FRONTIERS RECORDS – Take a look and listen below to 3 fantastic album releases from Frontiers Records! Releasing in North America on May 22nd are new studio albums from GREAT WHITE (Elation), HARDLINE (Danger Zone) and WIG WAM (Wall Street). A triple dose of Rockin’ good-times! Metal be thy name!
Let’s face it, not every band that hibernates for a number of years (or decades) is going to have a successful comeback. (I’ll get back to this momentarily). I have written numerous album reviews that involve successful comebacks. At least I think they were successful. Trixter and Mr. Big have both released above amazing comeback albums, in my Metal opinion. Tyketto really surprised and psyched the living daylights out of me, with their new (and memorable) comeback album: Dig InDeep.
My open letter to any past successful band and/or musician thinking about recording a comeback album includes some realistic thought. With the Rock, Hard Rock and Metal markets saturated with bands of all generations, all vying for the same money and audiences; many very good new album releases do get lost in the shuffle, regardless if they kick ass. Therefore, a “comeback album” has to consist of unreal quality music with unreal memorablesongs. Usingsmoke and mirrors while resting on laurels doesn’t work anymore. Period. Without quality songs and non-rusted musicianship, any comeback album will fall flat on its face.
Dud Exhibit B:Black ‘n Blue – Hell Yeah!
A once famous “name” isn’t a guarantee of fortune and fame. Lita Ford found that out back in 2009 with her comeback studio “effort” called: Wicked Wonderland. The once popular 80’s Hard Rock band Black ‘n Blue released a mammoth dud with their comeback album from 2011: Hell Yeah! Whoa, it’s a dud. Here in 2012, we have Sledge Leather making a magical comeback. Their new album, Imagine Me Alive, is not that good. As a matter of fact, it sounds like it was slapped together in 3 or less days. Structurally, the songs on Imagine Me Alive lost me and It’s all a complete mess.
I will be the first to admit, in recent years, with the 80’s Hard Rock and Heavy Metal resurgence, many old school bands have Rocked my face off with their comeback albums. Hello KISS and Whitesnake. Then you have the Doobie Brothers and Iron Claw releasing albums of 100% Rockin’substance; both of their comeback albums I still can’t get enough of. Anthrax released an unbelievably grand comeback album with Worship Music; plus they play unquestionably kick-ass live today as they did during the 80’s.
Not all comeback albums are pretty and yet many are gems. Sample songs on the internet and read a few album reviews before you make a comeback album purchase. Metal be thy name.
SWEET – When I first learned of this cover song album, I realized there really is no better Rock ‘N Roll band in the land than Sweet, that could celebrate such revered Classic Rock songs. Then again, I believe Def Leppard could pull it off too. Regardless, this is Sweet in 2012 and the legendary Andy Scott (founding member, guitarist, vocalist) has once again proven that his bands legacy is stronger than ever; through the Hard Rockin’ cover song album New York Connection.
Without question, I fell head over heels for the cover of New York Groove. I truthfully played this song upon my first introduction to it, let’s say, twenty times in a row? The soaring vocals! The steady upbeat vibes and total good-times feel of New York Groove came at me in Rockin’ waves! Then, once I listened to all eleven songs on New YorkConnection, those amazing Rockin’ and good-times vibes never subsided!
Ring the Metal Odyssey bell and tell all the nations, that Sweet has signed, sealed and delivered Rock ‘N Roll jubilation!
After all these years, the sound of Sweet still comes packaged with full-throttle relevance. Andy Scott and his band did a fabulous job at keeping the original Rock essence and stylings of these eleven classics intact; while truly making these said classics their own. With drummer Bruce Bisland singing lead vocals on BlitzkriegBop, Sweet kept the Punk in every beat of this song! The one song Andy Scott sings lead vocals on is The VelvetUnderground’s Sweet Jane. Excellent stuff. Metal be thy name does Sweet elevate Sweet Jane to an unreal Hard Rockin’ level of pure joy.
Keyboardist Tony O’Hora sings lead vocals on Because The Night and he righteously nails it. Bassist PeteLincoln sings lead vocals on the rest of the songs and he is a Rockin’ treat to listen to. Pete’s vocals maintain that spirit of vintage Sweet. On Broadway has never been given a Hard Rockin’ shine like the one you’ll hear on this album. With all I’ve stated about the vocals; throw in the signature tones of Andy Scott’s guitar, with each musicians contribution to the songs and this covers album illuminates my eardrums into Classic Rock overdrive!
