HUNTED – The Metal Odyssey Interview

HUNTED – When I first caught up with guitarist Steve Barberini of Hunted, it was at the onset of 2011. Steve and his bandmates, Chris G (vocals), Jon Letson (bass) and Matt “Animal” Thomas (drums), had already wrapped up their debut album Welcome The Dead. With their CD available for Metal consumption, this exemplary Metal band from Cardiff, Wales, were hungry for a record deal. Fast forward to July 29th, 2011 and Hunted have earned that yearned for record deal, courtesy of one kick-ass Metal label known worlwide as Massacre Records.

July 29th, 2011 marks the release date of Welcome The Dead, an album which seamlessly crisscrosses Classic Metal and Power Metal while bestowing Progressive Metal elements within it’s sound. Stone’s suggestion to astute Metal fans across the planet: buy this album!

I can recall the first time that Welcome The Dead entered my eardrums. The Metal polish was all there on Welcome The Dead, from the totality of musicianship to overall production, with just enough raw edginess to make me convinced: this is a Metal band to take serious and tell the world about. The powerful vocals of Chris G, the technical skill and memorable guitar licks of Steve Barberini and the Metal glue that holds it all together with Jon Letson’s bass and Matt “Animal” Thomas on drums, is a listen into what a stupendous Metal album can sound like, when it’s done straight from the heart and not for an overrated record executive who lives and dies by unit sales and chart status.

It didn’t surprise me at all that Hunted decided to conduct an interview with Metal Odyssey as a band, for Hunted plays with such a tight style of Metal on their debut album, coupled with an overall vibe that pulsates: the band is the star. Here is what the members of Hunted had to say:

Stone: How did Hunted come together as a “Progressive” Metal band?

Steve: In all honesty, we never really saw ourselves as a Progressive Metal band and we certainly didn’t set it as our goal either. I guess our music just evolved in such a manner that it became “progressive”. We knew we wanted to create something original yet stay true to our influences and our gut feeling as to what sounds good. It’s possible that in our attempt to achieve originality progressive elements crept into our compositions.

As we started off as a band covering classic bands such as Iron Maiden, Metallica, Megadeth and Deep Purple, the progressiveness just was not really there. However, with time as we started writing our own material, plus the recruitment of new band members with different influences, other bands came to the forefront and I believe strongly influenced the current sound of Hunted. These bands are the likes of Dream Theater, Fates Warning, Symphony X, Nevermore, plus a huge amount more. Furthermore, everyone in the band, albeit to different degrees, listens to distinct genres, for example, Black, Death, Doom, Power and Speed Metal, and as we are a very honest band we try to incorporate each member’s influences into the music. That way, everyone is happy and actually enjoys playing the music, otherwise, what’s the point right?!

I’d also like to add that the progressive side of our music, if at all, is very subtle. If you consider the likes of Dream Theater, they usually use an impressive amount of odd time signatures crammed into a short amount of time (not all songs of course!), whereas if you study our debut album Welcome the Dead you’ll find we may have used a maximum of 3 or 4 different time sigs throughout the entire album. We do, however, enjoy putting together loads of different riffs but always aiming for melodic continuity!

Stone: Where do you draw the line or won’t approach when it comes to topics and/or themes in your lyrics?

Steve: I don’t think there really is a line I wouldn’t cross! Having said that, I certainly would not write about pop-associated cheesy lovey-dovey stuff. Then again, I don’t think I could write about dragons, warriors, and whatnot either. There’s definitely a real life element to our writing. I think most of our lyrics have a bit of a dark cynical approach, singing about real feelings and events that hopefully will touch people and stir-up some sort of emotional anger.

Jon: That’s a really interesting question, man. I’m pretty sure we’d never set out a you shall not pass! kinda thing on any topic but, as Steve said, we just seem to gravitate naturally towards the bigger subject areas, such as religion, human nature and destiny etc. and away from epic romantic power-ballad territory. For now anyways.

Stone: Your covering Nevermore’s The Heart Collector is brilliant! Are you guys friends/in contact with Nevermore?

