Some Metal and Rock ‘N Roll Thoughts – Saturday, May 12th, 2012

Another week, another Metal dollar (or many Metal dollars) spent on paying bills and taxes. Expendable income is something I always try to handle with care. I like looking for deals when shopping for Metal. Finding a cool buy makes Stone a happy dude. The top photo of PANTERA 1990 – 2000 A Decade Of Domination proved to be my Metal surprise buy of the week.

I paid $5 (U.S. funds) for this PANTERA CD, at my local Super Walmart. A (10 song) greatest hits of PANTERA at 50 cents per song! Whoa. I already have these iconic PANTERA songs, still the “Only At Walmart” sticker on the wrapper made the completist collector side of me make the buy. Having this CD handy and at the ready has served me right.

Is it just me or does that Honda Odyssey commercial that plays The Hellion from the ultra-legendary Judas Priest rub you the wrong way? This commercial has been aired for over a year (it seems) and it takes the air out of a Metal classic, in my Metal opinion.

The Hellion is a psyche-you-out intro that leads into the (also) Metal classic: Electric Eye. Just the mass commercialization of The Hellion hasn’t sat right with me ever since I first saw this commercial. I guess it’s what you call: money talks.

Speaking of selling out… Aerosmith will be playing live, on the season finale of American Idol. This season finale will be aired on May 23rd, on the Fox network. Money and mammoth publicity reigns. I truly miss 70’s Aerosmith.

Scott Coverdale (Best Metal Buddy and Metal Odyssey correspondent) brought to my attention what the legendary Dee Snider is up to. You see, Scott and I both consider Dee Snider as a True American Metal Hero. Nothing shall ever change this mindset for us. With that said, I’m a bit bewildered as to Dee Snider’s current album project. Well… here is what Dee Snider is up to:

Dee Does Broadway. Metal be thy name. Metal be thy name… again. I’m thinking of that classic Cinderella song right about now. Which Cinderella song? Somebody Save Me.

Apocalyptic Love from SLASH – Featuring Myles Kennedy and The Conspirators will be released on May 22nd, 2012. I will buy this CD. Hopefully I can land it for around $10 at (you guessed it) Super Walmart. Best Buy will surely have it. Target won’t have it. No way. Hell, the Target near me hasn’t yet stocked the new Iron Maiden En Vivo! and that’s startling to say the least. This same Target location has made it a point to stock at least 250 copies of that new Nicki Minaj. Um, make that 500+ copies.

Yes, I did get off topic here. It happens. My closing thought on this new SLASH album is: excellent cover art! The cover art for Apocalyptic Love screams… ROCK ‘N ROLL! Then again, this is SLASH we’re talking about and I don’t think he’d have it any other way.

Those are my Metal and Rock ‘N Roll Thoughts for Saturday, May 12th, 2012. So let it be Metal written, so let it be Metal told. Metal be thy name.

It’s all part of the all-encompassing passion that is helping local bands get to the next level, the more I can do the happier I am. ABOUT VESPERIA: After several months of deep thinking and more than half a decade of live shows, line-up changes and the constant shake-ups in the music industry, the four musicians behind Bolero decided it was time for a big move – a change in name and mentality. Ladies, gentlemen and metal Vikings, we present to you, VESPERIA formerly known as Bolero.

Continuing to derive influences from thrash, black metal and traditional folk music, Vesperia are not leaving their epic orchestrations, throat-crushing speed nor ear-piercing guitar riffs behind, rather, they’re intensifying each element, adding more energy to their live shows just when fans thought they couldn’t get any more amped up and prepping to release their new demo as Vesperia, entitled ‘The Swordsman’.

Converting listeners and critics across the globe into believers and preachers of symphonic Celtic death metal since 2007, it’s clear VESPERIA has no plans of slowing down.

ROYAL THUNDER “CVI” – Unreal Is The Word And This Heavy Album MUST Be Heard!