Like their legendary peers of Mott The Hoople, Badfinger and Uriah Heep, (to name only a few), Sweet is a band that justifiably originated Hard Rock outside the iconic Beatles, Rolling Stones, The Doors, The Who and The Animals. My point being; the legacy of Sweet continues onward in 2012 and the Rock historical importance of this band goes far beyond what any misinformed “Rock historians” at the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame may think. This is a band whose legacy, influence and image helped pave the way for many bands that dominated on Sunset Strip back in the 80’s; I’m not bashful about reminding my Metal brethren of that.
The grand thing is Rock ‘N Roll history can never be erased and New York Connection is 100% proof of that. Sweet (both past and present) is a quasar in Rock ‘N Roll history. This band should be celebrated by Rock fans across all genres in 2012. I highly recommend you celebrate Rock ‘N Roll history with Sweet, by buying and playing LOUD this exceptional cover song album they’ve created and call New York Connection.
Back at the beginning of the year, I purchased Revelator; the debut from Tedeschi Trucks Band. This is a CD that I found myself plopping into the car’s player and letting the Rock ‘N Roll from this exquisite band soar. DerekTrucks is simply put, a wow guitarist. Susan Tedeschi is simply put, a wow vocalist.
Fabulous songs and so many tones and rhythms happening from a vast assembly of musicians; that it’s a whirlwind of musical bliss. Anyone unfamiliar with Susan Tedeschi should think: Sheryl Crow. Fans of so many Rock genres can get a kick out of what Derek Trucks and Susan Tedeschi have accomplished with their band here. Quality personified.
It was sad to hear that Adam Yauch passed away on Friday, May 4th. A founding member of the Beastie Boys is no longer around and he left way too young. Metal Odyssey expresses condolences to the family, bandmates, friends and fans of Adam Yauch.
An album I have caught onto this past week is: Michael Thompson Band – Future Past. This potent dose of AOR and Melodic Hard Rock was released back on February 24th of this year, via Frontiers Records. Michael Thompson is superb on guitar and keyboards. Michael Thompson has been a name in the world of Rock and Pop since the late 80’s, with a who’s who list of legendary celebrities he has played for; from Michael Jackson and CelineDion to Vince Neil.
Vocalist Larry King (no, not the dude who retired from CNN) has an amazing voice. A trademark AOR/Melodic Rock voice. My ears surely dig how he sings these songs on Future Past. I’ve enjoyed listening to Future Past so much, I am hoping Michael Thompson will create more studio albums with Larry King. Good stuff. I also hope to write more about this album in the near future.
I don’t know about you, yet I am blown away by the album artwork of the new Municipal Waste album cover for TheFatal Feast. Justin Osbourn of Slasher Design created this fantastic cover. If Metal Odyssey adds a new award category of album artwork for the “Best Of” year-end lists; The Fatal Feast will be a muscular Metal contender! Add this one to my list of Metal albums I want to write more about… soon.
Municipal Waste – The Fatal Feast was released back on April 10th of this year, via Nuclear Blast America.

Okay. Those are my Metal and Rock ‘N Roll thoughts for Saturday, May 5th, 2012. Comment on them please! The Metal Odyssey boss said I need to draw more Metal commentary; otherwise I will be yelled at badly. Have a Rockin’ and cool Metal weekend. Also… If you still rent VHS tapes… “be kind and rewind.”
HALESTORM – Below are the June and July 2012 tour dates for Pennsylvania’s Hard Rockin’ HALESTORM. Their new chart successful album The Strange Case Of… was released back on April 10th, via Atlantic Records. Check ’em out below to see if Lzzy Hale and her band will be in your area! Metal be thy name.

JEFF SCOTT SOTO – This past March 23rd, Jeff Scott Soto’s fifth full-length album, Damage Control, was released via Frontiers Records. Melodic Hard Rock, 80’s Arena Rock, Rock and AOR fans should find no problem embracing the songs on Damage Control; I’ve embraced them and I will tell you why:
01 – Jeff’s voice. Whoa. Harmonious, melodic and so damn smooth. Rockin’ cool smooth. If I can put Joe Lynn Turner on a pedestal all of my Rockaholic life, then Jeff Scott Soto shares that same pedestal.
02 – The Songs. It always comes down to quality and I don’t care if it’s Extreme Metal or Melodic Hard Rock that I’m listening to… the songwriting has to be standout. Damage Control could easily have been titled: 11 Standout Songs.
03 – Inspirational. Wether it’s the lyrics, the vibes or a combination of both, Damage Control makes me feel good and feeling good is something I usually invite into my Rock ‘N Roll soul. Give A Little Moreand Look InsideYour Heartare my top two exhilarating listens, on this album of melodically fortified and memorable Hard Rock.