Steve: Really glad you like it mate! We definitely enjoyed recording it and coming up with slightly different ideas for the song. We actually wrote to Warrel Dane to ask for his “blessing” and permission to cover the song, to our surprise he replied and in a very positive manner too! We were significantly hyped after that! So, we then approached Century Media for permission, etc and the rest well, you’re holding it!

Stone: Steve, you’ve probably been asked this a trillion times already, yet who is the guitar player you most look up to?

Steve: Damn it, I notice your emphasis on “the”, so I guess I can’t give you a full list of players right?! It’s so hard to answer that question man, mainly because I go through or have been through so many different stages of admiring different guitarists. Also, it doesn’t help that so many new amazing players are being discovered all the time. If I had to mention just one player that I seriously admire, in song composition, riffing and leadwork it would probably be Kristian Niemann, of Therion (ex) and Demonoid. This may be a bit surprising to some, but  in my humble opinion, Kristian captures perfectly every time the right tone, speed, technique and feel, that a solo or a full composition should be played with, without overdoing it (like a lot of players!) or underselling it. His sense of melody is outstanding!

Stone: Chris, a two part question, have you ever had vocal lessons or are you that natural born talent? Who is your favorite vocal influence?

Chris G: Nope, never had lessons or vocal coaching as they call it. I’ve had many great sessions with a good mate and great singer when we were still youngsters but that was just a cute competition between our vocal skills at that point in time. Very helpful though!

Influence-wise, many names come to mind but my first vote will go to my favourite one, Ronnie James Dio, for his tremendously passionate and inspiring voice, for his subconscious teachings and meanings that specially have been crafted and been hid between the voice and the lyric for the honoured few to find. For being the reference point for most of the true Metal singers out there, and also for his uncountable contribution to music in general. Then I’ll go for Eric Adams, his amazing range and his unique ability to break down every single word of every sentence, of every lyric and transpose it to something that you instantly believe in and can be part of it. Last but not least, Freddie Mercury, the most impossible man ever, who actually sang Metal during his entire career, without even knowing it!

Stone: Is another album currently in the works?

Steve: Well, as we have just signed to the German Metal giant Massacre Records, they will officially release our debut album on July 29th this year, and subsequently we hope to be recording a follow-up in 2012! I honestly cannot wait to get in the studio again; to hear your own music come to life is such a great feeling! And we actually already have three new cracking songs ready as potential candidates for the album, and we are currently working on a load more. Very exciting as these new tunes are sounding huge!

Jon: Come and see us live if you can, we’re throwing a few new ones in with the Welcome The Dead stuff and I think it’ll definitely give you a feel for the direction we’re heading in with the next album!

Stone: Welcome The Dead has solid production, still there is an air of “old school” I hear and feel that I really dig. Am I alone in this old school thought?

Steve: Definitely not mate! I’d love to bring back that old school feel to Metal and I think everyone in the band feels more or less the same. Some of our influences are very old school, especially those of our singer Chris G and I believe that comes across in his vocal work. There are so many fantastic elements in some of the older Metal masterpieces, such as Fates Warning’s Awaken the Guardian, Crimson Glory’s Transcendence, etc. that I’d love to recreate. Of course, the goal here is to try and capture some of those elements and stitch it up in an original modern production.

Jon: Not at all man, I think a lot of people have picked up the same vibe! I don’t think we ever set out to create an old school sound though. I listen to some of the newer stuff that’s come out in the last few years almost as much as I listen to the legends. I think it’s more the attitude and the ethos of bands like Iron Maiden that inform what we do as a band and I guess (I hope!) that’s what shines through in everything we do.

Stone: If you could choose that one legendary band to open for on a major tour, what band would it be?

Steve: It would have to be Iron Maiden. Simple!

Dan: Iron Maiden if not Britney.

Stone: (laughs) Britney?

Matt: Iron Maiden!

Jon: It’s gotta be Maiden, hasn’t it?!

Chris G: Would love to open for Ronnie James Dio but that’s out of the window now, isn’t it? Shame.

Stone: I guess Iron Maiden it is! I hope the members of Iron Maiden find this out too!

Stone: Collectively as a band, did all of you realize just how astounding Welcome The Dead was going to sound when it was completed? Were there any second thoughts regarding any particular song?

