Metal Odyssey’s Top Ten Rock Albums Of 2011

Posted in classic rock, classic rock albums, Hard Rock, Music, rock albums, rock and roll, rock bands, rock guitarists, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , , , , on December 25, 2011 by Metal Odyssey

Top Ten Rock Albums Of 2011 – This Top Ten Rock Album list comprises various genres, the likes of: Blues, Alternative, Rockabilly, Acoustic, New Wave, some shades of Hard Rock and of course, Rock itself. Isn’t Rock a grand blanket term for such incredible music diversity? I love Rock. Without Rock, there wouldn’t have been Heavy Metal.

If you are counting, there are actually thirteen Rock albums in this Top Ten list. Admittedly, compiling a “Top Ten” of anything is grueling for me, therefore the two “ties” below are as honest as I could ever possibly be, without pulling what hair I have left off of my head. Furthermore, I couldn’t resist adding Jeff Beck – Rock ‘n’ Roll Party/Honoring Les Paul as an “Honorable Mention”. It’s a good times, roots of Rock ‘n’ Roll listen, one that I’ve enjoyed time and again.

I chose the following Rock albums due to how memorable, fun and interesting they came across to my senses. The quality of Rock contained in these following albums, I simply revere. There are some elite musicians and bands on this list for certain. They all have proven to me just how diverse Rock ‘N Roll really is, with their respective albums. These are the Rock albums that I gravitated to and became inspired by most often during 2011. I highly recommend you check ’em out, if you haven’t already.

THE TREWS – HOPE & RUIN

(Bumstead Productions Ltd.)

Hope & Ruin took me by surprise in 2011. THE TREWS captured a Rockin’ vibe that made my mood soar anytime I listened to this album. Melodic songs that glisten lyrically and musically, Hope & Ruin can easily become someone’s Rockin’ companion. THE TREWS are that Rock band you need to know about. This band defies the illogical American Rock mainstream press, proving that exquisite and blue-collar Rock music does exist in places other than Billboard or Rolling Stone magazine.

When I listen to Hope & Ruin, I’m not hearing a Rock band that is out to prove themselves. I’m instead hearing a Rock band that created a complete album of songs, which I imagine is straight from their Rock ‘N Roll hearts.

The tracklist reads as follows:

There is an enormous tension between different religions and cultures, wars, natural disasters and a huge financial crisis, which is getting out of control. More than ever we will need each other to overcome these problems. As we are all connected; the universe, earth, nature, animals and human beings, this period in time will be the prelude to the end for those who still don’t want to, or simply won’t see it. A REQUIEM FOR THE INDIFFERENT but also a possibility for a new beginning with great new chances!”

Epica will present this album to the public on the 16th of March 2012, in 013, Tilburg (NL) tickets are still available but are going out fast!

Keep an eye on the official Epica website and social media for regular updates on REQUIEM FOR THE INDIFFERENT!!

ORANGE GOBLIN – ‘A Eulogy For The Damned’: This Album Is Mandatory Metal, My Metal Brethren

Posted in Heavy Metal, heavy metal albums, heavy metal news, metal music, Music, rock music, rock music news, stoner metal with tags , , , , , , on December 24, 2011 by Metal Odyssey

ORANGE GOBLIN – They’re back. Orange Goblin. On February 14, 2012, the seventh studio album from one of Britain’s finest Metal bands of the 20th and 21st Centuries will be released on Candlelight Records. Their new album A Eulogy For The Damned is such an amazing listen from front to back, that I’ve had to throw cold water on my face to make certain I’m not imagining it all. Seriously. From the album’s rip-it-up opener of Red Tide Rising, to the closer A Eulogy To The Damned, there is absolutely not one boring micro-second to hear on this album.

Is this new Orange Goblin album perfect? Damn it’s near close to Metal perfection as you can get. I cannot get enough of what I’m hearing on A Eulogy For The Damned. Orange Goblin reveals their inner linings of Stoner meets Classic Hard Rock vibes, courtesy of countless riffs and guitar parts, with bass and drums resonating all great things about exhilarating rhythm and grooves… and this is still Metal. Orange Goblin takes their Metal sound to a heightened level of awe, on such tracks as Stand For Something and Save Me From Myself, with a combination of retrospective Rockin’ thunder and unbridled Hard and Heavy relevance.