Posted in classic rock, Hard Rock, Heavy Metal, heavy metal news, metal music, Music, rock music, rock music news, stoner metal with tags , , , , , , on May 10, 2012 by Metal Odyssey

ROYAL THUNDER – Ann Wilson of Heart. (the late) Janis Joplin. Melissa Etheridge. Bonnie Raitt. Joan Jett. Mlny Parsonz. These women of Rock all have one essential talent in common; they all sing from the heart and Rock ‘N Roll soul, while singing with believable passion. I also revere each of their voices too. Who is Mlny Parsonz your asking? Mlny is the vocalist and bassist for Royal Thunder. Mlny and Royal Thunder will be bigger than they probably ever fathomed… so they better get used to the accolades that will be coming their way.

I seriously believe a band like Royal Thunder only comes around every several years. Their debut full-length album, CVI, is easily one of the best albums I’ve listened to in years; crossing all Rock genres. Royal Thunder’s sound weaves Hard Rock, Metal, some psychedelia and meaty Stoner Metal with a thunderous vibe of Classic Rock. If there is that one can’t miss band you need to catch onto in 2012, it’s Royal Thunder; and that’s a sincere fact I am delivering to you.

Lyrically personal, emotional and dark, the songs on CVI are all equally sensational; while both the vocals of Mlny and the music are an astonishing match. If there is one legendary vocalist that Mlny is channeling in, that legend would be Janis Joplin. Regardless of comparisons, Mlny’s vocals are as refreshingly new like a long-awaited rain shower, during a late Summer’s drought.

_______________________________

The band plays their music with a driving passion as well, again, both vocals and music compliment each other on CVI and it’s a thrill a second to listen to. With a sonic retrospective flair being echoed throughout CVI, Royal Thunder still uncannily comes across as relevant with nary a remote hint of pretension. Even though Royal Thunder hasn’t invented the Rock ‘N Roll wheel, they didn’t try to reinvent it either on CVI; and that’s something many other up and coming bands should take note of.

Overall and (most importantly) consistently memorable throughout, CVI comes musically packaged as completeSleeping Witch and the opening track Parsonz Curse offer up substantial riffs and enough heavy texture to make any warm-blooded Metalhead jump for Metal joy. Even when Mlny and band tone things down during songs such as South Of Somewhere and Minus, they’re still heavy with the atmosphere of what’s to come next and what they’re all about.

I am very excited about Royal Thunder and their new album CVI; I imagine it obviously shows. What I’m also excited about is this band (albeit a conscientious maneuver or not) has connected the dots of Heavy Metal, Rock and Hard Rock’s past and written songs that bubbles over with admirably heavy substance in 2012. In a world of fake mainstream Rock and Pop crap that suffocates and kidnaps our youth and misinformed, real talent will always surface to the top and save us all, the crème de la crème which in this instance is… Royal Thunder.

ROYAL THUNDER:

Mlny Parsonz – bass & vocals

Josh Weaver – lead guitar

Lee Smith – drums

Josh Coleman – rhythm guitar

CVI release dates: May 22 (U.S.), May 28 (UK), June 1 (Ger/Benelux) and June 4 (World). CVI will be available on CD and 2xLP and of course digital, via Relapse Records.

MASTIC SCUM – Sign To Massacre Records

Posted in Death Metal, Extreme Metal, Heavy Metal, heavy metal news, metal music, Music, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , , , on May 7, 2012 by Metal Odyssey

We want to introduce you to our latest signing, MASTIC SCUM from Austria!

The four-piece was originally formed in 1992. A year later, the band released their first 12” EP “Ephemeral Cerebral Butchery”. Several demos, EPs and split CDs followed, leading to the release of their debut album “Zero” in the summer of 1999 through Noise Variations.

Within the following years, MASTIC SCUM released their albums “Scar” (Cudgel Agency, 2002), “Mind” (Cudgel Agency, 2005) and the latest album “Dust” (Twilight Rec., 2009), which was nominated for an Amadeus Austrian Music Award in 2010.