Steve: Can I just say that your kind words are extremely valuable to us, and we are so happy that fans, such as yourself, have connected with the album. The music on the album is very special to us, and we worked very hard at making it the best it could be, despite still being on a tight budget! So, it’s a great feeling knowing that our efforts are being valued and our music is being constantly listened to by real Metal fans!

Did we know we had a decent product once we had finished the album? I think at one point when listening to the final mixes and masters we looked at each other, and without saying much, we knew we had achieved what we had set out to achieve. This was great for us, because unfortunately, after recording 2 to 3 demo tracks we were never really that happy with the outcome. We knew that the album may not appeal to everyone, but it was and is still a definite representation of what we stand for………. and we love it!

We didn’t have second thoughts regarding any particular song, though different arrangements were thoroughly discussed all the time, but we did have to scrap 2 songs that were meant for the album simply due to studio-time. These songs were fully ready-to-go and pre-production seemed to suggest that they’d be cracking songs, so hopefully we can include these in an upcoming album! We know certain people are crying out for them!

Matt: Personally, no second thoughts for me. I think in my mind what an epic final product!

Jon: I think we all started to realise we were heading down a pretty interesting path somewhere near the start of the studio process but, yeah, as Steve said it’s only once you get into the final bits and pieces of post-production that you start to go, ‘wow, this really is gonna work!’

Stone: Is Metal a religion, drug, mistress or all three?

Steve: I would go for religion and a drug! I definitely get a huge kick when I listen to great Metal, in fact, great music in general. The emotional highs you can sometimes reach when you really sit down (or stand up) and absorb all the content and energy of a Metal masterpiece is overwhelming! Also, the manner in which Metal music unites Metal fans, especially at festivals, etc. is somewhat unique I believe and it’s a great thing to be part of!

Dan: All three!

Matt: Definitely keeps me wanting more, so, I’d say all three in a way.

Jon: Hmmm. Metal’s definitely not a bit on the side for me, so I’d have to say it’s more of a missus than a mistress to be honest!

Stone: Describe how getting signed to Massacre Records came about and how thrilled are you guys?

Steve: Yeah! I guess they must have dug our debut album! The band and I are extremely happy with our recent signing to Massacre Records, they are a great label who have had a huge amount of amazing bands on their roster, including the likes of King Diamond, Theatre of Tragedy, Fates Warning, Crematory, etc., so they evidently do a great job! So hell yeah, if our name is on the same list then that’s a significantly immense achievement! I used to listen to these bands all the time and still do every now and then, so it really is an honor!

Jon: It’s great! Massacre’s a fantastic and well-respected label so we all feel pretty damn good at the minute. Another cool thing about it is that it kinda gives you a sense of confirmation that everything you’ve been doing up to this point has actually made sense. Having been doing this for quite a while now, there’ve been a few times when I’ve started to wonder! It’s definitely not time to kick back and think “job well done” though, we’re gonna make sure this is just the beginning…

LOS ANGELES, CA – July, 2011) – A much anticipated follow up album to the successful eponymous debut of a rock band packed with successful veterans – guitar hero Joe Satriani, drummer Chad Smith, former Van Halenbassist Michael Anthony and frontman Sammy Hagar – has garnered a bevy of buzz and rumors that the band is setting straight today with the official announcement of the album title, full track listing, release date and more:“Chickenfoot III” (not IV as previously implied), produced by Mike Fraser (AC/DC, Metallica), is set for worldwide release on September 27th from eOne Music in North America and around the world by earMUSIC/Edel in a special 3D designed package. The album’s lead single “Big Foot,” is set for release on August 2nd.

“I am very proud of the new album,” says lead singer Hagar. “We’re calling the album “Chickenfoot III” because it’s so good, the songs are so tight, it’s like we jumped right past having to make a second record.” He adds, “We’ve established a real trust, Joe and I, we truly bring out the best in one another, and that spreads to the whole band.”

“Chickenfoot III” features 10 tracks with so many moments of epiphany that one can barely take them all in on first listen. Colossal, stadium-shaking riffs abound on earth-movers such as “Alright, Alright,” “Last Temptation,” “Bigfoot,” and “Lighten Up.” Tradition meets innovation on the Nashville pop-tinged “Different Devil,” the Delta-blues flavored “Something Going Wrong”and the aching rock ballad “Come Closer.”

