4 simple & silly reasons why I am an “old school” Metalhead.

8214121This is rather silly at best, although there is much proof out there as to why older Metalheads  are called “old school”. These 4 reasons for being an old school Metalhead came to my mind, I just had to jot them down for the whole world to read. I am guilty of all 4 too.

1. Lately, when the ages of Ozzy Osbourne, Rob Halford or Alice Cooper (or any Metal superstar of that generation) are brought up in conversation, I am so quick to quip; “oh, they look great, that’s not a bad age man, that’s young man, that’s young.”

2. I remember being psyched, watching Blue Oyster Cult appear on The Merv Griffin Show, playing “Burning For You” and promoting their “Fire of Unknown Origin” album. After that show aired, I forever thought of Merv Griffin as a really cool dude.

3. I find myself always stopping to “leaf” through the Pop Culture posters at the major retail stores, thinking I will find a Kiss, Judas Priest or Charlie’s Angels poster. I then realize what I am doing and proceed to walk away.

4. I am still very proud that I belonged to the Kiss Army.

Granted, there are millions of reasons to be labeled an old school Metalhead, it’s the funny reasons that really get to me.

OVER KILL – RELIX IV

70319722“Here it is, the one song you will need to sing along to every time you listen to “Relix IV”…. “Old School”. This song just has to be the official anthem of Over Kill and all of us older, or should I say, veteran Metalheads. Man, is this song cool! It is, believe it or not, Punk driven musically, the vocals and backing vocals are proof of this. “Within Your Eyes”, “Bats In The Belfry”, “Pound of Flesh” and “Keeper” will definitely satisfy your Thrash appetite. “Keeper” is another great tune to shout along to, trust me. I definitely will say this is the most fun Over Kill album ever, being that “Old School” and “Keeper” exist on it. You still will receive, without question, the unrelenting Thrash, dark lyrics, dark mood throughout “Relix IV”. Not one bad tune to be found here. This is once again, another must own for all Over Kill and all Thrash Metal fans worldwide. Thank you Bobby Blitz and D.D. Verni for making “Relix IV”

THIN LIZZY – THUNDER AND LIGHTNING

12046797Thunder and Lightning is a Thin Lizzy Hard Rockin’ and Heavy Hittin’ prize. Released in 1983, this is Old School Heavy Metal that is stupendous with every aspect of it’s music. John Sykes and Scott Gorham on guitars are both a sensational listen. The three songs of Cold Sweat, Someday She Is Going To Hit Back and Baby Please Don’t are abundantly impressive to my Rockin’ hungry ears. In my Metal opinion, the purchase of this album is worth it for these three songs alone. With that said, this entire album is vintage Heavy Metal that should be revisited and celebrated.

Thunder and Lightning for me, is one of those exemplary albums that is worthy of being labeled: a Heavy Metal hidden treasure. The Holy War is a standout song for my Metal senses, it’s not that it just Rocks, the lyrics are intelligent, the guitar solo is breathtaking and the rhythm section comes at you with a continuous cool groove.

The late Phil Lynott is simply excellent on vocals and bass, a bona-fide Rock Legend is he. Phil’s vocals I’ve always found to be contagiously memorable and unique. Bad Habits and Heart Attack are two very catchy, melodious and hooky songs that end this great album, with the guitar riffs and leads on these two songs leaving a lasting impression. Overall, in my Metal opinion, this is as sound, talent fused and classic of a Heavy Metal album as you can ask for. Thunder and Lightning truly delivers on it’s title.

Any Hard Rock, Classic Rock or Heavy Metal fan should appreciate what Thin Lizzy created here with Thunder and Lightning, I without question do. Don’t let your Hard Rock or Heavy Metal collection of music be without this classic from Thin Lizzy. Thunder and Lightning is an album that should surprise new fans who’ve never been exposed to Thin Lizzy before. Lifelong fans of Thin Lizzy that read this are most likely (and hopefully) nodding in approving agreement with me. Old School RocksMetal be thy name.

LONG LIVE THE ROCKIN’ LEGACY OF THIN LIZZY.

Rest In Peace, Phil Lynott.

