Las Vegas-based Doom Metallers DEMON LUNG will venture west in the coming weeks to perform selections from their recently released full-length debut, The HundredthName. Joining the quintet on select dates will be friends Wounded Giant and Castle. Dates are set to begin June 29th in Salt Lake City and wrap with a hometown show on August 18th.
The Hundredth Name was released June 4th via Candlelight Records. Since its release, the The Hundredth Name has found a solid support network among media and college radio programmers nationwide, peaking on CMJ’s Loud Rock report at position 14 with Full Metal Jacket/DMX programming the album in its syndication networks plus specialty and college play from the likes of WAQX (Syracuse NY), WZGM (Asheville NC), WHMH (St. Cloud MN), WSOU (S. Orange NJ), WCSB (Cleveland OH), KFSR (Fresno CA), and WIXQ (Millersville PA), among many others.
Las Vegas Weekly says, “everything about DEMON LUNG’s debut screams epic.” Metal Review confirms, “vocalist Shanda Fredrick’s measured delivery is bleak and monotone… a grimly deliberate wail that works magic.” Pitchfork.com boasts, “Fredrick emerges like a high empress,“ while Vegas Seven adds, “literate and lacerating, the ‘LUNG breathes real fire.” The album was recently selected as “Album Of The Day” by Roadburn.com where they crowned DEMON LUNG “a band with promise.”
Formed in 2011, DEMON LUNG self-released their EP Pareidolia in early 2012. The band entered the studio to record The Hundredth Name with producer Billy Anderson (Neurosis, The Melvins, Sleep) in late December. The Hundredth Name was completed in early 2013 with final artwork provided by rising English illustrator Tom Gates (Vision of Disorder, Amorphis).

Check outProvidence LTDcables and pedals if you haven’t heard of them before. I’ve been using their cables for over 5 years and I can’t use other cables. I am honored to be on one of the posters they have!
UGLY KID JOE – A long time ago, I learned many valuable Metal lessons from a wise old Metal hermit; one who lived in the remote and heavily wooded expanse within the Northwest Hills of Litchfield County, Connecticut. This scholarly Metal hermit once told me: “Stone, grand Metal things happen to those who are patient.” Whoa. That Metal advice is so F’n true, especially when it comes to my waiting for this new (album) EP release, Stairway To Hell, from Ugly Kid Joe.
Back on September 22nd, 2009, I wrote (a rather cool and lengthy) post about my wanting Ugly Kid Joe to come back: (Where Have You Gone, UGLY KID JOE? Come Back!). Well, Ugly Kid Joe did just that with their (2012) Stairway To Hell EP and it’s been reissued this past April (UKJ Records) with 3 acoustic bonus tracks, an electronic press kit and the video for the whiz-bang song: I’m Alright. Ugly Kid Joe is certainly back on the live stage as well, with their first U.S. performance happening back on June 8th at the Badger Band Festival in Madison, Wisconsin; plus prominent Summer festival dates in Europe and an October/November 2013 tour of the UK and Europe with SKID ROW has been solidly confirmed!
This EP from California’s Ugly Kid Joe is a 100% solid reminder that they BELONG back ROCKIN’ with the best of ’em! My favorite songs on this grand EP are I’m Alright and Another Beer; both songs lyrically hitting home at my Metal soul! Devil’s Paradise, You Make Me Sick and No One Survives are hard, heavy, memorable and melodic as hell. Just tremendous songs all, courtesy of Ugly Kid Joe. You Make Me Sick and Love Ain’t True! revisit that Funk and Groove heaviness that Ugly Kid Joe have been so famously remembered for and it’s all a severely contagious listen for me.
The 3 acoustic songs are nothing short of fabulous and the cover of (the late/legendary) HarryChapin’s Cat’s in the Cradle is simply sensational. Ugly Kid Joe made this iconic #1 hit from Harry Chapin their own and I’m not screwing around by saying just that. WhitCrane sounds fantastic on vocals and the band kicks ass on every song. A perfect comeback EP from Ugly Kid Joe? Yes. There’s no doubt in my Metal mind that Ugly Kid Joe have re-entered the building and they’ve kicked my ass with their new songs. I deserved this Rockin’ ass whooping from Ugly Kid Joe, cause I freaking asked for it in the first place. Metal be thy name!