04 – Quality Musicianship. Um, do you think Jeff Scott Soto would surround himself with anything less? This is an artist who has Yngwie Malmsteen, Talisman, Journey and Trans Siberian Orchestra on his prolific resume, therefore, Damage Control is an album that’s built-to-last and stand the test of Rock ‘N Roll time.
05 – One Of The Best. In my Metal opinion, Jeff Scott Soto is one of the best male vocalists I’ve ever listened to. It’s not all about Heavy Metal with Jeff’s career and his voice can carry through a range of music genres. DamageControl is a significant piece of work for Jeff Scott Soto; this album doesn’t go over any Pop Rock deep end and it Rocks like 80’s Journey meets Bent Out Of Shape era Rainbow.
TRIXTER – After reuniting back in 2007, the original lineup of TRIXTER have performed at Rocklahoma (2008) and the 2010 M3 Rock Festival, (to name a couple), therefore they have stayed relevant and in the scene in recent years. The last studio album from New Jersey’s TRIXTER was Hear!, released back in 1992 on MCA Records. It’s been a long time for patient fans of TRIXTER to finally sink their Hard Rockin’ ears into a new studio album from this band… the wait is over!
New Audio Machine will be released on April 20th (Europe) and April 24th (North America) on Frontiers Records. For longtime fans of TRIXTER, this new album has been well worth the wait! This is the second time this week I will state: Sound the Hard Rock bells of glory, tell your children this story and open the flood gates to AOR & Melodic Hard Rock euphoria! With both the new TYKETTO and TRIXTER albums crossing my path this week, I feel like I’ve hit the Melodic Hard Rock lottery.
(One of) my favorite tracks on New Audio Machine is Physical Attraction. The Arena Rock vibes overflow from this entire album, only Physical Attraction just turns up the psyche-out meter to a combustion level for me. With songs like Get On It and Ride, I fully realize that TRIXTER has tapped into their gold selling past and made certain to make a song that resonates both relevancy and old school Hard Rockin’ glory.
I’m very impressed by each and every song on New Audio Machine. Forget about any “instantly memorable song” here. This entire album is instantly memorable. This new album from TRIXTER should be marketed as a Hard Rock & Good Times Companion. Lead vocalist Peter Loran sounds reborn. The entire band plays like a Hard Rock mission statement that reads: “We shall ROCK your faces off and you shall beg for more!”
Yes, I am begging for more. The all-inclusive Melodic Hard Rock vibes and power that is generated from this album comes across very real to me. Big guitar riffs, leads and solos ablaze throughout this album. Psche-you-out chorus abounds from every turn. A booming rhythm section. An all-encompassing blanket of super-charged Hard Rock bliss is thrown upon me from New Audio Machine.
If you’re a TRIXTER fan, get ready to celebrate or keep that celebration going for this superb comeback album. For other fans of Melodic Hard Rock, Classic Rock and AOR… don’t make the foolish mistake of passing over New AudioMachine. As TRIXTER puts it best: “Rock ‘N Roll will save your soul.” My mission is done here now. The rest is up to you… just remember… TRIXTER IS BACK!!
Metal be thy name.

TYKETTO – While staying relevant in recent time by performing in some of the worlds most notable Heavy Rock Festivals (Sweden Rock Festival, Download, Firefest and Hard Rock Hell to name a few) TYKETTO realized their fans were still out there and a new studio album was in order. Nearly two decades since their last studio album (1995’s Shine) Dig In Deepwill be released on April 20th (Europe) and April 24th (North America) via Frontiers Records.
What’s that I hear? As I stopped writing this review, I peered out my office window to see what all the hoopla was outside. I noticed AOR, Melodic Rock, Hard Rock and Classic Rock fans dancing in the street, with their arms stretched out to the sun-filled sky. Yes, TYKETTO is back baby… and the Melodic Rockin’ ride you’ll hear on Dig In Deep is an exclamation point on this band’s musical career. When any 80’s or 90’s Heavy Rock band wants to make a comeback again, they should be required to listen to Dig In Deep.
Are you looking for that new Hard Rock album that seamlessly flows from one song to the next, while never letting up on the ROCK that makes your soul ROLL? Dig In Deep. Have you been yearning to hear real Hard Rock vocals once again, you know, that are not sugar-coated with the carbon-copy and computer enhanced Modern Hard Rock tones? Hello, Danny Vaughn.
Let’s talk guitar. Hard Rock guitar that’s both melodic and riff-tastic. Did I mention uncontrollably memorable too? Step in, Brooke St. James. Trust me my Hard Rock brethren… TYKETTO is back, baby. Sound the Hard Rock bells of glory, tell your children this story and open the flood gates to AOR & Melodic Hard Rock euphoria, cause TYKETTO has conquered the status quo and kicked the shit out of the Melodic Hard Rock doldrums with Dig In Deep.