JUDAS PRIEST – STAINED CLASS

Posted in Heavy Metal, Metal, Music with tags , on March 17, 2009 by Metal Odyssey

4350767“Originally released in 1978, Judas Priest “Stained Class” is bursting out at the seams with what I regard as groundbreaking Heavy Metal that helped define what Metal is today. I, personally feel, that “Exciter” is a song that projects a Thrash Metal speed and vibe. “Better By You, Better Than Me” is a Heavy Metal song that has an opening riff so memorable, so catchy, with it’s repeated use throughout, single handedly electrifies this tune. “Better By You, Better Than Me” is loaded down with a heavy bass groove, the tapered down pace of this song makes it so hot and heavy. The bonus tracks are terrific, with the live version of “Better By You, Better Than Me” sounding great and a bit raw, which I feel enhances the song. “Fire Burns Below” is a slow, trudging, Heavy Metal treat to my ears! I really find this song to be a great example of the sound Judas Priest would eventually grasp onto with their albums of the 1980’s. “Fire Burns Below” is fused together with repetitive drum beats, layered over by electric guitar leads and very clean, very sharp acoustic guitar leads. “Stained Class” in my opinion, is a Heavy Metal album ahead of it’s time, a Judas Priest classic for me. Every song on this album, for me, is as great as Heavy Metal gets. I highly recommend “Stained Class”, a must own for those who love all things Metal!

The liner notes are awesome, with 8 pages of complete lyrics, 3 band photos of Judas Priest, credits, and a 1 page review & reflection on “Stained Class” written by Judas Priest. Judas Priest, on “Stained Class”: Rob Halford on lead vocals, Glenn Tipton on guitar, K.K. Downing on guitar, Ian Hill on bass and Les Binks on drums.”

METAL CHURCH – 1985 ALBUM REVIEWED

Posted in Metal, Music, Thrash Metal with tags , on March 17, 2009 by Metal Odyssey

524846“The first release from Metal Church is extremely fast with the attitude of a hungry band of musicians braced for Metal stardom. Released in 1985, “Metal Church” is an old school Thrash & Metal album that belongs in every single Metal fans collection, no question about it. All 9 songs are structured, written and performed to the highest of Metal standards. The late David Wayne on vocals, makes the songs sound dark and gives each song a vintage Metal bite. The intro to “Beyond the Black” is chilling, with a doomsday rhetoric and atmosphere that grabs your attention instantly. The guitar and bass on the song “Metal Church” sounds like it is leading you down a path of horror, now this is what Metal is supposed to accomplish! “Hitman” is super heavy and thrashes across the board. “Gods of Wrath” is the longest song, at over six and a half minutes, yet you will wish it would continue on! The cover of Deep Purple’s “Highway Star” is done so well here it is jaw dropping. Kurt Vanderhoof on guitar, the Heavy Metal hero who still runs the show for Metal Church to this day, is flawless on this album. The rest of the lineup for this debut album by Metal Church is Kirk Arrington on drums & percussion, Craig Wells on guitars and Duke Erickson on bass. A debut Metal Church album that is so intense for its time, so riveting and exact with its delivery of Thrash and Metal, it belongs at the top of the list of all time Metal albums. I feel this album is absolutely relevant to the Metal that is currently released today, it is an album like “Metal Church” that paved the way for today’s Heavy Metal genres.”

Heavy Metal – album cover art that Rocks!

67849371Besides the METAL music itself, one really cool and important reason that drew me into buying so many albums/CD’s over the years, was the album artwork. To this day, It is still a METAL rush to see that the CD I want/need has great artwork on the front cover. In my opinion, it is a METAL bonus to have spooky, thrilling or cutting edge art to associate my favorite bands with. Again, I will attest that it is the METAL music that matters the most, I would still buy a new release from Amon Amarth even if the cover of the CD was a plain gray color. Here is a list of what I feel are some of the best METAL album/CD covers I have seen over the years. This list is in no particular order, plus there are hundreds, perhaps thousands more covers that are out there that are not on this list. Also, art appreciation is a matter of preference, what I feel is a cool or super spooky METAL album/CD cover may not appeal to you at all. Maybe this list will spark interest in having you look up some of these albums/CD’s if you have never seen some of them before. Here’s a sample:

* NAZARETH – “No Mean City”

* BLACK SABBATH – “Black Sabbath”

* IRON MAIDEN –  “Live After Death” – (all their covers, really)

* KING DIAMOND – “Abigail”

* YNGWIE MALMSTEEN – “Trilogy”