The band has already played a lot of club and festival shows in Europe, Asia and the US, joining Marduk and Vader at their “Funeral Nation Tour” through Europe in early 2010, for example!

There were a few line-up changes in the past years and when Alex joined vocalist Maggo, guitarist Harry and drummer Man in spring 2010 as bassist, MASTIC SCUM were stronger than ever!

Guitarist Harry about the signing:

“We are proud to announce that we signed a worldwide deal with one of our favorite labels. We know Massacre Records since quite a long time and are happy to be a part of it now!”

The band’s currently working on their fifth studio album, which is scheduled to be released in fall 2012!

PERPETUATE “Above And Beyond” – Debut Official Music Video; Stone’s Metal Pick Of The Day!

Posted in Heavy Metal, heavy metal news, metal music, Music, rock music, rock music news, symphonic metal with tags , , , , , on May 7, 2012 by Metal Odyssey

PERPETUATE – From Windsor, Ontario, Canada arrives the up and coming and talented Metal band Perpetuate. Their debut and self-titled CD is available now (see details below) and they are a band to keep a Metal eye on! With Symphonic and Classic Metal stylings, Perpetuate capitalizes on melodic sound with guitar parts that are standout. The vocals of Kim McInnis are emotion packed and heightens the total impact of their debut music video: Above And Beyond.

What I appreciate about Kim’s Soprano delivery, is she doesn’t attempt to sound pristine and keeps it real with her range. Kim is a delight to hear and watch, while Perpetuate plays their instruments with impressive clarity and aptitude. I hope you enjoy this debut from Perpetuate as much as I do; this is Stone’s Metal Pick Of The Day! Now, feel free to turn up the volume and let the Metal of Perpetuate amplify your mood for the better!

PERPETUATE:

Kim McInnis (vocals, keyboards)

Jamie Hush (guitars, vocals)

Chris Rafinski (guitars, vocals)

Michael Wiznuk (drums, vocals)

Calvin Love (bass, vocals)

_______________________________

Above And Beyond video and debut CD background info:

The video was directed by Spectre Sound owner and celebrated Metal producer Glenn Fricker. It features a bombastic light show from Marz Media and dizzying slow motion effects.

Fricker’s other video credits include “Primal Citizen” by Central Slang, “I Once Was” by Assassinate the Following and “Kill or Be Killed” by Aquila.

“Above and Beyond” is the fearless first track from Perpetuate’s self-titled debut CD. The mini-album is distributed by CDN Records and now available from Century Media Distro, iTunes, and other digital retailers everywhere.

Perpetuate is a five-piece Heavy Metal act featuring wild lead guitar and the soaring soprano vocals of keyboardist Kim McInnis.

Be sure to follow Perpetuate online at www.perpetuate.ca and facebook.com/perpetuate for upcoming show dates and other announcements.

CATTLE DECAPITATION – “Monolith Of Inhumanity” Streaming In Its Entirety At MetalSucks

Posted in Death Metal, Extreme Metal, Heavy Metal, heavy metal news, metal music, Music, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , , , on May 5, 2012 by Metal Odyssey

Band Added To Shockwave Festival Tour 2012 Lineup

MetalSucks will help you kick off your weekend in veggie-gorging Progressive Grind style with an exclusive stream of CATTLE DECAPITATION’s Monolith Of Inhumanity. Set for a North American release on Tuesday, May 8, 2012, the 11-track long player is an achievement that stands out as one of the most volatile, ambitious, and impossible-to-pigeonhole records of 2012.

Produced by Dave Otero of Denver’s Flatline Audio, Monolith Of Inhumanity sees the band investigating inventive new techniques in songwriting without abandoning their signature formula of confrontational audio wreckage. Conceptually, the record revolves around a potent distaste for contemporary civilization and the damage wrought in the name of progress.