Rhythm section? Jimi Kennedy (bass & backing vocals) and Michael Clayton (drums) are the thunderbolt and drumfire, respectively, on this amazingly habit-forming album of melodically driven songs. Hey, I just realized, there is a band out there that does give a shit about creating the complete album of songs still. They call themselves TYKETTO, by the way. Lead single? Screw that. Try this on for size: lead album. It’s called Dig In Deep.
By the time I caught my breath, after God knows how many listen throughs of Dig In Deep I joyously endured, the realization that TYKETTO has written and recorded once again, resulting in these eleven songs, made me feel like I’ve been beamed up to Happyville U.S.A. where the beers are always free and mp3’s don’t exist. A candidate for “Comeback Album Of The Year”. Hard Rock as my witness and Metal be thy name.
What’s my favorite song on Dig In Deep? It isn’t This Is How We Say Goodbye. Ballads still suck most of the time in Stone’s world. This ballad doesn’t close out Dig In Deep on a high note. Nonetheless, a finely written song that will probably make someone cry out there. Whaaaaaa! The title track, Faithlessand Sound Offare my three choice-cuts on this album of choice cuts… and this new TYKETTO album has (minus that last ballad) thoroughly ROCKED MY ASS OFF.
Excuse me now… as I head out to the street to join in with the hoopla…

Love To Love
Here’s Hoping It Hurts
Battle Lines
The Fight Left In Me

FURYON – If you’re a fan of Hard Rock, Melodic Hard Rock and/or Melodic Heavy Metal, then do yourself a favor today and click on that FURYON video below. Disappear Again is sweltering with melodic guitars and vocals, along with more hooks than a fishing supply store on Cape Cod, Massachusetts. To say this song is an addictive listen (for me) is a gross understatement.
I wanted to hear an album or song this morning that would kickstart my Saturday into high Rockin’ gear, thus I turned to a band and album I’ve yet to check out until now. I am battling a stupid-ass cold and received a welcomed “lift” from a song that I wound up listening to at least 15 (or more) times while I slapped this post together. Disappear Again isthatsong. One damn vibrant rhythm section. Very cool guitar licks and the vocals of Matt Mitchell are stuff of 80’s Arena Rock jubilation.
The all-encompassing Melodic Hard Rockin’ vibe that FURYON delivers on this song has made my F’n day. Looks like FURYON has a nomination for Metal Odyssey’s Hard Rock song of 2012… signed, sealed and delivered. Metal be thy name.
The debut album from FURYON, Gravitas, will be released on March 23rd, 2012 in Europe and March 27th in North America. FURYON is signed to the ultra-Rockin’ Frontiers Records.

ZZ TOP – Legends. Rock ‘N Roll Hall Of Famers. Mammoth Influence on all genres of Rock. Now then, when a cover song album of ZZ Top songs is released, these “covers” better be damn good. I can’t stand it when a band or musician just messes around with a Rock classic and “thinks” their famous name alone will give them a pass. Not here folks. I will present to you: The Good, The Bad & The Ugly when it comes to these ZZ Top cover songs I’ve been listening to on: A Tribute From Friends. Plus, I won’t be swayed by the fact that these are “friends” of ZZ TOP. Sometimes “friends” can ruin a classic song without even trying.
Let’s get right to it, shall we?
______________________________________
THE BAD:
The opening track is Sharp Dressed Man performed by TheM.O.B. Who’s The M.O.B.? Mick Fleetwood, StevenTyler and John McVie. At first, I found this song fun. Then, it irritated the living hell out of me. All I kept picturing was The M.O.B. performing this song at a senior citizen Summer picnic or some Sunday afternoon church fair, with all in attendance going crazy for it. When a cover song sounds “old” and trudging… that’s what happens to my imagination.
Somehow Wolfmother had Cheap Sunglasses thrown in their lap to cover. Not good. I dig the first two studio albums from Wolfmother, only I don’t grasp this cover of Cheap Sunglasses. Annoying. I’ll have to admit, this is the first time I’ve ever been not keen to Andrew Stockdale’s vocals. Another problem is, this cover song sounds way too much like… Wolfmother. A disinterested Wolfmother at that.
THE UGLY:
So sorry that a Rockaholic and Metalhead like myself had NO clue who Wyclef Jean is until now. Rough Boy sounds so over-covered here entirely. Come on now, a Hip Hop / R&B artist covering a ZZ Top song? That is not an entirely bad idea, as long as this song is on an album of covers from ALL artists of Wyclef Jean’s genre.