* MOTORHEAD – “Another Perfect Day”, “Bomber”

* DANZIG – “Thrall Demonsweat Live”

* QUEEN – “News of the World”

* AMON AMARTH – “Twilight of the Thundergod”

* DIO – “Master of the Moon”

* ICED EARTH – “The Horror Show”, “The Dark Saga”, (all their covers too)

* W.A.S.P. – “The Headless Children”

* GAMMARAY – “Land of the Free II”

* WARLOCK – “Triumph and Agony”

* HELLOWEEN – “Gambling With the Devil” & “Walls of Jericho”, “The Dark Ride”

* SLAYER – “Reign In Blood”

* MANOWAR – “Warriors of the World”

* ARMORED SAINT – “Raising Fear”

* LYNCH MOB – “Wicked Sensation”

* EXODUS – “Shovel Headed Kill Machine”, “Tempo of the Damned”

* MISFITS – “Earth A.D.”

* GORGEOUS FRANKENSTEIN – “Gorgeous Frankenstein”

Gorgeous Frankenstein

I could go on and on here, the main idea is that over the decades, Heavy Metal and all of the glorious METAL genres have had, hands down, the greatest album/CD artwork around. This is my opinion of course. It just seems to me, that METAL goes beyond the music at times, METAL art is well documented as a history, for these and untold amounts of other album/CD covers are proof of that. I am an old school Metalhead, I still and always will, appreciate the artistic skill, labor and thought process involved behind the artwork that graces these METAL albums/CDs and liner notes.

My greatest Metal memory/experience of my life.

417524I believe the year was 1986, the month was January and METALLICA was touring in support of their great Thrash achievement, “Master of Puppets”. I was enamored by METALLICA, no, absorbed is more like it. Nothing else in the world meant more to me back then than this band, my girlfriend at that time was even second fiddle to them. So, when I heard that METALLICA was going to be doing a gig at the West Hartford Ballroom, in good old West Hartford Connecticut, I was there like a fly on cow dung. Make no mistake about it, no Connecticut winter storm was going to prevent me and my buddy from getting to this show! With road conditions being black ice and temperatures hovering around 20 degrees F., we arrived early enough to party in the lot and make it inside, just in time for METAL CHURCH. (I believe METAL CHURCH was supporting their release “The Dark”).

METAL CHURCH was cool, they were just what a Metalhead needed as a warm up to METALLICA. Once METALLICA hit the stage, it was like pandemonium. Check that, it was as if my life was forever altered, I now knew what it meant to feel euphoria, Thrash euphoria that is. Seeing James Hetfield, Kirk Hammett, Lars Ulrich and the late Cliff Burton, live, up close, wow. Please note, that this was really, really, up close, I was against the stage, only feet away! Look, I was being punished, bullied, and pounded by the frenzied fans in the pit, being pushed against the metal railing of the cheap fence against the stage. I LOVED IT. Cliff Burton, with his head & hair swirling around at hyper speed to the Thrash music, sent trails of sweat against my face. I LOVED IT. I took an elbow directly to my temple, from a fan very much bigger and stronger than I, it hurt like the dickens, I LOVED IT. I was then useless to the crowd in the mosh pit, being raised into the air and carried above the crowd, only to then be dropped onto the hard, beer soaked floor at the entrance to the bar. I LOVED IT.

As for the music itself, this was METALLICA! Hearing “For Whom The Bell Tolls” and “Battery” up close, live, in a small club setting by what would eventually become the world’s greatest Thrash band ever, well, I can never forget it. As for my buddy who came along with me that night, well, I lost him once METALLICA hit the stage. We later found each other in the parking lot, my buddy no longer had his winter jacket, nor had any shirt at all. We both were bruised up pretty good, tired and having trouble hearing. Upon starting up the car to leave this historic night behind us, we both agreed, WE LOVED IT.

3 valid reasons why the Sex Pistols belong in the Metal Family.

Posted in Metal, Punk rock with tags , on March 13, 2009 by Metal Odyssey

4111471Here is my opinion, as to why the legendary SEX PISTOLS belong in the METAL music family. There are 3 reasons that come to mind, (rather quickly at that), and all 3 reasons are factual. Here it goes, enjoy:

1. MEGADETH – has covered the SEX PISTOLS song “Anarchy In The U.K.” – found on the MEGADETH album “So Far, So Good, So What”. This Thrash METAL version is as intense as it can possibly get for covering this song. I swear I will never grow tired of the original version as well as this covered version. I might add that MEGADETH also did an amazing video for this tune as well back in the day, the video can be found on “Arsenal of Megadeth”.