In addition, Monolith Of Inhumanity features a host of guests including Mike Majewski of Devourment (guest vocals on “Projectile Ovulation”), Lenard Leal of Cephalic Carnage (backing vocals by on “A Living, Breathing Piece of Defecating Meat”), The Cephalic Carnage Community Men’s Choir, consisting of all current Cephalic members and alumni Jawsh Mullen and Zac Joe (gang choir vocals on “The Carbon Stampede”), and ambient and noise interludes by Los Angeles’ most extreme decimator of sound, John Wiese.

In related news, CATTLE DECAPITATION will crush souls on this Summer’s Shockwave Festival Tour 2012 announced earlier this week. The band will be joined by Fear Factory, Voivod, Misery Index, Revocation, Havok, Dirge Within, Last Chance To Reason, Vildhjarta, The Browning and Forged In Flame. Tickets are on sale TODAY at THIS LOCATION.

Comments vocalist Travis Ryan: “It’s been a great start of the year for us what with the new album already getting great reviews from fans and press and all, but we’re very excited for the announcement of this kick ass USA tour. It marks our return to Canadian soil after a three year absence and is looking to be an extremely heavy hitter. Very honored to be asked by the Shockwave Festival to be a part of it!”

Sear your eardrums HERE.

In the meantime, the band is currently bringing their audio pummel to the stage on the Occupation Domination 2012 Tour alongside Origin, Decrepit Birth, Aborted, Rings Of Saturn, Battlecross and more!

Some Metal and Rock ‘N Roll Thoughts – Saturday, May 5th, 2012

Posted in classic rock, Hard Rock, hard rock albums, Heavy Metal, heavy metal news, metal music, Music, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , , , on May 5, 2012 by Metal Odyssey

Back at the beginning of the year, I purchased Revelator; the debut from Tedeschi Trucks Band. This is a CD that I found myself plopping into the car’s player and letting the Rock ‘N Roll from this exquisite band soar. Derek Trucks is simply put, a wow guitarist. Susan Tedeschi is simply put, a wow vocalist.

Fabulous songs and so many tones and rhythms happening from a vast assembly of musicians; that it’s a whirlwind of musical bliss. Anyone unfamiliar with Susan Tedeschi should think: Sheryl Crow. Fans of so many Rock genres can get a kick out of what Derek Trucks and Susan Tedeschi have accomplished with their band here. Quality personified.

It was sad to hear that Adam Yauch passed away on Friday, May 4th. A founding member of the Beastie Boys is no longer around and he left way too young. Metal Odyssey expresses condolences to the family, bandmates, friends and fans of Adam Yauch.

An album I have caught onto this past week is: Michael Thompson Band – Future Past. This potent dose of AOR and Melodic Hard Rock was released back on February 24th of this year, via Frontiers Records. Michael Thompson is superb on guitar and keyboards. Michael Thompson has been a name in the world of Rock and Pop since the late 80’s, with a who’s who list of legendary celebrities he has played for; from Michael Jackson and Celine Dion to Vince Neil.

Vocalist Larry King (no, not the dude who retired from CNN) has an amazing voice. A trademark AOR/Melodic Rock voice. My ears surely dig how he sings these songs on Future Past. I’ve enjoyed listening to Future Past so much, I am hoping Michael Thompson will create more studio albums with Larry King. Good stuff. I also hope to write more about this album in the near future.

I don’t know about you, yet I am blown away by the album artwork of the new Municipal Waste album cover for The Fatal Feast. Justin Osbourn of Slasher Design created this fantastic cover. If Metal Odyssey adds a new award category of album artwork for the “Best Of” year-end lists; The Fatal Feast will be a muscular Metal contender! Add this one to my list of Metal albums I want to write more about… soon.

Municipal Waste – The Fatal Feast was released back on April 10th of this year, via Nuclear Blast America.