This song unfortunately doesn’t fit in with the “Rock” flow for me, on this album. To my ears, Rough Boy was as “commercial” as it could get for ZZ TOP back in 1986 and this cover only magnifies it’s “Pop” personality to an embarrassing level. If Wyclef Jean is a friend of ZZ Top’s, then ZZ TOP should have remembered: “friends don’t let friends cover their songs”.
THE GOOD:
Nickelback. Yes, Nickelback. This love ’em or hate ’em Hard Rockin’ band knocked it out of the Classic Rock park with their cover of Legs. This song does sound like Nickelback, yet they did not stray from the non-stop Rockin’ groove that this song originally was all about. Nickelback just gave it more heaviness.
Daughtry. Yes, Daughtry. This guy sings Waitin’ For The Bus / Jesus Left Chicago as if he really digs and feels the song thoroughly. I make NO apologies, Chris Daughtry sings this ZZ TOP classic straight from the heart. Hell, that’s how it comes across to me anyways. Plus, Daughtry didn’t screw around with this songs tempo or try to “reinvent the F’n wheel” with it.
Mastodon. These guys gave Just Got Paid their signature stamp of progressiveness without even trying. Turning JustGot Paid into a relevant Hard Rock song that smokes was obviously… the mission of Mastodon.
Filter covers Gimme All Your Lovin‘ with a grand Alternative meets Industrial sound that is admirable. It’s Filter. The legendary Billy F Gibbons lends his vocals and electric guitar to La Grange. Cool. The remaining tracks are fine listens, just watch out for the bad and the ugly. Don’t say I didn’t warn you.
* ZZ TOP – A Tribute From Friends was released back on October 11th, 2011, via Show Dog / Universal.

SUNSTORM – Excuse me for my uncontrollable smile as I write this… the legendary Joe Lynn Turner has returned again with another studio album of 100% pure Melodic Hard Rockin’ energy with Sunstorm and it’s titled: Emotional Fire. With such an extensive history of music and vocal sessions that Joe Lynn Turner has been an integral part of, coupled with talented songwriting from Soren Kronkvist, Tom and James Martin and Daniel Palmqvist, the 11 songs heard on Emotional Fire are beaming of both AOR and Melodic Hard Rock/Rock ultra-quality.
With the undeniably talented nucleus of Sunstorm still intact, this third album from them is one to play loud and over again. Joe Lynn Turner is so close to perfect on vocals on Emotional Fire that it’s scary. Okay, Joe’s vocals sound perfect to my ears anyways. While I listen to Joe sing Gina, I’m thinking hell, covering a Michael Bolton song is not a bad move at all. Just a terrific up-tempo song that resonates with melodic fever.
The opener for Emotional Fire is an inspiring listen called Never Give Up. Both musically and vocally, Never Give Up is signed, sealed and delivered with absolute emotion. This is a Hard Rockin’ song to listen to when the Metal chips are down, whoa. The title track, Emotional Fire, is an exquisite listen into the legendary vocals of Joe Lynn Turner. The vocal harmony from Joe Lynn Turner just rises to the top and spills over throughout this title track (and entire album for that matter).
Please understand, that this is not about a “once a fan, always a fan” album review for Sunstorm and Joe Lynn Turner. This is about letting those who care know, that Joe Lynn Turner is still a premiere Hard Rock vocalist and after all these years, doesn’t give off a single micro-sign of vocal fatigue. Sunstorm is a side project that is tailor fitted for Joe Lynn Turner. Whether it’s an oozy ballad (All I Am) as this album’s closer or a much heavier hitter like Torn In Half, Joe Lynn Turner can belt out the notes with seamless and confident execution.
The musicians of this Sunstorm project are a treat to listen to. Uwe Reitenauer on guitars is all about Classic Rock meets Hard Rock delight. The rhythm section of Chris Schmidt (drums) and Dennis Ward (bass, partial guitars, backing vocals) are rocklike and play with an affluent flair. Justin Dakey on keyboards gives this album a retrospective feel and vibe that will have you wishing MTV was a real Rock music video channel once again.
Any fan of Classic Rock, Melodic Hard Rock/Rock and AOR should dance themselves silly around their neighborhood after listening to Emotional Fire. Stone Says: A Message to The Grammy Awards and anyone affiliated to not acknowledging the late Jani Lane at the 54th Grammys: You should all be embarrassed for the omission of this talented vocalist, musician and songwriter. Jani Lane helped shape Hair Metal and late 80’s Hard Rock, while being a major part as to why Warrant sold multi-millions of albums. The Grammys exhibited a true act of irresponsibility by being so oblivious to Jani Lane’s passing.