2. MOTORHEAD – has covered the SEX PISTOLS song “God Save The Queen” – found on the MOTORHEAD album “We Are Motorhead”. MOTORHEAD did quite an admirable job at covering this classic song, I feel MOTORHEAD kept a ton of the Punk flavor musically on “God Save The Queen”.

3. ANTHRAX – has covered the SEX PISTOLS song “God Save The Queen” as well, like MOTORHEAD I feel ANTHRAX stayed true to the songs original Punk attitude and feel, musically. You can find the ANTHRAX cover version of “God Save The Queen” on their EP “Armed and Dangerous”.

With these 3 valid reasons being said, I still feel there is nothing better than the original version of any SEX PISTOLS song. The SEX PISTOLS were a very heavy Punk Rock band for certain, that cannot be disputed or denied. Of course Punk Rock is it’s own musical genre, yet the ferocity and straight in your face Punk attitude that the SEX PISTOLS delivered musically has obviously been embraced by some of the METAL world’s biggest names. This is for one solid good reason, as with any METAL genre, Punk Rock goes against the grain, rebels and stomps down on the status quo. I simply love the fact that Punk Rock and METAL music have crossed paths, I feel it will always continue.

I am also aware that there are countless SEX PISTOLS cover songs out there by numerous METAL and Hard Rock acts alike. I only mentioned these 3 cover songs as my valid reasons for the SEX PISTOLS being in the METAL family for they are my favorite cover tunes that have been done of this important Punk Rock band.

7505434It is so refreshing, extremely comforting, to know that there are factually dozens of Heavy Metal and Hard Rock bands that MATTER, bashing out their new releases and touring, since the 1970’s and in some instances, the late 1960’s!! So much for critics who cite “shelf life” of Heavy Metal. There are so many legendary Heavy Metal bands out there that are in their 3rd or 4th decade of championing the flag of Metal for all of us Metalheads. I hereby SALUTE the following list of legendary and historical bands that were/still are instrumental in shaping and defining the world of METAL music – as we know it and enjoy it today. I say THANK YOU to these bands! It is my opinion, that these bands are still around today for they are masters of their musical craft. It is my METAL opinion, that each and every one of these bands belongs in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. (some bands on this list already are there). I may miss some bands that should be on this list, however feel free to comment on those bands who belong on this HEAVY METAL & HARD ROCK list and they shall be added. The criteria I am using is: The band is Heavy Metal or Hard Rock * The band has been around since the late 1960’s or 1970’s and still are performing as a band or members are doing solo careers and/or recording new material – the band is current. Here is the list (in no particular order), enjoy:

DEEP PURPLE * MOTORHEAD * NAZARETH * BLACK SABBATH(HEAVEN AND HELL) * VAN HALEN * SAXON * AC/DC * TED NUGENT * MISFITS * RUSH * KROKUS * OZZY OSBOURNE * ZZ TOP * QUEEN & PAUL RODGERS * JUDAS PRIEST * CHEAP TRICK * IRON MAIDEN * ROBERT PLANT * GIRLSCHOOL * FOREIGNER * PAUL STANLEY * LITA FORD *  TOMMY SHAW * STYX * DENNIS DEYOUNG * GLENN DANZIG * TWISTED SISTER * WHITESNAKE * HEART * Y&T * SAMMY HAGAR * REO SPEEDWAGON * MICHAEL SCHENKER GROUP * UFO * SCORPIONS * UDO DIRKSCHNEIDER * PETER FRAMPTON * JOURNEY * GARY MOORE * ALICE COOPER * MOUNTAIN * KISS * URIAH HEEP *

To compile a complete list on this topic would be rather time consuming and laborious. The point I strive to make here is that as this list proves, quality musicianship coupled with Metal and/or Hard Rock will forever be in demand and last for decades. I have always been a strong believer that the Hard Rock of the late 1960’s and that of the 1970’s helped evolve Heavy Metal into the 1980’s and beyond. I simply cannot help but feel that bands such as Styx, Cheap Trick and Foreigner are relevant to the glorious world of Heavy Metal. I have been won over by these Hard Rock bands that stood the test of time. Listening to Cheap Trick’s “Gonna Raise Hell” from the “Dream Police” album is all the proof I need to hear in regards to any relevance to Heavy Metal. The same holds true for me in regards to “Renegade” by Styx and “Double Vision” by Foreigner. If these same songs were written today, would they have the same historical significance of “shaping Heavy Metal”? I believe the answer is no. These Hard Rock bands and their songs were born in the 1970’s, at a time when there were no multiple genres of Metal.