Okay. Those are my Metal and Rock ‘N Roll thoughts for Saturday, May 5th, 2012. Comment on them please! The Metal Odyssey boss said I need to draw more Metal commentary; otherwise I will be yelled at badly. Have a Rockin’ and cool Metal weekend. Also… If you still rent VHS tapes… “be kind and rewind.”

Rest In Peace, Adam Yauch. 1964 – 2012

KING GIANT “Dismal Hollow” – Stone’s Metal Pick Of The Day!

Posted in doom metal, Heavy Metal, heavy metal albums, heavy metal news, metal music, Music, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , , on May 3, 2012 by Metal Odyssey

KING GIANT – The thickly heavy, riff infested and insanely memorable Dismal Hollow, from Virginia’s King Giant, is my Metal Pick Of The Day. Released on January 31, 2012, Dismal Hollow is easily one of the must haves for any fan of blue-collar, Southern Metal. With legitimate comparisons to Corrosion Of Conformity, Clutch and Danzig; King Giant still resonates with originality and their Metal is a non-stop driving force! I feel Orange Goblin fans should get a Metal kick from King Giant’s Metal sound.

Honestly, the vocals of Dave Hammerly are eerily similar to that of Glenn Danzig. It all sounds grand to my ears and I get a Metal charge out of how contagious Dave’s vocals truly are. Strong and confident vocals from Dave makes this album of songs sound all the more muscular. Dismal Hollow never relents on its mission of Doom inspired thunder, coupled with more Metal grooves than you knew existed; the Metal psyche-out meter is smokin’ on all 8 songs here, my Metal brethren.

I can’t point out a favorite song that easily here, King Giant smacks it down so F’n thoroughly on Dismal Hollow. I have to say this album as a whole is my favorite; with the instrumental Road To Eleusis being damn near perfect. Something about this King Giant album has me reaching for my Sunrise On The Sufferbus CD from Masters Of Reality. Trust me, King Giant is heavier though.

If you are going Metal shopping today or this weekend, it is pertinent that you pick up Dismal Hollow. This is as imperative a Metal purchase as you’ll ever make in your entire Metal lovin’ life. Metal be thy name.

Dismal Hollow was released on King Giant’s own imprint label, Graveyard Hill Records; with a split release on The Path Less Traveled Records.

ABOUT: Spread The Metal Fest was inspired by STM Records owner Matt Day, whom previously worked for HSF as a volunteer and decided it was time to give back to the community and help an organization and cause that promotes awareness of heart disease along with financial support.

ABOUT: Spread the Metal Records is an artist-oriented label. They recognize the commitment of all those who have signed with them and those who continue to support them in other ways. A label is only as strong as its artists, and indeed the job of the record label is to create an environment where they can pursue their artistic vision. That means giving straight answers, holding themselves accountable, taking responsibility for their mistakes, and recognizing their own limitations. STM believes in every release that they put out and they have more respect for the fans than to expose them to a sub-par album. STM demands the best from themselves, and so they can’t accept any less from the bands that they represent.

Stone Says: I’ve stated once before, the sincere admiration I have for Matt Day’s charitable kindness through his Spread The Metal Festival and Spread The Metal Records. I also admire each and every band that are giving their time to perform at this fabulous festival; along with the sponsors and anyone else that is involved in making this event happen. This Spread The Metal Fest proves that Metal can make a difference in people’s lives.

Candlelight Records Sampler Available For FREE Via Amazon Starting Today

Posted in Extreme Metal, Heavy Metal, heavy metal news, metal music, Music, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , , , on May 2, 2012 by Metal Odyssey

Candlelight Records today launches a free label sampler available exclusively from Amazon.com. The 8-song sampler includes previously unreleased material from FALLOCH, THE ROTTED, WODENSTHRONE, SEAR BLISS, WOE, WINTERFYLLETH, RUMPELSTILTSKIN GRINDER and includes the first single from IHSAHN’s new album Eremita.

