SLASH Featuring Myles Kennedy And The Conspirators “Apocalyptic Love” – #1 For My Rock ‘N Roll Soul

Posted in classic rock, classic rock albums, Hard Rock, hard rock albums, Heavy Metal, heavy metal news, Music, rock and roll, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , , , , on June 15, 2012 by Metal Odyssey

SLASH – As of June 15th, 2012, my choice for #1 Hard Rock album of the year is Apocalyptic Love. I don’t see that #1 ranking changing either, unless there is a Rock ‘N Roll miracle and some other Hard Rock album knocks me on my ass while I’m begging for Rockin’ mercy. Just isn’t gonna happen. Am I too easy? No. I listen to many, many average albums that I don’t even bother to write about. Apocalyptic Love is different from any other Hard Rock album I’ve digested in 2012; when I feel it, man, it’s like an adrenaline rush that I want to experience again and again.

It’s always going to be a personal thing when it comes to music or any art. I’ve seen the worst looking art at the Modern Museum Of Art that has been crowned timeless and priceless! Then I’ve seen art that I would buy if I was a billionaire. The 13 songs on Apocalyptic Love are so immensely intense with everything I want from a Hard Rock album. You don’t have to be a billionaire to buy into the RNFN’R that Slash, Myles Kennedy And The Conspirators play. This album is Hard Rock for the here and now… and future Rock generations too.

Slash and Myles Kennedy aren’t just a remarkable duo as performers; they are remarkable songwriters as well. Just where will these two men of Hard Rock place on the all-time list of historic Rock ‘N Roll duos in the year 2050? I place them high right now in 2012. It’s not easy to write 13 songs with guitar parts that are all so unique either. No redundancy or short-changing the fans can be heard by my ears on Apocalyptic Love. No shortcuts… period.

With songs like Halo, We Will Roam, Anastasia, No More Heroes and Bad Rain, this album becomes a classic for me… and I haven’t even mentioned the other 8 songs. Yes, Apocalyptic Love is such a moving listen for me that it brings F’n tears to my eyes and ostrich bumps on my arms and face, while lifting me up at times when I’m down. Maybe someone out there knows what I’m talking about, maybe not. I don’t really give a shit. This is about what the album has done for me and my Rock ‘N Roll soul.

Anytime I listen to Myles Kennedy sing, I shake my head and wish Slash met up with him pre-1987 and the other whining singer he once played with became a milk truck delivery driver. I can’t possibly be alone with that feeling and if I am, again, I don’t give a shit. Slash tapped into some kind of mystical Rock ‘N Roll stuff during these post Guns ‘N Roses years and he’s caught Rock ‘N Roll lightning in an F’n bottle. No way will I disregard the magic of Myles Kennedy, however. I’ve never heard such a Hard Rock album such as this. Each song is an F’n hit single; back in the day when the American media actually embraced Hard Rock and Heavy Metal that is.

Picture this: you take the best of what psyches-you-out about old school Hard Rock and couple that with what elevates your soul from Hard Rock today; that combination for me equates to Apocalyptic Love. Rock, Hard Rock and Heavy Metal albums will come and go, only this is an album that isn’t going away for me. I’ll keep this Apocalyptic Love CD within my arms reach for a very, very, very long time. Metal be thy name.

Apocalyptic Love was released on May 22nd, 2012, via DIK HAYD Records.

SLASH Featuring Myles Kennedy LIVE – Made In Stoke 24/7/11: 5 Reasons To Buy This CD

Posted in classic rock, Hard Rock, hard rock albums, Heavy Metal, heavy metal news, live rock albums, Music, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , , , on December 15, 2011 by Metal Odyssey

SLASH Featuring Myles Kennedy LIVE – Back on November 15th, SLASH Featuring Myles Kennedy LIVE / Made In Stoke 24/7/11 was released via Armoury Records. SLASH has a storied career with Guns N’ Roses, Velvet Revolver and his own SLASH’S Snakepit on his enviable Rock ‘N Roll resume.

This set of live songs from the certified Rockin’ career of SLASH is essentially listening to a mandatory chapter of Rock history. I purchased the double CD version, (a 2-CD with a DVD version is out there as well). Check out below my 5 reasons you should BUY this SLASH CD!

1. – This is SLASH, you know, the former and REAL Guns N’ Roses guitarist playing some classic Guns N’ Roses songs. The live versions of Paradise City and Mr. Brownstone (for example) are embellished with the trademark guitar tone and licks of the legendary SLASH. Truly one-of-a-kind is SLASH. Accept no substitutes for I sure as hell don’t.

