heavy Metal is a downright heavy hitter of a song too. Even if you own a Sammy Hagar “Greatest Hits” CD… buy Standing Hampton… you’ll thank Stone later.

HSAS – Hagar Schon Aaronson Shrieve – Released back in 1984, HSAS was a cool supergroup led by Sammy Hagar on lead vocals. Neal Schon (Journey) on guitar, Kenny Aaronson (Dust) on bass and Michael Shrieve (Santana) on drums. This Through The Fire album from HSAS kicks ass, it’s a great Hard Rock album that deserves more attention than it gets. No, this HSAS album is NOT dated… it has that deeply rooted sound that some of today’s Hard Rock Bands can’t capture.

VAN HALEN – Or, if you prefer, Van Hagar. Just an unbelievably smooth transition Sammy Hagar made in becoming the lead vocalist for Van Halen back in 1986… whoa. The debut album showcasing Sammy with Van Halen was 1986’s 5150 and that album will always be an incredible listen for me. If I had to choose a favorite Van Halen album with Sammy on lead pipes… it’s OU812 from 1988. Cabo Wabo, Feels So Good and Black And Blue are three songs that psyche-me-out beyond Metal belief. Metal be thy name.

SAMMY HAGAR and THE WABORITAS / WABOS – Just good times, feel good, party Rock ‘N’ Roll is Sammy’s Wabos band. If you have never checked out any of their albums, your missing out. This band Sammy assembled can Rock, Rock Hard or simply play it ultra-cool at times. My favorite Wabos album is Livin’ It Up from 2006.

CHICKENFOOT – Sammy’s second venture into forming a “supergroup” has succeeded in my Metal opinion. Chickenfoot ROCKS. ‘Nuff said. The detractors of Chickenfoot are just plain jealous, they have what is diagnosed as: Chickenfoot envy. Released in the Summer of 2009, the self-titled, debut album from Chickenfoot has all that Hard Rockin’ Summertime vibe I crave. With Joe Satriani on guitar, Chad Smith (Red Hot Chili Peppers) on drums and former Van Halen bassist Michael Anthony… yup, it’s a super-duper group.

LONG LIVE SAMMY HAGAR!

Jerry Lee Lewis – Happy Birthday From Metal Odyssey!

Posted in celebrity birthdays, metal odyssey, Music, rock & roll, rock 'n' roll, rock and roll, rock and roll news, rock music, rock music history, rock music news with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on September 30, 2010 by Metal Odyssey

JERRY LEE LEWIS – Metal Odyssey wants to extend a LOUD and ROCKIN’… Happy Birthday to Jerry Lee Lewis! On September 29, 1935, this living Rock ‘N’ Roll Legend was born. At age 75, Jerry Lee Lewis is still Rockin’ the house down wherever he plays! It is real Rock ‘N’ Roll Legends like Jerry Lee Lewis who wrote the book on Rockin’ stage presence. Be it Rock ‘N’ Roll, Country or the genre he helped to shape into form, Rockabilly, Jerry Lee Lewis is without question… a timeless singer, songwriter and performer. A pioneer of Rock ‘N’ Roll is he.

When I was just a young lad, I can remember watching the live concert footage of Jerry Lee Lewis on numerous Rock ‘N’ Roll documentaries. My Dad would tell me: “son, Jerry Lee Lewis use to cause quite the ruckus wherever he played back in the ’50’s!” My Dad actually did get to see Jerry Lee Lewis perform live at a theater in Hartford, Connecticut… back in those Rockin’ late ’50’s. He told me time and again, as I grew up, that Jerry Lee Lewis “live” was incredible stuff. From the stories told to me from my Dad, other unreal legends of Rock ‘N’ Roll played at the local Hartford area theaters as well… Fats Domino, Chuck BerryLittle Richard, The Everly Brothers and so on.

There are those moments, where I wish I could go back in time, just like Michael J. Fox did in those fun Back To The Future movies. Just to see the likes of Jerry Lee Lewis performing live, in the decade of those fabulous ’50’s, would be a Rockin’ time traveling experience for certain. Aw, heck, I would want to see all the legends of Rock ‘N’ Roll playing live back then… making for a very long stay, on a trip back through time. I guess those good ‘ol news reels and live concert footage from the ’50’s, that make up so many Rock ‘N’ Roll documentaries, will have to do for now.

* Jerry Lee Lewis was inducted into The Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame in 1986.

* Jerry Lee Lewis has a brand new studio album out, it’s titled: Mean Old Man and was released on September 7, 2010, on Verve Forecast/Shangri La. There are some very cool and legendary guest musicians on this album with Jerry Lee Lewis too. Here are just “some” of the great names: Ringo Starr, Kid Rock, Slash, Tim McGraw, Ronnie Wood, John Fogerty, Willie Nelson, Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Sheryl Crow and… Eric Clapton! This is an abbreviated list too! I feel it’s pretty fine when some of the biggest names in Rock and Country Music can rally around Jerry Lee Lewis like that for his new album. A Metal kudos to all of ’em!

* There are 10 songs on the standard issued CD of Mean Old Man, with 18 songs on the deluxe edition.