“The Paranoid” is taken from IHSAHN’s anticipated fourth solo album. Set for release June 19, Eremita was mixed by Jens Bogren (Opeth) and features performances from drummer Tobias Ornes Andersen (Leprous), saxophonist Jorgen Munkeby (Shining-Norway), guitarist Jeff Loomis (ex-Nevermore), and vocalists Devin Townsend, Einar Solberg (Leprous), and Heidi S. Tveitan (StarofAsh). MetalSucks editor Vince Neilstein says, “The Paranoid” is a perfect introduction to Eremita. It’s heavy, expansive, and it’s complex without being an asshole about it. Not that any of this should be surprising; IHSAHN’s been developing his own singularly definable sound for three albums now, so fans should know what to expect.”

The inclusion of an early production mix of RUMPELSTILTSKIN GRINDER’s “Fucking Wild” follows the recent announcement of the band’s forthcoming new album, Ghostmaker. The Philadelphia-based quartet recently completed a string of regional performances and are now gearing up for dates to support the new album once it hits stores nationwide on June 19. Guitarist Ryan Moll says, “the title of this track says it all. It’s a rather suiting description of its relentlessness. The lyrics were written by Shawn (Riley) and the title was inspired by some old live Venom recordings.”

FALLOCH’s “The Ghosts That Haunts This Path” is a new song for American audiences. Previously available as a b-side to a European-only single, the song showcases the impressive stylings of the Scottish post-black metal duo. MSN Metal called the band’s debut Where Distant Spirits Remain, “a drop-dead gorgeous, haunting piece of work.” Kerrang called it, “intoxicating, haunting, beautiful.” Brooklyn Vegan adds, “it’s clear that FALLOCH aims to walk along the righteous path of adventurous black metal bands like Alcest. Where Distant Spirits Remain is a great first step in that direction.”

Planning to hit the studio in early June to lay down tracks for their third album, WOE’s reworked “Quietly, Undramatically” opens a new door on the title track from the band’s popular 2010 release of the same name. Vocalist/guitarist Chris Grigg notes, “the remixed version of ‘Quietly, Undramatically’ is a more accurate representation of what was hoped to achieve with the material and offers a different perspective into the album.” Decibel Magazine said, “Woe strive for sophistication without falling into the usual pitfalls of pretentiousness, cartoonish-ness or undue gloss. Essential aggression is maintained, while the atmospheric and emotional depth envelopes are pushed with a bold fearlessness.”

Mayhem Festival Cruise – December 7th – 10th, 2012; Band Lineup, Info & Some Metal Thoughts…

Posted in Heavy Metal, heavy metal festivals, heavy metal news, metal music, Music, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , , on May 1, 2012 by Metal Odyssey

MAYHEM FESTIVAL CRUISE –  I couldn’t think of a better way to spend 4 days of early Winter! Whoa. This Mayhem Festival Cruise sails to the Bahamas and back to Miami, while pretty much guaranteeing no snow, sleet or freezing rain in the forecast! If I had the expendable loot and time to just “pack up and go” I’d be all over this cruise… or any of the cruises that boast festivals lately.

Just take a glance at the poster above! Anthrax, Lamb Of God, Machine Head, Hatebreed, Kingdom Of Sorrow, Gojira, Battlecross and Suicide Silence. Whoa. Whoa again. Lot’s of heavy-duty bands assembling on this cruise! Plus, the legendary Jamey Jasta will be on double-duty with Hatebreed and Kingdom Of Sorrow. Excellent.

Since I’m not going, I felt it was my Metal duty, to inform my Metal brethren, who just might be able to jump on board this Mayhem Festival Cruise. I’m sure I will be ushering in Winter and its dreary weather with open arms, while this Mayhem Festival Cruise sets sail. (!) It’s all good though. I’m just glad these bands exist and METAL RULES BY LAND… AND SEA! Metal be thy name.