On August 6th, Shadow Kingdom Records will release the self-titled four-song EP from NWOBHM-inspired upstarts NIGHT DEMON.
This California trio, featuring members of THE FUCKING WRATH, first started making noise in 2011. It didn’t take long for the band to make a name for themselves with Trad-Metal maniacs from across the globe. In fact, shortly after establishing an online presence via Bandcamp, the organizers of Germany’s Keep It True Festival offered NIGHT DEMON a place on the fest’s 2014 line-up.
British metallic stylings reminiscent of Angel Witch, Raven and Iron Maiden are kicked into overdrive with an edgier and grittier dose of American Venom. Consider NIGHT DEMON mandatory listening for any NWOBHM fan. The Shadow Kingdom Records CD release is remastered from the digital version and offers an undeniably superior sound.
MAMMOTH SALMON – Sludge, Doom, & Keeping it Real. Those exact words are found on the about page of MAMMOTH SALMON’s Facebook. Metal truth be told, that sums up this 3 song Internet EP 2 from this Portland, Oregon Metal band quite adequately. There is an Internet EPreleased prior from these guys, back in December of 2012. I’ll blab about that one too in the near future; working my way backwards, I guess!
This Internet EP 2 has recently been released this past March and it’s HEAVY as freaking homemade molasses and an all-out riff fest. Raw and damn cool are these 3 songs I’ve listened to on this EP. MAMMOTH SALMON aren’t following the leader with their sound either. The Sludge and Doom that this Metal pack from the Great Northwest is tapping into has an electric vibe happening; that’s where the realcomes into play.
I just cannot control myself digging the way MAMMOTH SALMON have pieced these songs together, from a super thumping doom march to a crawling drone interval and back again; this band has caught my Metal attention. Paul Dudziak (vocals, guitar & bass) and MitchMeidinger on drums are the Dynamic Sludge Doom Duo that makes up MAMMOTH SALMON and it’s my Metal recommendation that you give them a listen.
I can honestly see MAMMOTH SALMON gaining some potent label attention (if the right person hears their Metal) in the near future, with such a strong mindset to keeping their songs both super heavy and fantastically interesting. Metal be thy name.

Black Death Metal Thrash demons ACHERON have completed the recording process for their upcoming Listenable Records release, Kult Des Hasses. The album is now set to enter the mixing and mastering phase.
ACHERON will be doing a mini-tour with INCANTATION in late July. The band has enlisted DISMEMBERMENT guitarist Jacob Shively to fill the slot of second guitarist. When asked if Shively would be their new permanent second guitarist, ACHERON founder Vincent Crowley stated:
“Jacob is a talented guitarist and fan of the band. His group DISMEMBERMENT opened for ACHERON a few times and I really liked them. That is why I asked him about filling in. But we are taking baby steps. We’ve learned from past experiences not to just hire someone right away. For now he is playing with us for all upcoming live shows. We’ll just have to see if it progresses into something more. But we are indeed open to the idea if the dedication and chemistry is there.”

Kyle Severn – drums
Art Taylor – Guitar

SIOUX – From the fine city of Portland, Oregon comes a really, really cool Metal/Heavy Rock band that recently caught my Metal attention and their named SIOUX. This Metal trio have just released their S/T EP on May 10th, 2013. I have become so impressed with this band’s sound and songs on this EP that I hereby make this Metal declaration:
SIOUX – S/T EP Is:
Stone’s METAL Pick Of The Day!
A (hopeful) majority of Sludge, Stoner, Doom and underground Metal fans will take an immediate liking to SIOUX and their muscular, badass heavy songs. There are 4 songs on their S/T EP and ALL 4 are legitimate listens that need to be heard and passed along throughout the Metal (world) community. Fans of Mastodon, WINO, Saint Vitus, Crowbar and Motörhead should all hear some influence within the song structures, vocals and musicianship of SIOUX.
Kirk Evans (vocals, guitar, bass) sounds like a giant atop the mountain peek, looking down upon his Metal followers who are chanting: SIOUX! SIOUX! SIOUX! In our grand Metal world there are those underground bands that turn up and kick your ass into Metal shape; SIOUX is one of those underground Metal bands. Get your ears into SIOUX and be glad you did; cause this band will serve you Metal right. Metal be thy name.

Fate is Your Muse is an introspective lyrical journey that careens from the metaphysical, to the absurd, to the pragmatic (and back again), all set to bone crushing heaviness wrapped in elaborate vocal melodies and elegant guitar phrases. Exploring topics such as reincarnation, the end of days, and the thin veil between reality and fantasy, the Indianapolis foursome create a rare musical experience; one that will have heavy rock fans returning for the primal emotional riffs, as well as the complex and heady lyrical content.