“Come Closer” marks a dramatic twist in that singer Hagar wrote the words first and guitarist Joe Satriani composed the music to suit the lyrics. Elsewhere, Chickenfoot tackles issues such as mortality in “Up Next” and the world’s economy in “Three and a Half Letters” on hard-as-nails cuts that rock the body while filling one’s senses. A teaser video with some music from the forthcoming single “Big Foot” can be viewed on the band’s webpage and YouTube.

Joe Bosso of MusicRadar says, “In an era when the relevance of the album as an art form is under close scrutiny, Chickenfoot comes roaring back with the perfect answer: a superlative, hook-filled rock ‘n’ roll disc that simply must be experienced from start to finish. Tough yet full of intricate textures, played by musicians at the top of their game, this is the kind of record that bands both young and old dream of making.”

“Chickenfoot III” Full Track Listing:

Last Temptation

Alright, Alright

Different Devil

Up Next

Lighten Up

Come Closer

Three and a Half Letters

Big Foot

Dubai Blues

Something Going Wrong

“Chickenfoot III” follows up the band’s 2009 self-titled debut “Chickenfoot”, which was certified gold by the Recording Industry Association of America, topped the charts at #3 on Billboard’s Top Independent albums of 2009 and #88 in the Top 200 Albums of 2009, was supported by performances on TheTonight Show with Conan O’Brien, Jimmy Kimmel Live, an initial sold out 9-city club test tour and rolled into a full 30-city cross-country US Tour. Chickenfoot was named “Best New Band” at Classic Rock Magazine’s annual awards ceremony in London.

The new digital release from New York City-based Doom/Rock outfit THE RESURRECTION SORROW, the meager yet massive three-song The Scorpion Savior Sessions, is now available via iTunes.

While The Scorpion Savior Sessions is only a taste of what the band are working on these days — as the band write and build up to their next full-length album, set for release later this year — the EP stands on its own merit as well, reaping great reviews from media outlets and zines internationally over recent weeks.

Premonition 13 – Debut Album Featuring Scott “Wino” Weinrich & Jim Karow: Releases Today!

Posted in doom metal, Hard Rock, Heavy Metal, metal music, metal odyssey, Music, rock music, rock music news, stoner metal with tags , , , , , , , , , , on July 26, 2011 by Metal Odyssey

PREMONITION 13 – Some, if few, Rock Music legends have redefined the word perseverance and combined it with greatness. Guitarist, vocalist and songwriter Scott “Wino” Weinrich is one of those select few. An underground Heavy Music, Stoner and Doom Metal icon for decades, (The Obsessed, St. Vitus, Spirit Caravan), Wino is on a mission to spread his musical message among both lifelong fans and throngs of new disciples in 2011. Wino’s newest project and debut/self-titled album – Premonition 13, is being released today, July 26th, on Volcom Entertainment.

There are scores of new album releases each week, only there are few creme’ de la creme’s such as Premonition 13 to choose from. Don’t pass up a golden Metal opportunity, to purchase a Heavy Music album of substance, such as Premonition 13. You must hear Wino, a living legend of Heavy Rock Music, a pioneer of Doom Metal, performing at one of his finest hours yet.

Let your ears absorb such molasses heavy tracks as Modern Man and Peyote Road and then become aware, of how a project as Premonition 13 will one day be deemed a classic. Each song on Premonition 13 carries it’s own weight in Heavy Music integrity. Could any less be expected from an album that Wino touches? This is an album that’s absolute in it’s credible message of: strong songwriting combined with an all encompassing heaviness can both inspire and blow your mind away. Premonition 13 is an album that will surely compete mightily, for it’s rightful place on Metal Odyssey’s Best Of lists for 2011.

* Background info on Premonition 13: Wino pairs up with an old friend from The Obsessed days – Jim Karow. The two bonded over jam sessions and discussions on Mesoamerican culture and magnetism. Speaking of magnets, this album makes heavy use of the E-Bow (a handheld guitar effect that uses an electromagnet field to sustain notes).