A Eulogy For The Damned epitomizes just how a Metal album can come across and sound, when a band doesn’t over-indulge in their own creativity or skills. This is a Metal album, only it’s Metal that doesn’t trip over its own feet. Even repetition on the closing track A Eulogy To The Damned is music genius within this song’s structure. I honestly found myself disappointed that this album has ten songs. Then again, these ten songs make the listening experience so befittingly special. Maybe other bands can learn a lesson here from Orange Goblin and keep their filler tracks where they belong… in a box labeled “work in progress”.

The vocals of Ben Ward and total musicianship of this band roars with authority, as an undeniable sound and feel of keeping it real is a non-stop listening experience on this album. If it’s your goal to buy amazing Metal in 2012, you can kick-start this goal into reality by buying A Eulogy For The Damned. Of course Orange Goblin fans and Metal fans will dive right into this new album, yet Stoner, Hard Rock and even Classic Rock fans are certain to find numerous slices of A Eulogy For The Damned quite damn appealing.

ORANGE GOBLIN:

Ben Ward – vocals

Joe Hoare – guitar

Martyn Millard – bass

Chris Turner – drums

Red Tide Rising

Stand For Something

Acid Trial

Save Me From Myself

Band Terrorizes National Year-End Lists!

Goregrind legends EXHUMED played their first U.S. show in over six years at the 2011 edition of the Maryland Deathfest and thanks to NPR, the set, in all its uncensored glory, is available for your consumption at THIS LOCATION.

EXHUMED released their All Guts, No Glory full-length earlier this year via Relapse Records. The record continues to reap critical acclaim from fans and critics nationally and has left it’s grisly mark on multiple Year End lists including Decibel, Pitchfork, NPR.org, MetalSucks and Skulls N Bones!

Said vocalist/guitarist menace Matt Harvey: “2011 has been a great year for the band. We’ve had a killer time scraping off the rust on the gore metal machine and getting back on the road and partying with necromaniacs all over the place. It’s amazing how many people have enjoyed our racket and have actually said nice things about our record – sometimes even in public! We have a lot of shit planned for next year and we’re chomping at the bit to continue subjecting the universe to more of our god awful noise! See you on the road…or at the bar. Play fast or die, dudes. Cheers!”

ELMSFIRE – Signs To Massacre Records

ELMSFIRE are from Düsseldorf, Germany and have existed since 1999, having hit the stage for the first time in 2002.

Fritz, the band’s bassist, describes their music as Melodic Heavy Metal, which is influenced by Thrash and Power Metal. The songs are mostly about situations and emotions they’ve experienced.

The band’s name is based on the St. Elmo’s Fire, which is a weather phenomenon. The name ELMSFIRE represents the band, which is also full of energy.

Playing countless gigs and dealing with several lineup changes, ELMSFIRE have already recorded two demos and an EP.

“Thieves Of The Sun”, the first full-length album of ELMSFIRE, is going to be released on February 24, 2012!

Metal Odyssey’s Top Ten Hard Rock Albums Of 2011

Posted in classic rock, classic rock bands, Hard Rock, hard rock albums, Music, music videos, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , , , on December 22, 2011 by Metal Odyssey

Top Ten Hard Rock Albums Of 2011 – I have listened to many Hard Rock albums released during 2011. There seems to be quite a few Hard Rock albums that are of standout quality, this past year for me. With that said, my “Top Ten Hard Rock Albums Of 2011” simply cannot represent the totality of Hard Rockin’ thrills I’ve experienced with my ears these past 12 months.

What my Top Ten list does represent are the Hard Rock albums I turned to most often to play… LOUD! I lean towards the “complete” album of songs, an album that goes further than just 4 or 5 great tracks. I gravitate towards the Hard Rock albums that psyched-me-out and made me feel very damn good inside. These are the Hard Rock albums that made a difference to me. A personal list it is and hopefully there are a few here you may agree with. Thank you for visiting Metal Odyssey in 2011 and supporting Rock ‘N Roll! Happy Holidays, Rock Steady and Happy New Year to all!