2.- Myles Kennedy. Yeah, yeah, yeah… Myles Kennedy is no Axl Rose only Axl Rose is no Myles Kennedy either. Myles sounds amazing on this live album and he is a top ten Heavy Music vocalist for my ears any second of any day.

3. – The entire band ROCKS so fluently together on all 21 songs. Seriously, to think otherwise you must be constipated. Todd Kerns (bass, lead & backing vocals), Brent Fitz (drums) and Bobby Schneck (guitar, backing vocals) play tight and sound like they’ve been together with SLASH and Myles for decades.

4. – This live SLASH CD has put me in a good F’n mood each and every time I’ve listened to it. The Rockin’ energy that these live songs give off is contagious to my senses. It’s like I’m getting hit in the face with a psyche-you-out bat, every time I play this addicting CD.

5. FUN. Oh, oh… I just used the “F” word. If you’re not into FUN then this is not the CD for you. For the rest of us who like to jump around and go crazy while listening to our favorite bands and songs, SLASH has kept the F’n FUN in his R&FN’R!

Bonus Reason To Buy: It doesn’t sound like there was an over abundance of production tweaking going on for this live concert recording. Okay, so we live in a digital age, still, the overall RAW Rock ‘N Roll Thunder that SLASH and his band dishes out here is evidence to me, that less is more when it comes to producing a live album in 2011. When I play this live SLASH CD extremely loud, I swear I’m actually there that evening in Stoke… and I wish I really was.

Ronnie James Dio and Yngwie Malmsteen: This Iconic Duo’s Cover Song Of “Dream On” Is A True Hidden Gem!

Posted in classic rock, classic rock music, guitarists, Hard Rock, Heavy Metal, metal music, metal odyssey, Music, rock and roll, rock guitarists, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , on May 16, 2011 by Metal Odyssey

Ronnie James Dio & Yngwie Malmsteen  – On May 16th, 2010, the ultra-legendary Ronnie James Dio passed away after a valiant battle with cancer. This was a day when Metal cried. Hard Rock cried. Rock and Roll cried. I cried. I’ve always lived by a wonderful thought: “Time heals all wounds”. Each time I listen to any DIO, Rainbow, ElfBlack Sabbath and Heaven & Hell song and/or album now, I realize that Ronnie James Dio’s legacy will forever live on.

On the anniversary of Ronnie James Dio passing away, I decided to listen to some of his work that I haven’t pulled out in quite awhile. I remembered having a CD titled: Guitar Gods – The Classic Rock Anthems. On this fantastic CD is a cover song of Aerosmith’s Dream On. Ronnie James Dio sings and Yngwie Malmsteen plays his amazing guitar on this cover song of Dream On. Two legends covering an iconic Rock song, written and recorded by fellow legends. Simply put… the original version and cover version of Dream On are both everlasting.

I can’t even adequately put into words, just how sensational, how riveting this cover song of Dream On is to my senses. Ronnie James Dio sings the lyrics of Dream On in such a remarkable way… it’s Ronnie James Dio. With Yngwie Malmsteen stamping his signature tone to this song, it’s hands down the single greatest cover song I have ever heard of Dream OnMetal case closed. To admit I receive countless ostrich bumps up and down my entire body whenever I listen to this cover of Dream On is real and not fantasy.

This entire CD is a MUST buy for any fan of Rock, Classic Rock, Hard Rock and/or Metal. If there ever was that hidden gem of a Ronnie James Dio song, then this cover of Dream On is it. If there ever was that hidden gem of a Hard Rock/Heavy Metal compilation CD, then Guitar Gods – The Classic Rock Anthems is it. Wanna know something? I found this CD at Kmart about two years ago. Kmart. Metal be thy name and kiss the F’n sky. That is no lie.

Legends are galore on this CD, with Ted Nugent giving his spin on another Aerosmith classic: Rag Doll. The Motor City Madman sings and plays his patented guitar licks on Rag Doll and it’s a hell raiser. Just look at the track listing with the respective artists below, it’s ’nuff said and ring the Metal bell for glory! This CD is so electrified with guitar legends and vocalists that it’s Metal mind boggling.

I’ll say this much: Slash and Roger Daltrey cover Alice Cooper’s Rock classic No More Mr. Nice Guy with Hard Rockin’ brilliance. Whoa, the legenday duo of Slash and Roger Daltrey make an infinite impression on my Metal soul. Steve Lukather covers Pink Floyd’s Shine On You Crazy Diamond… it’s jaw dropping. I truly don’t know what else to say about that. An unreal CD that I have revisited and won’t be putting away again for a very, very, long time.