The Resurrection Sorrow – “Scorpion Savior Sessions”: 3 Song EP Of 100% Heavy Metal

Posted in Heavy Metal, heavy metal news, metal music, metal odyssey, Music, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , , , , , on July 25, 2011 by Metal Odyssey

The Resurrection Sorrow – Back on June 28th, 2011, The Resurrection Sorrow digitally released their 3 song EP: Scorpion Savior Sessions. (These 3 songs have been streaming on the band’s website for a few months prior). These new songs were recorded this past Winter of 2011. The Resurrection Sorrow have released this new EP as a bridge for fans, between their 2009 debut album Hour Of The Wolf and their forthcoming full-length which is scheduled for release later in 2011.

Pale Kiss (Endless Storm) kicks off Scorpion Savior Sessions with thick and heavy grooves, a heaviness that summons the Heavy Metal spirit that our beloved genre was built upon. Each song is saturated with enough Heavy Metal riffs that will no doubt send any old schooler into a swirl of Metal euphoria. As with Valient Thorr and the beyond legendary Motörhead, The Resurrection Sorrow seem to be engulfed with a unique blue collar approach to making Rock n’ Roll. This band’s sound is reflective of a time when Heavy Metal was all about smash-mouth rather than glitz and glam.

Alex Dementia on vocals puts his imprint of raw and dominant strength upon all three songs. Bordering on Death Metal growls with Scorpion Savior, Alex showcases his ability to adjust his vocals from lean to mean and continuously sound like a powerhouse of Metal tones. This is a vocalist that changes the vibes of each song, from bad-ass strong to kick-ass fever, within seconds. Jeff Jardine on guitar is responsible for the heavy riff attack, while lending plenty of potent and vintage inspired licks that remind me: Heavy Metal is still a denim and leather genre.

The rhythm section of Alex Coelho on bass and Louie Gasparro on drums are all about pure thunderous power. Crank these 3 songs up F’n loud and you’ll understand what I’m talkin’ about. It’s cool to actually not hear the cymbals get buried beneath blast beats for a change and Louie just gets the damn Metal job done on drums. The Resurrection Sorrow play Heavy Metal the way it was meant to be heard: loud, powerful, raw and invading… with a double elbow drop to my cranium. Metal be thy name.

(New York, NY) — Veteran Canadian metal quartet KITTIE will release a brand new record entitled “I’ve Failed You” on August 30th, 2011 via eOne Music. For this effort, the band enlisted the talents of Siegfried “Siggy” Meier at Beach Road Studios in Goderich Ontario who took on producing rolls.

KITTIE recently shot a video for their new song We Are The Lamb last month in New York. “‘We Are The Lamb is the first single and is about as musically devastating as we get. It is a tale of self sacrifice, to give those you love a chance to grow and learn to live for themselves. I cannot express to you how proud of this album we are. ‘I’ve Failed You’ is real, honest, angry and ugly” says front woman Morgan Lander.

Fools For Rowan – To Share And Rock Hometown Stage With Evanescence

Posted in alternative metal, alternative rock, gothic metal, Hard Rock, Heavy Metal, metal odyssey, Music, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , , , , , on July 23, 2011 by Metal Odyssey

LOS ANGELES, CA – On August 17th the War Memorial Auditorium in Nashville, Tennessee will host local rockers, Fools For Rowan, and worldwide superstars Evanescence. The 1661 maximum capacity sign will surely be put in jeopardy, at the historic auditorium, as this is Evanescence’s only U.S tour date this year. Fools For Rowan are more than an adequate opening act and are sure to prove to everyone in attendance that they are very capable of being headliners.

Fools For Rowan have most recently been in rotation on Nashville’s independent radio station, Lightning 100, and played the world’s largest music festival, Summerfest earlier this month. Their debut album, Twisted. Tied Up. Tangled as well as their energetic live sets have launched Fools For Rowan on the road to Rock and Roll stardom and has allowed for them to open for artists such as Sick Puppies, Halestorm, Gin Blossoms, Trapt, Adelitas Way and many more.

While Fools For Rowan are teetering with mass U.S appeal, Evanescence are a full fledge musical phenomenon. With over 20 million records sold worldwide and two Grammys to their name; Evanescence is characterized by singer Amy Lee’s masterful melodies and pristine piano.