To make an analogy, in professional sports, athletes and fans are always reminded to be reverent of the past sports teams and athletes who helped shape and change their respective sport for the better. I definitely admire, respect and continue to listen to these bands that helped Metal evolve. By no means do I ignore or disregard the Heavy Metal and Hard Rock bands of yesteryear that for one reason or another disbanded and are no longer current. This article is a celebration of quality Heavy Metal and Hard Rock bands that have persevered, stood the test of time through the Disco era, the PMRC and their silly “parental advisory stickers”, the changing cultural and economic climates over the decades, with little or no help from the mainstream media and yet these bands still exist in 2009! I praise all of these bands and say to them all – WELL DONE!

Gus G. and Firewind – “The Premonition” is solid Power Metal!

Posted in Metal, Power Metal with tags , on March 11, 2009 by Metal Odyssey

8738468I highly recommend, to any METAL fan, especially Power Metal fans, FIREWIND. Gus G. is the lead guitarist and writes the music. Wow, what an incredible listen is Gus G.! Sure, Gus G. plays fast, yet there is so much melody in the music of Firewind, Gus G. is to me, one of those lead guitarists that makes his guitar actually sing! I always felt, that the trademark of a great lead guitarist is having established a signature sound, standing out from the crowd. Gus G. in my METAL opinion, does just that. Power Metal always and forever will grab my attentive METAL ears. Firewind delivers mightily on the keyboards, catchy hooks, flamboyant vocals, psyche you up chorus and speedy and melodic guitar with a thunderous rhythm section. If you are interested in Firewind, I suggest you check out “The Premonition”, (released in 2008), it is an essential Power Metal listen. “Mercenary Man” is one strong song, I find it so powerful that it is a Power Metal statement! Gus G. plays the daylights out of his guitar here and lead vocalist Apollo Papathanasio is for me outstanding. Every song on “The Premonition” sounds extremely incredible for me. Firewind does a cover of “Maniac”, (the 1980’s dance tune), making this song obviously heavier and profoundly better! “My Loneliness” is a power ballad that fits right into the mix of songs, lyrically this song stands out and musically glistens with all things Power Metal. I really feel no fan of Power Metal can serve themselves wrong by owning a copy of “The Premonition”.

“Music Choice” is a METAL friend!

Posted in Heavy Metal, Metal with tags , on March 4, 2009 by Metal Odyssey

382400“Music Choice” is a 24/7 selection of music channels, covering all genres of music. You get to hear one song after another, non stop. Now, the two “Music Choice” channels that matter the most are Arena Rock and METAL which is uncensored. Kudos to “Music Choice” for having the METAL uncensored! A million METAL high fives for that! The song selection is not controlled by the listener, yet it is cool, for the selection of METAL that is played is vast and varied. You get to see a few still photos of the band or artist that is currently being played. Plus at the bottom of the television screen are nifty facts and anecdotes about the respective band/artist currently playing. It does a Metalhead good to learn new facts and info about their favorite bands. “Music Choice” is so cool, for all I do is turn it on, (to METAL or Arena Rock of course), crank up the volume and go about my business. There are no commercials on “Music Choice” either!!!

The Arena Rock channel basically covers Heavy Metal, Glam/Hair Metal, Progressive Metal and Hard Rock bands and artists. The METAL (uncensored) channel covers the really good stuff: Death Metal, Black Metal, Extreme Metal, Thrash Metal, Metalcore and every other METAL genre that I have not mentioned here. You will not hear Van Halen on METAL (uncensored), yet you will hear Van Halen on Arena Rock. There are some bands that get played on both Arena Rock and METAL (uncensored): Iron Maiden, Ozzy and Judas Priest I have heard personally, on both. There may be many more that are played on both, that is cool with me.