GARY MOORE – Live At Montreaux 2010 was released back on September 20th, 2011, via Eagle Records. The legendary Gary Moore had performed at the 44th Montreux Jazz Festival back in 2010. The Festival dates were July 2nd through July 17th of that year. This world-famous festival also showcased the following diverse lineup of bands in 2010: Simply Red, Phil Collins, Billy Idol, Norah Jones, Roxy Music, Mark Knopfler, Tori Amos, Herbie Hancock, Joe Bonamassa and Missy Elliott (to name a several few).
Seven months to the day, after this Montreux performance, Gary Moore passed away from a heart attack. February 6th, 2011 was a very sad day for music indeed. I remember my first time listening to a Gary Moore album in its entirety and it was 1984’s Victims Of The Future. When I first saw Gary Moore in the music video for Shapes Of Things, I was hooked. I thought to myself so long ago… this dude is not acting, this dude is real.
As the Gary Moore discography of Blues piled-up, I regretfully didn’t keep up. Over the years, my habitual leanings towards the “heavy stuff” and being broke time and again seemed to detour my buying habits. It’s okay though, at least I have a Gary Moore want list that I can enjoy filling and exploring still. Plus I’ve held onto Still Got The Blues on cassette after all these years!
Recently, I came across this live Gary Moore CD at Best Buy. I knew I wasn’t leaving the store without it. The whole reality of Gary Moore passing away hit me as well once again, as I held onto this CD. I wasn’t going to be a turd and pass over fine wine for a beer on this shopping trip for music. Not this time. Honestly, this CD surprised the daylights out of me for the track listing screamed of the Hard Rock side of Gary Moore’s late 80’s career. I felt like time froze as I approached the check-out at Best Buy. Really.
As I drove home with this newly purchased Gary Moore CD playing, it felt so right. It also felt so grand to hear Gary Moore playing his harder stuff live too. Odd as it sounds, yet, Gary Moore was alive once again through his music and I just became lost in the midst of these live songs. Gary Moore played three brand new songs at this Montreux Festival and they are included on this album. The new songs are: Days Of Heroes, Where Are You Now and Oh Wild One.
All three new songs that Gary Moore and his band performed are sensational to say the least. Days Of Heroes is vintage Hard Rockin’ Gary Moore. Where Are You Now can be considered a ballad due to its tempo, still, Gary Moore lays his guitar parts and solo down with an exquisite touch, giving this song a Rockin’ edge that is difficult to shake from my brain. The Wild Frontierand After The War days are summoned up by Gary Moore in dazzling fashion, with Oh Wild One. Man, is this a melodic Hard Rock song that became instantly imbedded in my head! Whoa.
The entire band that Gary Moore assembled for this 2010 tour and Montreux performance are seasoned pros (see band lineup below). Honestly, they played damn tight together during this performance and its damn right refreshing to hear such a level of quality from them. Gary Moore just downright shines vocally and (of course) on guitar throughout each song. This live production never comes across as being “tinkered with”, it’s as live as it gets to my senses.
There are guitar legends and then there are those guitar legends that play with such emotion, that their guitar tones come across as vocals to me. Gary Moore was/will forever remain one of those guitar legends for my senses. Just listen to Blood OfEmeralds and So FarAway/Empty Rooms and hopefully you’ll understand what I mean. A mammoth of a song is Blood Of Emeralds, so fullyenriched with Gary Moore’s guitar playing and it simply moves me.
Please pardon my lengthy review for this live gem, only this Gary Moore album I could write about for another 50,000 words or so. However, I will come to a close by saying this is a live Gary Moore album that I’ll cherish for the rest of my life. I never had an opportunity to see Gary Moore live so this is as close as it gets. It’s amazing how music can change your mood for the better. Gary Moore Live At Montreux 2010 just elevates my spirits and reminds me once again, that what I was hearing way back in 1984 was real after all… and that was the guitar of Gary Moore.
The Band:
Gary Moore – vocals, guitar
Neil Carter – keyboards, vocals, guitar
Jon Noyce – bass
Darrin Mooney – drums

VAN HALEN – As I pondered about what and how to write my review for A Different Kind Of Truth, these two realizations came over me: A. this album simply ROCKS and B. What can I possibly write that hasn’t already been written, debated and tossed around by countless other fans, bloggers, websites and the mainstream press? Whenever a titanic sized band releases a titanic “comeback” album, such as Van Halen has done, the Rock media world can get obviously flooded with album reviews and for good reason.