Fools For Rowan are lead by Erin Mullins‘ soaring vocals, Ryan Harrison Nanney and Rachel Brandsness guitar riffs and the tight battery of Aaron Elliot (bass) and Jordan Cullen (drums). The kinetic quintet continues to tour relentlessly throughout the U.S, winning over audiences and continuing to spread the power of Rock and Roll.

“We’ve been rocking out to Evanescence for years,” the band has said, “So to share the stage with rock heavyweights like them is an honor. It’s better than Christmas!”

Vans Warped Tour ’11 – 2011 Tour Compilation CD: 50 Songs! 50 Bands! = A Rockin’ Bargain To Jump All Over!

Posted in alternative metal, alternative rock, alternative rock albums, Hard Rock, hardcore metal, Heavy Metal, metal music, metal odyssey, Music, Punk rock, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , , , , , , , , on July 18, 2011 by Metal Odyssey

Vans Warped Tour ’11 Compilation CD – The annual compilation CD of Vans Warped Tour was released on June 7th, 2011, on SideOneDummy Records. This 2011 Tour Compilation edition is a double CD Digipak that contains 50 songs from 50 bands! The record label world known for it’s stable of Punk Rock bands along with Vans Warped Tour has released what quite possibly may be the greatest bargain in the Rock Music industry once again. For fans of Alternative Metal, Alternative Rock, Hardcore, Metalcore and Punk Rock, this 2 CD compilation is like a double jolt of Rockin’ lightning, caught in an F’n empty bottle of Guiness.

From PARAMORE  to ELWAY, with A DAY TO REMEMBER in-between, this compilation covers the bands that have recently kept this Vans Warped Tour as a legit leader in the touring Rock festival industry. With the presence of The Devil Wears Prada (Anatomy) and Asking Alexandria (Closure), this compilation is represented fiercely by two young and Extremely Heavy bands that are on the F’n rise.

Rock fans not familiar with the bands affiliated with the ongoing Vans Warped Tour, should benefit immensely from picking up this 2 CD compilation. I picked up my copy new for $5.99 (U.S.) and couldn’t be more satisfied with the overall package of bands and songs. With more Heavy and Extreme bands being added to the bill for Vans Warped Tour in recent years, coupled with the diversity of Alternative, Hardcore and mainstay Punk Rock representation, this is a touring Rock festival that truly knows how to unite Rock genres with one goal in mind: To spread the word of Rock by playing loud, proud and with F’n attitude!

IRON CLAW – A Metal Odyssey Interview: Part One (The Early Days and The Comeback)

IRON CLAW – There are comeback stories in life that sometimes seem too unreal to fathom. Then there is that comeback story that bubbles over with so many feel-good vibes that you cannot hold yourself back from telling any and everyone about it. The comeback of IRON CLAW is both unreal to fathom and multi feel-good. Their Rock ‘n Roll journey all started about forty years ago in Scotland, where they were pioneering a Hard and Heavy sound while touring with the legendary likes of The Kinks and Pink Fairies.

With no coveted record deal during those early years, IRON CLAW became an unspoken and underground legend that went their separate ways. Fast forward to 2011 where the Rockin’ and forward thinking, independent label known as Ripple Music, has IRON CLAW signed, sealed and ready to deliver. On October 4th, 2011, when their new studio album of Hard and Heavy songs is to be released, (A Different Game), IRON CLAW will have defied the odds and proven that perseverance and Classic Rock does cast a magic spell.

Founding member and guitarist Jimmy Ronnie recently took the time to answer some questions for Metal Odyssey, reflecting on the past and present of IRON CLAW. While I researched the story of IRON CLAW, chills and ostrich bumps invaded the skin that covers my entire body. So many inspirational thoughts enveloped my mind, with one thought being: life is truly about second chances. The story of IRON CLAW symbolizes that Rock ‘n Roll dreams do come true… even if it’s forty years in the making. Here is what Jimmy Ronnie had to say:

Stone: When and how did Iron Claw originate?