* My personal favorite Jerry Lee Lewis song is Great Balls Of Fire. Sure, it may seem like an obvious choice, only it is my favorite from him. This song was covered by an all-time favorite band of mine… the MISFITS. Great Balls Of Fire can be heard on their 2003 studio album – Project 1950. This is an album of ten cover songs… all legendary hits from the fabulous ’50’s. The Misfits Jerry Only sings Great Balls Of Fire the only way that he can… and it’s fiendishly great. I highly recommend Project 1950 to any fan of Rock ‘N’ Roll… any.

I think the album cover for Project 1950 is very cool.

LONG LIVE JERRY LEE LEWIS!

LONG LIVE THE MISFITS!

AW, HECK…  AS THE LATE AND ULTRA GREAT RONNIE JAMES DIO ONCE SANG… LONG LIVE ROCK ‘N’ ROLL!!

GLENN HUGHES – “The Voice of Rock”. Metal Odyssey extends a loud Happy Birthday to vocal and music legend Glenn Hughes! On August 21, 1952, Glenn Hughes was born. Glenn turns a Rockin’ 58 years old today! Glenn Hughes has been the lead vocalist for both Deep Purple and Black Sabbath during his unreal legendary music career. Those are two bands that paved the road for Hard Rock and Heavy Metal as we all know, listen to and love it today.

In 2010, Glenn is Rockin’ better than ever with his new band – Black Country Communion, which also features Jason Bonham on drums. Glenn Hughes can easily be considered as one of the all-time greatest singers in Rock history… in my Metal opinion, Metal be thy name.

The genres of music that Glenn Hughes has performed, as both a vocalist and musician, coupled with being a songwriter and producer, are many… Rock, Hard Rock, Heavy Metal, Blues, Funk and Soul to name quite a few. To say Glenn Hughes is a diverse vocalist and musician is an understatement. Glenn Hughes belongs in The Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame, his contributions and talent stand alone, as he has stood the test of time.

Matt Sorum is the drummer for Velvet Revolver and former drummer for Guns N’ Roses and The Cult. (These are the most famous bands that Matt Sorum has been drummer for). A Heavy Metal milestone for Matt Sorum happened this Fall of 2009, where he filled in as the drummer for the ultra legendary Motorhead. (Mikkey Dee of Motorhead took a leave of absence to be on a reality television show, some sort of survivor type show).

Man, if there ever was a sharp dressed man, Matt Sorum has the knack for looking sharp. ZZ Top must have wrote Sharp Dressed Man with Matt Sorum in mind. Matt Sorum has his own clothing line too, if I had the extra loot I would be buying his stuff and strutting the look. Oh well, I guess the $12 jeans from Walmart will suffice me for now. Matt Sorum teamed up with renowned fashion designer Max Noce and launched the Sorum Noce Clothing Line this past March of 2009.

As for Matt Sorum on drums, what can I say? This guy is real good. C’mon, the three bands he has been drummer for are no slouches within the world of Heavy Metal. To have been the drummer for those three bands of their status, man, that basically says it all. Plus, once Velvet Revolver makes a return, (with a new lead singer of course), Matt Sorum will be manning the skins and continuing his Hard Rock/Heavy Metal legacy. As I read a quote from Lemmy Kilmister, (vocalist & bass guitarist of Motorhead), recently, he referred to Matt Sorum as a professional. ‘Nuff said.

9086446Motley Crue’s incredibly talented, lead guitarist, Mick Mars has turned the cool age of 53 on Friday, April 3, 2009. Happy Heavy Metal birthday Mick Mars! It is so obvious to me, what Mick Mars has contributed to Motley Crue since 1981, as both musician and song writer. In my opinion, Mick Mars with his guitar playing, has lended extreme credibility to Motley Crue since day one. I had the Metal opportunity to see Motley Crue live in 1987, on the “Girl’s, Girl’s, Girl’s Tour”, Mick Mars was sensational on stage. His mere presence alone made me feel like I was witnessing one of the biggest stars of Heavy Metal – ever. As for Mick Mars shredding on guitar, live, let’s just say I was afforded an opportunity that night, to see one of the very best guitarists in Heavy Metal history. Thank you for all of the unbelievable Metal over the years, Mick Mars!

5378762O.K., so I am two days belated with saying happy Metal birthday to Angus Young. I am sure Angus Young will not mind. March 31, 2009 marked the big 54th birthday for this Heavy Metal legend. Metal Odyssey speaks for all Metalheads worldwide when we say – HAPPY BIRTHDAY ANGUS YOUNG!!! The incredible, thrilling, heavy duty, pump you up, all-out fabulous & terrific heavy music that Angus Young has given us all to enjoy is a true gift to the world of Metal. (Did I leave out any cool adjectives in that last sentence)? Sometimes, you just have to really be thankful for the Metal musicians who are with us and are still making amazing music throughout these turbulent times.

I will tell you this much, if I ever need an instant “pick me up” or I start feeling sluggish for whatever reason, AC/DC and Angus Young have never failed to energize me yet!! I have been fortunate enough to have seen AC/DC in concert twice in my life. I cherish these two AC/DC experiences, absolutely. I was able to see this legendary band on the “Blow Up Your Video” tour with my best friend of all time, PLUS see them on “The Razor’s Edge” tour with my amazing and totally Metal supportive wife. Angus Young is one cool showman, his musicianship and stage persona for me, is unparalleled. Seeing Angus Young and AC/DC live, well, it is an experience you remember forever! Thank you for the Metal memories and happy birthday Angus Young!