Having brothers Eddie and Alex Van Halen join Hard Rockin’ and Heavy Hittin’ forces with David Lee Roth once again, on a full-length album, a long-awaited return of this magnitude since the RIAA Diamond Certified – 1984,is something special for fans of this band, (myself included). This Rock historic reunion becomes extra special, due to this new studio album resonating such a vintage returnto form for Van Halen. Whoa, this album ROCKS. Regardless of when any “parts” of any of the songs were written for A Different Kind OfTruth, I’m in the crowd that cares only if the songs were written by members of Van Halen… and not ABBA.
Did I mention that this new Van Halen album ROCKS? Anyhow, life is short and when authentic Hard Rock and Heavy Metal can be written and recorded by this iconic band of the Rock music world and delivered to their patient fans, (there hasn’t been a Van Halen studio album released in 14 years), then there is valid cause for Rockin’ jubilation. This is not a reunion of a band that released a lone chart topping album 25 years ago. Van Halen dominated arenas and stadiums then… and will still now. This is a reunion of a band that can easily boast as much “important” musical influence as the likes of “American” Rock historic legends KISS, Aerosmith and The Doors, (to name a few).
Diamond Dave’s hair may be a “tad” shorter in 2012 and legendary bassist Michael Anthony may be absent from this “classic” Van Halen lineup, only the successful result of 100% pure Hard Rock is in the 13 songs my ears and senses have consumed from A Different Kind Of Truth. I’m both ecstatic and impressed simultaneously by this band. My relief from the first several listens of A Different Kind Of Truth lies in the fact that this new Van Halen album is not a dud, that all four of these musicians took the “right road” and decided to keep their sound real and true. Van Halen didn’t have to reinvent themselves just due to it being 2012. By the way, this album ROCKS.
Now, if you’re looking for a return to 1984, you best keep looking. A Different Kind Of Truth is an album that fits in quite fittingly “somewhere” within the first four Van Halen releases… with Diver Down looking over this album’s shoulder. Van Hagar? Certainly a fabulous and memorable era imbedded in my Rockin’ soul. Gary Cherone fronted Van Halen? A unique moment in Van Halen history that (in my Metal opinion) receives too often unwarranted and negative commentary. It’s now 2012 and this is Classic Van Halen. The Return of Van Halen. Diamond Dave fronted Van Halen. The world just became a “tad” brighter for me, as I wrote that preceding line.

’77 – This Hard Rock band ’77 is from Barcelona Spain and man are they… Old School! The second studio album from ’77, High Decibels, is slated for a February 28th release on Listenable Records. This is an album of raw, riff infested and: “share a case o’ beer with your Metal buddy” style of Hard Rock. This is also Hard Rock to crank up in the car, on a long weekend cruise with your chick by your side. Blue collar Hard Rock never sounded so damn fun as ’77 does on High Decibels!
The incredible resemblance that Armand Valeta has vocally to the late Bon Scott is unreal. Musically ’77 does overflow with 70’s AC/DC sound, vibe and feel. With all the AC/DC comparisons aside, what ’77 does very well is they play their Hard Rock with credible passion and they write original songs. The more I’ve listened to High Decibels, the more I hear a band that is fired-up about Rock ‘N Roll and it’s a fever they can easily spread to Rockaholics worldwide like myself.
I am impressed by the old school Hard Rock allegiance that ’77 bestows in their brand of Hard Rock. Too often a band like this will get mocked for being a “rip-off” or dated. My response would be: It’s 77’s style of Rock ‘N Roll that’s spilling from their Rockin’ souls. Metal be thy name. My two favorite songs on High Decibels are: Backdoor Man and Since You’ve Been Gone. I highly dig the bluesy side of ’77’s Hard Rock! Bad-ass Classic Rock is here to stay with ’77 too.
High Decibels is an album where once you hit “play” that’s it. You can’t stop it until it’s over! It’s like a cool party that just got started… why would you want to end a good thing? If you’re a Hard Rock fan from any generation, you should mark ’77 down and make certain to add High Decibels to your “must need” list of good-times and ass kickin’ Rock ‘N Roll albums. Everyone’s album collection deserves a solid kick-in-the-ass and ’77 shall bring it.
MOLLO / MARTIN – Dario Mollo (guitarist & producer) has teamed up with Tony Martin (vocalist) for another new album of Melodic Hard Rock and Heavy Metal songs titled: The Third Cage. This album has ten songs of musical substance, fusing both elements of Hard Rock and Heavy Metal in seamless and memorable fashion.
This is a new release from Mollo / Martin that should not be overlooked. A complete album of songs it is and I can’t hold back by calling The Third Cage as one of the best of Hard Rock and Heavy Metal albums for 2012. The Third Cage will be releasing on January 20, via Frontiers Records.