* Guitar Gods – The Classic Rock Anthems was released back in 2006, via Fantastic Price Records.

* Guitar Gods – The Classic Rock Anthems was mastered by Anthony Focx at Foxhole Underground Studio, Los Angeles.

* I’ve seen this CD for sale at Amazon.com for just under $10 (U.S. funds).

* For some odd reason, I can’t play this CD in my car’s CD player. Every time I slide this CD into the car’s player, it gets sent back out! WTF? However, this CD plays just fine on my home stereo system.

Track Listing:

Slash & Roger Daltrey – No More Mr. Nice Guy

Ted Nugent – Rag Doll

Jimmy Page – Burn Up

Jake E. Lee & Phil Lewis – Journey To The Center Of The Mind

Steve Lukather – Shine On You Crazy Diamond

Rick Derringer – Rock And Roll Hoochie Koo

Santana – Jingo

Pat Travers – Snortin’ Whiskey, Drinkin’ Cocaine

Michael Schenker & Leslie West – Blood Of The Sun

George Lynch – He’s A Woman, She’s A Man

Yngwie Malmsteen & Ronnie James Dio – Dream On

LONG LIVE YNGWIE MALMSTEEN.

LONG LIVE EVERY ROCKIN’ CAT ON THIS CD.

REST IN PEACE, RONNIE JAMES DIO.

Cheap Trick “Silver” – Classic Rock greats captured live!

6676475Cheap Trick is without question, in my top ten of all time favorite bands. That includes all genres of Rock, Hard Rock and Metal too. This is the one band I so desperately need to see live. I honestly cannot believe I never saw Cheap Trick in concert… after all these years. I feel semi-embarrassed in admitting this. Then again, I would have to be a full time concert goer to actually see every band I dig, there are that many… I am confidently certain I am not alone with that thought. Therefore, what makes for the consolation prize instead of seeing Cheap Trick live, is listening to their double CD “Silver”. (Released June 29, 2004). This double live, Cheap Trick bounty of hits commemorates their 25 plus years as a Rock & Roll original. (Yes, “at Budokan” is a legendary live album from Cheap Trick… I have covered that milestone of an album in an earlier post). “Silver” covers a vast array of Cheap Trick hits, from their deep catalog of albums. This live concert captures Cheap Trick in their Rockin’ spontaneous glory… no over dubbing that I can detect.

The legendary Slash (of Gun’s N’ Roses, Velvet Revolver fame, of course), is a guest star guitarist for the tune “You’re All Talk”. Slash is so recognizable with his guitar sound, it is a Rockin’ treat to hear him jam with Cheap Trick. Robin Zander announces after the song ends, that Slash broke a guitar string while playing the first few notes… you will hear bits and pieces of Robin Zander talking to the concert crowd throughout “Silver”. This is what makes a live album really come to life, when the lead singer has the charisma and charm to acknowledge his surroundings, just as Robin Zander does here. Billy Corgan of the Smashing Pumpkins is a guest star guitarist on the tune “Just Got Back”… you can definitely hear the style of Billy Corgan come through on this Rocker of a song. That is two really cool guest guitarists to appear on “Silver”, it is like an added bonus for Hard Rock fans.

Cheap Trick does an unreal cover of the late/great John Lennon classic – “I’m Losin’ You”. Cheap Trick brings this song to Rock & Roll life, Robin Zander’s vocals were tailor made for this Lennon hit. The Beatles “Day Tripper” is yet another Rock & Roll classic that is covered with true Rock reverence by Cheap Trick, in my opinion, a flawless cover. “The Flame”, “Dream Police”, “Surrender”, “Stop This Game”, “That 70’s Song” and “Voices” are all here on “Silver”… never sounding better, a vintage cornucopia of Rock from Cheap Trick. A total of 31 songs are to be enjoyed here on “Silver”, 31 live, Cheap Trick classics! Bun E. Carlos on drums, Robin Zander on lead vocals, Rick Nielsen on guitars and Tom Petersson on bass are at the top of their Rock game during this live concert. I know that Cheap Trick is on tour again this Summer of 2009, from June 23rd through September 6th… with Def Leppard and Poison. (That is a really cool triple bill). Now, I have seen Def Leppard and Poison live in concert over the years… I just need to see Cheap Trick!!!