MR. BIG – WHAT IF…

(Frontiers Records)

Yes, the return of MR. BIG left a big Hard Rockin’ impression on my ears. If ever there was an album that grew on me, over the course of time, then said album is What If… and it has served me right. Eric Martin’s vocals have never sounded better. Sound cliche? Not in my mind. On What If… Billy Sheehan (bass), Paul Gilbert (guitar) and Pat Torpey (drums) all sound as if there was never a recording break of ten years. Their seventh studio album may just be their best Hard Rock creation, in my honest opinion.

My favorite song from What If… is Undertow. Check out the music video of MR. BIG below, hopefully you’ll enjoy Undertow as much as I do!

THANK YOU to all of the bands above and Long Live Hard Rock!

MINISTRY – Signs Worldwide Deal With AFM Records

Posted in Heavy Metal, heavy metal news, industrial metal, industrial rock, metal music, Music, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , , on December 21, 2011 by Metal Odyssey

AFM Records is proud to announce the worldwide signing of Industrial veterans MINISTRY, one of the most innovative and legendary bands of our time. AFM will release MINISTRY‘s highly anticipated comeback album Relapse in March. Prior to the album, MINISTRY will release a digital single, entitled “99%” on December 23rd, 2011 via the band’s iTunes store.

Currently, MINISTRY mastermind Al Jourgensen is finalizing the last mixes on the new material. Commented Jourgensen on the signing: “Our 13th Planet Record releases have been distributed in Europe via AFM through our partner Soulfood Music in Germany for several years now, and we have established a solid business relationship, so it made perfect sense to take the next step and have AFM Records come on board and be involved with the new Ministry release for worldwide and digital distribution. I’m pretty psyched about the collaboration, based on the response and enthusiasm I’ve received from AFM so far…”

Stay tuned for further info on the upcoming album, tour updates and more on MINISTRY heavily throughout 2012.

GLORIOR BELLI: Live Footage From Messe des Morts Festival Posted

Posted in Black Metal, black metal videos, Extreme Metal, Heavy Metal, heavy metal news, metal music, Music, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , , on December 21, 2011 by Metal Odyssey

Last month, French Black Metal enigmas GLORIOR BELLI made their first ever North American appearance at Montreal’s Messe des Morts festival. The ceremony took place at Coop Katacombes on November 25 and 26 and included live rituals from some of black metal’s most esteemed creators.

Commented vocalist/guitarist Julien of the experience: “Thanks to [fest organizer] Martin [Marcotte; Sepulchral Productions] and the rest of the crew, we had the chance to play in front of an enthusiastic audience in Montréal for the first edition of Messe des Morts festival and share the stage with great local acts as well as international bands such as Absu, Inquisition and Angantyr. It sure does feel different than in Europe, for there is a definite hunger for our art and it’s an actual pleasure to bring the fire that we craft in good old Europe to the new continent and share it with the few, the extraordinary.”

Check out live footage of the band at THIS LOCATION.

GLORIOR BELLI released their fourth full-length, The Great Southern Darkness, earlier this Fall via Metal Blade Records which continues to reap critical adoration from fans and critics alike.

Scythia – Folk Metal Band Releases Xmas Song: “…Of Santa”

Posted in christmas, christmas rock songs, christmas songs, folk metal, Heavy Metal, heavy metal news, metal music, Music, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , , , on December 20, 2011 by Metal Odyssey

Folk Metal clan Scythia have released a holiday tune for fans called “…Of Santa”, which is now streaming on youtube at the following link here and can also be purchased at bandcamp here.

“Christmas has all the right elements of Folk Metal: it’s dark and wintry, it involves magic, and there’s plenty of ale and mead. This year, we figured it was time to pay homage to the season by creating our very own Scythian Christmas tale.” commented vocalist / guitarist Dave Khan.

In addition the 2011 year coming to an end, Scythia have been mentioned on a few Top 2011 lists for this year’s sophomore release “…Of Exile”.