Below are 5 factors I’m spotlighting as to why The Third Cage is indeed… one of the best in album releases during this new year:
Factor #1:Dario Mollo. This Italian musician is simply wonderful to take in on guitar. You’re not getting anything watered down from Dario, just one stupendous guitarist that knows how to balance the melodic with the heavy. Dario’s solo’s are a treat to my ears and I applaud his precision in keeping each song interesting as hell. You must hear Dario Mollo on guitar to truly understand my appreciation for his skills.
Factor #2:Tony Martin. Yes, Tony is a former vocalist for Black Sabbath and one of the unsung hero’s of Heavy Metal’s history. Whatever Tony has done to keep his vocals in top form after all these years should be bottled up and sold to the highest bidder. Clarity is always key with Tony and his melodic tones resonate all that is golden about a revered era of Traditional Heavy Metal.
Factor #3: Dario exhibits his diversity as a guitarist by adding plenty of Funky licks in Can’t Stay Here. The end result is some Heavy Funk that Tony Martin sings along to brilliantly. This song is a winner and made for a pleasant surprise for me on this album.
Factor #4: The keyboards. The added layer of sound that the keyboards gives to The Third Cage is a keynecessity to establishing the feel and vibe of these songs. War Dance is elevated to the stratosphere due to them keys.
Factor #5: Seasoned talent doesn’t always equate to an excellent album of songs, only this seasoned crop of musicians have proven to my ears there was grand chemistry that swirled amongst them, during the writing and recording process. Not one song sounds like it was “slapped together”, instead, attention to detail and a continuity of quality flows from each song.

RELENTLESS– Any dictionary will reveal the meaning of Relentless for you as: that does not relent; unyieldingly severe, strict, or harsh; unrelenting: a relentless enemy. This is a strong word. In my opinion, relentless can make for a tough as nails Hard Rock or Heavy Metal album title. Comedians along with musicians and bands from other music genres have used relentless as an album title, only it does not come across as riveting or true to me outside of Heavy Music.
As I went deeper into researching relentless as an album title, I found too numerous examples to mention and/or list. If I did list all the albums I’ve found with the title of relentless, then that would be rather relentless on my part. What I have learned is relentless is easily one of the most popular album titles ever to be used! Metal be thy name! Is this a bad or good thing? Is relentless overused on album titles? I guess I’ll leave the answer for you to ponder, for I don’t want to pass on any relentless judgement on the popularity of this word.
Alright, I will add, before a comedian, musician or band uses such a forceful word such as relentless, they should seriously consider it’s true definition and make certain if “fits” with their persona and/or album content.
Here are 14 albums (including the Jackyl cover on top of post) that caught my attention while compiling this relentless album title research:
Bill Hicks – Relentless (1992)
This cover photo just doesn’t go with the definition of relentless. Nope.
Sharel Cassity – Relentless (2009)
Maybe Sharel is relentless with her saxophone playing? I just don’t know. I’ve never checked out her music… now I’m curious.
MORTIFICATION – Relentless (2003)
Relentless goes just fine here. These dudes are Christian Metal too. Long Live Mortification.
Jason Aldean – Relentless (2007)
Jason looks too subdued here to be connected to relentless at all.
PENTAGRAM – Relentless (1985)
Yup. Relentless fits quite well on this cover. Doom Metal Legends. Long Live PENTAGRAM.
Natalie Grant – Relentless (2008)
Look at the PENTAGRAM album cover, then look at this Natalie Grant cover. Does relentless have multiple definitions that I’m now aware of?
YNGWIE MALMSTEEN – Relentless (2010)
Yes. Yngwie Malmsteen has been considered by many to be a relentless axe slinger. Long Live Yngwie Malmsteen.
Misty Edwards – Relentless (2008)
A Christian Music vocalist, Misty Edwards digs this title too. The album cover looks Heavy Metal to me though.
Walter Trout and the Radicals – Relentless (2003)
Walter Trout and the Radicals can have an album title of Relentless. It’s all good.
Here are three bands that actually take the word relentless and give it an F’n boost in their album titles. These three bands can get away with it too. You’ll see what I mean…
Asking Alexandria – Reckless & Relentless (2011)
Long Live Asking Alexandria.
Children Of Bodom – Relentless Reckless Forever (2011)
Long Live Children Of Bodom.
Death Angel – Relentless Retribution (2010)
Long Live Death Angel.
Lastly, here is a 1993 Pet Shop Boys album that goes by the title: Very. However, look a little closer at this album cover and you will see Relentless in the album title! It’s probably the one and only “hidden relentless” in the history of album cover titles! Whoa!
This concludes the list of Relentless Album Titles. As you witnessed, this popular word needs to be applied where it truly belongs. In conclusion, relentless isn’t just any word that can be slapped onto any album cover.