Jimmy: Iron Claw formed in Dumfries, South West Scotland in the summer of 1969. I was told by someone that Alex Wilson was looking to start a band so I approached him. He knew of the best local drummer, Ian McDougall and that was it! Iron Claw was born.

Stone: What happened to the original vocalist of Iron Claw?

Jimmy: Mike Waller was the original vocalist (1969 – 1971). He left the band to persue other musical interests. Sadly he died in 2008. He was replaced by Willie Davidson in 1971 and Willie stayed with the band until we split in 1974.

Stone: Who were the “well known bands of the time” that Iron Claw played with and/or shared some beers with?

Jimmy: We played with many bands over our first lifetime in the 70’s. Bands such as The Kinks, Pink Fairies, Mick Abrahams Band, Spencer Davis, Barkley James Harvest, East of Eden, the list goes on and on.

Stone: During the early days, what are some fun or bizarre moments you can recall when playing a live gig?

Jimmy: Now you’re asking! I remember turning up at a gig one night and being payed off before we even got into the venue. They were obviously shocked at the sheer sight of us! I can also remenber having to escape from a town once because the local bikers wanted to kill us. I think it had something to do with Alex telling them over the PA to “fuck off”. There was the outdoor festival in Thornhill, Scotland where it rained for hours and the stage went live. I was getting shocks off the guitar strings but the show went on!

Stone: (laughs) Jimmy, those are some very cool and fun flashbacks to share! Simply legendary.

Stone: In the years during Iron Claw’s “hiatus”, what did you and the other band members do for careers?

Jimmy: Oh, it’s a long time to cover, 35 years. I played in various bands and kept my hand in recording self-penned material. The intention was always to get the illusive recording deal but it never happened. Not until 2010 and Ripple came along that is.

Stone: Looking back on the late 60’s and 70’s time period and comparing to the present, do you feel the Rock music industry has lost that “special vibe”?

Jimmy: You could say that. Lots of changes have happened. Some of them good and some possibly not. Technology has brought the possibility of recording music to the masses. In the 70’s it was relatively expensive to record in a studio where you could get quality results. Now you can almost do it in your own living room with a laptop. The internet brings an audience from all over the world to you. These things are good. On the down side, I fear that there are less accomplished musicians breaking through. Not that I’ve got anything against electronic music but there’s a lot of bands out there who can’t play and I personally lose interest in bands like that fairly quickly.

Stone: What was “the moment” that triggered you and the other band members to make a Rockin’ comeback?

Jimmy: It was the relative success of the Rockadrome album Iron Claw that made me think it was worth considering a comeback. There were no great plans in the beginning just “Do some recording and see how it goes”. The Ripple Music offer changed all that immediately.

Stone: What advice are you just ready to give in an instant, to a young and aspiring Rock band in 2011?

Jimmy: You must find and be yourself. Cover other artists, that’s not a problem but stamp your own identity on the songs. Better still, write your own material.

Stone: Iron Claw is embarking on a brand new Rockin’ chapter in 2011. What thoughts go through your mind as your new studio album A Different Game is just weeks away from world wide release?

Jimmy: This is very exciting. Every one of us has long held ambitions to release an album that we are proud of and at last, we’ve fulfilled that dream. It’s only taken a lifetime! This is the best studio work that Iron Claw has ever done. Not to say that it’s perfect. It’s Rock n’ Roll and therefore it shouldn’t be anyway. But the songs are strong, the band is tight and it sounds great. What more can you want?

Stone: What bands do you guys admire and have been influenced by in the past? Any bands
you admire/listen to regularly now?

Jimmy: Original influences are the Electric Blues and Rock bands from late 60’s early 70’s such as Cream, Free, Black Sabbath, Led Zep, Johnny Winter and lots more besides. Who do we admire now? Dream Theater, Joe Satriani, Jeff Beck and any other Classic Rock artists that have survived and are still playing.

Stone: Thank you Jimmy, Ian, Alex and Gordon… for never giving up on a dream!