In a METAL nutshell, I feel that “Music Choice” is a fabulous friend of METAL, I feel this is one of the bright spots currently happening for METAL fans. If you do not currently have “Music Choice” with your cable television package, I urge any and all METAL fans to call your cable provider and ask: “Where’s my METAL“?!

Metal CD’s I would want to be stranded with.

Posted in Heavy Metal, Metal, Power Metal with tags , on March 4, 2009 by Metal Odyssey

If, for some odd reason, a UFO abducted me and dropped me off onto another empty planet, and the space aliens allowed me to bring just 6 METAL CD’s with me, these would be the ones:

1. SLAYER – “Live Decade of Aggression”

2. MOTORHEAD – “No Remorse”

3. METAL CHURCH – “This Present Wasteland”

4. HELLOWEEN – “Gambling With The Devil”

5. DEEP PURPLE – “DEEPEST PURPLE”

6. BLACK SABBATH – “THE DIO YEARS”

8982265What makes this such a fun thought is this list can change by the day. I guess it always depends on your METAL mood, yet for now, this list of METAL CD’s would make my ears very comfy. Now, would it be fun to be abducted by a UFO, my answer is a solid no. I can easily be satisfied with this list of METAL CD’s while stranded on a remote tropical island. Now, some may ask – would you have the means to listen to these great METAL CD’s while being stranded? My answer is: Yes. I would have a lifetime supply of batteries waiting for me on the remote planet or tropical island where I am stranded. These batteries would power up my portable CD player, which also has headphones.

Nothing beats HEAVY METAL vinyl with treats inside!

Posted in Metal with tags , on March 3, 2009 by Metal Odyssey

3206863Years ago, (before compact discs were introduced), good old fashioned vinyl was the best way to go for my Heavy Metal purchases. Yes, I had the option of buying 8-track or cassette versions, yet for the money, vinyl always gave me the best return on my dollar. Kiss always seemed to have the coolest “extra’s” in their albums: Kiss “Dynasty” and Kiss “Unmasked” both had very cool posters inside, plus they were big enough to make quite the impression when hung on the wall! Kiss “Love Gun” had a nifty cardboard – die-cut love gun inside. (I wish I still had that one, why or how I lost it is beyond me). Kiss “Alive” and Kiss “Alive ll” had excellent liner notes that were basically album sized concert books. As you can see, you could never get these insane type of Metal extra’s inside a cassette or 8-track.

Albums years ago, well, they were made for the fan, the collector in mind. Cheap Trick “Live at Budokan” had album sized liner notes that were also a saddle-stitched book that provided quite the added enjoyment of owning that album. As for Iron Maiden, the incredible artwork of mascot Eddie was and still is quite the thrill to stare at – especially on an album sized cover. Let’s not forget the gatefold vinyl, when the album jacket opens up to reveal a panoramic view of Metal artwork and/or tons of photos of the respective band. Iron Maiden “Live After Death” is an amazingly great album for it’s music, yet the double vinyl album which opens as a gatefold is worth it’s weight in Metal gold!

It is too bad, quite sad really, that since the inception of the compact disc, the music industry does not put any little Metal goodies into the package anymore. Yes, I know, you can buy the deluxe editions of most releases today, they include usually a bonus dvd. Yet, you are paying for that extra dvd too. (Usually between 3 to 10 dollars more, depending on what retailer is selling it). What I would love to see, are tiny Metal tokens of gratitude, inserted into our beloved Metal CD’s for us Metal fan’s to cherish. How expensive can it really be for the wealthy music industry? How much of a nuisance could it cause for the music industry to throw a little Metal treat into the CD packaging? I am very tired of getting the cheap little piece of paper that advertises ring tones, t-shirts to buy and contests to enter on-line. (The chance of winning any contest from a CD purchase is the same as getting hit by a meteor from Outer Space).

Here are two recent Metal CD’s that I purchased in the last year, which contained a Metal goodie!! Now, are these little Metal treats still available in these CD’s if purchased today? I do not have that answer, all I know is I struck Metal gold and was/still am very happy about them. You see, it is the little things in life that makes this Metalhead happy.  Here are the two CD titles and what the goodies were:

1. DEF LEPPARD – “Songs From The Sparkle Lounge” – 4, that is correct, 4 guitar picks! Now that is what I call Metal brilliance! I give a very loud Metal bravo to Def Leppard and to the record label (Bludgeon Riffola Limited, The Island Def Jam Music Group). PLUS, each guitar pick has extremely cool Def Leppard album graphics – a “Pyromania”, “Hysteria”, “Yeah” and “Greatest Hits” guitar pick!!