Decibel Magazine named Scythia’s “Oboe of Death” the #2 of Top 5 Non-Metal Instruments on a 2011 Album. Check it out on pg #54 of Issue #87 Jan 2012.

So what is Scythia?

Taking its name from vocalist/guitarist Dave Khan’s infatuation with a painting of Nordic/Russian warriors riding bears while brandishing swords, Scythia not only “gives the painting musical significance,” but it is also “the name of an ancient empire spanning from the Caucasus through Russia, and even into eastern Scandinavia. The melodies used in our music have a very ancient, sometimes medieval sound, so I wanted to attribute them to an ancient civilization,” says Khan.

In 2010, Scythia released its debut, “…Of War” (originally with violin) which was produced by Shaun Thingvold who has engineered on projects with SYL, Fear Factory, Darkest Hour and many more. Now, following some line-up changes, Scythia have released their second album “…Of Exile”, again produced by Shaun Thingvold September 23, 2011.

SCORPIONS ‘COMEBLACK’ – Heavy Metal Legends Do It Their Way, On Album Of Covers & Re-Recordings

Posted in classic rock, cover songs, Heavy Metal, heavy metal albums, heavy metal news, metal music, Music, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , , , , on December 20, 2011 by Metal Odyssey

SCORPIONS COMEBLACK – The Scorpions latest CD release, Comeblack, is a combination of  seven re-recorded classics from their legendary catalog of albums along with six Classic Rock cover songs. I realize there are fans who don’t applaud when a band makes an album of cover songs and I understand that. Personally, I enjoy hearing a band covering other band’s songs. I really am thrilled with Comeblack for more than half of this album is, essentially, the Scorpions covering themselves!

In my opinion, some of the re-recorded songs the Scorpions did for Comeblack are actually better than their own originals. I point to the first three songs on Comeblack to state my point: Rhythm Of Love, No One Like You and The Zoo. All three songs are outstanding Scorpions originals, yet on Comeblack each of these mentioned songs has a harder and edgier zeal to them, which I really dig, especially on one of my all-time favorites The Zoo. The harder energy on these three cover songs are so good and breathe some new life into them.

Unfortunately, I can’t state the same for the new versions of Rock You Like A Hurricane and Winds Of Change. I feel the original versions are superior to their re-recorded selves on Comeblack. Then again, these two songs are this iconic band’s biggest hits, so I imagine it would be almost impossible to improve on them. Blackout and Still Loving You are done well and both are very solid re-recordings. If there is one thing I would have done differently on this half of Comeblack, I would have included some of their lesser-known hits like Big City Nights, Alien Nation and In Trance and re-recorded them with the same updated heaviness.

Now for the cover songs. First of all, I find this a very interesting collection of songs to cover. For example, I was never a big fan of the song Tainted Love by the New Wave/Post-Punk band Soft Cell. Actually, I find it a very annoying song. Therefore, even before I heard this cover version by the Scorpions I was preparing to be disappointed. Man, was I surprised! The Scorpions came up huge here. What a terrific job the Scorpions did in creating what I would call a wuss of a song and transforming it into Metal!

Children of The Revolution and Tin Soldier are solidly done. Across The Universe is probably my biggest complaint, in terms of song selection for Comeblack. I can’t say I’m a big fan of this song. All Day And All Of The Night packs a good and Hard Rockin’ punch that I believe The Kinks would praise.

This brings me to the final song. The Scorpions end Comeblack with grand style! What do you get when you combine Klaus Meine, Metal guitar riffs by guitar legends Rudolf Schenker and Matthias Jabs and a song written by The Rolling Stones? This is Scott Coverdale’s “Song Of The Year”: Ruby Tuesday. I can’t begin to tell you, just how much I love this cover version of Ruby Tuesday. After listening to this song over and over again, I’ve come to the conclusion that Ruby Tuesday was meant to be a Metal song and we’ve been delivered just that… 40 years later.

* Scorpions – Comeblack was released in November of 2011 on Sony Music.