IRON CLAW – “A Different Game”: Bluesy, Classic Hard Rock That Points To The Past And Leads Us To The Present

Posted in classic rock, classic rock albums, classic rock bands, Hard Rock, hard rock albums, Heavy Metal, heavy metal news, metal odyssey, Music, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , on July 15, 2011 by Metal Odyssey

IRON CLAW – Step aside, Anvil… there’s a Rock n’ Roll comeback story that blows yours into the stratosphere. IRON CLAW is the Rock n’ Roll comeback story of legend. We’re looking at a band that hasn’t released new material in nearly forty years and now A Different Game will be set loose upon the Rock Music world on October 4th, 2011, on Ripple Music. For IRON CLAW, it is “a different game” and they haven’t a thing to lose, only amazing praise to gain from anyone who respects and enjoys beyond memorable Classic Hard Rock and vintage Heavy Metal.

You see, IRON CLAW was playing their brand of Heavy Rock at live gigs when Heavy Metal was just getting it’s name. The early 70’s were the building blocks for the Hard Rock and Heavy Metal that we all cherish deeply in 2011… and IRON CLAW was there… planting the seeds. Touring during the early years with the legendary likes of The Kinks, Spencer Davis and Pink Fairies, (to name a few), IRON CLAW easily can be considered an important underground player within the structure of the British Rock Movement. Without a “coveted” record contract, the Rock history books have overlooked too many silent legends, the pioneers of Heavy Metal and Hard Rock such as IRON CLAW. With A Different Game, their role in Rock history shall never go unspoken again.

Stone at Metal Odyssey won’t overlook IRON CLAW, no Metal way. If you have even a sliver of Hard Rock or vintage Heavy Metal in your Rock n’ Roll soul, you too will not overlook IRON CLAW and their forthcoming Hard Rock gemstone: A Different Game. Life is funny and filled with surprises. IRON CLAW has been my most personal biggest Rock n’ Roll surprise I’ve ever encountered in my entire Metal lovin’ and Hard Rockin’ life. With all this said, you can’t possibly short change yourself from being a part of what I consider to be “one of”, if not “the biggest” Rock n’ Roll comebacks in Rock Music history and it’s IRON CLAW –  A Different Game.

(L to R: Jimmy (guitar), Gordon (vocals), Ian (drums) and Alex (bass))

These Rockin’ dudes from Scotland would never have considered even an attempt at a comeback, if they felt this new album wasn’t their best work of their lives. It is their best work. A Different Game contains the thick and muscular riffs from Jimmy Ronnie’s guitar that will guarantee to make the iconic Tony Iommi nod with approval and pride. Jimmy can jam, so go spread the Rockin’ word. As I listen to Jimmy Ronnie play guitar on this album, I realize that a new page must be added to any and all coffee table books on Rock guitarists. Add a chapter for this entire band in any Rock Music encyclopedia… right now. Their songs are that fantastic.

A Different Game is a reminder that Rock n’ Roll was born from the Blues and Gordon Brown’s vocals will have you searching to see if he ever “once” sang for Deep Purple. So fluid, so classic is the voice of Gordon’s that I swear he has a famously storied Rock career, one that VH1 would have a documentary on… only it’s all heard and told here on A Different Game. Alex Wilson on bass and Ian McDougall on drums play in rhythmic old school unison, fostering those visions of a world without big brother watching you and FM programming returning to AOR formats.

The relevance of IRON CLAW lies in the Hard Rockin’ and Bluesy sound they are so gifted at playing and is what countless bands of any age are trying to capture to this very day. Before I sat down to write this review on A Different Game, I wondered how inappropriate it would be to not call out individual songs and break ’em down. Then, the realization poured over me: what in the hell is there to point out, other than this IRON CLAW album holding it’s Hard Rock merit valiantly as a whole? IRON CLAW is a band that was bred when listening to an album from front to back was second nature. My album review here is one of totality and A Different Game is the total Classic Rock package.

A Different Game must be listened to and enjoyed from beginning to end. The underlying and deliberate rawness of sound, coupled with this bands old school style and musicianship, may hopefully be utilized one day as a blueprint to a young band’s future, while also serving as a reminder to us seasoned Rockaholics that the past is never a closed book. Instead, the roots of Rock are a never ending gateway and guide to where Rock Music is today and tomorrow. IRON CLAW has returned and their unfinished business might just Rock your world… It’s Rocked mine.