2. OSAKA POPSTAR –  “Rock’Em O-SOCK’EM LIVE” – a funny, yet cool, “Garbage Pail Kids” trading card that is exclusive to only this OSAKA POPSTAR CD. This trading card has the CD cover graphics of “Rock’Em O-SOCK’EM LIVE”, produced by The Topps Company, Inc.

In closing, remember that the METAL FAMILY does have a very, very, long and expansive family tree. Case in point is my mentioning OSAKA POPSTAR above. Here is an abbreviated reason as to why the “LEGENDS OF PUNK”, OSAKA POPSTAR, are in the METAL family:

The Misfits, in my opinion, are heavy enough of a Punk Rock band to be enjoyed by any METAL fan. Jerry Only, the bass playing legend for The Misfits and Osaka Popstar, links right up to Glenn Danzig, who was the legendary lead singer for The Misfits, and Glenn Danzig is still going strong as a legendary METAL singer, songwriter, composer and artist. (Plus the late Cliff  Burton of METALLICA wore The Misfits t-shirts in tons of early to mid 1980’s photos). Pretty cool reasons for Osaka Popstar and The Misfits to be in the METAL family, yup.

So, to actually really close out this article, have fun searching for some teenie-tiny, cool METAL freebies (worth owning of course), in today’s CD marketplace. You just never know what you may come across. Good luck trying to find the old METAL vinyl of yesteryear too, who knows, the stuff is still out there, hopefully you find the vinyl that has the original posters, liner notes and “Love Gun” too!

HEAVY METAL & HARD ROCK RULES.

Posted in Death Metal, Extreme Metal, Heavy Metal, Metal, Thrash Metal with tags , on March 1, 2009 by Metal Odyssey

THIS IS A HEAVY METAL MUSIC BLOG!

8933265I revere Metal music, all genres of Metal music at that. I listen to: Power Metal, Death Metal, Thrash Metal, Old School Heavy Metal, Metal, Extreme Metal, Christian Metal, Hair Metal/Glam Metal, Black Metal, Metalcore and any other Metal genre that has not been mentioned in this statement. With that said, I do not buy into, or take part in any arguments of: Which Metal genre is better? Which Metal genre is cooler? My answer to these questions is short and simple: Who cares. I feel, that each Metal genre is unique, holds it’s own musical flavor and attitude, bestows it’s own Metal brilliance and sound.

I personally feel that the Metal Music world has enough people out there poking insults at it already, stereotyping Metal as violent, immature, and non-sensical. I call out for the Metal community and all Metal genres to unite as one incredibly strong, Metal family. Metal music currently is all over the top selling charts, all you need to do is look at the past year of 2008, DISTURBED, SLIPKNOT and METALLICA have made all of us Metalheads proud once again! That is just “3” Metal bands that lit up the top selling charts in 2008, I will mention many other fine Metal bands that broke into the mainstream during 2008 in future articles.

To sum up my initial introduction, I am stating that:

1. I think the world of Metal and all Metal genres, I feel Metal is the greatest – period.

2. I dream of the day, that all Metal genres unite, realize this is one incredible Metal family.

3. There are critics of Metal, always was, always will be. Ignore them, for they are the same people who followed the PMRC in the late 1980’s and believed Stryper was a band that played vulgar and obscene music.

4. In a Metal nutshell, I will endorse, praise, review and write about Metal Music here, while trying to enlighten and entertain readers with info of all things Metal.

5. I will not be writing about American Idol, nor will I write about The Partridge Family either. I think my point here was made rather well.

6. Metal music is here to stay, it is not going away anytime soon. Hopefully, Metal Odyssey will enrich the life of all Metalheads who visit, maybe recruit a few new Metal fans along the way.

7. I am also very much a fan of PUNK ROCK. I have always been intrigued by the similarities between the METAL and PUNK ROCK genres. The crossover between these two music heavy weights are founded, just look at the MISFITS  and  GLENN DANZIG! I always am eager to point out the factual events where PUNK ROCK meets METAL. I have to go now, I want/need to listen to some GAMMARAY.

Welcome to Metal Odyssey, it will be quite the Metal trip.