EXHUMED: California Goregrind Legends Announce First Ever Brazilian Dates

Posted in Extreme Metal, gore metal, goregrind, Heavy Metal, heavy metal news, metal music, Music, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , , , , on December 19, 2011 by Metal Odyssey

Goregrind overlords EXHUMED are pleased to announce four Brazilian shows this Winter with Aborted. This will mark the band’s first time ever in the country. The short but epic run will commence on February 17, 2012 and hit Belo Horizonte, São Paulo, Curitiba and Porto Alegre.

Comments vocalist/guitarist Matt Harvey: “We are beyond psyched to head to Brazil for the first time. We’ve been getting letters and emails from folks down there for years and it is going to be awesome to finally be able to play for those maniacs south of the equator. I know they’re ready for some serious gore fucking Metal and we can’t wait to deliver it to them!”

EXHUMED w/ Aborted

2/17/2012 Music Hall – Belo Horizonte, MG

2/18/2012 Hangar 110 – São Paulo, SP

2/19/2012 Hangar Bar – Curitiba, PR

2/20/2012 Bar Opinião – Porto Alegre, RS

EXHUMED will be touring in support of All Guts, No Glory, issued earlier this year via Relapse Records. The band’s first new record in almost eight years offers up 11 choice cuts of grinding death metal and has turned up on multiple Year End lists including Decibel, Pitchfork, NPR.org, MetalSucks and Skulls N Bones! Metal Underground praised the release saying:  “EXHUMED are back, hungry, vicious, and unrelenting,” while Decibel Magazine noted: “Everything seems more fluid and powerful, though as vicious as it all is, the focus remains on the composition and how it smacks the listener between the eyes.” Revolver agreed: “… fans of dripping blood, gaping autopsies, and ravenous zombies will absolutely adore this record.”

Added Aborted: “EXHUMED has not only strongly persisted over the last 20 years, but has also managed to simultaneously keep their musical integrity and brutal, gore-filled lyrics fully intact.

Jingle All The Way (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack) – A Christmas CD Recommendation

Posted in christmas, christmas rock albums, christmas songs, holidays, movie soundtracks, movies, Music, rock and roll, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , , , , , on December 19, 2011 by Metal Odyssey

Jingle All The Way – Last Friday I patrolled the CD aisles at my local Super Walmart and found: Jingle All The Way (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack). I bought it for a very decent price of $5 (U.S.). Super Walmart seems to have hundreds of very cool CD’s for sale at the $5 price point. There may even be more than hundreds, there’s that many at this particular location.

I never knew this soundtrack existed. Heck, I’m not a Christmas motion picture soundtrack expert! I am an expert at eating Lay’s potato chips lately though and that has to stop. Um, yeah. The front cover to this CD shows the two stars of Jingle All The Way: Arnold Schwarzenegger and Sinbad. Both the movie and CD was released back in November of 1996.

This CD was released on TVT Soundtrax. This movie, (in case you haven’t seen it), is an action-comedy, released by 20th Century Fox. I’ve always enjoyed catching this movie when it airs on one of the 150,777 cable networks out there. I’ve always appreciated the funny side of “The Governator” too. The dude just makes me laugh when he does comedy. Sinbad is a comedy legend, hands down.

The Brian Seitzer Orchestra is featured with 4 songs. The Brian Seitzer Orchestra is very cool in Stone’s world, by the way. Brian Seitzer should be inducted into The Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame too, only we all know how that “institution” goes. Um, yeah. My favorite all-time Christmas song is featured on Jingle All The Way as well: Chuck Berry – Run Rudolph Run. Chuck Berry is an ultra Rock ‘N Roll icon. ‘Nuff said.

The ever popular Jingle Bell Rock by Bobby Helms and The Most Wonderful Time Of The Year by Johnny Mathis are among the 12 songs. If I had to count the number of times I’ve heard this Johnny Mathis Christmas classic, while I’ve been shopping during the holiday season, my guesstimate would be: 1,650,444 times. Give or take about 55,000. I still kinda dig the song too. Metal be thy name.

If you dig Christmas movie soundtracks, love Christmas songs or need to have every CD that features Sinbad on its front cover, then Jingle All The Way is a semi-mandatory recommendation from Stone.

Alright. Since some of you are already asking, here is the complete track list for Jingle All The Way:
